The Nottingham’s Shepshed team swapped corporate navy for bright pink and raised over £300 for Breast Cancer Care in the process. Staff and customers alike ‘turned pink’ by donning colourful clothes and the branch team sold pin badges, sweet cones and held a ‘pink raffle’ with prizes donated by local businesses; Inca UK, Hallcroft Opticians, The Dog House, Ryatt Optometry, Bloomin Marvellous, Kims Café, Charnwood Fish Bar, Through the Looking Glass Boutique, Akash Tandoori, Kirks Cycles, Darcy Fitness, and Sparkells Salon. Customer adviser Ria Cook said: “We were delighted with the response from customers and local businesses, who really got behind what clearly is a very important cause for a lot of people in Shepshed and beyond. We had a really fun day and, most importantly of all, managed to raise plenty of awareness of and money for Breast Cancer Care.”

Shepshed History Society

Shepshed & District Camera Club

Tuesday the 8th November saw the Shepshed History Society having a very enlightening and enjoyable talk given by Miss Helen Baxter of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation. Based in the depths of the glorious Charnwood Forest, Helen went onto to explain how this well known local charity was first begun by Mr David Clarke and named after his mother Mrs Ivy Shuttlewood. David had been a wealthy manufacturer of cardboard boxes who later went into motor racing where he was a great success. Sadly though his career was cut short after he had a serious accident while racing one day. So on his recovery erring on the side of caution he wisely gave up the sport and was able to sell his car for five and a half million pounds. Having this abundance of cash he soon set about creating this now very famous charity set in the heart of the forest that has given so much enjoyment to locally housebound and elderly people as well as handicapped children. Ulverscoft Manor is famous for providing a hot nourishing meal and entertainment for the housebound pensioners and Ulverscroft Grange has since been turned into a delightful restaurant that the general public are welcome to make use of.

The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club have had an interesting and exciting last few weeks at their Tuesday evening meetings beginning with an excellent presentation by local photographers Peter Jones and Sue Wilson entitled ‘India, Wildlife and Culture’. During this they were taken on a photographic tour through various parts of that offtimes mysterious country which showed a cross section of daily life and the natural history and wildlife.

As well as the idyllic countryside to enjoy there, there are two charity shops open and there is a magnificent model railway set started by Mr Clarke which takes up the space of a small barn and the public are welcome to visit this site which is usually opened on a Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Mr Clarke was also a great benefactor to the Great Central Railway Trust where he sadly passed away one day while travelling on a much loved steam train. A fitting passing for a brilliant, caring man who had a heart of gold and is still sadly missed by those who knew him and later by the many volunteers who still carry on with his stirling charitable work. The December meeting on Tuesday the 13th will be the Christmas Social evening where there will be a free buffet supper and entertainment given by Mr Chris Knight who will be masquerading as a pantomime dame.

The following two weeks involved the members in practical activities, firstly an outdoor session of night photography on Bonfire Night at a local farm and then an indoor session involving table-top photography. The final evening devoted to the 2016 competition league came a week later and the Club welcomed another local photographer, Mandy Sherrington of the Sileby Club, to judge the Open class for prints and the Themed Class, this time the subject being ‘Panning’, for the projected images. In the Open class all the awards were taken by Alan Blood who was first with ‘Lincoln Busker’ as well as gaining a Highly Commended and Alan Harris who took second and third places together with a Highly

Commended. In the Themed class Kevin Padmore was first with ‘Holding Tight’ and he also gained a Highly Commended, Brian Walbey took second place whilst Alan Harris featured once again with third place and a Highly Commended. Yet another local photographer, this time Bill Allsopp from Ellistown, gave a very interesting and informative talk at the most recent meeting entitled ‘British Landscapes in Colour and Mono’ in which he not only projected many of his extremely good landscape images from almost every corner of the U.K, but he also gave the members lots of tips as to how to go about achieving equally good results in their own landscape images. There are just three meetings left before the Christmas break during which the members will vie to win the Peter Harvey Trophy, a new award in memory of a long standing member who sadly died at the turn of the year, and then at the Annual Dinner the winners of the awards in this years Competition League will be announced. The Club’s meetings recommence after the Christmas break at the Council offices as usual, on 10th. January with the annual quiz evening and then the first round of the 2017 Competition League which for next year is taking a slightly different format.

