Local groups, many made up of children that attend Highcliffe Primary School, will be providing entertainment.

The Great Highcliffe Bake Off, now in its third year, will be hosted and everyone is encouraged to enter and show off their skills. Two age groups, under-sixteens and over-sixteens can submit one entry into each of the categories: one large cake, four identical cupcakes or six identical biscuits. Awards will be given to the winners of each category and there is a prize for best in show in each age group. Visitors to the fair will be able to sample the delights afterwards as the entries are sliced and sold to raise money for the school.

Also featuring on the day will be a car boot sale, a market of homemade crafts, bouncy castle, coffee shop and raffle – with prizes donated by generous businesses across the village.

The event is organised by Highcliffe Parent Teachers Association. Reshma Kukadia, chair of the association says of the event: ‘Our Summer Fair is our main fundraising event of the year and has been fantastically supported by pupils, parents and carers alike. Celebrating 50 years of Highcliffe school is a great opportunity to have fun and raise money for the school at the same time. I’d like to thank the local businesses who have been very generous in donating prizes; we’d welcome any further donations.’

The Summer Fair runs from 1-4pm on Saturday 21st June. Entrance is 50p per adult, free for school children, and can be paid at both Greengate Lane and Elmfield Avenue gates. Matt Cort Challenge Charity Golf Day

Half term fun for all of the family

Rothley Park Golf Club recently held the Matt Cort Challenge Golf Day. Over 100 golfers competed, with the top three players qualifying to enter a Pro-Am team with Matt. Matt, the club’s PGA Assistant Professional, has qualified to play in three PGA European tour events this year including the prestigious BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in May.

FREE fun for the whole family will take place throughout Charnwood this half term. Whether you want to look for clues and try geocaching in Shepshed, enjoy Birstall on two wheels or build a den in the Outwoods, there is something for you.

Ian Agar, Rothley Park Golf Club Men's Captain said: “The day was a great success and over £900 was raised on the day for my Captain’s charity, Parkinson's UK. I am sure the three winners will have a great day's golf with Matt.”

From May 26 to June 1, 2014, Charnwood Borough Council’s Sport and Recreation team will host free family fun in the great outdoors.

Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Active Family week is being held across Leicestershire over this half term and is a great way for adults and children to enjoy the great outdoors together “If you’re looking for a day of activities join us at Halstead Park, Mountsorrel, on Thursday May 29 where there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, a climbing wall and much more, all for free.

“The Council is committed to ensuring residents can access facilities to help them live healthy and active lifestyles and Active Family week activities form part of this.”

Active Family Week features: • Tuesday, May 27 – Geocaching. 10am, meet at Oakley Road Park, Shepshed. Booking required.

Primary School Petition As many residents in Birstall will testify I have been busy getting signatures for a primary school in Hallam Fields, I knocked on hundreds of doors and stood outside Riverside Primary School on a number of occasions getting signatures for a new school.

The Petition has been submitted to Leicestershire County Council I am awaiting a response after their consideration.

Swimming Pool/Leisure Centre Petition Another petition was created by myself on Change.org, with the intention of either reopening Birstall Swimming Pool or building a leisure centre. So far the petition has over 500 signatures. Residents can still sign the petition on Change.org, just search “Simon Sansome, Birstall" or "Charnwood” and the petition will appear.

Waste Bin Installed Local residents contacted me as they were fed up with dog walkers leaving dog waste bags on the side of the road or on the grass verges.

I was told nothing could be done with Hallam Fields as the roads have not been adopted by the Borough or County Council.

This information was incorrect, a number of roads were adopted by Leicestershire and Charnwood council in July 2013. All it took was a conversation and a few emails with Jelsons who sent over the maps of which roads had been adopted.

Following this revelation I visited Hallam Fields with a waste officer and within a few days a dog/waste bin has been installed.

I also have an email from Jelsons saying they do not have issues with grit bins being placed round the development, that’s if we can get the grit bins.

Street Petition A local resident who lives on Loughborough Road was annoyed that there was no bin outside her house. The local resident lives close to the bus stop on Loughborough Road/ Bentley Road Junction. She had concerns that hundreds of school children pass by this way every day. Lots of rubbish from the bus stop was blowing in her garden and her neighbours gardens.

