Probus Club After the usual greeting by our President, Pat Harris, our secretary Wilf Shelton continued with club business and Stan told his funny stories.

A good meal was enjoyed by the members before the day's speaker, David Jones, regaled is with tales of "The Shakers of New England." Now don't be fooled by the name, they are not a dance group; they are a religious order formed near Manchester. Like many breakaway religions they weren't understood in England and so, led by their leader Ann Leigh, eight of them sailed for America in 1774. Although there are similarities Shakers are definitely not Quaker or Amish.

Shakers expanded in the North East states of America, numbering 6000 members by 1820. They decided that Ann Leigh was the second coming after Jesus even though she was a woman.

The Shakers were well ahead of the rest of the world both in innovation and education.

Children were given advanced education with boys being taught in winter and the girls in summer.

Boys were required to work in the fields in summer hence the schooling in winter.

Shakers earned money by making furniture such as ladder back chairs, also brushes and packaging seeds. However they were a little extreme in their religious fervour, one of their rules being no physical contact so procreation was difficult which most probably explains why there are only three Shakers left in the world. Many left the order with some joining the Quakers who were happy to incorporate them into their own movement. The women in the Shaker order were treated as equals far earlier than the rest of the world.

The early inventions by the Shakers were not patented and were stolen by unscrupulous manufacturers and eventually the Shakers woke up to the fact and closed the loophole. One of the successes of the Shaker women who were excellent knitters were their big jumpers and cardigans incorporating a single letter signifying a school, college or university and these became popular throughout the world.

As mentioned earlier there are only three Shakers remaining and they are old, one man and two women so unfortunately it is certain that in the next few years the movement will become extinct - victims of their own order.

Shepshed History Society September 12th Shepshed History Society enjoyed a very interesting and in depth explanation of the history of Leicestershire Manor Houses given by Mr Richard Knox.

Manor Houses he explained were first originated by the Anglo Saxons but when William the Conqueror came in force in 1066 they became a very established feature in medieval Britain. Usually granted to Knights for their services in battle or deeds that had impressed the monarch, there could have been more than one Manor house in a town or village which would also have come with vast acres of land.

Running Club Takes Over Shepshed Running Club (SRC) successfully took over the organising of the Rushcliffe Parkrun, Notts, last month. Parkrun is a 5k, free, timed run (not a race). Beginning 13 years ago it is now the biggest running event in the world , taking place in 17 countries with more than 200,000 people walking, jogging, running, and volunteering every week.

Rushcliffe regularly has over 400 participants. Club Chairman Richard Bibb said "Every week many of our members take part so we decided to become more involved and manage the run for a week. We provided the Race Director, timekeepers, marshals and of course cake".

Shepshed Ramblers Shepshed Ramblers next walk on Sunday 16 October has been changed from its published walk to a six mile circular i.e Hopping Around Bunny.

Walkers to meet in Shepshed Market Place for a prompt 09.30 departure with an expected return between 2.00 and 3.00 pm. Walkers to carry a coffee and lunch break. New members are guaranteed a warm welcome.

Also, Shepshed Ramblers AGM is to be held on Friday 27 October, commencing 07.30 pm in Charnwood Road Community rooms (Parish Council office opposite Tesco), with the formal business followed by supper, a raffle and quiz. If you are thinking of joining the walking group this might be an opportunity to meet and chat to fellow walkers.

And as the evening progressed Mr Knox showed slides of the various manor houses we are still fortunate to have today and he went onto to explain all about their architectural features. One of which in many cases was that the kitchen would be built away from the main house because of dangers from fires. These Manor Houses were normally centred round a large central hall where both the family and servants would all eat together, the family though on a raised dais overlooking the minions grouped together down below. Many Manor Houses held court in these buildings and would also settle all manner of village disputes during their life time. It is a great tragedy that so many of them have now been demolished taking with them their intriguing tales of the past.

The October meeting on Tuesday the 10th will be given by Mr Jake Billingham, the subject to be The Many Different Aspects of the Titantic Tragedy. New members are always welcome to join us.

