We meet once a month, usually the last Wednesday of the month, at 2 30pm at the Council offices on Charnwood Road. Our reading covers a whole range of different genres, from psychological thrillers to historical novels to political/ spy dramas. In the last year we have read books by authors such as Maggie O’Farrell, Colston Whitehead and Robert Harris. All the books we read are suggested by our members. There is no membership fee just a £1 per session to cover the cost of the room hire. Shepshed History Society Article by Marjorie Schulz
On June 1th Shepshed History Society heard the fascinating and very sad story of Joseph Merrick the Leicester man who suffered with elephantiasis who went onto suffer with catastrophic swellings of the body that made him become hideously disfigured. Born in Leicester in the mid 1800's Dr Ann Featherstone gave the society a cruel insight of the stricken man as he struggled to survive as his family disowned him and threw him out of the house. He tried cigar rolling until his hands became too swollen to continue to do so, so he tried being a hawker selling bric a brac on street corners until the council refused to continue with his licence as he was considered to frightening to face the public. Having no choice he put himself
in the workhouse until a showman who showed freaks in empty shop windows in those days offered him a job. But as he couldn't do anything to entertain the onlookers he was soon sacked. Desperate for work he tried the continent to do the same job but eventually his employer stole his frugal savings so he had no choice but to return to England, penniless and homeless. Whereupon a Doctor in London gave him a room in his hospital in order to study his disease, so for a while at least he had a roof over his head and food to eat but four years later he died at the age of 26 and was buried in an unmarked grave in a London cemetery. It wasn't until 2019 that some kind soul finally showed him some respect and erected a little tasteful headstone to honour the stricken man who had been so unloved in his short and tragic life, ostracized by people who should have known much better. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

FUNDRAISING FOR UKRAINE BIKE RIDE - At 8am on the 29th of April, two static bikes were set up in a common area, then 29 students from the Iveshead Rotary Club Interact Group all banded together to make sure the pedals didn’t stop turning for the next 24 hours. Having seen what was occurring in Ukraine, we felt compelled to get sponsored and keep pushing on for the benefit of those less fortunate than us, with all proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee. Altogether, we raised a tremendous £2022.50! We’d like to say a huge 'thank you' to everyone who was generous enough to donate anything at all, as well as all the other staff and students that cheered us along - especially Mrs Brentnall, without whom we never could have achieved this. The Interact Group also recently held a BAKE SALE at Iveshead, raising another huge sum of £232 for the same charity. We're very proud to have been able to raise so much money for such a great cause! On Thursday 9th June we held a SUMMER MUSIC SHOWCASE featuring hits from the stage and screen, to raise money for Ukrainian charities. 35 students performed from years 7 to 13. The Iveshead Singers successfully made their debut singing ‘You Will Be Found’ from the hit musical Evan Hanson, ‘We’re All In This Together’ from High school musical, and their own cover of ‘Stand By Me’ which they performed with the Iveshead Guitar Club. There were also some wonderful piano performances, some outstanding vocal performances and Isobel Osborne (Yr9) played a clarinet solo of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ from The Wizard of Oz. The evening was a sell out and a great success, raising nearly £500 for Ukrainian refugee charities. As music teacher here since only September, and with the effects of the covid crisis over the last couple of years, I was not sure what to expect, but the students here completely blew me away with their talent, enthusiasm and support of one another.

