Kirby Muxloe Parish Council YOUR VILLAGE NEEDS YOU!

Elections for the Parish Council will take place on May 7th 2015. Apart from an election for one vacancy in 2014, Kirby Muxloe has not had an elected Council for in excess of 26 years. Not enough people have put themselves forward for an election to take place, and hence those who did apply were unopposed and therefore automatically became councillors. We are now asking residents to give serious consideration to putting themselves forward for election in May. If only 14 or less people apply, these will automatically become councillors without recourse to an election. As councillors, we firmly believe that the village will be best served by the democratic process of having elected councillors rather than appointed or co-opted members. This can only happen if sufficient residents put themselves forward for election. So what qualities are needed in a councillor and what does being a councillor involve? If you are interested, the following website will give you full information: http://www.cpalc.org.uk/becoming-a-parish-councillor. In brief, the Council needs a range of skills in order to undertake its functions effectively. An interest in and some experience of finance, personnel, estate management and legal matters are likely to be particularly helpful, but perhaps most importantly it requires people who have a genuine and enthusiastic interest in promoting the interests and development of Kirby Muxloe as a community in which people are proud to live. You would be required to give a time commitment to attending meetings and committee membership, and to being fully prepared to participate actively in those meetings by undertaking the necessary reading and training. By nature of the commitment, councillors tend to be drawn from retired members of the community, but it would be good to have some younger members who have an active stake in improving amenities. Note that Parish Councils are not party political in nature. The common factor is in promoting the interests of Kirby Muxloe as being a good place to live. In next month's edition of The Local, we will explain how to apply and the processes involved, but in the meantime we would urge you to give serious consideration to standing for election.
