Glebe House Chief Executive, Peter Warlow stated, “Whilst general awareness of autism is much higher in recent times, research shows that there remains a lack of understanding about what it really means to live with autism, not only for the person with autism but also for those who care for them and live with them.“ He went on to say, “Whether it’s at school, within businesses or in social settings, people with autism are still misunderstood. We are asking organisations across Leicestershire, what they are doing to help raise autism awareness.“ Events include a ‘Living with Autism’ Conference on the 30th March hosted by Leicestershire Autistic Society at the NSPCC Training Centre, Leicester, followed by a worldwide initiative to ‘Light up in Blue’ as we countdown to World Autism Awareness Day. A charity event hosted by Fusion Lifestyle Loughborough will celebrate autism within the community on the 2nd April. Autism East Midlands will be hosting a ‘Pathway to Adulthood’ conference on the 25th April at Glebe House, Loughborough and Contact a Family will run a ‘Challenging Behaviour’ Workshop on the 26th April.

During the competition, which was held at the weekend, the team which comprised of Chloe Slee, Rebecca Hull and Zahra Bhojani faced

some stiff opposition. As well as being part of

the winning team Rebecca and Zahra were also recognised for their roles as Best Chair and the Best Speaker respectively. The team will now

progress to the regional finals later in the year.

Take A Ride On The Great Central Railway And Enjoy Beautiful Charnwood As LOROS Fundraiser Full Steam Ahead Returns For 2017 After such a successful debut year, LOROS’ Full Steam Ahead is returning for 2017 but this time, it’s better than ever, featuring some of the best bits from the Hospice’s other much-loved events.

Complete with a ride on the Great Central Railway and an adventure through the beautiful Charnwood countryside, Full Steam Ahead promises to be fun for all the family, taking place on Sunday 1st October.

Steam Ahead event, we knew it had had to be on the LOROS calendar again this time around.

While the concept of this year’s event remains the same, with participants taking a ride on a train and walking through the wonderful countryside, we’ve made a few exciting changes.

This year, we have three times the amount of tickets up for grabs, with 600 on offer, so even more people can enjoy our event.”

While the event is similar to last year, fundraisers at the Hospice have incorporated all the best bits from former events, Walk on the Wildside and Paws for a Cause and merged them together, to bring you Full Steam Ahead 2017.

Following such a successful debut back in 2016, raising £5,000 for the Hospice, Full Steam Ahead allows participants to choose their preferred route from Quorn Station, which will lead them to Rothley Station, where they will get the train back from.

LOROS Fundraising Co-ordinator Dave Nicklin said: “We were overwhelmed with how quickly tickets sold out for last year’s Full

The Exhibition will show the history of Building Societies and particularly The Loughborough Building Society and the twelve Loughborough businessmen who founded it. Charnwood Residents Urged To #RecycleRight A new campaign is urging Charnwood residents to #RecycleRight and help not only the environment but taxpayers’ pockets as well.

Charnwood Borough Council says more than 700 tonnes of clothes and other textiles are being put into the green wheelie bins it collects each year.

And the big issue is – the Council can’t recycle them. Instead the clothes, bedding, duvets, and even cuddly toys, are being incinerated to create energy and the process costs Charnwood council tax payers £73,000 a year.

The Council has now launched the #RecycleRight campaign to urge residents to put the right items in the right bins.

Cllr Hilary Fryer, Lead Member for Cleansing, said: “We recycle 17,000 tonnes of materials a year but we still have too much of what we call contaminated waste – the wrong items in the green recycling bins. I would encourage people as part of our #RecycleRight campaign to think before they put their recycling in the green bins. Our website can tell you exactly what can and cannot go in the green bins and we’ve refreshed the information to make it as easy as possible to understand. The big offender is clothes and textiles. I am sure people believe they are doing the right thing and the clothes will be reused, but the reality is they won’t. It’s not a service we can offer at this time and there are other fairly easy options – take textiles to a recycling bank, give them to charity, upcycle them if you can. Whatever you do, please do not put clothes in the green wheelie bins.”

The Council has in recent years offered charity bags to homeowners to put textiles in but that is being discontinued at the end of March due to a low takeup. Last year around 10 tonnes of materials were collected through the scheme and 700 tonnes of textiles still ended up in green wheelie bins.

