Interesting ideas for your conser vatory...

FOR THOSE ALONE IN AND AROUND ANSTEY

With escalating heating costs in the winter and with glass/polycarbonate roofs acting as green houses during the summer, is it time to re evaluate your conservatory in line with modern requirements.

Everyone who attended Christmas day for those alone in Anstey and surrounding villages had a great day, volunteers and guests alike. We catered for 72 people! All guests had a lovely 5 course Christmas dinner, presents and a goody bag stuffed with lots of yummy food.

Charnwood conservatories specialise in the remodelling of existing conservatories. We start by removing the existing roof covering and running in new structural elements to the roof where necessary. proof & breathable membrane to eliminate condensation, and insulate the roof with Kingspan rigid foam between the rafters and Super Tri-Iso multi foil below, to give an over all heat loss compliant with the high levels required by current building regulations. ight

Or perhaps... If you really want to give your conservatory a more timeless quality, house

perfectly.

CHRISTMAS DAY 2014

gives your conservatory a more solid feel and a freshness that only comes with a newly decorated area of your home.

We enjoyed great entertainment from Nigel North on the accordian doing a great sing a long, Sean Dodds did some stand up comedy and great magic tricks both on stage and around the tables, and last but not least we had a few games of bingo! Julie, Matt and I would like to thank all the volunteers who came forward to help both prior to the day and on the day whether that be the initial planning, securing funds, setting up the room, wrapping presents, putting up posters, providing transport, hosting a table, and most definitely a massive thanks to Julie and all her team for organising, buying and cooking such a wonderful meal on the day (something I definitely do not get involved with as cooking is not my strong point!!).

Decorating your home gives personality to your individual tastes and good lighting is essential in this.

A massive thanks also to Next for a very generous donation of £250 and lovely presents for all the ladies, Aurum holdings based near scudamore road for the beautiful jewellery boxes donated for presents for all, Anstey Parish council for their donation of £200, Jacobs bakeries in Wigston for their donation of boxes of biscuits for everyone, Age UK for donations of food, and to other companies who helped in some way, Aldi, Midlands Co-op, Greens surveyors – Anstey.

We can help you to design and install lighting to suit your desires, with the amazing effects that modern LED technology can create, or the concealed

Thanks also to St Marys Church, Anstey who don’t charge anywhere near the the full amount for hiring the room and without the room this couldn’t go ahead so thanks very much for the use of the room once again.

contemporary and beautiful lighting can create the atmosphere you’ve always enjoyed in your most peaceful of rooms.

Thanks to all my colleagues at work who got together through direct donation or donations of money most of the mens present, thanks also to those people, many of who remained anon who donated money, we had various amounts in envelopes through ours or Julies door or given direct to the parish council as our funds are with them (thanks to Liz in the parish council for all her help too). Many guests and helpers also donated money on the day as well.

Thanks for reading and a happy new Year

LOCAL Articles, News & Advertising:

The ladies in Anstey W.I. decided that they couldn't get through the Christmas season without some sort of joint celebration and so organised a night of readings, carols, bell ringers and a short play. The event took place at the Anstey Methodist Church on Friday 19th, December 2014 with the audience consisting of members of W.I.' s not only from Anstey but from Markfield, Astill Lodge and Thurcaston. The United Reform Church choir were there to sing the praises of the season along with the Birstall Handbell Ringers who were so expert at their craft that we were all able to identify the carols which they were ringing.

Sales Manager - Teresa

Ralph Harrup of Anstey accompanied us in our singing of carols and taught us the actions to “Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer”. Every time we sang 'reindeer' we had to put our hands on our heads as if they were antlers and every time the word 'nose' was sung we had to put our hands around our noses.

Of course, we sang the song well but managed to mangle the actions. Three members of Anstey W.I. performed a little play entitled “The Shepherd Who Wasn't There”. What was it about? Well …... two shepherds went to the pub and then Christmas shopping whilst the poor third shepherd had to stay and look after the sheep. Sounds a bit familiar doesn't it. Afterwards there were home made cakes, mince pies and teas. It felt like a proper Christmas celebration and for some members of the audience it was their first such event this season.

