Ratby Parish Council HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – Beacon Article by Linda Fogg

The Parish Council again lit a commemorative Beacon to celebrate HM The Queen’s 70 year reign. The beacon, which was mounted on the Parish Church tower, was lit at 9.45pm and 7 other beacons were visible from this vantage point. The beacon was lit for the Diamond Jubilee and Council would like to thank the Parish Church for once again giving permission for the beacon to be sited on the tower. In the past the Council has organised a Fete to celebrate the Sovereign’s other Jubilees but due to the cessation of various local groups in the village and the fact that there was no real suitable venue for such an event, it was not possible.

“As the cost-of-living crisis deepens, they are becoming even more important places, providing good quality items at a fraction of the price.” As the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us, shopping locally and supporting those in our local neighbourhood, is so important. Helen added: “shopping in this way provides a dual benefit, the consumer is able to purchase goods at a reasonable price and the charity is able to raise additional funds, to continue providing much needed services and support in the local community.” If you live in Markfield or the surrounding areas, why not pop in and support Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation by shopping in their onsite charity shops at Ulverscroft Grange, Whitwick Road, Ulverscroft, Leicestershire, LE67 9QB. Open from Monday-Saturday 10-4pm, they would be delighted for your support. For more information, about the work of the Foundation, the charity shops or becoming a volunteer please visit their website https:// shuttlewood-clarke.org/ , call 01530 244914 or email hello@shuttlewood-clarke.org

Leicester Forest East Parish Council

Protecting Your Family Inheritance

Article by Holly Mann

Article by Klara Dixon

Queens Platinum Jubilee The Parish Council have ordered a new bench to be located in Forest East Park as a permanent way to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years as Queen.

Our frontline staff follow Government guidelines for visiting you in your home and they are fully vaccinated. LevLaw Ltd remains here for you. Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT).

Additionally, the planters around Leicester Forest East have recently been planted out in red, white and blue to mark the Jubilee. Wildflower Garden Work has begun on transforming a small area of Forest East Park into a Wildflower Garden. Four WW1/WW2 remembrance benches will be installed, along with two Royal British legion ‘Tommy’ planters and a path linking them together. The area has already been grass seeded and two circular beds of wildflowers will be planted soon. The garden will become a peaceful place to sit and relax and it will also increase the numbers of bees and insects in the area, helping towards increased biodiversity. Visit with Vista’s CEO Two Parish Council members recently attended a site visit with the CEO of Vista to discuss plans for the transformation of the site. The Parish Council is pleased with the plans, including a new gym which will be open to the public. Although 42 trees will be cut down during building works 72 will be planted to replace them.

A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children’s inheritance is protected. This last point can be particular interest to couples who have come together and have children with different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensuring that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property, they can still sell the property and the proceeds to be used to purchase a new property, the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Birstall And District Art Society Article by Meg Grant

Birstall and District Art Society (BADAS) have the following forthcoming demonstration events. 14 June 2022 – Tas Severis – a coastal scene in acrylic using a palette knife 13 September 2022 – Deborah Bird – inspirational watercolour 11 October 2022 – Rebecca Ivatts – dramatic figure, from a live model, using acrylic 8 November 2022 – Vicki Norman – a closer look at clouds and sky, in oils

Boulders The wooden bollards at the entrance to the playing fields were rotten so they have recently been replaced with boulders which look much smarter and are intended to be a permanent feature requiring little to no maintenance going forward. Grant Policy The Parish Council's Community Grants Scheme opened this month. Applications from community groups, for a specific project are welcomed. All demonstrations take place at the Palmer-Tomkinson Centre, Cedars Academy from 7 -9pm. Visitors are welcome at a cost of £4.00. Members recently marked the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by doing a series of pictures taking the Queen’s reign as inspiration. About 35 members took part in the project, some contributing more than one picture. We are delighted that so many members wanted to join in. The majority are currently displayed as a montage in the window of Sapphire Kitchen in Birstall where they can be enjoyed by anyone passing by. * It is the Society’s way of marking the event and giving back to the community, whilst promoting the group. All pictures relating to the project, including those that it was not possible to include in the montage, will be on show in the BADAS annual exhibition in November. BADAS is a friendly group and there are currently some membership vacancies. As well as the monthly demonstration evenings, there are Friday morning painting sessions and an opportunity to sign up for Monday classes. The Society also runs trips, plein air sketching sessions and social events. As a member, you can also participate in the annual exhibition. If you are interested in joining, why not go along to one of the demonstration evenings? You can find more details on the website: www.BADAS.uk and leaflets are available in Sapphire Kitchen.

Kirby Muxloe Scarecrow Trail

Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September Thinking Of Making A Scarecrow? Now its time to think about making a scarecrow for September. The theme is “Once Upon a Time” - scarecrows based on or inspired by a children’s book character. There are so many to choose from! To enter: Pick up an entry form from Kirby Library, AA Moores, The Royal Oak or Thompsons Newsagents and return to The Library by JULY 12th. You will also be able to book online (Details will be posted). Decide on a character to make: It doesn’t have to be complicated or ambitious – just join in the fun and make the weekend in September one to remember. It also doesn’t have to be an expensive project. Re-use materials you have at home, especially old clothes. Straw (if you would like some – there are other fillings) will be available at The Royal Oak on a date to be determined. Watch this space. Join in with family and friends: Don’t feel that this is an activity you need to do on your own. Ask your friends to help and maybe make it a group effort. The main thing is to have a bit of fun and put a smile on people’s faces. Please tell your friends: Please tell people about our Scarecrow Trail. Often the best publicity is by word of mouth and we want the weekend to be as spectacular as it can be!

