Shop Front Improvement Grants - Shepshed Town Team Following a meeting of Shepshed Town Team’s Committee to discuss Shop Front Improvement Grants, (£10,000 was given by Leicestershire County Council); Four more Local Businesses will be benefitting, making a total of Fourteen Businesses within the Town Centre.

Shepshed History Society Tuesday the 10th May Shepshed History Society was given an enjoyable and informative talk

by Professor John Martin on the problems faced with feeding the general public during world war two.

Since 1870 Britain had relied on 70% food imports to feed the nation including meat which was even frozen back in those days.

the ministry if you wished to do this. Rabbits were killed by the hundreds as this was free meat, although not as nourishing as other meats.

It was interesting as well to note that the minister of food at the time Lord Woolton advised people to use rhubarb leaves instead of cabbages, which of course are highly poisonous and he was noted for giving useless and very unwise advice to the nation in this time of crisis.

Come the war then with the enemy blockading cargo ships, other means had to be found to keep the nation fed and so 'Dig for Victory' became a well known slogan when householders were encouraged to dig up their lawns and flower beds to grow vegetables and even keep chicken and pigs in their primitive back gardens.

The basic diet of the nation then became potatoes and home grown wheat. We were denied access to the American wheat that we still use today for our bread, so we had to make use of own which was much courser. And so the Professor continued to give an interesting insight of just what the nation had to do to put nourishing food on the table.

Pig clubs were also a popular method of providing much needed meat, you could breed one for yourself and friends who would contribute to its food, and you had to rear another one for

Shepshed Ramblers Are held on the second Saturday of each month at Shepshed Town Council offices in Charnwood Road from 11am until 12 noon.

A New Chapter For The Nottingham’s Shepshed Branch

Kats Antiques Stars In Celebrity Antiques Road Trip

The Nottingham will hold its first book signing session when customer and local author Kevin J. Adcock visits his nearest branch with copies of his children’s title Adventures With Sir Maxwell.

Kevin, from Coalville, will be at the Shepshed branch on Saturday 28 May (10am to 12 noon) giving local youngsters the chance to pick up an autographed copy of the tale about a knight who may not be the smartest or strongest that ever lived!

The book signing – which will also include a reading by Kevin at 11am - is a new venture for The Nottingham but one that fits perfectly with the society’s ethos of being right at the heart of the community.

Customer Adviser Ria Cook said: “The book signing came about after Kevin, who is a customer, mentioned the idea. At first we were a bit taken aback as we are a building society and it’s not what we’d normally do but the more we thought about it the more it seemed like a good idea. It’s a chance to showcase the great products and services The Nottingham has to offer and the fantastic work of a popular local author.”

Shepshed Town Team Partnership Job Vacancy – Volunteer Post Chairperson Shepshed Town Team Shepshed Town Team has secured over £1/4 million to support investment in the regeneration of the town centre and is looking towards a brighter future for businesses and residents alike.

To seize new opportunities and steer Shepshed towards a more active and prosperous future the Town Team has adopted a new constitution and now seeks to appoint a new Chairperson to lead and prioritise the work of the Shepshed Town Team.

Retiring chair, Joan Tassell said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone with a desire to see our town centre grow and thrive to make a real difference. To date we have been successful in encouraging the Borough Council to commit £40,000 towards the production of the Shepshed Master Plan which has been critical in securing a £147,000 fund for investment in town centre improvements. We have also attracted £60,000 for shop front improvements and work has just begun on drawing up plans for the improvement of the Bull Ring and Field Street.”

The Town Team has provided a forum for bringing together representatives of all three Councils, businesses, residents and local interest groups in a spirit of partnership to share ideas and explore solutions. We have achieved so much as an informal consultative group but our new constitution gives us the platform to achieve much more and we want to throw open our doors to new blood and new talent. There is a volunteer secretary and an executive committee to support the Chairperson.

