ANDREW BRIDGEN MP PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR MORE INCLUSIVE TRAVEL Andrew Bridgen MP this week pledged support for a new national campaign calling for more accessible travel and transport for young wheelchair users following the release of a report by disabled children’s charity Whizz-Kidz.

The Whizz-Kidz Get on Board report found that 70% of wheelchair users and their families and carers can’t travel as independently as they would like to and two in three do not feel confident enough to use public transport.

Andrew Bridgen MP said accessible travel and transport has the ability to revolutionise the way young wheelchair users travel to work or school, go to appointment, socialise and visit family.

“While access to transport has improved a great deal over the last twenty years, inaccessible transport is still preventing many young wheelchair users from living full lives. That’s why I’m supporting Whizz-Kidz’s campaign – because I believe wheelchair users should be able to travel with the same freedom and independence as everyone

else. I’m calling on local travel and transport providers and my constituents to ‘Get on Board’ and think about the changes they can make to help achieve this,” Andrew Bridgen MP said.

The Whizz-Kidz campaign is calling for: • Improvements to infrastructure, information and facilities so that the network is more accessible for wheelchair users.

• The general public to respect young wheelchair users’ right to travel so that they do not feel scared to travel alone.

• Regular and meaningful disability awareness training so that staff working in transport have a better understanding of the needs of young wheelchair users, which will support them to best assist young disabled travellers.

• Involvement of young disabled people in the planning, auditing and design of services and policies so that their voices are heard at all levels.

• Representation of young wheelchair users in travel marketing materials so that

people can see what young wheelchair users can do, not what they can’t!

To spearhead change, WhizzKidz recently formed a national Accessible Travel Alliance – an industry leading group made up of forward-thinking travel operators, to make a real and lasting difference to disabled people’s experience of travel.

Alliance partners who have signed up to the Get on Board campaign include Gatwick, Heathrow, National Express, OmniServ, Stagecoach and Transport for London.

George Fielding, Chair of the Whizz-Kidz Kidz Board, said: ‘We are delighted that Andrew Bridgen MP was able to join us this week to hear about our experiences of transport and our recommendations for improving things. We simply would not be able to transform the lives of young wheelchair users without the support of MPs such as Andrew Bridgen MP. Together, we can make a real difference.’

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN WILDLIFE? Did you know there is a local club for folks who share this interest ?

It meets on the First Friday of the month, from September through until April, at 7.30 pm in the Marlene Reid Centre, 85 Belvoir Road, Coalville. Each meeting has a speaker who will show their pictures and explain about the wildlife they are interested in.

These presentations cover birds, insects, mammals and flowers - usually seen locally, though sometimes further afield.

In the summer months we organise trips to local reserves to show where the wildlife can be found.

The club was started by wellknown local Naturalist called Peter Williams, so the club is named after him. Sadly, Peter died a couple of years ago, but his son, Richard Williams, is now our President.

If you think you would enjoy coming to our meetings and learning more about Wildlife, then please feel free to come as a visitor and suss us out ! If you already know a lot about wildlife and would enjoy sharing your knowledge with us, then please come along! FREE PARKING OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON! From Saturday 21st November until Boxing Day, North West Leicestershire District Council is offering free parking in designated car parks. Across Coalville and Ashby de la Zouch shoppers will be able to take advantage of free parking spaces in the rush to complete Christmas wish-lists.

The last display, of artefacts from our collection, has been a great success and we will replace them with other items not normally seen, at the end of November.

Do come along to view the new exhibition.

The Museum is well stocked with local history books and booklets and has recently re-stocked with our annual Past and Present magazine (going back several years) and All of a Lather, the story of Ashby’s Standard Soap factory. Other publications deal with The Spa Town, Ashby during the 17th Century, Market Street and Inns and Alehouses. Both the last two are profusely illustrated.

Museum staff are glad to have helped several individuals on

research topics, including World War 2, Ashby’s Green Spaces and the village of Lount. Further acquisitions have been accepted relating to Staunton Harold and some items have been loaned to us for temporary exhibition.

