Le Rickshaw Wallah’s Story Former Shepshed and Charnwood Borough Councillor, Roy Kershaw, has published his second book. Completely different from his first, which was a political memoir, this book is a fictional children’s story entitles Le Richshaw Wallah’s Story. It’s set in Bangladeshi boy, (where the author lived for some 5 years), and tells the story of a young Bangladeshi boy, Anwar, who loses all his family in a storm that destroys his village. After many adventures he arrives in Dhaka where he becomes a rickshaw wallah (driver). Winning the annual Dhaka richshaw race, he’s spotted by chief of ‘China International Cycles’ sponsors of Dhaka Cycling Club. Anwar’s invited to join international Cycles team at Le Tour de France, which he wins. He also wins the heart of Sadia, daughter of Bangladesh Ambassador to France.

Whilst living in Bangladesh, the author accidentally fell into a roadside ditch, lying injured and unconscious before being rescued by a group of rickshaw fraternity and his wish to write a story in their honour.

Shepshed & District Camera Club For the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club the two meetings before the annual mid-October break proved very entertaining being firstly a Critique evening and then the fourth Competition League round of 2016. For the Critique evening members digital images were projected and much ‘lively’ discussion ensued as to whether they needed changes or improvements. At the same time one of the members was able to enact those changes so they could be seen in real time on the screen and it also enabled various people to provide instruction to those unfamiliar with the changes being suggested.

The league competition was judged by a good friend of the club, Colin Machin, himself a member of the club at Sileby. As is always the case Colin gave his usual entertaining appraisal of the prints and digital images on display laced with various anecdotes and stories. At the end Colin selected the award winners in the two classes as follows:

Loughborough Flower Lovers' Club is looking forward to its annual Christmas Open Meeting on Thursday, 17 November, when members of the public are invited to what promises to be a wonderful evening's entertainment by the celebrated floral designer, Jonathan Moseley, whose demonstration of flower arranging is entitled 'Crafted for Christmas'.

Jonathan was the Floral Expert on BBC2’s The Big Allotment Challenge and is the designer of the annual Florabundance festival at Chatsworth House, where he also hosts demonstrations and workshops.

The Glenmore Centre will once again be hosting a Christmas Day Lunch for anyone from Shepshed who would otherwise be spending Christmas alone. We would love welcome new people to this very enjoyable day. A delicious three course Christmas Lunch is provided as well as music, drinks and a raffle. Transport can be provided if necessary. We are also looking for gifts to be used as raffle prizes and baskets that can be made into hampers if anyone has anything they would like to donate.

The event will be held at Our Lady's Convent School, Gray Street, Loughborough, LE11 2DZ, where there is plenty of free parking within the school grounds.

Ring Christmas Bells

Although the performance starts at 7.30 pm, the doors will open at 6.30 pm to give all those attending time for free light refreshments. There will also be a tombola and a raffle. The raffle prizes will, of course, be the spectacular flower arrangements produced during the evening.

On December 3rd between 10am and 2pm, St Winefrides Church will be holding a Traditional Christmas Fayre at Hind Leys High School Forest Road Shepshed, we would love for you to come and join us. The school choir from St Winefrides Academy will open the event with carols to welcome Santa Claus. While there you will be able to buy, cakes, pickles, Christmas puddings, bric a brac, toys and crafts. There will be lots of games for you to play and when tired a seat and refreshments are available. Please come and have a look round and start your Christmas celebrations with us.

With the Festive Season approaching all too quickly, Shepshed Lions Club are preparing for their annual Christmas programme of events for our community.

The programme starts on Saturday 26th November 2016, with kind permission of the Midlands Cooperative Society, when Shepshed Lions Club members will be undertaking a tin shake at the Co-operative store in the Hallcroft Shepshed to raise funds to provide a Christmas gift of Biscuits and a Voucher to members of our community who are less fortunate than others.

