The event incorporated traditional fairy stories given an unusual twist and were read with the help of some fabulous puppets. The children then went on to decorate some beautiful themed masks and took part in a treasure hunt to find characters around the children's library. The event was a great success.

The book signing was a new venture for The Nottingham but one that fits perfectly with the society’s ethos of being right at the heart of the community.

Customer Adviser Ria Cook said: “The book signing came about after Kevin, who is a customer, mentioned the idea.

At first we were a bit taken aback as we are a building society and it’s not what we’d normally do but the more we thought about it the more it seemed like a good idea.

It was a chance to showcase the great products and services The Nottingham has to offer and the fantastic work of a popular local author.”

Kevin J. Adcock added: “It was great that following a conversation with the Shepshed team when I was in branch we were able to arrange this session and it was fantastic to spend time with people there and introduce them to Sir Maxwell.”

Award Winning Creative Play Sessions Launch In Loughborough And Surrounding Villages

Shepshed WI Shepshed WI met for their June meeting when the speaker for the evening was Lynne TannWatson bringing a talk entitled ‘The Witch’s Garden’. Her talk was all about herbs and their history.

Herbs were introduced to Britain by the Roman army and many of the plants and herbs we see round today were brought by them.

Innovative and award winning arts and crafts creative classes, parties, afterschool clubs and events is being brought back to Loughborough. The Creation Station’s hands-on art and craft exploration sessions give even very young children the chance to safely experiment with a wide range of materials, tools and ideas.

Witches grew herbs and collected them from the countryside, hence the name of the talk. She talked about knot gardens and the uses made of the strongly scented plants grown in them. For uses today Lynne said that the best time to collect herbs was mid to late afternoon and one of her tips was that lemon balm, garlic and lavender added to a joint of meat was really good. Lynne gives talks, runs workshops and has a business selling herbs from her cottage in Donisthorpe.

“I am really excited about bringing back the Creation Station to Loughborough, Shepshed and surrounding villages. Our aim is to inspire children’s imaginations through our specially designed art and craft activities and products” smiles Jude Coles, local mum to two “As well as being terrific fun for both child and adult the sessions encourage positive parenting skills through practical creative play”.

A coffee morning was held at the home of Chis Thomas and all the proceeds went to the Shepshed Volunteer Centre.

This was held in memory past President Glenis Brookes who sadly passed away recently.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday 7th July when the speaker will be Deborah Spencer talking about being a Stilton cheese maker. Meetings are held at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed at 7.30 and visitors are very welcome.

Christian Aid Nearly £2,000 inclusive of Gift Aid has recently been raised for Christian Aid by five collaborating churches in Shepshed and Oaks in Charnwood. A combination of collections, donations and a market cake stall contributed to this excellent total during Christian Aid Week in May. The organising group wishes to thank everyone whose efforts and generosity will help to bring relief to people in desperate need.

Are held on the second Saturday of each month at Shepshed Town Council offices in Charnwood Road from 11am until 12 noon.

Labour Councillors would love to meet you and help you deal with any issues that you may have. All Shepshed residents are welcome.

Shepshed Inner Wheel Club President Carole presented Angie Whitmore of Shepshed Volunteer Centre with a cheque for £417.50, they have also purchased a bench for the garden at the centre, and organised a raffle at Christmas, as part of their fund raising for the year. The new garden at the centre was chosen by Carole as her charity of the year. Volunteers have transformed the rear of the

Volunteer Centre, into a lovely quiet and peaceful garden, for local groups to use. The fund raising has involved a Murder mystery evening, a champagne Grand National Breakfast, a Sunday Lunch, Christmas parcels and coffee mornings. Members can be seen siting on the bench in the garden, and Carole presenting the cheque to Angie. Members enjoyed an evening in the garden whilst drinking pimms and eating pate and bread, after the cheque was presented.

Founder of The Creation Station Sarah Cressall said “Having ran our first franchise in Loughborough back in 2005 to 2009, I’m delighted that Jude is now providing the fun activities for children from new born to adults. As a creative person, Jude has a wonderful warmth and creative energy about her that I know will inspire children and families to have fun and enjoy being creative together”.

Classes run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings in Shepshed, Hathern and Loughborough respectively.

News From Forest House Surgery Flu Vaccination Clinics will start on the 19th September at Forest House Surgery. Patients are urged to make an appointment for their free Flu Vaccination if they are 65 or over, or under 65 and suffer from any of the following conditions: • Chest problems including certain asthmatics on steroid inhalers or steroid tablets , those with chronic bronchitis or emphysema • Heart Disease • Diabetes • Kidney Disease • Liver Disease • History of stroke or TIA • A weakened immune system • Problems with your spleen or if you’ve had your spleen removed • A neurological condition e.g Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Cerebral Palsy • Or if you are pregnant

Due to unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances, Shepshed Town Council would like to apologise that Glenmore Park and the Cemetery are not up their usual standard of appearance. This is due to a combination of illness, holiday and the weather.

