Bowls Club Raises £1200 for Charity

Birstall Flower Club Birstall Flower Club announces it’s Christmas Open Evening on Wednesday 23rd November 2016 at Birstall Village Hall, 6.30 for a 7.15pm start. A qualified National NAFAS demonstrator: NICK GROUNDS will be making some stunning flower arrangements and you can watch how he does this. Buy a raffle ticket and you may even win one of the arrangements. The title of his demonstration is “Seasonal Anticipation”

The outdoor bowls season has now drawn to a close and late in September members of St Margaret's Co-operative BC gathered for their final farewells. We usually play bowls but the weather was so poor we spent an hour or two playing games and quizzes in the clubhouse.

We are also running a workshop for you to make your own Christmas door wreath.

Each year the club president, this year Christine Townsend, chooses a charity which the club supports with fundraising.

This year's charity was 'Wishes 4 Kids' which was created to grant wishes for children who, for example have suffered major abuse, are bereaved or who are terminally ill.

Nicola Adcock visited our club and she explaned that the Charity has granted wishes to hundreds of children since it was founded in 2002. Nicola is a commited fundraiser for the Charity. She became involved when her son, Jack who had Down's Syndrome and has since died, was granted his wish to go to Disneyland Paris.

"There is nothing more amazing than the look on a child's face when their wish is being granted." Nicola explained. "For parents it is a moment they will treasure for the rest of their lives – a time when their child forgot their suffering." Nicola thanked us and assured us that the, "generous donation would help the Charity to continue doing its life enhancing work".

The work is all made possible by the generosity of the people of Leicestershire because there is no lottery funding or other official support for the charity. The picture shows Nicola Adcock, with her daughter Ruby, accepting a cheque for £1200 on behalf of Wishes 4 Kids, from club president Christine Townsend.

Great Birstall Bake Off White Horse Riding High after another successful Great Birstall Bake off and World’s Largest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support

and so far £940 was raised- a truly staggering figure.

The carthorse themed raffle stand was also a grand success and bunting helped to create a wonderfully rustic British village aesthetic, with an excellent selection of prizes with a delicious cake from David North at Rothley and beautiful flowers from Lilly and Grace to name only two.

This year there was also a bouncy castle, face painting, Nail bar and temporary Tattoos for the Children and some Sunday morning Jazz were added to the event which added to the ambience and fun of the day.

The flour dusting has settled on 2016's Great Birstall Bake Off, and with 44 entries and a great array of prizes, up for grabs, it was a great success.

All categories were superbly supported, with both genders and all ages competing for the most prestigious prize in Birstall's bakery calendar. The judging panel were astounded by the selection; in particular the ‘Under 16’ entries which were even more creative than ever.

Monthly Report from Councillor Renata Jones Another month, another surgery, another report. How time flies!

I attended and delivered a speech at plans committee, in relation to an application for an additional school in close proximity to Hallam Fields, and Long Meadow Way. As you may guess, I’ve had a lot of emails about this. I understand a previous deadline for comments has potentially been extended. So do keep forwarding your comments, complaints, and complements, in relation to the scheme, to development.control@charnwood.gov.uk for consideration by planning officers, and cc myself in using Cllr.renata.jones@charnwood .gov.uk. I’ve seen a few concerns come through, I’ll endeavour to answer what I can on my limited understanding. To surmise and inform, this development, as far as I’m aware, if approved, is seen as a ‘sustainable urban extension’ from Birstall, within core strategy.

As such, this could imply it would be built as it would be able to use some of the service provision from Birstall, during build phases.

However, I’m also told, as a ‘garden city’ scheme with management trust, the intension is this has self contained amenities and from inception. This is proposed rather than being dependant on ‘section 106 break points’,

associated build stages to materialise.

Traditionally a certain number of houses would trigger an amenity to be created, per large development. Land this sits upon is technically Wanlip. Although there is a significant gap between this development and Wanlip village, as it currently stands.

Given the number of houses, it seems widely thought, the boundary commission, would potentially eventually reclassify Broadnook, as a stand alone village. However, borough council and planning works in advance, as it must, whilst boundary commission work in arrears, on actual number of houses built at scheduled review intervals.

In related news, I’ve noticed in light of Cossington bridge closures, the A46 has been heavily contested at rush hour, weekdays. I’d asked again only last month for improvements to slip roads at Wanlip. I’d gathered a lot of evidence from police and ambulance services to support this request.

Having asked Highways England previously, and been told whilst a need – no funds are available. I have thus this time asked for funding. I’d asked for this as part of section 106 considerations, or similar, in relation to a development at Broadnook. I say, ‘or similar’, as I had heard ‘section 106’ could be evolving slightly, potentially getting renamed and improved. Essentially, new name or not, this is a system where monies are collected from developers, for supporting impacts to infrastructure from development. If you would like to support this cause, write to development.control@charnwood.gov.uk, cc me in, and quote reference P/16/1660/2.

