Bag A Baby Bargain At NCT Loughborough Nearly New Sale Savvy parents and parents-to-be in Charnwood can find top quality baby and children’s clothes, toys and equipment at the next NCT (National Childbirth Trust) Nearly New Sale.

NCT Loughborough Branch Nearly New Sale is on Sunday 17th September at Loughborough Students’ Union from 11.30am to 1.30pm (11am entry for NCT members only).

Please note that this is a change of day from previous sales, which have been held on Saturdays. Entry to the sale is £1 per adult (children free) and this money goes directly to the NCT charity. Parents can get more details online at www.nct.org.uk/lougborough.

NCT Nearly New Sales offer excellent quality used baby and children’s items, with clothing up to age 14. Baby products on the high street can be pricey but shoppers at the NCT sale can save up to 75% on the price of most goods. What’s more, the Loughborough sale is laid out by department so shoppers can easily find what they are looking for and compare similar items from different sellers without needing to go around lots of different stalls. Departments include clothing (arranged by gender and age), shoes, books, bedding, pushchairs, travel, toys and games.

Families with baby and toddler items they no longer need can ensure they go to a good home through the sale. They’ll make some cash too as sellers keep up to 70% of the proceeds. Please check the website for more information on registering as a seller and whether or not spaces are still available; spaces usually fill up well in advance of the sale.

One way in which the NCT charity is helping families locally is through the Loughborough branch’s community fund. This sees over £500 of vouchers given away for each sale to families in need, distributed through midwives, health visitors, schools, nurseries and other local organisations/professionals. The deadline for applications for the September sale is the end of August and the branch would welcome any applications. In order to apply, please email lougborough@nct.org.uk stating how many families you are applying for vouchers for and some information on their situation, for example the number and ages of children; this helps the branch to determine what value of voucher would be appropriate. Alternatively, health and social care professionals can apply to spend the money on behalf of families they work with if they may be unable to attend the sale themselves.

Michelle Hamilton, Joint branch coordinator for NCT Loughborough, says: “We have been delighted with the impact our community fund has had over the last few years and it is a wonderful way of our branch helping families on a very local level. It allows vulnerable families to spend the vouchers on the items they really want and need. Our volunteers ensure that the quality of the goods at our sales is excellent so these families and all our other shoppers can bag some real bargains. Whether you’re buying, selling or both you can be sure you’re helping to support other parents in the Loughborough area by funding NCT’s vital work.”

The popular Edible Forest Festival will return to Charnwood Forest from 15-17 September 2017 to celebrate the area’s local food and drink offering. Edible Forest 2017 will present a series of unique foodrelated events including ‘Tea in the Tower’ and ‘The Secret Gourmet’, in some of the Charnwood Forest’s most iconic settings.

Events taking place during the Edible Forest Festival 2017 include the return of the popular Tea in the Tower – a traditional, delicious tea, full of the finest local produce and served in the unique setting of the Old John Tower in the heart of Bradgate Park. Moses in his basket) where willow Chris Traill, Strategic Director for Neighbourhoods and Community Wellbeing at Charnwood Borough Council, said: “We’re proud to support the Edible Forest Festival.

It Will Soon Be Carnival Time Again Yes. It is incredible that Shepshed Lions Club 8th Annual Charity Carnival is almost upon us again. Doesn’t time fly when you are having fun!! The preparations are now being finalised by the Carnival committee for what promises to be a great day out for the family. We have a great line up for our event. The only thing we cannot control is the weather but we hope that we have a day like last year. This is the biggest event in the town and all the funds we raise are spent in the local area, supporting smaller charities and community groups. Shepshed Town Council Supports The Shepshed Lions Club It is Carnival Time again, and yet again, we have fantastic support from The Shepshed Town Council. They have generously sponsored an advert for the Carnival in the Shepshed Eye and kindly granted permission for us to use the Glenmore Park for the event free of charge. This support will help increase the amount of money raised to enable us to help those less fortunate in our community.

Lion President Bob Lilley said, “The support from Shepshed Town Council is amazing, but they support us in our other projects such as the Christmas Market in Hallcroft in December. The Town Council also supports the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders with the use of the Town Council Offices for training, and has given generous financial support to the scheme to enable us to buy new equipment.

Without this support things would be much more difficult for the club.

Their support is invaluable and I would like to thank the Town Council members for their help”.

What Happens To The Funds We Raise?

Shepshed Lions Club prides itself in the fact that every single penny we raise goes to charitable good causes. We try to support local good causes where we can and the vast majority of our funds we raise are spent in Shepshed supporting individuals, families and community groups. Below are some examples of the work we have done to support three special children and their families in our community.