To get a bin installed by the council I started a street petition for the residents on Loughborough, Road, this was well supported and I presented the street petition to Charnwood Borough Council at the full council meeting on the 28th April. I am awaiting a response.

Conservatives on the Gravy Train Charnwood Conservative run council voted to increase Councillor's personal allowance by 1%. This was supported by the Birstall Conservative Councillors.

An independent panel advised that the basic Councillor allowance should rise to £4,820 from £4,772.

The first meeting I attended after being elected was the Full Council Budget meeting.

One of the main subjects at the meeting was the rent increases for Borough Council tenants. I could not see how a Conservative run council can vote to increase rent on residents in local authority accommodation and then vote the following month for a pay increase. This just seems unfair and so I could not vote in favor of this increase.

Conservative Core Strategy Falls Apart As you may know the main Development planning document, the Core Strategy produced by Charnwood Borough Council involved Conservative Councillors at all levels, and included a housing estate on the edge of Birstall. The Tories want to build 1500 homes and have a bypass through Wanlip. 1500 homes is a similar size to the Greengate estate.

This so called "Broadnook Garden Suburb" is proposed for beyond the top of the A46 roundabout, on/near Bentley Roses, and would stretch right back to the railway line, beyond which another large housing development is proposed in Thurcaston.

Retired County Councillor Roger Wilson and myself, vigorously opposed this construction of 1500 homes and the bypass at Wanlip as it would cause chaos in Birstall.

Now a government planning Inspector has rejected this Conservative Core strategy in its current form and given Charnwood nine months to amend it. They are being required to work with other areas of Leicestershire to reach joint agreements on numbers of houses needed and their locations.

I shall argue that the lions share should no longer be dumped on Charnwood residents but spread more evenly around the county.

Will the Conservatives do likewise?

In the report the Government's Inspector stated - “I consider that the Core Strategy is not based upon an up to date and robust assessment of the housing needs of the HMA. It is not clear how such needs will be met and if there will be unmet needs from authorities that will have to be accommodated elsewhere within the HMA.” “As it stands, the Core Strategy has not been positively prepared, it is not justified or effective and it is not consistent with national policy in respect of overall housing provision.

It is therefore not sound.”

This has caused a major issue in Birstall and the Charnwood area. Because the Conservatives did such a poor job on the Core Strategy it is still not currently in place, which means the rules of the National Planning Policy Framework have precedence, and that insists there be a "presumption in favor of development". This has created a free-for-all of planning applications; literally hundreds of houses have already been approved for areas between Birstall and Loughborough, with many more in the pipeline. Villages' areas of separation are seriously at risk.

It was just two weeks ago that almost 1,000 women descended on King Power Stadium in support of LOROS for their Annual Twilight Walk, now the stadium is preparing to host the 29th Annual Ladies Luncheon which will see a further 600 ladies turn out in support of our local Hospice.

LOROS Patron and small screen presenter Julia Bradbury will be this year’s guest speaker at the event and her presence has certainly attracted a great deal of interest with the event selling out just after Christmas and a reserve list now in place.

Julia is perhaps best known for her presenter role on BBC One’s Countryfile alongside Matt Baker where she has interviewed the likes of Prince Charles in a one off special edition of Countryfile, however Julia is happy to roll-up her sleeves to do her bit for charity whenever she can and LOROS were thrilled to welcome

her as their Patron in September 2012.

Rothley Bowling Club The Bowls Club are pleased to announce that following the hard work carried out to the green surrounds over the winter months by several club members and our contractor the green is again open for play. The work to replace the ditch boards and update the surrounds was made possible by Grants received towards the project from the Harry Hames Trust and Midlands Co-operative Society. It seems a long time since we opened our first nursery on the corner of Park Rd and on checking back it is, in fact, 12 years! The time has gone very quickly for us and our team of staff and a lot of the children we first knew as babies are now teenagers.

With this in mind we thought we would take the opportunity to tell you about some of the things that have happened in recent times and how we are moving forward into 2014 and beyond.

Recently, we were very fortunate to appoint our new group manager, Kate Bryan. Kate was previously employed as an Ofsted inspector, Inspection Team Manager and Quality Assurance Manager at Prospects, (who inspect on behalf of Ofsted). Kate, for whom nothing but outstanding is acceptable, brings with her a significant range of experience in judging practice against required standards to ensure that the children are being challenged in order to prepare them well for school. Kate says, “I am delighted to be working with the staff teams at Woodlands & Gables nurseries.