Shepshed’s Super Slimmers Throw Themselves Into Fundraising Campaign Article by Shepshed Slimming World Slimmers have joined together to spring-clean their wardrobes and donate their clothes to Cancer Research UK in support of the national fundraising campaign ‘The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. Each single bag collected could raise around £25 for the charity. The campaign is a nationwide fundraising drive that sees Slimming World members across the UK donating clothes to Cancer Research UK, All profits go to support the charity’s life-saving work to help beat cancer sooner. Christina & Claire-Lou, who runs the Shepshed groups which meet every Wednesday 9.30am, 5.30pm or 7.30pm, says their members were more than willing to donate their unwanted clothes to help such a worthwhile cause, and jumped at the chance to recycle the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to help raise money. They said: “Members of our Shepshed Slimming World group’s have really embraced this fabulous fundraising campaign and they have been more than happy to donate their ‘big’ clothes because they know that they’re never going to need them again! They’re looking and feeling fantastic -- we’re very proud! One in three of us are affected by cancer and being overweight increases the risk of developing the disease, so we’re determined to do anything we can do to help fight cancer and help people lead healthier lives. At group each week we support members to make healthy changes to the way they shop, cook and eat that they can keep up for life. We’re delighted that our members are always so keen to pull together and support local good causes. Cancer touches so many people’s lives so most people are keen to contribute. The money raised will support Cancer Research UK’s research that helps to find new treatments and, in the long term a cure for cancer.” Christina & Claire-Lou says we feel great! Als Electronic Shepshed Experience Article by Allan Dobb
Al’s Electronic Shepshed Experience leans heavily on people giving me plenty of time to help with their projects. I was contacted by Laura the Landlady from the Bull and Bush at Shepshed, about an attempt on a Guinness world record concerning Darts pairs. This record was Fifty one hours one minute, so to break the record and set a new one, the four lads had to do fifty two hours and one minute. By any stretch this was going to be a tall order, with long hours without sleep our bodies shut down. The four lads to take up this challenge were as follows; Kev Bryan,James Hoult,aka Nez, Dave Sloan, and Brad Cave. All chose out four charities; The Shepshed Food bank, First responders,Jakin and MacMillan to which all will benefit from monies raised. A auction took place with some eye watering prizes and some fantastic bids. I suppose you know by now the boys are now Guinness World pairs record holders with a new high of Sixty hours. Hopefully when they have all recovered I will be able to have a chinwag for the poddy, so look out for that. Congratulation to everyone who contributed to the Guinness record attempt, in any form that took. It doesn’t stop there, and you can add Ben Norman to the growing list of Shepshed Champions. For those who don’t know Ben has been plotting his career very carefully, and on June 18th won his fight against Liam Dring. This was for the Midlands Area Flyweight Boxing Championship at the Harvey Hadden, Nottingham. For me in Boxing both fighters put not only their reputation, but there different skills they bring the fight game. Our main congratulations go to Ben, but not forgetting the efforts and the team of the opponent. As I write this I will try and bring you an interview with Ben and his feelings about this achievement. When I started my own Podcasting project, I wasn’t aware of the talent we have on our patch, it keeps giving. On the horizon and coming around Autumn I will be putting a feature on our local authors, again another rich vein of talent. I selected three and on different journey’s in their writing careers. They say we all have a book in us, not too sure I have, but if you can organise the time factor, then maybe. Just got to finish the background and we can then get to know the mechanics it takes to get a book into the hands of the reading public. Hope some of you have managed a holiday, or though staying in this country has more of an appeal than it used to. We’ve spent two breaks in Blighty, the last one was in North -West Wales. This was a brilliant week speaking with local residents. If you want to find the best places to eat, then the locals are the best port of call. We were pointed to an excellent place for a hearty breakfast, which set us up for the day ahead. The location was such, we would never have found it without local knowledge. It good to talk. Hathern’s Big Week was a great success again with a plethora of events. The library played a big role with activities on the Thursday, including a challenge to the village to read 70 stories out loud. Last time I was in the library, Ann Clark’s lovely mandala with stars to count the stories read was still in the 50s. Please try to help us to reach 70. Proms in the park was a stonking success with a packed marquee. The Big Quiz attracted a lot of teams and completed the season with the Dew Drop winning the trophy after a hard-fought battle with Hathern Club. This was very impressive as the Americans in the team had to cope with the majority of questions being based in British culture. The new season of bi-weekly quizzes will resume on July 7th, when the pub and the club begin again the quest for supremacy. How about getting a team of mates or neighbours together and taking