WELCOME TO YOUR NOVEMBER ISSUE As Autumn is well and truly upon us thoughts are turning to Christmas and festive family gatherings. I know that Christmas can be a time of stress and anxiety especially for those of us with large families and for me, as mum to three boys, it’s all in the planning! Lists become my best friend and every hiding place in my house is full of bags and boxes.

This month we have included a fun Christmas cake recipe which is perfect for family parties especially for those with children. Our competitions have also got a festive feel with a miniature Christmas tree up for

grabs and also a stocking full of children’s gifts!

Bel is helping us get our gardens ready for winter and we also have some lovely events happening across the town so do get involved and pop along to support our local groups.

I spent some time last month talking to shop owners on the outskirts of the town and offering them our support to attract new customers from the town centre. It was so sad to hear quite how many customers are now not walking beyond the centre. Our Shop Local pages will offer low cost advertising

Memorial to the Victims of the Zeppelin Raid on Loughborough 31st January 1916 The Loughborough Carillon Tower & War Memorial Museum and Charnwood Arts have commissioned a new memorial to honour the victims of the raid and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outrage.

The memorial will take the form of a large bronze plaque (40 x 48 inches) the artwork was done by Mr Paul Gent and the plaque will be cast by Taylors Bell Foundry.

The cost will be £6000.00, Loughborough University have already donated £750.00 and the Carillon Museum have given £1000.00 towards the cost but we need your help to raise the remaining money.

SHEPSHED AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB SHEPSHED HISTORY SOCIETY The 13th October saw the Shepshed History society having an exceedingly interesting and thought provoking talk given by Mr Mel Gould on the Zeppelin raid that took place in Loughborough during the first world war.

The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club held their fourth competition league event of 2015 in early October at Shepshed Council Offices and were honoured to welcome Ralph Duckett, MPAGB EFIAP APAGB for the first time as the judge for the occasion.

SHEPSHED'S BEST KEPT SECRET Shepshed Toy Library first started in 1984 at the Shepshed Town council offices. In 1993 it moved to the mobile annex on the Hind Leys Campus where it has been since.

The hidden treasures of the toy library continue to amaze every visitor with over 2000 quality toys and games for you to borrow for children 0-11 years.

From Jumperoos to junior slides, sensory toys to play kitchens. For a small membership fee the only tricky part is deciding what toys to take home! After all that choosing,

little ones can enjoy the 'Stay and Play' while you have a refreshing drink and browse the craft shop.

A warm welcome awaits you Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:30-12 term time, and the last Thursday of the month 6:307:30pm. Four exciting toys can be borrowed at a time for 3 weeks and if they are such a hit with the kids you can simply phone up to renew the items.

Other services include party room hire with your choice of toys included, toy hire for your own party and photocopying.

Zeppelins first came into existence in 1900 when Count Von Zeppelin designed the famous gas driven air machines. These monstrous machines finally came into their own when the first world war broke out and they were sent on missions to bomb Britain.

They were the size of two football pitches put together and carried at least thirty or more balloons filled with gas in their huge aluminium frames. The ling of these balloons were made from the insides of cows and were extremely tough. Two gondoliers fastened below the cigar shaped vehicle housed the crew with a marksman perched perilously on the very top of the structure.

And so it was on the 31st January 1916 when 9 Zeppelins were sent to bomb Liverpool. However one machine lost its way and finally flew over Loughborough where upon seeing the college building in Greenclose Lane the navigator took it to be a factory and aimed the first bomb. This though came to land in the backyard of the nearby Crown and Cushion Pub. The second bomb then fell in the Rushes and the third one in Judges Street. This third bomb had been aimed at Morris' factory but it did miss it. To this day there are still shrapnel marks on a nearby house.

Sadly the death toll was 10 civilians who lost their lives on that fateful night and at the moment plans are afoot to have a brass plaque made

by Taylors Bell Foundry at the cost of £6,000 to commemorate the names of these poor unfortunate citizens. This tragedy had not been helped by local people not heeding the blackout orders which plunged the town into total darkness and local factories had brazenly uncovered their glass roofs (previously covered over to hide the light) so that workers could see to do their work in better conditions. Mr Gould then expounded even further as the night continued on the escapades of these awesome air machines consequently members became even more acquainted with the history of these ill fated machines that soon became extinct due to their vulnerability in combat and which proved to be very unsatisfactory all round.

