READ ALL ABOUT IT!

As mentioned in the previous editions of ‘Your Local’ magazine, Ratby Primary School have been reading for their school. Through ‘Read for My School 2014’, over 850,000 books were read by over 200,000 pupils in primary and secondary schools up and down the country. We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded 100 Literacy books for reading an impressive 643 books in total!

Throughout the competition we were also given the opportunity to write a short letter to the children in Tanzania who will subsequently receive thousands of books from Pearson Education. Children were then selected and judged by a panel. The most powerful letters were awarded regional and national prizes for their age range. The letters that the children wrote were extremely impressive and it was brilliant to read how much the children value books. We knew the competition would be tough and we were over the moon to find that one of our pupils had won!

Emily’s letter was selected as 1st Prize regionally for her year group. Emily and her friends and family were invited to attend the East Midlands Regional Award Ceremony on Thursday 15th May. The children had an enjoyable afternoon meeting the award-winning author Guy Bass famous for his ‘Stitch Head’ books.

Emily was awarded a gift voucher for Waterstones and a selection of books. The children had a brilliant afternoon and the excitement has definitely helped to raise the reading profile throughout the school.

A big thank you to all of the children for taking part and hopefully the children’s enthusiasm will continue over the Summer as we begin the Library Reading Challenge.

On Saturday 19th July, a visit by coach from Kirby Muxloe to Bede House in Lyddington has been organised by the group, with lunch locally and a break in Oakham on the return journey. The Kirby Players Celebrate Their 70th Anniversary

Ratby Village Society

The Kirby Players are celebrating their 70th Anniversary this year and we are hosting a number of events for members, friends and their families.

We are proud to have a thriving junior section in our drama Society.

Ages range from 6 to 16. We have provided a lot of resources to encourage the theatre related development of the children of the local community and importantly, to safe guard their wellbeing.

One of the facilities our vintage theatre now lacks is suitable, dedicated dressing rooms for our young members and in partnership with the Village Hall Committee; our Society is tasked with raising £10,000 as our contribution towards this major project. We therefore need your help to achieve this target. Please support us if you can. We would be delighted to welcome you to any of our fund raising events.

A Summer Dance is planned on 28th June with the fabulous ‘Stone Ravens’ band. A local band, the Stone Ravens play many private functions. Their repertoire spans pop music from the late 50s to the present day. Something for everyone to enjoy and dance the night away.

There are only 100 tickets now available at just £6 each. Free parking, subsidised bar prices and a free hotdog served during the evening.

Not only are we fund raising, we are of course, busily rehearsing for our next production. ‘Teenage in Love’ will be performed from Tuesday July 30th to Saturday August 2nd.

Ratby Village Society in association with Ratby Sports Club, welcomes you to join them in the Sports Club room, Desford Lane, Ratby on Thursday 19th June starting at 7.30pm for Gill Smart's talk on the work of the 'Heart Link' charity, based at Glenfield General Hospital.

Monies collected by YOU throughout the year will be presented on the night.

Admission £1.60 members and £2.50 visitors/ casual guests. Non-members are very welcome to attend.

Ratby's 4th Annual Show takes place on Saturday 9th August in the freshly decorated surroundings of Ratby Sports Club room, Desford Lane, Ratby. Bring your entries on Friday 8th August from 7pm to 8.30pm and/or Saturday 9th from 8.30am to 10.30am.

Everyone very welcome. The show is open to the public from 2pm on Saturday, and presentation of trophies takes place at 4pm.

A cricket match is being played during Saturday afternoon and you are welcome to relax and enjoy the game, perhaps accompanied by something cool from the bar (open at 2pm), or with a refreshing cup of tea or coffee.

Best friends at school, we follow our 4 couples from their final ‘End of Year Disco’, through the next 10 years of University, work and then to their 10 year reunion. Told mainly through Rock’n Roll songs from the 50’s and 60’s, we see if their friendships survive and how they mature or otherwise. A live band will generate the atmosphere of the Dance Hall.