Both the Museum and Friends of Ashby Museum held their A.G.M.s during October which have been useful in planning for the future.

The Museum will close for the Christmas period from Saturday December 19th to Monday January 4th.

Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business, said “This is an incentive for people to go into town centres to do their Christmas shopping. In doing so, they are supporting local businesses and bringing more money into local areas, rather than using the internet to shop online. ASHBY CIVIC SOCIETY MEETING REPORT Ashby Civic Society members travelled back in time from the prosperous trading period of the river Trent to the present day.

It’s not all work down at the Venture Theatre, especially at this time of year with Christmas just around the corner. Ashby Dramatic Society provides plenty of social opportunities for members to get together and enjoy themselves.

These spaces will be available every Saturday all day from Saturday 21st November until Saturday 26th December.

The big social event of the festive season is the ADS Christmas Dinner. As many members as possible gather at a local restaurant to enjoy a meal and a drink. It is undoubtedly the biggest gathering of members of the year, and so it can be difficult finding a suitable venue big enough to cater for us all but, although venues change or go out of business, we always manage it.

Generations of hard working families worked this main water artery to the heart of the Midlands and beyond carrying coal, food, livestock or passengers. The river traffic has changed enormously and today leisure boats replace the cargo carriers.

Yet another unusual talk for Civic Society members and all bought to life with rare photos and anecdotes from our Speaker Richard Stone. wine and mince pies. Again, it is a night when more members than usual will gather and catch up on the news.

Christmas is also the time when we try to choose a play that will fit in with the festive season.

This year we are performing Ken Ludwig’s The Game’s Afoot, a comedy whodunit set in a big mansion during the Christmas holidays which runs until Saturday 5th December, tickets from Ashby Tourist Information Centre.

8th December we have the most popular event of the year, our magical Christmas social. Always a sell-out. Good food, good company and entertainment at an unusual venue.

ANDREW BRIDGEN MP VISITS ASHBY FOODBANK Andrew Bridgen, the Member of Parliament for North West Leicestershire visited Ashby Foodbank to meet with Project Manager Noreen Mewies and local volunteers.

ASHBY MAYOR UNVEILS NEW PLAQUE IN BATH GROUNDS The Mayor of Ashby, Mrs Mary Tuckey, has unveiled a new plaque in the Bath Grounds to celebrate the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds planting of a new flower bed. The Mayor was joined by the committee of the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds who have planted and are maintaining the flower bed at the South Street entrance to the Bath Grounds in Ashby de la Zouch.

On unveiling the plaque, the Mayor said “I am very pleased to join the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds to unveil this plaque. We should celebrate when people want to improve the town and make it a better place for us all.”

Elaine Robinson, Chair of the Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds, said “We have taken over responsibility for this flower bed as

one small contribution towards our aim to protect and improve the Bath Grounds. Our new maintence meetings with the Town Council and the Pride in our Bath Grounds campaign to tackle litter, dog waste and anti-social behaviour are also making a real difference.”

The Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds work and campaign to protect and improve the Bath Grounds as a free, public access park and recreational facility for the benefit of the whole community.

SMALL GRANT SCHEME IMPROVES THE FACE OF LIBRARY The Ashby Castle Women’s Institute has received £150 from the Small Grant Scheme. The money is being used to renovate and maintain the frontage of the Ashby de la Zouch library, which has undergone a fantastic transformation.

They were granted a licence to plant by Leicestershire County Council who owns the land that the library is built on. They are now the proud owners of a green space complete with flower beds.

The grant scheme, provided by North West Leicestershire District Council, aims to help build on and improve local projects and will grant up to £500 for any individual cause.

The Ashby’s Woman Institute, based at the Congregational Church in Ashby, only needed £150 but the results are incredible.

The group will fund-raise every year to sustain the grass verge, which has greatly improved the appearance of the library and is enjoyed by local people.

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said “This is the kind of project the Small Grant Scheme was created for, to help small projects run by the community for the community. So we are proud to have supported the Woman’s Institute in their project to improving the appearance of Ashby Library.”