Both settings are forward thinking and committed to providing the children and parents with the very best service. Ofsted are concentrating heavily on how the quality of teaching affects children’s learning and we are all determined to move forward to providing an outstanding experience for our children…and to ensure that they have lots of fun whilst learning.”

Rothley & Mountsorrel Parish Council - Peter Osborne "Sell in May and go away" is an old adage from the money markets. It has in fact more to do with Henly Regatta, Ascot, Wimbledon Tennis and other social attractions. However, this May, there will be many decisions made, some already made by the time you read this, that will have far reaching consequences nationally, and some locally.

Have you got your election card ? Voting takes place for the European Parliament and will give each political party an indication of what might happen in the 2015 local and national elections. It is your chance to influence decisions. There are 2 judgements to come from the courts. The first is the appeal by the Plantagenet group wanting Richard 111 to be buried at York Minster against the decision that he should be reinterred from the former Greyfriars site to the Cathedral. The City and county authorities have spent money on what will become an attraction for visitors. Tourism is an important part of the local economy.

The second judgement will come from a judicial review, asked for by the Police Commissioner, to challenge Blaby District Council and the Lubbesthorpe SUE and which could set a precedent for any other SUE development in the County. That might have serious implications for the Core strategy of Charnwood Borough Council, a strategy already said to be unsound. I have said consistently that the Strategy is unsound and that following the letter of the Inspector, should be withdrawn. The cabinet of Charnwood Council will have to make a decision at their cabinet meeting mid. June if they are to withdraw.

The Inspector has given his judgement on the Davis application on land between Mountsorrel and Rothley and allowed the appeal. What might be setting a trend is his reasoning why he rejected the opinion of the Plans Committee which had said that had they been asked, the application would have been refused. It may set a trend or direction of reasoning when new applications come forward.

May is a busy month with the consultation about the future of Libraries starting. There will be a chance to discuss the options at a meeting in late June, to be held in the village. LaFarge held an information evening at Quorn giving out their plans for their future. I know it was well attended and I hope that many residents went along. The plans will come to the County Council for their Development Committee to make a determination and there is the opportunity for you to have your say. As with voting, please don't waste the chance.

School Holiday Pattern Set to Stay County schools are set to keep the traditional Leicestershire pattern for terms and holidays, following a consultation.

Over 3,000 parents, schools, governing bodies and other groups sent their feedback to Leicestershire County Council after being invited to have a say on different options.

A total of 86 per cent of people said they wanted to keep the status quo. The council's cabinet is expected to agree the term dates for the next four academic years at a meeting on Tuesday, 6th May. Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: "I'm pleased that so many parents and schools have taken the time to send us their feedback.

"We weren't anticipating a huge appetite for change but as the education landscape has changed a lot recently, we wanted to make sure that the term dates are still right for our children and families.

"The overwhelming response is that people want to follow the existing pattern."

A delegation of Lingdale Golf Club members recently played a group of injured service personnel at Lingdale under the Help for Heroes Battleback scheme. This is a military initiative aimed at returning them to a normal active lifestyle and aiding both their physical and psychological rehabilitation. A good time was had by all to such an extent that plans are afoot to make this an annual event

Leicestershire County Council is running a village shop support scheme, to help village shops and Post Offices develop and upgrade their services. It is offering grants of up to £3,000 to improve the range, quality and accessibility of services at the heart of local communities.

On the Water Weekend Draws in the Crowds The Sun Shined, the people came & the On the Water Weekend at Pilling’s Lock Marina was nothing short of a resounding success.

Over the three days we carried over 1,000 boat trippers on our Free Boat Rides, out along the canal outside the Marina & a few hundred yards into the River Soar. This was a feat that would not have been possible without our fleet of 4 Day-Boats and our team of Volunteer Berth Holders who Skippered the majority of the Boat Trips.

I know on the handful of trips I skippered there were passengers who had not been to a Marina before and some had never been on the Rivers or Canals before so it is great to engage with these people and show them how wonderful the waterways are, what facilities are available & who can help them experience it all.

Our Open Boat Viewings attracted lots of interest too with a few tentative enquiries coming in each day and lots of positive feedback. Viewings were also helped by our Volunteer Berth Holders who are the perfect example of who to talk to if you want to own a boat.