St Botolph's Church Jumbo Jumble Sale It's time for the annual jumble sale which will be held this year on Saturday 21st October in our church hall. Doors open 9.30am and close at noon. There will be an amazing collection of good quality clothing for all ages and tip top white elephant items. There is ample parking adjacent to the hall and fitting room and mirror will be provided.

Refreshments will be available whilst you browse. So, come along and take advantage of this chance to give your wardrobe a makeover!

Rotary Club Thanks First Responders Shepshed Charnwood Rotarian, Fred Thompson (left), took great pleasure in presenting a donation to Graham Whitehead Chair of the South Notts Community First Responders. This was in recognition of their invaluable support at the club's annual Kegworth duck race.

The First Responders are all unpaid volunteers from their local area. They are trained and dispatched by the East Midlands Ambulance Service to attend emergency calls around the local villages, including Kegworth.

Graham said that they can be with a patient very quickly, the critical time before the ambulance arrives. All this is undertaken at the Responders' own expense so any donation is vital to ensure that life saving equipment is always on hand and fully operational.

The club acknowledges the help received from volunteers such as the First Responders and also the input provided by Long Eaton Sea Scouts and Guides who also received a donation towards their running costs.

Shepshed Carnival What a fantastic day!!!!! The sun was shining all day and our fabulous community turned out in large numbers to support this annual charity event. This was our 8th Annual Charity Carnival and we really enjoyed the event. It is hard work but the result made all that worthwhile and we raised a substantial amount of money that will be spent in support of our community.

Shepshed Lions Club 3rd Annual Christmas Market Plans are well in advance for this year’s 3rd Annual Christmas Market in The Hallcroft, Shepshed that will take place on Sunday 17th December 2017. The event will start a little later this year, opening at 12.30pm until close. We have the usual festive stalls, School choirs, Brass Band, Mulled Wine, Mince pies and of course, Santa’s Grotto. There are still a few stalls available at a cost of £25, and we are looking for festive stalls, selling seasonal goodies. Santa Will Be At The Crown Hotel, Market Place, Shepshed Santa Claus will be at The Crown Hotel on Saturday 16th December 2017 in his Grotto. He would love to see as many children as possible and he will be there from 12 noon until 6pm.

A very special guest opened the Carnival this year, Junior Exon, who had had two major operations to enable him to walk. Seeing him do just that, walk into the arena was a fantastic and very moving sight. He was with The Right Honourable Nicky Morgan,MP, Chair of Shepshed Town Council Claire Poole and Lion President Bob Lilley.

We had lots of really positive comments on Social Media about the Carnival that inspires us to do it again next year. We try to make the event bigger and better each year so look out for next year!!

Lions Help Evie-Mae Shepshed Lions have stepped in to help a local family who had problems storing specialist kit for their three year old daughter. Evie-Mae Cryer is being treated for ALL leukemia, and having some of the things she needs at home means she has to go to hospital less often. Evie-Mae's mum, Kelly Cryer, said, “The Lions have bought two wardrobes that can hold all of the equipment we need to have for Evie-Mae, and this makes her bedroom in particular much more like a home. She's now got much more room to spread her toys out, and she's taking full advantage of the opportunity.”

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders The Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are still going strong and will be celebrating its fourth birthday on 2nd December 2017. We are a team of 15 volunteers who give their time freely to support our communities and East Midlands Ambulance Service. Around 107,000 people in Leicestershire are fighting their daily battles with heart and circulatory disease. Heart and circulatory disease kills nearly 2,300 people each year in Leicestershire – nearly a quarter of them before the age of 75.

The nation’s heart charity is calling on people across Leicestershire to take heart and join the fight against heart disease by becoming part of their local fundraising group and raising vital funds for heart research.

Carrie Seaton, BHF Fundraising Manager for Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, said: “Heart disease is heartless. Too many lives are lost each year, and we’re determined to do everything we can to protect more families from this devastation. Our fundraising groups are the face of the BHF in their local communities. From running fundraising events through to supporting schools and local businesses, or organising collections, they are a fantastic way to support our vital work and help people locally. Any time that you can give will be invaluable, because every pound raised will help fund vital research and identify new treatments that could help save lives.”