part? The quizzes take place on the first and third Thursday of the month. Hathern Open Gardens was spectacular again and showed us once more what marvels lurk behind fences and hedges. The indefatigable HVA are undaunted by having a good chunk of their site gobbled up by the roundabout. They will be putting the marquee and other structures in a slightly different place. This year’s headliner is Lulu. No, not a tribute act but the real McCoy. Watch out on their Facebook page for new acts to be continually added. Please buy tickets before the event to give these local heroes a bit of security. The outlay for the event is around 90 grand. We endure all weathers to put the thing together and to take it down again. Don’t be put off. The Glastonbury crowd have to endure wet and mud. Let’s make this year’s festival a resounding success. You are indeed very fortunate to have this magnificent volunteer led festival on your doorstep. The Open Spaces manager is planning to start planting Hathern Wood in the autumn. He has tweaked the plan a bit to account for the shortfall in funding from the Forestry Commission. The majority of planting will be done by contractors because we need their expertise in layout. But there will be plenty of scope for locals to join in as volunteers. I will tell you when I know the start date and find out how you can get involved. If it falls between my deadlines, I will tell the parish council and they will publicise it on their Facebook page. For several reasons the library sponsored walk has been postponed till the autumn. I would have been sitting tonight with my feet in a bowl of water with a prospect of another 17 miles tomorrow. I will have those joys at another time. Thank you to everyone who has contributed. At the time of writing this article, it is Armed Forces Week. Every single day, members of the Armed Forces work around the clock to keep the UK and our allies safe, and we salute them for their service. I am proud of the courage and dedication of our Armed Forces, and I warmly welcome this Government’s support of our veterans. Many veterans require support upon leaving the military and it is our duty to ensure that those who served our country continue to receive the very best possible care. There is much going on locally for veterans. In Shepshed, the Volunteer Centre run veterans' coffee mornings, every Monday (apart from bank holidays), 10am to 12 noon in their heated activity shed. If you are interested in attending, please give them a ring on 01509 508040, for more information. It was an honour to officially open the Veterans Wellbeing Hub in Loughborough recently. It takes place every Friday between 10am and 1pm at the Loughborough Wellbeing Centre. It is a drop-in event open to all veterans for advice and support. The Charnwood Veterans Breakfast Club is also a great way for veterans and their families to meet up with others. Organised by the wonderful Vicky Coomber, I visited one of the sessions last year – it was such a great event. More information about the Breakfast Club is available on Charnwood Borough Council’s website, which has information about this and other support available to veterans locally: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/support_for_the_armed_forces Charnwood Borough Council has a strong track record in supporting veterans. The Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Hilary Fryer, is passionate about helping veterans locally and I speak to her about her work regularly. Just outside the constituency is the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall. I had the privilege in visiting shortly after I was elected. This facility is second-to-none, where injured service personnel can receive the very best care. Facilities include a swimming pool, multiple gymnasiums, outdoor amputee mobility rehabilitation areas and a state-of-the-art research facility. I was amazed that such a facility existed on our doorstep. In Parliament, I have supported the Government in their efforts to support veterans. The Office for Veterans’ Affairs was created in 2019 with the aim of taking on the challenges faced by our nation’s veterans. The office works with departments to coordinate and drive Government policy on veterans’ welfare, spanning mental and physical health, education and employment. The Ministry of Defence also works closely with the NHS and service charities to ensure that veterans who have been physically injured have access to appropriate care. For example, the Veterans Trauma Network aims to provide a safety net for trauma-recovering veterans and transitioning Service personnel, to ensure their life-long healthcare needs are met. The Veterans’ Gateway, provided by a consortium of veteran charities, provides 24/7 support and advice to veterans and their families. This includes help with health concerns, housing, employment, and finance, all issues which disproportionately affect disabled veterans.
The number of Covid cases is on the rise again with increases of 40% and 25% in the last two weeks. Hospitalisations are relatively low. Let’s try to keep these numbers down as the last thing we need now is another nasty variant to put us back in square one.
The Veterans' Strategy Action Plan which included specific provisions to help make Britain the best place in the world to be a veteran by 2028. The Government will provide an additional £18 million over the next three years for veterans physical and mental health services as well as £5 million in new funding for innovative health projects. Further £44 million will be invested in creating a single Veterans UK portal, which will put all pension and compensation services online.

