Latest News From Charnwood Indoor Bowls Centre

With all the current publicity about getting people more active and finding a sport in which everyone can participate I would like to tell you all about indoor bowls in Charnwood.

But first a bit about our clubs history. We are situated in Browns Lane,Loughborough to the left hand side of the Leisure Centre. We are very proud that the club was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales on Thursday 26th April 1990. Her picture takes pride of place on our club's lounge wall.

indoor bowls club as good as any in the Midlands.

Indoor bowls is an enjoyable,rewarding sport that also offers great health benefits.

It is a sociable activity for all ages from 10 to 100. As it is not dependent on strength or aerobic capacity it is a unique,multigenerational sport that men,women and children can enjoy playing together.

Wheelchairs are available for disabled participants, as are aids for the visually impaired.

How many other sports allow disabled people to play in the same team as the able bodied without any sporting disadvantage?

Indoor bowls can be as social or competitive as participants require. We have purely social bowlers and also members who compete in county and national competitions.

In April 2017 the Leicestershire county indoor bowls finals were held at Charnwood Indoor Bowls club. There were many exciting matches and our club now boasts 4 county champions.

For anyone interested in giving this superb sport a try we offer,by prior arrangement, a free initial session with coaching advice and bowls provided. You don't need any other equipment just wear comfortable clothes. For people who wish to continue there is free coaching every Sunday morning between 10am and 12 noon.

If people wish to come on their own,or with a friend, to practice that is not a problem.

However,there are also sessions on several days of the week where single bowlers can participate in bowls drives,where teams are allocated by picking a rink number. There are U3A groups,Women's Institutes and scouts amongst others who play regularly amongst themselves or in one of the many leagues or friendly matches that are organised by the club.

What Badge Or Crest Is This?

Followers of this page have, in the past, helped us to identify a number of objects that have baffled us.

This is the silver top of a Swagger Stick or Walking Out Cane. Soldiers carried them when in uniform and off duty. They had no military purpose except. perhaps, as a symbol of authority.

There appears to be a hare? on the right-hand side and something on the left-hand side which we cannot identify. Is the crown British?

What's New At The Museum

Make A Date With The Loughborough Orchestra Summer Concert!

During the First World War, wives, sisters and girlfriends commonly wore pin-brooches depicting miniature badges of units in which male loved ones were serving.

‘Sweetheart brooch’ or ‘badge’ is commonly used to describe this type of object.

Last time Yulia Northridge was guest soloist with the Loughborough Orchestra, she wowed the audience with Bruch's Violin Concerto, so the Orchestra members are really looking forward to her second visit. This time she will play the popular Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with its glorious slow movement and exciting outer movements! If you want to be sure of your place in the audience, it is advisable to buy a ticket in advance.

The first is a commercially made enamelled badge of the Leicestershire Yeomanry. We know it is a sweetheart badge and not an Old Comrades badge as it is fixed with a pin, women’s jackets did not have a lapel button hole.

Just as interesting is this homemade or ‘trench art’ version, donated by Helen Wright of Loughborough, a Royal Engineers brass button with the back removed to enable the wearer to wear it as a necklace and carry a photograph of her loved one with her.

Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners Over the two-month period February to March the display, Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners, has received a considerable amount of footfall in addition to some very kind comments made in the Comments Book. The Display was opened

by Francis Ellingworth son of Commander Ellingworth OIC Beaumanor during 1941/45.

In addition, a number of family members of the “Y” Listeners attended the Display and has stated by the Chairman of the Local Studies Library Volunteers, “The families appear to have had a wonderful time exchanging experiences as passed down by their parents, who served at Beaumanor and they all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to meet other families. There was, as they say, a great “vibe”.

We have been asked what happens to the Display now?

Following discussions with Beaumanor staff it has been agreed that the Display will be moved to Beaumanor with a view to being displayed at a later date.

Starting the concert is the lively Marche Slav by Tchaikovsky. This piece, which includes melodies from two Serbian songs, the Russian National Anthem and the 1812 Overture, was commissioned by the Russian Musical Society to help the Red Cross in their work with Serbian soldiers in a war against Turkey. If you don’t think you’ve heard this before, you will certainly recognise some of its melody lines.

The second half of the concert features Sibelius Symphony no.