On Sunday 11th December 2016 we will be holding our 2nd Annual Christmas Market in the Hallcroft, Shepshed. This market came about as a result of public demand and was a great success last year. The market comprises of a range of stalls selling Christmas goodies for all tastes, a street entertainer Mad Dominic who was a great attraction for children of all ages last year, school choirs from St. Winefides, Newcroft and St. Botolphs schools together with the Bell Ringers from St Botolphs school, a brass band playing Christmas Carols, and Santa's Grotto. Livio's Restaurant will be selling mulled wine, Meet n' Eat will supply tea and coffee for 50p per cup, The Guest House will be selling hot soup and a bread roll and Sparkells Hair Salon selling refreshments (proceeds kindly going to Shepshed Lions Club), a stall selling hot crepes, a stall selling mince pies, and much more. We are hoping to get a Hot Chestnut seller for the day. The stall places are limited but there are still some available at a cost of £25. If you wish to apply for a stall please contact Lion Susan Lilley at thelilleys15@gmail.com. Look out for the posters around the Town nearer the date.

On Monday 12th December 2016, the ever-popular Santa Sleigh will tour the streets of Shepshed. The routes are being prepared and Santa and his helpers hope to visit as many children as possible during the tour of the Town. The routes will be published as soon as they are completed in the local media and on the Shepshed Lions Club website. Whilst every effort is made to let everyone see the sleigh, unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control,

it is not always possible to get to every road.

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are delighted to announce that they have a sponsor to support them in the form of The Loughborough Concert Band. Each year the band holds concerts in various locations and funds raised from their events are donated to local charities. This year the band has selected the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders as their chosen charity. Bob Lilley the Coordinator for the Community First Responder scheme said, “ This is brilliant news for our scheme.

We rely on public contributions to purchase equipment and protective clothing and uniform for the volunteers. Every penny will be spent to support the scheme’s work in the communities of Shepshed and Loughborough.

I would like to thank all the band members for their support”.

On Saturday 17th December 2016, Santa Claus will be in his grotto at The Crown Hotel, Market Place, Shepshed between 1pm and 9pm. This is with the kind permission of Lynda and John Savage of The Crown Hotel. Come along and see Santa Claus with a present for every child. The cost for each child to visit will be only £2.50. All proceeds will go to Shepshed Lions Club.

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are offering a talk and demonstration to groups to enable you to answer yes to all of these questions. Whilst there is no charge for this you are invited to make a contribution to the funds of the scheme to purchase more equipment, uniform and protective equipment. Senior Citizens were entertained in The Glenmore Centre, Thorpe Road, Shepshed by members of Shepshed Lions Club in the form of a three-course lunch, Bingo and music. There was also a raffle with the top prize of a Hamper of Goodies, and other prizes. A total of

65 guests attended the event, and a good time was had by all, including the volunteers. This annual event is designed to attract senior citizens who do not have the opportunities to go out on a regular basis.

This years Shepshed Lions Club 7th Annual Charity Carnival held on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August 2016 was a great success.

It is remarkable what a difference a little bit of sunshine can do!

We estimate that we had around 4000 people through the gates on the day, which is our best ever, attendance. A massive thank you to everyone who attended on the day for your fantastic support. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. It is very hard work to put such a Carnival together but we do it for our community. It is the largest event in the calendar for Shepshed Lions Club and I think it is appropriate now to thank all of the volunteers who help the members. Without their support it would be impossible to stage the event. Preparations for Shepshed Lions Club 8th Annual Charity Carnival have already begun with arena acts for next years Carnival already booked.

We also greatly appreciate the support of local companies and sponsors who support our Carnival Again, without their generous support, we would not be able to provide the quality arena acts and other attractions that make up the

Carnival. Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Coalville Lions Club arrange this annual event, with the generous support of the Statutes Fair Operators. The guests had a great time, with their carers on rides at the fair.

