Christmas will soon be with us, and this means that once again St. Winefrides Church will be holding there annual Christmas Fayre at St. Winefrides School, Britannia Street Shepshed. It will take place on December 3rd between 10am and 2pm. Once again you will be able to buy Christmas cakes and puddings, pickled onions and chutney, jams and marmalade. There will be books, dvds and bric a brac to purchase, and games to play.

Shepshed Lions News Article by Lynn Jackson
After the success of the Shepshed Carnival, things have quietened down a bit for the Lions. We did however donate £329 to the Belton under 7’s football team Beltonvilla JFC to pay for the kit to play their home matches. We heard about the Shepshed Dolphin swimming group needing repairs to their hoist that is used for their sessions on Saturdays at the Iveshead school pool. We managed to get a cheque to them for £500 to cover the cost of the repairs within the week. We also gathered a working party together to help an elderly person with their garden problems by clearing the area. Plans are ongoing for this years Santa Sleigh tour and also for places where Santa can be met in person, so we shall be looking for volunteers to help him with his door to door collection during the two weeks or so. We are always happy to answer any queries about joining us or joining the FOSSL’S (Friends of Shepshed Lions) again email Lynn Jackson or speak to any Lion you may meet during our activities. TCS London Marathon 2022 Update Article by Guru Singh
We both completed the TCS London Marathon 2022 in times better than expected. My time was 5hr50 and Val's time was 6hr24. Overall it was an amazing experience. Despite the forecast of rain it turned out to be a beautiful and sunny day with mild temperatures and a very light breeze perfect running conditions. The crowds were astonishing and the support all along the route exhilarating. There was live music and many bands from bag pipes, Caribbean drums, bhangra drummers to Morris dancers. Little children were high-fiving and giving out jelly babies. Many runners supported each other and some dressed in fancy costumes added to the occasion. All along the route various charities had their "cheer points and they were cheering the loudest. It was like running through a wall of sound 26.2 miles long. We would like to thank all those who sponsored Val and me and donated to Brain Research UK to help with cutting edge research into dementia, Alzheimer's, brain injuries and tumours, Parkinson's disease and many other degenerative neurological conditions like Huntington's. Currently the total raised is £5163.20 and we appreciate all those who contributed so generously. Moving on we both intend to keep running and stay fit for as long as we can.

Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Since I’ve been posting in ‘Your Local’ the written word has been two or three weeks behind, but this month is very current. The reason as you are reading this I will be taking part in a Country wide fundraiser for Pancreatic Cancer in the form of a series of walks. I have dedicated all the walks to a lovely human being who lost her battle with cancer, Lesley Ball. If you want to walk with me and my very good friend Mike Thomas go to my Facebook group page and type in the search engine; Al’s Electronic Shepshed Experience to find out where we are walking. All the walks will be on Wednesday mornings through the month of November kicking off around 9am, for the various locations see my Facebook page. Glennis Wilcox will be walking also every day her target as with our will be around 20 miles. We both have a donate page which you can take part in, but do walk with us if you can. We all know of someone who has suffered from cancer and how it has affected all our lives. It changes our lives totally, forever, they are never the same. Many do recover from this terrible disease and many do not and its the change and the pain we see loved ones go through. Some recover and many do not, scientists are working flat out to find a cure and I believe that will happen. In the mean time we can collectively work together and put up funds for this to happen. I have been moved to tears from the stories that people have been telling of their loss, young and elderly. If you cannot give then come and walk with Glennis or myself, lets walk and talk. Four Local Women Writers Launch Anthology Of Poems Celebrating The East Midlands Article by Liz Nash
We are a registered charity which is part of John Storer Charnwood, based in the heart of Shepshed at 9a Charnwood Road, the office is open 9am to 12noon each weekday morning.
"Where We Live" is a collection of over 50 poems that is the work of four local writers who live in the East Midlands. The poems reflect the area's history, traditions and people and focus on villages of the Trent and Soar valleys as well as Charnwood Forest landmarks such as Beacon Hill and Bradgate Park.