May Cancer Research Fundraiser Our Spring Fayre took place on the 16th May. A busy time for all the helpers (thank you). The plants were very popular, the delicious looking cakes sold out fast. Both card stalls were very busy and the ‘bric a brac’ stall had may treasure seekers looking for a bargain. The raffle had lots of really good prizes. Debbie’s clothes and Samantha Hill’s crafts attracted many customers.

The Fayre raised over £700. Last year your local support group raised over £4,000 to help this valuable cause.

New chairman chosen for council Councillor David Clements was sworn in as chairman of Blaby District Council at the annual meeting on May 27. The new chair is taking over from Councillor Alan Tanner and has chosen to support LOROS and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance during his term in office.

Councillor Clements has represented Forest Ward (Leicester Forest East) on Blaby District Council for the last 14 years and over the last 8 years has been a member of the ruling Cabinet Executive with portfolio responsibilities for performance and leisure.

This will be the Councillor’s first term as chairman at the Council, he said: “I am proud and honoured to be made Chairman and will continue to do my best to represent the Council and its residents during my year in office.”

Councillor Clements is a resident of Kirby Muxloe where he lives with his wife Joan, and though not a native of Leicestershire, spent many years of his working life in the construction materials industry closely associated with the Leicestershire quarries.

The new Chairman will be pleased to attend any events that organisations may be planning over the coming year.

The application was to extend the opening hours to 17:00 hrs - 22:30 hrs Monday to Thursday, 17:30 - 23:00 Friday to Saturday and 17:00 - 21:30 on Sunday. We are getting a lot of calls from residents angry at the amount speeding cars tearing through the village and along Markfield Rd. Working with the local Police beat team, we have identified several vehicles and these are being watched. Recently, a camera team was deployed on Markfield Rd and as a result, over 30 drivers can expect a court summons. Ratby is a small peaceful village so let us all work together to keep it that way.

Special deal on dog micro-chipping This summer as part of a campaign by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council to encourage more dog owners to have their pets micro-chipped.

For a cost of just £10, the Dog Warden will microchip any dogs that are taken along to Markfield Community Centre, Mayflower Close, Markfield on Tuesday 29 July between 1pm and 3pm. Microchipping is now the quickest and easiest way for a lost pet to be identified by the Dog Warden, or by a vet, and returned to its rightful owner. Without micro-chipping, it is estimated that less than half of the animals that go missing each year are reunited with their owners.

From 2016 it will be a legal requirement for all dogs to be micro-chipped. A micro-chip is a small electronic device, which is the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the skin using a special implant gun. No anaesthetic is required and the procedure should cause no more discomfort than a standard vaccination.

Each micro-chip has a unique identification number, which is registered to the animal and the owner's details are placed on a national database. This number can then be read when a scanner is passed over the chip, enabling the Dog Warden to search the national database to find the owner's details.

The owner can then be contacted and reunited with their dog. However, it is important that owners update their dog's registered details if they change, such as moving house.

“We are delighted that the judge Mr Justice Foskett made a very clear decision when he found in favour of Blaby District Council after hearing the Judicial Review submitted by the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Leicestershire seeking to quash the planning permission for the new community of Lubbesthorpe.

“Lubbesthorpe will deliver over £159m of much needed infrastructure including 4,250 new homes of which at least 25% will be affordable homes, 1,530 new jobs, extensive (205 hectares) public open space, three new schools, transport infrastructure and improvements, community facilities and over £1.6m to Leicestershire Police to pay for vehicles, communication equipment and premises.

“Blaby District Council is saddened that the PCC chose to take this action. It has cost the local taxpayer a lot of money, delayed the delivery of much needed homes and jobs and wasted everyone's time and energy.

“Despite the recent legal action taken by the PCC the Council has continued to enjoy excellent working arrangements with the operational teams at Leicestershire Police.