Instead the Council is focussing on raising awareness through the #RecycleRight campaign of what can and cannot go in the council green wheelie bins.

Tackling Weeds Spring is well and truly here now and there’s plenty to be doing in the garden. There are colourful bulbs to admire, spring perennials blooming in all their glory and shots unfurling on shrubs and trees, it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy your garden. However a plague of weeds can be discouraging, so this month I thought I’d run through a few common garden and the best way to tackle them.

I’ll be looking at traditional weeds as opposed to out of control cultivated plants. There are two main types of garden weed; the annual and the perennial.

Bittercress

Annual weeds Annual weeds are those which have a one year life-cycle i.e.

Germinate, grow, flower and set seed all within one year.

They can over-winter as small immature plants and are often ephemeral – they will have several generations in one year.

A couple of the worst offenders in gardens in our area are: Groundsel - Produces seeds all year round. It is characterised by small clusters of yellow blooms on short plants which produce fluffy seeds, easily spread in the wind or my animals. Although hoeing and hand picking seedlings is effective, be sure to pick up all material from the surface of the ground as Groundsel will very easily re-root. Mulching the surface can help reduce weed germination.

germinates, flowers and sets seed very rapidly – in a matter of weeks! Short flower stems flick seed around the surrounding soil. Hoe or hand weeding at first sight before flowering will help to avoid colonisation of the ground.

Bittercress is also a problem in containers where it can go un-noticed and fill the compost surface with seeds.

Perennial weeds Perennial weeds are those which have a life-cycle longer than one year. They will germinate/ spread from a mother plant and continue to grow, develop , flower, set seed or proliferate by other means continually until they are eradicated. A few perennial weeds I most often find in my clients gardens are: Willowherb - A weed common in the wild and in gardens, the seed is spread by the wind. With attractive foliage and flowers it can easily be missed when weeding. It is shallow rooted which makes it easy to hoe or hand weed but ensure every piece is taken as it can easily re-root.

Small glossy leaved plant-lets can over-winter in borders, pots and nooks & crannies. Remove them in early spring before the plant can grow larger.

Bindweed - such a problem in the garden environment, it’s twining stems can swamp flowers and shrubs in borders. Untangling the stems from wanted plants and applying a weedkiller such as Glyphosate is the most effective way if treating this thug, but do belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

ensure the weedkiller doesn’t touch anything you want to keep. In areas of dense colonisation, digging down to remove the root system will be necessary and the only option for badly infected borders.

Dandelion - The most well recognised garden weed, it is easy to identify by it’s large yellow blooms and seed ‘clocks’.

Best eradicated using a systemic weedkiller which will kill the whole plant including the root.

If weeding by hand it is easy to leave sections of root in the ground with will re-grow another plant. The seed is wind blown and soon colonises borders, lawns and containers so It is important to stop the plant from setting seed.

Remove flowers in bloom and do not leave them lying around or place them in the compost bin as they can still produce seed.

N.B Beware that systemic weedkillers will have an effect on any plant they come in contact with so care should be used if applying within established borders or near to lawns.

Manufacture instructions should be followed with regards to application rates and health and safety precautions.

I hope I’ve encouraged you to get out and tackle the weeds in your garden. Next month I’ll be looking at compost, manure and soils – what to use and where.

Store Raises Over £3,000 For Local Animal Charity Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicester branch of the RSPCA – has been presented with a cheque for £3,106.73 by the Pets at Home, Fosse Park store.

Employees and customers raised the money through their ‘Santa Paws’ appeal which ran during December. Nationally, the appeal which aims to support rescue centers, particularly over the festive period, raised an astonishing £1,064,064.86 with customers making donations in stores, online and by text.

As part of the Fosse Park store’s charity appeal, Deputy Store Manager Jamie Sands also made the ultimate sacrifice by shaving his hair and beard. Three years of growth was ceremoniously shorn by their in-store pet groomers, the Groom Room.

The Green Gym at Gorse Hill Covert, Loughborough is transforming the local area ready for spring.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Cabinet Member for Open Spaces, said: “We started the Green Gym last year and it’s been fantastic to see how many people have joined so far. We currently have 10 volunteers who have learnt skills like cutting back trees and planting new ones, sowing seeds and building pathways. It’s a great way for people to get some exercise and fresh air but it’s also an opportunity to look after your mental wellbeing while helping to improve the local area.”