We provide community transport, befriending and gardening services, to residents who are registered with us. Shepshed Open Gardens and Shepshed Scaresheep Festival events are also organised by us, raising funds for us to continue our work in the community. In 2023 we will be celebrating our 40th year of serving the Shepshed Community.
The East Midlands is so often dismissed as an area of fabrication and industry, but this book highlights the fact that both manufacture and leisure can be sources of beauty and the writers pay tribute to the East Midland's identity.
Volunteers give their time, by driving, gardening and befriending, this can be as little as one or two hours a week, if you are a good listener and like meeting new people why not try befriending? If you enjoy gardening why not join our band of gardening volunteers? In her introduction to the book, local author and poet Deborah Tyler-Bennett says, "The idea of being 'local' to an area makes writers ask how to depict what they know and see in a way that makes the reader both 'know' and 'see' this too." Angela Reddaway, who lives in South Nottinghamshire says, "Leicestershire has played a significant role in my adult life, so I am naturally drawn to its history and landscape," and this is echoed by Liz Nash, "I live in a country lane on the edge of Charnwood and it's so inspiring here I like to turn to pen and paper to capture a scene or a memory." Helen Sadler moved to Barrow Upon Soar from the Kent coast nearly 30 years ago and, like Angela, loves the history and landscape. "I still miss the sea, but I'm passionate about the canals in this area," whilst Jill Simpson decided to explore her village of Markfield as if she was a tourist. "It helped me look at buildings and scenery as if I was seeing them for the first time" she says. The tickets for the Wicked Fireworks event are selling well and hopefully it will be a sell-out like last year. Now that the HVA have set up a WhatsApp group for volunteers, there has been a good increase in the number of people offering to help out. Let’s hope for decent weather! We are coming into the planting season and there will be opportunities for volunteers to get involved in the planting of trees in the new Hathern Woodland. It will be organised and executed by professional contractors, but volunteers have a role. The Parish Council, Hathern Community Group and Hathern Widlife will have details on their Facebook pages. The roundabout is due to be completed by November 28th!! It has been a pain for residents and others for a long time, but traffic flow should improve after completion. At least until the new houses are occupied in numbers. This will be the only access and egress for some time. I attended a stakeholders’ meeting with Persimmon and the issue of what to do with Pear Tree Lane came up. The council planners are telling Persimmon to tarmac the lane. Most councillors and residents were not in favour of this and pointed out that this is a lane (first clue is in the name somewhere) and should not be tarmacked. If you feel strongly about this, make your view known by contacting the relevant parties. There was concern that there would be problems with the car park for the Fireworks event. There is good news in that Persimmon told us that access and egress will be open. Having said that, I would encourage village residents to walk there. The library is going to get a good chunk of money from the new development under s.106. It is going to be spent on the extension. We had a volunteers’ meeting recently to discuss various aspects of where we want the library to be. You are going to be consulted in due course and given about three options for how the extra space in the library could be utilised. We have recovered from the pandemic and the visitor and book issue numbers are back to pre-Covid levels. It was a big blow to see what we had built up blown away by lockdown, but it is great to see the recovery. Every time I see a child run into the building and straight to the shelves, I am happy to be part of the wonderful group of volunteers who have kept this facility alive in the village and gratified to see that it is still possible to bring up kids who love books and don’t spend every waking moment glued to screens. These parents are really getting it right. Hathern Club is being run by volunteers at the moment following Marie’s departure – (the capacity for volunteering in the village seems to be endless and the HVA have added this to their already huge contribution to events). This is good for profits but is hard to maintain. Decisions will have to be made at some point whether to employ bar staff. Until then, if you can spare a few hours, please come forward. These local heroes could do with some support. The Club is thriving now after the refurbishment and the range of musical events has improved considerably. The quiz nights (every first Thursday at the Dew Drop and every third Thursday at the Club from 8 pm) are expanding and are lot of fun. Hathern Senior Band will be playing at the Armistice Service • Sunday 13 November, 10:00a.m. in Hathern Church. The Band now has an amazing 45 children learning instruments for free. Along with the library and the brilliant Youth Club this is a major contribution to the enhancement of children’s lives. A while ago Hathern Parish Council gave the Hathern Wildlife Group three adjacent allotments as a wildlife area. These are in the Shepshed Road allotment site. The allotments contained a number of fruit trees but were full of rubbish which took a lot of clearing and it's now a managed wildlife area. It has given the volunteers (yes, volunteers again!!) the opportunity to have a "tree nursery". They get offers of free trees and had nowhere to immediately plant them. They can now accept trees and hold them till they have a location prepared. They will also be raising meadow plants to add to the village meadow areas. They have just installed a substantial wildlife pond. We are getting more rain now, but the reservoirs are far from full yet. Please avoid wasting water. Flu is making a comeback and Covid is on the rise again – over 2 millions cases again as I write. Please get your booster if you are over 50 or vulnerable and your flu jab. Keep safe.

