The Friends Of Charnwood Forest

Our 30th Birthday Party Members of Friends of Charnwood Forest (FOCF) celebrated their 30th anniversary, June 26th, with a Hog Roast at The Brand, Woodhouse Eaves, by kind permission of Colonel and Mrs Martin.

Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated legacy to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times.

The offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity.

Mrs Janie Martin, President, said how pleased they were to see so many members here again and went on to praise the work of the Committee and Officers, not only for today’s party but also for their many hours of hard work for the Society.

Peter Bertram, founder member and first Chairman, spoke of the origins of the Society, particularly mentioning Colonel Andrew Martin, Lord Lieutenant, and David Thorpe and their efforts in founding the Society. He mentioned past achievements and a steady plan for the future, based on our strong membership and sound finances. Finally he proposed a toast to Friends of Charnwood Forest and its future.

Shepshed Inner Wheel Club Shepshed Inner Wheel Club held their handover meeting at The Link Hotel, Loughborough on Tuesday 5th July. This event was held jointly with the Rotary Club of Shepshed and The Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood. Retiring President Carole handed the chain of office to Enid Smith. Enid is the most senior member of our club. Enid will outline her year to members at the August meeting.

Nursery Close Floods!

I recently had to witness, yet again, the rainwater overwhelming the inadequate drains in one part of Nursery Close. This, again, flooded my garage, drive and the neighbouring gardens, foot paths and green space with sewerage.

This was later reported as a ‘once in 50 year’ storm – the 6th that I can account in the 10 or so years I have lived there. I recall that the Planning application for new houses on Oakley Road would have their systems fed into ours. I hope that the people responsible for the services come up with a proper plan that would not further add to the misery that these events can cause.

Race Winner Reunited With Her Duck During the recent successful ‘ONE Weekend in Kegworth’ event, the Kegworth based Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood organised a Charity Duck Race on the River Soar.

The Rotarians managed to sell 908 ducks, and they were launched into the river near Kegworth Bridge with the help of the Sea Scouts from Long Eaton and the kayakers from the South Notts Community 1st Responders. The sale of ducks raised over £1500 which will be distributed among local and national Rotary charities.

Although the weather on the day

was wet, a decent crowd gathered to watch the race.

Rotary President Paul Miles thanked all those involved, especially Phil and John Mellors, who allowed access to the river and provided valuable advice. He was pleased with the success of the event and said the club may hold a similar race in the future.

After the race, the winner Sarah Cliff from Kegworth was reunited with her Duck (called Ed) and presented with her prize of £100.

The second placed duck earned its owner, Norma Pearce from Nottingham, £50.

The pictures show the Sea Scouts launching the ducks, and Sarah receiving her duck and winnings from Rotarian Fred Thompson.

It is bad enough having rain water flood my front drive every time it rains but having a smelly garage and dirty contents is quite revolting.

This year, there’s been a new group of people helping to support the pool, and we want to make sure everyone knows about it. Hind Leys Swimming Pool is one of the largest, with the cleanest water, in the county!

We’re making sure the pool is open as much as possible for the holiday period. If you’ve not been for a while, you’ll love the refurbished changing rooms, with new lockers and cubicles.

If you look on the Hind Leys Swimming Pool Facebook page, you’ll find all the information about the summer playscheme, and about one-to-one lessons.

We’ve added daily swim sessions, Monday to Thursday, 3pm to 4pm from July 25th to August 25th, and are also open for our usual public pool sessions: Sundays 10-12; Tuesdays 6 – 6.45 adult beginners, 6.45 – 7.30 lane swim, 7.30 – 815 Aquafit; Wednesdays 6-8pm public swim and 8-9pm lane swim.

My thanks to Councillor Christine Radford who answered her phone at 8am and asked Nicky Morgan’s office to notify Severn Trent.

It took two weeks and several complaints before a representative from STW went to look in my garage and while he did agree that there is evidence of waste in my garage from their system, he wasn’t over hopeful of getting them to clean it up. My dirty garage isn’t high up their list on a cost/benefit ratio, and as I have cleaned up before why shouldn’t I do it again....