However, plans are now in place to rectify the matter as soon as is practical.

Shepshed Running Club Shepshed Running Club used their summer Fun Run and barbecue to raise money for Leicestershire Air Ambulance. Local Loughborough and district clubs were invited to come along and enjoy the scenic Garendon Park course. Over 100 runners took part and after finishing all met up at a nearby pub for a " burger and a drink" Club Chairman Richard Bibb said "The evening was a great success with over £100 raised."

EU Referendum Result For Charnwood The local total in the EU Referendum for Charnwood is as follows: Remain - 43,500; Leave - 50,672. The turnout was 70.46%

EU Referendum Result For Shepshed Shepshed had a turnout of 62% who voted at the recent election.

39% of those voted to Remain and 61% voted to Leave.

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB NEWS Annual Christmas Market Confirmed Preparations are underway again for the Shepshed Lions Club 2nd Annual Christmas Market.

This year’s event will take place in The Hallcroft, Shepshed on Sunday 11th December 2016. The event follows last year’s popular and successful event. There will be Santa’s grotto, Festive stalls, street entertainment and other attractions. We Are Looking For New Members Shepshed Lions Club is looking for new members to join their already successful club. Do you have a desire to help those less fortunate than yourself? Lions Club Present Cheque To Domont Lions Club, France Shepshed LionsClub President Bob Lilley has presented a cheque for 1259.36 euros to Lion Pascal Guy of Domont Lions Club, France. The money was raised following an appeal to Lions Clubs in District 105e for funds to continue a project in Madagascar.

The founder of this project was tragically murdered in the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015. The project supports a large number of disadvantaged children by providing a school,

dispensary, fresh water and other support. Lion President Bob Lilley said, "We are overwhelmed by the support we received in this appeal.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the funds."

Shepshed Lions Club Has A New President At the end of the Lion Year, which is every June, a new President has taken over at Shepshed Lions Club. The new Lion President who has taken the reins at the Club is Ann Bodycote. She takes over from Bob Lilley who has been President for the last two years.

Ann will bring new ideas to the role and take a very successful

club forward in the next year.

The change took place at a social event on Monday 13th June at The Crown Hotel Shepshed.

Community First Responders Since Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders started on 2nd December 2013 they have attended numerous incidents. Here are some statistics about the team. I think you may be surprised how much work in our community that the First Responders undertake.

In 2014 the team completed 2241.75 hours of voluntary service and attended 461 different incidents.

In 2015 the team completed 2954.5 hours of voluntary service and attended 974 different incidents.

So far (up to 31.05.2016) the team has completed 1180 hours of voluntary service and attended 385 different incidents.

Lions Support for Shepshed Student Teacher Alice Brailsford from Shepshed is studying in Nottingham to be a teacher, but in August she is leaving that behind to spend 4 weeks of her summer break in Tanzania, working in a baby home run by 'Forever Angels'.

The charity helps orphaned, abandoned, sick and poverty stricken children in the most challenging circumstances.

Lion President Bob Lilley said, 'Shepshed Lions give the great

majority of the money we raise to local charities, but we also remember that we are part of the largest service organisation in the world. In Alice's case, we are able to support a local person and an international charity at the same time, so this donation is a double winner for us. In deciding to give her £200 to support what she will be doing with Forever Angels, the Club were particularly impressed with Alice's own fundraising efforts.

We are sure her experiences in Tanzania will be of great benefit to the children out there, and also to the children she works with in her future career. We wish her and Forever Angels every success.'

Health Boost For Shepshed Incoming Shepshed Lions President Ann Bodycote has commenced her year of office by making a presentation of £500 to Dr Parveen Ghatora, of Field Street Surgery, Shepshed. The money will go towards the cost of a new ECG machine.

Dr Ghatora said, 'We are very grateful to Shepshed Lions for this

donation, which will go towards improving health care locally. It means our patients can can have more of their treatment in the town, rather than having to travel elsewhere, and will be able to get their results quicker.'

Lion President Ann said, 'All the money we raise comes from the people of Shepshed, and it is they who will benefit from this donation. We want to help Dr Ghatora and all the staff at Field Street Surgery provide the very best health services.'

GARDENS TO VISIT

Calke Abbey

Well June was a month of chaotic weather and rapid growth in the garden! July is the month when I get to sit back and enjoy my own garden at it’s best, full of blooms, lush foliage and abundant fruit.

I also take a break from my busy Garden Design and Consultation business but I always seem to manage to arrange my holidays around gardens – a bus man’s holiday!

Some of my favourites are close by and some further afield but all are worth visiting for inspiration and the opportunity of enjoying the fruits of someone else’s labour.