It was also interesting that a few people selling boats in the local area saw how busy we were and have subsequently bought their boats here for us to broker the vessels.

The Bands played on Sunday and Monday afternoons and the beer flowed well into the evenings. A Hog was roasted and a barbeque emptied all our fridges!

A huge thank you to all who made the event such a massive success & if you are a Marina that didn’t take part this year shame on you! Get yourself organised for 2015, this is where our future business is coming from.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

The topic for the 14th April accompanied by slides, was very ably given by Josephine Burgess who is a volunteer speaker for “Save the children” The title of the talk for adults, is called “Save the Children Then and Now” and was about the history of how and who founded the Charity and what has been achieved since the founding and the current work being undertaken.

The founder was a well-to-do Edwardian lady named Eglantyne Jebb. She was not particularly enamoured with children but decided to “give life” from a strategic distance by setting up the fund at the end of the First World War. She was driven not by sentimental concern for individual children, but by a passionate humanitarism that many had lost sight of at the end of the War. Her first quest was to seek help from the Archbishop of Canterbury asking him to donate collections on one day close to Christmas, but he declined not wishing to associate himself with a political organisation. Eglantyne then wrote to the Pope, who granted an interview which proved very positive as he then contributed £25,000 of his personal money before promising that the Catholic Churches all round the World would contribute to the Fund. The Church of

England and several other faith groups then came together for an unprecedented international inter-faith collection in support of the Fund; save the Children was then placed firmly on the international map with sister organisations quickly appearing all over the World.

Eglantyne worked tirelessly and one day in 1922, she looked down from the top of Mount Saleve outside Geneva, over the international city and drafted the pioneering statement of children’s human rights that has since evolved into the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – forever changing the way the World regards and treats its children. Sadly, six years later at 52 years old, Eglantyne died.

Her legacy brought the current work into focus throughout the World saving the lives and mental security enabling the chance for children to thrive and prosper. The talk was thoroughly appreciated by the Membership resulting in a marvellous collected donation of £100.00.

Nearly 1000 girls were policing Leicester.

Saturday night, 26th April, saw sisters, mothers, daughters, friends, partners and colleagues unite across the county. They took over not only the King Power Stadium but also the streets of Leicester during the LOROS Hospice Twilight Walk - an annual 10km Sponsored Walk for ladies only.

The circuit was a circular loop which included some of Leicester City hot spots. Walkers enjoyed the mysterious New Walk, illuminated by lanterns, nooks and crannies in the oldest part of the city as well as the pink and violet lights of the modern Curve Theatre building and much more! The walk started from and finished at the King Power Stadium, where the host for the evening was DJ Amy Voce from the GEM106 Breakfast Team.

As part of the celebrations, walkers had the opportunity to play games to win food vouchers to the new bar and grill, The Spur, but also to remember their loved ones by releasing a pink helium-filled balloon with their messages attached. The sky changed colour to pink for a while, making the beginning of the evening very special and emotional.

One of the participants of this year’s LOROS Twilight Walk said: “The balloon release touched me deeply and made me cry as I miss my Nanny who died at LOROS. Being together with such fantastic ladies during this amazing event gave me hope and happiness! I look forward to taking part in the event next year!”

The theme for 2015's Twilight Walk will be Saints and Sinners. This year’s theme “999 Emergency” called for Doctors, Nurses, Firegirls, Policewomen and many more emergency service themed outfits. LOROS Fundraising Team were impressed by the ladies’ creative ideas! We hope to raise over £40,000 from the event, which helps us to provide the vital help to our terminally ill patients and their families. Publication has been made possible by funding from Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Borough Council, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council and the Ramblers Association.

The county council is looking to recruit more local residents to be trained as master composters. It’s a win-win situation for all involved – the master composters can develop their interest in gardening while helping to reduce the amount of organic waste which goes to landfill.

6th White Horse Duck Race Success The duck-tainted dust has finally settled on Birstall's most prolific charity event. The White Horse's annual May Bank Holiday Duck Race delivered substantial charitable profit and marine mayhem in equal measure.

It was day of major successes; the weather mercifully remained clear, the atmosphere sang of enjoyment, and, most importantly, there was plenty of money obtained for the two respective charities.

