Great Dixter comes to Newtown Linford The garden at Great Dixter in East Sussex is one of the most famous gardens in Britain and has an enviable reputation all over the gardening world. Christopher Lloyd began creating the garden in 1954 when he moved into the house and opened his nursery selling unusual plants. As the garden developed it attracted more and more attention and his planting schemes ushered in a new age of garden design. The garden is visited by thousands of people every year and often features in magazine articles and television programmes The name Fergus Garrett is very well-known and revered in the world of gardening and has become as synonymous with Great Dixter as its creator. He was appointed head gardener by Christopher and has the great responsibility for continuing his mentor’s work and developing the garden. Fergus does very few speaking engagements in any year and we are very proud that he has chosen Newtown Linford as one of his venues this year.

He comes to Newtown Linford Gardening Club on Tuesday October 25th and we are inviting non-members to come and join us on this occasion. These celebrity evenings have proved popular over the last three years and this one should be no exception.

School Summer Fair Presented By FOALS

Charity Bike Ride A few months ago I signed myself up for a charity bike ride for Alzheimers. It is approximately 80-90 miles of cycling a day from London to Paris, from 20th July to 24th July.

The ride is by far the furthest I will have ridden and is full of challenges. A 90 mile ride on the first day of a very hilly English leg, before crossing into France for 3 more, equally challenging, days in France. Arriving in Paris on the day of the final stage of the Tour de France, finishing with a circuit of the famous Place de la Concorde. The same route the Tour de France riders will take later in the day.

It will be a very tough challenge, but nothing compared to the challenge faced by the families of those affected by this terrible illness, and knowing that I am doing a little bit to help will keep me going.

Crime Figures 24th April 2016 to 21st May 2016

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 24th April 2016 and 21st May 2016 inclusive.

Burglary Dwelling – 2 Albion Street, Summerfield Drive

The crime figures this month show 2 burglaries, and from each burglary a vehicle was stolen from the driveway. Thankfully, both vehicles were quickly recovered by Police and have been reunited with their owners. However, once again this highlights the importance of ensuring all keys are either well hidden if left down stairs overnight, or better still taken upstairs when you retire for the night. On a positive note, at the time of writing this report, one male is believed to be in custody and possibly linked to one of these burglaries having been arrested from another stolen vehicle taken from another burglary within the Charnwood area.

On a further positive note, the Anstey Beat team were very pleased that some good old fashioned local investigative policing was able to reunite the cycle theft victim shown in this crime breakdown with his cycle in just a couple of days. The cycle which was stolen was actually left at the scene of one of the recorded burglaries just a short distance away, and thanks to local knowledge and ‘knowing our neighbourhood beat’ we were able to ‘join the dots’ and recover the cycle back to a very happy owner. We believe this just goes to show how important neighbourhood policing is, ensuring that we as the local officers are always on the ground in the community and able to spend time dealing with and investigating local matters using our knowledge of the area and its residents.

GARDEN CRIME Don't let green fingered thieves spring clean your shed. With (hopefully!) the frost behind us and nothing but clear sunny days ahead, many of you will be out in the garden doing all those jobs you have tried to put off!

Many people take a great deal of trouble securing their house and the property within it...but what about sheds and garages? With the array of lawnmowers, power tools, garden equipment, bicycles, sports and other valuable equipment kept in them, security measures should certainly be put in place.

Property Gardening tools and garden furniture are not cheap - what's more they are very saleable items for the thief. Don't make it easy for them to be stolen and remember that tools stolen from your shed could be used to burgle your house.

• Postcode or property mark anything in your shed or garage that is of value and might be stolen, for example, lawnmowers, garden furniture, bicycles, sports equipment.

• Take photographs of expensive items - they may be useful to police to identify the goods and return them to you, should you be unfortunate enough to have them stolen.

• Never leave garden tools and equipment outside, even if you are just popping back into the house. It only takes minutes for an opportunist thief to take them.

• Consider fitting a pair of garage door locks that are fitted either vertically or horizontally and can be locked both from the inside and outside of the garage.

Enjoy your garden……… but don’t make it easy for green fingered thieves!

County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate.

Updates Planning and Highways I have objected to the latest planning application on land adjacent to 293 Bradgate Road, Anstey. My main concerns for objecting are because, in my view, this proposal to build two dwellings on this site does not fit with the Charnwood Borough Council’s newly adopted Core Strategy. This application is outside the development area of the village, encroaching into the area of separation between Anstey and Newtown Linford. I also believe it is unsustainable in terms of public transport, due to only having a bus service every two hours during day time, Monday to Saturday, therefore in my opinion the car would be the main mode of transport. I also note this site is outside the recommended distance of walking to the majority of local services.

I have met with a highway officer from County Hall to discuss the continuing issues with parking in the village of Newtown Linford caused by visitors to Bradgate Park. This especially on Bradgate Road, Grey Crescent and Bracken Hill. From this visit I am hopeful some proposals will come forward to improve the current situation.