Crown Crazy At Nottingham Building Society The Shepshed branch of the Nottingham Building Society (The Nottingham) were inundated with entries for their latest colouring competition in aid of the Queens 90th birthday celebration. With so many entries from the local schools and nurseries they eventually had to choose 4 winners.

Colouring champions Esmee Bright, Lilliana Buccheri, Paisley Rose and Kiedis Toms dropped into the branch this week to pick up their prizes of a summer goodie bag each, which was presented to them by the Shepshed team.

Customer Reviewer, Jade Hardy said ‘we were so pleased with the support we received form the local primary schools and nurseries, and we had so many fantastic entries; there was glitter and sequins everywhere!’

Are held on the second Saturday of each month at Shepshed Town Council offices in Charnwood Road from 11am until 12 noon.

A Shepshed Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting will be held Tuesday 9th August. Local residents are invited to attend the meeting at Shepshed High School in Forest Street from 6:30 pm. PCSO 6046 Davis will be attending.

Shepshed History Society June Meeting A highly entertaining evening was given to the Shepshed History Society when on the 14th June, Mr Gareth King came and spoke about how the meaning of our towns and villages came into being.

Basically theses names have all originated from the many varied invaders that Britain has had over the centuries, Romans, Vikings Danes, Normans etc.

Each different invader changing our names for their own convenience. Many names of course depicted the trade that that particular village was known for. For example Beeby, their basic trade was making honey and so the list is endless and is self explanatory in lots of cases.

Ton means settlement, ley means open clearing and normally the name is in two parts, the first half explaining the trade they were known for and the second part explaining the indigenous area they were situated in.

However interesting deviations to this hypothesis do appear from time to time for example Burton Lazars refers to their Leper Hospital they had at one time and Sinope is a Turkish word and no one really knows how this came about.

Mr King proved to have an extraordinary amount of intriguing and amusing information and it was a talk giving us not only facts but it also gave the society an evening of fun as well as we travelled into the past and had an in sight into the origins of how our history came in to being via our fascinating place names.

The July meeting will be given on the 12th and the speaker will be Mr Mike Riley and the subject to be 'The Great Central Railway, Past, Present and Future. Everyone is welcome to join us at the Glenmore Centre Shepshed.

A very enjoyable combined threeway Presidential Changeover Meeting was held last week at the Link Hotel to celebrate the three long established Clubs in Shepshed.

The Rotary Club of Shepshed, formed 70 years ago, were joined by their daughter Club The Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood which was formed in 1988, and the Ladies of Shepshed Inner Wheel Club, (originally formed by the wifes of Rotarians 69 years ago, this is now open to non Rotarians) Rotary is a dual gender Service Organisation. All three Clubs have spent a busy past year working on fund raising projects relating to Schools, the Community and International and Local Charities.

Congratulations to Miss Rachael Lamb from Coalville who won the The Horse Shepshed competition.

Shepshed WI July Meeting Members of Shepshed WI welcomed Deborah Spencer who came to speak on behalf of Long Clawson Dairies who make Stilton cheese for all of our supermarkets and overseas. Long Clawson produce award winning cheeses and take part in the three day International Cheese Awards at Nantwich where all manufacturers exhibit. Deborah told members about how the cheese is made and was proud to say that Prince Charles had visited the Dairy in 2011 to celebrate their centenary.

The announcements consisted of details of two group outings which were coming up later in the year to Denby Pottery and Christmas at Chatsworth House.

Jars of sweets were requested for the sweet tombola at the August Bank Holiday carnival in Shepshed and plans for a visit for tea at Ulverscroft Manor and a supper club visit to the Jolly Farmers were discussed. Members were informed that the coffee morning which took place in memory of the late Glenis Brooks raised £310 for the Volunteer Centre and thanks was given to all those who took part or baked cakes.

