RALLY WIN FOR BARROW PAIR In the early part of November, John Dignan and his son Peter piloted their 1966 MGB Roadster to a class victory in The International Rally of Tests. The Barrow upon Soar-based crew also finished in second position overall in this classic car event, which this year was run over several counties in the north of England and the south of Scotland. They also tasted victory as part of a team of three cars, which included a Porsche 356 and a Ford Escort MK1.

The field of seventy five cars represented a who’s who of classic car rallying, with a wonderful selection of eighteen marques from the 1950s and 1960s. Amongst these were Porsches, Volvos, Alfa Romeos, Minis, Fords and MGs. Examples from AustinHealey, Mercedes-Benz, Hillman, Triumph, Jaguar and Lancia were also in attendance.

Famous names taking part included Fred Gallagher (co-driver to Tony Pond and Juha Kankkunen) and Neil Wilson (winner of the RAC Rally with Henri Tolvonen in 1985).

Run over four days, the rally started in Northumberland with an evening prologue of two driving tests and two regularity sections (a section of the rally to be completed in a specified time). This placed the Dignan’s MGB in eleventh position overall for the start of the first full day, which was to be run from Slaley Hall in Northumberland to Dumfries. The Day 1 route had five navigation regularity sections and eight special tests and ran through Kielder Forest, Hawick, Selkirk, Bowhill Estate (near Selkirk), before a tea halt at Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries and Galloway.

The day’s efforts moved John and Peter up to first overall and helped put their three-car team ahead of the pack. An evening time control section on the challenging Dundrennan Military Ranges, near the Solway

Firth, saw them drop to second place before the night stop at Dumfries.

Day 2 comprised six regularities and nine more special tests through the areas of Kershope, Kielder Forest, Hadrian’s Wall, Langley Castle, the Pennines, the North Yorkshire Moors and Tan Hill. During the day, John and Peter again moved up to first overall, only to drop to second after the night time controls on the Catterick Ranges.

After the night halt at Redworth Hall in County Durham, Day 3 included five regularities and nine tests routing through the Pennines via Skipton before crossing into Bowland Forest, the Trough of Bowland and the roads throughout Lancashire. The final tests at Weeton Army Barracks were followed by the finish in Blackpool.

At the Gala dinner and prize giving, John and Peter were awarded some magnificent glass trophies for their class and team victories and also for finishing second overall. This excellent result crowned a very successful year for the Dignans, which included the award for top expert in the Historic Rally Car Register (HRCR) classic road rally championship.

John has owned the MGB since 1968 and has won the MG Car Club speed championship seven times with the car. He is a member of the North Leicester MG Club which meets at the Lingdale Golf Club near Woodhouse Eaves on the third Wednesday of each month. The Charnwood Forest Living Landscape project aims to conserve and enhance the unique wildlife, geology and character of Charnwood Forest. The project is led by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and is supported by Aggregate Industries.

The Trust offers free wildlife surveys to landowners, has a small grant scheme to help with management work and collaborates with others who are concerned with the conservation of this special area.

LOROS Hospice announce plans for a £6 million expansion LOROS Hospice is pleased to announce that it will be significantly developing its facilities next summer after being granted planning permission to extend its building.

The two Phase project will cost an estimated £6 million. Phase 1 will, first and foremost, see the size and quality of the Hospice’s Day Therapy and Outpatients facilities being improved, which will allow more than an additional 250 patients each year to visit on a regular basis and enhance their experience.

Phase 2 will be the building of a state-of-theart Clinical Skills Training Centre, which will ensure that LOROS continues to be a leading voice and positive influence in end of life care and education.

LOROS CEO John Knight said: “Like any progressive organisation LOROS needs to remain responsive to the changing needs of

the community that it was established to serve.

“In particular, it’s great that they are developing their day care because a lot of people tend to think patients go to LOROS just to stay overnight but in fact, the Hospice supports so many people out in the community, as well as those who go in and are supported during the day.