Shepshed Rotary Club Christmas Tree Festival Once again Shepshed Rotary Club are holding their highly successful Annual Christmas Tree Festival, in St Botolph’s Church, Church Gate, Shepshed, LE12 9RJ.

Retirement Of Rev. Howard Ketton On the 15th and 16th of October Charnwood Road Baptist Church, Shepshed, said good bye to their much loved Minister Howard Ketton and his wife Hilary after 12 years of faithful service to God at the church. A service of celebration followed by tea attended by 150 plus people took place on the Saturday when they were presented with a cheque from the congregation, a Mont Blanc fountain pen for Howard and a rose and garden vouchers for Hilary. They also received a picture which had been made by the Banner Group depicting many aspects of their ministry and a photo book containing pictures of the numerous activities that have been enjoyed over the years.

Church member Alan Todhunter spoke movingly about Howard and Hilary, saying all he things that everyone felt, before the presentation was made. Members of other churches, Cllr Claire Poole and members of the community also attended. We were particularly pleased to welcome two of Howard’s friends from his college days, Rupert Lazar who is now the Baptist Union President, and Mark Clay, soon to be Regional Minister, together with the present Regional Minister Dianne Tidball and her husband Derek.

On Sunday morning Dianne Tidball preached to a full church and the children presented Hilary with a special card made by the all the children thanking her for her many years of work with them in the Sunday Club. Howard led the service and preached his last sermon, again to a full church, in the evening. The church were very sad to see them leave because they have been such a blessing to so many over the years but know that friendships made will continue. Now the Deacons and congregation will be looking forward to the next chapter in the life of the church and the task of finding a new Minister.

Shepshed Community Choir Hi everyone, I wanted to write a few words about Serenade Shepshed Women's Community Choir.

My friend and I joined this group in 2015 - it was, as I remember, half way through their rehearsals for the Christmas concert.

At first it seemed very strange as we were learning different tunes and really singing as we had never sung before. But I have to say I have met some lovely ladies - they are all very friendly and made my friend and I feel very welcome.

I didn't take part in the Christmas concert as I didn't feel confident enough, but I was in the audience, and boy! It gave me such inspiration, and I vowed I would be in the next concert.

The team who run the choir, Keleigh, Nicole and Vanessa support us all the way and give us confidence. There is absolutely no pressure on anyone and no audition to join; we rehearse on Monday nights at Shepshed High School, at 7:30pm and the sessions are only £3. I for one thoroughly enjoy Monday's

rehearsals and we raise lots of money for various charities which is brilliant.

This year we raised £2500 for the Shepshed Volunteer Centre, an amazing amount of money which will be used to provide services for the most vulnerable and isolated people in Shepshed and surrounding villages.

The cheque was presented to Angie Whitmore, co-ordinator at Shepshed Volunteer Centre at our recent AGM. Angie Whitmore (right) collecting the cheque from Keleigh Atkin.

We are now starting to prepare for our Christmas performances, rehearsals for this start after the October half term. We will also be doing a nursing home tour to sing to the elderly and those who require long term care.

Shepshed Community Nativity Encouraged by the success of previous years, the 3rd Shepshed Community Nativity is aiming to further broaden its appeal for 2016. The event will include a range of festive music for all ages with opportunities for the audience to sing along.

Admission is free and there will be a raffle with attractive prizes for people attending. All proceeds of the occasion will be donated to the Shepshed Food Bank.

Highlight of the evening is to be ‘The Christmas Story’ written and directed by Shepshed’s Robin Popley and featuring well-known local personalities. Robin explains.

The 3rd Shepshed Community Nativity will run for one night only on Friday 2nd December beginning at 7.30pm. The venue will be St Botolph’s Church by kind permission.