Community Service Recognition Award It was with great pleasure that President Paul Miles (left) of the Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club presented Rotarian Peter Hickling with a Community Service Award at the annual change of club officers.

Community Service is an opportunity for Rotary to use its many skills to give back something to the areas in which the members live. The projects are varied but all have a common theme of helping the needs of particular and diverse groups.

One such project carried out by the club involved the creation of a sensory area within the wellbeing garden recently completed in conjunction with the Shepshed Volunteer Centre.

A wasteland was turned into an area for quite reflection, an oasis for people of all abilities to find peace and solace in an all too busy world.

Involving the members in over 600 hours of backbreaking work, donation collections and sponsorship arrangements, it all required careful and meticulous planning.

Team leader Peter carried out these duties with tact and professionalism. His enthusiasm and encouragement enabled us all to work as a team and complete on time and within budget.

Peter thanked the President and the Club for all their support during the year and looks forward to the next challenge.

Calling All Knitters!

It’s Time To Join The Big Knit For Age UK Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on nimble-fingered knitters in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to get creative and knit little hats for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit to help older people keep warm and well in winter.

Now in its 13th year, The Big Knit returns and budding knitters across the UK are being called upon to knit miniature woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from February 2017.

For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund their winter projects.

Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on local knitters to get as many hats as possible to them by the end of November latest to meet their challenging target of 42,000 and needs knitters and those wanting to give it a go to make this a reality.

Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every eight minutes because of the cold. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to help older people keep warm and well in winter.

Last year alone, more than 800,000 hats were lovingly created, with designs including a bird cage, fruit, soldiers, peas in a pod, a bee’s nest, a crown and fishermen with their catch.

Peter Ralphs, Business Development Manager at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “The colder months of the year can be really tough for many older people who can face difficulties protecting themselves from the harsh winter weather, getting out and about and staying connected.

That’s why it’s so important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter services. We need our knitters to create lots of miniature hats so we can keep helping older people in the local area.”

Shepshed RFC Unveil New Logo This month sees a huge change at Shepshed RFC with the club adopting a brand new logo after 30 years. Founded in 1985 the club has retained it’s original logo, albeit with some minor alterations or variations along the way, however the core distinctive image always remained.

That is all history as in July the club voted to change it’s logo via an online poll between club members. Working alongside a local graphic designer, a number of options were created including some further variations of the original. These designs were presented to the committee to reduce the options to 2 choices. Members were then invited to vote online to decide which would take pride of place as the clubs new logo.

The provided a clear winner with 62% voting in favour of a design sporting a brand new tribal inspired rams head within a shield in the clubs traditional colours of red & black. The club decided this was the right time to move forward with the set up of our new junior section and the recent celebration of 30 years of Rugby in Shepshed.

Produce From The Garden

Well all of the rain we’ve been having this year has certainly benefited the fruit and vegetables in my garden. The cold mornings have slowed the growth of the beans and potatoes but I now have brassicas, courgettes, salad leaves and radishes by the trug full.

Braising Fennel

Yes it takes some planning and time to grow your own but it is such a rewarding thing to do when you can harvest all sorts of edible delights from right outside the back door or from the allotment and turn them in to tasty dishes.

Strawberries

The thing I harvest most from the garden is lettuce and salad leaves.

I particularly favour soft butterhead and loose leaf lettuce which hold well in the garden and are slow to bolt. Rocket is something I sow infrequently and it soon shoots up to the skies to flower so it’s a brief but welcome crop to add to a salad bowl or sandwich.

My favourite way to eat salads is dressed with a simple French dressing of olive oil, cider vinegar, mustard and salt and pepper shaken in a glass bottle before pouring over the fresh leaves. I have a salad spinner so that I can rinse the leaves and dry them before dressing. It also helps to keep the lettuce fresh in the fridge.