POLICEMATTERS

Crime Figures 20th Nov 2014 to 19th Dec 2014

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 20 November and 19 December 2014 inclusive. From analysis of the last few months’ crime figures, there appears to be a ‘trend’ continuing and one just beginning to re-surface. Firstly, we have seen over the last few months a number of motorcycles / mopeds taken from properties around the village. A number of the motorcycles / mopeds have been recovered, often not too far from where they have been taken. Now would be a good time to consider where your motorcycle / moped is stored overnight, and to assess what security measures your vehicle has. Secondly, there has been a small rise in the theft of property (mainly tools) from work vehicles and private vans. Again, take this opportunity to review the security of any work vehicles in particular, and consider what you need to store in them overnight. For vans with rear doors only, the simplest security is to back the van right up to a wall or even better your garage doors; this protects both the van and the garage from entry. Side opening doors to vans can be more difficult, but there are a number of security measures that can be still be added; such as Deadbolts, Slam Locks, Armaplate Lock Covers and Van Boxes / Bulkheads etc. A simple internet search will bring up more information regarding these very useful added security measures. We would ask all residents to report to Police any persons or vehicles seen acting in a suspicious manner around properties where motorcycles / mopeds are on view, or where a van is parked on the drive or close by.

New Year – New Focus You may have noticed that this edition of ‘Your Local’ magazine does not include an article from your Anstey Neighbourhood Watch. Don’t worry, Neighbourhood Watch is still going as strong as ever, but unfortunately due to personal reasons the NHW manager was unable to provide an article this month. However, during our regular meetings, we have come up with just one New Years resolution – that is to achieve 100% Neighbourhood Watch coverage for the village! This isn’t as tough a challenge as it sounds, as we are nearly already there, but we need a new focus in 2015 to achieve this goal. If your road is not covered and you would like a NHW scheme then please contact Diane Tillotson via email at diane@ansteynhw.co.uk and she will be happy to assist you in setting one up. If you live on a road that already has NHW and you would like to join (it’s only a one off fee of £1) then contact Diane and she can direct you to your co-ordinator.

Burglary Dwelling – 3 Forest Gate, Bradgate Road, Charles Drive, Burglary - 5 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) - Stadon Road, Cropston Road, Ashfield Drive Theft of Motor Vehicle – 2 Millfield Close (m/bike), Dalby Road (m/bike) Theft from Motor Vehicle - 3 (inc Attempts) – Papermill Close, Hazlehead Road, Groby Road Damage to Motor Vehicle – 2 Dalby Road, Stadon Road Criminal Damage Dwelling – 1 Church Lane Criminal Damage - 0 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage Etc) – Theft Store – 1 Co-op Theft Cycle – 0 Theft Person - 0

As we head into 2015 the Police in partnership with Anstey NHW would just like you to think about your home security and consider the following that may make your property more attractive to burglars: • A high front boundary

• Low side and rear boundaries

• Wheelie bins accessible

• No security lighting

• Valuables on display

• Open or unsecured windows

• Unsecured garage door

• Unlocked shed

• No visible intruder alarm

• House in darkness when unoccupied On behalf of the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing team and Anstey NHW, we wish you all a very Happy New Year and a safe 2015. We thank all residents for their support and vigilance in 2014. As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. We have upgraded the equipment and replicated as best as possible the current surgery so that patients will have the same experience and level of care. Thurcaston and Apply online for first time Cropston Local school admission places and infant to junior school History Society transfers Parents of children who will be four years old before 1st September 2015 and starting school for the first time or transferring from an infant to junior school need to apply for a place before the 15th January 2015. If parents apply late - even if they live next door to the school - their child is unlikely to get a place at their local school if all available places have been filled. Apply for your child’s place online at www.leics.gov.uk/admissions, it’s easy and secure. For general enquiries about the admissions process please call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684 or email: admissions@leics.gov.uk. Online applicants will receive an email acknowledging receipt and be able to view the decision online on 16th April 2015.

