Calling all Bakers - The White Horse Bake Off needs you!

Are you famed for your tarte tatin? Do you know the trick to making a mean flan? Or do you just enjoy a bit of a bake? If the answer to any of these questions is 'yes', then please enter this year's Great Birstall Bake Off. The brainchild of Rebecca Kay and based around the concept of the hit BBC TV series, last year the event raised over £600 for Macmillan Cancer Support and served up some seriously sumptuous delights in the process. Rebecca Kay went on to say that she was "thrilled with the response to the Bake off last year" and it was "great fun". As with all competitions and especially those with a charitable emphasis, the more entries received means more money raised. So whether you're a complete novice or consider yourself to be the next Mary Berry - get baking!

And there is a category to suit all tastes and palates, young or old; Cupcakes, Cake, Bread, Sweet Bake, Savoury Bake, Biscuit, Best Decorated and Best Junior Entry will all feature.

Mountsorrel Townswomens Guild A visit to Springfields in Lincolnshire is the summer outing for Guild members and friends, I am sure we shall have a lovely day!

After such a good summer we are looking forward to an exciting Autumn programme, starting with Robert Gregory talking about “Characters of Leicester” on the 4th September.

On the Saturday the 6th September we are holding a Coffee Morning at the Mountsorrel Library from 10.30 to 12.30 selling cakes, books bric a brac and a raffle. Do come along.

Our October meeting finds us engrossed in Julie Edge’s presentation on “Queen Eleanor of Castille” with a Spanish night later in the month.

If any of the above items appeal to you, do come along and join us.

We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays in the month at the Parish Rooms, Leicester Road, Mountsorrel at 7.30p.m. you will be most welcome.

But if sweets aren't your thing - fear not! The organisers are trying to encourage more entries into the 'Savoury Bake' category. Pizzas, pasties, quiches, sausage rolls and bread are all potential entries into this category, although the list does not end there by any means and more exotic ideas are encouraged. Mr. Allen from Allen's Family Bakers has offered to provide yeast to those who might like to bake some bread.

The Bake Off will be judged on Saturday 27th September by a judging panel including some of last year’s winners; Mr and Mrs Allen from Allen’s family Bakers, Maxilyn Geary from the Birstall WI and Rob Mackay (Chef at the White Horse, Birstall). They will follow WI guidelines for appearance, texture and flavour.

All entries will then be sold off the following day at the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which raises funds to support people with cancer. The coffee morning will start at 11am on Sunday 28th September at the White Horse, Birstall. Charlotte Foy of the White Horse added “What better way to support a cause, please drop in and enjoy a piece of cake – or two!”

The winners will be announced at the coffee morning and each will receive a prize and a rosette. Applications can be obtained from Allen’s Family Bakers, the White Horse and in various places where you see the poster, as well as from the White Horse website.

Application closing date is Wednesday 24th September.

The Mark Group Midland Open is the biggest professional tournament held in Leicestershire each year, and again attracted all the Midlands’ top professionals, including former Ryder Cup players Paul Broadhurst and Peter Baker.

Cort and Reed were among nine Leicestershire professionals competing, and while they ended up contesting the finale, for a long time it seemed as though Joe Smoothy (Forest in Arden, Warwickshire) might take the top prize.

THE ATHLETIC GROUNDS LOUGHBOROUGH Opened in 1862, it claims to be the first sporting arena in Leicestershire, long before Grace Road, Filbert Street and Welford Road. Initially it was used for Athletics, Cycling and Cricket only latterly for Football before its closure in 1908. So the rapid growth in the popularity of   association football around the country  spread to Loughborough.      "Beacon",   So great was the enthusiasm for the game that it prompted the local     correspondent for the Loughborough Advertiser to write, on March 2nd 1882:  "What a fashionable game football has  become during the last few years,   and    as it boys, young men and women indulge in the pastime.

However fashionable   game  many is and maybe, it will never out rival the national of cricket, though   wise persons say to the contrary"        Loughborough Town Football Club was formed in 1886 and in1895 were elected    to the second division of the football league only to be disbanded in 1900.     Their most notable  victory being a home win against Arsenal 8-0.

The ground     continued to be used

ENDANGERED SPECIES! Hedgehog Street

Although the hedgehog is amongst our most treasured wild neighbours it has sadly been declining for decades at a rate to rival the endangered tiger, at least in the UK (it is listed as Least Concern by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature).

