From Saviour To Sailor!

The last time he was treading the boards of a local stage in a principal part, Darryl Clarke was playing Jesus Christ in ESNA’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Now he is swapping the challenges of portraying the Saviour for the high seas, as he prepares to take on the sailor-lead of Ralph Rackstraw in Christchurch G&S Society’s production of HMS Pinafore. This won’t be the first time that Darryl has performed with Christchurch G&S having previously starred in The Mikado and the group are delighted to welcome him back for this show.

Set on board the ship HMS Pinafore, the story is a classic tale of forbidden love – between the Captain’s daughter Josephine and the much lower-class sailor Ralph Rackstraw. Josephine is dutifully planning on following her father’s wishes to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty Sir Joseph Porter, who has been invited aboard the Pinafore – along with his numerous sisters, cousins and aunts. Ralph is encouraged by Sir Joseph’s views on the equality of humankind to try and win Josephine’s heart. Eventually he succeeds and the couple make plans to elope and wed but their plans are foiled, when word reaches the Captain.

Only the revelation of a big secret can save their love.

The satire in Pinafore is as relevant today as it was when Gilbert penned the lyrics in the 1870s. There are plenty of jibes at the class system, party politics and patriotism.

Musical highlights include ‘We sail the ocean blue’, Josephine’s beautiful solo ‘Sorry her lot’, the rousing chorus number ‘A British tar…’ and ‘Carefully on tip-toe stealing’.

Richard Perkins Snr is returning to the Director’s chair for this production, ably supported by his daughter Nicole Jordan as Musical Director. Playing alongside Darryl is Alison Matthews as the Captain’s daughter Josephine, struggling with her love of a lowly sailor (Darryl’s Ralph Rackstraw). Eddie Atkin is Captain Corcoran and Andy Savage is Sir Joseph Porter, in his debut role with the society after joining them last year. Angela Kilpin returns to the principal line-up as Little Buttercup and Al Jordan is Dick Deadeye with other roles taken on by Sue Smith, Richard Tomlinson and Matthew Hammersley.

HMS Pinafore is at Hind Leys College Theatre, Shepshed from Tuesday 8th to Saturday 12th November and tickets are on sale now. Shepshed History Society

Jumbo Jumble Sale At Shepshed

A very successful and a very interesting evening was enjoyed by the Shepshed History Society when on Sept. 13th Mr Morry Van Ments gave a talk and showed the society many examples of Japanese Netskis. A little known Asian History period that evolved from the wearing of Kimono's by Japanese gentlemen in the 1700's. 1653 saw Japan beginning to enjoy two hundred years of peace with men still wearing these robes on a daily basis.

It’s that time of year again when the people of St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed ask you to ‘Delve in your drawers, Search your sheds, Clean out your cupboards, Wade in your wardrobes and Attack the attic’.

Bric-a-brac, ‘kitchenalia’, books, clothes, tools, china and glass are all acceptable providing they are in good condition.

However having no pockets they needed purses called Inro's to hold their personal belongings.

Then toggles were required to stop the cord from slipping from these pouches and so these exquisite carvings known as Netskis came into being. They were intricately carved in a variety of designs in ivory or in some cases hard wood and the amazing in depth details were incredible to see. And such is this work of art still in existence today that there a great many collectors world wide who still amass interesting collections.

Come 1853 when America invaded Japan, trousers began to replace Kimono's and so these toggles drifted in to history but now they are very much sought after and being made of extremely strong material they have all stood the test of time.

Shepshed Kick Off The New Season With 2 Wins Shepshed RFC began the new season with away games against Aylestone St James and Vipers.

Following a good pre-season with new players joining and former players returning Shepshed have a strong squad to make a statement that the club is back following a difficult season off the pitch last year.

Newly appointed first team captain Darren Perry has put in a lot of work to build up the team spirit around the club and it has paid off in the first games with good numbers and strong teams put together.

The first game against Aylestone St James 2nd XV (Jimmie’s 2s) ended in a 35-10 victory with tries scored by Darren Perry,

Shepshed RFC Beer Festival Helps Raise Money For Veterans Charity Punters at last month’s Beer Festival at The Bottom Railway helped raise over £250 for Veterans In Action Following the death of Paul Wilkens it was decided that a collection bucket would be put out at the Shepshed RFC Beer Festival in August to help raise money for a charity that was close to Paul’s heart, Veterans In Action. Over the course of the festival which was attended by hundreds of people, £251 was raised just from spare change and generous donations.