Shepshed Lions Club Help Zakk Marks Zakk Marks is an 11-year-old boy who lives with his mum, Emma, and Dad, Lee in Shepshed. Since birth Zakk experienced a delay in his development and was investigated for a variety of conditions, but the family still had no answers. He remained un-diagnosed for 10yrs that made things very difficult for his parents. Zakk was eventually diagnosed in Jan 2016, with a rare genetic disorder, a mutation of his GNA01 gene, he is one of 30 cases worldwide.

At age 8yrs, as part of this condition, Zakk developed a problem with his movement and it became very difficult to keep him safe, he spend extended periods of time in hospital, sedated for his own safety due to the violent, uncontrolled, involuntary movements. With no diagnosis it was a very distressing time for him, his parents and family, not knowing what the future held for him. During this time, Zakk was bed bound, as no chair was safe for him and he couldn't travel in a car safely.

Emma and Lee’s friends set up a fundraising page to buy a special chair so that he could get out of bed and it was so successful that there was a surplus amount. With that surplus and a generous donation from the Shepshed Lions Club the family were able to buy him a Wheelchair Access Vehicle. That vehicle transformed his quality of life at that time, allowing him to go home for periods of time away from the hospital, Emma said “The donation from the Shepshed Lions made a tremendous difference to us all. Without it, Zakk would not have been able to leave the hospital or get out and about today. We will be forever very grateful for what the Shepshed Lions Club did for us, they visited us in our home

and were very supportive. We would like to thank them so much for helping us at such a distressing time in Zakk's life”

Shepshed Lions Club Helps Junior’s Journey To Happen Shepshed Lions Club helped Junior Exon, a 3 years old Shepshed boy, helped to fund surgery to enable Junior to walk. Here is what his mother, Rosie, has to say: “Our son Junior who is 3 year’s old was born with Cerebral Palsy. At the age of 2 Junior was booked in to have an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy. This involves cutting the damaged nerves in his spinal cord to remove the spasticity that caused tightness in his legs and feet.

This spasticity made it impossible for Junior to walk independently.

The operation was not funded by the NHS so it was necessary for us (the family) to raise the £60,000 ourselves so we embarked on “Junior’s Journey”, and set about fundraising. The problem was we only had 9 months to raise the money, and this was a massive task. I approached Shepshed Lions Club in the hope they might help a little towards “Junior’s Journey”. I was not expecting a lot, as there are a lot of children in need of help. However, I was surprised ad delighted when Shepshed Lions Club donated £2000, which made an absolutely massive amount of difference, not only by the donation alone but also by publicly sharing “Juniors Journey” so that it touched the hearts of others who also approached me wanting to help. We will always be forever grateful for the Lions help for changing our son’s life. In June 2016 our son Junior walked independently across our front lounge. If it wasn’t for Shepshed Lions Club this would never have been possible! Thank you Shepshed Lions from the bottom of our hearts.”

Alfie Smith And His New Bed! Alfie is a little boy who lives in Shepshed with his parents, Fay and Josh and now his new- born sister Isla. Alfie was born with cerebral palsy, global developmental delay and a congenital heart defect. This resulting in Alfie suffering from muscle spasms during the night as a result of the cerebral palsy and also having no danger awareness due to the developmental delay resulting in him posing a risk to himself.

This resulted in Alfie falling out of bed regularly with a danger of Alfie injuring himself. It was obvious that it was necessary to buy a bed that would keep Alfie safe at night.

Fay and Josh researched specialist beds to find a bed that would keep Alfie safe and found the perfect bed to achieve that aim. There was one major obstacle for Fay and Josh, the bed was very expensive and beyond their means. This did not deter them as they were determined to do the best for Alfie, so they set about fundraising to buy the bed. They started their fundraising project called ‘Action for Alfie’ and publicised what they were doing. When Shepshed Lions Club heard about this they visited Alfie and his parents who explained what they were trying to achieve.

The Lions told them to buy the bed for Alfie and they would pay for it.

On a recent follow-up visit by Shepshed Lions Club Fay and Josh said that without the bed, Alfie’s, and their lives, would be much more difficult. The changes that the provision of the bed had made to them were huge. They could put Alfie to bed at night knowing he would be safe and not fall out of the bed, or climb out of it. This mad sure that he did not add to his already serious health issues. Alfie’s mother, Fay, said “We could not believe the quick response of Shepshed Lions Club to our appeal. It was a fantastic boost for us and made all of ours lives better. It also enabled us to use the additional funds we raised to provide additional physiotherapy for Alfie. We cannot thank the Lions enough”.