Jubilee Celebrations Kirby Muxloe WI Article by Lynne Lewis

Kirby Muxloe WI celebrated our Queens Platinum Jubilee on Thursday 2nd June 2022,it was very well attended by 47 members and a very special guest Olive Ford who we helped celebrate her 100th Birthday. The party was held in a members glorious garden and was an ideal setting for such a wonderful day. A Special Afternoon Tea was enjoyed plus a slice of Celebration Cake along with a glass of Proseco .A big thankyou goes to all who helped in making this event possible and such a special day , from the "Mr Shifters" who delivered and return all the tables and chairs, the kitchen ladies who provided all the food, laid the table and of courses not forgetting the "clearer uppers". It was a marvellous afternoon, the sun shone and we were also entertained from our very own Bell Ringers.

Ratby Community Library And Crow Pie Cafe Article by Joan Burton

7.30 pm. Rosie is also one of our Wriggly Readers leaders. Pre-schoolers and their parents/carers meet every Thursday morning from 10.30 – 12 for stories and songs followed by playtime. It's closed to the wider public, thus ensuring a dedicated environment for the children. Does your child attend Saturday morning activities? Why not wait in our cafe area with a cup of early morning coffee? It's a bit less rushed and wearing than filling in an hour in between drop off and pick up and parking is free! The cafe is the main source of income for the library : it has made over £3,000 in the last year but that can't cover all our bills so do call in, enjoy your visit and help keep the library open. The cafe is open every session for delicious coffee and teas, cakes and savoury snacks at very fair prices. We're recruiting. Volunteers Needed to Support Each Opening Session Just one a week makes a difference! The more volunteers we have, the more we can provide to our community. It's what we're here for.

Did you enjoy the Queen's Jubilee? We at the library put out our bunting, put up our displays and thoroughly enjoyed our special event. Fish and Chip Supper and a Right Royal Quiz. Friday 3rd June 7.30p.m. Quizmaster Steve Roche welcomed a jubilee crowd to a special evening full of food, fun and fascinating facts. Our supper was well received by the hungry quizzers and thanks go to Ratby Fish and Chip shop for supplying it. It's good to support local businesses. Thank You Last month the trustees and volunteers of Ratby Library and Community group expressed their sincere thanks and appreciation to the widow of the late William (Bill) Sinclare, for passing on his bequest of £200 to the library. Jo has gifted another £50 to us which has been gratefully received. It was a lovely gesture and will be put to good use. Again, condolences to Jo and a warm invitation to come in for a cuppa and a chat at any time. Bradgate Rotary Club have kept in touch with us and are actively assisting us with planning events and publicity. This organization does a huge amount of charity work nationally and we are delighted to be in touch with them and working on a range of ideas . Thanks also go to our Duke of Edinburgh Award students, Iain and Isaac. After six months Isaac has completed his community service but Iain is with us for several months more. Both have done sterling work over their time with us but it must be said, whilst putting up our Jubilee bunting outside, the two 5'5” female volunteers found the 6' Iain an absolute star! We are awaiting the result of our National lottery bid. Fingers crossed... Kathryn's Art Club. This is a weekly evening event from 7.30 – 9 p.m. Costing only £6, including all materials, future activities include lino printing, watercolour, acrylic painting and pompom making. It's a lovely atmosphere and very popular. Krafty Corner crafters are still meeting on the first Tuesday of the month from 10.30 until 12. There's a lot of art in Ratby. Who knows who they think they are? Martin Fretter, a local expert is ready to set up a group where a first social occasion would be 'for individuals to talk... about where they are at in their research and any problems they may have encountered' leading on to planning for further meetings covering, for example, 'useful record resources, how to use them and any pitfalls to avoid'. Martin was in the library on 28th April but visitors were a little thin. If you missed him, please come into the library and we will forward your details in order to set up more meetings. Rosie Robinson's Book Club is up and running. Book discussion, pamper gift and a really super atmosphere create a warm welcome to the session. The next meeting is Thursday June 9th June at

A Poem From The Village Writers CHECKUP by Chris Whitby I am OK. No, really, life’s a blast, if that’s what you still say these days. It’s true I do forget some things. The distant past

Article by Liz Collinson Summertime, and the living is easy, or so George Gershwin sang. We hope that’s how you feel – if not easy, perhaps easier than other times of the year? It feels so good to have the sun on your skin, flowers blooming, people smiling, even against the dark backdrop of so much that is currently happening. THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE Summer brings with it the Summer Reading Challenge. This scheme is organised by the Reading Agency in partnership with Public Libraries, and the theme this year is ‘Gadgeteers’. The Reading Agency has been working with the Science Museum Group to inspire children across the country by focussing on science and innovation. It is hoped that this will inspire children to use their imagination and creativity by featuring amazing books, awesome rewards and plenty of ideas for cool experiments and activities to discover the science that is in everything around us. As you know, the Library takes part in this challenge every year. We will be launching it on Saturday 9th July. Drop in and find out how to take part. There are rewards for everyone as they progress through the challenge, and we hope that children will be inspired to carry on with their reading, have their curiosity sparked about the world around them and discover the fascination of understanding how things work. RECEPTION FOR VOLUNTEERS We had a lovely reception for our band of volunteers on 20th May, with a cheese and wine party to thank them for all their efforts over the past two years. It is worth reiterating that we would not have a Library without them. There is no monetary reward for volunteers or Trustees. They are motivated purely by a desire to help with the development and cohesion of our community, and many have formed a network of new friendships, together with a sense of worth and giving back to others. It cannot be said often enough how grateful we all should be that so many are prepared to give their time and effort in this way. The tasks volunteers undertake are not only to do with checking out and receiving books. We keep the entire building going, with activities ranging from cleaning (including the loo!), dusting, washing up, gardening, to helping with fund-raising, publicity, cooking, serving refreshments, washing up, buying in supplies, and so on and so on. One way or another, whatever needs to be done gets done. We are a band of some 40-50 people. If you want to join us, you are most welcome – just drop in and talk to us about what is involved and what you would like to do. You will receive a very warm reception! LOST PROPERTY We are amazed by the number of items people simply forget to take away with them – particularly water bottles, but including coats, glasses, and items of children’s’ clothing. We keep all these safely for months at a time, but we shall put any unclaimed items up for sale at our next book sale. So if you have lost anything, let us know and have a look through what we have got. Occasionally, people make photocopies of really important documents, such as marriage certificates, and leave the original behind in the copier! We keep these safely, so if you have lost a significant document, come in and let us know. We usually do not know who has left the item, so if it is an important official document, we will require proof of identity. EVENTS It seems that life is getting back to normal, with people feeling more confident about mixing with others. We feel therefore that it is time for us to resume the activities that we got used to running pre-Covid, such as fish’n’chips quiz nights, N’Uke gigs and perhaps another Down to Earth – all very popular and enjoyable events. If you have any suggestions as to other things you would like us to mount, let us know and we will see what we can do. Meanwhile, watch this space. AND FINALLY……….. JUNE COFFEE, CAKE AND CHILDREN’S CRAFT MORNING THIS WILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY JUNE 25TH 2022 FROM 10.00 – 1.00 AT THE LIBRARY DO JOIN US AND BRING YOUR FRIENDS!

