Shepshed Cycling Club The Shepshed Cycling Club was set up just over a year ago. The current membership is 42. The club’s aim is to promote a healthy lifestyle through cycling and exercise.

We are affiliated with British Cycling and have had funding support in the form of grants from Shepshed Town Council and Charnwood Borough Council. Our kit is sponsored by The Black Swan in Shepshed where we also have a monthly club meeting on the first Wednesday of every month.

Shepshed Probus Club The President welcomed members of the Shepshed Probus Club to the December meeting with a warm welcome to our guests and our entertainer Joy Henderson. A special welcome was given to wives of members – the first time this has happened at a monthly meeting in the club’s history. After the apologies for absence were given the Secretary went through the usual routine club business and after issue of the club magazine went on to announce another “first”in the club’s history. Three members are to celebrate 65th wedding anniversaries in December and were congratulated and roundly applauded by all present.

The meal today was a festive lunch enjoyed by all being a Christmas lunch with all the trimmings efficiently served in a decorated environment much appreciated by the members and guests.

After the usual raffle we were given a performance by Joy Henderson – a “magician with a difference”. This proved to be a well executed show which included audience participation including the classic “sword through the neck” trick. Joy was thanked by the President for an entertaining show.

The next meeting is on January 9th 2017 with a talk by Mike Gillingham entitled “PLUTO – Pipeline Under The Ocean”.

Shepshed Community Nativity

Residents of Loughborough are invited to join the Charnwood Marie Curie Fundraising group, to help raise vital funds for their athome nursing service for people with a terminal illness.

The Charnwood Fundraising Group run events throughout the year, including a fashion show and a tea party, and are looking for a Chair to help organise and lead the meetings as well as other members to help support.

Steeple bells, hand bells, an instrumental ensemble, dancing angels, the Chera Voce choir, St Botolph’s Primary School choir and an audience sing-along were all packed into an hour of entertainment which included a play written especially for the occasion. The Christmas Story by Robin Popley begins with Amber’s letter to Santa asking for a gift for the whole world.

The request has Santa scratching his head in bewilderment, but

assisted by his faithful elf and a talking snowman he sets out on a frequently hilarious journey of discovery. After an encounter with the law, a group of shepherds cross their path in the wake of a procession of angels. Later guided by their Sat Nav they compare notes with three Wise Men following a bright star. Finally they all arrive at the Bethlehem stable and realise they have found the answer to Amber’s letter.

The organisers would like to thank everyone who helped in any way to make the evening so enjoyable.

A raffle plus donations at the door raised £500 for the Shepshed Food Bank.

Members were wished a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year by the President and the meeting closed. New members are welcome. Contact the Secretary on 01509 769802.

The members of Shepshed WI had an eventful 2016 and in November elected a new President and Committee.

The subject of the first meeting is entitled ‘The Art Works of Mr Ball’.

All money raised by the Charnwood Fundraising Group will help Marie Curie provide expert care, guidance and support to help people with a terminal illness, and their families, get the most from the time they have left.

Locally, Marie Curie Nurses work night and day, in people’s homes across Leicestershire providing hands-on care and vital emotional support. Marie Curie also supports people throughout their illness by giving practical information from our free helpline and is also the leader in research into better ways of caring for people with terminal illness.

Seven out of 10 carers say that people with a terminal illness do not get all the care and support they need. As the UK’s leading charity for people living with any terminal illness, and their families, Marie Curie doesn’t think that is good enough.

Sophie Wallace, the local Community Fundraiser for Leicestershire said ‘Given the choice, most people would want to die at home, surrounded by the people and things that they cherish. Marie Curie makes this possible, but we couldn’t do it without our fundraising groups.’

‘Fundraising groups are a great chance to make a difference while having fun – our volunteers have been involved in a range of events, from tea parties, to collections, to fashion shows!’

Shepshed Town Council is often approached by residents when issues and problems arise in and around Shepshed, for example pot holes in the roads, dog fouling in the streets, acts of vandalism etc. Generally, we are either able to deal with these directly, if the issues is under our jurisdiction, or to assist in resolving the issue by liaising with the appropriate local authority or utility, when we have no powers to deal with the issue ourselves.

Nine years since his last "world tour" of Shepshed the self proclaimed international megastar returns to his home town in January for 8 dates starting Thursday 12th at The Pied Bull and ending Saturday 21st at Shepshed Dynamo clubhouse.

For the unitiated Ray Vonn is the alter ego of Mark Haywood a musician/entertainer of 35 years.

Ray spent the early part of his career as a drummer (he still plays drums) where he worked with many professional acts before going it alone about 10 years ago as a singer/guitarist and adopting the Ray Vonn name due to his uncanny resemblance to the DJ Ray Von in Peter Kays Phoenix Nights.