Lincoln Busker - Alan Blood

Shepshed Probus Club President Philip Moore welcomed members to the November meeting of the Shepshed Probus Club. After apologies for absence, a welcome to our guest and our in-house speaker were announced, the Secretary gave final details the annual luncheon, the Remembrance Day parade and advance notice of the special meeting in December. Lunch was then taken followed by the raffle draw after which our member Steve Bodycote gave a talk on “Life in the Fleet Air Arm”. He first outlined the history of the service and the development of aircraft carriers and their aircraft up to the present day. His service ran from the mid-fifties and as well as giving details of the serious side of his service and the various crew duties of 2000 men on a large aircraft carrier he included several humerous incidents as well. All in all an interesting and entertaining talk for which the members thanked Steve. Our next meeting is our Xmas luncheon on December 5th with a magician as entertainment. New members are welcome, contact the Secretary on 01509 769802.

Shepshed Town Bowls Club Presentation Night Shepshed Town Bowls Club held its annual presentation night on Saturday 12th November, when the winners of all Club Competitions throughout the 2016 season were presented with their trophies.

LOCAL NEWS

Remembering Our Loved Ones For many people, we have Christmas approaching which does not bring with it the joy and happiness that is advertised on television or in greeting cards. They may be facing Christmas after the death of a loved one, or gone through an emotional trauma, after a divorce. Perhaps they have been unable to have a child. Or perhaps they feel pressured and overwhelmed by the Christmas preparations. St Botolphs church are opening their doors on Saturday 17th December between 2pm – 6pm in an attempt to reach out to people who feel such burdens by adding a open afternoon giving them a quite time in remembering a loved one. We have a memory tree, where people can write a message or a prayer to their loved ones, sit quietly, light a candle with soft music playing in the background. We have clergy and our pastoral assistant at hand if anybody wants to talk or prayed for. We have tea & coffee and mince pies for anyone. Everyone in the community is welcome, including people who are not members of the church. It is wonderful to have a quiet, spiritual time in the midst of a busy season. This quiet time is about paying attention to the needs of the people beyond the local church walls, and providing them with a needed service. This is a vital ministry during the Christmas period, and we are committed to it for the sake of the members of both our church and of the community. We need to be reminded of the message of Hope the Christmas season brings. This is a place where many have an opportunity to grieve, but also to experience that Hope. People really appreciate an opportunity to respond to what they are going through in this season. This was the message that we consistently heard by those of us involved last year. Merry Christmas God bless you all. Diane Melton,

Pastoral Assistant St Botolphs church.

Shepshed Lions Club Members Work Hard, But Play Hard As Well

Shepshed Lions Club Supports The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

There are new Licensee’s in the Bull and Bush Public House, Sullington Road, Shepshed and they are already making a difference in their local community.

As many of you will know, Shepshed Lions Club members work hard all year round to help those less fortunate in our community, but they also play hard.

Shepshed Lions Club prides itself on their support for a diverse range of people and projects they support, trying to help those in need, wherever possible.

On Saturday 19th November they held a “Race Night” to raise funds for the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders and to give children in the Town a Christmas Party. They very generously donated £116 to the Community First Responders funds to support their work in the local area.

At Halloween, members of the club got together for a Halloween party and fancy dress was taken to a higher level by some of them!! A good night was had by all, with good food, good friends and the occasional glass of something very pleasant to help the night flow.

Each year The Salvation Army holds a Christmas Appeal for the homeless. The appeal provides them with food, shelter and medical care over the Festive Season. This year Lion President Ann Bodycote has presented a cheque for £650 towards this Year’s Salvation Army Appeal. She is pictured presenting the cheque to Marta Ajer of the Salvation Army.

Bob Lilley, Coordinator of the Responders said, “I would like to say a big thank you to the Licensee’s and the customers for their generous support to our team. This money will help towards the costs of new equipment and protective clothing for our volunteers. I wish them all the best in their new venture at The Bull and Bush”.