is clear as I could wish. It’s just what’s new, what happened yesterday, last week, that’s where I come adrift, but is that any more than simple ageing, all the wear and tear of burning candles at both ends? I’m sure it’s nothing. Though there is... one tiny doubt. You see, it’s when I wake I don’t recall, some days, my leaving such a mess, clothes out, the window open, marks along the wall. And in my mouth a little blood. All fine, but here’s the thing. It doesn’t taste like mine.

The Village Writers MONOLOGUE by Cherryl Reid That’s the third time this week I’ve had to switch the radio off! And it’s only Tuesday! Yes, yes, I know we all have to switch the radio off – when we leave the house or go to bed – that’s not the sort of ‘switching off’ I mean! I have to switch off because I cannot stand to listen for a moment longer! I just get so frustrated and angry about the effusive language that some presenters use. Everything is ‘fantastic’/’marvellous’/’wonderful’/’incredible’. Really? Is everything that they encounter that good? Does that particular presenter actually love everyone she talks about, as she says? Is every piece of music her favourite? Phew! Well, I’ve got that off my chest. I am feeling a bit calmer now I’ve put it out there. Calm enough to analyse why I become Mrs Angry at the over-use of superlatives. Well…I’ve given it some thought. I think it stems from envy. Not everyone I encounter is wonderful. Some are not even nice! Take the driver who tail-gates me dangerously because I won’t exceed the speed-limit. (No! Don’t! I feel another rant coming on! Don’t let’s go there!) Breathe! Well, Mrs Angry, you are wrong! Everyone you encounter is wonderful! You may not like them but think about it – how did they come into being? That is a miracle in itself. And to grow into adulthood, survive all the pitfalls. Some survive better than others, of course. There is a theory about that but I’m not going to bother researching. I am going to try to appreciate and enjoy the miracle that makes us human. I am going to do my best to value my fellow human. Can I do it? I’ll give it a try… … though I may need to switch to a different radio station.

'The Village Writers' Who meet via Zoom on the first and third Wednesday of the month. Anyone interested in joining this group (Or just watching a meeting to get the flavour) should contact David on 01162393380 or email aschons98@gmail.com

Wenlo RDA Riders To Represent Region At National Championships Article by Claire Maden

Horses and riders from Wenlo Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Group will represent the North Midlands region in Dressage at RDA's National Championships after qualifying at their first "in-person" competition in over 2 years. Twelve riders from Wenlo, based in Normanton-on-Soar, competed in the Regional Dressage Qualifier which took place on Monday 9 May at Scropton RDA Centre in Derbyshire. Five of Wenlo's riders came first in their respective classes, with two seconds, four thirds and one fourth place. Wenlo's Erin Bowles, who was First in Grade 7 Walk & Trot - Junior, also recorded the highest overall score of the day by a junior rider, with 72.4%. Erin is one of seven Wenlo riders who have qualified to compete in the Nationals, which will take place at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire in July. The other Wenlo qualifiers are: Georgia Mackay (1st, Intro to Dressage Walk - Senior); Olivia Langley (2nd, Grade 6 Walk - Senior); Isobelle Hardy (1st, PVI/TVI Walk - Senior); Emma Stone (2nd, Intro to Dressage Walk & Trot - Senior); Tara Redfern (1st, Grade 6 Walk & Trot - Senior); and Hannah Hardy-Smith (1st, Grade 6 Walk, Trot & Canter - Junior).

We are delighted that so many of our horses and riders will be making the trip to Gloucestershire in July, but this will be a very complex and expensive operation for a small charity, and we would be extremely grateful for any support to help us get Team Wenlo to the Nationals. Leicester Forest East Community Library Article by Paul Turner

June is Quiz month The library is organising a couple of quizzes in June. The first is a ticketed quiz to be held at the Library on June 24th. It is presented by Babs Mason with a raffle and Cheese and Biscuits served during the interval. It’s a 7:00pm for 7.30pm start and costs £6.50 per person. From all accounts it will be an exciting evening. Please call in at the library or use the QR code below. On a more sedate note, we have our summer paper quiz which costs £1 with a chance to win a £25 gift voucher. It’s a pick-up and do at those slow moments over the summer with 3 sections including one on Royalty. We already know that some of the quizzes have gone as far as Lutterworth and Australia so if you do yours in a faraway or unusual place we would like to know. The closing date is 30th July. If you want a copy of the quiz then please call in at the library or request one via the QR code below. All these events will help raise funds for the library. As we are losing out grants from Leicestershire County Council due to Government funding next year these events are vital to keep the library open.