“Under the plans, we will create more space and bespoke facilities for our day therapy and lymphoedema services.

“In our new clinical skills training centre we’ll pass on to health and social care professionals our expertise in end of life care, promoting excellence and improving the experience of patients, their families and carers outside of our Hospice.”

“I’m also happy to hear that the expansion means LOROS will be able to share the good work they do by developing the clinical skills training centre.”

Local residents were consulted prior to the planning application going in, and those that came to view plans and discuss the future developments have been incredibly supportive.

It is anticipated that Phase 1 of the project will take around one year to complete with work starting by early summer.

Phase 2, the new stand-alone Clinical Skills Centre, is estimated to take a further year to complete, making the total project time from now to completion, approximately 2.5 years.

Funding from the project will come from two large historic legacies, the sale of Manor Croft – the previous LOROS day care building, located in the city – and a recent generous donation, as well as funds that have been carefully reserved over time for this very exciting development.

The senior management team at LOROS Hospice said they will be working hard to ensure there is as little disruption as possible to local residents and neighbours.

“I’m very proud of LOROS and I’m also very proud of how much the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland community continue to support the Hospice,” added Mr Soulsby.

Ellie conquers Kilimanjaro and raises thousands for charity A LEICESTERSHIRE teenager has conquered the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in a fund-raising trek that has raised nearly £3,000 for a local charity.

Eighteen-year-old Ellie Allan, from Rothley, undertook the eight-day expedition last month (Oct), in aid of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT).

Ellie – a Loughborough Endowed Schools student – was a childhood friend of Joe Humphries, the Rothley teenager who collapsed and died from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) while out jogging in October 2012.

Since his death, Joe’s friends and family have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of SADS and campaign for a better understanding of sudden, unexpected death in young people.

They set up the Joe Humpries Memorial Trust (JHMT), and have campaigned for compulsory CPR training in schools and defibrillators in schools, community venues and sports clubs.

Ellie said: “I decided to trek Kilimanjaro after my dad said for my 18th birthday present he would take me anywhere in the world. I thought it was something a bit different and worthwhile to do.

“I chose to raise money for the JHMT because I knew Joe well as a child, and because as well as having that personal connection, it’s such a worthwhile charity to raise money for.

“I enjoy hiking as a hobby – in 2014, I did the Three Peaks challenge for the JHMT and I really enjoyed it, so I wanted to take on another challenge.

“The best bit of the trip was definitely reaching the summit. After six days of walking with little energy left, seeing the sign at the summit was overwhelming.

“The night before, we had to set off from the campsite at midnight and walk uphill for eight hours in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees, only stopping every hour for a five-minute break. It was a really good experience, but definitely the hardest thing I've ever done!”

All of the £2,951 Ellie raised will go directly to the JHMT. Steve Humphries, chair of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust and Joe’s dad, said: “This is a fantastic personal achievement for Ellie, and we’re honoured that she chose to dedicate her trip to Joe. “Ellie’s determination and strength of spirit have taken her all the way to the top of Africa’s tallest mountain, and it’s these qualities that have also helped her to raise such a fantastic amount for the Trust.

“This is another example of one of the many inspirational young people from Leicester and Leicestershire who are so committed to helping Joe’s Trust reduce the incidence of such devastating loss of young lives.

“We’ll put the money raised to good use – it will go towards our vital work raising awareness of sudden heart deaths, providing defibrillators and training, and helping to fund young people to reach their goals through our Inspire Awards scheme.”

“Pester power” costing East Midlands families almost £6k a year EAST MIDLANDS parents give in to “pester power” - to the tune of £5,668 a year, according to a new study by Quidco. New research has revealed the extent to which modern parents feel pressure from their children – with almost half (41 percent) admitting they succumb “most of the time” to requests from their children to spend money.

A further two thirds (70 percent) of parents admit they are guilty of spoiling their children - the average parent shelling out £109 per week on spontaneous purchases. And the study showed that 88 percent of kids across the East Midlands pester their parents for treats when out and about.