NEW APP LAUNCHED AT HERMITAGE AND HOOD PARK LEISURE CENTRES The beginning of November saw Hermitage and Hood Park Leisure Centres launch their new leisure app.

Linking into the leisure centres booking system, the App is designed to make the booking of and paying for activities at both leisure centres easier so that they can book on the go easily.

Since going live the App has been downloaded 115 times and opened 868 in the first week alone.

Customer feedback so far is that the App is very easy to use and is a great improvement to booking at the leisure centres and seeing what court and class spaces are available.

Salted Caramel AND Apple Rolls Part Danish pastry, part sticky bun, these upmarket tea-time rolls are simply delicious FOR THE FILLING

• 200g/7oz caster sugar • 1 tbsp water • 200ml/7fl oz whipping cream • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped into small cubes • 3/4 tsp sea salt

FOR THE DOUGH

• 250ml/8½fl oz full-fat milk • 25g/1oz butter • 500g/1lb strong white flour 1tsp salt • 1 x 7g/¼oz sachet fast-action dried yeast • vegetable oil, for greasing

METHOD

For the filling, heat the sugar and water in a large saucepan set over a medium heat until the sugar melts and forms a caramel. (Do not stir the caramel.)

Meanwhile, gently warm the cream in a saucepan. Carefully, add one-third of the cream to the caramel and, once the bubbling has subsided, whisk in the remaining cream and sea salt.

Pour the mixture into a bowl and set aside until completely cooked.

For the dough, warm the milk and butter in a saucepan until the butter has melted and the mixture is lukewarm.

DECKING THE HALLS

Gathering Foliage

This year seems to have flown by so quickly, it’s hard to believe that it’s nearly Christmas. The weather has been so mild that it doesn’t feel right to be writing about the holly and the ivy just yet! But it will soon be time for me to gather foliage, cones & berries from my garden to decorate the house during the festive season. This year I’ll be making a wreath for the front door and table decorations and swags to adorne the Christmas table and fireplace.

For just a few pounds and an hour or so of creative fun, it’s possible to bring the garden indoors and build on the festive atmosphere. If you’re short of foliage in your own garden, see if family or friends can spare some or buy a few bunches from your local florist.

Materials and tools for a traditional table decoration Getting Prepared

A ceramic or glass container without drainage holes (vital to avoid damaging the table) – Use anything you have tall, short, long or thin, whatever will fit your table. Don’t use the best china though as the water can stain the glaze.

Tools and materials - Secateurs to cut the stems to length & florists foam (aka Oasis) – easy to buy from the local florist.

Foliage - Evergreens are used as the primary foliage. My favourites are Laurel, Leylandii and Holly.

A deep green foliage base can be enhanced with accents of variegated foliage like Holly, Euonymous and Pittosporum.

Stems of Rosemary, Viburnum and Sarcococca will add fragrance from their flowers or foliage. The foliage pieces need to be about 15cm long to give sufficient length to push into the oasis foam. Last year I added springs of winter flowering heather too.

Embellishments – pine or alder cones are good to give a natural look. Holly, Pyracantha or Cotoneaster berries are a must. I also use Rosehips, Rowan berries and Crab apples too. For a more country styles I use little bundled twigs of Dogwood or Willow inserted in between the base foliage to add a splash of colour and a naturalistic touch.

Time for the foliage. Start with the evergreen base foliage. Decide on the overall proportions you require and cut the foliage to length. There should be 5cm or so of stem to push into the foam.

The new year will soon be upon us and garden centres will be stocked up with seed potatoes.

So next month I’ll be looking at which to choose and how to grow your own tasty tatties.

Soak the foam in a bucket of water before use, then cut to shape with a bread knife and make sure it is a snug fit in the vase/container, it can be taped in place if needed. The foliage stems will draw the moisture from the foam so soak it well.

MRC CHRISTMAS TOY APPEAL

THREE TEAMS TALK THEIR WAY INTO NEXT ROUND Three teams of students from Ashby School have made it through to the next round of a national public speaking competition.

Ashby School hosted the first round of the Rotary International public speaking competition ‘Youth Speaks’, organised by the Ashby Rotary clubs. All three teams representing the school advancing to the district semifinals of the national competition which will take place on 2 February 2016 at Beauchamp College, Leicester.