Local Training Course Provider Hires New Business Development Manager By Scarlet Lewitt

Meduc8ion, a training course provider and business division of Hear4U & Healthscreen Ltd, are pleased to announce their recent hire of Priya Tank as Business Development Manager. Priya will be spending half of her time in the clinics at Hear4U, and the other delivering and developing training courses from the Meduc8ion headquarters, based in Hinckley, Leicestershire. As an accomplished audiologist with more than 7 years in the field, Priya will also become the lead trainer of Meduc8ion’s Earwax Removal and Ear Anatomy & Otoscopy courses. “I have always had an interest in teaching and mentoring but I didn’t want to stop being an audiologist”, Priya said. “This is why this role is ideal because it allows me to combine my love for teaching and my love for audiology, and to interchange between the clinical and business side of hearing healthcare. I have so many ideas for the future of Meduc8ion, and I am so excited to see where this new challenge will take me”, she continues. Priya comes to Meduc8ion with a strong background in audiology. She acquired her BSc (Hons) in Audiology from the University of Manchester and has spent several years both advising and assisting patients in need of hearing healthcare in the private sector. “I grew up with my aunt who was hard of hearing, so hearing loss is something that has always resonated closely with me”, she remarks, “I even spent some time shadowing at Leicester Royal Infirmary before deciding to undertake a degree in audiology”. She has a myriad of experience both in clinic, and as a mobile audiologist delivering audiologist services to hard of hearing patients across the Midlands. Meduc8ion was established as a training course provider in early 2021, and their entire range of courses had sold out by the end of the year. They offer courses in Occupational Health, Drug & Alcohol Testing, alongside Earwax Removal and Otoscopy, and are looking implement Hearing Care Assistant and Mental Health Awareness courses in the near future. To find out more about Meduc8ion, head to their main website at https:// meduc8ion.co.uk today.

District Releases Positive Air Quality Report Article by Ian Cockerill Encouraging figures from the monitoring of air quality in Blaby District throughout 2021 have shown no significant levels of concern in nitrogen dioxide across major road networks. In its Air Quality Annual Status Report to DEFRA, Blaby District Council has revealed that the five ‘Air Quality Management Areas’ (AQMAs) have not returned to the higher pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2018 and 2019. Air Quality Management Areas are declared when levels of nitrogen dioxide exceed the national limit of 40 micrograms per cubic meter air (known as μg/m3). No AQMAs have exceeded the national limit since 2018, and the latest figures have all been measured well below 40μg/m3. The Covid-19 pandemic saw an improvement in air quality across the country as national lockdowns saw empty roads. This included a hugely positive impact on the district’s air quality, particularly in the five AQMAs. Despite the return of large volumes of vehicles in 2021 as normality returned, air quality has remained below national objectives. Mill Hill in Enderby has previously had one of the highest levels of monitored nitrogen dioxide in the district. The elevated levels have reduced from their 2018 high of 47μg/m3 to 29μg/m3 in the most recent 2021 measurements. Other AQMAs include the M1 corridor between Leicester Forest East and Thorpe Astley, which recorded a high of 27μg/m3 at a monitoring point on Hinckley Road, a huge reduction from the 2018 peak of 47μg/m3. Measurements recorded at Enderby Road in Whetstone in 2021 were lower than in 2020, at 19μg/m3.

Lionel's Big Picnic Article by Loros

The M1 corridor between Enderby and Narborough has remained at an acceptable level of air quality, down to 24μg/m3. Levels also remain low at the A5460 Narborough Road South, measuring 20μg/m3, in trend with the previous three years.

This summer, we’re looking for schools, nurseries, youth groups and clubs to join Lionel the LOROS Lion and host their very own teddy bears’ picnic.

Whilst the AQMAs have seen a significant reduction since 2019, Blaby District Council will be keeping all locations as designated air quality management areas to continue long-term measurement of air quality and to monitor the effect of nearby developments in line with national guidance.

Lionel the LOROS Mascot is looking for ROAR-some nurseries, Parent and toddler groups, schools and families to host a teddy bears picnic to raise vital funds for LOROS.

Blaby District Council has received more than £275,000 in grant funding to continue its positive work to tackle air quality. The new funding is targeted towards the Countdown to Clean Air Project, which will include working in schools, businesses and community groups to encourage alternative methods of travel. Councillor Les Phillimore, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Community and Environmental Services Portfolio Holder, said: “There is no doubt that the pandemic helped improve air quality in our district, including in our AQMAs. It has been encouraging to see that as life returned to normality in 2021 our numbers did not return to pre-pandemic levels. “We are not complacent and will be making sure we use this as an opportunity to do what we can to keep improving our air quality, and everyone can contribute to helping keep our air quality at these encouraging levels by walking or cycling where possible. We’re excited about the Countdown to Clean Air Project and will continue our extensive monitoring in key areas to make sure that these promising signs continue in the long-term.” The Air Quality Annual Status Report will be available in full on the Blaby District Council website in the coming weeks at www.blaby.gov.uk.

The Bridge (East Midlands): Working With Local Communities To Tackle The Escalating Homelessness Crisis

The process of becoming homeless is stressful, exhausting, and dangerous; but in many cases it is preventable. At The Bridge, we believe that everyone in our community deserves a place they can call home. Each of our early intervention, prevention, and relief services provides guidance to address the very real issues of housing and homelessness that is an escalating emergency in our local area.

Mounting energy bills, rising food prices and the lasting impact of the covid pandemic, mean that more people across the county from Charnwood to Harborough are facing the very real prospect of homelessness.

The immediate pressures of the cost-of-living crisis is being witnessed now by our frontline workers. Mary on our Young People & Families team recently met a young single mum who is reaching crisis point. “The mum was on pre-payment meters for her gas and electric, where there were mounting debts of £300. We were able to provide her with a top up of £50 from Charnwood Welfare Provision (CWP) for her power accounts”. However, the young mum returned the following week. Mary recalled: “She was crying and explained that she had no gas and electric again. On her statement, it showed most of the top up we had provided was being automatically used to pay off the debt on the meter."