Veterans In Action (VIA) started as an idea in early 2008 by three

The second game was against Vipers 3rd XV in Blaby and was hard fought game throughout.

Vipers took a 15-8 lead at half time but 3 quick fire tries in the second half set Shepshed on the path to a 36-20 victory. Tries scored by Harry Nassau (x2), Lewis Flack, Ben Newcombe and Tom Pitt. Blake Turner was efficient with the boot again scoring 1 penalty and 4 out of 5 conversions.

The first home game of the season is against Loughborough Social at Shepshed High School on September 24th.

The aim being that they would ‘help themselves by helping others’. This was based around the many tasks that the Royal Engineers do throughout the world and the great feeling and sense of achievement you get from completing the task. Since then VIA have completed various projects and challenges all in order to support affected veterans and raise awareness for PTSD. Shepshed RFC also hosted a curry night set up by Paul Wilkens at The Bottom Railway last October which helped to raise over £150.

Once again your unwanted goods are required to sell at their Jumbo Jumble Sale to be held in the Church Hall, Church Gate from 10.00am until 1.00pm on Saturday 22nd October. Items may be brought to the hall on the previous day (Friday 21st) between 2.00pm and 4.00pm, and from 6.30pm until 7.30pm.

Refreshments will be available, and fun can be had trying on in the nearly new ‘department’, where a mirror will be placed for use. It is planned to have a children’s section with good condition clothes, buggies, car seats, high-chairs, toys etc..

This is the fourth such event, and in the past it has attracted people from quite a distance. The organisers have been delighted both by the quality of the goods donated for sale, the numbers who came, and the financial results. It is hoped that this year’s event will be just as successful.

Every year there is a huge quantity of goods remaining after the event, which is gladly accepted by a worthy cause. This year the charity is the children’s hospice ‘Rainbows,’ for sale in their shops.

Nothing is wasted! Do come along!

Shepshed WI Members of Shepshed WI held a harvest auction at their September meeting when produce, both home grown and shop bought, were auctioned. Chris Thomas made an excellent job of being auctioneer. Plans were made for the forthcoming Christmas Tree Festival at St Botolphs Church in November.

The next meeting will be held at 7.30 pm on Thursday 6th October at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed, and the subject of the talk for the evening will be Patchwork for Pleasure.

Forest House Surgery Facts about Smoking • 9 million adults in GB smoke cigarettes – 20% of men and 17% of women.

• Smoking costs the NHS £2 billion a year for treating smoking related diseases.

• Long term passive smoking (children in cars and rooms with adults smoking) increases risks of lung cancer and heart disease by 30%.

• Worldwide it is estimated that 1% of deaths are attributed to diseases related to second-hand smoking.

Shepshed And District Camera Club The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club recently begun their new season with the annual competition for members groups of 4 new images taken over recent months. The two judges, Peter Wryecraft and John Woulidge, both from the Coalville Club, talked about each image and awarded them marks out of 20.

In a close result there was a tie for first place with Garry Rennocks and John Clarke both achieving 73 marks with their four images respectively, and they were followed by Kevin Padmore with 68 points and Alan Harris with 66. The overall best single image from the 52 entries was judged to be Urba by Garry Rennocks.

St Botolphs’s Church, Celebrating A ‘Light Party’ – A Christian Halloween Party As the days begin to shorten, the dark becomes more and more visible, Autumn is well and truly upon us. Crisp chilly days, falling leaves, bonfires and Halloween.

How did Halloween begin? The holiday traces back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain.

The ancient Celts from Britain and Ireland observed the start of the new year on November 1, All Souls Day. The day marked the end of summer and the harvest.

Folks came to believe that on October 31, the worlds of the living and dead overlapped before the start of the new year.

October 31 became All Hallows Eve, a time where the ghosts of the dead could return to destroy the harvest that was stored for winter. People set bonfires on hilltops to ward off the evil spirits before the start of the winter season.