On Monday 21st November members gathered together at the home address of one member, Colin, with a choice of home made soups, and a very fiendish picture quiz, to confuse most of those present. And for good measure, a good dose of friendship and fellowship made the evening pass very quickly.

The Friends Of Charnwood Forest “Lacemakers and Luddites”

Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland Have Opened The Doors To A New Office In Loughborough

Talk by Mr Tony Jarram Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall Monday January 23 at 7.30 p.m.

A £0.5m Big Lottery award has enabled Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland to continue its health and wellbeing service in the Hinckley area and to extend it into Charnwood and North West Leicestershire.

An illustrated talk of the of the development of lacemaking from hand made to machine production. The story is centred on the East Midlands especially Loughborough and its environs. It is a story of invention, migration and destruction and is as full of twists and turns as lace itself. The research for this project started with an exhibition by the Friends of Charnwood Museum in 2007 and has continued ever since with an international following by the descendants of former lace workers. A recent exhibition in Loughborough Library further enhanced the story.

A new team has taken up residence in offices above the charity shop at 24 Biggin Street, Loughborough to offer health & wellbeing activities, regular Information & Advice drop-ins and Befriending to older people across the Charnwood area.

Tony will raise several controversial theories relating to the Luddite attack in Loughborough and the reasons why the industry left the town to reestablish in the South West of England and beyond.

Anna Southam, Befriending Co-ordinator commented: “This

Come to our MilkBot to enjoy, Tasty, Fresh, Free Range, Ayrshire Milk! Nourish your family your traditional way, straight from the farm gate!

We have lovely brown and white Ayrshire cows who are really well cared for adding to cost of production where their well being doesn't mean corners are cut just because we aren't paid what the milk is worth. With that in mind we have decided to sell free range milk direct to the local area to appreciate what wonderful fresh milk tastes like. Many people ask is raw milk safe and I can confidently answer "yes". Our milk is stringently sampled by The Food Standards Agency also the whole process from calves to the milking parkour is checked and we passed with flying colours. The milk is tested daily and has a lower bacteria count than a national supermarket brand we compared it with. Natural untreated milk has many health benefits more nutrious than pasteurised milk, probiotic ,bursting with vitamins (A,D,E and k2 ) minerals, antioxidants and immune boosting properties, easier to digest, rich in linoleic acid (helps fight cancer)

It is believed by research in America it can help asthma and allergies. Many people who are lactose intolerant can drink raw milk. More importantly than anything it is fresh and local and hopefully takes us back to a time where there is a link between the local farm and local residents. It will be great to educate children where the milk comes from. My family have had the benefit of our lovely, sweet, tasty, free range milk for years now we'd like to share it. We are open for customers please come along and see us and the girls for the taste of proper milk once more. It's even fun to serve yourself with the milk through our milk bot near the farm gate. Want to see the MilkBot in action? You can see the video on Facebook: @CharnwoodsFarmNaturalMilk Find us at: Charnwood Forest Farm Charley Road Loughborough, LE12 9XJ Call us on: 07585 551558

The Parade left from outside of the Council Offices, led by the Leicestershire and Rutland County Pipe Band followed by Members of the Clergy, local dignitaries and various local groups and organisations. During the service in Glenmore Park, attended by several hundred, many wreaths were laid. The names of those who sadly lost their lives in the Wars was read out by Rev Howard Ketton. Hathern Band also accompanied the service. Shepshed Lions kindly volunteered to distribute the order of service, which was much appreciated. As part of the City and County’s commemoration of the Centenary of the First World War Shepshed Town Council joined in the campaign to support the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal by lighting up a building or landmark in red. Without a doubt, Shepshed did show it’s respect for all those who sacrificed their lives.

Decorating Outdoors Decorating Outdoors Christmas is not far away and the shops and high streets are bedecked with festive flair. We all love to decorate interiors with trees, tinsel & fairy lights and It’s becoming more fashionable to light up our exteriors too. Driving through my hometown seeing garden trees festooned with lights gives me a really festive feel.