Clearly something is going wrong. As the hedgehog was added to the national Biodiversity Action Plan in 2007 and the Hedgehog Street campaign commenced in 2011, with a national survey being amongst its numerous targets, action is being taken but it does need support from people all over the UK. Sadly we do not even see many hedgehogs on the roads either. This can be down to a number of factors but apart from intensive farming removing hedgerows and new developments taking place it is also thought that people’s garden practices may play a part – hedgehogs need a large area for foraging and finding a mate but because of fenced in gardens they cannot travel and become trapped. This will also limit their opportunity for finding food, especially with the trend over the last few years of paving gardens over and erecting decking instead of having natural planting.

How you can make a difference: • Talk to your neighbour to create a small hole under the fence or wall of around 5” square (13cm) • Create an untidy area in a corner of your garden and provide shelter with a sideways turned large plant pot or a custom built hedgehog house covered in branches and leaves • Encourage hedgehogs into your garden with bowls of fresh clean water and a little dried cat food • Do not use slug pellets which can kill hedgehogs – instead let the hedgehog do the work for you as they are the best predator of slugs You can pledge a Hole by visiting the Hedgehog Street website and place this on the national map. There are currently around 30,000 hedgehog champions nationally – let’s get more.

Bowls 25 Year Celebration This season is a very significant one for St Margaret's Co-operative Bowls Club, who have now been at their Birstall Road ground for 25 years. This major milestone was marked with a celebratory match last month against a team from Bowls Leicestershire led by their President Deepak Tanna, followed by a meal in the clubhouse.

The County President addressed the meeting, speaking of the huge achievement of the club members. The founding members originally played for the Corah club on their Thurcaston Road ground. Corah was a Leicester hosiery company, in its hey-day one of the largest in the country. In 1990 Corah decided to sell their land which had already been reduced by the development of Red Hill Circle and the inner ring road.

The members rallied together and moved the whole of the bowling green complex to a new site on the Co-operative Sports Ground in Birstall. The Club was named St. Margaret’s Co-operative Bowls Club - St Margaret's being the original name of the Corah club.

Only two of the original members are still with the club. One of them, Johnny Wesson, told the story. "Imagine it. Four inches of turf, 38 yards square, all removed by hand and brought over here. All the paving surrounds together with the old pavilion. We were novices doing a professionals' job. It was a colossal effort. The green was laid by eye and is now reckoned to be one of the finest in the county. My life has been dedicated to bowls since 1977 and this is one of the proudest achievements."

Johnny went on."Since then, the members have continued to work hard and instead of operating out of a portacabin we have a fabulous club house and function area with full kitchen and bar facilities. I am still amazed at what we have achieved."

The club welcomes new bowlers of all standards. The club house can be hired for events and will comfortably accommodate up to 80 people. Full details can be found on their web site www.smcbc.com.

Coping with cancer support at Ulverscroft Manor The Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation will be welcoming ‘Coping with Cancer’ to Support Thursdays at Ulverscroft Manor. THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

On 11th August Mr Derek Holloway, who had previously visited the Club twice with extremely diverse talks, on this occasion spoke on a personal level about the Earthquake which took place in Christchurch New Zealand, on Tuesday 22nd February 2011, when he and his wife were on holiday with their extended family. He named his talk “The Day the Earth Moved for Jane and Derek” a title which produced much laughter. However, the subject was far from amusing.

The Christchurch Earthquake was a powerful natural event which severely damaged New Zealand’s second largest City killing 185 people in one of the nation’s deadliest peacetime disasters.

The quake (6.3 magnitude) followed an earlier one (7.1 magnitude) which had occurred on the 4th September 2010. New Zealand is situated on the notorious 40,000km long “Ring of Fire” around the Pacific basin where 90% of all earthquakes occur with 81% being major.

New Zealand is therefore known as “the shaky islands” and Christchurch, at the epicentre of the ‘quake, is still experiencing aftershocks today.

A baby daughter was cared for by the Grandparents, whose house had been shaken several times by earthquakes and after-shocks. Derek graphically recounted his and his wife’s personal and harrowing experiences witnessing first-hand the terrible earthquake which occurred at 12.51pm.

