What regiment?

We have recently been given a collection of Yeomanry and Hussars cap badges, this was listed as 8th Hussars which everyone knows is (was) the Kings Royal Irish which it clearly isn't.

We have been unable to correctly identify it.

The eagle suggests Waterloo, the 1st Royal Dragoons is very similar with the number 105 under the feet of the eagle (this refers to the 105th French Infantry battalion whose standard they captured at Waterloo). Our badge has the number '8' under the feet.

Updated - What Is This?

Recently we posted a picture of an oxygen gauge, picked up by a schoolboy in WW2 close to Normanton on Soar. We thought it was probably from a Wellington or Lancaster bomber and asked if anyone knew of any crashing in the area.

Marigold Cleeve came up with the answer, "On 19 April 1944 four RAF men were killed when their Wellington Mark X bomber MF200 crashed in Normanton on Soar while on a training exercise in night flying". She went on to say there is a memorial plaque in the park at Normanton to the four men who died.

A seeming nondescript object suddenly has a tragic story connected to it reminding us of the sacrifice made by so many.

Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers Exhibition “The Listeners Beaumanor Hall” The above volunteers are providing a display 2nd February until 31st March 2017 in the Library on Granby Street to acknowledge the work carried out by the Listeners at Beaumanor Hall Woodhouse Eaves Leics.

“Beaumanor was the headquarters of the War Office Y Group. This group consisted of hundreds of secret listeners, who would intercept enemy signals and send information back to Bletchley Park for decoding.

Most of these listeners were amateur radio operators. These operators endured extreme conditions on a daily basis in order to ensure as much information could be gleaned as possible prior to important decisions being made.”

Mark Of Success For Car Parks In Charnwood All five borough council car parks in Loughborough town centre have been recognised for being among the safest in the country.

Four sites have received the prestigious Park Mark Safer Parking Award accreditation for the eighth year in a row, while the Beehive Lane car park has now held the accreditation for twelve years.

The sites are operated by Charnwood Borough Council and were awarded the Park Mark from the British Parking Association for ensuring a safe environment and high standard of cleanliness, signage, surveillance and lighting.

Christmas Lights Switch On Kicks Off Festive Fun In Charnwood *** Loughborough’s Christmas lights will be officially switched on Sunday, November 27 2016 at 5pm*** *** There will be activities and events running throughout the day including choirs, children’s entertainers and local performers. ***

The festive season will begin with fun for all the family at Loughborough’s Christmas lights switch-on.

The town’s spectacular Christmas illuminations will be officially switched on, on Sunday, November 27 at 5pm, in Loughborough Market Place.

The day’s entertainment will start at 1pm on the main stage in the Market Place with a host of entertainment led by the team from Gem 106 and mascot, Sammy the Hamster.

Once again the fun will be shown on a giant screen so everyone can enjoy the festive atmosphere.

They will joined by a host of musical entertainment including Loughborough Endowed Schools BIG band, St Botolph’s School Choir, Rawlins Academy’s The Mistletones, Loughborough Student Union’s Sing and young local performer Alyshia Dhaak.

The cast of Cinderella, who are appearing at Loughborough Town Hall, will also be performing at the event and there will be a Glice skating rink, street markets, entertainers and Santa’s Grotto in Carillon Court.

Festivities have been organised

by Charnwood Borough Council, in partnership with Love Loughborough.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, the Council’s lead member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Once again the magic of Christmas will arrive in Loughborough with entertainment and festivities for the whole family.

There will also be a French market and a charity market at the event so people can pick up bargain gifts and we’ve got free parking

on the day and every Sunday afterwards until Christmas.”

David Pagett-Wright, Chair of Love Loughborough BID said: “The Christmas lights switch on is always a great event and this year promises to be no exception.

Decorating Outdoors Decorating Outdoors Christmas is not far away and the shops and high streets are bedecked with festive flair. We all love to decorate interiors with trees, tinsel & fairy lights and It’s becoming more fashionable to light up our exteriors too. Driving through my hometown seeing garden trees festooned with lights gives me a really festive feel.

For those who don’t want to opt for the bright and flashing themed light set ups on offer, there are other garden related options to add Christmas cheer to the entrance way of the home.

Topiary I love the elegant structure which topiary gives. Box (Buxus) is easily available from garden centres and DIY stores on the run up to Christmas. The most popular shapes are spheres, but for Christmas the cones or pyramids seem most appropriate. Box is the most affordable but Yew (Taxus) and Ilex crenata are good options too as they are not affected by the dreaded Box Blight. Planted in simple terracotta, stone or resin containers they add green formality to either side of a doorway and with the addition of fairy lights they take on a very festive look. Be sure to use exterior grade fairy lights.

