800,000 Shoeboxes for Children in Need of Christmas Love We helped promote a story back in November and December 2016 for Operation Christmas Child, which last winter collected over 880,000 shoeboxes to send to children in need around the world, thanks to the support of individuals, organisations and churches across the UK.

Some weeks ago Ella Duffy aged 6, together with her Mummy, spent some time clearing up the litter which was strewn all over the MUGA area at Ferndale Park, Ratby. There was broken glass, the usual sweet wrappers, cans etc., and also a broken crash helmet! The only problem was that the nearest litter bin was not close to this area. Ella made a poster asking people not to drop litter in the park and took pictures of the rubbish left. She also wrote a letter to the Council asking if another litter bin could be put nearer the MUGA area.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main Street, Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. They are normally on either a Thursday or Tuesday.

Joseph also farmed three fields at the back of Ivy Cottage in which he kept cows. Sarah would make butter in the larder which was situated in an outbuilding at the back of the cottage, and sell dairy products to the villagers.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 18th May. There will be a talk entitled “Made in Leicester”- companies that started in Leicester and became National and International.

Over the years, three of Joseph’s sons worked for him. Harry, aged 14, was employed as a farmers’ boy but by 1911 the census shows he is age 32 and a wheelwright. He did not stay in the business, but moved to Thorneyfields Farm and became a farmer.

Joseph Moore -Wheelwright Joseph was born in 1851, at Walton-byKimcote, one of eight children born to Charles and Elizabeth (nee Fitzhugh). He was apprenticed to wheelwright Samuel Issit Harrison of Forest Edge, Leicester Forest in 1866, and completed his apprenticeship at the age of 21 in 1872. The following year, he married Sarah Jane Bradbury of Kirby Muxloe, at St Bartholomew’s Church, and moved into a cottage on Main Street, next to what is now One Stop. By 1881 Joseph had an established business and workshop and land on Main Street, which stretched from the Old White House to the shop now occupied by A.A. Moore. By 1886, Joe and Sarah had six children, and they moved into a larger house -Ivy Cottage-nearly opposite the workshop.

Charlie worked in the business for several years, but in 1901 he joined the navy and completed 6 years’ service. On leaving the navy he worked as a foreman and winder at Desford Colliery. He moved into Ivy Cottage with his family after the death of Joseph and Sarah in 1929.

Apart from war service, youngest son Tom always worked for his father, and took over the business in the early 1920’s. He not only made coffins, but also seemed to become the village undertaker working closely with Ginns and Gutteridge the funeral directors of Leicester. He was a good carpenter and

seemed to turn his hand to anything, making all sorts, including carts, sash-cord windows, milking stools and dolly pegs. He was also known for his sign writing skills. He served in the Royal Engineers during WW1 and was injured in the shoulder and leg at Arras in 1917. He was in hospital in Sheffield, for some time, but returned to the business until his retirement in 1952. The premises were then extended and his work tools were buried beneath the concrete floor.

George Moore, youngest brother of Joseph also came with his family to Kirby Muxloe in 1888/89. He was a carpenter and joiner, and is known to have worked on the building of the Free Church on the corner of Church Road and Main Street which was completed in 1897. He was probably employed by the builder G.F. Mason, but by 1901 he was an employer working from his home in Castle road. Although some of his children stayed in the village, George, his wife Kate, and the youngest children moved to Bardon, where he was employed as a “foreman of artificial stone” at the concrete works.

Joseph worked very closely with John “Jack” Chesterton the village blacksmith, as all the wheels needed a steel rim to make them stronger. Jack, who lived at the Old Forge further along Main Street, would measure the wheel and make the rim in his workshop, returning with it to Joe for fitting. They would build a fire and heat up the rim, and then place it around the wooden wheel, cooling it quickly with buckets of cold water to ensure a tight fit. Apart from wheels, Joseph also made coffins for the local community, implements

TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER:- BRADGATE HILL AND MARKFIELD ROAD, GROBY. Leicestershire County Council Highways are carrying out works at the above location which includes closing off nine gaps in the central reservation and reducing the speed restriction to 40mph.

The works will be carried out under a 24hr offside inbound and outbound lane closure from 7.30am on Saturday 8th April until 5.30pm on Sunday 9th April. Off-peak offside inbound and outbound lane closures, 9.30am to 3.30pm, will then be in operation from Monday 10th April until Thursday 13th April. The lane closures will be in operation on the section of the A50 between the Field Head and the A46.

A 40mph speed restriction will be introduced for safety.

Access will not be possible during the works through any of the gaps.

Leicestershire County Council will endeavour to keep inconvenience to a minimum and maintain access to properties at all times.

Groby Pool On Going ASB Issues Residents will be aware that I have taken this issue up on behalf of residents. I arranged a site visit a couple of weeks ago with council officers and a member of the CIC which owns the Meadow that adjoins Groby Pool.