The November meeting on the 10th at Glenmore Community Centre sees Mrs Sally Henshaw giving a talk on Nell Gwyn and everyone is welcome.

SHEPSHED TOWN COUNCIL LABOUR GROUP SHEPSHED UPDATE This is our first update since taking control of Shepshed Town Council. Firstly we would like to thank Joan Tassel for all her hard work as the outgoing chairperson of the Town Council. As you are probably aware by now, Claire Poole was elected to the office of chairperson of the Town Council for the coming year and Jane Lennie was elected as Vice Chairperson.

It has been a busy five months since Labour took control of the Town Council. The Chair and Vice Chair have attend many events in and around Shepshed – Claire opened the Shepshed Carnival and Jane opened the new post office on Charnwood Road in August.

Many residents have been concerned about the state of play equipment in Shepshed so Myriaim Roberts and Glenys Timson, chair and vice chair of the Estate and Recreations Committee have attended every play area in Shepshed and have reported back to the Town Council. The Labour group will be looking into this matter further with the intention of making all the play equipment safe and in good order for our local children as safety is our priority. The swings at Cambridge Street have already been painted as they were in such poor condition.

There are many concerns from local residents in Shepshed about the speeding and sheer volume of traffic going through Shepshed at certain times of the day. The police constable for Shepshed reported to the full parish meeting on speeding on certain roads in Shepshed and enforcement action has been taken against speeding motorists.

You can be assured that the Labour group has this issue as a top priority and will continue to pressure the Conservative County Councillor Christine Radford for more funds and police for Shepshed to combat the speeding problem in our area.

There is also the local community speed watch that has reported this issue to the local police – it is something that we believe should be taken more seriously.

It was also suggested by Conservative Councillor Joan Tassel at one of the recent council meetings that certain roads should be made one way in Shepshed.

Whilst it is something that the Labour group don’t currently support, we would never discount any idea that could improve Shepshed for local residents.

The Labour group in Shepshed has been continually against the un-bridled housing in and around Shepshed. It was a major disappointment that the Conservative-run Charnwood Borough Council allowed the planning application to be given the green light for Garendon Park. What was even more disappointing was that the Conservative councillors in Shepshed were indicating that they were against the plans for the building on Garendon Park but in the end one of their councillors voted in favour of letting the plans go through.

Shepshed Labour Councillors hold a monthly surgery at the Town Council office the second Saturday of each month from 11am until 12 noon, no appointment is necessary please feel free to come along as we are always happy to help.

ST BOTOLPH’S RECORD BREAKING WIN The children at St Botolph’s are celebrating for the 6th year running after winning the Shepshed library summer challenge!

Shepshed Library hosted their annual summer holiday reading challenge inspiring children to continue their reading throughout the summer break. This year’s theme was Record Breakers and it certainly proved to be a record breaking success for St Botolph’s.

Reading for pleasure and story time is a core element of St Botolph’s ethos and so the children are always keen to get lost in a book even when they’re not in school. Phil Marriott,

MANHEIM PROPOSAL TO RESTART VEHICLE AUCTIONS AT SHEPSHED

Vehicle auction company, Manheim, is proposing to reopen its Shepshed auction centre, located on Charnwood Road, between Springfield Road and Anson Road, for the sale of commercial vehicles.

The proposal, which would involve a seven-figure investment to recommission the site, could create local jobs and deliver further local economic benefit from customers visiting the site. Shepshed was previously used as a car auction site up until 2012, and last sold commercial vehicles in 1989.

Shepshed Art Group formed in 2013 has been meeting twice weekly at Livio’s Italian Restaurant in The Hall Croft in Shepshed. It is a mixed ability group ranging from absolute beginners to experienced ones.

The group are exhibiting at Livio's and are holding a coffee morning on Friday 13th November from 10 to 12.30. All proceeds from the

coffee morning will go to Hope Against Cancer.

On display will be examples of the group's artwork including drawing, watercolours and acrylics. The group is run by artist and illustrator Val Singh and the artists are encouraged to develop a firm foundation in drawing and transfer these skills to colour work.

