Jumbo Jumble Sale At Shepshed It’s that time of year again when the people of St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed ask you to ‘Delve in your drawers, Search your sheds, Clean out your cupboards, Wade in your wardrobes and Attack the attic’. Bric-a-brac, ‘kitchenalia’, books, clothes, tools, china and glass are all acceptable providing they are in good condition.

Once again your unwanted goods are required to sell at their Jumbo Jumble Sale to be held in the Church Hall, Church Gate from 10.00am until 1.00pm on Saturday 22nd October. Items may be brought to the hall on the previous day (Friday 21st) between 2.00pm and 4.00pm, and from 6.30pm until 7.30pm.

Refreshments will be available, and fun can be had trying on in the nearly new ‘department’, where a mirror will be placed for use. It is planned to have a children’s section with good condition clothes, buggies, car seats, high-chairs, toys etc..

This is the fourth such event, and in the past it has attracted people from quite a distance. The organisers have been delighted both by the quality of the goods donated for sale, the numbers who came, and the financial results. It is hoped that this year’s event will be just as successful.

Dragon’s Den Will Offer Advice On Securing Cash Grants For Projects

Community Groups Urged To Apply For Grants A group that received £10,000 from a community grant scheme is urging others to apply for the latest round of funding.

A ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event is coming to Charnwood to offer local people advice on how to secure funding for projects.

Loughborough-based group, the Beacon Christian Fellowship received £10,000 from Charnwood Borough Council for a kitchen upgrade and a disabledaccess lift.

David Knott is a member of the Beacon Christian Fellowship. He applied for the funding and said: “Over the last five years we’ve been building an extension so our community can grow and develop.

50 children did. They attended the Churches Together in Shepshed Holiday Club held at Christchurch Methodist Church last month.

“The money will go towards facilities which means we can expand into new areas and it will help with improving our soup kitchen. I found the contact and involvement from the council’s grants team was a great help during the process. The website also had a lot of useful information for completing the application. I’d definitely recommend applying for a grant and we’ll certainly be doing so again in the future, now we know the opportunities available to us.”

Councillor Jonathan Morgan, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion, said: “Our grants have helped many groups and individuals and we want to see that continue as they do a lot to support our local community.

“I would encourage people to apply, but also help us by providing as much information as possible in your application. Some bids miss out because they lack detail, so take your time.”

New bids are being taken for the following grants: Loughborough Community Grant, deadline September 20, 2016 - provides up to £2,000 for voluntary sector and community organisations’ and projects, which deliver activities with community benefits in Loughborough. These grants can cover running costs (for up to one year) or one-off equipment costs.

Community Development Grant, deadline September 22, 2016 - provides up to £10,000 for organisations’ currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood, including running costs (for up to one year), and one off contributions for equipment costs.

Community groups and individuals will be given the chance to pitch their projects to a panel of experts and receive feedback on their ideas.

Did you see the snow that fell in Shepshed, this August?

The day has been organised by Charnwood Borough Council and will be attended by big businesses such as BBC Children in Need, The Big Lottery Fund and Tesco.

This year’s theme was a Polar expedition and was based at the North Pole.

The event will be held on Wednesday, October 5 at John Storer House, Loughborough.

Each group or individual will be given a time slot to attend and make their pitch.

The snow fell inside the church, so much so that an igloo could be built!

There will be information about suitable grants on offer, plus tips and advice on how to write a funding application.

The aim of this year’s Holiday Club was to introduce the children to some of the characters from the Bible, and to invite them to be part of God’s big expedition.

Councillor Jonathan Morgan, Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion said: “We’re always keen to support local groups and individuals as their work does so much for our community.

Each day the children began together, playing games, singing songs and listening to a Bible story.

They then split into their 3 groups, depending on age. The Huskies (Foundation to Year 2), Polar Bear (Year 3 & 4) and Caribou (Year 5 & 6) for an hour of learning, bible stories, craft, games and plenty of fun.