On Tuesday 18th November, our final meeting for 2014 began with a brief A.G.M. during which there was an appeal for one or two more people to join the Committee, which has remained rather undermanned this year and the current four members would really appreciate some extra input. If you feel able to volunteer your services, even for just one year, please contact Peter Smith on 0116 2367365. Unfortunately, the scheduled speaker, Gareth King, was unable to attend, due to him being unwell. Therefore, at short notice, Society member and Archivist, Brenda Hooper, very ably filled the gap with a repeat of the entertaining talk she gave to the Society previously (Oct 2013) about the 19thC Leicester lady, Mary Kirby (1817-1893), who was a distinguished botanist and writer of her day. The meeting concluded with some tasty festive refreshments and an opportunity to view the History Society’s exhibition in All Saints’ Church, remembering and commemorating local people’s contributions and sacrifices made during both World Wars. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 20th January 2015 at 7.30pm in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church. Society member, Sandra Moore, will talk about “Living Memories of Characters in Belgrave Cemetery”. Annual subscriptions will be due (£12p.p.) and the full programme of meetings/ outings for 2015 will be available.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.

Cabinet Statement. I thought it was right to let you know that I have stepped down from my Cabinet Lead Member role at Charnwood Borough Council. I will still be the Councillor for Forest Bradgate Ward and will continue to do all I can for the residents who live within the Ward. There is no change to my duties at the County Council. This is part of my statement I made when stepping down "it is with great regret that I have recently stepped down from my Cabinet lead at Charnwood Borough Council. As Lead Member for Communities I have recently found it difficult to influence or deliver services for the benefit of residents within the Borough, especially decisions taken that, in my view, affect the wellbeing of communities. Therefore I believe it is in the best interests of all concerned that I step aside. I will continue to work hard to improve the services that are delivered to our communities, albeit from the back benches"

Examination in Public of Core Strategy. In March, planning inspector, Kevin Ward suspended the examination of Charnwood's strategy to allow the council extra time to provide more up-to-date evidence of future housing needs across Leicestershire, that information has now been provided. The Core

Strategy outlines the Council's vision of where future development should take place in the Borough. It has to be scrutinised by a planning inspector before being approved or refused. The examination will look at all areas of the Core Strategy, including its proposal about where to site new homes, businesses and travellers' sites in Charnwood. In my view, once this Core Strategy in in place it will be of benefit to our local area, especially helpful in reducing the unwanted piecemeal developments we have recently seen, especially in the Parish of Anstey. The examination will re-continue on January 6th 2015 in the Town Hall and run until January 16th. Members of the public can attend, sessions are being held most days, but check www.localplan.charnwood.gov.uk for full details.

Green Plaque Award Scheme. The Green Plaque awards scheme for Leicestershire was launched in December 2013. The public were invited to nominate people and places they felt were worthy of commemoration through the Leicestershire County Council scheme. During 2014 Green Plaque unveiling events have been held and have been well attended by the local communities including

school children as well as families of those honoured. On Wednesday 10th December 2014 the County Council launched the next round of nominations. Residents will have until Friday 23rd January 2015 to nominate people and places to be commemorated. To nominate on line visit www.leics.gov.uk/greenplaques pick up and drop off a nomination form at any county library, or post your completed form to Green Plaques, Room 500, County Hall, Glenfield, Leicester. LE3 8RA. I would love to have some people or places nominated within my Division.

Leicestershire MP's Briefing on Fair Funding. The Leader and Deputy Leader of the County Council have briefed Leicestershire MP's about the tough decisions they will have to take, unless the Council receives fair funding. During the briefing they showed how the

Don't Muck Around Awards. In my report last month I made reference to the Don't Muck Around Awards that took place on Thursday November 17th. The aim of the awards is to recognise and promote the amazing work that residents have done to improve the Borough's diverse and spectacular environment. It is hoped that this work will inspire others to follow suit and make Charnwood a cleaner, greener and healthier Borough for everyone. I am delighted to report that residents completing work in my Division were winners at the awards ceremony. Joint winners of the Schools and Young Peoples award were Katie, Emma and Imogen for their work with the Woodhouse/Woodhouse Eaves litter picking team and the Junior Allotment Project in which local youngsters with help, built raised beds to plant vegetables and fruit at the Woodhouse Eaves Allotments. A Highly Commended award in the Working Together category was won by the Thurcaston and Cropston Litter Pickers. Volunteers who go out on a regular basis, collecting up litter from roadsides and pathways in and around the two villages. Congratulations to everyone involved in winning these awards.

Council would be £337 million per year better off if the Council received the average level of funding from government. Fairer funding would help to ease a lot of the financial pressures including the rising demand for care services. I will keep you updated on this matter along with the budget details for the next financial year.