Derek said that in the aftermath 185 people had lost their lives and many families were separated for long periods. Most buildings had been destroyed including Canterbury Cathedral, all churches and 80% of the business district. All infrastructure had gone.

Food had to be airlifted in, 10,000 houses were beyond repair, 20,000 Portaloos had to be installed and the famous Rugby Union matches relocated. All in all, the ‘quake proved to be the 3rd costliest ever. The city’s mayor, Robert Parker, fronted media coverage and “held people together” and was knighted for his services in this year’s New Year’s Honours List. On a lighter note, Derek then followed on with happier photographs of his family holiday in New Zealand.

They had spent a pleasant morning punting on the river Avon and were about to enjoy lunch in a Restaurant, when the earthquake struck and they became trapped and they had to escape the falling building. Jane had become trapped in the “Ladies” for a short time. Their cousins helped them to get out and to shelter in the Park as the Cathedral

Derek then reported on the progress made by the time of his return to New Zealand some 3 years later 2013/14 and said that Christchurch was by then ”on the road to recovery”. Canterbury Cathedral had been temporarily rebuilt using cardboard and the original bells returned for repair to Taylors’ Bell Foundry in Loughborough. The city centre

had been totally demolished and the land cleared to await final planning decisions on redevelopment. In the meantime, Christchurch was still a city of shipping containers housing businesses, offices etc., but the famous heritage trams had started to run again, albeit in restricted areas and work had commenced on the first priority “infrastructure” with the re-laying of underground water supply pipes and sewers.

Poignantly a temporary memorial of 185 white chairs (including one baby chair) had been installed to represent the people who had lost their lives. Derek said that for him the life threatening experience of surviving the earthquake had been “life changing”. He and Jane had attended a thanksgiving service at which the New Zealand National Anthem had been sung in Maori and English and which he said he had found particularly moving. The brave people of Christchurch have to live with constant worry about “the next one” and he and Jane wished good luck to them all, a sentiment shared by all members of the Monday Club present at the meeting.

Members were then able to peruse Derek’s selection of memorabilia (newspapers and photographs etc).bringing closure to a fascinating talk, Our next Meeting will be our customary Harvest Festival on 8th September. Charity searches for new recruits in Leicester The number of people with dementia is due to rise in Leicestershire and Rutland over next decade.

People in and around Leicester are being urged to help Alzheimer’s Society to support people living with dementia. The charity is looking for volunteers for its Side by Side Befriending Service. Volunteers would need to give up to four hours a week to support people in the early stages of dementia.

There are already thought to be 12000 people with the condition in Leicestershire and Rutland. By 2021, that number is likely to reach 16000.

Suna Tilley from Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland says: “The Side by Side service provides stimulation for people with dementia, which could be mental or physical. It may be companionship, such as sitting and having a cup of tea or it could be helping and joining them in an activity or hobby. The service is important because it reduces people’s feelings of isolation.“

Well it's that time of year again when we start signing up teams for our annual charity Golf Day for Alex’s Wish.

Quick update on charity progress Firstly, Alex continues to do really well, he’s incredibly active and doing exceptionally well, although we are starting to see subtle changes in his physical ability… but for now we are keeping him healthy with daily physiotherapy, night splints, a whole range of anti-oxidants and of course not forgetting daily doses steroids… but unless new

treatments come along this abilities will continue to decline.

We have invested in several clinical trials and progress is being made on many fronts… there is still much work to do and working with the Duchenne Alliance we really are making a huge difference. All the money we raise help fund vital new treatments and we have now taken the ultimate ‘Race against time’ challenge to help fight for this generation of boys… for the first time ever the science is looking hopeful.

Since we launched our charity at the 2012 golf day that September, we have raised £120k and we continue our fundraising efforts with many events planned in the up and coming months.

We need your help with an exciting event that will help raise awareness of different aspects of Hospice care, whilst also providing an opportunity to display the work of local artists.

National ‘Hospice Care week’ is being held from October 6th to 12th and is an annual awareness-raising week to help raise the profile of hospice care across the UK. LOROS, the Hospice for Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland is looking to participate by opening certain areas of the Hospice to invited guests and members of the general public on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th October.

As an added attraction we are planning on holding an art exhibition as part of this event.

We would like to ask if local artists or members of art societies would like to donate any paintings, works of art, prints, photographs or sculptures either on a part or total donation basis.