Green Plaque Awards I made reference to the Leicestershire County Council’s Green Plaque Award Scheme in my report last month giving details of a successful nomination by a local Woodhouse Eaves resident. I can now report that the third round of this popular award scheme is now open for voting. The shortlisting panel met during April to draw up a shortlist of twelve people/places to be put to a public vote. Looking through the list I notice the name of Charles Bennion, benefactor and entrepreneur who gave Bradgate Park to the people of Leicester and Leicestershire.

I would be grateful if you would vote for up to six people or places on the list. The six with the most votes will be awarded a Leicestershire County Council Green Plaque. The deadline for voting is Monday 6th June, you can vote on line at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/vote-foryour-green-plaque-winner.

EU Referendum I am hopeful that all residents within my Division have received the Electoral Commission’s Information Booklet being delivered to households before the referendum on Thursday 23rd June 2016. This booklet contains important information for voters on the referendum itself, how to register to vote and how to cast your vote. The Electoral Commission has also launched its National Voter Registration Campaign to remind people to register to vote by the deadline of Tuesday June 7th.

In my view this referendum is one of the most important decisions in our lifetime, so hopefully, if you do read this report before the 7th June and you are not registered to vote, it is easy and only takes a few minutes to register on line at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

You may vote in three ways, at a polling station in person on the 23 June, by post, or by proxy, which allows somebody you trust to vote on your behalf. Remember you must be registered to vote before you can be given a postal or proxy vote.

Shire Community Climate Change Grant Leicestershire County Council have launched Shire Community Climate Change Grants and these are now available for projects within Leicestershire. Applications are now being accepted and the following are able to apply: Parish Councils: Parish Meetings: local community groups: faith groups and charities: village/community building management committees.

Projects eligible for grant support might include: energy audits of community buildings: installation of energy efficiency measures such as new heating systems: roof or cavity wall insulation or low energy lighting: training courses run for the community relating to energy efficiency/climate change: installation of renewable energy systems.

Chairmen’s Events My term of office as Chairman of Leicestershire County Council came to an end on the 18th May. It has been a real honour and privilege to have been elected as the 41st Chairman of the County. I, with my wife Joan have attended around 300 engagements during the year, meeting many residents within different communities and volunteers who contribute so much to the wellbeing of our County.

I thought you may be interested in two of my final engagements that I attended. I hosted, along with the Lord Lieutenant a civic reception and lighting of a beacon at County Hall to mark HM The Queen’s 90th Birthday on the 21st April 2016. This was a special occasion as the whole country proudly acknowledged Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday and service to this country over her entire lifetime. We joined other Cities and Counties in lighting a

I attended the celebrations at Victoria Park for Leicester City FC on their remarkable achievement in winning the Premier League. What a night to remember, I have never seen so many people of all ages in the City at one time, all in party mode, flags flying, even the sky was totally blue for the occasion!

Being a lifelong supporter I never thought I would see the day when our team would outclass the so called ‘big boys’. I did think back to the conversations over the years with Tom Bloor, who was a Director of the club for many years, I am sure he was looking down with pride, sadly it came too late for him to be part of this brilliant achievement.

Congratulations to everyone involved, in my view, they have certainly helped to give all the smaller clubs a lift, everything is now possible, as the manager said “keep dreaming” European Champions next season!

JUNES NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW Firstly I would like to apologise for not submitting an article for last month’s edition. Unfortunately I was away and didn’t have access to the internet

NHW STREET SIGNS It has come to my attention that a few NHW street signs have been vandalised by persons unknown. Some were attacked during the Leicester City premier league celebrations after the Chelsea v Tottenham game. These signs cost a lot of money and are paid for by the members of those streets. The street signs are to let people know that it is a NHW scheme, but most importantly they are a big deterrent to burglars. Please think before you go cutting them down or damaging them.

Some of these signs have now been replaced.

WARMER WEATHER Hopefully we should be experiencing some warmer soon, and people will be tempted to open their windows. If you leave the room or go out please remember to close them again - it only takes a burglar a minute to enter your property. If you are going away for the summer half term please remember to advise your children NOT to tell ALL their Facebook friends that they are away. You might come home to a very empty house.

These schemes took a while to set up, but unfortunately without a coordinator schemes become dormant. It is often said how welcoming our Gardeners are and they would love you to come and see all their hard work and help them raise money for a great cause.

Gardens will be open from 2pm – 6pm on both days; tickets will be £4 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days.

New Headteacher At the beginning of the Summer Term, Mrs Sarah Sadler became the new headteacher at Woolden Hill Primary School. Mrs Sadler previously worked at Redlands Primary School in Sileby which is part of the same MultiAcademy Trust (Discovery Schools Academy Trust) as Woolden Hill. Mrs Sadler has already settled in well and has worked hard to get to know the pupils, families and community. She has many exciting plans for the future and will be keen to build links, share information and support the local community further. Each class has their own topic that they are learning about: from ‘Raiders and Traders’ in Year Four; to ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ in Year One. This term, we have visited Bradgate House in Year 3, been to Twycross Zoo in Year 1 and Year 6 will be off to London to explore the National Gallery in their Gallery Rebels topic next month.