“We now look forward to seeing things start moving as Lubbesthorpe delivers the jobs, homes and opportunities that local people need.”

If you happen to be in the LFE library on Thursday morning you may hear a chorus of ‘Wind the Bobbin up’ drifting through the air, followed by ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ capped off with a chapter and verse of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. This friendly group named ‘Sing-a-Song-a-Story’ is headed up by Freya Luker, Community Outreach worker and her outreach assistant Amy Gilbert. As a team they work together in partnership with Leicestershire Libraries and Sure Start children’s Centres. Their aim is to work with families with children under 5 in the community to encourage parents and carers to sing and read more with their children in order to improve, speech, language, communication and literacy.

Speech, language, communication and literacy skills in small children are becoming an increasing concern, with children starting school at a below average level for their age. Freya and Amy work out in the community, facilitating many sessions aimed at encouraging parents and carers to read, sing and share books with their children from birth. Studies show that children who are read to and sang with from a very early age do significantly better at school. It helps with many skills such as listening, turn taking, motor skills such as pointing and page turning. Not to mention sharing songs rhymes and books are fun, create lasting memories and help with bonding.

One of these sessions takes place every other Thursday at LFE library, an educationally rich environment for children and adults alike. A place to feel welcomed, take part in a fun, informal and nurturing group. Props and puppets are used to engage the children in the storytelling and singing, and of course ample time afterwards to choose books to take home using your free Leicestershire Libraries Card.

A small charge applies to the group £1 for the first child 50p for every child thereafter per family. This money goes directly back into our project, to support our roles and buy new materials for the group.

Pet microchipping events planned Two more events will be held this summer as part of a campaign by Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council to encourage more dog owners to have their pets micro-chipped.

For a cost of just £10, the Dog Warden will micro-chip any dogs that are taken along to: Wykin Community House, Gwendoline Avenue, Hinckley on Wednesday 18 June between 4pm and 6pm Markfield Community Centre, Mayflower Close, Markfield on Tuesday 29 July between 1pm and 3pm.

Micro-chipping is now the quickest and easiest way for a lost pet to be identified by the Dog Warden, or by a vet, and returned to its rightful owner. Without microchipping, it is estimated that less than half of the animals that go missing each year are reunited with their owners.

From 2016 it will be a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped.

Upward trend in adoption continues The number of adoptions in Leicestershire is continuing to reflect an upward trend. Last year, the County Council found new homes for 58 youngsters last year - this was an increase of 38 per cent compared to the previous 12 months.

There was also a 40 per cent increase in the number of adopters, but the council wants to recruit more adopters as well finding an extra 100 foster carers following a six per cent rise in the number of children in care over the past 12 months.

Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for children and families said: "The figures are really encouraging and the biggest shift seems to be people’s ability to accept that adoption is for them. Much of that is down to the work which has been done to bust myths about who can adopt.

“There’s also been a keen national focus on adoption, and our awareness events in the county have also helped achieve these good results.

“We want to recruit more people and we are very keen to hear from anyone who feels they can make the commitment to support the children.”

The next open evening for potential adopters is being held on Monday, June 30 at County Hall in Glenfield from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

The Association embark on their most ambitious excursion in June with an 8 day holiday in Lake Garda following which they have planned trips to The National Memorial Arboretum , David Austin Roses and Cosford, Southport and Greenwich.

The Association is hosting a show by Belcanto, called “Only Remembered”. This commemorates the start of the Great War. From 16-22 June, we’re encouraging people to spend a night under the stars to find out which creatures they share their homes with, and raise money to help protect wildlife.

UK wildlife will play host to all kinds of campers – adventurous campers will be building and sleeping in dens and shelters, some will stick to the traditional tent, while others plan to sleep on their garden trampoline.

To help people get the most out of their wild night out, we’ve produced a free fundraising pack full of fun ideas to make raising money really easy.

