St Botolph's CoE Primary School - Outstanding SIAMS (Church) Inspection On Wednesday 9th March, St Botolph’s Church of England Primary School received their Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).

The National SIAMS framework is used in all inspections of Church of England schools. The principal objective of the SIAMS inspection is to evaluate the distinctiveness and effectiveness of the school as a Church school. Following the inspection the school were graded as outstanding in all areas. The report highlighted 4 particular points:

A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is to be made for the following location: Footpath L11 between Brick Kiln Lane to Jolly Farmers Lane Shepshed. (See attached plan). The purpose of the TTRO is to facilitate Bloor Homes with public safety during construction of a new housing development. The TTRO will incorporate a temporary footpath closure.

Whilst the TTRO is physically in place the diversion route will be via – Brick Kiln Lane, Ashby Road West,Iveshead Road Shepshed and vice versa.

The duration of the TTRO is for a period not exceeding 18 months commencing on the 1st May 2016. The actual duration of the restriction is anticipated to be for the full 18 month period within the aforementioned duration.

A Press Release will be issued to confirm these details approximately 2 weeks prior to the works commencing.

Question Time For Dishley Grange Patients An evening of Questions and Answers about issues of interest to patients of the Dishley Grange Medical Practice is planned for Wednesday 20th April at Gorse Covert Community Centre, Loughborough starting at 7.00pm.

The Patients’ Group has drawn together an expert panel to address issues that are of interest and concern to patients.

Presentations on how local GPs will be working closer together to provide certain services and on the Patients’ Group’s awardwinning Health Walks programme will also feature.

Jerry Bullock, the Group’s Chair, has commented “this is a terrific opportunity for the Practice’s patients to hear about what is happening locally and to ask questions”.

The event will form part of the Patients’ Group’s AGM and all patients of the Dishley Grange Medical Practice are welcome to attend. Further information about the meeting and the Group is available from the two surgeries (Maxwell Drive and Cross Street, Hathern) and on the Practice’s website.

"Chummy Nights" At Shepshed Town Bowls Club Shepshed Town Bowls Club will be hosting a series of "Chummy Nights" at their ground over the summer and would welcome anyone interested in "having a go". There will be coaching for anyone new to bowling and informal games for those who already know the ropes, followed by refreshments. Shepshed WI Celebrates 30 Years Members of Shepshed WI celebrated their 30 years by sharing a birthday cake at their March meeting together with Margaret Marshall, one of the founder members. The speaker for the evening was Anna Stasinska who runs the Old Brickyard Tea Garden at Scalford, Melton Mowbray where she serves speciality teas and runs tea tasting workshops. Following here talk on the art of tea each member was able to do some tea tasting and everyone was surprised to find there is a lot more to tea than the humble tea bag.

Shepshed History Society On Tuesday the 8th March the Shepshed History Society met at their usual venue, The Glenmore Centre to hear a talk given by Mrs Kate Ward on the History of the Walled Garden. In her illustrated talk the structure and working layout of such fascinating gardens was described in great detail.

These gardens of course came into favour with the landed gentry when Britain had hundreds of stately homes many, many years ago. One of the most fascinating aspects of the talk was the description of the work carried out by the gardeners employed by these aristocratic families. Indeed even here there was a definite hierarchy from the crock-boy who washed and cleaned the plant pots and did menial jobs, to the more experienced journeyman who worked in different areas of the garden, from the hothouses to the vegetable plots and herbaceous borders. PACT Meeting Please be informed the next PACT meeting will be held on: Thursday 14th April 2016, being held at the Shepshed High School in the Persse room, commences 18:30 hours. one answerable to his Lord and Master.

Even the walls themselves had a story to relate, many of which were unusual shapes some going by the name of crinkle crankle, and serpent and inside many of them would be furnaces to warm the walls up for fruit trees and other exotic plants and in some cases the chimneys on top of these walls masqueraded as ornamental plant urns. When first built the owners would have to pay a substantial tax on them going on how many bricks were used, hence some walls had larger bricks than expected and even stone was used to cut down on the bricks.

To compliment the talk slides of many fabulous walled gardens were shown and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the talk.

The April meeting on April 12th will be given by Mr Mel Gould who will be speaking about the Loughborough Carillon and the meeting will be open to new members and visitors.