They then returned together for the next episode on the ongoing drama “The Ice Adventure’, a story of three adventurers battling through the polar wastes to deliver a vital message to the scientist Yvonne Von Evian, stationed beyond the snowy plains, across the glacier and around the mountain, which was performed each day by members of the team.

“That’s why we wanted to give people the opportunity to meet the experts and get some valuable advice on how to secure funding so they will continue to grow.

The week ended with a barbeque and more fun and games in the sunshine.

“This event is a chance to find out exactly what big funding bodies are looking for and for people to promote the great work they do.”

We are extremely blessed in Shepshed to have a fantastic group of volunteers to help coordinate, plan and run these events.

Groups and individuals interested in attending will need to submit a brief project outline (no more than 500 words) by Friday, September 16.

Free Sessions Aim To Help Prevent Falls Charnwood Borough Council is running a series of courses to help prevent falls in older people. The Falls and Management of Exercise (FaME) sessions offer free seated exercises which aim to improve balance, coordination and mobility in people over the age of 60.

The effect of the exercises will be analysed and the results used to improve falls prevention work in the future. The FaME programme is being delivered in partnership with local authorities across Leicestershire. All courses are free and will run for 24 weeks.

PACT MEETING A Shepshed Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting will be held Thursday 29th September.

There are currently three sessions on offer in Charnwood: Roseberry St Peters Community Centre, Loughborough, Thursdays 12-1.30pm John Storer House, Loughborough, Thursdays 12-1.30pm

Shepshed History Society

British Transplant Games

During the summer months Shepshed History Society had two very enjoyable meetings when in July Mr Mike Riley came and gave an excellent insight into the origins of the Great Central Railway. Primarily to carry passengers, this proved not to be a great success, so as time went on it became more of a freight railway network carrying coal and other commodities to all manner of towns and cities. Numerous slides were shown of the railway through the decades and finally Mr Riley explained in great lengths about how this forgotten empire came to the fore in the now famous Great Central Railway Museum. A momentous venture which has restored vast amounts of engines and machinery and now hosts countless events on the now partially restored track, which all being well is destined to go as far as Nottingham in the fulsome of time.

Shepshed resident John Mould (58) has taken part in the recent British Transplant Games. John had a bone marrow transplant in 2011. This year’s Games were held in Liverpool from July 28th to 31st when there were over 900 competitors aged between 3 and 89.

August the 9th the Society was taken on a private tour of Melbourne Hall and gardens.

In brilliant weather the group enjoyed exploring the spectacular landscape gardens and then a conducted tour was given round the hall. Now home to Lord and Lady Ralph Kerr, it has many centuries of important history to relate. It was formally home to the Victorian Prime Minister William Lamb, who as 2nd Viscount Melbourne gave his name to the city of Melbourne in Australia.

The September meeting to be held on the 13th will be given by Mr Van Ments, the subject to be Japanese Netsuke’s, everyone welcome as always.

Shepshed Town Council Submit Planning Application Shepshed Town Council has submitted an application to Charnwood Borough Council for the release of S106 Monies to cover the cost of installing Parkour Phase I on Oakley Road Playing Fields.

If everything goes according to plan and weather permitting, the site should be installed in time for the October Half Term School Break.

Serenade News Monday evenings now find me doing something I haven’t done since school days. It is nothing to do with Latin verbs or simultaneous equations; it is singing in a group of female voices. This is because I have recently joined Serenade, the Women’s Community Choir in Shepshed where I was welcomed with open arms by everyone there.

I looked up the word “community” in the Thesaurus and found “comradeship, fellowship, union, affiliation, joined, mutual and social” all of which go part of the way to describe the group. I have found encouragement, support and a feeling of concern by all for all. The group is democratic but also administered with military precision!

At Serenade we have just performed the main summer concerts at Shepshed High School and also at Thorp Acre Church, Loughborough. We presented “Serenade Sings through the Decades” which included a mixture of music written between the 1900s and the “twenty-tens”.

We had full chorus numbers, solos, duets and small group songs and along the way paid homage to Disney, Gershwin, Labi Siffre and Rod Stewart.