The Council has agreed to remove a lot of the undergrowth and brambles to leave the area clear and more open between the trees in order to prevent the ongoing issues. Various other options are also being considered. We want to maintain this area as a family area for visitors and dog walkers.

The Police and Council officers, want to reduce the ongoing inappropriate behaviour at Groby Pool, and reaffirmed the following joint statement.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council and Leicestershire Police have been actively working in partnership to respond to an increase in reports of anti-social behaviour at Groby Pool over the spring and summer months. Over the last few months there has been an increase in patrols by the local neighbourhood officers, while staff from the local council’s street scene team regularly attend to clear litter.

We would encourage anyone who witnesses �any anti-social behaviour, including antisocial driving, littering and sexualised behaviour, to report it to Leicestershire Police on 101 or by contacting the council’s Endeavour Team on 01455 238141.

Email Fraud Please Be Aware Fraudsters are sending out a high volume of phishing emails to personal and business email addresses, pretending to come from various email addresses, which have been compromised.

The subject line contains the recipient’s name, and the main body of text is as below: “Hi, [name]!

I am disturbing you for a very serious reason.

Although we are not familiar, but I have significant amount of individual info concerning you. The thing is that, most likely mistakenly, the data of your account has been emailed to me.

For instance, your address is: [real home address] I am a law-abiding citizen, so I decided to personal data may have been hacked. I attached the file – [surname].dot that I received, that you could explore what info has become obtainable for scammers. File password is – 2811 Best Wishes,” The emails include an attachment – a ‘.dot’ file usually titled with the recipient’s name.

This attachment is thought to contain the Banking Trojan Ursniff/Gozi, hidden within an image in the document. The Ursniff Banking Trojan attempts to obtain sensitive data from victims, such as banking credentials and passwords. The data is subsequently used by criminals for monetary gain.

Protect Yourself: Having up-to-date virus protection is essential; however it will not always prevent your device(s) from becoming infected.

Please consider the following actions: • Don’t click on links or open any attachments you receive in unsolicited emails or SMS messages: Remember that fraudsters can ‘spoof’ an email address to make it look like one used by someone you trust. If you are unsure, check the email header to identify the true source of

communication (you can find out how by searching the internet for relevant advice for your email provider).

• Do not enable macros in downloads; enabling macros will allow Trojan/malware to be installed onto your device.

• Always install software updates as soon as they become available. Whether you are updating the operating system or an application, the update will often include fixes for critical security vulnerabilities.

• Create regular backups of your important files to an external hard drive, memory stick or online storage provider. It is important that the device you back up to is not connected to your computer as any mal ware infection could spread to that as well.

• If you think your bank details have been compromised, you should contact your bank immediately.

Women's World Day of Prayer - Friday 3rd March 2017 We had a lovely afternoon at Kirby Muxloe Free Church, starting with soup and a roll before the service and finishing with tea and cakes after.

Two fined for failure to update microchip details Two dog owners have been prosecuted for failing to ensure their dogs microchip details were up to date. Under The Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations 2015, dog owners must have their pet microchipped, and for all details to have the most recent information with contact details for a dog’s keeper.

Both were prosecuted after being served notice for failure to update their dog’s chip, despite the 21 day period of notice and seven additional days to prove the required action had been taken.

Updating a dog’s microchip details can be easily done over the phone or online and can cost as little as £4.95 depending on the database.

Jon Wells, Group Manager for Regulatory and Leisure Services, said: “We’re disappointed that we have had to take this action against individuals in the district. Our Environmental Services team are happy to help anyone struggling with the process to ensure their dog can be identified.

About 40 people attended the service, and everyone seemed to appreciate the work that the women of the Philippines had put into producing the service, helping us to understand more about the issues women face in the Philippines today.

“This law has now been in place for nearly a year and it’s very important that people make sure there are complying with the law. We will continue to take this course of action when necessary.”

Village Writers The Village Writers regularly meet 7.30 – 9.30pm: 1st & 3rd Weds. of the month: Kirby Muxloe Free Church, in the rooms located on Church Road.

We all share a common interest in writing, whether it be recording memoirs, creating poetic verse, inventing short stories or writing articles covering any subject.

£252 was donated to the WWDP from the offering on the day and the proceeds of the tea afternoon which had been held the week before.

Our aim is support and encourage members and the evening is always filled with lively discussion and interesting feedback. Each meeting we offer a themed subject to work on but this is entirely optional. During the meeting on the third Wednesday of February we discussed contributions brought to the table on the theme of ‘a school trip’.

More than £1,000 stolen as sixth LOROS Shop this year targeted by thieves Another LOROS Hospice has been targeted by thieves, making this the sixth incident of its kind in just two months.