Bandstand concerts return to Queen’s Park Throughout the summer months, Queen’s Park in Loughborough will host a variety of exciting concerts for residents and visitors to attend. The concerts have not been able to take place over the past couple of years due to coronavirus pandemic, but the concerts returned with a fantastic and well-attended performance from the Charnwood Symphonic Wind Orchestra on Father Day, Sunday June 19th. Further concerts will be taking place during the summer, including the Loughborough Male Voice Choir on Sunday 3rd July and the New Orleans Hotshots |Jazz Band on Sunday July 17th. New email checks for electoral register in Charnwood Residents in Charnwood have been asked to look out for an
email as part of an annual check of voter details. Every year, Charnwood Borough Council sends a letter to all households to check voters’ details are correct on the register. For the first time, the Council is going to send some voters an email to carry out the check to save time, money and help the environment. It follows similar moves by other councils which have helped reduce the number of letters being sent out. The email was sent from the electoral.services@charnwood. gov.uk on Thursday, June 23rd and residents were asked to respond by Tuesday July 12th. If more than one person in the household receives the email, only one person needs to respond. If a response is not received or the Council does not hold an email address for anyone in the property, a paper form will be delivered by August 19th. Where data suggests there have been some changes to the voters at the property, a paper canvass form will be sent by Friday August 19th. I am a retired Shepshed GP and love to keep active. I have done various challenges including a Geneva to Milan bike ride covering 400 miles over 4 days in 2015. In 2017, whilst on a challenge to cycle up Mont Ventoux, three times in a single day for the Club des Cinglés honour, I had a simple fall during which I cracked my rib. Unknown to me at the time, as I had no symptoms, I had also suffered a head injury. Three weeks later whilst visiting family in Boston USA I started getting symptoms of leg weakness and rapidly went off my legs and had to be admitted to Massachusettes General Hospital where I was diagnosed with a massive brain bleed. I had a bilateral craniotomy to drain the large sub-dural haematoma. Following this I had to have intensive rehab. Since then I have had a lot of interest in brain function and research.
I am very fortunate that in this endeavour I am being joined by my wife Val. She has never run a marathon before but has run two half marathons many years ago. Val also has an interest in brain research as her mother has dementia, a cruel disease with worsening incidence in an ageing population. In terms of running, we have embarked on a beginners schedule and hope that despite my two recent injuries - a pulled right calf and a pulled left hamstring - we remain on course to run in and finish the marathon. We will be extremely grateful for any support from local Shepshed people towards many areas of brain research including Alzheimer's, brain tumours, head injuries, strokes, and many other neurological conditions. Jubilee weekend is over and our street party went off well even though it rained all day. The party in Glenmore Park went off with a swing and everybody who attended enjoyed themselves and thanks should be given to the Town Council who put on this free event for the residents of Shepshed. I have written to county highways expressing my concerns regarding 2 planning applications, the first being the application for a dentist at 84 Leicester Road and the second for 8 flats to the rear of 39a Leicester Road. By the time you receive this magazine the school summer holidays with have started and parents will be scratching their heads to think of things to keep the children occupied and off of their phones and Ipads. Any ideas as I have my grandchildren living with me would be much appreciated. I spoke on the importance of carers and the job they do. I also stated that we have a duty to provide adaptations to maximise independence. for all children aged 4-12 years to take part in this year’s Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge. Children can sign up for the challenge at any time throughout the summer at any library or on line https:// summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ Electric vehicle (EV) charging points After receiving several enquiries regard EV charging I contacted officers and a new webpage has been created which can be viewed here: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/roadsand-travel/cars-and-parking/ electric-vichles-ev The webpage also includes a link to Zap-map which displays a map with locations and providers of available charge-points, the type of charge, its availability and utilisation fee (if applicable) As you may be aware the issues arising with growing demand for Electric Vehicles and the associated infrastructure are still being understood by the authority as county are very keen to support but there are some practical issues and liabilities we are still working through. Unfortunately at this time the Highway Authority cannot currently approve or authorise trailing cables across the highway or footpaths. Homes for Ukraine update County have, at the time of going to print, reached 1,000 mark for the number of visa applications relating to sponsor addresses in Leicestershire. Of these over 500 have arrived in the county and 71 are in Charnwood. Security and criminal records checks are carried out by the Government before visas are issued. The County Council is carrying out DBS and welfare/ safeguarding checks on sponsors with the district councils carrying