Equally you can make contact in the same way and advise any other improvements you feel should be considered in relation to this build.

I’m also aware that concerns continue regarding a change of use planning application. I’ve written and supported ward referral to plans committee for further discussion. Similarly, to express any concerns you may have related to this, write to development.control@charnwood.gov.uk, cc

This month three visitors came to say hello in surgery. Sadly, two of them, actually wanted to speak to the neighbourhood watch committee, and had got the wrong room hire week. Our third visitor, came in the form of a local passionate campaigner, who’d like to see more traffic calming measures. We spoke for most of surgery session, and consulted police in neighbouring office. He’d gathered lots of evidence to support request, and asked as many relevant people as he could source. This is primarily a county council matter, however I have assisted where possible, requesting clarification from borough where relevant, and have escalated to our county councillor points of that discussion. I’ve also raised to the highways forum, with police speed check evidence. I gather some progress to date has been made, however said resident would, understandably, like to see this project come to fruition.

I was pleased to be invited to, and attend, the mayor’s civic event in Birstall’s church, and witness a multi faith gathering, with several representatives from across our community. It was nice to see so many of you there.

Don’t miss the Potter spell cast over deadline for Charnwood Museum secondary school place applications A magical spell will be cast over Charnwood Museum with the arrival of a new Harry Potter exhibition. The display opens on Saturday, October 15 and will feature illustrations of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, which has been reimagined by illustrator Jim Kay.

PARENTS of children who are to start secondary school next year have until the end of October to apply for a place. Leicestershire County Council is encouraging parents and carers to submit their form on time to ensure their child does not miss out on a place in 2017. Moving to secondary school is not an automatic process, and parents need to ensure they have applied for a place before the closing date.

Last year, 95.5% of Leicestershire pupils attained their first preference for secondary school, compared to 94.2% in the previous year.

Cllr Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: We want as many children as possible to go to their first place of school, and the council has worked really hard to help achieve this. By completing the admissions form on time, parents can help ensure that this can continue.

The transfer process is the same for all secondary schools, whether they are community, voluntary controlled, voluntary aided, academy, trust, faith, free or studio schools. Parents can apply online at www.leics.gov.uk/admissions or call 0116 305 6684 for general enquiries about the admissions process.

His artwork has been published in a new illustrated edition of the book which was released last year. The display will feature original work including sketches, oils and digital prints.

There will also be a variety of merchandise available to buy, from copies of the illustrated book to Harry Potter soft toys and stationary.

The exhibition is part of the Loogabarooga Festival which opens on October 19 and celebrates children’s illustrated literature. Over the course of six days, the festival offers fun for all the family including a series of author talks, workshops and events at venues in Loughborough.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council said: “It’s so exciting to have the exhibition here as part of the Loogabarooga Festival.

“Harry Potter is such a well-loved story by children and adults alike, so it’s wonderful to be able to experience the magical world brought to life through these illustrations.”

The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 15, and runs until Sunday, January 8, 2017.

Mountsorrel Poppy Appeal 2016 In the aftermath of the First World War people wanted to remember those who had given their lives for peace and freedom. The poppy, the only thing which grew following the devastation on the Western Front in Flanders and Picardy, was chosen as the emblem of remembrance and to coincide with the third anniversary of the Armistice on 11 November 1921 poppies were sold to raise money for the ex-Service community. Ninety-five years on and that tradition continues with the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The Appeal benefits service people and their families from all the campaigns from the 1st World War to today – remember there has only been one year (1968) since the end of 2nd World War when a British Service person has not been killed on active duty somewhere across the world. The long term legacy of support that is needed for our service personnel and their families as a result of operations in Afghanistan alone is stark. There, between 2003 and 2015, we suffered 454 dead and several thousand wounded in action. The Royal British Legion, with your support, and in co-operation with partner charities including Help for Heroes and individual Service and Regimental charities is leading the way in delivering that support.

Nationally the Poppy Appeal raised over £34 million last year but we spend at least £1.7 million every week of the year on our longstanding welfare support initiatives which include: ·

Running our Care Homes and Break Centres

Providing a Benefits and Money Advice service which has helped over 11,000 individuals to date;

Making direct Grants totalling £24 million awarded to 42 organisations;

Rothley Community Library The Race Evening went down a storm at the Rothley Centre last month, and it could become an annual fixture. The hall was full, and everyone bet on a videoed race. Excitement grew through the evening, people urging their horse on and cheers for the winner. You could have a great time and bet on every race for £10. About £570 was raised for the library, a fantastic result for a very good evening.