Starting Rite Comes To Shepshed

Bell Ringers Needed At St Botolph’s

Imagine yourself sitting crosslegged next to three mums with babies on laps in a blackout tent in semi-darkness. Around the tent are several electric tea lights giving pockets of flickering yellow glow. The babies reach for the tealights, enfold them in their hands and shove them straight into their mouth! While the tealight munching is going on, you and the other parents talk about the choices their children can make in life. What would be the best choice? Or the worst? In answer to the latter, one mum says ‘if (W) decided not to speak to me for some reason’. She talks about relatives who stopped talking to each other, the pain and the hurt involved and what that would feel like as a parent. She has (perhaps unwittingly) just touched on one of the aspects of God’s relationship with his people.

The bells at St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed are considered to be one of the best sets of eight bells in the county of Leicester.

Welcome to Starting Rite.

Starting Rite is a five session Christian based nurture course aimed at carers with babies under the age of one. It borrows from the approach of the many ‘baby-focused’ courses available for new parents, but has a more explicit focus on the spiritual nurture of very young children. It provides an environment in which carers can spend one-to-one time with their babies and gives them opportunities to think about and ask questions about their child’s spiritual life and development.

At different stages of the course, there is time for exploration of some of the symbols and terminology of baptism.

The sessions last an hour and a half, in a very relaxed and informal atmosphere, with a particular emphasis on the baby.

There are activities and songs, along with the all-important coffee.

St Botolph’s Church will be offering a Starting Rite course, starting in January 2017 on a Monday afternoon.

In order to use this valuable asset to both the Church and the town to its full potential, St Botolph’s needs new recruits to join its bell ringing team. To enable us to ring all eight bells regularly, allowing for occasions when people will be absent from ringing through illness, holidays, etc., we would need a core of around twelve ringers. At present, this number is reduced to five or six, so we are desperately short of people. In order to attract new recruits, the Church tower will be open for anyone who might be interested, on Saturday 26 November, from 10:00 to 12:30, in conjunction with the Christmas Tree Festival in Church, and the Christmas Market in the Church Hall. If anybody is interested, who is not able to attend on this occasion, then please contact the Tower Captain (details below), or leave a message via St Botolph’s Parish Office.

Ringing is unique in giving opportunities to people of all ages for not only physical exercise, but also mental challenges, team working, musical and architectural appreciation, travel opportunities, and all this at little or no cost to the individual. It does not require a great deal of physical exertion – the hardest part is climbing the stairs.

Nor is it intellectually demanding – the only necessity is to be able to count. There is no spiritual prerequisite, although you could add this to the list of opportunities if you wished to do so.

After a short period (usually a few weeks) of training, the only commitment will be to attend as often as possible to ring for Church services – 9:30 am for the 10:00 am service every Sunday, and 5:30 pm for the 6:00 pm service on the first two Sundays

of the month. In addition to this, our main practices take place on Friday evenings, and finish by 9:00 pm. There will also be the opportunity to take part in ringing for special events and services, such as weddings, or occasions of local or national celebration or commemoration, together with ringing at other Churches, with ringers from elsewhere. Work in ringing has also been used by some young people in connection with their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

To those who have never witnessed ringing, the motion of a bell rope may seem somewhat alarming. However, we take safety and safeguarding seriously, working in cooperation with the Church authorities. The person who will be instructing will be a skilled ringer with many years of experience, and tutors who teach ringing to young and vulnerable people will be DBS (formerly known as CRB) checked.

When the bells ring out on Sundays from St Botolph’s tower, the message is being sent out that all the Churches in the town – not just St Botolph’s – are active in Shepshed. With the help of more people, this will be able to continue for years to come.

Shepshed Kick Off The New Season With 2 Wins Shepshed RFC Announce Sponsorship Deal With Manheim During October Manheim Shepshed announced its new sponsorship deal with Shepshed RFC. Club Chairman Nick Farmer, Captain Darren Perry and Media Secretary Tom Pitt posed for a “line out” photo when they dropped into the centre on the rostrum to collect their new kit.

More than 20 jobs were available to local people when Manheim made the decision to recommission the site on Charnwood Road in January 2016.