Article by Alisia Heslop

At The Bridge (East Midlands), we strive to help families and individuals who find themselves in crisis by providing them with specialist housing-related support, advice and assistance. After a relationship breakdown in December 2020, Laura was suddenly kicked out of her family home and found herself homeless, which was a low point for her mental health having nowhere to turn. “When you face a problem by yourself it’s the loneliest place in the world. But you can get the help you need to overcome your problems. I never thought I could have a flat and keep it for more than 6 months. So now being in my own flat for nearly a year, I feel like I’ve won a gold at the Olympics - The Bridge has been incredible in supporting me to do this.” Laura, who received support from The Bridge Between April 2020 and March 2021, our charity received 6,202 referrals – an increase of 39% compared to the same period of 2019-2020. Thankfully, we were able to prevent or resolve homelessness for around 92% our clients – but this life changing work has only been possible because of the support and generosity of local people. The Bridge was first established as a Christmas Shelter during the 1993 festive period. It soon became clear that there was an all year round need for our services and so, in 1995, The Bridge’s first Housing Advice Centre was opened. We’ve been adapting our services to meet community need ever since; empowering individuals to build a better future – a future which includes having somewhere safe and secure to live. To achieve this aim, we offer a range of support services in the areas of Prevention and Wellbeing, Young People and Families, Street Homeless and Offenders as well as Advice and Homelessness.

“She didn't know where to turn, as she needed hot water and to use the cooker for the children's food. We were able to provide her with another top-up from CWP, although this would reach her limit of two CWP top ups a year – due to the current costs of gas and electric leading to escalating debts, this allowance was used within one week." "It was distressing to see a young mum worrying how she would be able to feed and bathe her children. This situation is equally sad as I know she is not alone in struggling with the rising costs – there are so many more families in the same situation, and it will only get worse”. The Young People & Families team will continue to ensure the mum, and many others, are accessing support to help with budgeting and ultimately aiming to prevent the family’s homelessness. But to continue offering this life changing support to those who urgently need it, we need your help. Our essential core costs just to keep our organisation running are over £500,000 each year- so we desperately rely on the support of the local community to prevent and overcome homelessness, together. We need your help now. To support in the prevention of our local homelessness crisis, contact our Community Engagement Lead Magda on 07717 467872 today. Golf Club Ukraine Appeal Raises Over £5,000 Article by Lou Preedy

Members of Rothley Park Golf Club certainly rose to the challenge when Club Chairman, Phil Watson, asked for donations for the Disaster Emergency Fund. “We were keen to highlight the terrible suffering in Ukraine following the Russian invasion, says Phil, “Ordinary people losing loved ones and their homes and millions forced to leave the country to live in refugee camps. So we put a Ukrainian flag alongside our club flag and set up a fund raising page on the internet. Club members very generously donated £5243 all of which has gone to the Disaster Emergency Fund for Ukraine. Our thoughts are with them.” It was wonderful to see golfers of all ages, young and old, contributing to the cause, illustrated by the photo taken on the club terrace as golfers came in from the course.

Our next meeting in St Bart’s Church Hall with be on Tuesday 20th September with speaker David Ray talking about William Morris and England’s Silk Road. Mike Gould, our Chair for the last ten years, has decided to step down but will still be part of the History Group committee. Thank you, Mike, for all your hard work over the years. Val and I (J.U.) became Co-chairs at the A.G. M. on May 17th. This month we welcome an article written by Val Knott, the Co-chair and Program Secretary of Kirby Muxloe Local History Group Who was Simon Pakeman? Most of us who have visited Kirby Castle will have heard of Simon Pakeman, who built the original manor house on the site before Kirby Castle was built by William, Lord Hastings in 1480, but who was he and what do we know about him? The remains of Simon’s manor house, which was a moated house approached through a gatehouse with a drawbridge, are described in the Kirby Muxloe Castle Official Guide published in 1917 by H.M. Office of Works. The building comprised of a hall and north wing, containing the principal living rooms, which were incorporated in to the new building in 1480. The guide suggests that the hall had two bays, with screens at the southwest end, which were entered through porches. The stone foundations of the buttery, pantry and passage to the kitchen can still be seen. The northeast wing plan of the old house shows two chimneys and the pit of the garderobe (medieval toilet) in between. These were incorporated into the later castle walls. These remains show that the manor house must have been an impressive building, showing the wealth and status of the Pakeman family in the 14th century. It is likely that the house was abandoned, however, by the end of the 14th century. Records tell us that the Pakeman family lived in Kirby (Kereby) from the early 13th century until 1391 and held substantial amounts of land here. Like many families of the time, they decided, with no consideration given to later historians, to give several children the name “Simon” over the generations. Here, we will refer to them as Simon (1), Simon (2) etc., with Simon (1) being the first that we know of to be given that name in the Pakeman family. The fortunes of the family changed between good and bad times but the building of this substantial manor house by Simon (1) Pakeman showed that Simon held a position of some importance in Leicestershire. Much of the land in the country in the 12th and 13th centuries was held by knights usually men of noble birth who served the king or lord as mounted soldiers in armour. Many of these knights became unable to maintain their economic status and had to mortgage or sell off much of their land to the monasteries or to the increasing number of “gentries”, who were improving their status by serving in local government. Such a man was Simon (1) Pakeman. It is believed that Simon (1) Pakeman had been born in Kirby in the early 13th century. Some years later, Simon (2) Pakeman was born in Kirby about