Potted Christmas Trees As I sit writing this article in midNovember, I have today seen the first potted Christmas trees available at my local supermarket!

For me November is a tad early to be buying a tree for indoor use, but they are great used outdoors where they won’t get too hot or dry and will therefore retain their leaves to Christmas & beyond.

Again these look great with exterior lights and can be decked with florists ribbon (waterproof), cones and berries to give a natural and stylish look.

Christmas Wreaths Wreaths are certainly the most popular way of bringing festive cheer to the entrance way. A simple holly ring gives classic elegance. For a more elaborate wreath search your local market, florist or garden centre for a wreath made using an array of colourful foliage or twigs like belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

Eucalyptus, Conifer, Dogwood, Ivy. Alternatively make your own. Florists often sell the metal bases and wire to which you add a selection of festive foliage. Or buy a simple Holly wreath and add your own decorations. Mini baubles available from most stores look great wired on to a wreath for some added glamour.

Lighting Up Shrubs I have an evergreen hedge in front of my home with and matching domes - planted long before I bought the house. They lend themselves well to being adorned with fairy lights to bring a simple shimmer of light to the exterior. I love to arrive home on an evening to see the house lit up - I know Christmas is just around the corner.

50th Anniversary Action Man Weekend 50th Anniversary Action Man Weekend to be held in the former offices of the Palitoy factory on 3rd and 4th December.

Palitoy was an important employer in Coalville from 1937 to 1986 marketing such toys as Tiny Tears, Tressy, Pippa, Girls World, Star Wars, Care Bears, Mainline Railways as well as Action Man and Action Force.

An innovative sports scheme to divert young people away from anti-social behaviour has been launched.

Charnwood Community Safety Partnership has teamed up with Leicester Tigers to offer a group of secondary school students the chance to gain sports qualifications, learn the game and pick up important life and work skills.

The Charnwood Dynamite Programme will work with the chosen youngsters at the Tigers Education Centre set in the heart of the club’s famous Welford Road Ground.

Cllr Jonathan Morgan, Chairman of the Safety Partnership, said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Leicester Tigers to offer these young people such a positive programme. I hope those taking part will relish this opportunity and get stuck in. Not only can they gain qualifications, but hopefully they will learn

important skills which they can take into other areas such as education and, in the future, the workplace. Playing rugby at the highest level requires incredible discipline and professionalism – qualities which can be used in other areas of life. Those chosen to take part may have been on the edge of anti-social behaviour and the aim of this programme is to give them some focus and divert their energies into something more positive.”

The programme, which involves taking part in a number of sports including rugby, has been funded by a £5,000 grant from the Leicestershire Police and Crime Commissioner’s office.

During the 23-week programme, the young people will attain accredited sports qualifications covering topics such as strength and conditioning and health and nutrition. They will also take part in various practical sport and leisure activities, alongside leadership sessions and employability skills.

Relationship Breakdowns – Exposing the Myths The breakdown of any relationship can be stressful, and can be more so if there are children and/or if a couple wants to divorce.

The personal nature of a relationship breakdown means that it can be difficult to ask for help or advice, and quite often, people rely on what they are told by wellmeaning friends, family members, and colleagues. Here are a few ‘statements’ that you may have encountered: • Once you have been separated for two years, divorce is automatic • You can have a ‘quickie’ divorce • ‘Irretrievable breakdown of the relationship’ is the only ground for divorce • Once you are divorced, your surname reverts to your maiden name automatically • Step-parents cannot have parental responsibility for their step-children • Courts decide how much child maintenance should be paid • If you don’t pay child maintenance you have no right to see your child • Once a couple have lived together for six months or longer, they are classed as ‘common law’ husband and wife and have the same rights as married couples/civil partners • “When I divorced, my husband/wife walked away with everything, and I got nothing” You may be surprised to learn that each of the above statements is at least partially untrue – some are completely false.

For example, the only way to have the same rights as married couples/civil partners, is

to be married/enter into a civil partnership – those rights aren’t acquired simply by cohabiting for a set period. This can be of particular significance where one partner moves into a property owned by the other, as the partner moving in may not be entitled to an interest in the property upon the breakdown of the relationship.

Likewise, it is often not appreciated that it is the child that is entitled to contact with their parent(s), and not the other way around. As such, a child may still be entitled to see an ‘absent’ parent that doesn’t pay maintenance.

It was a true honour and privilege to lay a wreath at Loughborough’s Remembrance Service earlier this month. We were blessed with beautiful weather and the fall of the poppies from the top of the Carillon Tower is always an emotional moment. Thousands of people turned out to support the event and mark this very special occasion. And it is always fantastic to see how many service men and women are on parade joined by many young people in our cadet groups and organisations such as the Cubs, Scouts and Guides. Thank you to everyone who takes part and particularly to the Royal British Legion for their organisation of the service.

