Love Loughborough is supporting a local Dog Show by helping it to be relocated into the Town Centre, due to the show outgrowing the field it is normally located in.

Way Of The Wyrd Border Morris Open Practice Sessions If you are looking for a new activity to do, Border Morris dancing offers an unusual but fun way to keep fit! Way of the Wyrd Border Morris welcomes new dancers and musicians; the autumn is a good time to come and have a go. Practices take place 7 - 9pm to the Old Mission Hut, Storer Road, part of Roseberry St. Peters community centre. These are suitable for everyone, although under 16s should be accompanied.

The dances are in the style of the Border tradition from villages along the England / Wales border region. This tradition has some distinctive characteristics - the dances have simple stepping and are mostly danced with sticks in an energetic and enthusiastic way.

The dancers wear ‘tatters’ in the side colours of black and purple with touches of silver and paint their faces too!

Way of the Wyrd have now danced out and about in Loughborough for five years, their aim is to promote and develop this tradition of dancing and encourage more people to be involved. They enjoy creating their own dances to celebrate Loughborough’s past and present with ‘The Sock’ referring to the

hosiery industry and the ‘Ned Ludd dance’ to commemorate the Luddites’ attack on Heathcote’s knitting machines 200 years ago as well as their famous ‘Thomas Cook Temperance dance’ about Cook’s first day trip by steam train to Loughborough!

On Saturday 17th September Way of the Wyrd were very pleased to help Bare Bones Border Morris celebrate their 30th anniversary along with Lady Bay Revellers, Ripley Morris men, Anstey Royal Chalfont also Bakanalia and Black Annis from Leicester. It was a great day of dancing and wonderful to see so much variety in Loughborough.

Jumbo Jumble Sale At Shepshed It’s that time of year again when the people of St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed ask you to ‘Delve in your drawers, Search your sheds, Clean out your cupboards, Wade in your wardrobes and Attack the attic’.

Bric-a-brac, ‘kitchenalia’, books, clothes, tools, china and glass are all acceptable providing they are in good condition.

Once again your unwanted goods are required to sell at their Jumbo Jumble Sale to be held in the Church Hall, Church Gate from 10.00am until 1.00pm on Saturday 22nd October. Items may be brought to the hall on the previous day (Friday 21st) between 2.00pm and 4.00pm, and from 6.30pm until 7.30pm.

Refreshments will be available, and fun can be had trying on in the nearly new ‘department’, where a mirror will be placed for use. It is planned to have a children’s section with good condition clothes, buggies, car seats, high-chairs, toys etc..

Every year there is a huge quantity of goods remaining after the event, which is gladly accepted by a worthy cause. This year the charity is the children’s hospice ‘Rainbows,’ for sale in their shops.

Nothing is wasted! Do come along!

Every year we hold our dog show so we can invite our rehomed dogs but also for all dog lovers to celebrate owning a dog. I am very grateful for all the help and support they have given me and looking forward to our biggest dog show we have done so far.”

There will be lots to do at the Dog Show for all of the family.

You can register your dog into the show from 10am-12noon.

Judging classes start at 12 noon and cost £2 per class, per dog.

Dog classes include Best Rescue, Best Pedigree, Best Mixed Breed, Prettiest Female, Handsomest Male, Best Puppy (under 1 year), Best Veteran (8 and over), Waggiest Tail, Look alike (Dog that looks like owner) and Dog Fancy Dress. Don't miss out on have a go dog agility, where there is a chance of winning a trophy for The Best Agility Dog. The shops, cafes and bars will be open on the day and there’s free parking all day at Granby Street car park, courtesy of Love Loughborough and Charnwood Borough Council.

Karl Goetz, a German medallist, regarded the event as stemming directly from the bewildering irresponsibility of the British Government and the Cunard Steamship Company in allowing the return of the liner from New York to Liverpool at a time of intense U-boat activity. Content with the justice of Germany’s cause, Goetz cast a satirical medallion, which mocked the Allied obsession with ‘business’ However, he made a serious mistake; he got the date of the sinking wrong – the medallion carried the date ‘5. MAI 1915’.