There are many other good causes that have been supported by Shepshed Lions Club for over 30 years, but it is very important to remember that without the support of the fantastic community of Shepshed we would not be able to help the people who need it. The President and members of Shepshed Lions Club would like to say a massive “Thank you” to each and every one of you who have supported our club in our fund-raising activities.

Shepshed Lions Club Annual Senior Citizen’s Lunch For the fifth successive year Shepshed Lions Club will be hosting a lunch for 65 Senior Citizens at the Glenmore Centre on Saturday 21st October 2017. This popular event hopes to allow those Senior Citizen’s who do not get out of their homes to meet friend’s old and new. A three course lunch is prepared and cooked by members of Shepshed Lions Club includes drinks, music, a raffle and Bingo by way of entertainment.

This year’s event has already identified the guests who will be invited this year, including 20 new guests who have never attended the event before. We would like to invite more guests but this is impossible because of Health and Safety concerns, space in the Glenmore Centre and oven space to cook the food in. We are sorry if you are not invited to this year’s event.

Shepshed Lions Club 3rd Annual Christmas Market We know it is early to start thinking about Christmas but plans are being made for Shepshed Lions Club 3rd Annual Christmas Market to be held on Sunday 17th December 2017 in The Hallcroft, Shepshed.

The market will open at 12.30 until late afternoon. This popular event attracts a wide range of stalls selling those special little gifts for friend’s and family. The number of stalls is strictly limited due to space but there are still some available at only £25 each. There is a stipulation that your stall is decorated to reflect the Christmas Season and helps create a festive atmosphere. Shepshed Lions Club Is Looking For New Members Shepshed Lions Club has been an important part of the community for the last thirty years, and this year is the Centenary of the organisation, Lions Clubs International. The Motto of the Lions is “We Serve”, and Shepshed Lions Club serves this community. The members meet at Livio’s Restaurant on the first Monday of every month unless it is a Bank Holiday, when the meeting takes place on the second Monday of the month. Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are looking for new members to join the successful team currently working in our local communities. The Responders work in support of East Midlands Ambulance Service and patients, their relatives and friends when they are taken ill. They respond to a wide range of incidents including Cardiac Arrests, Heart Attacks, Angina Attacks, Diabetic emergencies, Stroke, fitting and other incidents. Visit the team in the First Aid tent at the Carnival. You can try your hand at giving CPR to one of the mannequins in the tent, or just go and say hello to the team.

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders have now got a new car, show in the above photo. The previous car had come to the end of the lease period and a new Skoda Citigo is now in use by the team. East Midlands Ambulance Service provides the car to the team in support of our service to the community. Whilst the car does not have the usual Ambulance Service markings on it is still an asset to our team.

Deadline For Grants To Support Business Growth In Charnwood Bids are once again being sought for grants which can support jobs and business growth in Charnwood.

The borough council is accepting applications for grants which can be used for local initiatives which support economic growth. They could include events or schemes which support businesses through networking, marketing, apprenticeships and more.

The grants often help local businesses through another organisation. For example, a grant helped a community interest company (CIC) fund a feasibility study looking to open a hub for creative businesses in Loughborough and another supported marketing for the town centre.

The growth support grants are available to a number of organisations including non-profit making organisations, charities, educational establishments and

enterprises, community interest companies and town and parish councils.

The next deadline for applications is August 24, 2017. Grants are available for up to 50 per cent of the total cost of a project.

Art Class Project- Polyptych As a group we took a photograph of St Botolphs Church in Shepshed. We then enlarged the photo and cut it up into 16 pieces. Each piece, along with an A4 sized canvas was given to any member of the club wishing to take part and some members completed more than one section. Some of us used acrylics, others watercolours. Once the canvasses were complete we then mounted them onto a large board, approximately 1 metre by 1 and ½ metres. The contributors were: Aileen, Andrea, Bruce, Christine, Jill, Margaret, Mike, Norman, Ron, Tony and Wendy. The picture will be available to view at the Shepshed library for a couple weeks, before it takes up its permanent position in the hall of the council offices.

Annual Challenge Nets Alex’s Wish Over £6,500 An annual charity trek undertaken by holistic wellbeing company Wellbeing4Life and 18 of their clients has netted local charity Alex’s Wish over £6,500.