So where has Ray been for the last 9 years? and what can audiences expect this time we asked?

Shepshed History Society The 13th December Shepshed History Society members were invited along to partake in some light hearted entertainment which was given by Mr Chris Knight who disguised himself as a pantomime dame. Many jokes were bandied about in true pantomime land style but it was also interspersed with more serious content when Mr Knight recalled the great comic legends that graced the stage in days of old.

The successful evening then continued with a sumptuous buffet supper, mulled wine and table wine, given free by the committee in appreciation for the members loyalty given to the Society over the past year.

Loughborough Orchestra Blows Up The Horn!

The Winter concert from the Loughborough Orchestra on Saturday January 17th will feature the well known Mozart’s Horn Concerto no. 4 played by talented French Horn player, David Tollington. David enjoys a varied and exciting freelance career, working with many of the finest orchestras including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, BBC Philharmonic, Halle, RPO, Royal Northern Sinfonia, BBC National Orchestras of both Wales and Scotland, the CBSO and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. He is currently the principal horn of the Symphony Orchestra of India and his work has also taken him to Japan, China and much of Europe.

David is also involved in pop music, notably in recording with Sting!

To start the concert, the Orchestra is playing the popular and lively

Overture from The Barber of Seville by Rossini. This rousing piece is followed by one of the wonderful Hungarian Dances from Johannes Brahms. You might have to stop yourself from humming out loud to this well known melody which sweeps the listener along so completely!

The second half features Symphony no. 2 by Borodin. He was professor of Chemistry at the St. Petersburg Surgical Academy whilst working on this, so it’s not surprising it took several years to complete the symphony. But it was worth the wait for the many wonderful melodies contained within its movements.

Shepshed On Course To Regain League Status After struggling last year due to the arson attack and player availability, the RFU set Shepshed the task of fulfilling 10 fixtures this season in order prove we could meet the requirements of league Rugby next season.

Having played 8 matches already this season and a 9th scheduled in for Saturday 17th against Loughborough the target is within site.

We a further 10 fixtures planned, not including the upcoming Presidents Cup draw in February which should see us comfortably prove our worth. With some good performances put in already over the past couple of months, teams are once again starting to take notice that Shepshed RFC is back and growing at a fast rate.

A lot of effort has been put in by everyone at the club to improve the commitment and atmosphere in the club and we hope to see that rewarded with some competitive Rugby back at the high school next season.

PHOTO: Winner Alan Blood ‘Harvest Mice’ The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club have had an interesting last few weeks in 2016 at their Tuesday evening meetings beginning with a photographic tour by Club member Mike Gillingham of the Isle of Wight, much of it photographed from his own yacht. The winner of the Peter Harvey Trophy, a new award in memory of a long standing founder member of the Club who sadly died at the turn of the year, has also been selected by the members, the winning entry coming from Club Chairman Alan Harris, a photograph entitled ‘Harvest Mice’.

The Annual Dinner was held at the Greyhound, Burton-on-theWolds, in mid-December, at which the winners of the awards in this years Competition League were announced, the Open Class Joint Champions being Garry Rennocks

and Alan Blood, the Themed Class Champion being Sue Hutton, LRPS and the overall League Champion for 2016 was Alan Blood from Sue Hutton, LRPS.and Garry Rennocks in second and third places .

A further event was held at the Annual Dinner when the members celebrated, complete with a suitable cake, the founding of the Club 40 years ago in 1976. There are still three original members coming to the Club’s meetings, Alan Blood, Robert Bramley and Pete Richardson.

The Club’s meetings recommence after the Christmas break at the Council offices as usual, on 10th.

January with the annual quiz evening and then the first round of the 2017 Competition League which is taking a slightly different format from now on.

Aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course will run from Monday February 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th to encourage more men to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle.

There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too selfconscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s free!

Participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn the specially-commissioned song.

For men who haven’t sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The course will run from 7-30pm to 10pm All the material will be provided with access to course teaching materials.

Evergreens With Interest With the strings of glittery lights of Christmas being tidied away our gardens can start to look at tad drab at this time of year.

The onslaught of frost, wind and rain turns anything tender or herbaceous into withered brown skeletons and consequently we see more of the bare bones of the garden and anything hidden out of sight during the summer months suddenly becomes an eyesore!

The beauty of using evergreens in the garden is obvious in that they provide the basic structure of the garden. Many a garden has a handful of evergreen shrubs dotted around to fill in gaps or screen off walls and fences. Often they tend to look pretty boring – dark green foliage with little in the way of interest. But if you choose wisely, you can select evergreens to add colour, texture, flower and a fresh look during the grey winter months. Here are some of my favourites: Choisya – a popular shrub due to it’s ease of growth and glossy foliage.