My personal favourite was “channelling my inner Whoopi Goldberg” in a number from Sister Act. The concert gave many of the members the chance to challenge themselves knowing that everyone around them was willing them to succeed. There are clips available on our website of both summer concerts should you wish to see us in action.

As an experienced singer I have

learnt so much since I joined the group and not just new songs.

Our innovative and enthusiastic Musical Director, Nicole, has provided guidance on breathing techniques, rhythm, counting and listening to others around us. All of this is delivered in a fun way which engages everyone, irrespective of their singing ability, musical knowledge or experience.

In addition to singing, Serenade gives back to the wider community; the business interests and hobbies of all members are supported and each year we support a chosen charity with their fundraising. This year our chosen charity is ‘Shepshed Volunteer Centre’.

On Monday 19th September 2016 we plan to open our doors to “the boys”, when the men in the lives of our members will be invited to a rehearsal to join with us in singing some of our favourite pieces and to get a taste of why we all enjoy our Monday evenings so much.

All are welcome to take part!

Interestingly, a community choir in Canada describe the benefits of singing on their website as, “cheaper than therapy, healthier than drinking, and certainly more fun than working out. It is the one thing in life where feeling better is pretty much guaranteed.” I’m sure our members would agree.

So, if you are interested in gaining these benefits by joining the choir, new members are always welcome, regardless of singing ability! We rehearse on Monday evenings 7.30 – 9pm at Shepshed High School and each session costs £3.00. The British Transplant Games are the flagship project of the charity Transplant Sport and have been in existence since 1978. The Games are held annually in different cities across the UK. Any children or adults who have had either an organ or bone marrow transplant are eligible to take part.

John took part in several events this year as part of an elevenstrong Leicester Adults Team.

The Leicester team receives no automatic funding or sponsorship.

The Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, encouraging transplant patients to regain fitness, whilst increasing public awareness of the need for more people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register and discuss their wishes with their families.

The Games also seek to thank and celebrate donor families and the gift of life.

The sports involved within the Games are competed for within age group bands. Sports in the Games include amongst others swimming, track and field athletics, golf, crown green bowls, squash, tennis, football, snooker, fishing, darts, archery, volleyball and ten pin bowling. Taking part, regardless of ability, is what Transplant Sport is all about.

John very much enjoys meeting and competing at the Games against others that have had life saving transplants. He wishes to encourage anyone who is eligible to join Transplant Sport with a view of taking part in the British Transplant Games in the future.

He recommends taking a look at both the British Transplant Games and Transplant Sport web sites.

Anyone taking part in the Games has to be part of a team and there are the contact details for Sue Reynolds, the Leicester team manager, on the Transplant Sport web site.

The 2017 Games will be held in North Lanarkshire, Scotland from July 27th to 30th.

The programme has something for every photographer, no matter what their interests or skill level. The more experienced club members enjoy helping and advising others informally and everyone can improve their photography through participating in competitions and attending entertaining and instructive talks by expert visiting and local photographers. Shepshed Rotary Club News The Rotary Club of Shepshed had Committee Members from the Leicestershire and Rutland Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association to talk about living with this devastating and fatal disease that can affect any Adult at any time.

Janet McMillan, the Branch Chairman, gave a talk on the effects of living with the disease, the development of treatment, and how support and help is there for the patient and their family members.

Retirement Of Popular Shepshed Minister The congregation of Charnwood Road Baptist Church will be saying good bye to their much loved and respected Minister Rev. Howard Ketton.

Howard and his wife Hilary have faithfully served the church and the wider community in Shepshed for the past 12 years and everyone will be sorry to see them leave.

Going Up! The summer has flown past and September is upon us already.

Now is a good time to step back and have a look at how the garden performed this year whether it was lacking colour; requiring too much maintenance; full of overgrown plants; a boring patch with no interest?