Craft Market At Shepshed, A New Venture At St Botolph’s A huge array of crafts are to be displayed in St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed, on Saturday 9th April from 10.00am until 3.00pm. St Botolph’s has been re-ordered and provides not only a very pleasant, inspiring place of worship, but also a venue with space for other uses. This is the first time a craft market has been held there. Beautifully crafted items will be displayed in a beautiful setting.

Stall holders will be there from a wide area with a tremendous variety of goods on view.

Original art in several different media, handmade jewellery, garden ornaments, woodturning, glassware, cakes, and needlecrafts, to name but a few!

You can even bring your jewellery to be cleaned for a small fee, please do so.

Refreshments will be served all day, with drinks and lunches available. Car parking is free and entrance to the Market is just £1, with proceeds for the work of the Church in Shepshed. St Botolph’s is a busy, lively Church deserving maximum support.

New Bingo Caller & Members Needed!

In Charnwood Road Community Centre on a Monday afternoon between 2 pm and 3.30 pm a group for older people to come along have a cup of tea and biscuit and play Bingo and socialise, however, over the years the number of members has dwindled.

Also, the current Bingo Caller will be leaving shortly, therefore, a replacement will be needed.

The Group’s aim is to benefit those young people who struggle with the conventional youth group environment or don't really fit in with, or want to fit in with other groups and clubs.

The members of Shepshed and District Club have had a busy few weeks which included several practical evenings and talks at the usual venue, Shepshed Council Offices, plus the annual 3-way Image Matching battle at Coalville and the second competition league round of the year.

This time the league competition was judged by Stuart Hewins, DPAGB, who, after commenting on each entry gave the following awards; Prints: Subject ‘Painting 1st. Sue Hutton, LRPS “Opehlia In Autumn” 2nd. Alan Blood 3rd. Pete Richardson Highly Commended: Alan Harris, Malcolm Diaper

Alan Harris Highly Commended: Brian Walbey, Garry Rennocks and Sue Hutton, LRPS At Coalville the members joined with the Ashby and Coalville clubs for the usual 3-way contest, this year judged by Peter Cheetham, APAGB, a judge familiar to all three clubs, and after much consideration and the usual banter and input from the audience, this being a lighthearted competition, the winners were Ashby with 77 points followed by Shepshed with 75 and Coalville with 57.

The Club now takes a break for the Easter holiday before returning for a talk entitled ‘Land of Ice and Fire’ by Club member Sue Hutton, LRPS.

Shepshed RFC Launch New Junior Section Shepshed RFC launched it's new junior section on Sunday 6th March with the first session deemed a resounding success Just in time for Mother's Day, Shepshed RFC were able to provide a welcome break to some mums in the local area with the launch of our new junior section.

Over the past few month, a number of club members have been volunteering to put the necessary resources in place to provide a fun and safe environment for local children to enjoy the game of Rugby. We have been raising the profile of the new venture and we were finally able to run our first session.

We had over 30 children join us for our first session with kids

taking on classic games such as Bulldog, Stuck in the mud, piggy in the middle, eggs in the nest with a Rugby twist as well as a special obstacle course.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and we will be looking to improve the sessions over the coming weeks. In the near future we hope to offer more for both the children and parents to get involved with the club.

We would like to thank all of those that joined us for our first session and we hope that this is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the club.

We would also like place on record special thanks to Lee Ralph, Donna Ralph, Nick Farmer, Shane Fox and all the other volunteers that have worked so hard to get this up and running.

Session will now be running every Sunday from 10am until 11am.

Sessions will be just £2 per week as well as a small membership fee as of July/August 2016

We often neglect our front gardens as we spend so little time in them, choosing to relax and entertain in the privacy of our back gardens. However as we use them numerous times a day when we leave and return to our home, with a little effort a neat, tidy and uncluttered front garden can be a very welcome site at the end on a hard day at work. The way we present our front garden also sets the tone for our home. Unlike our secluded rear gardens the space at the front of our property is on show to all of those who pass by, our visitors, our neighbours and even the postie! The key is to have a good backbone of evergreen and structural shrubs to provide interest throughout the year. All of these work well planted through gravel with an underlying membrane so they can be used in conjunction with hardstanding for vehicles.