The trek took in the Ullswater Way… plus some additional peaks and challenges. Elain Crewe of Wellbeing4Life commented on the challenge saying, “This is the second year that we have trekked for Alex’s Wish. Last year we did the Yorkshire Three Peaks and this year the Ullswater Way with some additions. Basically we are an ambitious lot and we wanted a few more peaks and challenges thrown in for good measure!”

The 30 mile trek took the team of 18 just over 16 hours to complete

and saw them tackle over 1,400m of ascents – higher than Ben Nevis! Elain added, “We worked with the same superb guide as last year – Ed Docwra of Mountain Munchkins. Ed asked us what we wanted and then adapted the Ullswater Way to suit us and give us the challenge that we were all up for! We had an amazing day and to have raised almost double what we did last year is a fabulous feeling. Plans are already being made for 2018!”

Zoe Edwards of Alex’s Wish took part in the event. Commenting on the trek Zoe said, “It was a great day. We walked through forests, around lakes, saw waterfalls and tackled a few hills too! The scenery was beautiful and the company was great. We are so grateful to Elain, Wellbeing4Life and everyone who took part and we can’t wait to see what the trek is going to be for next year.”

Shepshed History Society On July 11th the Shepshed History Society was given a very interesting talk by Mrs Jess Jenkins of the Wigston Record Library. This very important library in Leicestershire was initially set up not only to record local history but to store all manner of deeds and documents relating to our own history and that of Rutland also, many of which date back to the 11th century. Members of the public are very important as they still continue today to contribute important documents acquired over the years so adding to the vast archives.

Mrs Jenkins read out many documents of intriguing interest as the evening progressed and it gave the society a chance to appreciate what the library is doing in order to preserve our heritage. She concluded by saying that members of the public are welcome to browse through these archives free of charge but an appointment would have to be made first.

The Societies' August meeting will be a closed one when members will be taken on a canal trip which will include lunch at the Plough Inn, Normanton on Soar.

Greenthumb’s Campaign To Support Rainbows

Thank You All So Much!

Serenade, Shepshed’s ladies community choir had a sell-out audience for their summer concert, ‘Colours of Sound’. The concert, held on July 8th at Shepshed High school was a roaring success, raising well over £1700 for our 2017 charities Shepshed Toy Library and STEPS. As well as songs we had poetry readings and also a fabulous rendition of ‘The Pink Panther’ theme by our pianist Ness. We were also accompanied by our guest choir from Newcroft Primary School who were a smash hit with the audience, who got into the party spirit, singing along to some of the more well-known songs such as Hi Ho Silver Lining and Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini!

We are currently having a break for the summer before our AGM on September 11th, with our first sessions for the Autumn starting on September 18th. We will then start preparing for our winter/Christmas concert (dates and venue TBA).

Fancy joining us? We’re always happy to welcome new members, 16 years and above, so why not come along to Shepshed High School where we meet every Monday evening during term time at 7.30 pm. No auditions or tests, just come along and sing! It’s just £3 per session and this includes refreshments of tea, coffee or squash and biscuits as well as music.

With just a few weeks to go before the first meeting of the 2017/2018 season on Tuesday, 12th September the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club have arranged to hold their annual exhibition of work at Shepshed Library from Tuesday 29th August until Tuesday 12th September.

Among the photographs on show will be many that appeared in the club for the first time during the 2016/2017 season and with the camera club becoming more active within the community over recent times there will be pictures that hopefully will appeal to all who take time out to have a look.

The club meets on most Tuesday evenings between early September and early June, mostly at Shepshed Council Offices in Charnwood Road, gathering at 7.30 pm for a 7.45 pm start and visitors/prospective members are welcome to attend up to four meetings before deciding whether to take up membership.

The Leicestershire West branch of GreenThumb – the lawn care experts – has entered into a fundraising partnership to support Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

Rainbows, based in Loughborough, is the only hospice of its kind in the East Midlands.

It’s a place where life-limited children and their families can find care and support. Their incredible team of people helps relieve symptoms, improves quality of life, supports parents and siblings through their bereavements, and cares for children until the end.

With effect from August 2017, GreenThumb Leicestershire West will be making a donation of £10 for every new customer who responds to their promotion and commences a programme of lawn treatments. The promotion will run through to Spring 2018 and is featured on leaflets and in advertising.

Directors Martin and Michelle Williams said “We have made donations to Rainbows as individuals over the years, but our new promotion enables us to actively raise a significant amount of money for this amazing cause.