Update on Planning Matters. Although the Fairhaven planning application on Cropston Road, Anstey was permitted at a planning meeting on the 17th November, I am still asking questions about how this development will be delivered. This includes how the construction traffic will access the site, my main concern being lorries travelling through The Nook before any of the improvements have taken place, in line with the conditions within the planning decision. I have sent information to the Planning Inspectorate now that the planning application at 237 Bradgate Road, Anstey has gone to appeal. You may recall this is an outline planning application, with all matters reserved, except for access, for demolition of the existing property and for residential development of up to 19 dwellings. This application was refused by a planning committee at Charnwood Borough Council in August 2014.

Proposed Changes to the Library Service.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club We are pleased to present the Programme of Events for 2015 for the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club. The 2014 gardening year has been very good for the Club. We held eight Club nights at the Thurcaston village hall and a summer programme away from the hall that included a visit to the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park and two evening visits to gardens in the National Gardens Scheme in Earl Shilton and Belton. In July we held a Club BBQ evening and it proved to be a hat-trick of successes, thanks to everyone who helped make it a very enjoyable and successful evening. Our Annual Show in September was another success story. It was our second year at the Richard Hill Primary School and once again we had more exhibitors than ever before in both the adult and children’s classes and there were big increases in both the vegetables and the flower and floral art sections. Over the last few years the Club has seen a year on year increase in members, largely due to a strong programme of events. We structure our Programme of Events so that we have something for everyone. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The committee are mindful of keeping the Club affordable. So the fee for the last few years has been £12 for full membership and £3 for visitors - and remains the same for 2015. Fees are on a pro rata basis after the first 3 months. And, if you would like to come as a visitor (to give it a try) and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.

You may recall the County Council consulted on the future of the library service. Following the consultation the Council has agreed to fund 16 main libraries but reduce their opening hours, support communities to run 36 local libraries and provide a 24/7 online library service and a mobile library service.

For more information, please call Dave Haddon on (0116) 235 9758

The County Council is now encouraging groups to come forward to run the 36 community libraries of which Anstey is the one in my Division. I am most grateful to Phil Knight who has arranged meetings and has with others constituted an executive committee to move this forward. I understand Phil would be pleased to hear from any resident who would be interested in being involved as a volunteer. If you are interested in helping or seek further information please contact Phil Knight on 0794 1959045 or e-mail AnsteyLib@virginmedia.com

Happy New Year. If you need to contact me on any issues write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Film Presentations

From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council There was a warmth in December's film, "About Time" where Bill Nighy's character gently showed his son how to say "Goodbye" both to people you love and to the comforting certainties of childhood. They were able to go back along a time-line to correct past mistakes and to relive fond memories but could not make someone love them. All the music complemented the various situations perfectly and the numerous scenes of the picturesque Cornish Coast were memorable. "Belle" will be shown on Friday January 9th 2015 and lasts 104 minutes. This enchanting film is a true story of the illegitimate mixed race daughter of an eighteenth century British Royal Navy Admiral. Dido Belle plays an important role in the campaign to abolish slavery in England. She was Britain's first black aristocrat. It's a must-see British costume drama to begin the new year. “Jimmy's Hall" will be shown on Friday February 13th and lasts 109 minutes. This 1930's historical drama is based on a true story about the causes of Jimmy Gralton's deportation from Ireland. He builds a rural dance hall to meet the needs of young people in County Leitrim, against the wishes of the Church and the local landowners. He determines that all people should be allowed to celebrate and dance as free human beings.

Seasons Greetings from Anstey Parish Council This year the lights for the Christmas lights had come to an end and a new contract has been interested into. The planning of decorations for Christmas starts early in the year and this year the Parish Council decided to reduce Christmas Light budget and provided the tree on the Nook roundabout. We have received some feedback about the decorations but would like to hear your views! If you could spare the time to let us know if you like the decoration and how you would like to see this improved and how much to be spend on them this will help the Councils decisions for next year. There is a change to published meetings for January and an extra Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th January, this meeting will consider the budget for 2015/16. The meeting on the 27th January will have open session from 6.45 to given people the opportunity to come along and talk to current councillors about the role they fulfil and to find out more about the work of the Parish Council. You will be very welcome to stay for the Meeting which will start at 7.30pm. It is with regret that we announce the sudden death of Councillor Mike Roe at home the week before Christmas. Mike served Anstey as a Local Councillor for any years and was committed to achieving value for money for the residents of Anstey.