Christians remembered death itself on All Hallow's Eve and celebrated Christ's victory over death. During the Middle Ages, Christians would gather in Churches for worship and they would remember the saints' victories over evil. Likewise they would put on little displays showing Jesus' victory of Satan, often using unusual masks and costumes to act out the story.

Thus, the festivities on All Hallow's Eve were the Christian's way of laughing at death and evil, something we can do in certain hope of Christ's victory over the powers of darkness. The Church for centuries, however, has seen All Hallow's Eve not as a glorification of evil, but as a chance to affirm eternal life in the face of the death of our mortal bodies. Just as Easter is a celebration of Jesus' victory over death and evil, so is Halloween!

Halloween means ‘the evening before All Holy Ones’ Day’. We have many fun secular ways of recognizing it in addition to religious ways, but it’s important to remember that its celebration has a long, positive history in Church.

Housing Developments In Shepshed Once again we are being asked by Charnwood Borough Council for our comments on the proposed development on Tickow Lane, and again we will be objecting. The infrastructure of the town has not changed, therefore the contents of this letter hold true over two years later.

11 Tickow Lane Shepshed Loughborough LE12 9LY 10th July 2013 The Producer Central News ITV Central Birmingham Dear Sir ‘The Plight of Shepshed’ During the past few days we have attended two consultations about proposed developments along the lovely Tickow Lane in Shepshed. At both events there was definitely an air of despair and utter despondency as to what our town was facing, obviously planned by people absolutely ignorant of the town and its present problems; problems which will be magnified enormously when the extra housing estates are added. At the moment there are approximately 5000 houses, this is set to double.

This town cannot cope for the following reasons that are being ignored by the developers: • The main road structure is as it was in the 19th Century.

• Even the main roads are narrow and mostly reduced to single lane by parked cars • The town easily becomes gridlocked when an incident on the M1 means that traffic is diverted through the town.

• Limited job opportunities in Shepshed mean that most people experience huge queues getting out of the town to get to their place of work. What about their carbon foot print?

• One frequently has to wait for as much as two months to get an appointment with one’s doctor • The schools are full • Hind Leys College used to be a Community College, for some unknown reason it suddenly lost this status a few years ago.

• No bank • No leisure facilities, only a swimming pool which closes for the summer holidays • Few shops • General ‘tatty’ appearance of many buildings.

• It was recently passed that a Biffa Incinerator should be built at the M1 junction on the A512 i.e. the road which runs along the south eastern edge of Shepshed.

Eric Pickles MP passed this against the wishes of all the councils, including the County Council, and

will be ‘fed’ by trucks 24/7. The traffic congestion does not bear thinking about, to say nothing of the toxic emissions.

• The land being developed is good farmland with wonderful wildlife.

Over the years the Council has employed several groups of so-called experts to advise on the regeneration of the town but all were strangers to the place.

Their expensive investigations came to nothing. I will give you a few examples of their comments, which I think, prove the point that they were of no use.

Some years ago at an exhibition put on at Hind Leys College one of these so-called planning experts described the good productive farmland on the west side of the town as WASTELAND. At another more recent consultation regarding one of the proposed developments, when asked what was going to happen to a really mature hedge and an oak tree, my husband got the reply that they could be moved.

The hedge in question is mainly blackthorn with its lovely early flowers, and is at least 15feet high.

Now the plans for this estate show that a delightful row of nicely maturing trees on the roadside will be felled.

Shepshed has 2 centres one of which is the Bull Ring, quite small with 5 roads leading into it.

Both single and double- decker buses circumnavigate the Bull Ring regularly, and there is a bus stop. Very frequently one can see congestion in the Bull Ring, especially when a delivery truck is also trying to negotiate the space. Despite this situation the last group of ‘experts’ employed to advise on the regeneration, recommended that the pavements should be widened. It transpired that their observations had been carried out at 6 o’clock in the morning when there was little traffic around.

Yes, there is a master plan for the regeneration of Shepshed, as I read it my scepticism increased.

I recommend that Shepshed people do read it --- personally I doubt whether such changes will ever happen. It is now that the regeneration of the town is needed, surely our population of nearly 15,000 warrants at least a bank.