There’s also a very personal dimension to our support – our daughter, Becky, worked as a student at Rainbows many years ago. She was so inspired by her experience there that she decided to pursue a career in children’s medicine. She’s is now a Paediatrician with a special interest in children’s Palliative care.”

Martin Williams continued: “Rainbows is dependent upon public donations and does a magnificent job. We are delighted to be one of their fundraising partners.”

Shepshed WI As part of a set of challenges set by the Leics.and Rutland Federation, Shepshed WI has planted a cherry tree in the Volunteer Centre Community Garden as a gift and look forward to following the tree’s progress as it grows. Members have recently enjoyed a boat trip from Barrow followed by lunch and a visit to Shepshed Watermill. Two members also enjoyed joining Kegworth WI when they celebrated their 95th birthday. The next meeting will be on 3rd August when the speaker will be Steve West who will be giving an insight into how some people manage their life with a stammer. The meeting will take place at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed at 7.30 pm.

New Trail Celebrates History Of Arts & Crafts Movement In Leicestershire

Competition To Find Outstanding Building Design In Charnwood The search is on for high-quality building design as the borough council launches the Charnwood Design Awards 2017. The awards recognise the excellent work of building owners, agents and contractors on a wide range of developments and conservation projects in the borough.

The Charnwood Design Awards encourage and recognise high standards of design in the built environment and demonstrate how the Council’s vision for high-quality design, as set out in the Core Strategy which guides development in Charnwood, is being met. There are five categories and projects must have been completed after July 1, 2015.

The categories are:

Trail featured in new guide, highlighting impact of Leicesterborn Ernest Gimson on local architecture including the famous Stoneywell Cottage A new trail has been developed to mark the history of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Leicestershire.

The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international ideology in the decorative and fine arts, formed by a group of artists, designers and social campaigners in the late 19th century. It flourished in Europe and America between 1880-1910, focused on a return to well-made, handcrated goods and was one of the most important and influential styles of the 20th century.

Leicester-born architect and designer, Ernest Gimson was one of the leading lights in this style and together with family members and colleagues, was responsible for some of the most iconic architecture in Leicestershire including Abbey Pumping Station, Leicester Town Hall, The Belmont Hotel, New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Charnwood Museum and Stoneywell Cottage, acquired and re-opened by the National Trust in 2013.

These buildings and more are featured as part of a themed trail for visitors to the city and county, and are presented in a new guide, produced by Leicestershire Promotions in partnership with Charnwood Borough Council and the National Trust. The guide provides visitors with highlights of a number of sites and places to visit in Leicestershire, related to the Arts and Crafts Movement.

The free guide will be available from visitor centres, tourist information centres, visitor attractions and museums across the city and county. Copies can also be downloaded from www. goleicestershire.com/artsandcrafts Martin Peters, Chief Executive of Leicestershire Promotions said: “The Arts and Craft Movement gained an international reputation but has a truly British origin, with Leicestershire and locally-born Ernest Gimson pivotal to its development. The opening and subsequent success of Gimson’s Stoneywell Cottage in Charnwood has further raised the profile of the Arts and Crafts Movement locally.

We continue to vary our walks and adjust them according to the needs of the group each time we meet. One very wet day 25 souls joined us! Even on a very hot day once again 25 came along, this walk was planned to include a few sheltered areas out of the sun.

We would like to thank all of you who have joined us and helped to make it a very enjoyable experience for us all.

Not many walkers request the shorter walks, however these are always on offer for those who feel they might find the hour walk too long.

There is an opportunity to learn the craft yourself. Classes are being held at Groby Village Hall LE6 0DJ on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings. We begin again on September 5th/6th and run for 30 weeks. You are welcome to attend a taster session where you will be introduced to the craft. Basic equipment may be borrowed for the first few weeks; the Tutor has Beginners Kits for sale if required.

You may already be a lacemaker and looking for further help or join an established group for social contact. Groby Lace Class has been running for over 15 years, has limited vacancies on Tuesday evenings and space for 4 new members on a Wednesday morning.

Getting The Best From Your Garden Well the busy gardening year is in full swing and we’ve certainly had good growing weather with the sunny weeks followed by days of April showers! The unpredictable weather can cause us gardeners and green-finger want-to-be’s a few problems; when to water, what to feed when and how to keep the fruits of our labours looking at their best.

I avoid adding planting up clients gardens in the peak summer months as the plants can really struggle to establish in the hot, dry weather. The borders planted in the spring will need some care to help the plants establish in their first season and planted containers will need tendering to keep them flowering well. So this month I’m looking at how and when to water and feed the garden during the summer.