For those who don’t have a garden, the RSPB is also organising some exciting Big Wild Sleepout events across the UK. Fosse Park Training Academy gets connected Students and unemployed residents who are gaining work experience at Fosse Park Academy now have access to a suite of laptop computers thanks to an investment made by Blaby District Council.

The Retail Academy has been developed by Fosse Retail Park and South Leicestershire College and offers the opportunity for college students and locally unemployed 1825 year olds to bolt on practical retail work skills to academic studies.

The aim is for participants to develop their learning experiences and become more “work ready�.

Blaby District Council is supporting the initiative and has invested in the laptop computers as part of its programme of activity to develop the local economy, helping people in the district to improve their skills and chances of getting into work.

Carole Troake, principal economic development officer at Blaby District Council

said: “The Learning Centre has created an alternative learning environment away from the traditional class room so that students and young people looking for work get the benefit of real work experience, adding value to their CVs and improving their chances of gaining paid employment.�

Marian Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive at South Leicestershire College said: “The Fosse Park Academy is an excellent initiative that bridges the gap between education and the world of work.

It offers young people the chance they need to gain necessary work experience to complement their studies and prepare them for future careers. The support the Council has given will really make a difference.�

The four week “Get into Retail� programme is organised by the Princes Trust and includes a certificate in retail knowledge, which the learners study at South Leicestershire College for a two week period. Part of this delivery takes place at Fosse Shopping Park where

participants can contextualise their learning in merchandise production, marketing and selling of products.

Adrian Young, Centre Manager at Fosse Shopping Park, said: “It’s great to see the learning centre initiative progressing especially now with the provision of the laptops kindly provided by Blaby District Council.�

Jay Mackness, aged 25 from Glenfield, is participating in the programme and keen to develop a career in retail. He said: “This course has been really enjoyable and is a great opportunity for me. After only four days I have noticed how people in the group are now coming out of their shells and benefitting.�

Kirby Muxloe W.I. At the April meeting of the Kirby Muxloe W.I. we were treated to history lesson by Jane Arnold on “How to use your rations”, for those ladies who lived through those times it was a trip down memory lane and for everyone else , well we all certainly learned how to make best use of a glut of carrots and parsnips. I can still taste those fake banana sandwiches and carrot biscuits, but I’m afraid I stopped at the fake ham.

Jane was ably assisted by Mrs. Thompson and they showed us endless ways to either make or fake almost everything from stockings to wedding cakes. Jane kept us entertained all evening and she had a very comprehensive collection of memorabilia for us to look at afterwards, as you can see from the photographs.

Botscheson W.I. held a Saturday workshop in April entitled “Flower Pounding”, none of our members were familiar with this craft but one member was curious enough to go and take a look she was then kind enough to bring back her efforts to share with us all.

Penny had a wonderful day discovering what this craft was all about and she said although it was simple in the beginning it was easy to see how you could take it to the next level.

Basically, you chose your flower heads and grasses, lay them onto wax paper, then carefully place a piece of white cotton fabric or watercolour paper on top and then you gently pound away with a small hammer until you see the flower colours bleed through onto the fabric. Continue to pound the flowers and leaves until you get the desired results and then set your fabric aside to dry completely. The workshop also covered additional techniques, including flower trapping that combined well with flower pounding and extends the range of designs that can be produced.

As you can see the results were excellent and members agreed the technique would make lovely cards.

Libraries The consultation on the future use of libraries is running until 7th July and has seen some 2,500 individual responses on the county council's proposals to run up to 36 libraries. There have also been 500 attendees at the county road shows and a further 500 people attending drop-in sessions with library-staff to discuss our plans for the future. It is important to understand that LCC is still committing ÂŁ4.8 million to the service (ÂŁ800k savings requirement) and the 16 most popular libraries, accounting for the vast majority of visits, are being kept open, but with reduced opening hours. Like every other department, libraries have to change in response to changing demand- more people are using E books than borrowing and libraries are also being used for a host of community activities. LCC will support communities to run their local library, but if none come forward, some may unfortunately have to close. This is why we are proposing to cover any closure with a weekly mobile service.