After Remembrance Sunday thoughts turn to Christmas and the start of all the wonderful Christmas celebrations locally.

Fortunately I love singing carols because I know I will have sung many by Christmas Day! As well as the Loughborough lights switchon on Sunday 27th November I am looking forward to the All Saints with Holy Trinity Community Christmas Tree Festival. The festival runs from 24th – 27th November at the church. It is open 10am to 5.30pm on Thursday to Saturday and 12 noon to 4.30pm on Sunday 27th. Refreshments will be served and there will also be a Christmas fair. I look forward to seeing you there.

This year sees the centenary of the awful Battle of the Somme which saw hundreds of thousands of men killed and many times that number severely wounded.

I believe recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan mean that we have an increasing appreciation and sense of gratitude to those who put their lives at risk to preserve our safety and security.

As we live in increasingly troubled times we should never forget that armed conflict is something to be avoided at all costs but we only do that if we work together and work hard at preserving our security. Peace cannot be left to chance and we take risks with it at our peril.

Regular readers will know that I have long been a supporter of the electrification of the Midland Mainline – the train line we use from Loughborough station to get to London and on to Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. I am concerned that the Department for Transport might be re-thinking its commitment to the electrification project because of cost overruns on other lines elsewhere in the country. Earlier this month I led a debate in Parliament on this and the Minister was left in no doubt that the Midlands does not expect to be left behind in this project which will increase capacity, introduce quieter and more environmentally friendly trains and support commuters and businesses.

The Firends Of Charnwood Forest “Lacemakers and Luddites” Talk by Mr Tony Jarram Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall Monday January 23 at 7.30 p.m.

An illustrated talk of the of the development of lacemaking from hand made to machine production. The story is centred on the East Midlands especially Loughborough and its environs. It is a story of invention, migration and destruction and is as full of twists and turns as lace itself.

The research for this project started with an exhibition by the Friends of Charnwood Museum in 2007 and has continued ever since with an international following by the descendants of former lace workers. A recent exhibition in Loughborough Library further enhanced the story.

JONATHAN MORGAN Remembering The Fallen This year’s remembrance service in Queens Park was possibly one of the most poignant I have attended.

The sky was blue; the air was warm and still – but those elements were not in themselves the making of the day. I was certainly impressed by the larger than normal crowds, and as ever, the number of service personnel, cadets, scouts, guides and volunteers on parade.

I was, however, moved by the sermon, which was beautifully written and delivered by the Rector of All Saints, the Rev Wendy Dalrymple – her description of a local man, through childhood, youth, and his eventual sacrifice – the son that didn’t return to our town a century ago.

The sermon when combined with the event, made more of an impact on my thoughts that day than in previous years. Perhaps, with recent uncertainties nationally and globally, the possibility of conflict closer to home has been more real than at any time since my childhood, when nuclear war seemed inevitable. I thought of my own son, and my dreams for his future, contrasted with that of the young man, whose future was extinguished a hundred years before.

Each year we stand and remember those that lost their lives to bring peace, democracy and freedom to our country and world - without their sacrifices, our future would have been far worse. But my personal challenge over the next 12 months is to remember that warm, sunny, sombre day in Queens Park, not just this time next year, but each, and every day of the next year, and strive for a better future for our family and friends at home and beyond.

Getting Away From ‘Tick-Box’ Processes

Tony will raise several controversial theories relating to the Luddite attack in Loughborough and the reasons why the industry left the town to reestablish in the South West of England and beyond.

Not for the first time have I written about the problems with ‘tick-box consultations’ by companies and organisations locally. Too often the quality of the consultation is lost by the need to just complete one to satisfy a requirement to consult – to tick a box.

I have been holding discussions

within Charnwood to try to bring some relevance to what we ask people, so that the quality of the responses has some meaning and worth. I’m afraid that sometimes results from consultations are presented without comment, even though they have obvious flaws, either by the number of responses, geographic location, or by profile of respondent.

My concern about why, how and where we consult is the subject of a series of discussions, and I hope to make some progress over the next few months in developing a more logical, structured and meaningful approach to how the council seeks the views of residents and businesses locally.

Have A Real Ball This Christmas In Loughborough The festive season starts in Loughborough on 27th November with the Christmas lights switchon – there will be entertainment throughout the day, with shops and stalls open, fairground rides and a skating rink.

The Council has also worked with the Love Loughborough team to make sure there is free Sunday parking in the Beehive and some other car parks for the switch-on and throughout December – so please make use of them and support your local shops.

Of course, if you fancy working up an appetite for all those mince pies in December, why not enter the Santa Fun Run on 4th December, organised by the Rotary Club, with over 1500 happy Santas running alongside you.