British Intelligence seized upon the medallion to give a new lease of life to the propaganda impact of the original sinking, and the date mistake made easier their efforts to exploit it for their own purposes.

Some 300,000 British copies of Goetz’s original medallion were made, the logic behind the duplication was straightforward.

The date error could be used to imply ‘advance planning’ and that the fate of the Lusitania was sealed before her departure from New York, her sinking being premeditated and pre-arranged –The British were happy to further mislead public opinion about the

The German Luger was the most famous wartime pistol although the British Webley (We have one) was perhaps not so far behind.

Some two million Luger 9mm pistols were manufactured during the WW1 and although primarily issued to officers (since the pistol continued to be viewed primarily as an officer's weapon) it was also issued to soldiers engaged in a wide variety of tasks.

On 7 May 1915, the Cunard liner Lusitania was hit by a torpedo. It was struck without warning and sank in under twenty minutes. Of the nearly 2,000 passengers on board, 1,201 men, women and children were lost’.

The sinking of the Lusitania, like the invasion of Belgium, was regarded by the Allies as a crime symbolising the degree of ‘frightfulness’ Germany was prepared to perpetuate in her pursuit of victory. The event inspired an abundance of antiGerman propaganda but it was a privately produced medallion, the work of a German medallist that was to provide British Intelligence with the basis for an impressively successful anti-German propaganda campaign.

The British replicas were sold at a shilling each, in an attractive cardboard presentation box with a hinged lid. The proceeds were directed to St Dunstan’s Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Hostels and the Red Cross.

What's New Mr Terry Hall of Stanley Village.

Derby has passed to us the framed Death Plaque of Harry Cutts who died on 23 July 1918 aged just 19. He is buried at Bertrancourt Military Cemetery.

Harry had lived with his family

on Ashby Road, Loughborough before joining the Leicesters' and then the Lancashire Fusiliers. The photographs show Harry in civilian clothes before joining up and the very poignant image of his mother visiting his grave, probably taken soon after the war ended and before the dead were re-interred in military cemeteries.

I had a wonderful morning out on the canal with the Peter Le Marchant Trust last month. I joined a group from Vista Melton Mowbray for a very sunny trip from Loughborough to Normanton on Soar – and they even let me have a turn at the helm. It was a real privilege to meet the volunteers and staff from the Trust. For over thirty five years the Trust has provided day trips and holidays on waterways for people of all ages with any kind of disability or serious illness. To find out more about booking or volunteering please visit www. peterlemarchanttrust.co.uk Although it hasn’t created quite the same national excitement as London 2012 I know that many of us have been watching and enjoying the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio over the last few weeks. We have had a number of competitors who live and train locally, many of them associated with Loughborough University and Loughborough College taking part and winning medals. If the University was a country we would have finished 17th in the Olympics medal table and students from Loughborough College won four medals, including a gold.

Closer to home I was pleased to be able to attend the first landlord forum held by the

University to discuss issues of mutual interest with landlords in the town who rent properties to students. This was hosted by the University and attended by the Vice-Chancellor as well as officers from Charnwood Council and the University’s community wardens. I am looking forward to meeting the new Student Union Executive shortly.

Monday 10th October is World Mental Health Day. I know this is always well supported locally by interested groups and individuals.

The Loughborough Wellbeing Project will be holding a ‘Well Well Well’ café at Trinity Methodist Church between midday and 4pm with the support of the Mark and Spencer’s “Spark Something Good” team. Please contact me if you would like to get involved.

JONATHAN MORGAN Loughborough Comes Up Roses Again Yet again Loughborough has triumphed in the ‘Bloom’ awards, winning ‘Best Small City’ at the East Midlands Awards this month, amongst a spread of additional medals to support its success.