Well before the autumn and winter descend and many retreat indoors it’s worth thinking on how you can resolve all of those niggles you have and getting them sorted once and for all. Changing the layout of a garden can dramatically change both It’s aesthetics and its practicality. What is a dull square of lawn surrounded by tired fencing, with a few plants squeezed into a border and the obligatory shed, doesn’t have to be the way your garden is. With the addition of a few plants or adding some simple elements your garden can become a lovely space, add in some structure with new features and your dream space can be a reality.

I find that adding height to a garden can work really well regardless of how small or large the space is. The addition of vertical elements creates structure in the garden, interrupting sightlines, screening eyesores or compartmentalize the space.

a secluded corner to relax in, here are some of the ways I transform gardens for those seeking their ideal space.

Working with what you have For a start most of us have a boundary of some sort surrounding our gardens and one way of injecting interest and colour is to grow colourful climbers up the fence, wall or building to soften the hard lines and make it more appealing. Try: Evergreens such a Star Jasmine for sunny sites or Honeysuckles e.g Lonicera ‘Halliana’ to screen large areas. For pretty colour & scent try climbing roses or Jasmine.

Simple and effective Obelisks are something I use a lot of in my clients gardens to add height within a border and lift the eye up and make the space feel larger as a result. The beauty of obelisks is they can be moved around the garden as requirements change. Annual climbers such as fragrant sweet peas are perfect, or for longer term planting I favour summer flowering Clematis which add a splash of colour.

Adding new features For more privacy freestanding features such as pergolas, gazebos and archways not only act as a support for plants but they add

structure to the garden and a destination or focal point within the space. Trellis panelling is not just for use as fencing or on walls for plant support. It can be used very successfully to divide a garden into sections which can help to screen unsightly areas, create a private courtyard-like space or divide the garden into rooms, making the site feel larger and lending a sense of intrigue. Climbers like those mentioned above can soften these structures as well as adding further screening.

Metal frames are something I have had great success with in several gardens I have designed, when used as supports for trained fruit trees such as Apples and Plums.

The trees can be pruned and tied into the wires on the framework producing living screens which have a similar effect to trellis screening but with a more natural feel and the added bonus of a productive fruit crop.

I hope I have inspired you to take a fresh look at your garden and get a step or two closer to you ideal space. Next month I’ll be looking at how to reduce maintenance in the garden.

Shepshed Town Council Labour Group Update Claire Poole: I was able to help local residents at Beresford Court to stop their Warden Service being changed to a four-monthly Warden Service. The residents at Beresford Court were very unhappy with this proposal from Charnwood Borough Council as it would have meant them losing the valued services of their current long-standing Warden and having a new Warden every four months.

After I got involved with the residents, common sense seems to have prevailed at Charnwood Borough Council as I am happy to report that this proposal has been dropped. I created a petition with the residents at Beresford Court which I will be handing into Charnwood Borough Council very soon. I will update you when I have further information.

Developments in Shepshed are happening fast this summer from the further development of the nature reserve which now has 3 ponds – all looking lovely and is now a great home to lots of biodiverse pond wildlife.

Many of the Shepshed Town Council owned parks are multi-functional like Little Haw Lane playfields and Glenmore Park which means that careful consideration and discussion must be had with all the parks users and Shepshed Town Council before any new developments or changes take place.

There are 2 parks in which dog walking is restricted to dogs being on leads. They are Glenmore Park and inside the new fencing on the Oakley Road children play equipment. This for the safety of both the dog, the walkers, children, parents and families.

I attended the Shepshed Lions’ Carnival in my capacity as Chairperson for Shepshed Town Council. It is always my pleasure to support this great event for Shepshed and as always I thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Robert Ewing: Following the terrible weather at the end of last year the football team that use the Little Haw Lane playing field were forced to cancel a few games due to water logged pitch. Shepshed Town Council decided to install drainage on the playing field and this has now been completed at a cost of approximately £15,000.

Jane Lennie: You may be aware that a planned development is yet to be started on land off Iveshead Road. There have been several instances of flooding recently and, through the Town Council, I have proposed that building be postponed until the drainage is improved enough to deal with the additional waste and run-off water.