BHF research has helped halve death rates from heart and circulatory disease over the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. Through the public’s generosity the BHF will fund half a billion pounds of new research by 2020.

Shepshed Special Community Bus (SSCB) Following the retirement of Jane Hopper we are pleased to say that Alison Sharp has taken over the role of coordinator for the SSCB. She will continue to drive the bus when she is not in the office.

The office which is situated inside the Volunteer Bureau in Charnwood Road will be open from 08.30-11.30am Monday to Friday.

Autumn seemed to come around early this year, I had hoped for a Indian Summer but the rain and cold mornings put paid to that!

Autumn is often the busiest time of year for my business. I’m in the throws of surveying, designing, developing, managing and planting gardens. Planting in the later part of the year can really be beneficial to plants as they are able to establish whilst there is some warmth in the ground plus the soil tends to be moist – all perfect for allowing plants to settle in and develop a good root system before the depths of winter and the onset of the following spring.

Planning ahead and planting biennials in the autumn months will provide you with a great splash of colour next spring. Biennials are plants which grow from seed, develop the green leafy plant in their first year and then they flower in their second year. Once they have bloomed they set seed and the cycle starts again.

A trip to the local garden centre or nursery now will reveal packs of colourful pansies, violas and primulas but also look out for the following: Wallflowers – (aka Erysimum) these are often sold in packs to although you may still be able to find them in bare-root bunches which is the traditional way to grow them. be showing colour now – just leafy tops. They do all of their showy colour in the spring once they have established and grown larger. The beauty of Wallflowers is that you can plant them and then leave them to themselves, looking forward to a colourful display from April onwards.

Wallflowers come in a dazzling array of colours from blood red to calming ivory. I like to us them to fill gaps in borders and they team up well with Tulips too.

Some of my favourites to look out for are:- ‘Fireking’ – a fiery red-orange, ‘Sunset Purple’ – inky purple, ‘Ivory White’ perfect for cool planting schemes.

Forget-me-nots – (AKA Myosotis) are a traditional favourite of bedding plant lovers! It’s also a plant that most of us can recognise. Small blue five petalled flowers are held in dense clouds above mounds of fresh green foliage. They needn’t be confined to bedding schemes. I like to use Forget-me-nots in perennial and shrub borders to give a flush of colour before the larger plants get into their flow. Forget-me-nots are available in pink and white forms too so look out for those. They are prolific seeders, so you will find them popping up in your borders in following years. They are easily pulled up if they are in the wrong spot. Look out for Dwarf ‘Victoria’ – tiny blue flowering form, ‘Rosea’ – pink, ‘Snowsylva’ – compact

white type. Garden centres often sell mixed colour packs too.

Sweet Williams – (AKA Dianthus barbatus) a really traditional cut flower that you see briefly in late spring or early summer and they are grown in the UK. They can be planted in borders to add colour, in a spare patch to be used for cut flowers or there are some dwarf varieties like ‘Wee Willie’ which are dwarf and suited to growing in pots and troughs. Varieties to look out for:- D. ‘Kaleidoscope Mix’ – soft pinky two-tone shade, ‘Sooty’ – almost black these are a real statement plant in a border, ‘Wee Willie’ – a good dwarf form.

Using Biennials Try filling gaps in your borders with the biennials I mention above. They will keep their foliage throughout the winter, giving interest and then give a splash of colour early in the year.

Use dwarf varieties in pots with Violas, Pansies, or Primulas, the biennials will continue the display once the others are finishing.

Plant them with spring bulbs such as Tulips, Alliums and Daffodils to extend the season of interest.

If you need to add some colour to your garden then pop to your local garden centre and pick up some biennials. Next month I’ll be looking selecting plants to encourage birds in to the garden.