Roads and Infrastructure LCC is part of the Midlands Highways Alliance (MHA) - a group of 21 local authorities who collaborate and pool their resources in awarding contracts for medium to large scale projects. Committed ÂŁ25 million of extra spending on adult social care and waste disposal. Will commit ÂŁ188 million on capital projects and supporting jobs and growth. Supported nearly 400 families to own their first home through our Local Authority Mortgages scheme. Invested

ÂŁ18.6 million to deliver Superfast broadband in Leicestershire with our partners BT, the district councils and the EU. All this has been achieved and none of it will be funded by borrowing. However, we still must continue to reduce our spending by ÂŁ110 million by 2018 because of reduced Government grant.

George Osborne's Budget announced an extension to the current austerity period facing local government- and we must continue to plan ahead to ensure the County Council plays its part in rebalancing the country's finances.

The Transformation Programme In May, the Cabinet committed the County Council to a radical new pathway on how we deliver and commission our services. We call it the 'Transformation Programme' and Cabinet's decision implements a key plank of the 2013 manifesto. In future, the County Council will be smaller and many of its services delivered in different ways- such as community groups running libraries. But we will still be in the business of caring for vulnerable people and keeping our highways safe. As your County Councillor, I will never take my eye off the ball in focusing on our key priorities, despite the dire financial situation we face.

These changes are reflected in the numerous consultations the County Council is currently undertaking with residents- such as new to home to school transport proposals; the future of libraries; reduced funding to voluntary groups and changes to community meals.

Recycling and composting performance covering the period January to December 2013 and predicted performance for 2013/14.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership has achieved an unconfirmed combined recycling, reuse and composting performance of 53.32% from January to December 2013, compared to a performance of 55.46% in 2012/13.

Early indications show that Leicestershire is currently in the top five waste disposal authorities (WDAs) in the country. It is anticipated that there will be a further drop in predicted performance to 51% by the end of the 2013/14 financial year. This drop can primarily be attributed to a change in Environment Agency (EA) guidance which has prohibited the composting of mixed wood collected at the Recycling and Household Waste Sites (RHWS).

Analysis of the figures shows that if wood had been removed from the composting figures in 2012/13, performance in this year would have been 51.04%. This shows that levels of recycling by the public through kerbside collections, bring sites and RHWS have remained consistent. Draft year end performance figures for 2013/14 will be available in July 2014 and will be confirmed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in November 2014. It is anticipated that a new method of calculating recycling performance will be released by Defra in the summer of 2014. It has been reported that initially this indicator will be used to report on how the UK as a whole is performing against the EU target to recycle 50% of waste from households by 2020 and will eventually be rolled out more widely to report on the performance of individual authorities.

Leicestershire County Council is running a village shop support scheme, to help village shops and Post Offices develop and upgrade their services. It is offering grants of up to £3,000 to improve the range, quality and accessibility of services at the heart of local communities.

A Beautiful Local Garden is Opening to the Public A beautiful local garden is opening to the public again in July under the National Gardens Scheme to raise money for several worthwhile NGS charities.

Last summer, during two Sundays, Mike & Liz Newcombed welcomed 500 visitors to their Newtown Linford garden and were able to raise £2500 for the NGS charities. The interest in and the enjoyment of this garden has resulted in several local groups, including gardening clubs, arranging private visits to the garden this summer. The Newtown Linford Gardening Club will also, once again, use this venue for their Summer Party on Tuesday 22nd July.

On both Sunday 6th and Sunday 13th July the garden, which is situated halfway along Ulverscroft Lane between Newtown Linford and Ulverscroft, will be open to the public from 11.00am – 5.00pm.

The 2-acre SW facing garden has stunning views across Charnwood countryside. Near the house are patios, water features, flower and shrub beds, fruit trees, greenhouses and vegetable plots. Lawns then slope down to a gravel garden, a large wildlife pond with waterfall and three small areas of woodland, with pleasant walks through many species of trees. The lower two thirds of this garden has been created since 2004, with over 160 conifers and deciduous trees planted. There are several places to sit and relax around the garden.