I can’t quite believe it’s November already, and at this time of year my mind always turns to the theme of remembrance, as we prepare to commemorate Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. At this time of year, we take a moment to reflect and remember the sacrifices of those who have come before us. As with every year, I will be laying a wreath in both Hathern and Shepshed on behalf of all those locally who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. It is also at this time of year that we start to see Royal British Legion poppy sellers. The Royal British Legion are very active in the Loughborough area and I would like to extend my thanks to them for all their hard work raising money for a very important cause, and to other organisations such as Help for Heroes who I met recently in Westminster. Next month is of course December, and I shall once again be taking part in the annual Small Business Saturday events taking place locally. This kicks off a series of festive events which really show our area at its best. Details of my Small Business Saturday activities will be published on my website at www.janehunt.uk, and as with last year I will be encouraging residents to shop locally and to take advantage of the wonderful small businesses on our doorstep. I am always amazed by the range of different businesses that are based here – from award-winning bookshops to companies who provide plant and machinery to construction sites throughout the UK. All sorts of businesses can be found here, and as a Member of Parliament I will do everything to support them. Christmas also brings with it the various Christmas tree festivals that take place locally. Last year I took part in the Christmas tree festivals in both Shepshed and Hathern, and this year I will be doing the same. The festival at Shepshed will be returning to St. Botolph's Church, the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic. As usual, it is organised by the Rotary Club of Shepshed and will be held between 25th and 27th November. Hathern’s festival will be held between 9th and 11th December at St Peter & St Paul Church. I am looking forward to both. As I look forward to 2023, I will be continuing to fight for the residents of Loughborough on various issues, such as reform of business rates which I am keen to lobby for. I am also looking forward to seeing some exciting projects being delivered next year. 2023 will also be a landmark year as we crown a new king. I am sure there will be many celebration events in our area, and I am looking forward to taking part. The celebration of the Platinum Jubilee earlier this year and the outpouring of emotion for Her Late Majesty showed just how much the Royal Family are admired locally. Charnwood Local Plan hearing resumes The sessions was paused earlier this year by independent planning inspectors who have been appointed by the Government to examine the plan. They put the hearing on hold to allow more time for consideration of information relating to Leicester’s unmet housing and employment need. Leicester does not have enough land for the new homes and employment it needs in future years. Councils in Leicestershire have agreed to work together to share this unmet need. The hearings commenced on October 25th and 26th at Loughborough Town Hall. The sessions are open to the public to attend but people cannot make representations unless they have already been invited to do so by the Local Planning Officer. The Charnwood Local Plan 202137 provides a robust strategy for growth which simultaneously safeguards the environment and helps build healthy communities. It identifies how the borough will meet increased Government targets for new homes, as well as providing employment land and

It was advertised in the Loughborough Echo but not in a very prominent place. The site is land off Tickow Lane (opposite Anson Road) from the current Jelson Estate and the proposed Wm Davis estate. The proposal is looking to provide approximately 400 new homes, children’s play space and informal areas of open space. The planning application is likely to be deposited with Charnwood at the end of 2022 or beginning of 2023. We will keep you all informed with details of this application when we know. Festive cheer will soon be coming to Loughborough once again and Charnwood is looking for a special youngster to turn on the town’s Christmas lights. The switch-on will take place on Sunday November 20th and the Council has teamed up with Fosse 107 to run Light Up Loughborough competition to a deserving child to flick the switch in front of thousands of people. The competition is open to children aged 11 or under who have done something extraordinary – whether that’s helping in the community, worked hard at school or helped to look after a relative. They must also be a Charnwood resident. To enter the competition, all you need to do is fill out an online form at www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ LightUpLboro Updated byelaws introduced for skin piercing firms Cosmetic businesses in Charnwood which offer skin piercing treatments such as tattooing and microblading are being urged to register with Charnwood following the introduction of updated byelaws. The council recently adopted the updated byelaws to protect members of the public from the transmission of bloodborne viruses and other infectious diseases such as hepatitis. It follows an increase in recent years in the number of businesses wanting to deliver these types of service in Charnwood. In