Harry and Pat Cook rightly received a gold award for best residential garden, with further gold awards for Queen’s Park, and the Council’s contractors Quadron and Serco, who work so hard to make the town’s open spaces look so green. In addition, Cobden School received a well-earned silver for best school garden in recognition of the hard work from the children and adults this year.

Loughborough is fast becoming the town to beat in the region, as well as competing internationally – we should soon find out, via video link with the Canadian host city for this year’s international ‘Bloom’ competition, whether Loughborough will have any more trophies to add to its growing collection.

I know that everyone involved in Loughborough in Bloom is very proud of the recognition that the awards provide, and that residents’ benefit from the hard work that so many put in each year to make the town look so special.

Have Your Say On Town Centre Improvements Charnwood Council has asked for your views on its plans to improve Devonshire Square, Bedford Square and Wards End. You have until the 26th October to view the proposals on the Council’s website (Charnwood.gov.uk) and to say what you think should be the focus for any changes to these areas. The Council has set aside up to £780,000 to spend on improving the edges of the town’s shopping centre, to retain as much

on-street parking as possible, whilst creating more disabled parking bays.

Further ideas have been proposed for your thoughts, such as widening the pavements to allow easier access and creating a feature at Bedford Square (such a s a fountain or sculpture) to make the area more interesting and attractive to shoppers, whilst making sure that any changes still accommodate the annual fair and other events.

Please do have a look at the proposals and submit your comments to the Council before 26th October.

Loughborough Had A Lot To Be Proud About At Rio I’ve lost count of the number of times that people tweeted references to where Loughborough would be in the medal tables if it was its own country (the answer seems to be – surprisingly high!). Not only was the University the most successful in the UK for medals, but also one of the top 7 in the world for golds, whilst Loughborough College was the world’s most successful college bar none.

As Vice Chair of Loughborough College, I recently had the pleasure to meet the incredibly charismatic Melanie Marshall, not only is she the coach to gold medal swimmer (and Loughborough University based) Adam Peaty, and one of the most decorated swimmers in her own right at any Commonwealth Games, but she is also, most importantly, a graduate from Loughborough College.

The Loughborough thread runs through every part of UK sport, and is the backbone and beating heart of almost every one of our national sporting bodies, we all have something to be very proud of.

Official Unveiling Of Revamped Shortcliffe Park A £125,000 revamp of Shortcliffe Park in Loughborough has been officially unveiled on September 14.

The ribbon was cut at a short ceremony this morning and the area now boasts a skate park and ball court which have already been popular with residents flocking to use the facilities.

Footpaths and seats have also been added to the park off Old Ashby Road, and goalposts and log seating are on the way.

The work was carried out by Charnwood Borough Council and followed a consultation with a number of different groups including young skateboarders who live locally.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Lead Member for Leisure and Open Spaces, said: “The park looks fantastic and has been completely transformed.

“It’s lovely to see people enjoying the new facilities, particularly the skate park which was one of the main requests from residents”.

Councillor Dr Julie Bradshaw MBE said: “As a local councillor for Loughborough Ashby Ward, I am

delighted that the skate park has finally happened.

“It has been the result of four years of hard work and commitment.

In 2012 residents contacted me about problems and young people spoke to me telling me there was nowhere to go or nothing to do.

“After many meetings, which the young people attended with Craig Jordan and Tracey Riley of the Ashby Road Estate Community Association (ARECA), the project developed. Various partners came on board as a result.

“I am really excited at the thumbs up that local residents, shop owners and young people are giving the skate park.”

Young people from the National Citizen Service (NCS) also helped with the refurbishment of the park by painting benches, pruning trees, planting and painting a youth centre. The work was carried out as part of the NCS’ social action projects and was completed using free materials sourced by the volunteers.

The work was funded by £57,000 from section 106 agreements following development in the area, a £15,000 donation from Loughborough University’s Special Projects Fund and £53,100 from SUEZ communities Trust, formerly known as SITA UK.

Now is a good time to consider whether your garden has been up to scratch this year. Many of us are short of time these days with juggling work, family and all of the day to day chores we have to complete before we have time to sit back and relax.