Manheim invested a seven-figure sum into recommissioning the site – which it last occupied in 2012 before the operation moved to a new multi-million pound facility in Bruntingthorpe.

Shepshed History Society October 11th saw Shepshed History Society having an enjoyable 2 part talk on Leics. old fashioned transport. Mr Mike Greenwood began by explaining and showing slides on the work of the Leics. Transport Heritage Museum that is set up in Leicester.

Similar to the Great Central Railway venture, this society rescues very old vehicles, mainly buses and restores them to an excellent high standard. So it was intriguing to see the many different makes of buses that had come into being over the years and quite a few that some of us could remember.

The second half of the meeting was a talk given by Mr John Bennett also of the society but he focused on Shepsheds old bus

RFC’s ‘equipment sponsor’ Manheim’s kit will experience tough punishment; protecting the players from the rugby posts….. or is it the other way round?! The synergies for us were clear; with Manheim’s parent company Cox Automotive always looking for new ways to show support for local communities. The longer term plan is for Team Shepshed to use its charity days to help renovate the clubhouse and ‘Share The CV Love’.”

Tom Pitt, Media Secretary for Shepshed RFC said "The generosity shown by Manheim to help us obtain this vital bit of equipment has been overwhelming. Since the fire at the container we've been working hard to replace items of equipment that were destroyed.

The post protectors which Manheim have provided for us, which are of international quality, are extremely expensive and would have taken us a long time to get a hold of. Manheim truly have gone above and beyond to help provide professional equipment which will stand the club in good stead for a good few seasons" services. And much to everyones enjoyment he showed numerous slides previously unseen by the general public of the various bus services that frequented Shepshed and surrounding area.

He went on to explain that many companies unable to cope with the spiraling costs of running these services that most of them ended up being sold out to the Midland Red bus company.

Happily for us Mr Michael Wortley had kindly loaned some photographs for the evening as well, so the evening was a great success.

The November meeting will be held by Mrs Helen Baxter, the subject to be the origins of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation that is based up in Ulverscroft. The meeting will be open up at 7-30 at the Glenmore Centre on Nov. 8th and everyone is welcome.

Shepshed RFC began the new season with away games against Aylestone St James and Vipers. Following a good pre-season with new players joining and former players returning Shepshed have a strong squad to make a statement that the club is back following a difficult season off the pitch last year.

Newly appointed first team captain Darren Perry has put in a lot of work to build up the team spirit around the club and it has paid off in the first games with good numbers and strong teams put together.

The first game against Aylestone St James 2nd XV (Jimmie’s 2s) ended in a 35-10 victory with tries scored by Darren Perry, Lee Joynes, Dan Nassau, Harry Nassau and Matthew Campsall complimented by 4 conversions from Blake Turner.

The second game was against Vipers 3rd XV in Blaby and was hard fought game throughout. Vipers took a 15-8 lead at half time but 3 quick fire tries in the second half set Shepshed on the path to a 36-20 victory.

Tries scored by Harry Nassau (x2), Lewis Flack, Ben Newcombe and Tom Pitt. Blake Turner was efficient with the boot again scoring 1 penalty and 4 out of 5 conversions.

The first home game of the season is against Loughborough Social at Shepshed High School on September 24th.

Fruit Trees The nights are drawing in and the garden is returning to it’s winter slumber, but it doesn’t mean we should turn our attention away from the garden entirely. The autumn is the best time to plant trees in the garden so that they have a good chance to establish before the ground warms up again in the spring.

Bare-root trees are often seen for sale in garden centres and supermarkets, available very cheaply. I have seen fruit trees on sale at our local supermarket for as little as £4.50 this year! Bareroot means that the trees have been grown in a field and then dug up when they are dormant in the autumn/winter and the soil knocked off from around their roots. Fruit trees are not only productive they can be decorative too with their lovely blossom.

