As well as answering any questions youngsters have about how to protect their precious belongings she will also be offering a free bike and scooter frame postcoding service.

Over the coming weeks, information posters will also be displayed in St Winefride’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, St. Botolph’s CE Primary School, Newcroft Primary School and Oxley Primary School.

Christian Aid Week

Shepshed History Society invited Kathleen Reynolds to be their guest speaker on June 13th, her subject to be Goose Grease and Brown Paper. So Kathleen gave a very informative as well as a very amusing account of how home made remedies favoured by our grandparents in days of old when it was too expensive to go to the doctor and were given to bring comfort and cure to your family.

This year's Christian Aid Week in May raised a total of £1,691 inclusive of Gift Aid. The five participating churches in Shepshed and Oaks in Charnwood wish to thank everyone who gave, collected and supplied homemade cakes and jam to realise this valuable sum in support of some of the world's poorest people.

Several bizarre remedies were tried but not always successful, for example neat peroxide was used for ear ache causing burst ear drums in many cases.

Children with sore throats were made to swallow a roll of raw bacon on a piece of string, the mother would then haul it up again two or three times, the idea being that the grease would ease the sore passages and the salt would kill the germs. Boils would be treated with boiling hot bottles placed over the mound to draw out the poison. And so the list of cures was endless as Kathleen continued to reel off the astonishing inventions that bought about more misery than cure to the poor patient in most cases. Indeed the evening was a great success and was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

The meeting on the 11th July will be given by Mrs Jess Jenkins who will explain the workings of the Wigston Record Library. New comers are always welcome.

Stonehurst Farm 1940's WW2 EVENT (Mountsorrel Village - LE12 7AA - On the old A6) Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th August 2017 10:30am – 16:30pm Stonehurst Farm and Charnwood wartime events present a two day combined weekend 40s event. This is a real family day out with a large number of period vehicles and displays of equipment creating a wartime atmosphere. The Farm has a good collection of animals for children as well as a Vehicle Museum. Light Snacks and drinks can be found in the Restaurant (NAFFI). Entrance to the Wartime Event is £4 Adults £2 for Schoolchildren, while to the Farm is EXTRA. Both Allied and German Groups are invited to attend this 2 Day weekend event being held at Stonehurst Family Farm. The site has a suitable field and hardcore area for the event. Thringstone House Community Centre A new era started for the well known Thringstone House Community Centre on 23rd June when, at a cabinet meeting of Leicestershire County Council, their trusteeship of the centre was formally dissolved after over 70 years.

The centre was originally founded and endowed in 1903 by the Victorian philanthropist and social reformer, Charles Booth and his family, who lived at nearby Grace Dieu Manor. The family then eventually entrusted the centre to Leicestershire County Council in 1953.

Mike Statham, present chairman of the management committee said “The county council has been a good custodian of the centre for many decades, and they have carried out many improvements and modernisations, but now, because of the severe cut backs in local authority budgets, the council felt they could no longer support or financially fund the centre.”

As a result, the centre has formed a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, recently approved by the Charity Commission, and a new board of trustees has been appointed to take over the management of the centre going forward. A business plan has been drawn up and there are new plans and ideas in the pipeline for the future development of the centre.

Mike added “As well as putting on a variety of events, like our music festival on 5 August, we currently cater for over 30 groups from pre-school toddlers to a fellowship for retired folk, and do face a challenging but exciting future.

We are determined to try to keep this much loved centre and valued community asset going for another 100 years, if we can.”

Lost For Words The Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood had great pleasure in making one of its members a Paul Harris Fellow (after our founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International in 1905).

The secret had been carefully kept for a few months, so the element of surprise, when Assistant Governor Graham Martin presented Paul Miles with his award, was evident for all to see and hear.

As the communications and press officer Paul was, for once, lost for words.

A Paul Harris award is the highest honour a Rotary Club can bestow on a Rotarian. It is awarded in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given and exemplifies the Rotary International motto "Service above Self".

Certainly Rotarian Paul embodies this motto with his dedication and service to Rotary.

Paul joined the Club in April 2011 and, since then he has chaired the Club Membership Team, been a member of the District Team and became Club President in 2015/16.

