Magic is in the air at Charnwood Museum after landing an exciting new exhibition.

CORT CAPTURES THIRD MIDLAND OPEN TITLE Matthew Cort captured his third Midland Open title in style, winning the event on the first hole of a play-off.

Cort – a member at Birstall during his amateur days but who now plays out of Beedles Lake G C – tied on eight under par with Lee Clarke (Beeston Fields), who won the event in 2012.

The exhibition will display illustrations of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, which has been reimagined by illustrator Jim Kay.

Another former Birstall member – Richard Reed (Glen Gorse) - led at half-way with a morning round of 64, but could only add a level par 70 in the second round and finished third.

Cort added an afternoon round of 67 (three under par) to his opening 65 for a 132, which Clarke matched with scores of 68 and 64.

The omens for the play-off were good for Cort, as he had eagled the hole – the short risk/reward par four ninth hole – in the morning round. In the play-off he again drove the green and took two putts for a championship-winning birdie.

It was his third Midland Open title, having won in 2013 after a four-way play-off when his opponents included former Ryder Cup stars Paul Broadhurst and Peter Baker, and 2014, before being tied runner up last year behind Baker.

The Birstall course again showed its teeth, with only 11 of the 73 professional golfers finishing the 36 holes under par.

The victory means Cort is heavy favourite to retain his Midlands Order of Merit title, having won two of the four tournaments and come 2nd and 3rd in the others, with just one more to come.

His artwork has been published in a new illustrated edition of the book which was released last year. The exhibition will feature original artwork including sketches, oils and digital prints.

Even though the exhibition will not open until October, excitement is already building.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council said: “We’re tremendously excited that this exhibition is coming to Charnwood as it’s such a popular and well-loved story.

“We’re always keen to have diverse and exciting displays at the museum so it will be fantastic to see the original illustrations and experience the world of Harry Potter brought to life.”

The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 15, and runs until Sunday, January 8, 2017.

The loan of the exhibition was secured by Leicestershire County Council and has been curated by Seven Stories in association with Bloomsbury Children’s Books.

Charnwood Museum is jointly run by Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council.

The exhibition is part of Loogabarooga, Loughborough’s Festival of Children’s Illustrated Literature which will take place from October 19 until October 24.

I’ve actioned a lot of support work around a number of planning applications and related resident correspondence this month.

It was lovely to be invited to Burley Homes open day, see premises, and meet long standing residents. It was even nicer that many remembered me from my visit there last year.

There were three visitors to our bank holiday weekend surgery. Issues raised included air pollution and empty shops. I’ve contacted Charnwood borough council’s (CBC’s) air monitoring team, and am pleased to find emissions within Birstall Wanlip ward are currently within acceptable levels. As they sit on his ward, I understand Cllr Bentley is progressing empty shop concerns with a newly appointed empty homes officer at CBC. Similarly and separately, a resident on my ward reported overgrowth on paths along the A6 to me. As this seems likely to fall within a maintenance remit of county council highways department, I’ve asked Cllr. Bentley to take this forwards for resolution, as he is also our county councillor.

I attended a performance scrutiny panel meeting. There were a number of topics on this agenda, and discussed, but perhaps a car parking assessment survey and related report stimulated most debate. Panel present concluded best to discuss this further in six

months time, by which time further progress could hopefully be reported. If you think you may have any useful feedback to add to this process, and as the assessment is being ran

Almost 40% of working families in the Quit Smoking East Midlands only one paycheque Stoptober 2016 away from losing their home ALMOST 40% of working families in the East Midlands could not afford to pay their rent or mortgage for more than a month if they lost their job, new figures from Shelter reveal today.

With little or no personal savings to fall back on, the Shelter and YouGov study found that this means a staggering 284,000 working families in the region could be just one paycheque away from losing their home. Even more shockingly, the research also revealed that more than a quarter of working parents in the East Midlands face the nightmare prospect of being immediately unable to make their next rent or mortgage payment if they lost their job, and couldn’t get another one straightaway.

These worrying findings mirror recent government figures, which show there are 16.5 million working age adults in the UK with no savings at all. High housing costs remain a major area of concern for most working families in the region, with almost half saying housing puts the biggest strain on their household budget.

Enjoying the Allotments Birstall Allotment Society members and visitors enjoyed their annual Open Day on Sunday September 4th on the Meadow Lane Allotment site.

The forecast rain held off while people looked around the allotments, browsed the stalls and took part in the competitions. All the money raised was donated to the Air Ambulance. Members were able to swop stories of their growing successes and pick up tips for improving crops which hadn’t been so good, while enjoying the refreshments provided. It was a very sociable and informative event.

Birstall currently has vacant half and full plots on all three of its allotment sites – Meadow Lane, Worcester Avenue and Greengate Lane – so non-residents of Birstall can now apply for tenancies of these. Charnwood Orchestra Charnwood Orchestra’s season begins with a wonderful programme of music by Mozart, Handel and Haydn in Barrow’s Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 24th September starting at 7.30. There will be an interval bar.