particular, there has been a rise in microblading which is a cosmetic tattooing procedure that fills eyebrow with a pigment to make them appear fuller. The byelaws mean that businesses providing one or more skin piercing treatments are now required to formally register with the Council. Both the premises and any individuals carrying out treatments need to be registered. The services covered by the byelaws include:- Acupuncture, Cosmetic piercing, Electrolysis, Semi-permanent skin colouring (microblading) and Tattooing. Residents planning to have skin piecing treatment are being urged to check the business and individual are registered with the Council. Businesses need to display certificates on their premises. Unfortunately, if practices are not followed correctly, it can result in a number of health risks including the transmission of bloodborne diseases. Historic fair returns to Loughborough The historic fair will be running from Wednesday November 9th to Saturday November 12th. Granby Street car park will be closed from Monday 7th due to it being used for attractions and rides. The first official charter for Loughborough Fair was granted to the Lord of the Manor, Hugh le Depenser in 1221 by King Henry lll. Their venom is very complex and is used extensively in drug research.

It is getting darker earlier and half term has been and gone. Christmas is now in the shops and will soon be here. There have been changes at the top of the government, not sure what will have happened when I next write this column. £3 million government funding boost for adults numeracy project in Leicestershire. Earlier this year, County submitted a plan to the Department for Education for a £3 million slice of the UK Share Prosperity funding to allow it to deliver the national Multiply programme. The funding boost means that the council will now be able to deliver hundreds of free courses over the next 3 years. They will be available to adults who do not already have a GCSE grade C/ 4 or higher in maths or equivalent, and need to improve numeracy. Anyone aged 19 or over who fit the criteria will be eligible for the free courses. County Council’s adult learning service are working with partners including further education colleges and training providers, charitable and voluntary groups, employers to deliver free numeracy courses and programmes throughout the county to help people improve their numeracy skills. Multiple courses will be available across Leicestershire in person or online, at work or at home and either on a part-time or intensive basis. Care technology already starting to make a difference The county council’s new Care Technology service is already providing peace of mind to families as well as helping people to remain independent in their own homes. The service is now supporting around 400 adults across Leicestershire. Care Technology covers a wide range of equipment, such as alarm systems, falls detectors and GPS location trackers. It allows people to be monitored by trained staff in case they fall ill or have an accident. The technology involves monitoring and alert equipment. An example of the equipment in use is a discreet device, which triggers an alert if a person is alone and outside of an agreed ‘safe
zone’. This technology is available round the clock, seven days a week, and prompts an imeediate alert to their family, their carers or friends. To find out more visit www. leicestershire.gov.uk/caretechnology Mysteries from Neolithic Rothley displayed at Charnwood Museum A new display of archaeological finds from Rothley can now be seen at Charnwood Museum. The selections of finds displayed reveal a spectacular later Neolithic material culture from the time when Stonehenge was first being constructed. Leicestershire County Council Museums recently received the archaeological from the University of Leicester Archaeological Services excavations at Rothley Lodge Farm. The rarest object to be found was the Rothley ‘Face’ plaque, which is a unique example of Neolithic abstract art. Features found at the site, dating back to 2,900 BC, were a large shallow pit possibly the remains of a sunken hut, which shows signs of communal feasting. The area was filled with smashed pottery, hundreds of pieces of worked flint including arrowheads, knives and scrapers and charred remains of barley. These findings are extremely insightful in telling us more about prehistory. The display is permanent, and entry is free. Home is Where We Are! An Exhibition co-curated by the Gypsy and Traveller community Home is Where We Are is a project developed by Leicestershire County Council’s Cultural Participation team, Gypsy and Traveller Equality (GATE) and Foxton Canal Museum.