Our new building!

Over the Summer Term, our building has seen a dramatic internal transformation through a £150,000 building work project to turn the school from an open classroom design to seven classrooms with walls and doors. All classes now have their own spaces where learning can come alive through an environment that helps to immerse children in their creative topic based activities. The children have really enjoyed seeing the building change and they have been incredibly responsible whilst the workmen have been on site. We will be having an open day for the community during September where you can come and see the changes for yourselves. At the end of each academic year, we like to celebrate the achievements and progress of all of our pupils and recognise the hard work and commitment of our staff and parents. Our Academy Awards night will take place in July. This night aims to recognise exceptional achievements in a range of areas. Each school has nominees in a variety of categories and the winners are announced on the night. This year, we have been short-listed for the ‘Wicked Writer’ award; ‘Mathemagician Award’; ‘Artist of the Year’ award and ‘Most supportive parent award. Nicky Morgan will be at the awards night to share our successes and to present the awards. We wish all of our nominees the best of luck!

We are fortunate to have a fantastic Woolden Hill Parent Association and this year they have worked tirelessly to support the school, raise funds and provide great experiences for our children. One of their most recent successes has been bidding for additional funding for our brand new library. £4,800 of books will be purchased to help ensure that our children have a rich and varied stock to choose from. Over the summer, new furniture and decoration will complete the revamp of our library. This will be celebrated in a ‘bedtime stories’ evening in September where parents and children will be invited in to read stories in an evening of literature.

Anstey WI Mays meeting of the Anstey WI was a busy one.

There were the resolutions to discuss and vote on and three competitions to be judged. The two resolutions were on food waste prevention and the provision of facilities for the carers of patients with dementia in hospital. These were professionally presented by Ann Coney and Sheila Timms and these were accepted by the ladies of Anstey WI unanimously to go forward for the final voting in the Annual Meeting in June.

This was followed by the judging of the three competitions. The entries were all of a high standard which reflects the talents of the Anstey members. First place for the cooking section of cheese straws was judged by Wendy Layton and Marion Driver and was won by Chris Figgins. The craft competition was a butterfly in any medium and the skills of participants made it very difficult to judge. It was won by Jill Taras who created a peg bag (see photo) Finally, the arrangement without flowers in a milk jug was won jointly by Sheila Timms and Heather Savage. Well done ladies.

The next meeting is on 8th June at &.30pm at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey and is about the swinging sixties. There is a competition so if you are interested bring in a photo of yourself in the sixties.

This should be an amusing competition.

The WI is all about inspiring women. It’s a rich source of experiences, knowledge and skills passed down through generations and updated every day. The Anstey WI meet every 2nd Wednesday in the month and there are numerous social events throughout the year. If you are interested, then come along and you will be warmly welcomed or telephone 0116 2359605 for further details.

The Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers are planning a display highlighting the work carried out by the Y-Listeners at Beaumanor Hall during World War II. The display is planned for February/March 2017 in the Public Library in Granby Street, Loughborough.

Beaumanor Hall was requisitioned by the War Office in 1940 and set up as a "Y" Station. The "Y" (wireless) Stations were British Signals Intelligence collection sites established during World War II. The Y-Listeners collected traffic (signals) that was then passed on for processing, to the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park.

Secrecy was once of the utmost importance but nowadays the true history of the important role of the Listeners and the code breakers is coming to light. It has been calculated that their work shortened the War by some two years. We are interested in hearing of personal experiences, anecdotes and memories that anyone associated with the YListening Service would be willing to share.

Annual Report Purpose of the Report 1.

To give details of the achievements of the Parish Council over the last 12 months and to set out the Council’s priorities for 2016/17. APC is made up of 14 members and has four Committees to help carry out the work of the Parish Council.

Overview 2.

Over the past 12 months, the Parish Council and its staff have continued to be very active in maintaining high standards and developing its community assets within the village.

The main assets of the Council are: The Jubilee Hall, which continues to be very well used by village organisations; (and the income continues to cover the loan interest repayments).

The Stadon Road Recreation Ground, which includes the 2 equipped play areas, the multi-use games area and the War Memorial.

The top green on Bradgate Road.

The lower green by the brook on Leicester Road, including the Packhorse Bridge (a scheduled ancient monument and listed building).

The cemetery on Groby Road.

Mitchells Field on Cropston Road, which is currently being developed to create 2 junior football pitches.

Link Road Playing Fields, which includes the rugby pitch.

The Scout Hut which is leased to the local Scout Group.

The public toilets in The Nook car park.

The Public Open Space at Long Close, including the play area.

Mill Field Playing Field and play area.

The parish council also maintains St Mary’s Church Yard, which is a ‘closed’ churchyard.

On behalf of Leicestershire County Council the Parish Council maintain the grass verges within the village boundary.

I should also mention that the Parish Council continues to provide Christmas lights in the centre of the village.

The main focus during the past 12 months has been to ensure that all of these assets are kept in good repair for the benefit of the residents of Anstey.