Paul’s wife, Sue, is often seen helping Paul in many aspects of his Rotary life and the Club acknowledges her not insignificant support.

Well done Paul, an award well earned and well deserved.

Understanding Charnwood’s Council Tax Excessive Spending At The Top While Vital Services Are Cut And Council Tax Increases For All

After the club business, members sat down and enjoyed their four course lunch. Unfortunately, our teller of funny stories Stan, was unable to attend the meeting.

However, a very able substitute in the guise of Gill Edmunds did a sterling job and had us all amused. After we had lunch we settled down and relaxed while our guest speaker June Edwards told us of her experiences of working in Thailand. In 1974 June was very lucky to be chosen by the company she worked for to go out to Bangkok and help oversee the local workforce build a hotel.

June worked in the finance office which was very convenient as her husband was the company accountant out there. She had up to 50 Thai ladies working for the company who she had to supervise and fortunately they had all been taught English at school.

We were regaled with a number of stories, both amusing and serious. June had to live in a hotel which was fine, but eating hotel meals all the time, although nice, became boring after a while and a plate of beans on toast would have been a welcome relief.

At the end of June's talk there were very few questions but a lot of Probus members commented on their own experiences of time spent in Thailand. A show of appreciation was followed by the President reminding members that our next meeting would be on 3rd July at the same venue.

This represents 75% of the total ARO fees, with the remaining 25% becoming payable when the election accounts are agreed with the Elections Claim Unit

The fee paid to the Returning Officer for any by-election varies according to whether or not the election is contested and the size of the relevant electorate.

The Government are totally out of context with such massive tax payer funded payment with the national min wage at £7.50 this would take a person on the min wage 1155 hours work or 31 weeks work.

On top of this taxpayers funded salary of £114,000 it seems excessive greed by all to accept such payments.

Shepshed Resident Selected To Represent Great Britain At The World Transplant Games Shepshed resident, John Mould (59), has been selected to represent Great Britain (GB) at the World Transplant Games which are being held at the end of June this year. Following development of a rare blood cancer, John had a Bone Marrow Transplant in 2011.

John was selected to represent GB following some success at the annual British Transplant Games which were most recently held in Liverpool in 2016. The World Transplant Games are held every two years and this year they are being held in Malaga, Spain.

These games run from 25th June to July 2nd. The Great Britain team has over 200 athletes and they will join over 1000 other transplant athletes from 60 countries across the globe. All competitors will have had an organ or bone marrow donated to them at some stage of their lives.

John is a member of Shepshed Running Club and Melbourne Swifts Table Tennis Club. John is competing in the 5000 metres road race, 1500 metres track race and three table tennis events. All events are competed for within age groups and John will be in the 50 to 59 age group.

Have An Adventure This Summer With Holiday Activities On Offer From climbing to canoeing, there are plenty of adventures to be had in Charnwood this summer.

Charnwood Borough Council’s holiday activity programme is back for the summer with a host of activities on offer for children, young people and families.

New activities include arts and crafts, orienteering, team building and yoga. Activities will run from Monday, July 17 to Friday, August 25, 2017 at locations across the borough including Loughborough, Birstall, Mountsorrel, Shepshed and Syston.

Interact Club Of Hind Leys College Present £409.21 Cheque For Rainbows Members of the Interact Club of Hind Leys College presented a cheque of £409.21 to Ivan Brookes, an Ambassador, for RAINBOWS, the only childrens Hospice in East Midlands. This grand sum was raised with a Quiz Night in March, and the very popular Bake Sale days at the College.

The Interact members would like to thank all those who attended the Quiz Night, as well as those who helped with the setup and running of the event. Ngaire Hall, the Rotary Interact Leader, commented that “The new intake of Interactors have made a very impressive start with their charity work”.

Every athlete selected to represent Great Britain has to raise their own funds to pay for flights, accommodation, sports kit etc.

The Rotary Club Of Shepshed Present £300 Cheque For DementiaUK The Rotary Club of Shepshed presented a Cheque for £300 to Gwyn Jones from the Leicestershire Branch of DementiaUK to help fund an Admiral Nurse for the District.