Ashley Grant Smith (Bomber) Born In Leicester Limping Over The Line For Lymphoma 2 months into meeting Ashley and we were just getting to know each other - I could tell he was going to be a handful but nothing could quite prepare me for how much of a handful he's turned out to be.

It was a Thursday afternoon and Ashley was called by his GP to come into see them ASAP as tests on a "sebaceous cyst" in his neck had showed something unexpected. I left work and headed to London - and so it began... Suspected CANCER. After initial tests and weeks of waiting, the original diagnosis was Sarcoma. However, the Dr's were still not 100% sure as to what type of disease it was. Biopsies, Bone Marrow Tests, Scans, you name it he had it. It was around 3 months of anxious waiting, googling every type of Sarcoma under the sun to then be told that his official diagnosis was something completely different - Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma NOS. Finally a diagnosis but not the one we wanted to hear. A Blood Cancer that is so rare and individual that there is currently not a standard treatment available - overall survival rates for this type of Lymphoma are around 20%.

After exhausting the Google database I came to the realisation that there is very little published information on T-Cell lymphomas and everything I did read wasn't very promising. This is why the work of Bloodwise and other charities such as Lymphoma Association are so important.

Ashley has to this date received 3 chemotherapy regimes (CHOP, ESHAP and IVE) all of which have failed to get him into the remission he needs for His Bone Marrow Transplant. He has spent a number of weeks in hospital with life threatening infections and I've had many sleepless nights and trains to be besides his hospital bed. He has also had intensive Radiotherapy and just when we thought we were getting somewhere, results from his scan showed that it had spread to his bones, liver and lymph nodes across his lymphatic system. It took 8 months to get Ashley a diagnosis and although the NHS has been fantastic, this shows that there needs to be more research into these cancers.

It has been the most difficult year of my life especially after losing my Grandma to cancer 3 years ago. I often think to myself why us? What have we done to deserve this? Ashley is not only my boyfriend but he is also my best friend, and faced with the possibility of losing him is heartbreaking. This should be the time of our lives where we live, and travel the world. We shouldn't be sitting in hospital rooms waiting on results to determine whether we will have the rest of our lives together.

Ashley is currently on a trial, which is funded by charities such as Bloodwise. We are faced by a real possibility that all treatment options will run out and it is so important that we can raise money to fund more trials like this in the hope of finding a cure - not just for Ashley but for everyone one else facing the same reality.

Ashley has always remained positive (even when his beloved hair fell out!) and has been there for me when I’ve not been as strong as he has. His family and friends have been amazing and a big support unit for him. I am now running my first half marathon around London to try and raise money to show my support to everyone in need of help and for those trying to help.

Serenade News This month Serenade, Shepshed ladies community choir, started back after the summer break with the AGM followed by the first sing session of the Autumn. During this session we were delighted to present cheque donations to our 2 nominated charities for 2017, £1500 to STEPS and £1500 to Shepshed Toy Library. We also presented cheques to the value of £500 to each of our previous nominated charities. It’s so wonderful to support local and often Shepshed based charities and get to know those who do the great work keeping them running.

Thank you to everyone who came and supported us at our concerts to make this possible.

We are now busily rehearsing for our next concert, which will be as a part of the Royal British Legion concert, on October 21st at Emmanuel Church, Loughborough.

Stay Active This Half-Term With Adventures For All The Family From horse riding to yoga, there are plenty of adventures to be had in Charnwood this half-term.

Charnwood Borough Council’s holiday activity programme is back in October with a host of activities on offer.

The activities will run from Monday, October 16th to Friday, October 20th, 2017 at locations across the borough including Sileby, Thurcaston and Loughborough.

Julie Robinson, head of neighbourhood services, said: “Our activities are always well-attended and we hope that this half-term will be no exception.

Yoga is back by popular demand and this time the whole family can take part in a session. We’ve also got a new football session in partnership with Fusion Lifestyle, who run our leisure centres in the borough. We’re committed to helping children in Charnwood to stay active and healthy and these activities are a fun and affordable way of doing that.”