Shepshed Town Council Present A Cheque For £6000 For Shepshed Volunteer Centre

The Shepshed Town Team was originally established as a reference group in November 2012 to guide consultants in the preparation of the Shepshed Master Plan and Delivery Framework. The master plan was delivered in May 2013 and can be viewed on line at: www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/ shepsheddraftmasterplan The fund for town centre improvements (£147,000) has been assembled through contributions negotiated from developers associated with the development of new homes around Shepshed and secured through legal agreements under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

The job description and person specification will be available to anyone interested in the post of Chairperson from 11th July. The closing date for applications is 1st August.

Members hope to welcome the new Town Team Chairperson at the meeting following the appointment. All meetings are held at the Shepshed Town Council Offices at 6:30pm on Wednesdays. There are six full meetings per year and currently two committees meet approximately monthly about Markets and Traffic issues.

Volunteers and people who benefit from their services know that Shepshed Volunteer Centre is innovative and very busy. Being a volunteer is a lovely way to spend an hour or two and you can learn new skills too.

Shepshed Volunteer Centre and John Storer Charnwood would like to thank Shepshed Town Council for their continued and ongoing support of the centre and the services that run from here. Without the funding from Shepshed Town Council, the centre would not be able to run at the current levels of support to the local community and maintain our opening hours.

Shepshed Serenade Serenade is Shepshed’s community choir for Ladies and has had a busy few weeks during the Spring, with many new members joining and holding a Nursing home tour.

As a new member myself, I was warmly welcomed into the choir which boasts ladies of all ages and abilities with a love of singing.

The emphasis is on fun, and the musical director, Nicole Jordan, always has unique and often quirky methods of warming us all up before the singing really starts!

We sing songs old and new, some familiar, some not so familiar. The ladies in the group really look after the newer members, with lots of encouragement and help if you get lost along the way!

In April I took part in the Nursing home tour, which visited The Willows, Charnwood Oaks and Marwood and this was such an amazing experience! We sang lots of wartime songs for the residents to sing along to, and then enjoyed time afterwards to stay and have a chat with our audience. We were so warmly welcomed at all of

the homes and it was fantastic to see lots of smiles and memories coming back.

I am very excited to be taking part in the next concert entitled ‘Serenade sings through the decades’. There are 2 performances, one of which will be taking place at Thorpe Acre Church on June 13th, and the other at Shepshed High School on June 18th, starting at 7.30. The concert will include a variety of songs from each decade starting from the 1910’s to the present day so there is something for everyone.

Tickets cost just £5 for adults and £3 for children under 16, and under 5’s are free. All proceeds will go towards The Shepshed Volunteer Centre, Serenade's charity of the year for 2016.

If you interested in joining the choir, new members are always welcome, regardless of singing ability! We rehearse on Monday evenings 7.30 – 9pm at Shepshed High School and costs £3.00 per session. Emily Was Looking For Something That Was Never Lost

“I was convinced only famous people write memoirs. So it’s been a long time coming. For years I’ve been asked when I would write it, why hadn’t I written it already? I’ve been encouraged to write it by so many people I just gave in really.

When Emily Owen was 16 she underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour.

Three days later, as she turned 17, she was fighting for her life in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“No one wants to go through what I went through nor live with the condition that I have, but my ordeal made me look at life in many different ways and indeed experience extraordinary things.

On voyages of discovery like this you should encounter incredible things, and, for me, many of those things were about my inner self.

Despite the losses many things were still very much intact.”

She was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and as a result of the condition and surgery over the years, she lost her hearing, her balance has been impaired, and she has damage to her facial nerve.

A gifted musician and sports’ lover, Emily didn’t feel like Emily any more.

Emily’s struggle coming to terms with her life changing condition and the surgery she required, is recounted in the book; but so too are the good times, her incredible sense of humour, her willingness to take up a challenge and her optimism for the future, and the amazing support network of family and friends around her.

Eventually, painfully, Emily began to let go of what had been and come to terms with the realities of her changed life.

Despite the illness, trauma, pain, hardships and setbacks, Emily discovered she was still Emily and her inspirational story is recounted in her latest book, Still Emily Seeing Rainbows in the Silence.