On The Doorstep

Coton Manor

Calke Abbey is one of my top three favourite gardens. Being only a 10 minute drive from my home I can pop over to top up on garden history and my passion for walled gardens, it’s such a shame I rarely get the time though.

The gardeners at Calke Abbey manage a huge walled garden, physic garden, orangery orchards and more, all full of colour and edible abundance. I admire their neat rows of vegetables and wigwams of fragrant sweet peas.

Whatton House is another garden only a few minutes’ drive away from my home, off the A6 between Loughborough and Kegworth. Lady Crawshaw and

her gardener maintain some beautiful herbaceous borders, the oriental garden, rose gardens and orchards along with acres of specimen trees and woodland.

There are plant sales too.

Coton Manor Gardens take a while longer to journey too, but a gentle drive through the rolling Northamptonshire countryside is no hardship. The garden is owned by the Pasley-Tyler family who have developed a beautiful garden divided into areas of formal borders, ponds, kitchen garden, woodland and meadow.

They even have Flamingos wondering around on the lower lawns! The plant nursery sells plants grown onsite and they have some lovely unusual plants to tempt the enthusiast.

Further Afield

Trentham Gardens near Stoke on Trent has lots to look at if you are a keen gardener, fun for the kids and some lovely walks too. There is a huge garden centre nearby which is worth visiting too. Well known garden designers have developed the Italianate gardens, grass borders and there is a new woodland garden being planted up this year.

The ‘new wave’ plantings are spectacular throughout summer and into the autumn showing how the right combination of colour, texture and form can create a long lasting and dynamic garden.

Helmsley Walled Garden in North Yorkshire was a truly wonderful discovery last summer and my current favorite. The old walled garden adjacent to Helmsley Castle has been renovated to provide acres of perennial and rose borders, wildflower meadow, productive fruit , vegetable and cut flower areas. The stunning double borders backed with purple beech took my breath away with their bold colour combinations.

I do hope you get a chance to visit some of these gardens this year for some inspiration. Next month I’ll be suggesting some tasty ways to make use of the fruit, veg and herbs abundant in the garden at this time of year.

Shepshed Labour Group Town Council Update Claire Poole: It’s been a busy year on the Town Council and it has been a privilege to serve our local community and our local residents as Shepshed Town Council Chairperson, and after being re-elected for the year 2016-2017 you have my assurance that I will continue to serve our local community and local residents and to promote Shepshed at every opportunity.

I was privileged to be invited to open the Shepshed Volunteer Centre Wellbeing Garden in May. It was a lovely day and a great turn out from local people. Also in May, I attended the Shepshed District Twinning Association event at Shepshed Glenmore Centre where it was nice to meet local Shepshed residents from the Twinning Association and representatives from Domont.

Also in May I attended Shepshed Christ Church for the Rededication of the New Building service.

Jane Lennie: I enjoyed last year serving Shepshed as the Vice Chairperson and will continue to do so after being re-elected for the year 2016-2017. I was pleased to deliver the Council's cheque of £6,000.00 in support of one of our most valued services – the Shepshed Volunteer Centre.

They are so helpful and busy.

Like Citizens Advice Bureau, new volunteers are appreciated and, if you have an hour or two to spare in the week, you could enjoy helping people, meeting experienced volunteers and learning new skills.

Robert Ewing: I have been working hard as the Chairperson of the finance committee on Shepshed Town Council and we have continued to improve the provision of local play equipment. As your town council we have continued our support of the Shepshed Volunteer Centre, and the Citizens Advice Bureau. Both are very well used by local residents. The grants

subcommittee is in the process of considering a policy of how small grants are allocated to local groups in Shepshed.

Myriam Roberts and Glenys Timpson: Since we last reported quite a lot has happened. There have been flooding issues with one of the football pitches at the Little Haw Lane playing fields.

This has been investigated and it appears that there is a drainage problem, we will update you when we have further information. At Glenmore Park there is an area that is constantly wet and boggy and so it has been suggested that a 'bog' garden is created in order to improve that area.

Your Shepshed Labour Town Councillors Group have been following a vigorous program of ongoing repair works for Shepshed’s parks. Cambridge Street Park has had its swing set repainted red and Sandringham Rise have new play equipment to improve the park. The park at Butt Hole Lane got a train, a spinner, a 4 child rocker and a basketball hoop. Glenmore Park had its park equipment safety matting repaired.

The nature reserve is coming along nicely now and it was decided to replace the pond with a wetland area because of the constant vandalism. Suitable plants have been put in and it should create some nice reed beds for the wildlife which is beginning to inhabit the area.

Raymond Draycott: The Shepshed Labour group wanted to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in style so I suggested that we named the re-vamped Shepshed nature reserve Queen Elizabeth II nature reserve in honour of our monarch’s 90th birthday celebrations as a lasting memory – subject to the appropriate permissions of course.