Chair of Governors, who also has governor responsibility for English in the school, said, “The children’s love of books and story time play an important part in their love of learning. It’s inspiring to see just how many completed the reading challenge throughout the summer.” Every year Mrs Pepper, Head Teacher, encourages all of the children to be a part of the challenge and represent St Botolph’s. This year was no different and almost 50% of the children completed the Record Breaker Summer 2015 challenge. The children were overjoyed with their success and winning the cup again for the 6th year running. Mrs Pepper said, “We are so proud of the children showing us just how much they enjoy reading. Throughout the school we promote reading for pleasure and this 6th successive win demonstrates that the children continue to be inspired.”

The proposal has been made following a period of significant growth in the company's commercial vehicle auction volumes. The increase in commercial vehicles on UK roads has increased largely due to the rapid growth in online shopping, driven by British consumers. Home delivery by department stores has risen 53% since 2011, and online

food shopping – with ‘store-todoor’ delivery – has increased 37% over the same period.

If the proposal goes ahead, auctions will take place on weekdays, within working hours, with a typical auction completed in less than three hours. Vehicle arrivals occur in pre-booked delivery slots to maximise efficiency.

If the site is reopened, it would pull in a significant number of customers, which would be very likely to inject economic benefit into the local area.

Tim Hudson, managing director for Manheim Remarketing, said “Our proposal to restart vehicle auctions at Shepshed would see the creation of a unique and strategic commercial vehicle sale site in the UK. Since car auctions left the site in 2012, we have been committed to ensuring that it plays a productive role in the community.”

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS MARKET AT SHEPSHED St. Botolph’s Church Hall (Shepshed) is going to be ‘decked’ for the Victorian Christmas Market to be held on Saturday, the 28th November.

The doors open at 10 o’clock, entrance is free. Santa will arrive soon afterwards the opening, bringing a supply of gifts to hand out to the children whilst listening to their requests. Once again it is planned to ‘deck the hall with boughs of holly’; to decorate the stalls appropriately; and for the stall holders will do their best to look Victorian! All in all an attractive, welcoming warm atmosphere will pervade.

It is a certainty that people will be able to tick a number of items off their Christmas presents’ lists as there are to be a wide variety of stalls selling an even wider assortment of quality gift ideas.

As always, the expert bakers and cooks from St. Botolph’s congregation will sell delicious cakes and preserves. In addition, people always enjoy browsing through the second-hand books, and finding a bargain amongst the toys, jewellery and toiletries.

It is inevitable that visitors will be attracted to the opportunities to win ‘something,’ be it in the Grand Prize Draw or the tombola.

Whoever win the lovely Christmas hampers will be very thrilled. Hot dogs, bacon butties, filled cobs, desserts and drinks will be sold.

People can sit and enjoy these before doing a second round of the stalls.

The Christmas Market is a great social occasion with visitors sitting enjoying the lunches, bacon butties are especially popular! The event ends at 2.00pm.

Entry is £2 and Children free.

All proceeds are filtered back into the local Community.

Structure

Agar Nook Community Centre is run by a charity called Agar Nook Community Association (ANCA).

This charity is made up of people from the local community residents, centre users and local representatives who: • Help organise events like Fun Days and day trips • Support volunteers that work at the Centre • Help manage finance, health, safety and training • Promote the centre and encourage people to use it • Fundraise to make money to support the centre • Set up projects to help people in the community • Work with other agencies that offer advice • Provide a friendly, safe place for everyone to use • Help and support people dealing with problems • Provide lots of fun activities for people to try out • Provide activities that will help educate and train The charity is run by a Management Committee, who meets every month to discuss the progress of projects and make decisions about future plans for the Community Centre. Smaller teams work on other projects in between meetings. Although EMH Homes own the building the Management Committee leases the building from them. This means that the centre is managed by people in the community and

every care is taken to keep people who use the Community Centre safe and happy.

Emhhomes have over three hundred properties on the Agar Nook Estate. They have a keen interest in supporting this community because it is in an area of high deprivation and houses many families with complex needs. As a result Emhhomes recognises the need to have a community venue that can be used by their residents.