I sincerely hope that I have got over to you the plight of our town and that you are able to feature the ’Plight of Shepshed’ on the Central News programme. Maybe you could try and find a similar sized town with so few facilities, bearing in mind that we haven’t even got a bank!

Interact Presents Joseph Cooper Showcase

Shepshed Scaresheep Festival Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October 2016 Back by enormous popular request We are holding our second sheep-themed scarecrow type event to raise funds for the Shepshed Volunteer Centre and the Shepshed Community Bus. Residents and businesses will be taking part in the competition by creating a display in their front window or front garden. The prizes awarded will be for the best Organisation / Business Window and the best Residential Front Window or Front Garden Scare Sheep voted for by the public and the best Organisation / Business Window judged by Shepshed Town Councillors.

Residents may have entered as a single household or as part of

a group of neighbours working together. It is hoped that some clubs and societies will take part as the Twinning Association did last year.

The Scare Sheep Folds (Programmes) will be on sale from the Volunteer Centre from 3rd October for £3 per family group and will include a map to help you find the entries and your voting paper to help decide the best Shepshed Scare Sheep.

On Friday 28th October, the Interact Club of Hind Leys College will be presenting the Joseph Cooper Showcase. The Show will take place in Hind Leys College Theatre, beginning at 7.30pm.

Featuring many of Hind Leys' most talented students, the Show is to raise money for the Joseph Cooper Trust.

The Charity raises money for children with cancer, and is very close to the hearts of Hind Leys students, as many knew Joseph himself. Therefore, Interact have chosen the Charity, as one of their main causes for 2016 and 2017. More information about the Charity and it's wonderful work

will be available on the night of the Show.

Not only is this an opportunity to help raise money for a very worthy cause but it is an opportunity also to bring together the community to celebrate the achievements of the younger generation.

Alongside the Showcase, during the interval, refreshments will be available to purchase and there will be a raffle. Tickets will be available to purchase from Hind Leys College Reception at £4 for Adults and £2 for concessions.

The new well-being garden at the Volunteer Centre will host a Scare Sheep compiled by the Brownies and Guides. Light refreshments will also be available in the large shed in the garden.

Other sheep-related events will take place during the Scare Sheep weekend of Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October. So get the family together to view the displays around the sheep theme and vote for your favourite.

It has been an exciting year for us, but we still have difficult times ahead and we really need your support, so please come along to the meeting to find out what we have been doing in our new well being garden and let us know how you think we can improve the services we provide.

Low Maintenance Autumn is now upon us and the verdant growth we’ve experienced in the garden this summer is slowing down. Now is a good time to consider whether your garden has been up to scratch this year. Many of us are short of time these days with juggling work, family and all of the day to day chores we have to complete before we have time to sit back and relax.

Gardening can become a chore for those who are time poor, but there are ways to reduce the time and effort it takes to keep the garden looking good all year round. When I visit new clients to discuss their needs for their gardens and look at how I can design or enhance their spaces to fulfil their requirements, one of the first questions I ask is how much time they can devote to looking after the plants, lawns and hedges and so on so that I can tailor the design to suit.

From my experience it is often the lawn which requires most care during the spring and summer as it grows abundantly and needs a trim every week or two. Some planting demands deadheading and regular trimming to keep it in shape and then hedges need a haircut once or twice during the year to keep them looking at their best. For some it is weeding which takes up so much of their time and it is difficult to keep on top of the weeds if they are

There are ways to reduce the ongoing maintenance in the garden but ‘no maintenance’ is improbable if you would like a space which is a joy to look at too!

Key Tips For Low Maintenance Planting: Chose well behaved evergreen shrubs to give all year round structure. Eg. Hebes, Choisya, Euonymous, Buxus, Skimmia Select dwarf and compact forms of plants so that they don’t over grow their space and can be easily trimmed without the need for a ladder or long handled equipment. E.g Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ Look for plant varieties which are repeat flowerers so you get a long period of colour without much effort – e.g Geranium Rozanne will flower from June – September without any deadheading or trimming.

Select the right plant for the right place – Plants always look healthier and grow better if they are sited in an appropriate situation. If you have a sunny garden make sure you buy plants which are suited to that aspect - some shade loving plants will soon look tatty in a sunny spot.