Main Achievements in 2015/16 6.

There have been a number of notable achievements over the past 12 months:

Following the elections In May four new Councillors have joined the Council which has offered a new younger dynamic to the Council.

The Council is very proud to have achieved Quality Gold Status under the new Local Council Award Scheme, Anstey Parish Council was only the 8th Council in the Country to achieve this and is currently the only Council in Leicestershire to hold this prestigious award.

A total of 37 planning applications have been considered in public meetings with significant housing applications along the Cropston Road. The Parish Council has worked hard in collating information to make planning comments on these applications.

Working in Partnership with the Nomads and Swifts Football Clubs work has started on Mitchells Field to create two new football pitches a car park and further recreational facilities for the village.

The public open space and new play area at Long Close which has been funded by the Wilson Homes development is now the responsibility of the Parish Council.

Support for fund raising and charitable events including the Anstey Summer and Winter Galas, Clean for the Queen weekend in March. Councillor Chris Tunaley attended the Palace of Westminster to represent APC for their contribution to the ‘Clean for the Queen Event’

Providing grants to support such groups as the Anstey Youth Café, Anstey Town Charity, Anstey Community Library, Christmas Day Lunch, The Royal British Legion, Anstey Players and the 40th Leicestershire Scouts Group

Working together with Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council on areas of work that fall under their jurisdiction. For example: highways, street lighting and planning. In particular with the proposed changes to the Nook which is linked to the new housing developments along the Cropston Road.

The Council has taken on an extra member of the grounds team to maintain the increased land acquired by the Parish Council, along with acquiring a ‘ride on’ mower to help with the work.

Hanging baskets are being organised for the village to enhance the locality, these will be provided by the parish council and sponsored by local businesses.

The Parish Council is proud to announce that it is now a Living Wage Employer.

The Clerk had the honour or representing APC at a Buckingham Palace garden party attended by the Queen in May 2015.

Priorities for 2016/17 7.

As stated above, the Parish Council continues to develop its existing assets and to acquire further assets that it considers will be beneficial to the village.

The priorities for the Parish Council are considered at their Annual Parish Council Meeting in May.

The Council currently have the following as their priorities: To continue to work with the Anstey Nomads, Anstey Swifts, Charnwood Borough Council and the County FA to try to develop Mitchells Field for wider community use.

To work with Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council to ensure that the community assets to be provided by the developers of the Groby Road housing development are fully implemented.

To work with the Davidsons Homes on the arrangements for the transfer of assets to the Parish Council including additional public open space, an extension to the cemetery and a new allotment site To work in partnership with Martin High School to ensure that the School has the ability to continue the education of local children to a high standard, with access to recreational facilities that could be also used by the Community.

The Community Engage Strategy ensures that Anstey Parish Council continues to support local groups to create a sustainable community within Anstey.

To provide additional outdoor recreational facilities for the people of Anstey.

To consider the long term plans for the Scout hut on Leicester Road

However, it should be noted that, in addition to the above, the day-to-day workload of the Parish Clerk and her staff is equally important and however much we aspire to achieve the proposals outlined above, we often find that we have to wait on the actions of other organisations before we can move forward.

Residents will also realise that the possible development of other assets in the village will have to be considered to be secondary priorities.

Financial Information 12. For 2016/17 the Parish Council has increased the precept by 3%. In their considerations the Parish Council recognise that Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council are considering financial cuts and the Parish Council needs to be in a position to support local services. The growing population increases the need for more money to support it. There will be an increase in public open spaces that the Parish Council are responsible for and budgets are in place to maintain them. The new allotment site on Groby Road will need financial input to get it up and running. To achieve the budget requirements for 2016/2017 a total of ÂŁ30,000.00 will be taken from the Councils reserves.

13. A commuted sum of £230,000.00 has been received by the Parish Council for the maintenance of the public open space at Long Close. This money is ‘ring fenced’ for the purpose of looking after this land. It has been necessary to purchase extra grounds maintenance equipment and employ and extra member of the grounds team to manage this land.

14. A sum of £5000.00 has been received from Wilsons Homes to provide public art which is associated with the development at Long Close.

The full unaudited Statements of Accounts for 2015/16 can be viewed during the Audit process for the Council and copies of these are made available at the Parish Meeting.

I make no apologies to anyone who heard me singing Nessun Dorma “full out” along with Andrea Bocelli, whilst driving along Cropston Road. Anstey, before the kick-off.

Stunning moment.

Who has won more premier league titles since 1992 ? Manchester United have won 13 titles under Sir Alex Ferguson while Chelsea have bought their success with 4 league titles followed by Arsenal’s 3 and recently, oil rich Manchester City who have grabbed two premier league titles.

Arsenal - 3. Manchester City - 2. Blackburn Rovers - 1. And NOW Leicester City - 1 title.

The ending to this fairy tale season would of course be for Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy to score the winning goal in the forthcoming European Championships FINAL. I may have gone too far this time but who knows…

POSITIONS AT CHARNWOOD B.C. I have retained my positions on the licencing committee for the next council year, and also remain on the Overview Scrutiny Committee.