Light refreshments will be available. There will also be plant sales, a book stall and a craft stall, selling jewellery, scarves etc. Admission for adults is £3.50, children are free and dogs on leads are welcome with well-behaved owners. Chairman’s Report – Ratby Annual Parish Meeting Yet another busy year for the Parish Council and the village. You will remember that the Council co-ordinated the Coronation Carnival held on 27th May at Ratby Sports Club, together with the village groups and which proved a huge success, raising £1000 for the Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit. This event was well supported by the residents and visitors.

the Parish Council at a cost of £300 per annum, which has recently been increased to £400 per annum. Council has also replaced a Springie Whale on the toddlers’ area at this site. Dependent upon the terms of the new lease, the Council will consider placing more equipment on the site in future.

The commemorative Diamond Jubilee Copper Beech tree planted last year has died and will be replaced.

The two wooden planters at the corner of Desford Lane were replaced this year by recycled plastic containers at a cost of approximately £1,000 and will require less maintenance. The remainder of the wooden planters will be replaced by the recycled plastic ones as and when necessary.

Allotments The Parish Council provides two allotment sites at Taverner Drive and Pear Tree allotments in Desford Lane, both of which are leased to and managed by the Allotment Association.

Ferndale Park The skate park has proved to be a huge success with the young people. However, there is still a big problem with vandalism on the park. The Council has had to remove a lot of graffiti from the equipment over the past year and the damage to the teen tower has cost the Council in the region of some £2,000 to replace climbing chains, grips etc. The community garden has lost some of its shrubs, plants and the Parish Council is looking to re-vamp this area once again. The daffodils in the park were beautiful and provided a lovely display, that is until one or possibly more of the residents decided to pick them to take home!

The Council also renewed the front fencing and gates, including a kissing gate, at Ferndale Park at a cost of approximately £5,000. This was necessary due to the fact that the gate post had been damaged and it was not possible to secure the car park.

Due to damage caused to the safety surfacing the Council spent approximately £4,000 on repairing the surfaces.

Youth Club The Parish Council funded Youth Workers to provide a Youth Club facility for the young people, which was held at the Parish Church on alternate Friday evenings.

However, despite a determined effort by the Parish Council to continue this facility, the lack of adequate youth worker provision, regrettably had to terminate this function. The Parish Council is working towards providing another facility in this respect in the next future.

Brook Meadow (Brook Drive) The Council has had to spend money in hiring skips due to the rubbish being dumped in the meadow and the stream. This rubbish appears to be from some building sites and also domestic carpets, chairs etc. If anyone sees any rubbish being dumped please contact the Parish Council office and report it.

Dog Fouling This is still a huge problem around the village, despite the number of dog waste bins!

Articles have been put in both the Local & Wot magazines by the Borough Councillors and the Parish Council, requesting dog owners to clean up after their animals. The dog waste bins are emptied weekly, which costs the Parish Council in the region of £250 per month.

There is an element of vandalism to the dog waste bins too! Two of the smaller dog waste bins situated in Lockley Close and Nicholas Drive will be replaced by larger bins and it is hoped that this will alleviate the over-flowing problems in these areas.

Litter Litter scattered far and wide is still an ongoing problem and is particularly horrendous in the parks, despite the efforts of Simon Ingall, our Maintenance Man to clear up.

The Council’s grateful thanks should also be given to the team of volunteer litter pickers in the village.

Bloor’s Judicial Review

proposed development on green wedge land opposite Groby College, the Judicial Review has prompted referral to the Secretary of State.

Village Society The Council was very saddened to hear that the Village Society will cease to be after approximately 40 years’ existence. Over the years this has proved to be both entertaining and informative to residents and unless someone is willing to take on the Committee roles the Society will close after the June meeting.