2. Although Sibelius spent time in Italy whilst forming ideas for this work, it still resonates with a characteristic sound of the composer's Nordic - inspired music. Musical images of Finland permeate the symphony, with some beautiful themes surfacing in its tuneful lines of music.

The concert will be at Emmanuel Church, Forest Rd. on Saturday17th June 2017, starting at 7.30 p.m.

It was a Thursday afternoon and Ashley was called by his GP to come into see them ASAP as tests on a "sebaceous cyst" in his neck had showed something unexpected. I left work and headed to London - and so it began... Suspected CANCER. After initial tests and weeks of waiting, the original diagnosis was Sarcoma. However, the Dr's were still not 100% sure as to what type of disease it was. Biopsies, Bone Marrow Tests, Scans, you name it he had it. It was around 3 months of anxious waiting, googling every type of Sarcoma under the sun to then be told that his official diagnosis was something completely different - Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma NOS. Finally a diagnosis but not the one we wanted to hear. A Blood Cancer that is so rare and individual that there is currently not a standard treatment available - overall survival rates for this type of Lymphoma are around 20%.

After exhausting the Google database I came to the realisation that there is very little published information on T-Cell lymphomas and everything I did read wasn't very promising. This is why the work of Bloodwise and other charities such as Lymphoma Association are so important.

Ashley has to this date received 3 chemotherapy regimes (CHOP, ESHAP and IVE) all of which have failed to get him into the remission he needs for His Bone Marrow Transplant. He has spent a number of weeks in hospital with life threatening infections and I've had many sleepless nights and trains to be besides his hospital bed. He has also had intensive Radiotherapy and just when we thought we were getting somewhere, results from his scan showed that it had spread to his bones, liver and lymph nodes across his lymphatic system. It took 8 months to get Ashley a diagnosis and although the NHS has been fantastic, this shows that there needs to be more research into these cancers.

It has been the most difficult year of my life especially after losing my Grandma to cancer 3 years ago. I often think to myself why us? What have we done to deserve this? Ashley is not only my boyfriend but he is also my best friend, and faced with the possibility of losing him is heartbreaking. This should be the time of our lives where we live, and travel the world. We shouldn't be sitting in hospital rooms waiting on results to determine whether we will have the rest of our lives together.

Ashley is currently on a trial, which is funded by charities such as Bloodwise. We are faced by a real possibility that all treatment options will run out and it is so important that we can raise money to fund more trials like this in the hope of finding a cure - not just for Ashley but for everyone one else facing the same reality.

Ashley has always remained positive (even when his beloved hair fell out!) and has been there for me when I’ve not been as strong as he has. His family and friends have been amazing and a big support unit for him. I am now running my first half marathon around London to try and raise money to show my support to everyone in need of help and for those trying to help.

I won't give up on him or his fight...That's why I am running for Bloodwise.

Royal Observer Corps (ROC) Bunker & WWII Aircraft Post

There is an open day on the 2, 3 & 4 June 2017, between 10.15am to 4.30pm, except lunchtime on the 3rd, in Stoke Golding, Leicestershire. Access is from Wykin Lane along the footpath to the left of the new cemetery and will be signposted on the day.

The Stoke Golding nuclear monitoring post, known as George 2, was a master post, opening in 1960 and closing in 1991 following the end of the Cold War. It is one of 19 secret bunkers across Leicestershire.

The Even Bigger Big Knit Continues Let’s Keep Knitting!

The re-launched Big Knit 2017 is now in full swing but Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland. is facing a huge challenge and need even more help to create as many little woolly hats as possible for Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit before 17th July 2017 with an increased local target of 52,000 over that period!

So far we have received just 6,500.

Knitters in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are being called upon to create little hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles, which will be sold in stores nationwide from November 2017. For each behatted smoothie sold, innocent will donate 25p to help Age UK fund national and local winter projects.

Garden Screening

Bespoke Trellis

We’re finally seeing some sunshine and warmth after a long cold spring. My own garden is filling out nicely with lush foliage and plenty of colourful blooms.

My boundary fences have had a spruce up with a fresh coat of paint and the privet hedges are looking smart after on early trim. Increasingly often I’m being contacted by home owners who are overlooked by neighbours and would like more privacy. I find that new build homes are often overlooked from all sides and can have as many as 5 neighbouring properties having a clear view into the garden and through windows.