For those who don’t want to opt for the bright and flashing themed light set ups on offer, there are other garden related options to add Christmas cheer to the entrance way of the home. Topiary I love the elegant structure which topiary gives. Box (Buxus) is easily available from garden centres and DIY stores on the run up to Christmas. The most popular shapes are spheres, but for Christmas the cones or pyramids seem most appropriate. Box is the most affordable but Yew (Taxus) and Ilex crenata are good options too as they are not affected by the dreaded Box Blight. Planted in simple terracotta, stone or resin containers they add green formality to either side of a doorway and with the addition of fairy lights they take on a very festive look. Be sure to use exterior grade fairy lights. Festive Containers I like to plant up containers at this time of year with evergreen

Potted Christmas Trees As I sit writing this article in midNovember, I have today seen the first potted Christmas trees available at my local supermarket! For me November is a tad early to be buying a tree for indoor use, but they are great used outdoors where they won’t get too hot or dry and will therefore retain their leaves to Christmas & beyond. Again these look great with exterior lights and can be decked with florists ribbon (waterproof), cones and berries to give a natural and stylish look. Christmas Wreaths Wreaths are certainly the most popular way of bringing festive cheer to the entrance way. A simple holly ring gives classic elegance. For a more elaborate wreath search your local market, florist or garden centre for a wreath made using an array of colourful foliage or twigs like belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT

NICKY MORGAN

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I’d like to congratulate everyone at Christchurch Gilbert & Sullivan who performed or supported their excellent HMS Pinafore held at Hind Leys recently. It was such a pleasure to watch the production and thank you to the cast for baking some delicious cakes too! More good news is that Shepshed based Urgo Medical has been recognised as one of the top 100 manufacturers by THE Manufacturer Magazine. Urgo Medical was nominated by the Made in Britain organisation for the award of “unsung hero” who recognised its corporate vision to encourage professional development amongst its employees at every level of the business. I had the pleasure of visiting Urgo Medical and meeting the staff there a while ago. It is great to have such a successful and well-recognised business based locally. Regular readers will know that I have long been a supporter of the electrification of the Midland Mainline – the train line we use from Loughborough station to get to London and on to Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. I am concerned that the Department for Transport might be re-thinking its commitment to the electrification project because of cost overruns on other lines elsewhere in the country. Earlier this month I led a debate in Parliament on this and the Minister was left in no doubt that the Midlands does not expect to

be left behind in this project which will increase capacity, introduce quieter and more environmentally friendly trains and support commuters and businesses. I am continuing to work with other Leicestershire and Leicester MPs on the threat to close the surgical part of the Children’s Heart Unit at Glenfield Hospital. I know many local families have benefited from the expertise at Glenfield and it would be a travesty to see the surgical unit closed and for families to have to travel further afield. In the last few weeks I’ve attended a meeting with the Health Minister, Philip Dunne, to set out the objections to the proposals and I remain in close contact with the Hospital about the work they are doing to lead the campaign to stop the closure. One way to show your support is to sign the online petition which you can do at https://petition. parliament.uk/petitions/160455. There is also an offline petition and the total number of signatures is almost 70,000. Once we reach 100,000 signatures the petition will be debated in Parliament. If you would like to help with getting hard copies of the petition signed then e-mail shirleyb60@ virginmedia.com. Finally, can I wish all Shepshed Eye readers a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for the start of 2017.

Shepshed Teen Takes Over Job From Local MP Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan temporarily gave up her position earlier this month to let Hind Leys Student Josh Rutt take over her job for the day. It was part of the Children Commissioner’s Takeover Challenge which is a national event that sees children and young people welcomed into a wide variety of working environments to take over adults roles for the day. The young people taking part gain a valuable insight into decision making processes as well as being able to have their voice heard. Last year more nearly 50,000 children took part with over 1,100 organisations involved. During the day, Josh took over Nicky’s job, playing a vital role in local decision making. In the morning he visited Loughborough University where he attended an event encouraging women into the automotive industry. Later in the morning he attended a meeting with the West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, along with the MP for Charnwood Ed Argar. In the afternoon he met with the Defence Discount Service who provide retail discounts to