The judges had difficulties deciding the winners, but eventually awarded first place to the Year 12 team of Sam Wheeler, Tom Gamble and Jack Kowalski.

The trio presented a powerful speech on the death penalty, entitled ‘Murder or Mercy?’

In second place by just one point were the Year 13 students Frank

Micklethwaite, Edan Weeks and Elijah Bennett who delivered a thought-provoking speech on William Blake, the 18th century poet, titled ‘Is Blake’s vision still relevant today?’

Also advancing to the next round were the Year 12 team of Kane McKenna-Jones, Katie McGough and André Bosma, who delivered a moving speech on bullying titled ‘Is School Safe?’

Judges praised all three teams for their ‘professional conduct’ and the ‘high standard’ of the presentations. Ruth Andre-Evans, a member of the Ashby Castle Rotary Club has worked with the students to prepare and rehearse their speeches.

She said "I feel very proud’ of the teams for reaching this level in such a short time. I believe public speaking skills give students an 'X Factor' compared to others when applying for university places or job interviews; in fact, they are an essential life skill. I am looking forward to working with the three teams to prepare them for the stiff competition they will face in the next round."

CHILDREN IN NEED TOTAL TOPS £950 AT IBSTOCK COLLEGE Fun and fundraising helped staff and students at Ibstock Community College to raise more than £950 for Children in Need.

Most of the money raised came from charity stalls which were organised and run by students in the college sports hall during an extended lunch break.

Students sold homemade cakes, ran games and quizzes and even painted nails to boost the charity total. Students also donated £1 each to leave their uniforms at home and come to college in their own clothes.

Student Josh Oldknow boosted the final sum by holding a sponsored silence.

The latest total had topped £960, with some final donations still coming in. College coordinator Louise Reeve said: “We are absolutely delighted to have raised so much money for Children in Need. The students showed real initiative and commitment by organising and running some fantastic stalls.

Everyone enjoyed the chance to get involved – and especially tucking into the delicious cakes!”

WHAT IS THE MRC TOY APPEAL? Each year this local charity relies on the generosity of local churches, schools & families who donate cash and brand new toys which are then given to children in and around North West Leicestershire.

SEAN SHEAHAN Highways round-up

I am pleased to report that a number of local highway improvements projects have now been completed. The 30mph zone on Ashby Road, Moira has been extended from the railway bridge to just past Sweethill. As reported previously, the police objected to the 30mph zone being extended any further up Ashby Road, as they did over a request for a 40mph limit outside the Hicks Lodge cycle centre on Willesley Woodside, near Moira. However, the police and Highways did agree to the speed limit being reduced to 50mph from the Moira end of Willesley Woodside and the signs have now gone in.

Measham High Street is looking a lot better, now that the speed humps and the roadway at the mini-roundabout on the junction with Leicester Road have been repaired. At the other end of Measham, a petition has been drawn up with 215 signatures, calling for traffic calming on Widgeon Drive in response to a serious accident involving a child in the summer. I presented the petition to North West Leicestershire Highways Forum on 2nd November, and this should be followed up, firstly by a site meeting with Highways’ Officers, the Parish Council and Riverview Tenants’ and Residents Association and then a report to the next Highways Forum with recommendations for action.

Thanks to everyone who signed the petition and those who helped to collect signatures.

The same meeting of the Highways Forum received a report back on an earlier petition, calling for traffic calming on Measham Road, Oakthorpe. The report said “The evidence suggests that a level of improved safety should be directed towards the vulnerable road users in the area and where the accident history is.

With evidence of speeds high around the pedestrian crossing, consultation will take place on improvements such as creating a raised table at the pedestrian crossing, and installing ‘Zebrite’ beacons to provide far greater forward visibility for motorists of vulnerable road users.” The report goes on to say that these proposals will be included in the 2016/17 budget. Whilst the suggestion of a speed hump at the zebra crossing is most

Moira Bus Service Following the petition against the bus service cuts in Moira, a County Council officer came out to talk to Ashby Woulds Town Councillors. I think it’s well known that Arriva withdrew the bus service because it was unprofitable for them. When this happened in Measham last year, another bus operator, Midland Classic stepped in and extended one of their existing services to cover Measham. As things stand, Midland Classic have not done the same in Moira, but in the hope of persuading them to have another look, the County Council are in the process of arranging a meeting between the Town Council and Midland Classic, which I also plan to attend.