Choisya grow surprisingly well on our heavy clay soils in the Midlands as long as they don’t sit in constantly wet soil. There are several varieties to choose from including C. Ternata, C. White Dazzler & C. Aztec Pearl – all of which have deep green foliage.

C. Sundance and Gold fingers have bright refreshing yellow foliage perfect for brightening up a border all year round. All have scented white star-shaped flowers in May/ June.

Viburnum – There are so many Viburnums available to the gardener, many of which make really good garden plants. For evergreen structure V tinus ‘Eve Price’ is a winner as it is relatively compact and is covered with clusters of white flowers with traces of pink during the winter months. It can be used on it’s own or as an informal hedge.

Nandina – A lot of plant breeding has gone in to Nandina in recent years resulting in some striking new cultivars including N. ‘Lemon & Lime’ & N. ‘Obsessed’ which have vibrant colourful foliage throughout the year. They prefer a sunny to part shady spot and will be happy in the border or in a container. Often the foliage changes colour throughout the year so the plant gives a real wow factor to the garden.

Mahonia – Some gardeners will know Mahonia as a brut of a plant which when not controlled can become a thorny monster!

Sarcoccoca – The winter scented must have. AKA Winter Box, this is a highly fragrant plant with a mass of white flowers along the stems in winter followed by black berries.

The foliage is deep green and very glossy. I like to grow this in containers so i can move the plants nearer to the house in winter to benefit from the heady fragrance.

Ilex crenata & Yew – A great alternative to Box (Buxus), these two evergreens will not succumb to the dreaded ‘Box Blight’ and can be used to create beautiful topiary forms. At this time of year topiary adds greatly to the garden, giving elegant structure and form to the space. I particularly love to use Yew as I love the deep green foliage and it keeps a very neat shape once trimmed.

With the evergreen shrubs selected, next month I’ll be looking at how to add scent to the garden in winter.

Inevitably thoughts will then turn to 2017 and what it will bring for all of us. Many experienced MPs and political commentators say they cannot remember a time when both domestic and international politics was so unpredictable. Here in Britain we expect the Government to give notice, under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, by 31 March so we can start the process of leaving the EU. This is just the start of a long and complex negotiation process. My personal view is that in leaving the EU we must not fatally undermine our economy, our constitution or our values as a country. 2017 also sees important elections in France and Germany which will influence the speed and progress of our EU negotiations.

In America January means the start of the presidency of Donald Trump and no one really knows what that will mean for the USA nor for America’s place in the world. There are many other parts of the world where there is great uncertainty about how events will unfold in 2017 – Syria and Yemen, for example. I wish all Shepshed Eye readers a successful, healthy and happy 2017.

Closer to home I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the fabulous

Shepshed Rotary’s Christmas Tree festival at St Botolph’s Church.

Choosing a tree to vote for is always extremely difficult and I was struck by the amazing creativity and effort of all those exhibiting.

I recently attended one of my regular catch-up meetings with the Chief Executive and Leader of Leicestershire County Council.

Issues on the agenda included the Tickow Lane/Hallamford Road junction and also the changes in Shepshed education particularly the merger of Shepshed High School and Hind Leys and their academy conversion.

Finally, the Government is asking for views on what it will take to transform employment prospects for disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. The UK employment rate is the highest since records began, but there are fewer than 5 in 10 disabled people in employment, compared with 8 in 10 non-disabled people, and this has been the case for several years. The Government remains committed to financially supporting those with the most severe or life-limiting disabilities and conditions who are unable to work. Oxley Primary School - Young At Heart Event

On Thursday 15th December we held our annual Young at Heart event in school. This is where we invite members of the local community, grandparents, ex-parents or others with links to the school. During the afternoon, they were treated to homemade cakes made in the school kitchen. Children from Year 5 served hot drinks to the guests and chatted to them. There was also entertainment from different groups of children on stage, performing favourite songs from their Christmas shows.

CHRISTINE RADFORD As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc.

Leicester, Leicestershire And Rutland Combined Fire Service I sit on the Fire Service as a representative of the County and I am also Chairman of the Corporate Governance Committee. I would just like to bring you up to date with what is happening within the Fire Service following negative publicity.

A new Fire and Rescue Station in Castle Donnington has now been completed, Collaboration discussions have taken place with the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) who wish to utilise space at the new station.

Coalville Extension Project will create a hub for all 3 emergency services at the Coalville Fire and Rescue Station (Police, Ambulance and Fire).The planning application has been approved and the extension is expected to be completed towards the end of September 2017.