Christmas Decoration Lighting The Parish Council in the past has been criticised for not providing street decorations at Christmas time. Christmas 2013 was very different, the Council spent approximately £6,000 on the Christmas lighting and to the majority of residents this was well received.

There was an additional cost of approximately £3,500 for installation of special connection boxes for each lamp post which housed a Christmas decoration. Such was the success of this lighting the Council will be extending the provision of the lighting along Station Road to Dane Hill junction for 2014. This will obviously involve extra expenditure and the connection boxes will have to be funded for an extra 5 lamp posts.

Churchyard As is usual and part of the Precept, the Parish Council supports the upkeep of the Churchyard at St Philips & St James’ Church and Council donated £1,800 for this purpose.

Provision of Defibrillator This year the Parish Council is looking to provide a defibrillator in the village to assist the Emergency Services and has made application to Hinckley & Bosworth Parish & Community Initiative Fund for a grant towards this provision.

Keep Your Skin Safe In e Sun Almost everyone loves the sun. The rays of the sun make us feel good and we feel happier.

Although the sun’s short term effects make us feel great, in the long term it can cause damage to the skin which can ultimately be fatal.

The sun emits large amounts of harmful radiation, if ALL the radiation reached us on the Earth’s surface, it could kill every living organism on the planet. But luckily for us we have an ozone layer above us. Approximately 97% of the harmful radiations are screened out by the ozone layer. However some radiations in the form of UVA and UVB still reach us. These are Ultraviolet rays which are invisible to the naked eye. UVA penetrates the deep layers of the skin, and is responsible for skin tanning, aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer. UVB penetrates the upper layer of the skin, and is responsible for the production of Vitamin D (needed for healthy bones) but also causes sunburn and skin cancer.

UVA and UVB can cause many problems and potentially the worst problem they can cause is skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, around 100,000 people a year are diagnosed with it in the UK. More than 12,000 of these cancers are malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Each year, around 2,200 people die from skin cancer.

There are artificial ways to receive UVA and UVB rays in the form of Sunbeds. These are not safe and should be avoided as the risks are the same if not greater.

Skin cancer is normally categorised into 2 groups, Melanoma and Non-melanoma.

Melanoma is a rare and serious type of cancer that begins in the skin and can spread to other organs in the body. The most common sign of melanoma is the appearance of a new mole or a change in an existing mole. If this happens, you should see your GP immediately.

Non-Melanoma is more common, it slowly develops in the upper layers of the skin. The first sign of non-melanoma skin cancer is usually the appearance of a lump or patch on the skin that doesn't heal after a few weeks.

Skin cancer can affect anyone, but people most at risk have fair skin, red or fair hair, moles or freckles, personal or family history of skin cancer, or might have already had sunburn when young.

People with naturally brown or black skin are less likely to get skin cancer as darker skin has some protection against UV rays. However, skin cancer can still occur.

In order to prevent skin cancer it is essential to prevent over exposure to the UV rays of the

sun, however this does not mean to avoid the sun totally as we require UVB rays to produce vitamin D (needed for healthy bones). It is about striking a balance between the two.

The right amount of Vitamin D production by exposure to the sun will vary from person to person, people with darker skin require longer exposure than people with fairer skin. As a general rule, short daily sun exposure during the summer months (10 minutes) for light skinned people is enough to produce the necessary Vitamin D. Short daily sun exposures avoid sunburn which can be painful and can also increase the risks of skin cancer.

Sunburn occurs when there is over exposure to UVB rays. It causes the top layers of skin to release chemicals that make blood vessels swell and leak fluids. Skin turns red and feels hot and painful, and severe sunburn can lead to swelling and blisters. Sunburn in childhood can greatly increase your risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Some experts believe that just one episode of blistering sunburn before the age of 20 can double your chance of getting malignant melanoma.

When treating sunburn the aim is to cool the skin and relieve any pain or symptoms.