This is her fourth book but the first to recount the last 20 years and her struggle to come to terms with how dramatically her life was changed by illness.

Thurcaston And Cropston Open Gardens 2016 - 10th Anniversary

Shepshed’s Slimmers Lose lbs And Raise £s For Charity!

Caring members of the Shepshed Slimming World group have collected 50 bags of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Christina, a weight loss Consultant who runs the Shepshed Slimming World group, encouraged members, their friends and families in Shepshed to springclean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they’ve successfully slimmed out of to generate valuable stock for the Loughborough Cancer Research UK shop.

The 10th Open Gardens event in the villages of Thurcaston and Cropston will take place this summer on the weekend of 25th and 26th June.

We hope to have a number of different gardens for you to visit across the two villages, some who have taken part in the event for most of those 10 years! Some are large, some small, some immaculate, some very much less so! But all for you to enjoy.

It is often said how welcoming our Gardeners are and they would love you to come and see all their hard work and help them raise money for a great cause.

Gardens will be open from 2pm – 6pm on both days; tickets will be £4 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days. They can be purchased on the day from any of the Open Gardens. Look for the fuchsia coloured balloons!

All money raised from the event will go to LOROS and the villages’ new Good Neighbour Scheme.

The group, which meets every Wednesday at The Christchurch Methodist Church and have lost a stunning 3335.5 lbs totalling 238 st since January this year, were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the ‘Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. Last year Slimming World’s Big Clothes Throw raised £1.7m for Cancer Research UK, and this year the organisation aims to raise £2m for the charity.

With each bag worth up to £25, Christina hopes the contribution from the Shepshed group will help to reach that total. She says: "The incredible members of my group have amazed me with their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again! This year’s Big Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and I can’t believe just how many bags my members, their friends and families have managed to collect for Cancer Research UK. It’s been so rewarding and I’m so proud to help pull together such a phenomenal amount of stock for such a worthwhile cause!

"Knowing they’ll never need their ‘before’ clothes again, when I told my group about the campaign they couldn’t wait to take part.

Christchurch Methodist Church Christchurch Methodist Church celebrated the rededication of its premises in exuberant style on 21st/22nd May. An ambitious project has been undertaken to make the whole building fully accessible and more attractive for use by community groups. it is also vital we spread the message that keeping a healthy weight could reduce the risk of developing ten different types of cancer. This is why Slimming World chose Cancer Research UK as our national charity partner. We really hope our bag collection will help to increase understanding of how weight affects cancer risk.”

Many people called in on the Saturday to admire the new worship area, enjoy refreshments and view a firstfloor exhibition illustrating the life of the church and the diverse activities of user groups.

The open day also featured live performances by the church choirs, the Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Act One youth theatre group and the Chera Voce choir.

Sunday morning worship included the christening of Asta Tauriel Woods. Present among the packed evening congregation were the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, the Mayor & Mayoress of Charnwood, and Claire Poole the Chair of Shepshed Town Council.

The service began with a fanfare by the 1st Loughborough Boys & Girls Brigades followed by an inspirational address from Rev Dr the Lord Leslie Griffiths while choir and organ music was supplemented by the worship band. A presentation was made to Eunice Butters marking her 25 years of service as a local preacher.

Shepshed Open Gardens 20th Anniversary Event

My members said "It felt really liberating to donate all their old clothes. They actually enjoyed bagging them up and saying goodbye – it felt like we were saying bye to the old us!”

Shepshed will yet again be opening their gardens to raise funds for Shepshed Volunteer Centre and Shepshed Special Community Bus on Saturday and Sunday 2nd and 3rd July 2016.

The Cancer Research UK shop in Loughborough, says: "We’re really grateful to all the Shepshed Slimming World members who cleared out their cupboards and generously donated their unwanted items to Cancer Research UK shops. All funds raised will go towards the charity’s research to beat over 200 types of cancer, helping to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured."

Gardens will be open from 1-6 each day, and we are still looking for a few more gardens to open on the day. Perhaps you’ve been working on your garden, it looks lovely and you might like to raise some money for two worthy Shepshed organisations by allowing the public to have a walk around. We have several new gardens this year, and as it’s our 20th Anniversary, we would like to make it an extra special event.