OSC looks at recommendations brought forward by officers before they go to Cabinet.

I shall also be keeping my place, for the 17 year on the Charnwood Sports and Recreation Association, (CSARA) Executive

Committee. This was once Charnwood Sports Council. This committee basically gives grants to local sporting organisations within Charnwood with up to £1,500 for equipment/ improvements, and Coaching/ Talent grants to individuals, up to £250. I will also be carrying on as a committee member of the Leicestershire & Rutland playing Fields Association, another grant giving organisation. Get in touch. You or your organisation may qualify.

It’s worth a try and I will gladly support any eligible application.

CSARA. GRANTS Recently I have been able to support a grant for Cropston Cricket Club, to enable them to purchase a new score box at their Waterfield Road ground. Coaching grants to David Jones and Dave York from Anstey, for Cropston CC. A facility grant to Newtown Linford CC. and Ben Rouse £100 from our “GO GOLD” pot. Ben from Cropston is a very talented 15 year old 1500m runner, although he has also competed at 800m. 3000m. and X country. He is a member of the Charnwood Athletics Club.

LOROS @ the Nomads. Abandoned for now…

Sorry but due to extensive renovation work at the Club, the next charity do at the Cropston Road ground will NOT be on Friday 3rd June, as planned.

The usual crew of Micky “Vinyl-man” Wilkes, Big Blues Mama, Brian, Linda and myself, do apologise for this late inconvenience but I am afraid it was beyond our control.

Leicester’s own Jersey Budd was coming along to plug his NEW EP. This was recorded locally in Anstey and features, amongst others the legendary guitarist Rick Willson. It would have been a bit of a world exclusive!!! Maybe next time.

Should the remedial work be completed on time then the next “Scheduled” vinyl/live night-out at the Nomads will be on Friday August 5th. Whether Jersey will be there who knows, I believe he as some major tour dates coming up with Leicester band Kasabian, but he may be able to nip down and see us at some point soon.

MARTIN COURT- Refurb?

This sheltered housing accommodation at the end of Latimer Street, Anstey as a number of empty properties as well as needing improvements. After much lobbying of officers at CBC I can report that in the near future a review of what is needed here will get underway, to see what improvements are needed, after which a project document will be formulated.

NEW COMMISSIONER? No it’s not in Gotham City or anything to do with batman. But after the May 5th election and the retirement of Sir Peter Loader, a new person was elected to become the 2nd.

Police Commissioner for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The 4 candidates were; Lord Willy Bach (Lab). Neil Bannister (Con.) Cllr. Sarah Hill (Lib.Dem) and Cllr. David Sprason (UKIP). Only 20.25% of those able to vote did do. This was an improvement on the 2012 election, when only 16.3% could be bothered. The system used wasn’t the “First” past the post, but the supplementary vote.

This is when voters are asked to choose a 1st and a 2nd preference on the ballot form.

First preferences are then counted, and if one candidate receives more than 50% of those votes cast, then he or she will be elected. If nobody achieves this amount (No one did this time) then the third and fourth place candidates are both eliminated. Then the ballot papers showing a first preference for the eliminated candidates will be checked for their second preferences.

Second preference votes will then be added to the remaining candidates’ first preferences. After this procedure whoever as the most WINS! (I think.)

The winner and a big surprise at that was Labour’s Lord Willy Bach who secured a massive overall majority of 19,883. This I am informed came mainly from voters living in the City of Leicester, where Lord Bach secured over 30,000 more votes than his Tory rival Neil Bannister, who came second, followed by the Lib Dems and lastly UKIP. Lord Willy Bach (Lab) is our new Police Commissioner. I am sure we all wish him well in his new role. Hopefully he will soon be making a visit to our neck of the woods in Charnwood?

Picnic in the Park Anstey Parish Council is hosting a Picnic in the Park event to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday. The event will take place on Sunday 12th June from 12pm until 4pm on the recreation ground beside Jubilee Hall. There will be a bouncy castle, bar, ice cream van and entertainment. All you need to bring is your picnic and the family dressed in red, white and blue! Let us hope for a lovely summer afternoon to celebrate this memorable occasion.

P/15/0963/2 - Change of use of land to form public open space, Land at Cropston Road, Anstey.

The above planning applications were heard at Charnwood Borough Council Plans Committee on Thursday 28th April. I spoke at the meeting against both these applications as I felt it was an unsuitable area for development for several reasons including traffic issues, privacy of neighbours and flooding issues. I felt it should be retained as employment land to provide employment for Anstey residents. Cllr McAllister also spoke at the meeting on behalf of Anstey Parish Council and I thank him for his time and effort.

Members decided to go with Planning Officers recommendation to grant approval for both these applications. The developers now have a period of time to start development and discharge various conditions attached to the approval. This will include a signaled crossing near to the development to provide a safe crossing route for the new residents.