Liz Hawkes - Clerk to the Council Your councillors are: Martin Broomhead, Nigel Aston, Vicky Ball, Barbara Bradshaw, Ian Grogan, Glyn McAllister, Dave Parker, Roger Peat, Brian Rowlinson, John Sutherington, Deborah Taylor, Sarah Taylor and Chris Tunaley. Your councillors can be contacted through the council offices: Tel: (0116) 236 2646 or email: ansteypc@btconnect.com.

"The Hundred-Foot Journey" will be shown on Friday March 13th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £5 and concessions are £4.50. There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - or calling 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Anstey Preschool 10th birthday

Thurcaston & Cropston Neighbourhood Plan Working Party Consults with Key Stakeholders

Having been an Anstey resident all my life, I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to set up a preschool in Newtown Linford. Ten years on 'Caroline & Claire's Pre-School' is still going from strength to strength and our children go on to primary schools in Anstey, Thurcaston, Markfield, Swithland, Sileby and more! In order to celebrate the 10th birthday of our preschool we are holding a family fun day on Saturday 17th January from 11-3pm in the Newtown Linford Village Hall. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun and it would be great to meet up with staff, parents and children past and present. I look forward to seeing you all then! Caroline Brewster.

The RCC, (Leicestershire & Rutland) on behalf of Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council, invited representatives from local businesses, landowners, community and sports groups, neighbouring parish councils and those that provide infrastructure services to the parish to a stakeholder meeting and workshop on the evening of Monday 1st December 2014. The consultation exercise helped to raise awareness of the Thurcaston & Cropston Neighbourhood Plan among the key stakeholders and to Identify opportunities and constraints related to the future development and delivery of services, facilities and infrastructure within the parish, such as traffic and transport or possible areas for housing, commercial developments or community facilities. The issues that were identified will now be collated into a report and used to Help inform the ongoing consultation and engagement process required to produce the plan. This Stakeholder Consultation followed two earlier public drop-in consultation events held in both Cropston and Thurcaston during September. A number of themed groups will start in the New Year, which will cover 'Heritage and Conservation', 'Open Spaces & Environment', 'Housing', 'Recreation, Facilities & Services', 'Traffic & Transport' and 'Business & Economy'. Anyone wanting to find out more about the Neighbourhood Development Plan or who would like to be a part of the themed groups, please contact the Parish Clerk, Marianne Lane on 0116 2367626

Queen tops combined Christmas Day viewing figures The Queen's broadcast, simulcast on BBC One and ITV, topped the Christmas Day ratings, with overnight figures showing an average of 7.82 million viewers. Mrs Brown's Boys on BBC One, averaging 7.61 million, had the single biggest audience for the second year running. However, overall figures for live TV viewing were sharply down on last year. BBC One had seven of the top 10 most watched programmes while ITV had four - the channels shared the Queen's Christmas Broadcast at 15:00 GMT. Irish-based sitcom Mrs Brown's Boys topped the ratings last year. But it dropped from the 9.4 million viewers it attracted then, while second-placed EastEnders also dipped, to 7.55 million. That allowed the traditional 10-minute message from the Queen to move to the top spot when figures for both BBC and ITV were combined.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Happy New Year everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and got what you asked for, or something that was a pleasant surprise? I don’t know what I shall be getting because I am writing this before the great day. Good health and getting out more would be a great gift for me personally. It has been hard work for me with one thing or another over the last 12 months but I am, according to my Doctors at the LRI, on the mend, providing of course I do as I am told, keep taking the tablets and keeping out of mischief! I must give a special mention and thanks to my Lynda who has stuck by me constantly throughout the dark days, and still is. X

Mike Roe. RIP. A good councillor of Anstey Parish Council for many years and a very nice man of the village. Mike passed away suddenly on Monday December 15th. 2014 aged 77, at his home in the village. A mind mine of information about Anstey, he will be sadly missed by many. Condolences to wife June and Family.