Volunteers have been working hard to get the area looking its best in time for the warmer weather.

The gym is run by Charnwood Borough Council and offers free sessions for residents to learn practical conservation skills and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

At Gorse Covert the volunteers have been creating paths so that local residents can walk through the area, and they have installed bird boxes and cleared fallen trees.

Helen Thomas, 45 from Loughborough has been a member of the gym for over a year and said: “I suffer from depression, and one of the recommendations to help was to get outdoors. I saw a flyer for the Green Gym and decided it looked like more fun than a regular one!

Settlement Agreements – What are they? Should you sign?

In the majority of cases, when employment relationships end they do so amicably.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and there will be occasions when employees are entitled to compensation.

Sometimes it will be necessary to pursue a claim for compensation through an Employment Tribunal, although it may be possible to avoid the need for a claim by reaching a negotiated settlement with an employer. In such situations, employees will often be asked to sign a formal document, known as a Settlement Agreement (formerly called a Compromise Agreement).

By signing a Settlement Agreement, an employee will waive their right to bring most claims against their employer; as such, they can be very useful to employers and it is usual for an employee to be incentivised by payments that exceed the amounts they are entitled to under their contract, or legislation.

For this reason Settlement Agreements are not uncommon in redundancy situations, if an employee is receiving a redundancy payment that is higher than the statutory amount.

The waiver is clearly significant, and so a Settlement Agreement will only be valid if the employee has received independent advice on its nature and effect from a relevant adviser; it is usual for an employer to at least contribute to the employee’s costs of obtaining the advice, given the benefit of the waiver to the employer.

A key consideration for the adviser is whether the proposed payments at least equal the amounts the employee may be entitled to receive; if they do not, the employee can decide whether to: • sign the agreement (and provide the waiver); or • ask the employer to pay more; or • decline the agreement and bring a claim for the sums which the employer is trying to avoid paying.

There will usually be other issues covered by a Settlement Agreement, including confidentiality, the return of company property, and the tax treatment of the payments. An employer may also take the opportunity to affirm, or introduce, restrictive covenants; these are clauses which can affect what an employee can do in terms of future employment.

In view of the significance of the waiver, and the additional elements that can be contained in a Settlement Agreement, it is essential to obtain professional advice on the impact of signing, in order to make an informed decision.

I want to pay tribute to all the local residents who turned out on a rainy afternoon to show their support for the citizens in Syria who are suffering and those who have been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge. The UK is the second largest donor of aid to help those suffering in the conflict in Syria and that reflects the generosity of the British people.

In addition we have several families from Syria now living locally and it is a positive thing to be able to offer them shelter, peace and stability.

Many of you will be aware of the consultation which has now started into the future of children’s heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. I know many local families have benefited from the expertise of the staff at Glenfield and are appalled at the prospect of the surgery unit being moved.

I agree with them and cannot believe this has been proposed again. Tens of thousands of local people have signed a petition against the closure. I have been doing some work on how significant a problem this is elsewhere and the number of such attacks across the country.

Earlier this month the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, unveiled the Spring Budget. I sent out a newsletter to local businesses about the main points in the Budget. If you are not on my mailing list but would like your name to be added then please let me know. As well as confirming that the personal allowance for taxpayers will rise to £11,500 from next month there was also an extra £2billion for social care and support for new vocational T-level qualifications. I know that some local businesses and retailers are also concerned about changes to their business rates.

The Chancellor did announce a package of support for those who are seeing their bills going up. If this affects you please do let me know. I met the Chancellor recently to discuss this and can do so again about particular cases.

Watermead Challenge 2017 This year’s Watermead Challenge charity run is being held at 7pm on Tuesday 11th July 2017.

There are the usual five and three mile courses. Race Director, Chris Battye commented “ The two distances appeal to a range of abilities from novice runners to the more experienced. The flat lakeside course is popular as it offers the chance to achieve a personal best time.”

This year’s proceeds will be shared between the Leicester Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) and Loughborough based Mosaic Disability Services.
