Rumpelstiltskin is one of nine Book Benches installed around Loughborough town centre to celebrate children’s illustrated literature festival in October Loughborough has welcomed a new literary landmark with the installation of a unique Book Bench in the town centre. The new, hand-made Book Bench features fairytale and Ladybird classic, Rumpelstiltskin and celebrates the town’s literary heritage and link to Ladybird books, ahead of this year’s Loogabarooga Festival of children’s illustrated literature from 19-24 October 2016.

Rumpelstiltskin was chosen as the theme for the new Loogabarooga Festival Book Bench by a public vote and has been installed in the Baxter Gate complex in Loughborough. It joins the eight other book benches that were a popular feature of last year’s Loogabarooga Festival and were produced by local artists.

The Benches feature cover artwork from some of the nation’s favourite Ladybird children’s stories including Shopping with Mother, Cinderella and Bunnikin’s Picnic Party. They will be installed in the run up to, and throughout the duration of the Festival.

Hilary Fryer, Charnwood Borough Council's Cabinet member for Open Spaces and Leisure, said: “The Book Benches were a huge hit with people last year and I am so pleased we are adding to the collection. They are bright, colourful and a perfect celebration of Loughborough’s connection to the iconic Ladybird books.

“The Rumpelstiltskin Bench will be a wonderful addition to the town and the Loogabarooga Festival.”

The Loogabarooga Festival of

children’s illustrated literature is returning to Loughborough for a second year from 19-24 October and will include many new highlight events for families and children who love reading at venues across Loughborough.

This year’s programme will include free creative drop-in workshops, storytelling sessions, advice on how to write and illustrate your own book, with appearances from some of the nation’s favourite children’s authors and illustrators.

Performers, workshops and exhibitions at Loogabarooga Festival 2016 include Michael Rosen, best-selling children’s author and poet, and former Children’s Laureate; comedian, entertainer and writer, Julian Clary reading from his latest book, The Bolds To The Rescue; and the Illustrating Harry Potter exhibition at Charnwood Museum, an illustrated reimagining of the blockbuster classic, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Tickets for all of the free and paid events can be booked online at www.loogabarooga.com.

Copies of the free programme will be available to collect from Loughborough Town Hall, Charnwood Borough Council offices, Charnwood Museum and venues across Loughborough and Charnwood.

A young man, George Maynard, has made us this model of a WW1 German trench. We hope to install some flashing lights and gunfire noises (if we can find someone with the right skills) but alongside it, we want to display some 'battlefield relics' bits and pieces that have been picked up from the WW1 battlefields.

New Notice Board We have a new notice board.

What’s New At The Museum The gentleman who gave us the bomb selector, Mr Bowdery, also donated a 'Lusitania Medallion' I was a little disappointed when he told me it was a 'copy' however I was to discover that the story surrounding the copies is even more interesting than the 'real thing' On 7 May 1915, the Cunard liner Lusitania was hit by a torpedo. It was struck without warning and sank in under twenty minutes. Of the nearly 2,000 passengers on board, 1,201 men, women and children were lost’.

The sinking of the Lusitania, like the invasion of Belgium, was regarded by the Allies as a crime symbolising the degree of ‘frightfulness’ Germany was prepared to perpetuate in her pursuit of victory. The event inspired an abundance of antiGerman propaganda but it was a privately produced medallion, the work of a German medallist that was to provide British Intelligence with the basis for an impressively successful anti-German propaganda campaign.

Karl Goetz, a German medallist, regarded the event as stemming directly from the bewildering irresponsibility of the British Government and the Cunard Steamship Company in allowing the return of the liner from New York to Liverpool at a time of intense U-boat activity. Content with the justice of Germany’s cause, Goetz cast a satirical medallion, which mocked the Allied obsession with ‘business’ However, he made a serious mistake; he got the date of the sinking wrong – the medallion carried the date ‘5. MAI 1915’.

British Intelligence seized upon the medallion to give a new lease of life to the propaganda impact of the original sinking, and the date mistake made easier their efforts to exploit it for their own purposes.

Some 300,000 British copies of Goetz’s original medallion were made, the logic behind the duplication was straightforward.

The date error could be used to imply ‘advance planning’ and that the fate of the Lusitania was sealed before her departure from New York, her sinking being

premeditated and pre-arranged –The British were happy to further mislead public opinion about the status of Goetz’s medallion. They blurred the traditional distinction between ‘medal’ as an official award in respect of some act of gallantry or special service and ‘medallion’, regarded as an unofficial work of art produced for sale and profit.