Emhhomes employ a part-time Development Worker and Caretaker that are based at the Community Centre and also offer a grant to ANCA to support young people’s activities. Under the terms of the lease agreement emhhomes also maintain the property, keep it secure and offer financial support and advice.

Preschool History

For over twenty five years a playgroup ran from the Community Centre hall as a Social Enterprise. However in 2012 the manager had to leave which threatened the future delivery of the playgroup. The proprietor of a childcare company offered to take over the running of the playgroup which became “Little Kangaroos Preschool”. In May 2013 the preschool was given ‘Satisfactory’ in the Ofsted inspection. As a result of the inspection, plans were put in place to move the preschool to a more suitable place with free flow outside space. The numbers of children attending

preschool remained stable for the first two years. The preschool operated five days a week, Monday to Friday 9 to 12 noon, term-time only. However, over the last academic year the number of children attending dropped, leaving only five children to start at the commencement of the academic year (September 2015-16). As a result, four staff were made redundant, with the intention that the proprietor and manager would run the preschool themselves. However, the proprietor has decided not to return, so ANCA are looking for someone else to take over Little Kangaroos.

During the summer holidays the preschool premises moved into a new area of the Community Centre, which has been purpose built for preschool provision.

Over £10,000 has been invested in alterations by David Wilson Homes with extra work done by the Emhhomes building team to the new nursery/preschool which proves the commitment of both ANCA and Emhhomes to keep this valuable resource at the Community Centre.

What Next?

The closing date for the Expression of Interest is Friday November 6th at 5 pm. We will be short listing our applicants on Tuesday November 10th and if we feel we could work with you further we will invite you to come and showcase your proposed nursery/preschool on Saturday November 14th (time tba).

ANCA will seek to establish a good working relationship with the new proprietors of the nursery/preschool, one that will benefit everyone, but especially the children. We envisage that a room hire agreement and Service Level Agreement (SLA) will be established, based on the needs

We also hope that you will play an active role in the activities and associated fund raising of the Community Centre.

We will look favourably on applications from room hirers that want to establish the nursery/preschool business as a Social Enterprise.

Once you have seen the preschool, Community Centre and the Agar Nook Estate and are still interested in running Little Kangaroos, then please send us an Expression of Interest; a brief outline of what you have to offer and how you would like to deliver a nursery/ preschool from this setting. If we like what we read, we will ask you to deliver a presentation and discuss things further.

CHRISTMAS TREE

Bake to impress with this stunning edible centrepiece - perfect for a Christmas party buffet, or as an alternative to Christmas pudding FOR THE CUPCAKES

METHOD

• 200g butter, softened • 200g golden caster sugar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 eggs • 200g self-raising flour • 2 tbsp milk

FOR THE ICING

• 300g butter • 525g icing sugar • 3 tsp vanilla extract • Green food colouring • Sweets, to decorate • Large white chocolate star • Edible gold spray • 24-hole mini muffin tin • 48 green mini-muffin cases • Small plant pot or mini bucket (roughly 13cm across the top) • 12cm foam cone (measured across base) • Cocktail sticks • Green paint

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line the muffin tin with the muffin cases. Put half the butter, sugar and vanilla in a bowl, and beat until pale and fluffy. Add one egg and mix well. Add half the flour and milk, and mix with a spatula until combined. Use 2 teaspoons to distribute the cake mixture evenly among the cases and bake for 12 mins until risen and golden, and a skewer inserted to the centre comes out clean.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Repeat to make another batch of 24 mini cakes.

While the cakes are cooling, make the icing. Put the butter and icing sugar in a bowl and beat until smooth. Add the vanilla and food colouring, and blend again until evenly coloured. Transfer the icing to a piping bag fitted with a small star nozzle. Once the cakes have

cooled, use a skewer to make a small hole in the base of each cake. To decorate the cakes, pipe blobs of green icing over the surface of each one.

Now you’re ready to start assembling your Christmas tree.

Paint the foam cone all over with green paint and leave to dry – don’t worry about it being too neat. Push the cone into the pot. To build the tree, push a cocktail stick into the base of each cake and press it into the cone.

Continue until the cone is covered in cakes, trying to keep them as close together as possible. You may have some left over, which you can serve alongside the tree.

Spray the chocolate star gold and put on top of the tree, then decorate the rest of the tree with sweets. The cakes will last for about 3 days.