For those with space, a tree can offer screening from the neighbours and from road noise, but choose wisely. Avoid large vigorous trees which can get out of hand and cause problems with drainage and building foundations. Instead opt for dwarf or naturally small growing trees like Flowering Cherries, Crab Apples, ornamental Hawthorns or Amelanchier.

As I write, our region of the country has suffered a deluge of rain, flooding huge areas of countryside, villages and towns and major flooding events are hit the news headlines frequently.

Laying two parallel lines of paving stones in line with the car wheels can be sufficient for vehicular access whilst allowing the opportunity for low ground cover planting to weave amongst adding colour and interest and allowing water uptake by the plants. Channel drains work well to remove surface runoff, feeding water into sub-surface pipework or into soakaways.

Confronting Dementia It can be difficult being diagnosed or having a loved one diagnosed with dementia but as a lady living with dementia keeps telling us, “You’ve just got to get on with what you are dealt with in life”. You can still continue to have lots of laughs, make new friends and learn more about one another whilst living with dementia. Isn’t that what life is all about? Dementia describes a range of diseases to the brain. The most common disease is Alzheimer’s, followed by vascular dementia. However, it can be caused by other diseases such as Parkinson’s. Memory loss and confusion are the most well-known symptoms but a wide range of other symptoms can also exist. These include mood and behaviour changes and difficulties in concentrating, communicating and reasoning.

No two people will have the same experience and different people encounter symptoms in different ways. In many ways dementia can take the brakes off somebody’s underlying personality traits; you can really get to know your nearest and dearest! A person with dementia seldom lies, and if you are honest they often just say what we are thinking, which can be both refreshing if not sometimes embarrassing.

your loved one with dementia again and don’t be afraid to try a range of new things and enlist the help of dementia Mind for You experts. Just remember each person is different, one size does not fit all and family and friends don’t always know best. New people can often introduce enjoyable activities. Many people find fantastic new friends through social activities or befriending.

Living with dementia does not mean you can’t be introduced to new people and things and embrace new experiences.

If you would like to know more about dementia you can become a dementia friend or go on an awareness course. The different types of support available in your area can be found by contacting your local Alzheimer’s society, your carers champion linked to your GP, speaking about dementia in your local community or speaking to us. Just remember to talk to one another, get to know dementia, understand the local support available and enlist the help of people experienced with dementia. Dementia does not need to be something to shy away from; together we can confront this disease and its symptoms and continue to create happy memories both now and in the future.

CHRISTINE RADFORD As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc.

Street Lighting

County are starting replacing the street lighting in Shepshed with the new style LED lighting from the beginning of March.

The new technology is being installed in 968 street lights.

This technology will help to save thousands of pounds in energy bills and reduce our carbon foot print.

The new lights will be controlled centrally, with the ability for them to be switched back on temporally during the evening to help the emergency services at incident scenes.

When the new LED lights are installed it takes a couple of days for the control system to register them so they operate all night at 100% brightness initially.

Once they are on the system they will pick up the part-night programme and begin switching off at midnight. In addition to this they will be dimmed down to 75% brightness during the burning hours.

The closure of the footpath between Jolly Farmers Lane and Brick Kiln Lane will be closed for a period not exceeding 18 months commencing the 1st May 2016 to

facilitate Bloor Homes during their construction of their new housing development.

Street Parties to Celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday

The County Council will be offering free road closure applications for street parties held to mark The Queen’s 90th Birthday. I ask that communities get in touch as soon as possible so the arrangements can be put in place.

It is understood the process takes 6 weeks in total so it is important to get applications in early..

Your Borough Councillors can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours and planning issues.

Planning Appeal Rear of 62 Iveshead Road

The decision has been issued for the above appeal and has been granted for the erection of up to 77 dwellings following the demolition of 62 Iveshead Road.

Following the result of this appeal, your Borough Councillors have had a meeting with the planning officers at Charnwood expressing our concerns and asking what the implications are for other sites in and around Shepshed and how best we can approach any future planning applications. We were of the opinion that following the adoption of the Core Strategy, Shepshed would be safe from further housing developments but this appears not to be the case.

Her Majesty The Queen 90th Birthday celebration – Thursday 21st April.

The event is due to start at 6.45pm and the beacon will be lit by a special guest at 7.30pm. The park will be dressed to celebrate in the traditional colours of red, white and blue and CBC will be providing entertainment and refreshments will be available for an evening of family celebration.

We shall continue to have our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am.