In 2021, GATE’s ladies group began co-curating the exhibition as part of the council’s Cultural Communities Network (CCN) programme. They shared their stories and insights into their lives with the aim of dispelling myths and reducing stereotypes. Over an eight-month period, they explored, shared, and chose stories, photographs and objects which reflected their lives. The exhibition is in the ladies’ own words includes a large book which documents their chosen key themes of home, travel, birth, marriage and death, education and work and their hopes for the future. Beware of scam energy rebate messages Residents are being urged to be aware of potential energy rebate scammers.
The exhibition has given people from the local Gypsy and Traveller community the opportunity to celebrate their culture, traditions, and stories in their own words and to share the challenges they face.
There has been a rise in fake text messages and emails claiming to be from ‘GOVUK’ and Ofgem, the independent regulator for Great Britain.
The exhibition was on display from 1st October till the 30th November at Foxton Canal Museum and the book developed by the group is available at Harborough Museum and library, and the Record Office for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
The messages will say that the recipients eligible for a government funded energy bill rebate and will ask for them to visit a weblink which is designed to steal financial and personal information. Your bank will never ask you to supply personal information on email or text. Eligible households’ will start

receiving energy bill rebates from October 2022, YOU DO NOT NEED TO APPLY FOR THE DISCOUNT, and there is no need to contact your energy supplier. The discount will be applied to your monthly household electricity bill for 6 months starting in October 2022. You will get:- £66 in October and November, £67 in December, January, February and March. You will get the discount monthly, even if you pay for your energy quarterly or use a payment card. Traditional prepayment meter users will get equivalent vouchers that you will need to redeem. Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) The site will take residual waste which cannot be recycled such as what is put in your black bin. This type of facility is heavily regulated with strict emission controls monitored by the Environmental Agency. The facility is currently in its commissioning phase, so not yet fully operational. The facility will mainly accept some residual ‘black bag’ waste from the Council. Mostly from Charnwood and North West Leicestershire. The remaining black bag waste will go to another ERF County use in Coventry. This will reduce the amount of waste County sends to landfill. The facility is owned by Biffa Waste Services and its operator Covanta. Therefore most of the waste going into the Newhurst Facility will come from other sources e.g. commercial waste. What about lorries coming to the facility? – There are restrictions under the site’s planning permission preventing HGVs accessing the site through Shepshed village (other than via the A512). The site can accept waste from 6am to 10 pm (MonFri) and 7.30am to 4pm (Sat). No deliveries can be made on Sundays or Public Holidays. Volunteers Needed!
October 11th saw a very interesting and informative talk on 100 years of cycling presented by Mr. Stuart Warburton, outlining the development of the cycle from the early wooden Draisine, commonly known as the Hobby Horse or Dandy Horse, a steerable two wheeled device propelled by the feet on the road surface.