They also contrived to represent Goetz’s satirical censure of the British as if it were patriotic German celebration by focussing attention on the caption-like text and its date, rather than on the slogan-like text incorporated in the designs. British propaganda thus originated the myth that Goetz’s ‘Lusitania Medallion’ was an official commemorative of the sinking and in the process implied national approval for the act itself.

The British replicas were sold at a shilling each, in an attractive cardboard presentation box with a hinged lid. The proceeds were directed to St Dunstan’s Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Hostels and the Red Cross.

I’ve been visiting lots of our local schools recently included Sacred Heart Catholic Academy and Beacon Academy. I was pleased to meet the School Parliament at Sacred Heart and then to take part in a Year 6 lesson and answer questions about my job as Loughborough’s MP. At Beacon Academy I was pleased to have a tour of the school and see some of the newly revamped classrooms, hear about their positive plans for the future and meet the Year 5 and 6 pupils who also quizzed me very eloquently about democracy and elections. All the pupils I met were a real credit to their schools.

Loughborough resident Donna Compton is organising a charity concert on Saturday 22nd October at Loughborough Town Hall to raise awareness of Breast Cancer. All profits from the concert will go to charity. The concert is inspired by Donna’s blog www.just-get-rid.co.uk after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

The scheme is now offering supported internships for young people in need of particular support and mentoring. Don’t forget the Loogabarooga Children’s Illustrated Literature Festival taking place over half-term. I was pleased to join Leicestershire Promotions, Charnwood Council and the Business Improvement District in unveiling the latest book bench.

The design had been chosen by the public and it turned out to be illustrations from the Ladybird Rumpelstiltskin book. The bench can be found outside Cineworld.

Finally, congratulations to Delice Deli and Café on Baxtergate who, for the third year running, have been nominated for the Best Midlands Deli in the BBC Good Food awards. It is great to see a local business being recognised in this way. Good luck to them when the judges visit!

Great Central Railway’s Winning Designs

I was very pleased to be invited

by GCR’s new Chief Exec, Andy Munro, to the revealing of the final six designs for their new museum, to be built adjacent to the Leicester North station.

Whilst the building itself will be just outside the borough, the new museum will enable Charnwood’s own railway to showcase its prized processions – beautifully restored, working steam locos in situ, and under steam through the Soar Valley, on what is the country’s only mainline heritage railway. GCR is working with the National Railway Museum at York to effectively be its ‘working arm’, allowing people to witness our fascinating railway history in motion rather than as a highly polished static exhibit.

The six finalists on display were the result of a great deal of imagination and skill from some of the country’s best and brightest architects and engineers – as an architect myself, I was impressed at how creative the designs were, and how well many of them matched GCR’s brief and challenges. Having talked to many people during the launch event, I think most had their own preferred design from the six, but all agreed that any one of the proposals would make the new railway museum a national landmark in its own right.

proportion of residents – this month’s relates to mental health provision across the City, Rutland and County, and if you are one of the thousands either directly affected by poor mental health, or have a family member or friend who is – then you’ll appreciate that this is a very important issue.

The three NHS clinical groups, with the support of the County, Rutland and City Councils, are proposing to introduce mental health resilience and recovery hubs in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, with the aim of improving services for patients.

Currently, £1.5million is spent each year by the three councils on supporting a range of mental health services provided by voluntary sector organisations, although these are not always joined up or coordinated.

The consultation aims to seek residents’ views on the proposed changes, and I would strongly urge you to look at the proposals and to respond to the consultation before 4th December. The relevant documents are being hosted by Leicester City Council and can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/goo65rL

Let There Be Light

Leicestershire’s school holidays are notorious for always being out of step with the rest of the country (we like to be unique!), but it does mean that for many children locally they get to experience and celebrate the lead up to Diwali whilst on holiday.

The festival of light is on 30th October this year, but Loughborough’s lights came to life on 16th October, illuminating the Town Hall and shopping areas just at the point when the evenings are becoming dark.

The festival is followed by the fantastic fair (9th-12th November) and then the Christmas lights come alive on 27th November – and so - with a flicker of a lightbulb, it’s almost 2017.

A magical spell will be cast over Charnwood Museum with the arrival of a new Harry Potter exhibition. The display will feature illustrations of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, which has been reimagined by illustrator Jim Kay.