5 new Tactical Response Vehicles (TRVs) have been ordered.

Firebike and Virtual Reality VF4 Car project has enhanced road safety by providing a new Firebike and 360 degree virtual reality education equipment. This has gone round to schools and similar establishment to show the reality of driving fast and has been well received.

Braunstone Blues Project is a multi-agency partnership project that is aimed towards reducing public service demand within the Braunstone Park Area of Leicester.

Data sharing agreements are now in place to ensure that the necessary statistical information can be captured and the most vulnerable members of the

community can be identified and given assistance.

Recent performance data shows a reduction in demand on both EMAS and the Police.

Shepshed Fire Station is looking for new on-call firefighters in Shepshed. Recruits must live or work within four minutes of the station. For more information call 0116 2872241 or visit www. leicestershire-fire.gov.uk/careers Child Sexual Exploitation Awareness of child sexual exploitation (CSE) has never been greater due to high profile national cases. In 2014 County joined forces with Leicestershire Police to set up a joint CSE team and this is now being expanded to include other partners. County have contributed £500,000 to bolster the team and recently added 4 new recruits, which now consists of 8 staff and over 20 police officers, including the force’s Missing from Home Team.

It works closely with partners to help and protect children at risk of CSE and victims. In the past 12 months the team has received 303 referrals, a 64% increase.

The CSE Team is making an impact – a recent case, Operation Quartz saw partnership working and a man who had groomed girls with drugs receive an eightyear prison sentence.

A thought provoking and powerful play toured more than 50 schools in the autumn encouraging young people to speak out about child sexual exploitation. More than 10,000 pupils watched the hard hitting performance which signs a light on CSE and where to go for help.

Christmas Day At The Glenmore Centre

Christmas Day for people who would otherwise be on their own was a great success as usual. Over 40 people sat down for lunch, Father Michael came and said Grace and in the afternoon Father Christmas paid a visit giving everybody a box of biscuits.

This would not be able to take place without the support of volunteers and cooks who give up their Christmas Day to make it such an eventful day.

Great Central Railway The design for the New Museum has been chosen, whilst the building itself will be just outside the borough, next to the Leicester North Station near Birstall, the new museum will enable Charnwood’s own railway to showcase it prized processions – beautifully restored, working steam locos in situ and under steam through the Soar Valley on what is the country’s only mainline heritage railway. The GCR is working with the National Railway Museum at York to effectively be its ‘working arm’ allowing people to witness our fascinating railway history in motion rather than as a highly polished static exhibit.

Planning Cllr Radford and Tassell have been supporting residents who live near to the proposed erection of a single dwelling on land between 9 & 11 Griffin Close. The plot is very small, no vehicular access or parking for vehicles and over domination of the surrounding properties. Cllr Radford has asked that this application goes before a plans committee.

Cllr Radford and Tassell spoke recently at a plans committee in support of an application at Ivy Cottage, 197A Ashby Road West, where the owner wanted to convert the disused Kennels into a dwelling with the erection of a carport and a carport to the existing property. Planning Officers were recommending refusal. Cllr Tassell asked for it to go before a plans committee. Both Councillors felt that this conversion would improve the area and the plans committee agreed and approval with conditions attached was agreed.

Cllr Bebbington and Tassell are helping the residents of Iveshead Road to fight against the detailed planning application for land to the rear of number 62 Iveshead Road. Cllr Bebbington is the Ward Councillor and has called in this application to go before the plans committee while Cllr Tassell is helping in her capacity as a resident of the area and will speak against the proposal at the plans committee to represent the residents.

Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme During 2016 Cllr Joan Tassell sat on a panel at Charnwood to bring in refugees from Syria under the Governments Scheme. To date only two families have arrived in Charnwood and are living in Loughborough. From the outset of the project it was decided to use properties in the private sector to house these families rather than use Council stock, which is becoming increasingly rare due to the Right to Buy Act. At the last update it was understood that the children have settled into school and are now beginning to speak the English language. At the same time the adult members of the families have integrated well into the community and they are also being taught how to speak English.

Taking Steps To Avoid Becoming A Victim Of Crime Some of you will have received a copy recently of Charnwood News in which it highlights ways to avoid becoming a victim of crime, please read it and take note.

Such as leave a light on if you are going out or use time switches, make sure your handbag, purse or wallet is secure when shopping.

When using cash points be aware of your surroundings, if you see anything suspicious move to another cash point. If you can avoid it, never walk home alone; don’t take short cuts through alleys.

Remember your safety and wellbeing is far more important than material belongings.