Gwyn spoke on the role of a Admiral Nurse who provides Specialist dementia support that families need, helping both the person with dementia and family members to live more positively with all the challenges this brings.

Approximately £50,000 is needed for the training and yearly salary of each Admiral Nurse. Leicestershire would like to employ one to work in the Community in partnership with the NHS, care homes, local authorities and other organisations.

Well we really are experiencing a typical English summer with sudden down pours interspersed with hot sunshine to burn the skin to a crisp! At least It’s good growing weather. It has been a busy few months for me, completing design and planting projects and planning for the autumn season. I’ve also been involved in growing and supplying plants to one of the Royal Horticultural Societies prestigious events.

The first week of June saw the inaugural RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in the grounds of the well known Derbyshire estate. The show gardens have been in the planning for at least a year in order to design, organise and install, ready for the opening day and judging. I’ve had the pleasure of growing plants for The Cruse Bereavement Care garden designed by Creative Roots, working with Miles Nurseries Ltd in Hoby this spring.

I was lucky enough to be able to visit the show to view the fruits of our labour and enjoy the rest of the show. For those of you who also attended or saw the local news broadcast you will be aware of the awful weather experienced over the first few days of the show.

Torrential rain and high winds set in early on Press Day. By the time I attended on the Saturday, the traffic issues caused by the bad weather had been dealt with and everything was running smoothly although wellies were essential.

In fact the ground was so wet that Ducks could be found frolicking in the huge puddles amongst the stalls! The weather didn’t stop me and there were some real highlights of the show: Show Gardens The show gardens were really worth seeing, The Cruse garden was awarded and silver gilt medal and there were several gold medal winning gardens to view, of which most had a noticeable wild meadow-like planting element. It was great to see so many visitors being inspired and taking away ideas for their own gardens.

Floral Marque My favourite element of any flower show is the floral marquee of which there were two at Chatsworth. Packed with specialist nurseries showing there immaculate cut flowers or intricate miniature gardens, the nurseries also sell their lovely plants. I always come home with a few plants and this time it was shrubby Salvias to grow in pots.

The ‘Great Conservatory’ New inflatable technology allowed the RHS to recreate the feel of the Great Conservatory which was built within the gardens in the 1800’s.

The original glass house covered an acre of ground and was the largest glass structure in the world. The 2017 version was an impressive size and held tropical specimen palms and trees alongside raised beds and a hanging installation.

Flower Bridge Installed by Jonathan Mosely of floral & TV fame, this covered bridge spanned the river and allowed those crossing to be enveloped in a floral masterpiece.

The walls and ceiling were covered with a lattice of willow and hanging viles containing blooms in a rainbow of colours. I true spectical!

Well Dressings I particularly enjoyed seeing the well-dressing displays as I have Derbyshire blood in my vains and remember fondly the well-dressings at Wakes week when me and my family visited Tideswell in the Peaks as a child. Well-dressings are boards decorated with flower petals and foliage to create an elaborate picture. I was please to see that the Tideswell groups had produced a fantastic display depicting Chatsworth house & the glass house. The dressings had stood up well to the awful weather thrown at them.

There was so much more to see at the show including the plant village, lifestyle trade stands and talks on all things gardening and culinary in the theatres. I hope that lots of you made it along too and that the RHS will hold the event again.

With August on the horizon, next month I’ll be looking at how to keep your garden looking at it’s best through the summer months.

Latest News From It’s the middle of a particularly hot and dry British summer and, as I write this, it is around 30 degrees outside. It’s definitely not a day to leave any animal in a car but surprisingly some people just don’t think of the awful consequences.

We have probably all, at some point or another, been aware of the campaigns and horror stories reported in the media, yet still people need reminding that dogs die in hot cars. So as the temperatures soar, here are a few things to bear in mind to ensure that your dog does not become a casualty of the heat.

Don’t leave your dog alone in a car.

If it’s very warm outside and you’re going out in the car, think very carefully about what you are going to do with your dog when you get to your destination. It can get unbearably hot in a car on a sunny day, even when it’s not that warm.

In fact, when it’s 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can soar to 47°C/117°F within a short space of time.

Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool. In a hot stuffy car, dogs can’t cool down so leaving a window open or a sunshield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. Leaving a bowl of water for them in a car is also ineffectual and water heats up quickly and often gets knocked over when a distressed dog is trying to get out of the situation. Under the Animal Welfare Act everyone has a legal duty to care for their animals and if they put an animal at risk, they could face prosecution. So, if you ever see a dog in a car on a warm day please call the Police on 999.

The biggest danger to a dog in this situation is heatstroke, which can be fatal. Some dogs are more prone to heatstroke. For example, dogs with short snouts, fatter or heavily muscled dogs and long-haired breeds, as well as very old or very young dogs are susceptible. A dog which is unable to reduce their body temperature, could develop heatstroke and here are some signs to look for: • Heavy panting • Profuse salivation • A rapid pulse • Very red gums/tongue • Lethargy • Lack of coordination • Reluctance or inability to rise after collapsing • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • A loss of consciousness in extreme circumstances.

If your dog shows any symptoms of heatstroke, move them immediately to a shaded, cool area and seek advice from your vet. Heatstroke should always be treated as an emergency.

Dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature gradually lowered.

Immediately douse your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. – You could put your dog in a shower and run cool water over

them or use a spray filled with cool water and then place your dog in the breeze of a fan.

Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water. Continue to douse them with cool water until their breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that they begin to shiver. Once you have cooled your dog down you should take them straight to the veterinary surgery for a check up.

We need to be aware however that dogs suffer heat in many other situations and we should, as pet owners, ensure that this risk is minimised. Here then are some tips for warm weather safety.

• Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if they are feeling hot.

• If you want to take your dog with you on a car journey, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly.

• If you have to leave your dog outside, you should provide a cool shady spot where they can escape from the sun at all times of the day.

• Make sure your dog always has a good supply of drinking water, in a weighted bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.

• Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day.

• Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair. Give long-coated breeds a haircut at the start of the summer and later in the season, if necessary. This also applies to those breeds that do not shed their coats – owners need to ensure the weight and thickness of coat do not add to the risk of heatstroke through correct clipping.

• Dogs need exercise - even when it is hot. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening.

Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather and avoid pavement walks as this can cause burns to the pads.

• Dogs can get sunburned too – particularly those with light-coloured noses or light-coloured fur on their ears. Ask your vet for advice on petsafe sunscreen.

We all like to enjoy the sunny weather and our dogs are no different. With a bit of planning and remembering the points above, we can ensure that the risks to the health and the lives of our dogs in the hot weather is reduced.

Of course, much of the above advice applies to other pets as well – So please do what you can to ensure the safety of all pets during this hot spell.

TESCO Bags Of Help Local Community Grant Scheme - Shepshed Town Council

Dave O'Neil (Groundwork Greater Nottingham) Brenda Snape & Jane Lennie (Shepshed Town Council) Bags of Help is Tesco’s exciting local community grant scheme where the money raised from the 5p bag charge is being used to fund thousands of local projects in communities right across the UK. Projects that bring benefit to their community will get the green light – these range from improving community buildings and outdoor spaces to buying new equipment, training coaches or volunteers and hosting community events.

Administration of the local funding is being managed by the community charity with a green heart, Groundwork Greater Nottingham, which specialises in transforming communities and the local environment for the better.

Hundreds of people are now benefiting from the improvements, there has been a play town scene with a garage and cars installed as well as a play house with magical toadstools and interactive activity panels.

The Town Council are putting through more applications for Tesco Bags of Help funding to make further improvements throughout the area.

The Town Council had very often been advised that there had been insufficient play equipment within the park. They realised quickly the huge benefits that improving the play area would make to children and their families in the community. So, the decision had been made to improve the existing area with new equipment, to enable the children to engage in role play and education, as well as social interaction.

Groundwork Greater Nottingham couldn’t have got in contact at a better time, making the team aware of the funding available for improvements and supporting them through the process.

Shepshed Town Council have taken advantage of the funding and have recently completed improvements to the children’s play area within the luscious green space that is Glenmore Park, right in the heart of Shepshed.

Your Borough Councillors can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues.