Use ground covering plants to spread beneath shrubs and trees to reduce the emergence of weeds. E.g Heuchera, Tiarella, Geranium ‘Spessart’ Membrane and a covering mulch of wood chip or gravel stops weeds growing in newly planted areas. Lay the membrane on the prepared soil and cut crosses through to enable planting. Cover with mulch and water the plants well. A word of warning through – Black birds love to flick through wood chip and bark looking for insects and it often makes it’s way on to the lawn causing difficulties during mowing.

Start again with the planting – this gives the opportunity to remove thuggish and overgrown plants and start a fresh with plants chosen to give interest throughout the year without high demands on time. Clearing out a border allows invasive weeds to be tackled thoroughly once and for all before the new plants are added. Well worth the work to get a new easily tamed look.

I hope I have given you some ideas for reducing maintenance in your garden. Next month I’ll be looking at how to select and plant bare-root fruit trees that will be available in shops and garden centres soon.

A talk by Roger Hailwood Monday October 24, 2016 Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30 p.m.

There was a large audience of members and guests on Monday September 19th to hear a copiously illustrated talk by Celia Sanger, who is a volunteer at Calke.

The Friends of Charnwood Forest are pleased to announce an illustrated talk by Roger Hailwood.

Roger Hailwood is a guide for the National Arboretum. He is part of their promotional team as a speaker at venues throughout the UK. At Alrewas, where he lives, he is regarded as the village historian and he has published several books.

In Alrewas he has been a youth leader, a church chorister and a Parish Councillor.

Roger’s talk about the National Arboretum will be illustrated by slides and will cover its foundation and development, and will give a snapshot of the over three hundred memorials on the site.

Calke Abbey was the home of the Harper-Crewe family for several hundred years. In 1985 the burden of such a great estate became too much and it was acquired by the National Trust.

The repairs and maintenance of such a property had proved too great for the owners and the National Trust was faced with neglect on a grand scale. Nothing had ever been thrown away which was both a problem and an enormous resource. Celia’s illustrations showed us the good times, the bad times and how the National Trust had brought house and gardens back to life.

The old formal gardens, requiring enormous maintenance and many gardeners , are gone forever but in their place is a beautiful estate which we can all enjoy. The deer park, with many red deer, flourishes and the lime avenue, planted in 1846, is as fine as ever.

Congratulations to every Shepshed Lions member and everyone else who made the August Bank Holiday carnival so special. The weather was fine and there were lots of different activities and great entertainment.

It was a really terrific event and I know many local causes will have benefited enormously.

The Boundary Commission for England has been reviewing the boundaries of our parliamentary constituencies and have now published their proposals. If approved they would take effect at the next general election, likely to be held in 2020. The current proposal for our area is that both Shepshed borough council wards would be moved into the North West Leicestershire constituency.

Shepshed will still remain part of Charnwood Borough Council.

The Loughborough constituency would also lose the Wolds ward and Sileby ward to the Charnwood seat but would then extend across the Nottinghamshire border to cover the southern part of the Rushcliffe constituency. The principle behind the proposals is that MPs should represent more equal sized constituencies and the number of MPs should be reduced from 650 to 600. Most constituencies are changing in one way or another.

I had a wonderful morning out on the canal with the Peter Le Marchant Trust last month. I joined a group from Vista Melton Mowbray for a very sunny trip from Loughborough to Normanton on Soar – and they even let me have a turn at the helm. It was a real privilege to meet the volunteers and staff from the Trust. For over thirty five years the Trust has provided day trips and holidays on waterways for people of all ages with any kind of disability or serious illness. Probus Club Of Shepshed News President Philip Moore welcomed members to the September meeting and gave a warm on welcome to our speaker June Edwards. After the apologies for absence we to work on the project read out and the business of the day was dealt with by the Secretary,lunch was taken followed by the usual raffle draw and our speaker introduced her talk on “Living and Working in Dubai”June went out to Dubai in 1975,new bride,new husband,new job in Dubai to work on the project to build a new harbour. With a flat in town and a working day of 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. and one hour for lunch the job entailed setting up the computer system,dealing

with wages,teaching office staff and in general looking after some of the 1000 ex-pats hired to build the harbour. The stories of life in 1970’s Dubai were numerous,some amusing,some serious. Women in authority did not go down well. However the Arab life was strict yet polite.