Of the parents polled - 21 percent admitted to spoiling their children because their own parents were unable to spoil them - while a further 19 percent said bribing helps keep the children’s behaviour in public in check. And 42 percent of parents say their youngsters have embarrassed them by throwing a tantrum in public because they haven’t got their own way.

However keeping up with their offspring’s peers was also a factor in why modern parents over indulge – with 7 percent saying they wanted their children to “maintain the same lifestyle as their friends”.

Vix Leyton for cashback and rewards site Quidco said: “Pester power’ is by no means a new concept, but with the advent of iPads, in-app purchases, and instant downloads of music and games, the cost of it has certainly escalated for parents in the East Midlands.”

The study showed that 73 percent of parents admit their children consider them a “soft touch” with 35 percent of the mums and dads polled saying that disagreements over spending money on the children regularly caused arguments between them. And a further 51 percent of parents said they secretly spend money on the children and don’t tell their partner.

Roy’s professional experience covered 35 years in the wealth management sector, having worked for such industry heavyweights as Barclays and for the past ten years with St. James's Place Wealth Management of which he is now the Senior Partner. He specialises in providing solutions in the areas of Retirement planning, Estate and Inheritance Tax planning and Investment planning. The company was founded in 1991 by Mike Wilson CBE, Sir Mark Weinberg and Lord Rothschild His talk centred on various aspects of the above finance, all of which were aimed to make his current audience think about their financial circumstances in regard to making the most of their savings through Bonds to enhance their investment value and also, protection of the accrued wealth earned through home ownership and Bank Accounts.

Roy explained his advice in a simple and pleasing manner and endeavoured to answer the multitude of questions posed, leaving a certain amount of reassurance and determination to take action to improve the individual’s circumstances in the future. He stressed the point of making a new Will, Securing Joint Bank Accounts and joint Home ownership.

This was the last Meeting for this year, as next month we shall look forward to our Annual Christmas Lunch at the Birstall Golf Club, who have successfully cared for our needs over the past 11 years, together with pleasant seasonal choral entertainment.

Support for Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence DOMESTIC and sexual violence support in Leicestershire is to be provided through a single service which will cover Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR).

The service was launched on Tuesday, 1st December. This service will have one new helpline number – 0808 802 0028. This number is free to call from landlines or mobile phones and will not appear on phone bills.

It will allow people aged 13 years upwards to call for support if they have been a victim of domestic or sexual violence, or if they would like to seek advice or information for themselves, a friend or family member. This helpline does not replace reporting these crimes to the police and in an emergency people should always call 999.

CLASSICAL “GREATS” FROM THE LOUGHBOROUGH ORCHESTRA

For their forthcoming winter concert, the Loughborough Orchestra will be playing music which is high on the classical “Hit List”.

The Elgar Cello Concerto is a highly regarded cornerstone of the cello repertoire and its performance by Will Robertson, pictured here, promises to be a treat for the audience.

Will was one of the talented pupils to attend Chetham’s music school before gaining a place to study at the Royal Academy of Music. The cello that he will be playing is on loan from the Royal Academy and allows his beautiful playing to sing above the orchestra! Will has performed widely in this country and has also travelled as far as Singapore to tour with a Chamber Orchestra. Will is looking forward to playing this famous Concerto with the orchestra.

To introduce the concert will be the melodies of the Karelia Suite by Jean Sibelius. This is a piece which is condensed from “Karelia Music” that Sibelius was commissioned to write. It is based on Finnish folk music and although it was written early in his career, it has a commonality with the nationalistic nature of much of his later compositions. Sibelius became known as Finland’s national composer.

And last, but by no means least, is Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony. This last of the Tchaikovsky symphonies was probably his favourite and is full of lush melodies. There are strident tunes which grab attention and follow on from teasing, enigmatic rhythms passing between instruments. Other enchanting moments are better heard and felt than described!