Summer Colour We’ve had some lovely sunny days recently to give a taste of what summer will bring, enough to warm the earth and lift the spirits. With the weather improving our attention increasingly turns to the garden.

It’s easy to add a splash of seasonal colour with a visit to the local garden centre or nursery in June & July, but what to choose?

Verbena

Dahlias

Plants for Containers

Pelargonium – AKA Upright geraniums, these come in a huge range of colours from vibrant reds and pinks to soft lilac and white.

They are great in pots, coping in hot spots and infrequent watering. Scented Pelargoniums are a favourite of mine. They have less prominent flowers but the heavily scented foliage, often patterned or textured they make an interesting display.

Verbena – these come in a range of habits, either trailing, bushy or a combination of the two. They all flower prolifically, benefiting from occasional dead heading. Again there is a vast range to choose from including some pretty bicoloured forms.

Million Bells – These are my favourite plants for containers and hanging baskets. They flower from May right through to October without the need to deadhead.

there are so many of them that they create great mounds of colour.

New Guinea Impatiens – The large flowered and leaved cousins of Buzy Lizzies, these provide a dramatic splash of colour throughout the summer. They are really tender so be sure to plant them out once all chance of frost has past.

Begonias – the popular Non-Stop and Illumination forms flower constantly through the summer months without the need for constant attention.

Gap fillers for borders

Fuchsias – choose bush forms rather than the trailing ones and these will fit neatly into empty gaps in the border. There are small dainty blooms right through to the huge American hybrids with deeply ruffled blooms. Fuchsias do benefit from deadheading to remove spent flowers and their purple fruits in order to prolong the flowering.

Fuchsias are particularly good in shady areas and are equally as happy in well watered containers as they are in the ground.

Osteospermum – the Cape Daisy, these neat plants are smothered in large daisies in a whole range of colours from spring to late summer.

Deadheading is worthwhile to ensure they remain floriferous.

Some varieties are hardy like

Osteospermum Compactum or O. ‘Tresco Purple’. These varieties reliably make it through each winter, whereas most will succumb to the frosts.

Dahlias – Garden centres and nurseries stock dwarf varieties of Dahlias at this time of year with are particularly good for popping in to gaps in the border as well as pots.

Great clusters of petals in a rainbow of colours are held on sturdy stems above green or purple foliage.

Deadheading is essential as is fending off greedy slugs.

Rudbeckia – hardy varieties are commonly found in borders, but there are many half-hardy varieties offered in garden centres and nurseries in early summer to give brilliantly bright blooms non-stop until late autumn. New varieties have large blooms with interesting blotched petals.

Deadhead to prolong their season of interest.

Pelargoniums, Dahlias, Fuchsias and Million Bells will be featuring heavily in my garden this year.

Double Bill For Music Lovers

Loughborough Orchestra will be sharing the stage with the Newtown Linford Choral Society again at their Summer Concert after a successful collaboration in 2014.

I was honoured to be one of the keynote speakers at the annual Rainbows lunch held at the Leicester Tigers ground recently.

Rainbows Children’s Hospice is an amazing organisation and it is an honour to have them based in Loughborough and a privilege to support their work.

This year the Mozart Requiem Mass in D minor will be performed in the second half of the concert. This is the last piece of music written

by Mozart and has something of a mysterious element.

An unknown person commissioned the Requiem but Mozart died before it was finished. There is no record of what Mozart had completed, or which pieces he had sketched out.

It was important for Constanze, Mozart’s widow, to have the work completed so that she could claim payment. She first asked Joseph von Eybler but when he felt unable to complete it, she passed it on to Franz Xaver Sϋssmeyer.

Whatever the origins, this is one of the most frequently performed pieces of choral music in the repertoire.

The first half of the programme has some rousing and tuneful melodies with very different background scenarios!