Map of Pakeman Place and Kirby Muxloe Castle. Area with darker lines denotes 14th century walls 1274 and died 24th March 1313. He had a son, Simon (3), who was born on 20th March 1306 in Kirby and died 9th August 1391, bringing to an end to the male line of the family. Several records mentioning the Pakeman family are held in the National Archives, describing “Inquisitions Post Mortem” which were enquiries into valuable properties in order to discover what income and rights were due to the crown and who the heir should be. For example, in 1234, it is documented that Simon (1) gave the majority of his holdings -a wood, an assart (land converted to arable land from woodland), some meadow and 3 virgates (around 90 acres of land) which was attached to a manor to Garendon Abbey. These inquisitions show that the family was often in financial difficulties. However, by the time the Pakeman family built the substantial manor house at Kirby, their status was much improved. Simon’s career marked a watershed in the family’s history. In previous years, the family had bought small pieces of land in and around Kirby, mainly woodland and meadow, from the knighted Herle family, who were absentee landlords of the area. Two other families owned land in Kirby at this time - the Levere family and the Mayel family and together with the Pakemans they had sufficient resources to lead village society in Kirby in the absence of a resident lord. This meant these families were on the verge of “gentry status”. Simon’s early life is not well documented but his increasing social status led to him becoming an M.P. in 1334. It is probable that he had legal training, helped by Sir William Herle. He fast established himself as a popular lawyer, his legal clientele being from around Kirby including the Ferrers family and Thomas Beauchamp but in 1340, Henry Earl of Lancaster, appointed him steward of Leicester Honor - an important administrative position carried out on behalf of the Earl, which he held until 1346. John of Gaunt reappointed him steward in 1362, until Simon retired in 1375 because of old age, but during this time he was influential as steward and was appointed to every peace commission and on commissions in Northamptonshire, Rutland, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Cambridgeshire. He spent much time in London and was elected M.P. in 1365 and 1368. In 1374, Simon put much of his land in trust, but when he died in 1376, he left a son who was under age. When the son died in 1391 while still a minor, the estate was divided between his daughters, both of whom were married. Katherine had married Robert Digby, the heir to a large estate in Tilton and Joan married Richard Vylers, with a family estate in Brooksby. It is clear tht Simon’s daughters’ husbands were of a higher status than Pakeman and indicates the extent to which he had expanded the family’s estate. Simon (3) Pakeman appears to have had an exceptional ability which ensured he became more than a local legal advisor, which would have been the most likely position for the son of a family such as the Pakemans. It is thought that because his rise was so rapid, he may have been unable to take full advantage of his position in a way that an official from a well-established gentry family would have found natural. Eventually, the Pakeman Manor house would be replaced by a Castle, built by William Lord Hastings, who also had a rise and fall in his life. Thank you Val for a very interesting insight into the Pakeman family.

The interactive map allows people to see right of way footpaths near them as well as highlighting over 150 specific walks. The map also allows users to filter by distance, such as long-distance walks, and interest, such as history or family walks. The walks can also be seen by difficulty, meaning they can be enjoyed by more people, no matter their ability. Leicestershire County Council is encouraging people to use their public footpaths as summer approaches, with benefits of walking including both improved health and reduced carbon emissions. With most county residents going walking, cycling, or riding at least once a month, residents have said they see access to the countryside as important. Leicestershire’s public footpaths make up 40% of highways in the county and are also used regularly in both town and rural locations for practical travel and leisure. Councillor Ozzy O’Shea, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We’re encouraging everyone to try out our network of public footpaths. Our county has some beautiful walks, all while improving our own personal health and helping us reach our net zero targets too.” “To find out more about our footpaths visit the map which makes it really easy to plan your journey out and make the most of our amazing countryside.” The site also has a wide range of leaflets for download or for use on your phone. To find out more, use the interactive map and plan your own footpath walk please go to: www.choosehowyoumove.co.uk/walks Any issues or problems with public footpaths can be reported at: https://bit. ly/3MSPSoY To have your say on our current net zero consultation go to: https://surveys. leics.gov.uk/snapwebhost/s.asp?k=165114339249 Leicestershire County Council Shire Grants. It is with a great pride, I wish our Queen good health and congratulations on her 70 years’ service to our country. The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977, her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002 and her Diamond Jubilee (60 years) in 2012. Never before has a British monarch celebrated 70 years on the throne, with Queen Victoria’s reign being the second longest at 63 years. Plant a tree for the jubilee The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique initiative which invites people from across the country to plant a tree and mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. You can find out more about how to get involved by visiting Queen's Green Canopy Trees benefit us in many ways, including cleaning the air we breathe, slowing the impact of climate change, creating wildlife habitats, and improving our overall health. We would like organisations and people across the county to plant their very own tree for the jubilee.

As a council we’ve helped organise these parties, waiving almost £450,000 in fee’s that it would normally cost to close the roads, as well as providing free signs for closed roads and advice for those organising street parties. We’re really pleased to have been able to help people celebrate this historic milestone and mark this historic moment. Burglaries in Markfield & Groby. I have been contacted by our local police officer who has asked to warn people that there have been several dwelling house burglaries in Markfield and one in Groby. They have all occurred between 1am and 2am in the mornings. I would urge all residents to make sure they lock their doors and windows, and make sure your property is secure when retiring to bed. Our local neighbourhood team are investigating these burglaries. Community Speed Watch, Leicestershire. During 2022 we will be working with our Partners to undertake a full review of how we deliver CSW going forward. CSW works largely via the good work of you as volunteers but it does require significant input from Leicestershire County Council as the Highway Authority and also the Police in terms of back office support with writing to the registered keepers of the vehicles detected speeding. Whilst this piece of work is ongoing, and to ensure we maximise our resources and that of our Partners, your request to run a scheme in your community will be measured against our criteria/hierarchy of intervention; this will determine what level of support we offer. For more information please email speedwatch@leics.gov.uk Community Speed Watch is an educational scheme to help people reduce speeding traffic though their community. The scheme enables volunteers to work within their community to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and to help control the problem locally. Community Speed Watch incorporates poster campaigns and a pledge system linked to direct action using speed detection equipment all under the supervision of the County Council. The use of the radar devices will not lead to prosecution – drivers will get a letter from the police instead – but will help to underline the community’s commitment to reducing speed. Please visit. www.communityspeedwatch.org.uk Full Council At May’s Full Council I was re-appointed to the Cabinet of Leicestershire County Council with the brief of “Highways Transportation and Flooding”. At this meeting I also supported a motion to assist Ukrainian refugees with free bus travel whilst living in the County. Finally I would like to thank you all for your continued support and remind you that should you need my help or advice, I always pride myself on making myself available to residents. Remember I am only a phone call or email away. Ozzy O’shea. Always Working for you