We are in need of volunteers to help host Christmas Day at The Glenmore Centre in Shepshed.
Many forms of this device entered use, some designed for women, and others having various arrangements of wheels, before the ‘ordinary’ became popular, named by the general public as the Penny Farthing, which by virtue of its large front wheel could achieve higher speeds.

An interesting feature of many fledgling designs was the absence of any braking system, and foot rests for going downhill, a perilous activity by any standards. Stuart also described appropriate dress for this daring activity, particularly for women whose achievements were frowned upon by society. The next meeting will feature a talk on the life of Edith Piaff, presented by Julie Edge. The Society meets at 7.30 pm on the second Tuesday of every month in the Glenmore Centre, Shepshed, and new members are always welcome. For further details ring 07563164315.

As a society we often assume that it’s someone else’s job to serve our young people or that it may be the parents job. In a perfect world that would be so and also in this utopia that some of us live in there would be no crime. I wrote my first piece as newly appointed Marketing person in which I commented on funding and how it is handed out and how it must be used. Getting our young people to feel they are valued and are part of the community is not easy. No matter how progressive the work with the young is there will be a percentage who miss the cover and care. This is not just down to money but adult mentorship and volunteering as well. The fact is that most adults do not come into contact with 11-18 year olds who are not family. We spend most of our time in an adult world, but do you know what, so do young people. We will never eradicate crime or bad behaviour in adults or our young this is not a perfect world. I know for a fact the work that Vicky and the management team put in when trouble does arise would be left unchecked without them. At Pasion we are working to get adults and young people to inhabit each others environment. The young have done and continue to do their bit in setting up the Passion Cafe Sat/ Sun 12-4, all we have to do is go along and taste the food. Support this project and you will show that you do care. We all want a strong supportive community where we are positive and not negative. From A Dream To Reality...
You’ve probably seen signs of Frobishers Estate agents around the local area, but how did it start? Where did they come from? Tracey Frobisher is the director and owner of a local independent estate agents, specialising the sales and lettings, based in Shepshed. Tracey has 12 years’ experience in the property market and has always had a love and passion for property and still avidly watches programmes and media around the subject, driving her family mad!! Covid 19 sparked a change of career opportunity and the chance to pursue her dream. Tracy started by using her experience to date and building from there. She has researched around the industry and by chance “dropped” on a fantastic mentor. This happened by her choosing an area away from her local community, Tracey contacted an established agent based in the Peak District who very excitedly agreed to be her mentor through the process of setting up of her business. Having spent a spell with them, Tracy was fully armed with a wealth of knowledge and registered with the Property Ombudsman and Frobishers Sales & Lettings was born in August 2021. The ethos of the business is to provide a personal service to clients who are looking to sell their property, find a tenant for their rental property or manage their rental properties for them. Tracey provides a single, established contact for the client, in the business and looks to build a strong and open relationship with all clients. She wants to be seen as informed and approachable and is keen to deliver the service she would be looking for if she was selling her own home. The business offers a service that is not just limited to 9am – 5pm and is there for the clients when they need them, giving an informed, friendly, supportive approach. Their first year in business has seen Frobishers Sales & Lettings not only be nominated but win the “Best Estate Agent in Leicestershire” at the England Business Awards and now goes through to the National Finals. The latest idea from your local independent estate agent saw their ‘Information Morning’ which was on 5th November. This gave everyone the opportunity, in an open and relaxed environment, to ask questions not only of a selling and lettings agent, but also included a respected local solicitor who was there to answer their questions on the process and a knowledgeable mortgage advisor who can guide you through the current myths, challenges and opportunities available to you. Even if you don’t think you’re ready or don’t know how to start preparing to buy, sell or let a house, it’s got to be worth the time for a cup of coffee. Tracey has no doubt she will repeat these events in the coming months as she aims to help local people navigate the property market.