William Walton wrote various film scores and many of these became popular in their own right. The Spitfire Prelude and Fugue was adapted from the score for “The First of the Few” – a biopic featuring the designer of the Spitfire. The music immediately became part of popular orchestral repertoire and has remained so ever since.

Smetana was intent on engendering nationalist feelings in his music – and none more so than his tone poem “Má vlast”.

This piece of music depicts various scenes from life in Bohemia (now Czech Republic), the most

popular of which is that depicting the river which runs through the country – the Vlatava (also known as the Moldau in German). The music starts as the river is a small stream, becoming wider, flowing through a wood where a hunt is in progress. Next is a country wedding, moonlight and nymphs, St John’s rapids, through Prague and finally flowing on towards the Elbe. The well known tune which runs throughout the piece is based on a Czech folk tune.

Although Brahms lived at much the same time as Smetana, the background for the Academic Festival Overture is very different!

Brahms was already an acclaimed composer when he was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from the University of Breslau. He was given a nudge that a piece of music in honour of the university would be an appropriate means to show his thanks.

Two years later, he completed the Academic Festival Overture, which he described as a “rollicking potpourri of student songs” and probably not what the University expected at all!

The concert will be performed on Saturday June 18th at 7.30pm.

Many Leicestershire MPs took part in a House of Commons debate on funding for brain tumour research recently. Almost 1000 constituents signed a petition to have the topic debated in Parliament and I am grateful to Ed Argar MP for mentioning two local families in his speech.

Earlier this month HM The Queen announced the Government’s forthcoming legislative programme. Under the themes of economic security, national security and opportunity for all I am pleased to say that the Department for Education has two important bills – on Children and Social Work and on Education for All. There is also a National Citizen’s Service Bill which will see the expansion of the Government’s hugely successful National Citizen Service so more young people can mix with people of other backgrounds, and learn what it means to serve their community.

I was delighted last summer to visit one of our local NCS groups to mark their work on redecorating the Hind Leys College Community Room. There will be more NCS groups taking place this summer for young people aged 15-17 and I’d encourage anyone eligible to take part. And, if you are a local group who could benefit from support via the social action element of NCS then do get in touch with me. More details can be found here: www.leics-ebc. org.uk/national_citizen_service At the end of April I chaired a meeting attended by residents, councillors, GLW Feeds and the Environment Agency to discuss the ongoing concerns about noise and smell in the area near the GLW site. A separate article on the meeting is included in this edition of Community Eye and I’d encourage readers to follow the reporting advice.

Finally, thank you to everyone at Christchurch Methodist church who made visitors feel so welcome at their re-dedication service recently. It was a great pleasure to join them all and to see the new facilities which I am sure will be used well by folk in the town.

Local Meeting With GLW Feeds And Environment Agency On Friday 29th April, as Nicky Morgan mentioned in her last Shepshed Eye column, a meeting took place between local councillors, GLW Feeds, the Environment Agency and local residents to discuss the bad smell, black smoke and continuous humming sound associated with the factory.

GLW Feeds stated that they were unaware of the origin of a smell.

They will, however, be changing one of their exhausts later this year so that it is no longer positioned directly towards local residences. They will also place jet caps on them.

At the meeting, it was speculated that the problem could be coming from one of the feed products and so it was suggested that local residents should log times and dates of when the smell occurs and notify GLW Feeds on 01509 501869 to aid their investigations.

Alternatively, reports can be made to the Environment Agency on their incident hotline number: 0800 807060.

Residents should also inform

GLW Feeds if they see black smoke coming from the chimney.

The company changed their boiler to a gas one a few years ago meaning that only water vapour should be being produced now. The factory would like to know if that is not the case.

Whilst GLW Feeds are not the only source of noise in the area, the Environment Agency and Charnwood Borough Council have previously undertaken noise monitoring in response to residents’ concerns. There have been no operational changes on site that would affect noise levels from the GLW factory since this monitoring took place. In response to the meeting, the Environment Agency agreed to send their noise expert to visit a local resident’s home to assess how to monitor the problem properly.