Watering the garden Many people think they are just not green-fingered but their plant failures are often down to poor watering initially. When plants are grown on a nursery they’re usually watered on a daily basis to a set regime. Once the plants make their way to our gardens they are in a really different environment and without good watering they simply can’t adjust to their new home.

I always water new plants really well before they are planted to ensure that the whole of the root system is wet through, usually by giving the pot a couple of minutes

in a bucket of water. Once planted it then needs another good soak to wet the surrounding soil and settle it in. The watering required after planting will depend very much on the plant variety, size, situation and the soil condition. I always say it’s better to thoroughly water a plant occasionally rather than sprinkle over a little water regularly. So a good soak a couple of times a week during the summer months is a good starting point. I check plants regularly for signs of wilt and leaf drop.

Watering in the evening or the early morning is best so that the water has chance to penetrate deep down to the roots before the midday sun has a chance to evaporate it from the surface. Don’t assume that a rain shower will be sufficient to thoroughly water a plant in the ground or in a pot.

There are automatic watering systems on the market designed to irrigate pots, baskets, greenhouses etc. I have used them very successfully in gardens to keep them looking at their best.

Sprinklers are really useful too, for borders and veg plots to give a long slow soaking to the ground.

Feeding plants during Summer To make the most of baskets, pots and borders a regular feed is useful to prolong flowering, fruiting and growth. I use the following:

Tomato food - great for lots of plants during the summer as its main ingredient is Potassium – which stimulates flower and fruit growth, so it’s perfect not only for fruiting crops like tomatoes & peppers but hanging baskets, pots and bedding too. I also use it to give shrubs a boost if they are reluctant to flower.

Growmore or Fish Blood and Bone are great as a general purpose feed. I use Growmore every time I plant vegetables, shrubs, perennials etc. to give the plant an initial boost.

Beware that Chicken manure pellets can be high in Nitrogen which produces very leafy plants at the expense of flowers.

Controlled release granules give a long-term balanced feed throughout the summer. I use it in all of my containers.

Finally I use a general purpose liquid feed like Miracle Grow for young plants in the greenhouse before they are planted out in to the garden to keep them growing strongly in their pots.

With a good watering and feeding regime and a little deadheading a garden can look fabulous all summer long. Next month I’ll be looking at the best bulbs for autumn planting like Daffodils, Tulips and Alliums which will be available in Nurseries and Garden Centres soon.

Latest News From Felis Catus American pet behaviourist Warren Eckstein said “In the beginning, God created man, but seeing him so feeble He gave him the cat.”

Cats are currently the most popular pet in the world and evidence suggests they were living alongside humans by 6000BC, possibly earlier.

Thought to be incarnations of gods, cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt and killing a cat was punishable by death. Egyptians shaved their eyebrows as a sign of mourning a cat’s death and mourned for months. In the ancient Egyptian city of Bubastis there are about three hundred thousand mummified cats in tombs.

By 3700BC cats were a popular companion animal in Egypt and gained even more favour in their role as pest control agents on ships and in grain stores. It is said they saved the Egyptians from starvation by killing vermin in granaries.

However cats were not always venerated. To the superstitious minds of the Middle Ages cats were thought to possess supernatural powers with involvement in witchcraft. The 1563 Witchcraft Act associated keeping cats with wickedness which resulted in the execution of innumerable cats and their owners.

As cat owners know, cats are not subservient which was another trait resulting in their persecution at this time. It was considered their aloofness violated the biblical view that humans should have dominion over animals. Consequently cats suffered considerable torment and tyranny at the hands of the Christian Church.

Fortunately the popularity of cats returned and by the Victorian era they were secure in the role of the beloved household pets that continues today.

At the risk of upsetting dog-lovers, American writer and producer, Jeff Valdez, said “Cats are smarter than dogs, you can’t get eight cats to pull a sledge through snow” and all cat owners know “dogs have masters, cats have servants”.

According to animal behaviourists dogs have become dependent on humans and should humans cease to exist they would find it difficult to survive. However as most cats still retain some of their wildness and hunting skills they would have no problem surviving without us.

Cats have been the preferred pet of many famous people including

actors, authors, artists and scientists.

Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat-flap for his moggies. Aldous Huxley said “If you want to write, keep cats” and genius Leonardo da Vinci said “The smallest feline is a masterpiece”.

Cats have infiltrated many aspects of our daily lives and are often featured in commercial art and design imagery such as greetings cards, textiles and ornaments. How such a small, relatively insignificant animal can be so popular is quite a mystery, but mystery is probably the allure of cats. Sir Walter Scott agrees. He said “Cats are mysterious folk. There is more passing in their minds than we are aware of”.