Start again with the planting – this gives the opportunity to remove thuggish and overgrown plants and start a fresh with plants chosen to give interest throughout the year without high demands on time. Clearing out a border allows invasive weeds to be tackled thoroughly once and for all before the new plants are added. Well worth the work to get a new easily tamed look.

Look for plant varieties which are repeat flowerers so you get a long period of colour without much effort – e.g Geranium Rozanne will flower from June – September without any deadheading or trimming.

From my experience it is often the lawn which requires most care during the spring and summer as it grows abundantly and needs a trim every week or two. Some planting demands deadheading and regular trimming to keep it in shape and then hedges need a haircut once or twice during the year to keep them looking at their best. For some it is weeding which takes up so much of their time and it is difficult to keep on top of the weeds if they are

Membrane and a covering mulch of wood chip or gravel stops weeds growing in newly planted areas. Lay the membrane on the prepared soil and cut crosses through to enable planting. Cover with mulch and water the plants well. A word of warning through – Black birds love to flick through wood chip and bark looking for insects and it often makes it’s way on to the lawn causing difficulties during mowing.

A Family Affair At Grange Park Homeowners at the thriving Grange Park development in Loughborough often comment on how much they enjoy living in a brand new William Davis house, but for one family, they liked it so much that when the time came to move, they simply chose a larger house on the development!

Needing more space for their growing family, Clare and Luke Bancroft, their four children and goldendoodle, Poppy moved from a three bedroom Lyne to a brand new, four bedroom detached home, known as the Solent.

“We really liked living at Grange Park and felt very settled in the neighbourhood,” explains Clare.

Views Sought On Proposals To Improve Loughborough Town Centre A consultation has been launched over proposals to improve part of Loughborough town centre.

Charnwood Borough Council has unveiled plans to make Bedford Square, Devonshire Square and Wards End more attractive to shoppers by widening pavements and improving public areas.

The Council is clear that these proposals are a starting point for discussion. No funding is yet in place but agreement of a scheme will be essential to secure opportunities for investment as and when they become available.

Furthering the family connection, Clare’s parents have also moved to Grange Park, relocating from Bristol to be closer to the family.

David and Jeanne Simpson bought a five bedroom Lambourn and are equally enjoying life at the popular, edge-of-town development.

Clare added: “It’s been great having Mum & Dad nearby, and they’re getting on well in the local community – the whole family are now neighbours at Grange Park!”

William Davis Appoints Nine New Apprentices Housebuilder, William Davis has taken nine new apprentices on to its award-winning training scheme.

Joining the Loughborough-based company are bricklayers, Callum Gamble and Max Harrington; joiners, Daniel Axten and Joshua Wallis; plumbers, Jacob Keogh and Isaac Harper; electricians, Sam Hubbard and Joe Hill; and quantity surveyor, Lewis Ingram. Each of the new recruits will undertake a three or four year apprenticeship to achieve an NVQ Level 3 or HNC with on-site training being supported by academic studies at Leicester College or Loughborough College.

As part of their first week’s training, the new apprentices spent time on William Davis’ flagship development at Grange Park, Loughborough with site manager, Simon Smith.

“Our aim is to give the new apprentice intake opportunities to learn right from the outset, and taking them onto a live building of shoppers and pedestrians and permit some businesses to spill into the street without causing an obstruction.

Gary added: “Apprentices have proven to be an invaluable resource of talent so over the next four years, the in-house apprentice masters and I will guide our new recruits to develop into confident, skilled and qualified professionals with bright futures.”

Following completion of their induction, which included learning about the construction industry, site health and safety procedures, equipment and tools, the new apprentices are all now working with their mentors on the company’s sites across the Midlands. would be included in Devonshire Square. The estimated cost of the scheme is £780,000, not including a water feature. As well urging people to take part in the consultation, the Council is talking directly to individual stakeholders including businesses, taxi drivers and market traders.