Loughborough’s Family Fun Day Charnwood Arts will be holding their annual Loughborough's family fun day in Queen’s Park on Saturday 25th June from 12pm to 5pm. This year the picnic forms a central part of Loughborough's Big Birthday, celebrating many Loughborough birthdays in an event lasting the whole weekend of 25th and 26th June. Not only are Charnwood Arts 40 years old this year, but Loughborough's twinning links with Epinal celebrate their 60th birthday and Schwabisch-Hall their 50th Birthday. John Storer House also becomes 50 in 2016 and this year marks the University reaching its halfcentury as Britain's first Technical University.

Anstey Post Office You may have noticed that Anstey Post Office closed for just over a week towards the end of May. Unfortunately, I received the information too late to include in my report last month.

Anstey Post Office was closed to carry out refurbishment and re-opened on Thursday 26th May at 1pm. There are now revised opening hours as follows: Monday – Saturday 6.30am – 10pm and Sunday 6.30am – 9.30pm.

Customers will now benefit from a newly modernised Post Office ensuring quicker and more efficient service in a more informal environment.

Resident’s Surgery I held my last residents surgery on Saturday 7th May. It was again a busy morning. I hope to hold another surgery towards the end of the summer. Thank-you to Cllr Snartt for his support and I am hoping Edward Argar MP will be able to join us next time.

Charnwood Community Heroes Day Residents are being asked to recognise people who go that extra mile to help their community. Charnwood Borough Council is asking people to nominate a Community Hero who they feel makes a real difference to the lives of local people. This could be anything from mowing the lawn for a neighbour to running a youth club. If you know someone who gives their time and goes out of their way to help others then please nominate them.

Nominations can be made via the Council website and the deadline for entries is 15th July 2016. Anyone who lives or works in Charnwood can nominate a Community Hero or be nominated themselves. People who receive nominations will be invited to receive their certificate of appreciation at a ceremony at Community Heroes Day on 31st July 2016 in Market Street, Loughborough.

Syrian Refugees Charnwood Borough Council is preparing to help house and support up to 50 Syrian refugees over the next five years.

District councils in Leicestershire and Rutland County Council are working together to find suitable homes for refugees who will arrive under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme.

Charnwood, Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire and Rutland councils have all agreed to take part in the relocation scheme and will help almost 250 refugees over the next five years.

Some refugees will arrive in late summer, Charnwood is co-ordinating the securing of properties and an officer will be appointed soon. The Council will use private sector housing.

The refugees will be coming from designated camps close to the Syrian border or areas around those camps. They will not be coming from Calais or anywhere else.

EU Referendum The referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union will take place on Thursday 23rd June 2016. Charnwood Borough Council is urging residents to look out for the Electoral Commission’s information booklet that is being delivered to every household across the UK in the next few weeks. The booklet contains important information regarding voting on the referendum, how to register to vote and how to cast your vote.

The Electoral Commission has also launched its national voter registration campaign to remind people to register by the deadline of Tuesday June 7. It is easy to register and only takes a few minutes online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Graham Oppenheimer is committed to music education and enabling young people to have access to the masterclass programme for young string quartets, as well as inspiring young people through visits to schools to enable pupils to hear high quality musical performances.

musical expertise with the young musicians here at the Martin High School and pupils doing GCSE Music. They outlined with performances, something of the musical heritage of the String Quartet. This was a

Consequently, being able to understand how the String quartet works

as a genre is an important milestone in the journey to writing

a composition for a string quartet.

The Music curriculum at the Martin High School is enriched by opportunities to explore music and the culture from which it is derived.

Already during this year, pupils in year 7 have had the chance to explore Chinese music, the Chinese New Year and how Chinese music is performed in a module, on the curriculum, which they study. This term pupils in year 8 are exploring Indian Classical Music, alongside an understanding of its place within Indian Culture. To ensure that these cultural perspectives are fully grasped, pupils have benefitted from hearing professional musicians from India and China, perform on authentic instruments from these places within the world. Whilst these visiting musicians from India and China, explain the broader context of the music, through interactive workshops, pupils are given the chance to play some of these authentic instruments. This helps them to appreciate the sound world of these different musical traditions, but also to respect the people who come from these parts of the world.

Nevertheless, on May 9th 2016, the award winning Van Kuijk Quartet, founded in Paris in 2012, visited the Martin High School, as part of a new classical music project for Leicester, organised by the concert series director, Graham Oppenheimer. The series director, Graham Oppenheimer is a professional violist, who has seized the opportunity to stage an outstanding series of International String Quartets outside London, at the beautifully proportioned Victorian Gallery in the New Walk Museum in Leicester.

Report from Anstey Parish Council Gaddesby 7 – Annual Meeting The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council was held on the 17th May 2016. Councillor Martin Broomhead was elected as Chairman and Councillor Deborah Taylor as Vice-Chairman for 2016 / 2017. The Council policies and procedures were reviewed and a total of four committee’s appointed to carry out the business of the Council for the year. The Annual report for the Council was approved and will be circulated to residents throughout Anstey. This document contains the schedule of meeting for 2016 / 2017.