If you fancy growing a few fruit trees in your garden then this could be the best and most cost effective way of doing so.

There are a few key things I’d recommend doing before you exchange with any money.

1. Find a suitable spot in the garden. Most fruit trees need an open site with good fertile soil which is neither sodden nor bone dry. Consider the amount of space you have. For small gardens and pots choose dwarf varieties which will grow to around 2m. For those with plenty of space you can afford to go for larger more prolific fruiting trees.

6. Planting – the roots need to be beneath the soil surface once you have finished so place the tree the hole with the base of the trunk level with the surrounding soil surface. Spread out the root system and then fill in making sure there are no air pockets. Check the levels then top up and level the ground, firming the soil in around the roots.

3. Choose the varieties carefully.

It’s best to select self-fertile varieties for small gardens as these will pollinate themselves and produce fruit without needing another tree close by. Non selffertile trees will need a partnering tree which flowers at the same time in order for it to bear fruit.

7. Care & attention – Water the tree immediately after planting and repeat occasionally if the weather is dry and we have no significant rainfall in the following couple of months. Stake the tree with a post tall enough to stabilise the lower third of the tree. Attach a soft rubber tree tie to both.

Over the next year check the tree tie is not too tight.

4. Select healthy plants. The trees are usually wrapped in plastic, If you can take a look at the roots to check they have not become really dry and brittle. Check there has been no damage from being badly handled or from the rubbing against each other.

5. Prepare the soil well. When the ground is not overly wet of frozen, dig over the ground removing all of the weeds. Add plenty of compost/manure to the soil and turn over to incorporate.

Add a fertiliser like Growmore or Bonemeal to encourage growth.

Dig out a hole larger than the spread of the roots.

Choose your favourite so you can be sure that the fruit won’t go to waste and if you spend a lot of time away during the summer months you may miss the fruit cropping time, so apples would be a better choice as they crop in late summer-autumn.

I have seen their last two productions which were really excellent. This year’s performance will again be held at Hind Leys from Tuesday 8th until Friday 11th November with a matinee performance on Saturday 12th November. I remember during my visit to the Toy Library being amazed at just how many toys and games were available to borrow and the wide variety for all ages.

Victorian Christmas Market At Shepshed A warm friendly atmosphere welcomes those who come to Shepshed’s Victorian Christmas Market in St Botolph’s Church Hall on Saturday 26th November. The Hall will be ‘decked with boughs of holly,’ with stall holders in appropriate dress.

Santa has it in his diary to arrive just after the opening at 10.00am, carrying small gifts for the children --- he is hoping to be as busy as in 2015, when he spoke to over seventy little ones!

I have been contacted by residents about several areas which are particularly notorious for speeding traffic in Shepshed.

The areas most recently raised with me are Tickow Lane and also the road between Hathern and Shepshed. In addition there is very poor visibility getting out of Northwood Road. I am in dialogue with the County Council about these spots but if you have any further thoughts on these areas (or any others) please do let me know.

I know that planning matters continue to be of concern to Shepshed residents. Although Charnwood Council’s core strategy is now in place there are individual applications which residents want assistance with and also applications where conditions need to be discharged or amended. I work closely with your four borough councillors who represent you at the planning authority and will be able speak to planning officers and ask for applications to be considered by the Plans Committee if appropriate. I know the Town Council is also vigilant on these matters too. usual prize winning opportunities with a Grand Prize Draw, and a ‘prize every time tombola’, Books, jewellery, toys, Christmas decorations, homemade cakes and preserves will feature on other stalls.

Refreshments will be on sale from the time the Market opens, with many people choosing to stay for lunch --- in the past bacon butties and lemon meringue pies have been great favourites!

There is no charge for entry, or car parking, and the Market closes at 2.00pm. Proceeds are for the work of the Church in the community of Shepshed.

St Botolph’s Church ‘ corner’ of Shepshed will be very busy that weekend. As well as the Market, Shepshed Rotary Club are holding their Christmas Tree Festival over the three days in the Church.