We are now hoping that this investment will solve the drainage problem leaving the field free from water flooding and allowing the pitch to be used throughout the year. We have also decided to invest in a bog garden at Glenmore Park near Park Court and the gate on Park Rise at a cost of approximately £1,718.

We have also been notified of a new Charnwood Local Plan (for future development) which follows on from the Core Strategy adopted last year.

The plan is in consultation.

The main topic is provision of housing to suit people's needs and I have put forward several responses including: 1. Spreading development more equally across the villages in Charnwood and 2. Building low cost housing to buy, and low rent housing, before any other types of houses are considered. I have challenged Charnwood time and again on the difference between housing need and what developers want to sell, and will continue to do so.

Raymond Draycott: I was disappointed that we were unable to get the naming rights to the Shepshed Nature reserve to celebrate the Queens 90th birthday. It would appear to get royal endorsement is very difficult. We still need to name the Nature Reserves in Shepshed so it was decided in Council to have a competition between local Shepshed primary schools. I will update you when I know more.

Myriam Roberts, Glenys Timson: We had a recent problem with uncut long grass in Shepshed Cemetery, due to summer rainy weather, which has caused the grass to grow over long. Also a Shepshed Town Council staff illness has meant that cutting the grass in the cemetery has taken longer than normal. We understand this has caused some Shepshed residents distress and both the Vice Chair of the Estate and Recreation and myself apologise for it.

Are held on the second Saturday of each month at Shepshed Town Council offices in Charnwood Road from 11am until 12 noon.

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I mentioned in my last Shepshed Eye column that the NHS is proposing that University Hospitals of Leicester should stop carrying out children’s heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital. I know this is of interest to families across the East Midlands. It is also clear that many people, including those who have benefited from the treatment at Glenfield, those working in the local NHS, local MPs and councillors, will work with University Hospitals of Leicester to challenge this decision.

At the time of writing over 23,000 people from all over the country have signed the campaign’s petition. The plan is to get to 100,000 signatures which triggers a debate in Parliament – although you can be assured Leicester and Leicestershire MPs will not be waiting to raise this in Parliament.

Loughborough MP Warns Residents To Stay Alert To Telephone Scams Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan is urging constituents to be vigilant against telephone scams.

She has been contacted by a number of constituents as well as Leicestershire Police about a number of different scams locally.

With people becoming more alert to telephone scams, scammers are finding even more sophisticated ways to trick people. Some of the scams that are currently being reported locally are: A call from someone claiming to be a Windows technician. The aim of the scammers is to talk the call taker into installing remote software on their computer, so that they might then take control. Once done, this will either allow them to steal data, introduce a Trojan horse or other malware.

Home-Start trains and supports volunteers to offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families with a child under five, in their own homes. It is primarily a home visiting scheme that aims to work in partnership with the families providing encouragement and help in time of difficulties.

They are setting up a “My family in Mind” group where parents of young children can be supported to maintain their emotional wellbeing. If you are caring for a young child at home, have received treatment for anxiety, depression, isolation or low mood, feel it might help to share, confidentially, your feelings with families going through similar experiences and would like your family’s future to “include more smiling, playing and laughing” then do call Sharleen on 01509 239786.

Finally, I am keeping my fingers crossed for a fine day for the Shepshed Lions Carnival at Glenmore Park on Bank Holiday Monday. If anyone deserves good weather then I think the Lions, who put on such a great annual event, definitely do. I look forward to seeing many Shepshed Eye readers there. saying that they need to open a new account as there is a problem with their current account.

A call from the local council claiming that the call taker has not paid enough on their Council Tax. There are many more, and Nicky is warning local residents to stay alert.

“I have been contacted by a number a residents locally who have received phone calls which appear to be genuine but they are in fact fraudulent and deceptive.

If you receive unsolicited phone calls, please be aware. Never give out any personal details, and remember if something doesn’t sound right, it probably isn’t.”

Nicky is encouraging people to contact Action Fraud if they’ve experienced similar issues. She has also asked constituents to let her know when they have received suspicious phone calls so that she can warn others locally of similar telephone scams.