Iveshead School Interact Club - 24hr Sponsored Static Bike Ride For Ukraine Beginning at 8am on the 29th April, two static bikes were set up in a common area at Iveshead School. From that point on, 29 students from the Iveshead Rotary Club Interact Group all banded together to make sure the pedals didn’t stop turning for the next 24 hours. Having seen what was occurring in Ukraine, we felt compelled to help in any way we could, and so decided to organize this event and get sponsored to keep pushing on for the benefit of those less fortunate than us, with all proceeds going to the Disasters Emergency Committee. Altogether, we raised a tremendous £2022.50! We’d like to say a huge thankyou to everyone who was generous enough to donate anything at all, as well as all the other Staff and Students that cheered us along – especially Mrs Brentnall, a teacher at the School without whom we never could have achieved this. The Interact Group also recently held a Bake Sale at Iveshead, raising another huge sum of £232 for the same Charity. We’re very proud to have been able to raise so much money for such a great cause! It is the end of the Lion year in July. I have had a good year as President this year, compared to the previous two and I’d like to think we have managed to almost get back to our pre pandemic ways. Our activities have grow over the year and our membership has grown too, 4 new members have joined us and The Fossl’s (Friends of Shepshed Lions) membership has grown too. The Fossl’s help has been invaluable to us and many of our activities would not have been successful without them. The involvement of their children has been wonderful. I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to them all. THANK YOU also to the residents of Shepshed. It is your support that helps us to help each other. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES : July 2021 - June 2022 • Fossl’s WhatsApp group active throughout the year • Active CFR member throughout the year • SHEPSHED LIONS ANNUAL CARNIVAL. Aided by the Fossl’s • Elderly person’s Afternoon tea delivered to 55 recipients. Aided by Meet’n’Eat and Fossl’s. (Oct 21) • Santa sleigh and Santa at Market Traders Christmas event • Poppy wreath laid at Town’s Remembrance Service • Provided PA equipment and personnel at Remembrance Service. • SANTA SLEIGH - 2 weeks touring as much of Shepshed as was possible, aided by the Fossl’s. • Christmas hamper raffle placed in 8 pubs. • Attended volunteer Fair in library • Easter egg raffle placed in 11 establishments. • Elderly persons tea party, with entertainment + some delivered. Aided by Meet’n’Eat and Fossl’s (May 22) • Tea tent provided at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Picnic in the park • Tea tent provided at the Fire Station Open Day. • 2 members visited Lion’s HQ in Birmingham to hand over approx.3000 pairs of used spectacles collected over the last year. MEMBERS EVENTS/ACTIVITIES : July 2021 - June 2022 • Meetings conducted in person (for 1st time in 2 years) + zoom throughout the year • One of our members 80th birthday recognised by the club. • Social event as a thank you to the Fossl’s at Bull & Bush. • 3 members attended Districts Convention • 4 new members formally joined the club. (Photo) thanks • Social outing - Meal for members and families and Fossl’s at Truck Stop. • 3 members enjoyed Loughborough Lions 50th anniversary me • Barbecue held to hand over to the new President in coming committee. (All same as last year) • Social event - pot luck supper with talk from the woodland trust about trees for the Jubilee.

Shepshed & District Camera Club had a varied programme over the last few months with talks, Club practical evenings and competitions. Talks were given by Tal Chohan on Zoo Photography from when he started through to the present showing examples of his photos and which Zoos he visited. Ashly Franklin gave an interesting talk on “The Wider World of Photography Pt1” and “One Year of Wildlife” presentation was given by Gianpiero Ferrari, Sileby Photographic Society, which contained some stunning photographs. Two 3-way competitions were held between Shepshed & District Camera Club, Ashby Camera Club and Coalville and District Camera Club. The first was a 3-Way match battle which Shepshed one and the 2nd was a 3-way Print battle in which Shepshed came 2nd. The 2nd round of the internal competitions took place on Tuesday 29th March and again the standard of photographs was good. With much consideration the judge decided the following would receive awards; Sport/Action (Prints) 1st Stephen Hall - Laughing Waterskier. 2nd Garry Rennocks – For the high jump. 3rd Fred Ing – The Instructor. Highly Commended - Alan Harris - Flying Lap. Highly Commended - Garry Rennocks - 2 People a dog and a Castle. Open Category (Projected Images) 1st Alan Harris - Whisper in my Ear Dear. 2nd Kevin Moore -Two's Company. 3rd Mick Jelly - Lizard Lifeboat Station. Highly Commended – Alan Harris – Lincoln Cathedral Highly Commended – Garry Rennocks - 2 People, a Dog and a Castle On Tuesday 24th April the 3rd round of the internal competitions took place.