Vacancy The Parish Council are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and reliable person to carry out the duties of Deputy Clerk for the Parish Council. This part time role is for 16 hours per week Monday – Thursday afternoons 1 – 5pm. Additional hours and pay for attendance at all meetings of the Council, these usually take place on a Tuesday evening. The starting salary is LC1 point 14 (£16,231 pro rata). A complete success!

After months and months of planning, the inaugural race of Team Anstey took place on Sunday 22nd May. The sun was shining; the supporters were out in force, including lots of residents of Gaddesby. The runners struggled through the heat and by all accounts thoroughly enjoyed the course.

As a team, we are so very proud of all the work that has gone into making this race happen, and the marshals on the day were amazing, it’s always a great help at any race to hear a loud cheer and words of encouragement as you’re getting round.

We would also like to thank the sponsors that got involved in the event, Lowe Electrical, Sturgess of Leicester, Nicholls Colton Group. It was great to have some local companies showing their support and getting involved in the event.

We think our race is a great addition to the Leicester Road Running League, so hopefully it will all happen again, this time next year.

JUNE IN THE GARDEN

Hopefully now that we are in June the weather is better and we can begin to enjoy the garden for more hours, barbeque anyone?

The threat of frosts should have passed so it is safe to plant out summer bedding and to put hanging baskets up. Water the bedding before planting and then again after planting, and keep moist. If you have newly planted shrubs and trees then keep an eye on them and water if necessary.

Sweet peas should be beginning to flower, to encourage more blooms cut the flowers as they appear. Stake tall or floppy herbaceous perennials. Keep the new shoots of climbing plants tied into their supports.

There should be a bit of early veg about, potatoes, strawberries and salad crops etc. Continue to side shoot tomatoes. Sow some late runner beans to harvest in September.

If you have a greenhouse keep it well ventilated and shaded. There is shading fabric available as well as a white wash to put on the glass. Check plants daily and water as necessary. Keep humidity levels up to help combat Red Spider Mite.

If you have a new lawn or newly laid turf keep it moist. If we have a prolonged dry spell raise the blade on the mower to reduce stress on the grass.

At the time of writing we do not know what the weather has in store for us this year it may be worth giving a thought to water conservation. Water butts are relatively inexpensive and the water collected is perfectly adequate for watering the garden. Also, as I mentioned last month, consider an irrigation system for worry free holidays. They are easy to install and save a lot of work.

Hopefully June will be warm and sunny and we can enjoy the fruits of our labour.

Newtown Linford Choral Society Songs on Screen

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society In May the Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society heard an illustrated talk by Peter Tyldesley, Director, Bradgate Park Trust: “Colourful characters of Bradgate Park: 600 million years of history in one evening”.

Peter Tyldesley pointed out that most of us know Bradgate Park for, among other things, Lady Jane Grey, Old John Tower, deer and ice cream, but fossil evidence shows its history began some 560 million years ago in a warm sea in the southern hemisphere. The oldest rocks in the park contain traces of pre-Cambrian fossils of the creatures which lived in that sea.

The earliest peoples arrived across a land bridge from Europe about 12,500 BC as the ice retreated. They were hunter-gatherers following herds of deer and wild horses. In 2001 the first scatterings of flints they used were found in the Park. In 2014 archaeologists from the University of Leicester surveyed the site and more than 400 flint tools and spears were recovered.

Your favourite music from film and TV Tickets are now available for the Choral Society’s Summer Concert to be held in Newtown Linford Village Hall on Thursday 9, Friday 10 and Saturday 11 June. Our theme this year is music from films and TV shows. You can therefore expect to hear us perform songs from films such as Toy Story, Sister Act and the Bond films, from TV shows including Dad’s Army and Morecambe and Wise – and even some featured in commercials! The concert will be compered by the ever amusing Len Matthews.

An excellent two course supper will be included on the Friday and Saturday nights, when there will be a 7.15 pm start.

On Thursday night ‘nibbles’ will be provided, and there will be an 8 pm start.

There will be a licensed bar on all three nights.

The Grey family’s association with the Park lasted from 1445 until 1920, and from early times was connected with royalty. Elizabeth Woodville, who became the wife of Edward IV, was first married to Sir John Grey, Baron Grey of Groby (killed in the Wars of the Roses). Elizabeth was mother of Edward V, and her daughter Elizabeth of York was wife of Henry VII. Elizabeth was, therefore, grandmother of Henry VIII, and great-grandmother of Edward VI, and Queens Mary and Elizabeth I. Elizabeth Woodville’s eldest son Thomas Grey survived the Wars of the Roses and was created Marquess of Dorset. He reclaimed the Grey family fortunes, and started building a new great house in his deer park at Bradgate shortly before his death in1501. His son (also Thomas) continued the construction, building in the newly fashionable material brick, the clay for which was dug from pits on the estate.

Lady Jane Grey was born in 1537, daughter of the 3rd Marquess of Dorset, Henry Grey. The Greys had early hopes of marrying Jane to the king Edward VI. They were a protestant family, with some claims to the throne, through Jane’s mother Frances. When Edward VI realized he was dying, he named Jane as his successor, to prevent his Catholic half-sister Mary ascending the throne. Mary, however, gathered supporters and marched on London bringing Jane’s nine day reign to an end. Jane was executed in 1554.