Gold was sold openly in shops – conviction for theft was severely punished. The royal yacht with the Queen officially opened the harbour on completion of the project.

They have now extended this to issues you have regarding blocked drains, dykes not being kept clean, water leaks etc., This proved invaluable when Severn Trent did not deal with the water leak on the A512 outside of the Indian restaurant. I contacted County and it was dealt with.

The flooding department will then contact the agencies/departments under whose responsibility the issue lies. flooding@leics.gov.uk, customerservices@leics.gov.uk and Christine.radford@leics.gov.uk or telephone 0116 305 0001 Flooding In Relation To New Developments Following the introduction of the Flood & Water Management Act in 2010 Leicestershire County Council (LCC) took on the responsibility of the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) for Leicestershire from the Environment Agency. More recently, LCC in in its role LLFA became a statutory consultee to the planning process. On all developments of 10 houses or more or major commercial developments as per the change of legislation detailed within the Written Ministerial Statement (HCWS161).

The remit of the LLFA is to assess the surface water drainage systems and associated flood risk. The LLFA utilise planning legislation such as the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and the Non Statutory Technical Standards, to advice the Local Planning Authority (LPA) on appropriate locations for development and the management of surface water discharges over the lifetime of the development.

Current legislation and guidance enables the LPA to restrict development to a discharge rate to the current discharge rate of the pre-development site (greenfield rate), or the practical minimum through

Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) techniques. The LLFA uses current industry guidance and engineering judgment to ensure that all designs meet these requirements and provide their advice accordingly.

Often the systems agreed connect into historic sewers and my in certain circumstance need upsizing to be able to cope with the additional capacity.

The capacity of the Severn Trent Water (STW) system is not something within the LLFA’s remit, however, the LLFA work closely with STW to identify problems, particularly in areas of flooding or flood risk.

With this in mind, and following all the recently agreed developments around Shepshed, especially the problems in Iveshead Road and Lansdown Road, I have asked County to look into the existing drainage and at the conditions already on the planning approvals to deal with discharging of surface water.

I wish to report that County have already raised concerns to Charnwood, regarding the approval for the 270 houses on land off Hathern Road near to the M1.

Street Light Transformation Project County have now commenced the updating of the lights on the main roads (High level lighting) in Shepshed. This should be completed by the end of November.

If after that date you are aware that a light has not been upgraded then please contacted either myself or County on the 0001 line.

Street Light Failure – Wednesday 21st September At approximately 8pm on Wednesday 21st September approximately 11,000 recently converted LED Street lights switched off. Those affected were on a part night lighting setting managed by the CMS system. The switch off was caused by a programming error. Work is underway with the software provider to minimise the risk of this occurring again and to identify safeguards.

Play Area – Buttercup Estate (Bottom Of Anson Road) Following representations from residents who have contacted us regarding the Play area situated on Celandine Road which is still fenced off on this estate. Your Borough Councillors have been in contact with Charnwood who have informed us that Senior Landscape Officers are having a meeting with the developers to discuss remedial works which need to be undertaken in order for the area to be adopted. The developer is currently in the process of completing these works; once they are done the area can be adopted and opened.

We have expressed our concerns of how long this is taking.

Development Rear Of 62 Iveshead Road P/16/1980/2 The detailed application for 71 dwellings has now been deposited with Charnwood. Your Borough Councillors are concerned about the revised layout and house types on this detailed application and the position of the SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System).

We feel strongly that bungalows should be situated behind the Bungalows already on Iveshead Road and 3 storey properties are not in keeping with the area which is elevated.

We have raised our concerns with Officers at a meeting.

Dwellings At Westroyd House, Tickow Lane P/16/2046/2 An application for the erection of 9 dwellings and associated access (outline planning application) at Westroyd House Tickow Lane has been lodged with Charnwood.

Your Borough Councillors have raised concerns about the access near to an old persons residents, type and size of properties, they are proposing all 9 being 4 bedroom properties, bungalows would be better (but this does not mean we support the application) and the nearness to the badgers sett.

We have asked that this application goes before a plans committee so that we can highlight our concerns.