Tomatoes

Most of my tomato crop is eaten fresh as I grow ‘Sungold’ – a cherry type that is perfect to eat straight from the plant. I also grow a beefsteak called ‘Cuor de Bue’ which lends itself to slicing for sandwiches and once I have a glut I roast them with a generous slosh of extra virgin olive oil, black pepper and herbs from the garden like Rosemary and Oregano. The resulting intensely flavoured fruit are great mixed through pasta, made into a soup or popped into the freezer for use in the winter in casseroles.

Fennel

Fennel is something which has grown on me over the years. As a child I found the intense aniseed flavour too strong for my palette, but I now love the herbal fresh flavour and eat the bulbs, herb and dried fennels seeds. The Florence fennel bulbs I grow are delicious sliced in to salads with orange but I particularly love the bulb segmented and braised in butter and vermouth to give a tender side dish to accompany meat and fish, or a sprinkle the top with bread crumbs and cheese for a main dish. Herb fennel is lovely with chicken so I always add some to the roasting pan to infuse the bird with aniseed notes.

Potatoes

Freshly dug waxy new potatoes are a joy to eat. I’m not a fan of potatoes normally but dug straight from the ground and boiled then and there they are delicious. A knob of butter is all they need, but when I want to jazz them up I’ll add a handful of parsley from the garden and a grating of lemon zest.

I raid my herb patch for chives, fennel herb and garlic chives which are great for potato salads with either a drizzle of olive oil or a dollop of mayonnaise.

Soft Fruit

From my fruit bed I can harvest a bounty of Strawberries, Gooseberries, Black currants and Rhubarb which make lovely desserts but I also make batches of jam to last me through the winter months. Strawberry and Gooseberry jam is a favourite of mine and nothing beats homemade Blackcurrant jam for the intensity of flavour.

Those who have been MPs for many year say they cannot remember anything like it. The tragic murder of Jo Cox MP and the EU referendum result seem like long distant memories now.

I campaigned hard both locally and nationally for a Remain vote. I’m sorry that we weren’t successful but we have a clear result which it is up to the British Government to implement in a way which arrives at the best possible settlement for the British people. I’d like to thank all those who have contacted me about this, whichever side of the debate they are on, and particularly to those I met when out campaigning.

Lions Clubs International Is Celebrating It’s Centenary In 2017 Lions Clubs International is celebrating it’s Centenary in 2017, and as the Lion Year starts in June, Lions Clubs around the world are undertaking various projects to celebrate this event. Shepshed Lions Club is no exception to this, and is being supported by Shepshed Town Council, by planting a flowerbed that represents the Lions Clubs International logo in Glenmore Park.

A businessman named Melvin Jones, who wanted to help the poor people, in his local area, founded lions Clubs International in America.

This soon expanded to other areas and eventually to over 210 countries worldwide, with over 1.3million members.

Shepshed Lions Club is part of this organisation and is dedicated to serving the local community and has done for the last 29 years.

The Lions motto is “We Serve” and Shepshed Lions Club tries very hard to live up to this in all of the things it does.

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders had an unexpected windfall recently following a demonstration of the use of a Defibrillator and how to carry out effective CPR on patient’s who are suffering a cardiac arrest. The presentation took place at Hall Lane Methodist Church at Coalville. Following the demonstration a cheque for £250 was donated to the CFR team. Coordinator of the scheme, Bob Lilley from Shepshed Lions Club CFR said, “This donation is fantastic and the money will be put to good use by the team to buy new equipment to enable us to treat our patients to the highest standards. It is very much appreciated.”

Shepshed Lions Club 7th Annual Charity Carnival The organising committee of the Shepshed Lions Club has been very busy putting this year’s event together to ensure that members of the public can enjoy a fantastic day out. All of the arena acts have been booked and a great line up has been put together. This year’s arena acts include “Big & Little” horse display, “K9 Freestyle Dog Dancing Display”, a strong man act “The Mighty Smith” and other attractions and displays.

As a result of the vote we also now have a new Prime Minister, Theresa May and I am sure she will do an excellent job in negotiating a Brexit deal and also focusing on wider political issues which need to be addressed.