The charity’s Furniture Shop, in Uppingham Road, Leicester, was broken into last night, with thieves ransacking the entire place before taking a safe containing £1,000 and causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

The incident comes just weeks after five of the Hospice’s other shops were targeted in just a matter of days.

LOROS Trading Manager, Jonathan Capewell said: “It’s absolutely devastating, especially for the volunteers who discovered the mess when they arrived for work this morning.

“The whole place was ransacked; the back-office computer had even been thrown across the room.

“Not only did they take the safe, they took all of the LOROS scratch cards that were in the shop too.”

Jonathan said that the thieves had left one of their drills they used to remove the safe still plugged in to the shop’s mains. “The thing is, this particular shop has metal shutters covering every window when it’s closed but still, those responsible, managed to climb onto the roof and get into the first floor by smashing their way through the fire escape door,” he added.

Police came out immediately this morning and the shop was eventually able to open again, once the mess had been cleared up.

Meanwhile, the front window of the LOROS Shop, in Biggin Street, Loughborough, was also smashed last night, which will cost the Hospice around £3,000 to repair.

“We’re not sure whether the Biggin Street shop was an attempted break-in, or was the result of people having a bit too much to drink; what we do know is, all of this is going to cost LOROS thousands of pounds which could have been spent caring for terminally ill people,” said Jonathan.

Ratby Primary School

Science Brookvale

The Club Some of the children who attend Ratby Pre School, and will be starting Ratby Primary School in September, joined us for a KitKat and a play this month.

They were able to experience the school environment, meet the teachers, and have some fun playing with their friends and family. It was wonderful that so many children and their parents were able to come. We hope that you had a fun time and that you will be back to see us soon!

We very much look forward to meeting more children in the Summer Term.

On Tuesday 14th March, we were proud to be selected to represent our school at Brookvale High School. Throughout the exciting morning, we did two different science experiments (which were really intriguing!) These experiments included using: a bunsen burner; pulse rate monitor; boiling tube; thermometer and tongs.

During the first science experiment, we were seeing which food   would give the most energy out of a piece of pasta, one biscuit and shreddies. To do this, we put 10ml of water into the boiling tube; then we burnt the food on the bunsen burner and held it carefully  underneath the boiling tube. After that, we placed the thermometer into the boiling tube to test how much energy each food released.  In the end, we found out the food that contained the most energy was the biscuit! 

For the second experiment, we tested how quickly our heart rate  would change from doing different types of activities for one minute.  The results were surprising, as everybody had different heart rates for each one - there was a huge difference between everyone. We figured out that the people who did more exercising in general had a more consistent heart rate.

Our favourite experiment was finding which food had the most  energy. We are thankful for the teachers who chose us for this event with other Year 6 children from different schools. The children from  Foundation Stage Performance of Chicken Licken Brookvale who helped us with our tasks were very cheerful and It was great fun and we would love to go and try this again We are hugely proud of all of the children who helpful. have worked tremendously hard to practice and perform this we cant wait to go to Brookvale! show to their families and friends. Performance Poetry This half term was the Spring Poetry Competition. Everyone had spent lots of time preparing their poem and the children were very excited to perform to the rest of the Key Stage and more importantly, the judges. There was a nervous atmosphere in the air as the children took to the stage. This time, Year 1 and Year 2 tried to win more points by linking their poem to their topics.

Bikeability

Over the past few weeks, some of Year Five have been taking part in a Bikeability course. We began with Level 1, which took part on the playground, where we practised hand signals and took part in a slow race. Also on Level one, we practised riding together in a line and what it would be like on a junction.

Level 2, well it was fun being on the road for the first time but sometimes we had to get off our bikes and listen to the instructor. We have learnt to do a stop u turn and a rolling u turn. We also learnt how to park our bikes safely on the kerb, while we were doing that we had to stop and wait for cars to go by, so it was a perfect example. We have been having a great time, learning to ride safely.

The Year 1 poems were all about space and the Year 2 poems were all about bouncy balls. After all the excitement there could only be one winner for Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and another from Foundation. The Stars class took the trophy for Key Stage 1, Sunshines class took the award for Foundation and Comets class won the trophy in Key Stage 2.

All the classes performed amazingly and we're all really excited for the next competition in the Summer term.

This pitted them against all the other regional winners from across Leicestershire. Brookvale were drawn in  Group A, winning all their matches and conceding only one goal.



   On Wednesday 22nd February, Year 2 visited the historic Rockingham castle to launch their new  topic ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’. The children  were treated to a full guided tour of the castle and its grounds.

The Ratby Library Quiz Night As part of their tour, the children explored the castles dungeon, kitchen, servant quarters, library and great hall. Each of the tour guides was very informative and the children learnt a lot about the castle’s history and defences. The castle itself was built on a hill and has a Motte and Bailey design, which the children took great joy in identifying.