The exhibition starts on Tuesday 8th November till Tuesday 29th November and is free to visit at the Shepshed Library and can be seen during normal library opening hours.

CHRISTINE RADFORD As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council.

Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc.

Planning – Tickow Lane The majority of planning falls under the remit of Charnwood, but as your County Councillor I have raised concerns on a number of occasions about the need for a further Primary School to cater for the increase of primary age children from Phase 2 of the development on Tickow Lane. I am of the opinion that to expect young children to walk to Newcroft or St Botolphs is not acceptable when Oxley is full which it will be sooner rather than later.

The small woodland plantation is located opposite the Cropston Reservoir. Currently the woodland is fenced and inaccessible, but a new path into the heart of the space from the main carriageway will be suitable for all visitors.

As part of the proposals the woodland will be fenced with traditional parkland deer fencing, new hedgerow planted and the wildlife value of the area enhanced with new glades and trees planted. Natural paths within the woodland will allow people to explore the wood, whilst seating, and a central feature will ensure there is an area for quiet reflection and remembrance.

I am also of the opinion that the infrastructure needs addressing before further development goes ahead. I did manage to get as part of the approval a zebra crossing on Anson Road.

Bradgate Park is regularly asked about opportunities for memorial trees and benches with plaques, but the nationally important landscape and heritage designations of the site means they cannot accommodate these.

This is a way that Bradgate Park can provide somewhere for visitors to remember someone special, with a memorial plaque within a dedicated space.

Please be assured I try my hardest to get best for the residents of Shepshed, but this does not always work out if County officers do not agree.

As your County Councillor I sit as a Trustee on the Bradgate Park Trust and I am sitting on this subcommittee for the Memorial Wood.

Bradgate Park – Memorial Wood Local and national Freemasons are supporting Bradgate Park Trust in launching a new initiative to enhance a small woodland at the Park to establish a Memorial Woodland. Work is due to start on a year-long programme to create a tranquil and reflective space.

We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues.

PLANNING – P/16/2143/2 – Land off Tickow Lane rear of Conway Drive for the erection of 114 dwellings.

Your Ward Cllrs Radford and Tassell have written in objecting to certain aspects of the above application. Outline planning has already been approved for 380 houses on this site and this is Phase 11. Unfortunately this was approved prior to the approval of the Core Strategy which stated Shepshed already had it fair share of houses.

When the initial application for 380 houses was proposed we held a public meeting at the Glenmore Centre, too which local residents were invited. We hand delivered an invite to houses in the area. Our main concerns were the loss of good agricultural land, the need for a further primary school; and that the roads and infrastructure was inadequate for such a large development.

This current application we feel does not comply with certain planning policies, such as EV/1 – Design, EV/20 – Landscaping within new Developments (This is too dense), H/16 – Design and Layout within New Housing Developments, RT/6 – Design of new play areas (there is not open space or play area proposed for Phase 11)

We are also concerned about the Foul and Storm Water drainage proposals.

Cllr Radford managed to get Tree Preservation Orders (TPO’s) on the majority of the mature trees, but both Cllr Radford and Tassell have concerns about the hedgerows which are now proposed to be removed.

We are also concerned with particular regard to the positioning of the social housing.

Unfortunately as this site already has outline planning approval we can only try and mitigate the impact on existing properties in Conway Drive area.

We ask that residents object in the strongest possible way as further developments even those which have outline approval this affects all of us without the adequate infrastructure to support it.

50th Anniversary Action Man Weekend 50th Anniversary Action Man Weekend to be held in the former offices of the Palitoy factory on 3rd and 4th December.

Palitoy was an important employer in Coalville from 1937 to 1986 marketing such toys as Tiny Tears, Tressy, Pippa, Girls World, Star Wars, Care Bears, Mainline Railways as well as Action Man and Action Force.