The works consists of Haydn’s Symphony No 93, Mozart’s Adagio in E and Rondo in C, both for violin and orchestra, Handel’s Water Music Suite No 2 and Mozart’s Symphony No 38 “Prague”.

U3A Invites Everyone to a Birthday Celebration Syston and District University of the Third Age (U3A) will celebrate their first “birthday” with an Open Day to be held in the Old School Room in the Syston Community Centre on Wednesday 23rd November starting at 10.30 a.m.

And they have much to celebrate! Launched on October 2015, they already have close to 210 enrolled Members who take part in over 25 different interest Groups with more than 100 regularly attending the monthly general meeting with invited guest speaker. (This general meeting is held in the Malthouse Suite of the Syston Conservative Club on the second Wednesday of each month, starting at 10.30 a.m.)

Thurcaston & Cropston Brownies & Guides Annual Review

In the art attack problem the Guides worked on the floor with paper, foil and material to create a huge pale blue, silver and white replica of the celebration badge. A photograph of this was uploaded to the national Girl Guides website The Brownies were working on the Music Appreciation badge and began by dancing to music that evoked different emotions. Then they made musical instruments such as shakers, and brought in their own violins etc. ‘A Sailor Went to Sea’ was a clapping song performed in pairs and we moved onto the more difficult ‘Edelweiss’ where we sat in a big circle singing and trying to clap hands with the persons on our left and on our right. The Guides tie dyed T shirts and cooked small pancakes by candle power on an upturned empty baked bean tin. Meanwhile the Brownies were enjoying races with rubbery pancakes. February 22nd is Thinking Day when Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts etc all over the world celebrate the joint birthdays of Lord and Lady Baden Powell.

We remembered Guides from other countries by trying mehendi hand patterns. The Brownies held a traditional Thinking Day ceremony by lighting candles. As Mother’s Day approached the Brownies painted the lids of pots of home made lip salve to give as gifts, while the Guides also made the lip salve.

We played in the waves and whooshed down the flumes at Leicester Leys swimming pool: The Guides organised a party with a 1970’s / 80’s theme in the choice of food, games and dress. Pass the Parcel and Chocolate 6 were enjoyed by the Brownies.

On a beautiful summer evening we rolled hard boiled eggs down from the top of Old John Hill as fast as possible without breaking

Several Brownies and two Guides won prizes at the Thurcaston village show in September with their potato printing and dream catchers, Potatoes featured again as we studied the Science badge using them as a battery to light a torch bulb. The Guides undertook the duct/duck tape challenge to make a water container. Audrey Matthews from De Montfort University demonstrated the science of exploding popcorn. We were forced to eat chocolate to study the properties of its taste and we identified acids and alkalis in foods using the colour change indicator made from red cabbage. Forensic science featured in fingerprinting as the Brownies discovered who had stolen from the money box .The Guides analysed loops and whorls in their fingerprints and became detectives in Cluedo. More science fun was had as we made sherbet and investigated cornflour slime.

With bonfire night approaching we studied the components and colours in rockets. We watched the dazzling fireworks at our bonfire party, ate sausages, toasted marshmallows and threw our home made Guys into the flames. We prepared for Remembrance Day by learning about the war memorials in the national arboretum near Alrewas, and set acorns to grow. We attended the Remembrance service in All Saint’s church, Thurcaston and laid a poppy wreath.

Christmas crafts involved the Brownies making a small wreath,(the Guides also made Xmas trees) from pasta shapes and later painting them. We finished the term with a session of Taekwondo, a Xmas pyjama party and a visit to the pantomime

We have 5 girls working towards the highest award for Guides, the Baden Powell award and some of their tasks have involved organising activities for the other girls. The Senior Section, 14-25 year olds, was started 100 years ago and the SSMSB (Senior Section Mission Spectacular badge) to celebrate this centenary was our next challenge. For the Guides, team work was put to the test in a paper cups challenge. Fitness was measured by our heart rate before and after skipping.

the egg. Having studied different types of camp fires, such as ‘star’ and ‘log cabin’, the Guides planned a cook out for the following week at The Foxy. The Brownies went to Watermead Park, visited the Mammoth, and the adventure playground then followed a tracking signs trail of sticks and stones. Crafts featured next as we made paper mosaic pictures and egg box figures for the Village Show in September. We learned the techniques of brass rubbing and visited the brass rubbing trail in Bennion Pools. The Guides also took their dogs for a walk from the Pools into Castle Hill Park. We learned how to make cake pops and gave them as presents on Father’s Day and the BP girls sold them and bric a brac and ran various games at the Thurcaston church fete.

The Guides helped to collect £80 in the Barnados envelopes. On a hot evening we joined Leicestershire Orienteering club to map read and run a course around Old John.

Another challenge for the BP girls was to organise the games for the Brownies Wet n Wild evening on the school field. We all enjoyed throwing water bombs and using super soakers. On the last Wednesday evening Richard Hill Primary school pupils were performing Simba, their version of the Lion King. Leaders and Guides went along to watch and support some of the Brownies who were acting on stage or singing in the chorus.