Choosing Garden Trees We’ve had a fairly dry autumn so far although it is now cooling off with misty mornings and showery spells. The bonus of this time of year is the soil still has some warmth from the summer and the soil is moist without being waterlogged. It’s the perfect conditions for planting all manner of plants whether they are container grown, loose bulbs or bare-root.

We’ll soon see trees being offered by nurseries garden centres.

Planted now whilst the weather is favourable, they have the opportunity to establish and settle in before the demanding spring and summer season is upon us.

There are several forms to look out for: Bare-root plants - The term bare-root applies to plants which have been grown in a field for several years before being lifted and the soil removed from their roots. Although this sounds like a brutal treatment, the plants cope perfectly well and you’ll also find that bare-root plants are the cheaper option.

Container grown - Container grown plants are a more widely available option. They tend to be more expensive but establish well and can be a safer option if you’re not green fingered. Look for well rooted plants which look health and have no signs of dead branches or diseases on the stems.

Root-balled plants are also an option. These are grown in a field like the bare-root plants but when they are lifted the soil around the roots is kept intact and then wrapped with hessian to protect it. Root-balling is generally carried out for evergreens rather than deciduous trees. Ensure that the root-balls have not been allowed to dry out at the nursery or prior to planting, otherwise they will struggle to establish and may drop their leaves in spring. So beware!

With the options reviewed, what varieties are there available to fit small to medium sized gardens?

Well there are lots to choose from, but I favour the following as they provide several seasons of interest.

Japanese Acers - There are so many varieties of these maples offered by nurseries, each with a different leaf shape, habit or colour. Ideal for growing in pots these prefer slightly acidic compost when planting. Heights vary but most are slow growing and make good trees for small – medium gardens. These are best bought container grown.

Hawthorn (aka Crataegus) - there are some lovely ornamental forms which are hardy, will tolerate less than ideal soil conditions and grow to make dense trees of around 12-18ft. Crateagus ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ has rich double pink blooms in early spring and golden foliage in autumn. Crataegus × lavalleei ‘Carrierei’ has large glossy leaves from March right through to December, white blooms in spring followed by masses of cherry sized orange berries in the autumn – a great tree for small gardens.

Ornamental Cherries (aka Prunus) – There are so many varieties available but I favour the simple forms like Prunus ‘Okame’ which flowers in Feb-March and the large ‘Tai Haku’ which is smothered in very large white blooms in spring. Both have fiery autumnal foliage colour.

It is surprising how the vertical structure of a tree can change the look of a garden. Visit your local centre/nursery to see what catches your eye. Christmas will soon me here so next month I’ll be looking at how to spruce up the home with festive table decorations.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service are currently undertaking a public consultation regarding their 2016/20 IRMP (Integrated Risk Management Plan) proposals.

• The removal of a fire engine from the Leicester City Area (now confirmed as (Western Fire Station) • The removal of the second fire engine from Oakham Fire Station • The removal of the Resilience Team • The introduction of the new Day Crewing Plus Duty System at Wigston Fire Station • The reduction of standard fire engine crewing levels from five to four • The introduction of new ‘pooled’ crewing arrangements for whole time stations.

One-Way System

The Town Team are looking at making certain roads within the centre of Shepshed One-Way. I wish to allay fears, nothing will be able to be done without consultation with officers from the County and following these talks then any proposals will go out for public consultation to enable Shepshed residents to have their say. Not only are they looking at a one way system but highlighting areas of concerns within the road structure in the whole of Shepshed such as the narrowness of road near to the junction of Belton Street with Pick Street, I am sure many of you will have other areas you are perturbed about, everybody will have the opportunity to comment.

Charnwood Core Strategy At a meeting of the Full Charnwood Borough Council is to be held on 9th November when the Core Strategy will be discussed and voted on.

The planning Inspectorate has submitted his report on the examination into the Charnwood Local Plan Core Strategy for the planning of the Borough 2011-2028. It is a rather long document but the Inspector does mention that there should be

no more growth in Shepshed in light of the significant number of commitments that already has approval.