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I’d like to say thank you to all the residents who got in touch after the senseless murder of Batley and Spen MP, Jo Cox or who tweeted using “#thankyourmp” This was a truly shocking event and I think we can all feel enormous sympathy for Jo’s family, colleagues in the Labour Party and her husband and children.

It is important that MPs are accessible to their constituents.

Doing our surgeries in the community, which is what Jo was doing when she was killed, is a key part of our job. I value every contact I have with Shepshed residents and others across my constituency and I shall continue to attend events and hold surgeries but we won’t forget Jo. It is always a huge privilege to attend the annual TwentyTwenty celebration evening.

TwentyTwenty do a fantastic job supporting young people who have dropped out of education or are at risk of dropping out. Every year we hear inspirational stories by those who participate in their schemes such as Love for Life and those who are involved in the mentoring. Everyone involved is changing lives and helping participants to find their way in life.

There have been lots of events to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. It was a privilege to attend the official thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral as well as attending a number of local parties. It was great to get all the red, white and blue bunting out again!

Just before Christmas 2015, I was informed that the Number 4 bus service was to be withdrawn in Shepshed. There was an immediate outcry from many parts of Shepshed, with residents feeling that this action would isolate them from much needed access to Loughborough’s shopping and medical services, as well as to employment opportunities and schools.

Arriva kindly offered to divert their service along Trueway Drive to help offer a service to residents. Unfortunately, this has not proved viable and there have been some issues in travelling along this route, especially outside the school at the start and end of the school day. Arriva decided that they will revert their service back along Leicester Rd from 20 June 2016. This will provide a service which is nearby to Trueway Drive and so I hope will be of assistance to those bus passengers who live in the area.

I would like to thank Arriva for their help in trying to provide a service to bus users in the area.

Finally it was good to visit the Shepshed Food Bank recently and meet Glennis and other volunteers. I have been a regular visitor to Joseph’s Storehouse in Loughborough and I’d like to pay tribute to Glenis and everyone involved in the foodbank in Shepshed for everything they do and say thank you to everyone who supports them.

CHRISTINE RADFORD As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council.

Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc.

Bradgate Park

I am one of the County Trustees who sit on the management Committee for Bradgate Park and at the recent Trustees meeting the consultation on new Public Spaces Protection Orders was discussed.

It was reported that we had lost 30 calves so far this year due to dogs chasing them; the birth rate was down by 2/3 and there had been an increase in dogs on person’s incidents. Due to these incidents is the reason why the Trustees are updating the byelaws with a new Public Spaces Protection Order. That is why the Trustees are incorporating within these Protection Orders of having dogs on leads.

The new visitors centre is due to be open to the public at the beginning of July and will be opened officially in September by Sir Richard Attenborough.

No 16 Bus

Following concerns and feedback brought to my attention from residents who live on Trueway Drive/Fairway Road regarding the double decker buses using these roads following their decision earlier in the year to divert the No 16 bus from Leicester Road. These concerns were relayed to Arriva by myself and residents. Arriva have now taken the decision to withdraw the two stops on Trueway Drive/Fairway Road.

Arriva initially made the decision following the withdrawal of the Shepshed Sprinter which was run by another operator.

CHRISTINE RADFORD Your Borough Councillors can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour and planning issues.

Planning

A revised layout plan has now been lodged for the development to the rear of 62 Iveshead Road application P/16/1353/2. This area of land already has outline planning approval; I hope that the revised application takes into account the problems with flooding in Iveshead Road which occurs every time we have heavy rain. Your Borough Councillors have asked for a meeting with the new developers to discuss our concerns.

As ward Councillors we often get letters from residents objecting to planning applications, sometimes against significant applications from house builders, but more often relating to an extension planned by a neighbour. But what we do ask, is, that you speak to your neighbours if you are considering an extension and what you are trying to achieve, you are much more likely to get their support and understanding.

Flooding

Your Borough Councillors have written to Charnwood regarding the problems experienced locally following the heavy rain. Flooding has increased in areas where new developments have recently started and this will only get worse.

Councillor Radford has been in touch with Severn Trent, asking for a meeting, but at the time of going to print has not received a reply.

Jubilee Walk

Councillor Radford and Tassell walked Jubilee Walk with Officers from CBC and they have now got an agreement with CBC that a further 2 refurnished seats will be put down Jubilee Walk for the enjoyment of walkers.

Anti-Social behaviour

Anti-social behaviour is to fore just lately, with residents causing problems to their neighbours.

We have been working with officers in CBC to sort out these issues. In some cases it might mean the tenants who are causing problems moved.

Do not delay in contacting us if you have issues such as anti-social behaviour whether or not you live in private accommodation or local authority housing.