NAT WEST.

societies. Now after March 9th. we won’t have any of these outlets and the population of the village now is approximately 8,000 and growing. Plus of course those people from Newtown Linford, Ulverscroft, Thurcaston, Cropston, and Swithland who come to Anstey to use the local services. They have no outlets at all.

to make things better for you and your family or indeed in a position to be able to donate money or food please get in touch with the project co-ordinator Tim Jackson 07743 765 958. Or email the following:soarvalleycfp@gmail.org

Personally I wonder if Mr Pugh and his grey suited brigade have ever been to Anstey or Syston or just looked at us on Google maps. Perhaps it’s time that these big consortiums were made to give good reasons for wanting to close essential local services such as banks, before being allowed to move things away.

Not the most expansive we’ve ever had but I thought the tree was lovely? Many have said to me we should have had more lights, but Anstey Parish Council decided to save some money for this year at least, hence the reason for the “Lonesome Pine” Christmas tree in the middle of the Nook.

It will be interesting to see, if the bank does close how the Nationwide and Post office manage to cope with the extra workload…

If I may perhaps criticise the local businesses around the Nook area there wasn’t much of a display of Christmas good will from them either...

REMINDERS: Core Strategy. This month at Victoria Room, Loughborough Town Hall Charnwood’s Core Strategy outlook resumes at 9.30am from January 6th. to 16th. All are welcome to attend and see what is planned for the future of Charnwood until 2028.

Rothley Food Bank.

Going West! “Your bank working for you?” Ha! Ha! Firstly HSBC (Anstey) closes, now our nearest branch is on Belgrave Road, Leicester! We are now informed by Mr John Pugh CEO of the National Westminster Bank that as from March 9th 2015. The Anstey branch, long established in the village is set to close; along with the NW bank in Syston. Mr Pugh said it was a difficult decision to make but pointed out that the nearest branch was only in Birstall. (2 bus rides away) or you can do your banking on line? Hmm! Online banking for the large elderly population is not the easiest thing to do? In the days when Anstey had a population of around 2,500 we had Midland & Nat West banks, Leicester & Shepshed building

I visited this local food bank on a Monday lunch time in December, to see how things work. For all those who maybe in a mess and apprehensive in going, please don’t be. The small staff were very friendly and understanding, and made you feel at ease very quickly. The Soar Valley Community Food Project is jointly run by Rothley Parish and the Rothley Baptist Churches and is open to anyone who is basically “in a pickle.” As well as the “free” food parcels, there is also assistance on hand to help with other matters that may be troubling you. The aim is to support people to a better future by helping them in the short term to put food on the table and to help them find a way out of their present crisis. If you require any more information on how

Despite the band NOT turning up and the PA system acting up at the wrong moments, John somehow managed to keep things at least sort of going! Well done JD. And the small band of Royal British Legion volunteers. And Finally. I said in my last column I was hoping Leicester City FC would get a victory before the New Year. I am still hoping at the time of writing. Let’s hope I am not disappointed and Christmas brought a victory or two… Stop Press: Yes Hull 0-1 LCFC. GJ NB:- If you see any strange notices on empty buildings around the villages; there has been one or two just lately? Don’t always believe what they say. Give me a ring and find out for sure, to stop any silly rumours starting… Always at your service, Happy New Year Everyone.

Yours. Cllr. John J. Sutherington.

The Martin High School... multiple exams within a few days.

Christmas Fair Our MHS annual Christmas took take place on Friday 19th December. This was a major school event. All students, especially those in Years 7, 8 and 9 created and sold items on their stalls. Jade’s Retreat and LOROS are the two charities that we raised funds for. Jade’s Retreat is named after Jade, Mrs Ward’s daughter who tragically died of cancer last year. Jade’s last wish was that her family set up a seaside break for families with children who are dying. This small charity has nearly achieved its target. We want many families to enjoy a good holiday at the seaside this summer. LOROS is our local hospice. Some of our students have had family members who have been wonderfully cared for in the beautiful environment of LOROS at the end of their lives. LOROS has no NHS funding and is entirely dependent on our charity. It’s good for our students to realise what power they have in shaping their world by coming together and making such a big event. We want all our students to realise that they can make the world a better place through their actions. We also had our usual Grand Raffle which is the main fund raising event at the Christmas Fair. We asked the whole school community if they could sell 5 raffle tickets each. The main prizes were: An iPad Air • A camera • Jewellery Champagne • Beauty products Gift Vouchers • And lots of other prizes. A huge thank you to all the local businesses who kindly donated prizes for the draw.

