All Aboard For The Outwoods!

A double decker bus café has pulled in to serve customers with fine refreshments at the Outwoods in Loughborough.

The Loughborough beauty spot has welcomed the Ella Louise Double Decker bus café and it will open for business on Saturday August 26.

The café, run by Peppercorn Catering, can seat up to 35 people upstairs and will be open every weekend at the Outwoods.

Cllr Hilary Fryer, Lead Member for Open Spaces and Leisure Services and chair of the Outwoods Management Committee, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Ella Louise to the Outwoods. The woodland is extremely popular with residents and we hope they will enjoy everything this different and novel café has to offer.

Peppercorn Catering are a local company and it’s great to work with them. Along with the Outwoods Management Committee, we are trying to improve facilities at the Outwoods and the café will be here on a 12 month trial basis. We will see how it goes and then take it from there.

In the meantime, please hop on board and enjoy a cuppa.”

Cathy Cliffe, managing director of Peppercorn Catering, which also has cafes in Barrow upon Soar, Anstey and Abbey Park in Leicester, said “We are delighted to open the café at the Outwoods and look forward to meeting the visitors here. The bus is a bit different and people quite enjoy sitting upstairs with a cuppa and a bite to eat. Now they’ll be able to do that while overlooking the beautiful Outwoods.”

This weekend, the double decker bus café will be open on Saturday and Sunday and bank holiday Monday (August 28). In the past it has been located in different places around the county including Bradgate Park.

Earlier this year the Outwoods secured Green Flag status for the ninth year running. The scheme is run by Keep Britain Tidy and recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces in the UK.

Opening on 6th October at Loughborough Library, Granby Street, is a new exhibition produced by Tony Jarram together with Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers, it will depict Bill Cody's lifetime as a Pony Express rider, buffalo hunter and scout and tell of the Wild West shows that he produced and directed. Bill Cody’s exciting life and times give us an insight into the American West during the era of cowboys and Indians when the buffalo herds roamed the plains. In later life Buffalo Bill exhibited his experiences in the "Wild West" shows that toured America and Europe from the 1880s to the 1900s, visiting Loughborough in 1903. Surprisingly, his ancestors had emigrated to America from Jersey in the late 1600s, his family name originally being Le Courdey. The exhibition is free to visit during Library opening hours.

Bells Cast By Taylor's Destined For St George's Memorial Church In Ypres There was a great turnout in Queens Park for the start of the journey for the bells, cast by Taylor's for St George's Memorial Church in Ypres. The church was built for the British community in the city after WW1 and the plan to install bells was never realised until now. They will be ringing by Remembrance Sunday this year.

So come on why not be part of “Learn to Sing in Harmony“ The free 'Learn to Sing in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS. Aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men, young and older to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle.

There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing.

Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s free!

With the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips and Assistant MD Christine Dickens participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn the specially-commissioned song.

For men who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment.

There Should Be A Will, And There Is A Way! For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will.

To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated legacy to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times.

There is just a week to go before this year’s offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Alzheimer’s Society Seeks Volunteers To Help Make A Difference To The Lives Of People With Dementia Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland is looking for volunteers to support people with dementia keep doing the things they love. The charity has launched a recruitment drive for ‘Side By Side volunteers’ to work across both counties. The service involves people with dementia and volunteers doing things such as visiting the gym, walking or visiting places of interest together.

There are 12000 people living with dementia in Leicestershire and 600 people with dementia in Rutland, and that number is expected to rise.

Suna Tilley, Alzheimer’s Society Side By Side Coordinator for Leicestershire and Rutland said: “The sad reality is that people with dementia can often become isolated and find it difficult to remain part of their community. Taking part in hobbies or activities they previously enjoyed can seem too difficult. This is what Side by Side aims to change.

We currently have 36 volunteers in Leicestershire and Rutland and we need to double that number. It's a flexible way to give your time and you really can make a huge difference to someone's life.”

Volunteers are given training and are reimbursed for expenses.