The majority of prizes have now been collected and all winners have been contacted, with the top 3 ducks being numbers 123, 623 and 61 respectively. The funds are still being collected, but so far the amount raised is a magnificent £1838.84. Helen McNulty, of the Youth Café where the funds raised from the sold ducks were being donated, said that she is "over the moon" with the donation. She added, "the money means I can have two extra youth workers for a year, on a Wednesday". But it is worth noting that the Youth Café chose to share the day with a local fundraising group, raising money to help a young girl called Effie Hadman who has a rare neurodegenerative disorder, 'Batten Disease'. They also received £470.

Central England School for Performing Arts is a fantastic opportunity for young people to try out a challenging and comprehensive programme of workshops including dance, acting, musical theatre and technical theatre.

The school was initially established by a group of theatre professionals with West end experience based at the iconic, stunning setting Hansom Hall in Leicester City centre.

Our reputation has grown immensely due to our ability to get the best out of the young people we work with and our serious commitment to developing young performers.

But Helen's fervent thanks regarding the people of Birstall's generosity didn't end there; she remarked, "Another good thing that's come from us being the main benefactors is that we get our name out there, as so many residents still do not know we exist! We had quite a few asking us for days and times that we open, so now there are a few more young people and families that we can help and support".

We have a passion towards creating a valuable learning experience in a friendly, welcoming environment to either inspire young people to develop their chosen fields or just try something new and make lots of new friends.

And it was to be a day of records; not only were there a record number of prizes donated, but there was also a record number of ducks bought on the day - a staggering 1200. Furthermore, it is worth remembering that the majority of the items bought from the stalls on the day were made by the young people who themselves attend the very same Youth Café that the funds raised have been donated to.

Whether you already have existing skills or you’re eager to try something new and exciting, you will be placed in a group that matches your abilities and with a teacher that can bring out the best in you.

Finally, huge thanks to all those that donated prizes for the Duck Race winners. This year we had a record number of prizes donated, with the final figure at over 40. Bipolar Coffee Helping You to Plan a Great Morning Day Out in Leicester and Leicestershire

A coffee morning is being held to raise funds for Bipolar UK, the national charity supporting individuals and families affected by bipolar, sometimes known as manic depression.

The charity event is on Saturday 21st of June from 10am to midday at Methodist Church Hall, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS. Tea and coffee will be served alongside a number of stalls which will include cakes, plants, nearly new goods and a tombola.

Bipolar is a severe mental health illness characterised by significant mood swings including manic highs and depressive lows. The majority of individuals with bipolar experience alternating episodes of mania and depression.

Between 600,000 and 1.2 million individuals in the UK (1% to 2% of the population) have bipolar. The impact and devastation of bipolar are not about the sufferer alone. Including parents and partners for example, bipolar affects over three million people in the UK today. Bipolar UK provides a range of services to enable people affected by bipolar and associated illnesses to take control of their lives.

The charity’s services include a national network of self help groups, a mentoring scheme supporting individuals in hospitals, psychiatric units and their local communities, a youth service, and a webbased discussion forum.

The Hospital Liaison Dementia Support Service, which launched on Tuesday, April 22, will see three members of staff from the charity working from the hospital in a bid to improve patient experience, reduce time spent in hospital and re-admissions as well as provide valuable information, advice and guidance.

The service is centred around the completion of a specialist document developed by Alzheimer’s Society called This is Me, which details things that are important to the person with dementia like food preferences, interests and hobbies.

Any person then involved in their care will have easy access to the things most pertinent to their happiness and wellbeing.

Jo Rodwell, Alzheimer’s Society dementia support manager in Leicestershire and Rutland said: ““Hospital can be a daunting experience for someone with dementia, who may be experiencing confusion or have trouble communicating.

This service is an exciting opportunity to build on the good work that is already going on at the hospital to ensure that people with the condition get the best possible care. We’ll be working closely with staff and patients and we hope that by providing support and information, people will stay in hospital for shorter periods, improving their quality of life and also saving money for the hospital.”

Having never visited before, Phil’s family describe their first impressions of LOROS as homely, welcoming and friendly. Unfortunately Phil’s condition deteriorated quickly but he spent 10 happy days at LOROS until he died in October 2013.

Established in 1994 we are a small skilled six man team specialising in quality made to measure fitted furniture produced in our own local workshop and installed by our own fitting team.