Applying a cold flannel over the area helps cool the skin, while moisturising lotions and creams help keep it moist. Moisturisers that contain aloe vera help to soothe your skin and calamine lotion can relieve any itching or soreness. The Village Pharmacy in Kirby Muxloe stock a variety of creams and lotions that can help with sunburn. If you feel faint, dehydrated or have severe blistering, or a baby has sunburn you should see your GP immediately.

You can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer and being sunburnt by protecting your skin with sunscreen. Sunscreens with at least a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 should be used. SPF basically means the amount of time that you can normally spend in the sun without being burnt multiplied by the factor number.

So if you have very fair skin and will burn after 10 minutes in the sun, by applying a SPF cream of 15, you can then roughly have 150 minutes of sun exposure without being burnt. (10 minutes multiplied by factor of 15 equals 150 minutes.) Sun protection factors are a rough estimate and will vary according to numerous other factors such as intensity of sun, colour of skin, amount of cream applied etc. At the Village pharmacy we have special offers on many sunscreens for the summer.

The following advice should also help in preventing sunburn and skin cancer: • Avoid strong sunlight whenever possible, particularly when the sun is strongest (between 11am and 3pm), and cover up with loose clothing and a hat.

• When buying sunscreen, choose one with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least factor 15 – the higher the better – that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

• Apply a generous amount of sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply regularly at least every two to three hours. Even water-resistant sun screens should be reapplied after you come out of the water.

• A stick application with a high SPF is useful for exposed areas, such as your nose, ears and lips. These areas tend to burn more easily.

• Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.

Too Young To Bowl Too Old To Bowl There are no upper or lower limits when it comes to our favoured sport.As can be seen on television there is a good age difference between bowlers and we at Kirby Muxloe bowls club have two extremes amongst our players.

Connor Awarded a 4 year Soccer Scholarship in the USA Connor has been awarded a 4 year Soccer Scholarship to attend William Baptist University in Arkansas USA from August this year. Aswell as playing 'international soccer' he will be majoring in PE & Sports Coaching while he's there. His conference (league) includes teams from Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois so he will be touring the southern states while he's there.

Our oldest player is Sid Johnson who, at 90 years of age, is still keen and turning out 3 times each week. Sid also plays at the Leicester indoor bowls club at Slater street in Leicester during the winter months. Sid was born in Groby in 1924 and began bowling at he the age of 58 and still enjoys his regular workout.

Secondly we have Kieran who started his bowling at just 8 years of age and now at the ripe old age of 10 he is playing for the Leicestershire county under 25 team, where he is the youngest player by player by some years, Kieran plays regularly in our adult teams with confidence and success. He is expected by his coaches to reach the very top of his game and it is predicted he will get to international level.

Along with Kieran we have a young group of boys and girls of various ages and we want to increase this and develop a strong team of youngsters to compete with other clubs.

We have had a good response to our campaign to get more new adult players but we are constantly looking to strengthen our present teams. Anyone thinking of joining us will be able to bowl on any day subject to weather conditions.

He is currently a student at Groby Community College where he's studying for his A levels. He has always been a keen sportsman representing his schools/college in various different sports and is also an avid snowboarder. But his first love is football - after spending several years playing for local teams as a formidable goalkeeper, he's just spent his first complete season on pitch, playing for both Anstey Nomads U18 team and Groby U18 team.

He is due to fly out to Arkansas on 11 August - a day after he gets back from a 4 week charity expedition to Kenya with Camps International. Connor has been fundraising for the 'once in a lifetime' charity trip for the past 18 months and didn't realise both opportunities would be presented at the same time while there he will be taking part in conservation projects, which involve him learning to scuba dive and community development work, including building a school for the local children. His fundraising has included a sponsored 'Snowboard down Everest', a tribute band night , competing in the 10 km Avalanche Run in freezing conditions and making hundreds of jars of chilli jam!

All in all an exciting few months are ahead for Connor and as a family, we are extremely proud of what he's achieved.