There are several options I recommend for screening in such circumstances. The style of the garden, level of maintenance required and the budget are all things I take into account when selecting the right option for a garden design plan.

Pleached Tree

Timber fencing and trellis: Typical low screening options which most of us have in the garden to surround our property.

Usually they will provide screening from 3-6ft high and can be topped with additional trellis to give another 12-18 inches of height.

‘Off the shelf’ fencing/trellis is a cheap option and is relatively straight forward to erect.

be erected. Using sturdy posts, bespoke trellis work can be designed and attached to give a screen above existing fencing.

The trellis work will allow some air flow so that buffeting winds do not cause the posts to move.

Climbers can be encouraged to climb up to the trellis and give further screening as well as colour and interest.

Pergolas: If adding height to the boundaries is not an option, then erecting a building such as a pergola can offer privacy within the garden itself. Clothed with climbers or with a suspended sail cloth, these will offer a secluded spot to sit and some shade from the summer sun.

Hedges: Various plants can be used for hedging and often this is the most cost effective way of screening along a boundary.

Shrubs such as Privet, Yew, Holly and Pyracantha will offer evergreen structure and privacy throughout the year. They will require trimming at least twice a year so they are not maintenance free. I avoid the use of Leylandii where possible as these can grow out of proportion and are unsightly when trimmed hard back.

Trees: For those who need to add a tall screen to the garden without impacting on the boundaries, trees are a good option. I’m often asked for evergreen trees to screen neighbouring windows, belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

but this poses a problem as many evergreen trees in the UK are either slow growing or will grow to be huge unmanageable specimens. I recommend well natured deciduous trees with a good branch structure such as Silver Birch instead.

Pleached Specimens: These are trees grown on a tall single stem with the heads trained flat on to bamboo frames to give a living screen. These are particularly useful positioned in front of fences with the framework above. Deciduous and evergreen options are available. Hornbeam, Crabapple and Photinia are popular choices. They will need regular trimming and training to keep them in good shape, so good access is required and they are an expensive option due to the time spent training the trees so not for everyone.

New Drop-In British Legion Sessions At Council Offices Former and serving Armed Forces personnel and their families can get advice at a regular drop-in session hosted

by Charnwood Borough Council and the Royal British Legion.

An adviser from the legion will be on hand at the council offices in Southfield Road, Loughborough every third Thursday of the month between 10am and midday. The first one is on Thursday, May 25.

Forces personnel, veterans and their families will be able to get advice on a range of issues including finance, grant support, pensions and other support available.

Appointments are not required.

The drop-in session will be in the Jobcentre Plus area of the council building.

The Council, which signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant in 2013, recently secured a £97,000 grant from the national Covenant Fund after leading a bid which also involved Melton and Rushcliffe borough councils.

The grant will allow the Council to appoint a development

worker to help improve understanding of issues facing military personnel in the area to improve the support available.

A key part of the role will also be to liaise with staff and personnel at the under-construction Stanford Hall Defence National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) which is on the border of all three council areas.

The Council has also supported Charnwood Armed Forces and Veterans’ Breakfast Club which meets on the second Saturday of every month at the Toby Carvery, Forest Road, in Loughborough.

Latest News From Spring has sprung and at Woodside we knew the signs even before we started to notice the new leaves on the trees or the birds singing and getting ready to build their nests! You see we have a problem which seems to get earlier and more dramatic at this time of the year. Kittens! Okay so yes they are sweet... and cute... and lovely.....

But the thing is there are too many being born and not enough people wanting to adopt them.

The figures are quite astounding.

Did you know that an average cat can have 1-8 kittens per litter and 2-3 litters per year? During her productive life, one un-neutered female cat could have more than 100 kittens. Without neutering, a single pair of cats and their kittens could produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years!

The figures however mask the health risks to the sexually active cat population, whether homed or feral. This can include feline aids, leukaemia, cat-flu, infections from fight wounds which can cause serious issues for an untreated cat, not to mention the high mortality on the roads as they roam to find a mate.

So why are we finding this such a challenge at Woodside? We aren’t the only animal centre to have this difficulty but I can only describe the challenges it brings from our prospective. Early each spring numerous pregnant stray cats are handed to us and they have not been microchipped we have no way of knowing where they come from. We have space for approximately 70 cats in the cattery and have had to build up a network of fosterers who help at this point by taking these pregnant cats into their homes.