Lagan homes Proposal Markfield Road. Ratby. Well, our Thursday bank holiday was turned upside down, after residents along Markfield Road and the top end of the village were leafleted by Lagan Homes the company that bought Cawrey Ltd out. Clearly, they are not satisfied with building the 90 houses under construction on Markfield Road. They are now proposing another 75 houses adjacent to their current site heading out of the village. Ratby has been under the cosh because the Borough Council has failed to keep a 5year housing supply under the current administration. This village has taken far more than its fair share of this Borough Councils housing need. We all thought that we had beaten the previous Cawrey application, which was turned down by the Borough Councils planning committee and refused again at appeal and refused again at the High Court. When Cawrey resubmitted his application two years later. We were told at the planning committee by a member of the administration that those refusals meant nothing and granted Cawrey now Lagan Homes their current permission. We cannot cope with the current allocations they have forced upon this village. Our roads are backing up at peak times and at other parts of the day. Our school is full and primary school children are having to go to Martinshaw Primary School in Groby. I can confirm the other two Groby Primary schools are full. The administration are quite rightly telling us, we need to cut our carbon foot print. I fully agree, but parents are not going to walk their children to school all the way to the other side of Groby. We will all need to object to these proposals once the application is in. We will fully update residents, as soon as a validated application is submitted. We wanted to alert all residents, as not everyone has had a flyer which is shown on page 26 on this maagzine. We both fought hard on behalf our residents, to have any further allocations for Ratby removed from the new local plan. The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. We were both honoured to be invited by the Welfare Hall Committee to take part on Thursday 2nd June for a celebration lunch. Food was provided for 60 local residents including wine and cake which went down a treat. Congratulations to all those who made this possible and it just shows how our community comes together. Ratby Library. Due to historic problems, the library which is a valuable and vital asset to our community faces closure. We both would ask if any resident can help to make sure this does not happen then please get in touch with the library or us and we can pass on your details. We are both committed to ensure the library does not close. Hello and Goodbye. We take this opportunity to welcome a new business venture on Main Street, Ratby that is Glow and Get Faded. This is now run by Kelly and Nicola and offers sun beds and haircuts plus much more. We wish you every success. On a more sombre note, we pay tribute to the Pabari family who have ran Pabari's News for over 30 years in the village. We would take this time to wish Jay and Phil and their family a very well-earned retirement and thank you for your dedicated service to Ratby. Once again, we take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and remember we are only a phone call away. Regards Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

Cash Cows

Article by Steve Tunnicliffe I've not long got back from the "Vintage Cash Cows" event at the Village Hall and I'm sitting reflecting on the £100 I gained and the pile of stuff I parted with. If you were there you might have spotted me, I was the one looking more like an entrant on Scrapheap Challenge than a participant in Antiques Road Trip. As I unloaded the multiple boxes and bags from my boot I certainly felt that I was more likely to end up red faced than quids in. The leaflet stuck through my letter box mentioned clearing out garages. I was a little apprehensive because as far as I could see no one had taken that quite as literally as me. Taking my place in the queue I waited my turn trying to catch wind of the proceedings but discretion was to the fore, fair play to the Cash Cows for that, and very little was to be gleaned from the people taking their place at the table before me. They came and went, nothing learned, then it was my turn. The assistants, realising the situation, had already cleared a very long table and I spread my curios upon it. Despite or perhaps because I have worked in the entertainment industry a lot of my adult life I am actually very poor at recognising celebrity. I think it was the main man but which one he is I still have absolutely no idea about. Shiny suit, white shirt, no tie and straight to it. A quick poke, in fact a very quick poke, " how much have you got in mind?", I looked at the table. An old Australian orange crate packed with OXO tins from the 1950's, a collection of trine, a couple of medals, not the family ones, a bunch of old tools, etc. etc.. "You tell me I said", a poor opening gambit but the only strategy I had. "£100 but I don't want the mink coat". Well everyone knows you don't take the first price, so I didn't. Quick as a flash and thinking that little extra will be a couple of pints and a pizza in the Red Cow, "£120" I countered. "No", it was a tone that didn't take any bargaining. I looked at the table another time, picking a couple of immaculate vintage 20 yard tape measures and said these do 30 quid alone. The answer was more or less perhaps but I've got to sell them. There's the rub. I knew there was money to be had there. I've been to enough antique / vintage/ collectable places and seen far too many of the antiques shows on early evening TV. Despite my misgivings I knew this stuff was saleable and I knew there was more money to be made than I was being offered. What I also knew was that I really couldn't be doing with the hassle of selling it. Business is nothing if you can't sell it and looking at that pile on the table I knew I really couldn't be bothered. I shook his hand. Although I wish I'd made more of the pile of silver cutlery, I didn't get the chance to open out, I don't have any regrets. Except perhaps my own idleness when it comes to selling. It's a buyers' market and this is actually where I come to the point of this ramble. Alongside my experience and qualifications as a rigger, in the entertainment and live events industry, I'm an NICEIC Approved Electrical Contractor. I specialise in inspection, testing and repairs. Mostly domestic and schools. I do the rest, additions, rewiring, etc., but that's the meat on my bone. The day before "Cash Cows" I had a call from a local lady who's daughter had just managed to pull her light from the ceiling, exposing live wires and tripping the upstairs lights. A bread and butter job for me but in the course of it revelations were made that have me writing this. Her daughter had wilfully and rather naughtily, narrowly escaped electrocution or at least curly hair by deliberately pulling her ceiling pendant out of the sky. This was nothing at all to do with the electrician who had rewired her house in August 2020. This electrician like me is also registered with NICEIC and advertises and operates locally. Unfortunately for my client when her previous electrician had rewired her property he, for reasons of his own and despite numerous requests, declined to issue the necessary certification and notification for his work. Rightly my client was worried that without current certification for her electrics her household insurance might be invalid, in the event of an electrical fire or incident, we all know how wriggly insurance companies can be. If something had gone unnoticed because of her daughter's actions, well we can draw our own conclusions on that. This left my client in the position where she wanted to engage me to certify her installation. I am happy to provide this service. It's something I do all the time. However I cannot provide legal notification documents for an installation I did not complete as I cannot assume responsibility for work I did not complete or supervise. What I can do however is what I did for this client.