members of the armed forces. He was able to promote the scheme when he met with Marks & Spencer later in the day. He rounded off the day’s events attending a constituency advice surgery. Commenting on the day, Josh said “The experience was very enjoyable and gave a great insight into what a day is like for an MP, as well as the type of work they do outside of Parliament. Furthermore, it showed the pivotal role that Nicky plays both locally and nationally, helping connect constituents with the right people to solve any issue, and helping small business owners reach larger, nationwide businesses in order to aid both their business and the community.” Nicky commented: “Josh played a hugely important role and certainly stepped up to the challenge being Loughborough’s MP for the day. His input was incredibly useful and everyone he met valued his input in the day’s discussions. I can certainly see him becoming a Member of Parliament in the future!” For more information about the Takeover Challenge, please visit: www.childrenscommissioner.gov. uk/learn-more/takeover-challenge

CHRISTINE RADFORD As your County Councillor, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and to remind you that I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Highway Issues I had a meeting with officers from County on 24th November to discuss highway issues in Shepshed. Speeding on Tickow Lane and the implications of all the new houses in the area and its junction with Anson Road and the cross roads at Belton Street and Oakley Road were on the agenda. I invited the Clerk to Shepshed Town Council and the other Borough Councillors to this meeting. Problems in the area of Paterson Place with Brook Street and Countrymans Way with Brook Street have also been raised due to parked cars/vans parking near to the junctions. I have been trying to get yellow lines in this area for some years. Speeding on the roads in Shepshed is an on-going problem which I am trying to get addressed. Bradgate Park – Dogs A restriction requiring dogs to be on leads was due to end at the end of October. Since the relaxation of the restriction on 1st November there have been 5 serious deer chases recorded together with a similar number of minor incidents. As we approach the winter when the dee are vulnerable as they us up their body fat reserves and the females are pregnant, the Trust has had to extend the restriction so that it applies for 12 months of the year.

This is unfortunate, but prior to these restrictions we lost twothirds of two consecutive cohorts of Red Deer calves as a result of dog chases and we cannot afford to let this happen again. M1 Junction 23 and A512 improvements A number of residents have contacted me regarding seeing men/women with yellow jackets on surveying the A512. This work being carried out to upgrade the M1 junction and includes improvements to the A512, due mainly to the increase in housing developments both in Shepshed and West of Loughborough. Fostering Between April-September, 7 new in-house foster carers were approved. A four week Facebook campaign on going from 24th September generated 5 leads so far. A four week Facebook campaign, ongoing from 3rd October, to recruit carers for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeker Children generated 15 leads so far. There will be a constant “dripping” of messages via “other” social media (Twitter/Facebook) and County’s own blog. As well as the popular ‘Find out about Fostering’ based at County Hall which runs every three weeks, locality events are booked in Surestart centres around the county. To find out more about Fostering contact Nicci Collins, Head of Strategy on Nicci.Collins@leics. gov.uk or 0116 3054504. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or email christine_ radford@hotmail.com or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am.

Shepshed Toy Library

If successful, it will deliver around £3million worth of projects to protect and celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of Charnwood Forest between 2020 and 2025.

Charnwood on its last round of community grants on 17th November gave £3,000 to Shepshed Toy Library.

Charnwood Forest Landscape Partnership The partners in the Charnwood Forest Regional Park are developing a new Landscape Partnership bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to be submitted in June 2017.

Shepshed Toy Library is looking for more fundraisers and trustees, for more information please call 01509 601146 or e mail shepshedtoylib@yahoo.co.uk.

The money will need to be spent on delivering a range of project which will meet HLF’s priorities.

The Charnwood Sports Awards will have taken place on 5th December – a fantastic range of local sports clubs, coaches and athletes submitted applications to 10 categories and the shortlisting proved difficult – especially for one of the categories, where out of five applicants, three of them had won 4 gold medals between them at the Rio games…. Only in Loughborough would this happen.

Planning and Anti-Social behaviour have taken up a large amount of our time this past month. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us.