GLW Feeds have agreed to work with residents and local councillors to set up a liaison committee to increase communication. Further details about this will be provided when it has been created.

CHRISTINE RADFORD As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc.

GLW Feed

Following concerns about the odour and noise emanating from GLW feed over a number of years to myself, Nicky Morgan MP, Cllr Tassell, Cllr Bebbington and Cllr Claire Poole a meeting was arranged with all parties on Friday 29th April in the Glenmore Centre, members of public were also invited and were able to raise their concerns with both GLW Feed and the Environment Agency.

Following this meeting it was agreed that CBC would site a noise monitor on the GLW Feed site, and the report which has come back is that the noise levels comply with the conditions as set out on the planning permission ref P/83/0699/2. The mill ceased production on Saturday 30th April at approx. 17.30 hrs. Therefore CBC were able to obtain noise data both with and without the mill in operation.

It was also suggested at the meeting that a Liaison Committee and a direct line into GLW Feed be set up, but to date this has not happened. In the meantime please contact the Environment Agency on 0800 807060 to report any current noise or odour incidents or e mail them on DNLenquiries@ environment-agency.gov.uk.

Election of Chairman of the County Council

At the Meeting of the County Council on 18th May, Mr Bill Liquorish was elected Chairman for the period until the next Annual Meeting of the Council.

Mrs. Janice Richards was appointed Vice-Chairman.

Annual Meeting of Shepshed Town Council

At the recent Annual Meeting of Shepshed Town Council which was held on 18th May at 7,30pm I gave my annual report outlining what I had been doing over the previous year as County Councillor for Shepshed.

Leicestershire County Council’s Green Plaque Awards Awards are nominated by residents each year, with a shortlist of 12 drawn up so that residents can vote for their preferred six plaques. Voting is currently open till 6th June. This year’s names are varied and range from Women’s Rights campaigner, Lady Florence Dixie, to toy manufacturer, Palitoy.

Charnwood has three nominees; Charles Bennion, benefactor of Bradgate Park; William Cotton, Sileby born and Loughborough based, the inventor of the Cottons Patent Knitting Machine; and William Wilberforce, born in Wanlip, anti-slavery campaigner who died only days after his momentous Act was finally approved by Parliament.

The detailed planning application has now been lodged with CBC for the 270 dwellings on land off Hathern Road, between M1 Motorway and the Countrymans Way Estate by Persimmon Homes reference P/16/0686/2 Even though outline planning permission has already been given, your Borough Councillors have raised concerns of the close proximity to the M1 (noise) and the area of land which is prone to flooding.

Jubilee Walk

Over fifteen years ago Cllr Radford managed to get refurbished seats on Jubilee Walk, but they are now in a state of decay. Your Ward Councillors Radford and Tassell are working with CBC to replace them; in fact Cllr Tassell has enrolled the Cabinet Lead member for open spaces to see what she can do.

Jubilee Walk which is owned by the De Lisle Estate but is maintained by Charnwood is a well-used footpath.

Annual Meeting of Shepshed Town Council

All four of your Borough Councillors submitted their Annual reports to the Annual Meeting held on 18th May, setting out what they had been doing over the previous twelve months.

All four Shepshed Borough Councillors have been sitting on this panel following concerns raised by all of us regarding improvements being carried out in Council houses. Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners

Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park.

The Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers are planning a display highlighting the work carried out by the Y-Listeners at Beaumanor Hall during World War II. The display is planned for February/March 2017 in the Public Library in Granby Street, Loughborough.

Beaumanor Hall was requisitioned by the War Office in 1940 and set up as a "Y" Station. The "Y" (wireless) Stations were British Signals Intelligence collection sites established during World War II. The Y-Listeners collected traffic (signals) that was then passed on for processing, to the

Secrecy was once of the utmost importance but nowadays the true history of the important role of the Listeners and the code breakers is coming to light. It has been calculated that their work shortened the War by some two years. We are interested in hearing of personal experiences, anecdotes and memories that anyone associated with the Y-Listening Service would be willing to share. Be assured that this project has the full approval of the representatives of Beaumanor Hall.