28 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

I explained that NICEIC membership is conditional and that members have to comply with standards for continued membership, the least of which is issuing the legally required documentation and certification for our work. My client had given up trying to get in touch with her previous electrician and was living in worry as a result. She had become so fearful that she was willing to pay me to issue documentation for work that he should have provided as a matter of course. Documentation that I could not in true compliance provide. Whether it is the NICEIC or anyone of a number of "approved contractor schemes" each and every one of them has a few things in common that every buyer should know. Approved schemes such as the NICEIC have customer searchable registers. If you go to their website and find the right page you will be able to search a service provider by name or by area. If they are not there they are not registered. Surprise, some people advertise credentials and membership they do not have. The NICEIC, in common with other approved contractor schemes, has a complaints procedure which all members are obliged to comply with. This is the customers' surety and one which I fear is not widely understood. I steered my client through the complaints process and soon a very helpful lady at NICEIC customer services was on board and providing all the necessary documents and guidance. My client was able to complete these forms that evening and for the first time, in almost 2 years, actually feel she had some control again. She copied me into the completed forms and I was saddened to see that in addition to the absent certification my client had paid for additional outlets that were never installed. Most notably a power supply for her kitchen extractor now reduced to purely ornamental status. In a clever inversion the real Cash Cows of my village hall experience were actually the sellers who provided the buyers with fresh stock they know they will be able to sell profitably. That's the business and it's a good one. We are under no pressure to sell and ease and convenience all have a price in such matters. I don't have a list of a couple of hundred vintage outlets I can offload a crate of OXO tins to, over to you Mr. Vintage. When we buy a service though the one thing we most definitely must not be is a Cash Cow for the provider. We must get what we pay for and all those little labels and logos you will see on just about every trade persons' advert ought to be your guarantee that you will. Goodness knows why this did not happen for my client, it's not my business, but the fact that she had done the right thing and chosen an electrician who is a member of one of these schemes means, whether she knew it or not, that she has a course for redress. Now that this process has started I fully expect that one way or another she will get her certificates and a working kitchen extractor. Importantly too she will no longer feel that she is just another victim losing out in an uncaring world of male trades, living fearful of further calamity for which she is no longer covered by her insurance because of some clever clauses in her household policy. As I sit here nursing a supermarket brew, not the champagne my more fanciful imaginings might have envisaged, I reflect on these events and much as I did when I shook Mr. Vintage's hand think, "I can settle for that". My name is Steven Tunnicliffe and I have an NICEIC registered electrical business called Welford Lamplighters. I am based in Kirby Muxloe and operate throughout the county. You can find me in the local advertisers and online at welfordlamplighters.co.uk

Peri-menopause And You Article by Garry Trickett

Menopause officially marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. This life stage is well known, but there are different stages within menopause, such as peri-menopause, that are less well known, yet not without symptoms. Medically speaking, peri-menopause starts when the first menopausal symptoms are noticed, typically mid-40s, and ends a year after the last menstrual bleed, or the point in time when menopause has been reached. Biologically speaking, peri-menopause marks a decline in the production of hormones that drive the menstrual cycle, specifically oestrogen and progesterone. Although part of the same overall life transition, menopause and perimenopause can have different symptoms. During peri-menopause, you may start to experience symptoms of menopause, such as hot flushes and night sweats, but peri-menopause symptoms can vary greatly, and in some women, are similar to symptoms of PMS. A few more frequently encountered symptoms during peri-menopause include: irregular, painful periods or periods that are heavier than usual, breast pain, hair loss, anxiety and irritability, dryness, temperature irregularity, trouble sleeping and insomnia (and consequently tiredness), low mood and libido, and muscle and joint aches and pains. A key point to appreciate is that your adrenal glands (which produce adrenalin when you are stressed) are able to make ‘back-up’ hormones to buffer the fall of oestrogen and progesterone during the menopause. They are less able to do this if you are highly stressed and therefore demanding adrenalin production. Factor in some R&R as a matter of priority to keep the transition from peri-menopause to menopause a happy time. There are also a number of natural treatments and herbal remedies that can help to smooth this transition for you. A.Vogel’s Menopause Support tackles all stages of menopause, and contains soy isoflavones which naturally mimic the effect of oestrogen in the body. Isoflavones, oestrogen-like plant hormones or phytoestrogens, can provide an additional hormone boost when oestrogen levels are low. Sage helps to correct sweat regulation and diminish hot flushes. Fresh sage tincture diluted in a little water three times daily can really help. Try Menosan Sage Drops or for extra oomph, Menoforce Sage Tablets. And for trouble sleeping, there’s Valerian. For emotional support during any time of challenge, nothing beats exercise. It’s a great way of producing happy chemicals (endorphins), metabolising carbs, toning muscle (which then burns more calories), and working off aggressive feelings. Any type of exercise that takes your fancy is fine, so long as it gets you moving or toning. For further information, visit Gary and his team at The Health Store, West Bridgford or call 0115 9814080.

Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release of nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating growth. This sophisticated treatment also includes a weed control to help eradicate those which are unwelcome on your lawn, keeping your lawn looking its best ready for summer. An added benefit of our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is that you’ll also receive an application of our fantastic water conserver, Oasis. Now is the perfect time

for an Oasis Treatment as it helps your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. Let’s create the lawn we both love.