They all enjoyed spotting the castle’s towers and turrets as well as the battlements and portcullis.

The circular route starts and finishes in Rothley village and has been carefully chosen to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment. It is fairly challenging in parts and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. There are plenty of marshals along the way to give you lots of moral support and encouragement.

Car park Litter Our recent concern regarding litter in the car park and through the Libraries letter box has received most appreciated help from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council. One of our Borough Councillors, Chris Boothby, took up the matter on the libraries behalf which has been most helpful in the provision of a Litter Bin. The picture shows the bin, empty now for the third time since it was erected. Thanks to everybody for using it so well and of course the Library volunteers for emptying it.

The Ratby Library and community group is registered as a charity, number 1164252 and as a Ltd Company. Policy documents are available for viewing on the web site. As is generally known the library is moving towards self financing. HEALTHMATTERS Salt – The Forgotten Killer Many people now know that eating too much salt is bad for their health and are looking to cut down.

However, whilst you can take control of your salt intake when preparing food at home by reading the labels and not adding salt, when eating out of the home it can be difficult to know where to start.

There is strong evidence that links high salt intake to high blood pressure. High blood pressure is one of the main causes of strokes and a major cause of heart attacks and heart failures. There is now some evidence that shows that a high salt intake in children also influences blood pressure and may predispose the child to the development of a number of diseases. So managing yours and your children’s salt intake is vital in order to remain healthy.

Almost everyone in the UK eats too much salt. The daily recommended amount in the UK is no more than 6 grams a day; the current average salt intake is 8.6g salt a day although many people are eating more than this. People with or considered at risk of high blood pressure should take extra care to ensure that they keep their salt intake below the

The Ratby Open Mic Night takes place on the second Monday of the month, so the next will be Monday 10th April 2017, 8.30pm onwards. If you fancy coming along to perform in front of the supportive crowd or just listening, you’d be very welcome. We particularly want to encourage female performers to attend.

It’s a great session for those who want to gain experience of performing. It’s also great if you want try out new songs or formats in front of an audience. We provide a p.a. with a couple of mikes so you can plug in or play acoustically. Every evening is different, it’s really not to be missed.

Talk by Liz Robson of Kingfisher’s Pool Vineyard, Rothley There was an audience of over 70 members and guests to attend our 36th Annual General Meeting on Monday March 20 and to hear a fascinating talk.

We were delighted to have Liz Robson to talk to us about English wine and the Rothley vineyard. Liz Robson explained how she first became interested in viniculture and having taken over a 5 acre property in Rothley, she planted the first 6 rows of vines in 2008. She told us of the development of English wines; over 4000 vineyards!

Most popular were the samples of her wines; King Richard, King Henry, Battle Royal and Fearless. She also gave us a “sparkler” Spirit of Freedom. Members and visitors were able to taste a selection of the excellent sparkling wine and their best-selling white wine, King Richard.

Liz welcomes visitors, by arrangement, and her wines are readily available at David North.

Final reminder to renew garden waste collection service Almost a year after the introduction of a payment-based garden waste collection service in Hinckley & Bosworth, the Borough Council is reminding residents that any bins not displaying a 2017/18 payment sticker will not be emptied from next Monday 3 April.

Residents who do wish to continue to receive the service and have not yet renewed are advised to make payment as soon as possible and allow 10 working days for the sticker to be delivered before presenting their garden waste bin for collection.

Residents who have already renewed are asked to make sure the new 2017/18 sticker is fixed to their garden waste bin as the bin will not be emptied without it.

Renewals can be made online at www. hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk/gardenwaste, where the council has made significant improvements to the system that was used 12 months ago. Alternatively, call the council on 01455 238141.

Payments can be made by either credit or debit card, but residents should be aware that a small surcharge is made for credit card payments. The price has been frozen and remains at £24 for 2017/18.

Garden waste is still collected on a fortnightly basis, closing only for two weeks over Christmas and New Year. This means that each collection costs just 96 pence.

Payment for the service can be made at any time throughout the year.

Hinckley town centre will be filled with the sound of music this summer when the Music in the Mead series of free concerts returns The concerts, which will take place in Argents Mead bandstand, will see the return of some old favourites such as Little Boy Blue and the award-winning acapella choir Tuxedo Junction, as well as a few new performers this year.

And thanks to the opening of the new leisure centre and the castle-themed children’s play area, Argents Mead is looking better than ever. So people are being encouraged to take along a picnic and enjoy an afternoon of free entertainment.

Saturday performances take place from 1pm to 3pm while Sunday and Bank Holiday performances are from 2pm to 4pm. All will have a short interval in the middle. There will be a performance on all three days of the Feast Hinckley Food Festival on 27 - 29 May.