During the 16th and 17th centuries the family’s fortunes ebbed and flowed with various colourful characters. Bradgate House was abandoned in 1739 after advantageous marriages and acquisition of new lands and titles meant that the family moved to Enville and Dunham Massey.

In 1928 Charles Bennion, a footwear manufacturer, bought the Park and gave it, to be managed as a trust, for the people of Leicestershire. The Bradgate Park Trust established to do this still manages the Park today. Swithland Wood has since been added to the Trust, and both are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The Park has never been deep ploughed which means many archaeological signs remain undisturbed. The University of Leicester School of Archaeology is currently undertaking a five-year programme of summer fieldschools from 2015-19. They will be holding a public open day on Saturday 3rd July.

QUEEN’S 90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY SAT 23RD APRIL What a wonderful party we had to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. We invited everyone in the village of Anstey, 90 plus or ‘nearly there’. Forty five people arrived either under their own steam, supported by their walking frame, mobility scooter or by car. Some were collected from home and delivered back by our band of helpers. Over twenty volunteers from St Mary’s and Anstey helped to set up, give lifts, cut cake and serve tea.

We were told that the cup of tea tasted so much better in the vintage china cups. Our talented organist started the singing with the national anthem. Old favourites such as, ‘There’ll always be an England, Run rabbit run, You are my sunshine and many more old favourites were much enjoyed. Anna celebrated her 89th birthday on this day and we all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to her. Four o‘clock was time for tea. What a wonderful spread we had; sandwiches of all types, small cakes, scones, chocolate cake, meringues, Victoria sponge with fresh cream and my favourite coffee and walnut. In addition we had a truly amazing, special cake made by a local resident of Anstey. The donation from the Diocese Growth Fund enabled us to have a really special afternoon tea party with presents to take home. People were so full up, many took their piece of special birthday cake home with them. We had presents to give all our guests when they went home. We had a copy of the book, ‘The Servant Queen’ to give away and also a posy of fresh flowers arranged by our helpers. People expressed their gratitude. Many members of St. Mary’s church came along to help and show ‘their love in action’. We hope to plan many more social events for our ‘senior friends’. As our guests arrived I made sure we had contact details so that we will be able to invite them to other events.

Since the event we have had so many ‘thank you’s’ which makes it all so worthwhile. One said, “ We had a lovely afternoon singing all the wartime songs and what a lovely tea. So much effort was put into it and everyone helping went the extra mile even giving us a book and flowers when we left.

Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club Growing Fuchsias for Pleasure The Club welcomed Jayne Daykin, Vice President of the Nottinghamshire Fuchsia Society to our May meeting. Jayne has been a fuchsia enthusiast from an early age and a member of Nott’s Society for over 20 years, she covered subjects such as growing fuchsias in the garden, propagation and fuchsias in hanging baskets and for showing, giving us a practical demonstration of each section along the way.

To be really accurate a detailed log from previous years is necessary but as a general rule the suggestion is wisely made to allow 60 days for singles, 70 for semi-doubles and 80 for doubles. That’s why you need to start early in the season to create a real show-stopper. Top variety on the show bench in 2015 was F. ‘Shelford’, other popular varieties were ‘Southgate’, ‘Cecile’, ‘Hawkshead’ with its mass of small white flowers and one of the oldest and still one of the best ‘Lye’s Unique’.

Hardy varieties, plants that are permanently planted in the garden, will survive outdoors for many years, particularly if they are planted deep and given a mulch for root protection in the autumn, cut them down by half in November and down to ground level in March or April, by mid-summer they will back to their best and full of flowers.

Fuchsias in hanging baskets and troughs perform best when only fuchsias are used in the display, they require damp rather than wet conditions to realise their full potential and this cannot easily be achieved in a

mixed display.

Cuttings are best taken in March after the plants winter recess. Repot established plants, lightly trim and water, then as the branches break take the young shoots for cuttings.

Cuttings can also be taken when ‘stopping’ the branches later in the season, that’s pinching out the leading shots and laterals to encourage a bushier habit. When taking cuttings if you are leaving the first pair of true leaves on, cut them back by half this will conserve energy and restrict moisture loss by reducing plant area. It’s also best to use only the very tip - ¾” / 1” - this is where all the energy is located and the cuttings immediate reaction is to send out roots to keep alive. To allow the young roots to develop quickly make sure the compost is well aeriated by adding plenty of perlite or vermiculite. Water in with a few drops but after that be very sparing until you can see obvious signs of

growth, remember: damp not wet. If growing a single cutting per pot or cell don’t go straight to your final pot size when potting on, build up to it by using slightly larger pots 2 or 3 times as this encourages a stronger root formation.

Growing for showing is a more ‘hands-on’ art and your show plant needs to be a good shape, glowing with healthy leaves and with an abundance of flowers, achieved by