We are really pleased to confirm that Age UK and innocent are teaming up again for the 13th year of our Big Knit partnership.

Well sit back and enjoy this newer version, with twists you will never have thought of, and new characters that will bring a whole new story alive before your eyes.

We’re excited to announce that innocent would like to promote our next campaign as the biggest Big Knit ever so that we can build on what has already been a very successful partnership.

Watch carefully for the “sting” in the tail. I don’t want to say too much about what this might mean, I want you to be intrigued and excited and eager to come and find out for yourself.

The knitting phase is going to be a bit different – we’ve been tasked to put little woolly hats on 2 million smoothie bottles nationwide, which will be sold by retailers in November 2017.

So twice as many hats, but nearly twice as long to knit them!

For those of you who return to see our performances year after year, you know exactly what to expect, chaos, laughter, singing, applause, boos, and the odd mistake (made on purpose of course). LOL. If this is your first time watching HATS, then you are in for a treat.

This is good news for us and our army of knitters!

Our hat target will be 47,000,

which we will need to submit by 31 January 2017.

We will then be able to continue knitting from 1 February until summer 2017 (exact date TBC) to knit the same number of hats again.

Then all hats will go on sale in November 2017.

It also means that our knitters can keep knitting all year round, as we’ve heard from lots of them that they would like to keep knitting hats throughout the year.

Victorian Christmas Market At Shepshed A warm friendly atmosphere welcomes those who come to Shepshed’s Victorian Christmas Market in St Botolph’s Church Hall on Saturday 26th November. The Hall will be ‘decked with boughs of holly,’ with stall holders in appropriate dress.

Santa has it in his diary to arrive just after the opening at 10.00am, carrying small gifts for the children --- he is hoping to be as busy as in 2015, when he spoke to over seventy little ones!

This event is one at which visitors can definitely do some of their Christmas shopping, with a wide range of new goods for sale, including some beautifully hand crafted items. There will be the usual prize winning opportunities with a Grand Prize Draw, and a ‘prize every time tombola’, Books, jewellery, toys, Christmas decorations, homemade cakes

and preserves will feature on other stalls.

Refreshments will be on sale from the time the Market opens, with many people choosing to stay for lunch --- in the past bacon butties and lemon meringue pies have been great favourites!

There is no charge for entry, or car parking, and the Market closes at 2.00pm. Proceeds are for the work of the Church in the community of Shepshed.

St Botolph’s Church ‘ corner’ of Shepshed will be very busy that weekend. As well as the Market, Shepshed Rotary Club are holding their Christmas Tree Festival over the three days in the Church.

His artwork has been published in a new illustrated edition of the book which was released last year. The display will feature original work including sketches, oils and digital prints. There will also be a variety of merchandise available to buy, from copies of the illustrated book to Harry Potter soft toys and stationary.

The exhibition is part of the Loogabarooga Festival which opens on October 19 and celebrates children’s illustrated literature. Over the course of six days, the festival offers fun for all the family including a series of author talks, workshops and events at venues in Loughborough.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council said: “It’s so exciting to have the exhibition here as part of the Loogabarooga Festival.

Harry Potter is such a well-loved story by children and adults alike, so it’s wonderful to be able to experience the magical world brought to life through these illustrations.”

Councillor Richard Blunt, the county council’s cabinet member for museums, said: “This is a really exciting exhibition which we’ve been delighted to secure from Seven Stories. It demonstrates the tremendous value of our strong local partnerships as we continue to support museums across the county.”

The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 15, and runs until Sunday, January 8, 2017. Performers, workshops and exhibitions Loogabarooga include Michael Rosen, best-selling children’s author and poet, and former Children’s Laureate; comedian, entertainer and writer, Julian Clary reading from his latest book, The Bolds To The Rescue.

The Blue Santas Are Coming To Town!

Leicester City Football Club and the Foxes Foundation will participate in the Santa Fun Run & Walk in Loughborough on Sunday 4th December. This means that entrants to this popular event will be able to select red or blue santa suits, and support a charity of their choice.

GCR Museum, Architect Selection The Great Central Railway recently launched a competition to select an architect to design a new heritage railway museum to be built at its station on the outskirts of Leicester. On Thursday 6th October, six award winning architects presented their designs to a panel of judges which included representatives from the Great Central Railway, the National Railway Museum, Leicester City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund together with a number of specialist advisers.