Currently the UK cat population is around 11.6 million which animal welfare organisations regard as a crisis.

According to the charity ‘Cats Protection’ a single female cat can have 25,000 descendants within five years.

The importance of neutering both male and female cats cannot be overestimated.

Rescue centres are full of strays and abandoned cats and kittens. It is a myth that a female cat should have ‘just one litter’ and as they can go into heat at four months old it is essential they are spayed by that age. It is also crucial that male cats are neutered. Not only does neutering males prevent unwanted kittens but makes fighting less likely as well as spraying or contracting Feline Aids (FIV).

How Can You Help?

Kittens are growing babies who need more nutrients than their adult counterparts but pregnant and lactating cats can also benefit from the extra nutrition in kitten food.

I am one of thirty-five volunteer cat/ kitten fosterers for RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre and we are all kept busy throughout the year. Cats of all ages and circumstances are fostered for varying lengths of time. The number of abandoned pregnant cats or those with tiny kittens is heartbreaking and so unnecessary if only owners were more responsible.

If fostering isn’t a possible commitment for you, kitten food is continually required at Woodside and donations are always welcome.

Staff And Customers Of Pets At Home Do It Again And Raise An Incredible £2,012.89 For Woodside Animal Centre Leicester is home to some of the biggest animal lovers in England, almost £5,000 has been raised for local rescue centres as a part of a summer fundraising drive for pets in need.

For four weeks, members of the local community donated to help rescue pets in need by purchasing a ‘Scratch and Match’ card in Leicester Pets At Home stores for the Support Adoption For Pets Summer Fundraising Drive, putting themselves in with a chance of winning one of 200,000 prizes and in turn donating £1 to the charity.

Over 430 Pets At Home stores took part in the national fundraiser across the UK, raising an impressive total of £545,486.51. The money has been granted to over 350 pet rescue stores across the country, helping to support the animals within their care.

Amy Wilson, Fundraising Manager from Support Adoption For Pets, said: “Fundraising drives like this are vital to keeping local rescue centres open across the UK, and it’s great that we can continue to support rescue centres who work so hard to rehome pets in across the East Midlands.”

Money raised within the Leicester Fosse Park and St Georges Retail Park Pets at Home stores will be supporting RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre, who have been overwhelmed by the support given to the Summer Fundraising Drive from the local community.

Your Borough Councillors can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues.

Planning Your Borough Councillors still have concerns about the planning application off Tickow Lane, due to the developer asking for trees and hedges be removed (P/17/0875/2) even though Cllr Radford managed to get Tree Preservation Orders (TPO’s) on the majority of the trees on site some years ago. Some of these trees have been removed even with TPO’s on them. Your Borough Cllrs are not sure just how we can safe guard trees and hedges when developers appear to do just what they like without repercussion.

Another concern we have is due to the removal of the hedge on Hathern Road by Persimmon homes, the bank of the brook is now unstable and could cause serious problems in the future.

This matter is being taken up by Cllr Bebbington as Ward Cllr and Cllr Radford in her capacity as County Councillor.

Meeting With Leader Of The Council And Cabinet Lead Member For Landlord Services And Officers Your Borough Councillors had a meeting with the above to discuss their concerns regarding the lack of support to tenants/ privately owned properties, when they have neighbours/tenants in Council owned properties causing problems and nothing appears to be getting done. As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council.

Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc.

New ‘Report It’ On Line Form I recently reported a problem using the new online “Report It” form available on the County Council website as part of our Transformation Programme.

This programme has over 20 projects being designed and implemented to find different ways of providing many council services more effectively and yes, more efficiently. As the Council’s budget gets smaller, so the number of staff being employed is shrinking, and the council has had to make some major changes.

One of these projects is to provide better ways for some residents to contact council departments, such as highways.

As many more people now have improved broadband and smartphone access, the County Council website has been updated to be simpler and more customer oriented, with less ‘council speak’ . One of the links from the www.leicestershire. gov.uk home page is for Road and travel, and under the Road maintenance heading you can click on Report a road problem, to access the online Report It form.

You can report most types of problems with roads or pavements online, this includes: • Potholes • Grass cutting • Overgrown trees or hedges • Blocked drains or faulty manhole covers • Damaged to road signs • Problems with street lights After selecting the type of problem, you can now mark the position of the problem on a map, leave descriptive comments, and can even add photos, if you wish. If you provide your email address, then you will receive a reference number which can be used when following up. You will

then receive a report giving an approximate time for a resolution or inspection by highways engineers.

