More than half a million people are expected to watch and count their garden birds for this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch in January. The world’s largest garden wildlife survey, now in its 37th year, takes place on 30 and 31 January 2016. Since it began it has provided valuable information about the changes in numbers of birds using our gardens in winter.

Continuing declines include starlings and song thrushes, which have dropped by an alarming 80 and 70 per cent respectively since the Birdwatch began in 1979. There is slightly better news for the house sparrow, as its long term decline appears to have continued to slow, and it remains the most commonly spotted bird in our gardens. However, its numbers have dropped by 57% since 1979.

Daniel added: “The threats to our wildlife means that it’s facing tough times. For example it is estimated that we’ve lost more than half of our hedgehogs in the last 50 years. We're going to include this part of the survey every year now, enabling us to monitor the distribution of our other wildlife as well as trends in bird numbers.”

The survey is part of the RSPB’s Giving Nature a Home campaign, aimed at tackling the housing crisis facing the UK’s threatened wildlife. The RSPB is asking people to provide a place for wildlife in their own gardens and outside spaces – whether it’s putting up a nest box for birds, creating a pond to support a number of different species or building a home for a hedgehog. The Big Garden Birdwatch is just one of the steps you can take to help nature near you. Wherever you live, you can help give nature a home.

Santa’s Soar Valley Tour The route has been announced for Soar Valley Rotary’s Santa tour this year.

Santa’s route starts in Mountsorrel on 8th & 9th December, visiting Barrow on 10th, 11th & 15th, Sileby on 16th & 17th, Rothley 18th, and ending in Birstall on 21st and 22nd. As usual Santa will be greeting families from his sleigh, which will be drawn by a vehicle kindly loaned by Loughborough Kia, whilst Soar Valley Rotarians will be collecting for Rotary charities.

There will also be chance to see Santa at various businesses along the valley including the Rothley Coop’ (12th) , Red Lion (13th) and Budgens (19th & 20th).

All of the money raised goes to help good causes and the to date the Club has donated over £200,000 for local charities large & small.

Charities which have benefited include LOROS, Rainbows, MacMillan, Prostaid, Age UK & the Air Ambulance and we have helped young people through Wishes 4 Kids, Rotary Youth Exchange. We also responded to international emergencies with disaster boxes and support Rotary’s drive to rid the world of polio “End Polio Recent grants include the Sorrel Youth Café, Mountsorrel and the Carl Gunns Community Gym in Birstall.

St Margaret's Co-operative Bowls Club The outdoor bowls season has drawn to a close. On Birstall Road the St Margaret's Co-operative Bowls Club marked its closing day with a final get-together on a rainy Monday afternoon.

Each year the club supports a charity at the president's choice and by one means or another collects funds for a worthy cause.

This year we supported the Peter Le Marchant Trust which provides canal boat trips and holidays for disabled and the seriously ill of all ages. It has three boats which ply the waterways in the summer months.

The club President Pat Allen said, “I am most impressed with this charity's work and it deserves to be better known. You cannot over estimate the value of what it does. These canal breaks really help people to take their minds off their troubles as they tune in to the slower place of life.” A cheque for just over £1300 was handed to Richard Teare, one of the trust's full time officers, who thanked the club for its generosity.

TOP AWARD FOR LEICESTER JOURNALIST A Leicester journalist is celebrating winning one of the most prestigious awards available for agricultural journalists.

Jonathan Wheeler, who lives in Elmfield Avenue Birstall, is a former agricultural correspondent of the Leicester Mercury, and press officer of the Royal Agricultural Society of England.

He now works freelance and won the award for an article published by Farm Machinery Journal on a modern cattle building that incorporates a range of innovative design and equipment to improve cattle health and environmental performance.

Jonathan Wheeler with his wife Susan highlighted the use of new technology in farming and attracted a record 17 entries. But the judging panel – all other leading agricultural journalists – said Jonathan’s article was a clear winner.