Andy Munro, GCR CEO stated: "We are humbled and honoured to have six of the UK's most talented and inspirational architects competing to design our new heritage railway museum. Each of the designs has magnificently embraced our requirement to showcase locomotives and artefacts from the national collection within a building of outstanding architectural merit. A Premium Place To Play And Learn Opens For Little Ones In Loughborough A new premium nursery in Loughborough is now officially open, offering families in the community places for up to 60 local children.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood cut the ribbon at The Nursery, located on Garton Road at Our Lady’s Convent School’s campus, at a special ceremony on Saturday 1st October.

The Nursery, which is part of Loughborough Endowed Schools, provides high quality childcare for babies aged from six weeks to youngsters up to the age of four from 7:30am to 6:00pm on weekdays, 51 weeks of the year, excluding bank holidays.

Nursery manager Carla Brindley is delighted to see the nursery now officially open. She said: “It was fantastic to show the Mayor and Mayoress around our spacious new facilities and introduce them to our nursery staff.

Christmas Tree Spectacular At Loughborough Parish Church

Keen Appetite For Plan Zheroes Food Project In Leicestershire Businesses and charities across Leicestershire are uniting to address food waste and poverty.

Utilising the innovative Plan Zheroes platform, organisations of all sizes can donate surplus food items to charities to address the needs of their communities. Plan Zheroes projects are unique in being able to accommodate small and occasional donations as well as large or regular ones. Local charities and social projects are also excited by the opportunity to link with a network of volunteers who collect and deliver the food in cases where charities do not have the people or vehicles to do it themselves.

At a strategic meeting of the Leicestershire food-bank network, concerns were voiced regarding the impact of the Welfare Reform and Work Act 2016 on vulnerable groups including lone parent families. Demand for food related assistance is predicted to rise, and this is driving stakeholders to seek new ways to work together to

address food poverty issues.

Working closely with Leicestershire County Council, Plan Zheroes will support the formation of a selfsustaining network. The project launches with a special event at Fearon Hall, Loughborough on Saturday 26th November from 09:30 – 12:00, where projects such as the Utilise Social Cafe run by students from Loughborough University will be showcased.

Attendees will have the chance to see a demonstration of the free Plan Zheroes platform and find out how they can meet their organisation's own food needs.

Nichole Browne, Leicestershire Community Co-ordinator says: “We are delighted with the response to our project.

Businesses immediately see the financial and social benefits of avoiding food waste, and we are able to help Charities with practical issues such as transporting donated food.”

Preparations are in full swing for the magnificent annual Community Christmas Tree Festival in the heart of Loughborough at All Saints with Holy Trinity Church (often known as the Parish Church) on Steeple Row, due to take place on 24th27th November.

Over 100 local community groups and businesses are expected to take part, all providing Christmas trees decorated in original and often unexpected ways. The trees are fully lit and are displayed en masse in all their sparkling glory inside this beautiful, medieval church.

“It’s amazing to see some of the ideas that the organisations, groups and businesses who provide the trees come up with!” says one member of the team organising the festival. “Many are traditional trees, beautifully decorated in traditional ways, often using homemade crafts. Others are zany and artistic variations on the Christmas tree theme, designed to make you think or to put a smile on your face.”

For only £2.50 for adults, and with free entrance for children visiting with an adult, this is one seasonal treat that won’t break the bank and attracts hoards of visitors every year. As well as the trees themselves, there is a Christmas fair, a range of delicious refreshments for sale, and so much to wonder at and enjoy for visitors of all ages.

The grand opening of the Community Christmas Tree festival, with the turning on of

lights by the Mayor of Charnwood and beautiful singing by the Loughborough Endowed Schools, takes place at 7.00pm on the evening of Wednesday, 23rd November (tickets for adults £6.00; free entry for accompanied children). Thereafter the church is open from 10.00am to 5.30pm for the rest of the week, and then from 12 noon to 4.00pm on Sunday, 27th November. There is also the Festival Concert to enjoy, which takes place at 7.30pm on Friday, 25th November (tickets for adults are £10.00; once again, accompanied children have free entry), when the audience will be entertained by the Ratcliffe Chorale and the Loughborough Male Voice Choir. And last (but not least!), members of the public will have the chance to raise the roof of the church themselves at a Festive Sing-Along on Sunday, 27th November at 3.00pm to mark the end of the celebrations.