The mum is health checked and monitored during her pregnancy and our fosterers are able to assess the mum and encourage her to be more friendly towards humans – she may have been abandoned and therefore not trust us at this point. Pregnant and nursing cats need to be calm and certainly prefer being in a home as opposed to our more clinical, busy and noisy environment in the cattery. Of equal importance is that mum is able to have her kittens in safety and they grow up being used to household routines and noises and to being handled from a young age. After the vet has said they are ready to go to their forever homes, the feline family are returned to Woodside.

All of them are neutered to prevent further unwanted litters, they have been health checked and are fully – vaxed and have been treated for fleas and worms.

They are also microchipped. Mum will often be adopted with one of her kittens but generally people tend to choose the kittens first.

Woodside is hugely successful with rehoming kittens and that is fantastic. However, to put it into perspective, this leaves us battling to encourage visitors to take on the “older” cats. Unspayed females can produce their first litter after reaching sexual maturity at 4 months of age. It’s a myth that cats (and dogs for that matter) need to have a first litter.

And it’s often difficult for owners to find homes for kittens their female has. Cats make delightful pets (I know as we have 5 rescue adults) but as with all pets they need to be planned for. The fact that Woodside has so many adults looking for homes means that we have to ensure that our cats are all neutered prior to adoption.

Spring really does seem to have arrived and I know, particularly at this time of year, there are often many queries about the cutting of the grass verges across Loughborough. As I write this article the County Council is working on the second cut of the season.

By checking on www.leicestershire. gov.uk/roads-and-travel/roadmaintenance/grass-cutting it is possible to check the list of areas for which the County Council has responsibility for cutting the grass verges and the likely date of the next cut. There is also an interactive map to check who has responsibility for cutting the grass on that particular piece of land and whether a problem you might have spotted has been reported. If the length of the grass is causing a safety issue then the problem can be reported to Leicestershire County Council online.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Loughborough Churches Partnership our local churches are organising a big festival on Saturday 3rd June in Queens Park. The event will feature local music, entertainment, some great inflatables, fantastic local food stalls and an opportunity to hear from churches across Loughborough about all their community projects.

On Sunday 4th June, there will be an LCP united service at 11am.

Organised by Charnwood Arts the event runs from midday – 5pm.

Back in 2012 Loughborough station was significantly improved in preparation for the town’s involvement in the Olympics. The work included a major expansion of the station car park. It has become clear though that in spite of that expansion more parking spaces are needed. It is often the case now that those travelling mid-week have to squeeze into impractical spaces or park on the kerbs. I raised this sometime ago with both Network Rail and East Midlands Trains and I’m delighted to say that both companies acknowledged the problem and have worked together to find a solution.

The new car parking spaces will be located in an additional car park facility to the left hand side of the current entrance, on a piece of land that is currently unused

by Network Rail. Network Rail has worked with East Midlands Trains on the development of the plans that will see the extra 50 spaces opened in late summer. The additional car park will have CCTV and lighting.

Two Newfoundland Dogs Find New Homes After Makeover

By The Groom Room Two Newfoundland dogs - four year old Koda and three year old Rio have found new homes after a dramatic makeover.

The dogs came into Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicester branch of the RSPCA – along with a further Newfoundland, 8 year old Bethan, after their owner had fallen ill and could no longer take care of them.

All three were in a sorry state with long, matted coats which were causing them serious problems.

“The animals were really struggling to see, had problems with their ears and were visibly uncomfortable,” explained Kim Talbot, Animal Care Specialist at Woodside. “Their coats were so long and matted we couldn’t even carry out the neutering procedure. We knew the dogs would need professional grooming, but that it would be expensive for such large dogs.”

But a local grooming service – The Groom Room, based at Pets at Home, Fosse Park – came to the rescue, inviting the three for a much-needed pampering session.

Koda and Rio were the first to benefit from a thorough wash and trim.

“They looked amazing when they’d had their coats sorted out,” said Kim. “You could actually see what stunning dogs they are! And they just seemed so much happier.”

Koda and Rio were both were snapped up the following week and are now settling nicely into their new homes.

Bethan, who came into the centre wary of people and in need of a little more paw holding from Kim, had to wait for her pampering session. But she is now looking very fine, has been signed off by the vet and is ready for a special family to offer her a new forever home too.