Shepshed Eye October 2015 The Loughborough Wellbeing Project will be holding its second Wellbeing Cafe on Friday 6th November 2015 from 6pm-8pm at Loughborough Library. Access is via the rear entrance which will be signposted. Their first evening went well and it would be great to welcome more visitors. The age range is 18-30 but this is flexible.

Support workers are welcome to attend with their clients/service users as this may help them coming along for the time being.

We know there is interest from as far afield as Coalville.

LWP hope to be holding another arts session as the group had a great time doing doodle art at the first evening! They will also be offering a small range of snacks on a ‘pay what you can afford’ contribution towards the costs.

In early October the Secretary of State for Transport announced the electrification project, which had been paused, would be re-started. This is clearly an important project for our area signalling not only faster and cleaner trains and journeys to and from London but also means the other line improvement works which need to be carried out before the line is electrified will take place – including the straightening of the line at Market Harborough.

I spent a wonderful hour recently visiting the Hind Leys Preschool

and Natural Play Centre in Shepshed last week to see their Forest School. Unlike a “normal” learning environment, Hind Leys puts mud pies, a wood shop, fire pits and mindfulness at the heart of every piece of learning. Forest School is an inspirational process that offers young learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and selfesteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.

I had terrific fun taking part in the activities. The children loved every moment, and it is clear they are really making the most of this unique learning environment. The staff were brilliant and really made this a happy place for children to learn. I wish them every success for the future.

I was also delighted recently to cut the ribbon for one of Shepshed’s newest businesses – CHQ properties. Their small but perfectly decorated office offers a great welcome to new clients.

Good luck to them and it’s great to see their signs around town.

DONATION TO SIGHTSAVERS

Shepshed Lions Club has made a donation to Sightsavers. This is a charity that undertakes eye surgery and deals with preventable blindness with people of all ages all over the world. The donation will enable Sightsavers to undertake 100 cataract operations to prevent blindness.

TABLE DONATED TO LOROS AT SHEPSHED Following a request from volunteers based in Shepshed, who raise much needed funds for the LOROS Hospice, to replace their fundraising table which had seen better days Shepshed Lions Club stepped in and bought a good quality replacement table that was donated to the LOROS volunteers.

The Lions are sure this will be put to good use for such a worthy cause.

LIONS CLUB ANNUAL SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCH HAILED AS A GREAT SUCCESS Members of Shepshed Lions Club and other volunteers held a Senior Citizens Lunch at St Botolphs Church Hall on Saturday 3rd October 2015.

A total of 65 guests sat down to a 3-course lunch, drinks, Bingo, Music and a Raffle. This was the 4th time this popular event was held. Following feedback on the day from many of the guests and subsequently in cards and letters, the event has been hailed as a great success. Following the event Lions President Bob Lilley said “This annual event in Shepshed Lions Club’s calendar is popular with our guests, but also with the members and volunteers who help on the day. It is good to see our Senior Citizens enjoying themselves in a friendly, safe environment. Long may it continue”.

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB MEMBER DESCENDS TO A NEW LOW! Shepshed Lions Club Secretary Lynn Jackson descended to a new low on Saturday 17th October 2015, but it was all in a good cause. Lynn was invited to raise funds for Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough, so she decided to abseil from the top to the bottom of Derby Cathedral, a distance of 212 feet. This obviously not something Lynn has done before and she assures us that she will not do it again. As a result of her brave fund raising efforts a total in excess of £1000 was raised for the excellent work that the Rainbows Hospice undertakes. Shepshed Lions Club President said “Lynn has never done anything like this before but a great deal of credit goes to her for her bravery to raise a fantastic total for such a worthy cause.”

LOUGHBOROUGH HOSPITAL PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT RECEIVES VITAL EQUIPMENT LIONS CLUB SUPPORTS SHEPSHED VOLUNTEER CENTRE PROJECT Angie Whitmore who is the Manager of the Shepshed Volunteer Centre was invited to the monthly business meeting of Shepshed Lions Club where she gave a presentation to the members of the Lions about the work of the Volunteer Centre. She outlined details of the latest project that the Centre is undertaking, where they are building a Community Sensory Garden. Following the presentation, Shepshed Lions Club made a donation towards the development of the project. Shepshed Lions Club President Bob Lilley presented the cheque to Angie.