Most of the activities are suitable for children of all ages and families are welcome to come and watch and take part in a number of events.

The activities will be available to book from Monday, October 2nd.

We also have confirmed dates for our Christmas concert, along with the Loughborough concert band, at St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed, on December 23rd. Ticket information will follow.

Seasonal Issues - Latest News From Well we are heading into autumn and now is the time to think of the animals and wildlife that share our world as they start to increase their reserves to ensure that they survive the winter months. With a little time and effort we could all make a difference to the wildlife that might visit our gardens at this time of year.

Feeding the birds: Why not make or buy a variety of foods to help the wild birds to survive the autumn and winter months? Bird cakes are quick to make and there is the added advantage of you being able to clear out your cupboards.

Lard is the best fat to use for this (as a vegetarian I don’t tend to buy this except for bird cake making but we’ve tried the alternatives and the birds aren’t convinced!)

• Warm the fat and mix in dried fruits, grated cheese, bread scraps, bird seed and crushed nuts. Do not include salt as this causes dehydration.

• Stir until there is an even covering of the warmed fat.

• Make a hole in the yogurt pot and put some string through before stuffing the container with the fatty mixture if you want to hang it.

• Press the mixture into your chosen small pots or reuse cleaned coconut shells.

• Add a stick to the mixture before it sets to make a perch if you want to.

• Bird cakes are best in smaller quantities to keep them fresh and they can be stored in the fridge until you need them.

• Put them onto bird tables or hang them to attract a wide variety of birds.

Please remember to put out fresh water as well as food during the colder months too. Boiled and then cooled water does not freeze so quickly so it may be easier to use this in water bowls. Put a stone to weigh down light trays and to give birds somewhere to perch. Birds need to bathe as well as drink as this keeps their feathers in tip – top condition.

Hedgehogs and minibeasts: Why not try to have a go at making a hide for a hibernating hedgehog too?! Gardeners tend to tidy their gardens in the autumn but please don’t be too tidy as hedgehogs and the minibeasts they feed on like longer grass and places under hedges.

Don’t forget to store all materials for burning away from the bonfire site and then move the material to make a safe bonfire a small distance away.

Moving the materials will ensure that hedgehogs, frogs, toads, newts and a myriad of minibeasts are not killed when the bonfire is lit.

Fireworks: Talking of bonfires leads to the subject of fireworks. Love them or loath them we have to appreciate that many animals don’t like them. Animals hate the sight of the flashes, the noise of the bangs and screams, the smell of the fire and their senses are heightened more than ours are. This is particularly the case with outdoor caged pets, cats that are not brought in at night and for our wildlife.

Dogs with their super sensitive hearing often suffer even when indoors so please remember to speak to your vet or pop up to The Woodside Shop in Scudamore road ahead of this frightening display of sights and sounds to help your pets to cope.

Generally speaking move rabbits and guinea pigs in their cages into a shed or garage to reduce the noise and the smell. Walk dogs before fireworks are set off and keep them on a lead, bring cats indoors, shut curtains and light the room to minimise the impact of the flashes. Leave a TV or radio on if you are going out. Remember, don’t overwhelm your pet - as hard as it may sound, ignore their behaviour and be as normal as you can – don’t feed their fear by cuddling them tightly, or feeding them rich food treats as they have not eaten their tea. Do give them space and a chance to hide.

Now is also the time to check that dog coats still fit and are in a good state of repair. Why not also check the batteries on any of the lights on collars to make sure they don’t let you down when you need them most!

Check hutches and other housing to ensure that they are draught free and watertight – It won’t be long before the dark nights and the weather turns autumn into winter and our pets and wildlife deserve to be considered.

E-MAILS Cllr. Radford wishes to apologise due to the fact that she has had problems with her emails going to her Charnwood address and has not been receiving some for over 3 weeks. PLANNING A number of residents have contacted us regarding the removal of a hedge on Tickow Lane. This is to allow the new Foul Pumping Station to be located as per the consent. The developer has confirmed that this was checked by the Ecologist prior to the removal.