Year 11 Mocks In the week commencing 8th December our students took their mock exams. This gave all students a taste of what it is like to undertake

After all their hard work both students and staff can now enjoy their Christmas Break and come back in the New Year ready to take on the next stage of their GCSE’s.

OFSTED Inspection Inspectors visited the school on the 19th and 20th November and found that we are currently mid-conversion. The new school is beginning to emerge with our students focused on learning and their achievement; our dedicated and hard-working staff are determined to successfully drive the conversion forward. Inspectors found the school in the midst of expansion and development. The combination of our popularity and conversion to 11-16 has resulted in our rapid growth. Student numbers have risen from 620 to 911 in fifteen months. The number of staff has almost doubled over the same period. They found us working hard on all fronts with the single purpose to ensure that all our students achieve their potential and enjoy their leaning. The report praises the students who are

This was the ultimate accolade for Lisa and her team who have revolutionised school meals at the MHS. Over the last year the number of students taking dinners has tripled.

We have two concerns with the process and outcome of this inspection. Inspectors inspected the school on the basis of it being a completed 11-16. This meant that they expected a complete set of Key Stage 4 GCSE data. This we could not provide for our Year 11 have they have not yet undertaken their GCSE exams! This became they key factor in determining the outcome and subsequent grade of the inspection.

highlighted for their exemplary behavior, conduct and contribution to the community. It further commends may other aspects of the school and the work within. In some instances inspectors highlight aspects of the school development that we are already developing. In other instances, inspectors have made judgements that are premature, for the school is not fully developed until its first GCSE results.

JANUARY IN THE GARDEN At the nursery we are always please to get Christmas out of the way and start the “proper job”. We took the first delivery of seed potatoes on Wednesday, 17th December and hopefully the rest will be here imminently. Although January is a bit lack lustre gardening-wise there is always plenty to do if the weather permits. Wisterias can be pruned back now, cutting the summer shoots back to 2 to 3 buds. Likewise roses can be pruned, cutting out dead and crossing branches and taking the rest down to a couple of buds. One of my favourite winter plants is Clematis armandii which should be about in full flow by now. They are worth persevering with because once established they are quite rampant and fill a big gap. Cut back old foliage from ornamental grasses, also any remaining herbaceous can be cleared up. Remove dying leaves of Hellebores so that you can see the flowers better. Generally anything past its best can be cleared up, eg pansy flowers etc. Continue to harvest leeks, parsnips, Brussels and other brassicas. As mentioned above seed potatoes and onion sets are coming in so if you are after particular varieties get them bought or ordered. You can start chitting early potatoes in a cool, frost-free place. If you haven’t already done so prune apple and pear trees while they are dormant, stoned fruit (eg plums, cherries and apricots) are best left until summer. Prune soft fruit bushes (blackcurrants, gooseberries and redcurrents). Plant raspberry canes. Have a go at forcing rhubarb by placing an upturned bucket or bin over the emerging shoots. If we do have any snow keep it cleared off greenhouse roofs and avoid walking on the lawn if it is frosted as it damages the grass. Keep the bird feeders stocked up to attract these handy bug eaters. Clean old plant pots ready for the spring. Watch out for rot on any stored fruit, veg and dahlia tubers.

Most importantly, Happy New Year to you all!

FILMREVIEW Taken 3:

Charnwood's Largest Loser is back! Beat the bulge this January with the help of a £10 fitness programme

Just as things are getting back on track with his wife, Lenore, Bryan Mills returns home one day to find her murdered body in his bed. The police believe he is the culprit, and Bryan makes a speedy getaway to buy himself time to find the real murderer.

Charnwood Borough Council’s 10-week Largest Loser programme is back and is once again offering regular weigh-ins and exercise classes for anyone looking for a healthy way to kick start 2015.

As Bryan is pursued by Frank Dotzler, an investigator with the police, he must use his time wisely to hone in on the culprit. With time against him, Bryan’s trademark vigilante justice needs to be precise, quick, and above all, right. Will he manage to catch the murderer before the police catch him? As the third and final instalment in the hugely successful Taken series, Taken 3 shows Liam Neeson at his absolute best. This action thriller will have you at the edge of your seat as Bryan fights against the clock to prove his innocence to the police and find out who really killed his wife.