I am disappointed not to be continuing as Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities. They were roles I loved doing and I wish my successor the best of luck. However, life without weekend red boxes and more time to spend with my family and locally has many attractions.

Get Active This Summer With Events In Charnwood From Monday, July 18 until Friday, August 26 Charnwood Borough Council will hold a series of activities that aim to help keep children active during the holidays.

This year there are more on offer than ever with new sessions including street cricket and horse trekking. A number of the events are free.

Councillor Jonathan Morgan, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “It’s great to see even more activities on offer for the summer.

We're committed to helping our residents' live healthy lifestyles and these events mean kids can stay active during school holidays."

Most of the activities are suitable for children of all ages and families are welcome to come and watch and take part in a number of events.

You may have read locally that the NHS is proposing that University Hospitals of Leicester should stop doing children’s heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital. This sudden announcement which is being blamed on Leicester not performing enough operations and therefore not meeting new clinical standards is a real blow and a huge surprise. We know that the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre is excellent and the ECMO service which operates there is world-leading.

I have already met, with other Leicestershire MPs, the Health Secretary and those responsible in the NHS for these decisions. I have also spoken to those at the top of the Hospital management.

I shall continue to work with them and my fellow MPs to challenge the decision and the assumptions being made. If you would like more information please e-mail me.

Finally I was pleased to see that Shepshed High School and Hind Leys College have now started a pre-consultation process on the amalgamation of the two schools.

I welcome these plans which I think will result in even stronger secondary education locally.

“Save Glenfield Children’s Hospital”

Many of you will be aware of the impending closure of the children’s hospital at Glenfield.

Several Leicestershire and City MP’s have meet with Jeremy Hunt about the decision.

By 2020 they expect their budget to be around £16.5 million. In order to meet this new budget they will need to provide services in a different way in future. 'ManCraft' Comes To Charnwood Arts Introducing ManCraft - a new textile craft group for men based at Charnwood Arts in Loughborough. ManCraft is a group especially for men (18+) to try their hand at textile crafts, such as sewing, cross stitch, knitting, crochet, embroidery, free-machine embroidery and weaving. The group also provides a space for men to socialise, meet new people, learn new skills and essentially improve their wellbeing.

ManCraft is a collaborative project between Charnwood Arts and Loughborough University PhD researcher Sarah Green. The group begins on Tuesday 2nd August between 4.00pm and 6.00pm and will then meet every week at the Charnwood Arts ArtsHouse at 29 Granby Street in Loughborough.

Charnwood Local Plan – Regulation 18 Consultation

The group is designed as part of Sarah’s research into the wellbeing benefits of the textile crafts. The main aim of the research is to discover whether practicing textile crafts are able to provide men with a tool they can use to improve mental wellbeing.

Past participants have described textile work as "Like drawing with a needle."

"This ‘Zoning out’ can help individuals gain distance from problem. It can help with focus, prevent negative thought processes and can even help with social anxiety as the activity creates a kind of safety barrier.

Current members of the group have already felt the benefits of the crafts, which some have called even more relaxing than painting."

ManCraft is an additional group that compliments the current Charnwood Arts craft group, MakeSpace. MakeSpace is an open group for anyone- male or female - with an interest in crafting and takes place every Wednesday between 1.00pm and 3.00pm, again at the Charnwood Arts ArtsHouse, Granby Street, Loughborough, LE11 3DU.

Sarah said "The therapeutic nature of working with textiles lies in the actions we perform when we do them. The repetition of the actions makes the movement as automatic as walking or breathing - things we do without having to consciously think about them. These simple, yet rhythmic and automatic movements can lead to a deep sense of calm, often followed by a meditative-like state referred to as ‘zoning out’ or being ‘in the zone’."

Members of the ManCraft group will also have the opportunity to get involved in making work for themselves, friends, family, and even for exhibition in the local community. If they wish, they can also contribute (through discussion) to the PhD research itself. All contributions to the will remain completely anonymous and participants can still take part in the group without being involved in the research.