Further down Tickow Lane a new fence has been put in place blocking a previous agricultural access which had been stopped up by concrete boulders by the former owner.

The developer’s health and safety audit had identified this as an area where children could enter the site and therefore be in danger. Therefore the fence has been installed. The developer has confirms that they intend to soften the aspect of the fence onto Tickow Lane with some infilling planting when they landscape the link road later in the year.

Erection of 1 bungalow with new access at 44 Garendon Road was refused P/17/1090/2 in August.

LOUGHBOROUGH TOWN CENTRE MASTER PLAN The above master plan is open for discussion and can be seen in the foyer at Charnwood Borough Council’s offices in Southfields. It shows where one way traffic could be made two-way, removal of some car parking, additional car parking and proposed housing.

REGISTER TO VOTE FORMS Charnwood will be delivering reminder forms to properties which have not responded to the annual check of voter details.

Every year the Council must check its electoral register is up to date and letters are sent to all households asking people to confirm the details or inform the Council of any changes.

Responses can be made by phone, online or by post using the pre-paid envelope provided.

Details of 16 and 17 year olds can also be added now so that they can vote as soon as they turn 18.

It is a legal requirement to respond. Having the details on the Electoral Register will: • Allow you to be able to vote • Improve your credit rating • Make it easier to access council services CHANGES TO MAKE TAXIS MORE VISIBLE Extra signs are being introduced on taxis in Charnwood to help make them clearer and more identifiable for passengers.

Under the new rules, all taxis will have CBC licence plates on the front and rear, instead of just the rear.

Hackney carriages will now also have two white oval door signs bearing their license number to make them more visible, as well as a roof sign.

Private hire vehicles will have yellow door signs and no roof sign.

Passengers should only get in a private hire vehicle when is has been booked, otherwise the driver’s insurance may be invalid and the driver could be committing an offence (driving without insurance) as well as breaching licensing conditions.

The licensing team at Charnwood recommend before getting into a vehicle that a passenger checks it is a licensed vehicle by observing and trying to remember the door sign.

Anyone wishing to report an issue with a taxi should contact the council’s licensing team by emailing licensing@charnwood.gov.uk giving as much information as possible, including the date, time, pickup and drop off points, vehicle licence plate number and details of driver.

STOPPING UP OF HIGHWAY AT TICKOW LANE, SHEPSHED I have been contacted by many residents regarding the formal notice regarding Tickow Lane which will be closed for a period of time when the new junction which will include an amended route and access into Buttercup Lane is being constructed. There will also be a widening of parts of Tickow Lane from its junction with the A512 up to the old railway bridge.

Tickow Lane will NOT be permanently closed but the area that is re-routed will remain a footpath with new landscaping.

I have raised concerns that this area could become a dumping ground for rubbish and have asked that steps are taken to allow only pedestrian access to this area.

A copy of the Notice of Order made by the Secretary of State under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 – Section 247 is available to inspect at the Town Council Offices until 3rd October.

JUNCTION IMPROVEMENTS Work has begun on safety improvements at the Iveshead Road, Charley Road and Abbey Road junction, so far with road markings and rumble strips and additional signs and reducing the speed limit to 50 mph. I reported previously that I felt the speed limit had not been lowered enough, but will monitor the accident rate which has been steadily going up.

The white lines have been repainted at the junction of Belton Street, Oakley Road, Hallamford Road and Tickow Lane and further

PRE-DRIVER DAYS

I mentioned in my last month’s which are aimed at 16/17

year olds who are thinking

about learning to drive. The

day includes an introduction to driving, issues relating to

speeding, safety, the Highway Code and a practical driving session accompanied by a

qualified driving instructor. There have been a number of these

days during the year, but this is the last one for 2017.

I attended the one in August and found it very interesting so did

the 16/17 years who attended. I

did enjoy driving around Mallory

modernised to one of their new main style branches. To enable

this to take place the Post Office will be closed from Wednesday

11th October at 17.30 and reopen

on Monday 16th October at 13.00.