Birdman

The programme starts on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Rawlins Academy, Quorn, and will be held weekly. Weigh-ins will be from 6.30-7.30pm and exercise classes will run from 7.30-8.30pm. Councillor Jenny Bokor, Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “We are committed to ensuring residents have access to affordable health and fitness advice, and at this time of year we know people are looking for ways to improve their health. “We’re in the fourth year of the programme and have already helped more than 70 residents on their quests to beat the bulge.” The participant who loses the most at the end of the programme will win a spa break for one worth £99 at Burleigh Springs Spa, Loughborough. For further information visit www.charnwood.gov.uk, email active.together@charnwood.gov.uk or call the Sport and Active Recreation team on 01509 632535.

What Did You Think...

Twenty years after turning down his iconic superhero role in “Birdman 4”, Riggan is now on the scrapheap as far as Hollywood is concerned – just another washed up A-lister whose star has faded out. Desperate to be taken seriously, he puts together a Broadway play which sees him take the starring role, but must battle his ego and demons along the way.

You will all have seen the Christmas Tree in the Nook and no doubt have an opinion about it. I think it looks excellent and most people I’ve spoken to agree, but the lack of decorations on the streetlights and elsewhere in the village, has caused a lot of discussion! The Parish Council considers very carefully how to spend its money and the decision to have just a tree was taken based on the rising cost of renting the decorations and the installation. The Christmas tree alone cost the Council £3600, a lot of money. Many councils in Leicestershire have chosen to abandon Christmas lights altogether, Kirkby Muxloe being an example.

Michael Keaton (Batman, Jackie Brown) puts in a show stopping performance as Riggan, in this dark comedy which satirises the US film industry. Keaton is backed up by a strong supporting cast, some of whom are no strangers themselves to the superhero genre. Birdman has already been met with universal acclaim from critics at the Venice, Telluride and New York film festivals, who have praised Keaton’s performance and the film’s fresh narrative and bold script.

I know the lack of decorations was met by mixed reactions, some of you thinking it a good idea, some of you not. The Parish Council would welcome your feedback; we know we can’t please everyone but we can try to please the majority. Would you like us to spend more of your money on Christmas decorations? Less? Or none at all? Go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GM87BLY and complete a very short survey which should only take a couple of minutes. Thank you, Wishing you all a Happy New Year, Councillor Vicky Ball

Popular Programme For Loughborough Orchestra

Volunteers needed for dementia befriending service in Leicester

The Loughborough Orchestra January concert is packed full of sumptuous music! As a starter, comes the stirring Finlandia, which was composed by Sibelius and recognised by his fellow countrymen to express the very heart of Finland. Soon after the piece was composed, the title was changed several times to avoid Russian censorship against repeated performances!

Alzheimer's Society is looking for new volunteers in Leicester to give a few hours each week to meet up with someone with dementia who has similar interests.

The next tasty treat is a performance of Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto no. 1 by East Midlands violinist, Yulia Nortridzh. This concerto contains one of the best known and most lyrical slow movements in the violin repertoire, while the outer movements display the soloist’s sparkling virtuosity Yulia grew up, trained and performed in Russia before moving to Derby and her playing will not disappoint!

Suna Tilley, Befriending Manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland said:

For the second half of the programme, the orchestra will play the ever popular New World Symphony by Anton Dvořák. This is full of hauntingly beautiful themes and dramatic energy, which reflect the music of Native American Indians and African American spirituals. Whatever the inspiration, the music has become one of the most popular of all time and used in films, advertisements, TV and many other promotional uses.

is on Saturday in Trinity Methodist Church Centre, The concert January 24th at 7.30 pm Royland Rd. Loughborough. Tickets are available from members of the orchestra or on the door. For more information, see http://www.loughboroughorchestra.org.uk/

The Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor, Paul Day is holding

“Everyone needs a friend, yet 85 per cent of people with dementia struggle with isolation, loneliness and depression. Alzheimer’s Society’s volunteer Befrienders enable people to do things they love from shopping to visiting the gardening centre. Sometimes it just means stopping by for a cup of tea. Befriending offers the perfect opportunity for volunteers to support people with dementia to continue to feel a part of their community. They provide companionship and are matched with people depending on their personality and common interests.” New volunteers are given training and support before starting their roles.