PLANNING Your Borough Cllrs have regular meetings with planning officers so that they can be kept informed of new developments on existing planning applications or new applications in the pipe line.

Keeping an eye on those applications which have been approved and checking that they are adhering to the conditions has been time consuming. The Hathern Road and the Wm Davis developments are the main two. Developers regular ask for amendments, alterations to the agreed planning application.

A SERIES OF DEMENTIAFRIENDLY WALKS These walks began on Monday 5th June in Loughborough. The sensory strolls will be led by a dementia-friendly walk leader and will start at John Storer House in Ward’s End and take in the awardwinning Queen’s Park.

Anybody interested should be at John Storer House at 11am for an 11.15am start.

The strolls have been organised by CBC in partnership with Age UK, John Storer House and Dementia Adventure. Getting out and about can stimulate the senses, something else which is important for people living with dementia.

LABOUR GROUP REPORT I try not to be political in my report, but I would like to address comments made in the Labour group report. If local residents have reported concerns to Labour Cllrs, as reported in their last month’s column, I can assure you that I have never had those issues passed on to me to sort out.

NEW JOB – CABINET SUPPORT As part of my new job I will represent Council on Severn Trent and Anglian (Northern) Flood Defence Committees, as yet I have not attended any meetings but am scheduled to attend training sessions during July and August. I shall of course raise concerns regarding the flooding around Shepshed, especially round the areas which has planning permissions.

Recycling furniture – County are laying on furniture classes to show you how to renovate old furniture.

The next class is July 8th in Fearon Hall and again on 21st October.

LED lighting was supported by the Labour and Lib/Dem councillors at County to save money and the environment, if residents have issues with any lights please contact me.

Street parking, I have not received any concerns regarding this via the Labour group. I have dealt with issues when residents have contacted me direct.

VOLUNTEERING I was pleased to receive a certificate in recognition of 23 years volunteering service at Shepshed Volunteer Centre in June. My gift was a hanging basket, which was well received as I love gardening when I have time. In does not seem like 23 years since I starting volunteering.

I am still waiting to be given the 100 signature petition (petitions have to be given in via the County Councillor) which Cllr Poole has gathered to improve a bus service so that I can present it at County.

I have had a meeting with an officer at County who deals with transport and he has agreed to speak to the bus companies to see what can be arranged.

The hedge removal on Hathern room was taken up immediately by myself and the Ward Councillor Bill Bebbington.

As County Councillor I am concerned the effect it has had on the side of the brook, which appears to be collapsing and could cause the pavement and road to collapse and have taken this up with officers.

I know that not everyone reading this column will have voted for me. But, for as long as this Parliament lasts, I am here to represent everyone and to help everyone living in Shepshed with their cases and queries.

As I said at 5.10am on the day after polling day, and as our result was announced, I love doing this job and I promise to work as hard as I can for everyone living here. I hold regular surgeries and try to attend as many local events as I can. Please do get in touch using the contact details on this page.

Regular readers will know that I have been working with local councillors and the Environment Agency to follow up the concerns raised about noise and odour which many people associate with the GLW Feeds factory.

The Environment Agency have undertaken, at our request, further noise and odour monitoring and this has revealed that further action does need to be taken in relation to odour. Residents living nearby will shortly be receiving a newsletter from the Environment Agency about this.

Some residents have been very helpfully keeping detailed notes on any issues they notice.

Residents can continue to use the Environment Agency’s free phone 24 hour incident hotline number to report any current noise or odour incidents arising from the GLW Feeds site on 0800 80 70 60.

I was delighted to attend the Hind Lesy swimming pool open day recently. The pool has been revamped with support from a whole host of local organisations and it was great to see it being so well used. Congratulations to everyone who has worked so hard on this project.

The Government has now presented its Queen’s Speech to Parliament. This sets out the Government’s legislative programme for the next session of Parliament. Due to the volume and complexity of the new laws needed to implement the UK leaving the EU this next session will last for two years. As well as eight new Bills on Brexit I was very pleased to see the Government prioritising mental health, an issue I feel very strongly about, as well as a major reform of technical education and work to ensure all schools are fairly funded.