REMEMBER THE DATE FOR SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB CHRISTMAS MARKET Shepshed Lions Club are running a Christmas Market in The Hallcroft, Shepshed on Sunday 13th December 2015 between 10am and 6pm.

Please put the date in your diary. If the market is a success it is hoped that it will become an annual event. The market will comprise of stalls that will be selling Festive Goods, there will also be a Comic Street Entertainer, a Brass Band, Choirs singing Christmas Carols, and of course, Santa Claus will be there in his Christmas Grotto. Santa is due to arrive on his sleigh shortly after 10am.

Meet n’ Eat will be providing free tea and coffee all day for those attending the event. Robert Newbold Flooring has sponsored the Grotto for Santa.

Following a visit to the Loughborough Hospital Physiotherapy Department

by Shepshed Lions Club member Tony Irish, a joint project between Shepshed Lions Club, Loughborough Lions Club and the Hospital League of Friends was put together and a Defibrillator for the Department was purchased. Lion Tony found that there was a need for a Defibrillator in case of a Cardiac Arrest. As there was not one in the Department the staff had to dial 999 and call for an ambulance. This could result in a delay in vitally urgent treatment being delivered. The Defibrillator is now in situ in the Department. Staff will still dial 999 but now staff in the Physiotherapy Department can provide urgent immediate care.

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN Plans are well advanced for the Shepshed Lions Club Annual Santa Sleigh collection. The routes that Santa will be taking will be published in advance of the event. The visit of Santa Claus is an eagerly awaited event and is an important event in our Community and for Shepshed Lions Club. Santa will visit between Monday 7th December and Friday 18th December 2015.

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders will be 2 years old on 2nd December 2015. Since its inception the team of volunteers has grown from 8 to 18 active responders. The initial team worked in Shepshed but now the team has grown, they also cover Loughborough and the surrounding area. The responders play a vital role in the community and often arrive to help patients and their relatives and friends in times of need and distress. The CFR’s work in conjunction with the East Midlands Ambulance Service and are deployed by them in support of regular Ambulance Staff to attend incidents of Cardiac Arrest, Heart Attacks, Diabetic emergencies, breathing difficulties, Asthma Attacks, trauma and many other medical incidents. “SMILEY AND CHEEKY” JONAH IS THE FACE OF CHARITY CHRISTMAS SUPERDRAW Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, which provides care and support for families from Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Northamptonshire, has launched its annual Christmas raffle and you could scoop a top prize of £3,000.

Now in its ninth year, the Superdraw helps raise vital funds for Rainbows, the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people with life-limited and terminal illnesses.

Last year’s Superdraw helped Rainbows to raise over £25,000. By purchasing a raffle ticket, you are helping the hospice to raise the vital funds needed to keep Rainbows running each year.

This year’s campaign is being fronted by Jonah Ward, along with his siblings Lily (8), Adam (6) and Robyn (4). In his short life, two-year-old Jonah has endured 16 operations, suffered a cardiac arrest and will need a heart transplant in the future. But his parents say you couldn’t meet a more smiley, cheeky and loving boy than Jonah.

Before he was born, Jonah was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome – this means the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.

At just a few weeks old, Jonah suffered a massive bleed during surgery. He needed further operations and it became a waiting game for the family as Jonah slowly recovered. His lungs had collapsed and at six-monthsold he was fitted with a life-saving tracheostomy to be ventilated.

As he grows up, Jonah will need to undergo further operations, but until that time, his family live for each day.

His mum, Georgina, said “I couldn’t wish for a better little boy. I wish life was easier for him but he makes the most of what he has got and he

is such a cheeky little boy. He just loves being the centre of attention and making people laugh.”

At Rainbows Jonah can receive specialist care, his parents can benefit from respite support and his brother and sisters are involved in sibling activities.

“Rainbows is brilliant,” said Georgina. “At first we had reservations, but it was completely different to what we had imagined.

We know that end of life care is inevitable for Jonah but at least we know he loves Rainbows. We are really relaxed leaving him and we know he will be looked after by specialist carers and we can spend time with our other children.”

Gill Smitherman, Rainbows Lottery Manager, said “We’re delighted to have Jonah as the face of our Christmas Superdraw this year.

He loved taking part in the photo shoot with his brother and sisters, he just never stops smiling!”