Much of this can also be provided to the highway customer services team by telephone 0116 305 0001, except for marking the exact location on a map or adding any photos. However councillors are being encouraged to let residents know about this new, improved facility.

Planning Land at Shepshed Quarry, Clay Pit and Landfill Site, Ashby Road, Shepshed (2017/CM/0104/LCC and 2017/VOCM/0103/LCC) was approved at the Development Control meeting on 13th July. There were a number of conditions as part of the approval.

Hours of working and that the operator shall retain and maintain all perimeter hedgerows and fences and protect the same from damage. Noise levels, wheel washing, surface drainage. You can read the full approval by quoting the above application number on the county web site.

Everyone has mental health and by launching the ‘Healthier in Mind’ conversation LPT want to engage as many local people as possible to find out what they think should be the local priorities to improve mental health support.

This will form the basis of a mental health strategy that everyone contributes to.

There are three simple questions LPT would like you to answer. All the responses to the questions will be collected together and used to help shape how services are changed for the better.

In order to appreciate current events it is always helpful to understand our history. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Civil War Exhibition which is on at the Old Rectory Museum in Loughborough. This is a fascinating period of history and the Midlands was the scene of

some of the most dramatic events and battles. If you have some time one Saturday the exhibition is open 11am-3pm until October and I would really recommend it.

In recent days I’ve also been meeting with the Group Managing Director at Shepshed-based BOAL. We had a good discussion about BOAL’s business, current and likely future challenges and the impact of recent legislation.

I do try to visit as many local businesses as I can as well as hold business-focused events so if I haven’t visited your business or heard about your success please do get in touch.

I also visited Nottingham Community Housing Association’s Bridge Street accommodation. It was a pleasure to meet Michelle, her team of support workers and to meet current and past tenants and hear about their experiences. I was also fortunate enough to have a quick look at their allotment nearby and to appreciate all the hard work which everyone is putting in. Thank you to everyone at Bridge Street for making me so welcome.

CCTV For Shepshed Following a very heated discussion at Shepshed Town Full Council meeting on Wednesday 12th July when the Conservative Town Councillors, Bill Bebbington, Denis Forster, Peter Grainger, Christine Radford, John Savage and Joan Tassell together with the UKIP Councillor Diane Horn won the vote to pay maintenance costs for CCTV cameras which could be installed in the centre of Shepshed. This was carried by one vote as ALL the Labour Councillors voted AGAINST having the cost of maintaining CCTV cameras paid by STC. If the Council did not take on this cost Shepshed would not be able to have CCTV. Councillors Draycott, Ewing and Lennie were also against the provision of the cameras themselves even though CBC is giving the Town Team this grant.

The provision of CCTV cameras is being funded by what remains of the Grant provided by Charnwood Borough Council to the Town Team for shop front improvements in the town centre. Cllr Tassell who represents the Town Council on the Town Team has worked tirelessly with officers from Charnwood to get this money re-allocated to help cover the cost of CCTV cameras. These cameras will be monitored by Charnwood 24/7 and all that was being asked of the Town Council was to fund the maintenance and service costs

for the 5 cameras at a cost of less than £2,000 per annum for all 5.

This equates to less than 50p per household per year. The Labour group were adamant that this was unaffordable.

All the Labour Councillors Raymond Draycott, Robert Ewing, Jane Lennie, Claire Poole, Jon Poole and Myriam Roberts , who were at this meeting VOTED AGAINST spending this money, even though the Town Team had decided that this was what was needed for the Town Centre to help encourage business into the town and for residents to use the town centre more safely. Cllr Lennie suggested that we ask the Town Team to reconsider, but she had previously said that Councillors should not interfere in what outside bodies do.

Cllr Tassell together with the Clerk to the Town Council, the camera providers (ADT) and the Police have determined the best positions for these cameras to cover the centre of Shepshed.

CCTV cameras were looked at a number of years ago, but the cost then was much higher and we had not secured the 24/7 coverage that Charnwood can give us now.

We still cannot understand why Labour do not want to spend this money to help cut and detect crime in Shepshed.

There is just space to mention the Shepshed Lions Annual Charity Carnival which takes place on Glenmore Park on August Bank Holiday Monday from 11.45am.

Charnwood Arts Big Knitting Group's Big Poppy Project To mark the anniversary of the end of WW1 the group aim to knit and crochet 1000 poppies to represent the fallen from the Charnwood area.