Doreen Forsyth, from sponsors Keenan – a major Irish machinery manufacturer – said: “The judges complemented the article for being packed with innovation and concise information, including financial details, and making good use of quotes and comments. It described an innovative system that is of interest to a wide range of readers”.

He was presented with the award – a certificate and £1,000 prize - at the Guild of Agricultural Journalists’ Harvest Lunch, held at the Stationers’ Hall in London.

“It’s a great thrill to win such a major award ahead of such a large field, especially as the judges were all peers who I greatly respect”, says Jonathan.

Rothley Church and its Candlelight Concert Medea Bindewald and her harpsichord return to Rothley Parish Church for a special concert on Saturday 19th December 2015, starting at 7.30pm. The performance will introduce the quartet, Vermilion, featuring Soprano Olivia Bell, Nicolette Moonen-Violin, Susanna Pell-Viola da Gamba and Medea BindewaldHarpsichord. Ticket 2 Tokyo Loughborough Unearths Potential Paralympians The recent Ticket 2 Tokyo Wheelchair Tennis talent ID day at Loughborough University saw players from across the region try their hand at wheelchair tennis as the search begins for potential GB stars for the 2020 Paralympics in Japan under the watchful eye of National Wheelchair Coach Martyn Whait and former Paralympian Jayant Mistry.

Martyn said “We had 11 new players...it was fantastic to see so many new players enjoying wheelchair tennis!”

The Midlands is becoming a real hotbed of talent for the sport, with 3 likely members of the GB squad for Rio 2016 coming from the area, and with a weekly junior wheelchair tennis squad now firmly established, it’s hope the next generation will be from this area as well.

Importantly, days like the one at Loughborough give aspiring athletes a chance to show what they can do in a sport that allows them to demonstrate their strengths. One of the junior players in attendance said “I loved it! I have played loads of sports, but never feel like I’m any good and often struggle to keep up. But wheelchair tennis has made me realise that I can be good at a sport, and everyone accepts me for me, not the girl who wears splints” and one of the parents added “I love to see them playing wheelchair tennis as they get to learn a new skill, exercise and yet not feel their skills are worthless in comparison with others around them”.

Each winter, one older person dies every seven minutes because of the cold weather. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm in winter.

Knitters in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are being called upon to create little hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February 2016. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects. Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on local knitters to get as many hats as possible to them by the end of November 2015.

77th Leicester (Bradgate) Scout Group.

BIRSTALL’S EURO-BID FALLS SHORT

After reading a recent article about the Soar Valley Community Food Project, the 77th Leicester (Bradgate) Beaver Scout Colony, based in Thurcaston, decided that we wanted to help and learn more.

As part of their Community Impact Staged Activity Badge, and over the last few weeks, the Beavers have been collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the food bank based at Rothley Baptist Church.

Birstall Golf Club finished 15th in the European Golf Club championship, staged at Minthis Hills G C in Cyprus.

The club qualified to represent England at the event by winning the English title against over 30 other counties at Brancepeth Castle, County Durham at the end of September. It qualified for that event by winning the Corah Shield earlier this summer.

On the evening of October 12th, we took our collected items along and spent a very informative hour with Tim Jackson, Project Coordinator, learning all about the need for this facility within our local community, and how and why the food bank helps.

In Cyprus they faced clubs representing 24 other countries over three rounds, with the best two scores in each round counting towards the team’s total.

Our pictures show the Beavers sorting and storing their collected items, and chatting with Tim about the help offered.

Jack Merry fared best of the Birstall players, finishing tied 32nd with rounds of 78, 72 and 72 (nine over par), with Steve Sansome (76 72 75 – 10 over par) tied 34th and Scott Wormleighton (77 81 74 – 19 over par) tied 50th.

Our grateful thanks go to Tim for allowing our Colony to become involved, in this small way, in the vital service that he helps to provide, and for helping them to become more caring and aware young people.

Overall winners were the Racing Club de France, ahead of Royal Park I Roveri (Italy) and Hubbelrath Golf Club (Germany).