Whatever the outcome of this meeting, the current system for providing bus services needs to change – the percentage of bus services provided on a purely commercial basis is already over 90% and increasing. I believe this trend needs to be reversed, with local councils being able to support local communities in having more of a say in when and where bus services run.

Fire at Sarah’s Wood play area

The attacks in Paris on 13 November were the worst act of violence in France since the Second World War. The victims were innocent people spending time with friends and family, doing no one any harm. Our solidarity with the people of France in the last few days has been absolute and it showed our Country at its best.

Our solidarity now needs to extend into countering the threat of ISIS. I have commented on this widely in the media in recent days and to give some background to this, in 2013 a vote was called in the House of Commons to allow Military action in Syria. The target was the regime of Bashar al-Assad and the action proposed was to assist rebel forces. I listened carefully to the arguments put by the Government at the time, and whilst there is no doubt that the al-Assad regime is despicable, I reflected on the experiences of Iraq and other Countries where regime change had been achieved through intervention, and the subsequent issues that have transpired following this. Further to this, I led the rebellion that voted the proposal down.

Whilst al-Assad was not a direct threat to this Country, ISIS without a doubt are. What happened in Paris could as easily have happened in the London, Birmingham, Leicester or indeed anywhere in the UK. We know that our Security Services

The police and fire brigade suspect that the fire which recently destroyed Sarah’s Wood play area in Moira was started deliberately. If so, this was a cruel and heartless act and I hope that whoever is responsible is apprehended and dealt with by the courts.

The County Council, who own and maintain the play area, did not have it insured against fire.

Also, the site was in the process of being transferred to The Heart of The Forest Charitable Foundation. This puts the whole question of whether the play area can be re-opened in doubt.

I understand the equipment was very old and due to be replaced or upgraded, so there is a possibility that the new owners were already thinking about doing this. The County Council are shortly to have discussions with them and I hope to see a positive outcome.

have thwarted 7 recent terrorism attempts. I supported strikes against ISIS targets in Iraq so the current position of not striking the targets in Syria is plainly illogical.

On this basis, and given the strikes will be against targets that represent a threat to our national security, I will be giving my full backing to strikes in Syria if and when there is a vote in the House of Commons.

I have received a number of correspondence in recent days about our security position in the UK and I know it is a matter of great concern so I will outline the actions currently being undertaken by the Government.

New funding will be invested in intelligence agencies to provide for an additional 1,900 officers, an increase of 15 per cent, at MI5, MI6 and GCHQ. There will also be a step change in the Government’s approach to aviation security following the Sinai disaster, with the Prime Minister ordering a review of security at airports around the world.

There is also a lot of concern about the security of our borders, particularly with the freedom of movement within the EU. To clarify this point, because the UK opted out of the Schengen Agreement, which was established in 1995 by the EU to abolish passport controls between borders, we have been able to refuse entry to almost 6,000 EU nationals. Further to that since 2010, we have denied entry to nearly 95,000 and one of the principal reasons we prevent people coming into our country – EU nationals and non-EU nationals – is national security.

We must however remain vigilant in the face of this threat and the Government is committed to maintaining our national security in the face of this threat.

Finally I do just want to touch on the horrific events in Ibstock and the tragic loss of Kayleigh Haywood. I write this after attending the vigil for Kayleigh in Measham, and words cannot express the heartbreak and devastation Kayleigh’s family and friends are facing right now. We have a strong sense of community here in North West Leicestershire and that has been evident over the last few days. I want to pay tribute to the work carried out by the Police and the volunteers in Ibstock who assisted in the search, and I’m sure all our prayers will be with Kayleigh’s family and friends at this tragic time.