Finding The Right Nursery For Your Little One If you are not familiar with early years education, it can be difficult to know what kind of environment will suit your child and enable them to flourish. As you explore different options, it helps to go armed with a list of questions, as Carla Brindley, Manager at The Nursery at Loughborough Endowed Schools, explains.

Going to nursery school is a milestone in both yours and your child’s life – so it’s natural to feel apprehensive. Quite apart from the fact that you may be reluctant to leave them when you return to work, you’ve probably also got a million questions swirling around in your mind, from what’s on the curriculum to pastoral care. Below are just a few considerations to make the process a little less nerve-wracking.

Qualifications Knowing the people who care for your child hold relevant qualifications should go a long way in allaying your concerns.

Most nursery schools insist on at least a Level 2 qualification in childcare and / or early years education, although there may still be volunteers or work experience students.

When you visit any nursery, always ask to see examples of the menu and call in during a mealtime so you can see exactly how it works, particularly if your little one has an allergy or is a fussy eater!

Remember to ask the manager about the teacherto-child ratio and how they track development and keep parents informed about progress.

Ofsted All Ofsted reports are available online and while they can’t tell you everything, they do give you a good indication of standards.

Go through the document and look at how highly the nursery scores in areas such as safeguarding and teaching, in line with the EYFS guidelines.

Of course, there are likely to be others at the nursery educated to a higher level, perhaps holding a degree or Level 3 diploma.

Never be afraid to quiz managers about the team’s qualifications, particularly for those in a supervisory role.

What else to look for Qualifications and Ofsted inspections normally only tell half the story – you also need to spend time looking at how staff interact with children and whether they can engage them through storytelling, playtime and other activities.

Mealtimes At home, you plan meals meticulously according to your child’s unique requirements, but when they go to nursery, how can you be sure they are getting the right nutrition? On top of that, what if they have an allergy or intolerance?

Be bold in asking about the nursery’s ethos and vision for the future and don’t just visit during pre-arranged taster days. Going along during ‘normal service’ will give you a better idea of how the nursery is run and, most importantly of all, how happy the children are.

It was a particular pleasure to attend the Charnwood College Excellence Awards evening earlier this month. It is always tremendous to hear how the College is doing and to hear about the individual success stories of their pupils.

Further congratulations are due to everyone who was part of the Loughborough in Bloom competition this year and worked so hard to ensure Loughborough received a Gold award in the Small City category. The floral displays in Queen’s Park were really spectacular and lots of people noticed and enjoyed them. But there were so many other great examples of blooming flowers across the town, which really demonstrated what a major team effort Loughborough in Bloom is.

There is currently a vacancy for a school crossing patrol in the Wharncliffe Road area of town.

School crossing patrols are vital to ensure pupils get to and from school safely. Being on duty takes about 40 minutes twice a day on each day of term, the

position is paid throughout the year and training and a uniform will be provided.

Leicestershire County Council relies on the local community to come forward and they are now appealing directly for someone who is reliable and conscientious, who would be prepared to take on this rewarding role. You will need to be willing to have a medical and must complete a Disclosure & Barring Service form to authorise a Police check.

Politicians Wear It Pink For Breast Cancer Fundraiser Loughborough MP poses in pink at Westminster to support Breast Cancer Now’s vital research Nicky Morgan, MP for Loughborough, has dressed in pink to lend her support to Breast Cancer Now’s flagship fundraiser, wear it pink, which will see thousands of people across the UK adding a splash of pink to their outfits on Friday 20 October and raise vital funds for breast cancer research.

Nicky is encouraging her constituents to join her, and sign up to take part in the UK’s biggest pink fundraiser. The event, which takes place during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is in its 16th year and has raised over £30 million to date for Breast Cancer Now’s life-saving research.

Nicky was joined by fellow parliamentarians in Westminster earlier this month to show their support for the thousands of women and men affected by breast cancer each year, encouraging people across the UK to take part on wear it pink day.

Anyone can take part in wear it pink, which brings together schools, workplaces and communities. All you need to do is wear something pink, or hold a pink event at home, work or school, and make a donation to Breast Cancer Now. Whatever you do, you’re helping the charity achieve its aim that, if we all act now, by 2050 everyone who develops breast cancer will live.