Bradgate Park

The new Visitor centre has been open now for a few weeks and is proving very popular. The official opening will take place in September by Sir David Attenborough.

Following an increasing amount of inappropriate behaviour by visitors in the Ruins, the Ruins will be closed to the public with immediate effect until the end of August. With effect from 1st September the Ruins will reopen on a ticketed basis to ensure that those who wish to discover the fascinating history of Bradgate House can do so. It is a shame that Bradgate Park are having to restrict access in this way, but the few have spoiled it for the majority.

Minerals and waste consultation

There is still time to have your say on Leicestershire County Council’s new Minerals and Waste Local Plan.

People are invited to have your say on proposals to guide mineral extraction and waste developments over the next 15 years, covering the period up to 2031. The plan and a response form are available at www. leicestershire.gov.uk/mineralsand-waste.

Over the next 15 years, it is predicted that there are sufficient reserves to meet demand for 231 million tonnes of crushed rock.

By 2031, the county will produce around 3.5 million tonnes of waste per year.

Consultation will take place until September 23rd. The plan will then be submitted to the Environment Secretary, for independent examination in public by a planning inspector.

Launch of Consultation on the accommodation Strategy for Older People

The consultation will seek to identify opportunities to work with partners to develop accommodation options and to ascertain the advice and information that needs to be provided to help people to plan for their later life. It will be looking at future needs and aspirations of older people to live independently, and reduce the demand for health and social care services. Particular attention is being given to extra care housing, which can provide an alternative to residential care or for people struggling in unsuitable accommodation requiring large packages of care.

The draft strategies and consultation document can be accessed on www.leicestershire. gov.uk.accommodation-strategyconsultation Further current consultations being carried out are Community Life Choices, otherwise known as Day Services, for people with health care needs such as learning difficulties, physical disabilities and mental illness. The Council are considering how it can provide a more efficient service while minimising the impact on service users and their families.

Another consultation is The Leicester and Leicestershire Rail Strategy. These documents may be accessed via the County Council’s website or by searching “Leicestershire County Councils Current Consultations”.

Suspicious callers posing as Leicestershire County Council officers

A recent report of a suspicious caller posing as being from the County advising people that they are required to make an additional payment to their council tax. The caller then tries to take a payment over the telephone. Neither LCC nor any of the district councils who collect Council Tax would ring you to try to take a payment over the telephone.

Never give bank details or personal information you anybody you do not feel is 100% genuine.

Please also make this aware to any vulnerable persons you know who might be contacted.

We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours. Anti-social behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues.

Arnold Smith House/ Beresford Court

Following representation from residents of the 2 sheltered housing facilities regarding the Warden service which was due to be altered from having a regular Warden to different wardens every four months. Residents were concerned that their regular warden who knew them well, knew who was due to go into hospital or who had just come out and they could trust her.

Cllr Radford contacted Christine Ansell, Head of Landlord Services who was not aware of the proposed changes. After having extensive discussions it was decided that CBC cannot proceed with the new proposal and the wardens therefore will not change. It took a few days to get the original rotas up and running.

Residents of both facilities are very relieved.

Strategic Growth Plan

The strategic Growth Plan is the overarching plan which will set out the aspirations for delivering growth in Leicester and Leicestershire. It will set out in broad terms, the amount and location of future growth (housing, economic, infrastructure, employment) Leicester and Leicestershire will be expecting to accommodate until 2050.

It will mean that Local Plans, strategies for economic growth, infrastructure and investment plans of all local authorities and the LLEP are developed within a consistent framework. This will make it easier to plan for infrastructure and investment and secure funding for this from Government.

GLW Feeds Update

A noise monitoring equipment has been installed at a property in Fairway Road and following a certain amount of time will be sent for calibration so that it can be used for legal purposes.

Following a site visit by the Environment Agency to GLW Feeds they requested that they review their current Environmental Management System and list all the potential sources of dust, odour and noise on site.

A Newsletter will be circulate by the Environmental Agency at the end of August which will be sent to local residents and other interested parties updating them on the progress made so far and the next steps.
