Get Set! To Run A Very Special Mile For Joe FAMILIES and young children are invited to join a charity mile-long fun run to support the work of the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust.

Joe’s Jog, now in its third year, will take place before the Mattioli Woods Rothley 10k running event, which takes place in the Leicestershire village on Tuesday 14 June starting at 18.18pm .

The family- friendly fun run gives families and children aged seven and over the chance to be part of the Rothley 10k evening. It also raises awareness of the vital work of the JHMT's ongoing work to raise awareness and understanding of sudden cardiac death in young people, between 12 – 35 years old.

The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was set up in memory of Leicestershire teenager Joe Humphries, 14 years old, collapsed and died suddenly whilst out jogging in his home village of Rothley in October 2012. Joe was a victim to sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), which causes a disturbance in the heart’s rhythm.

Steve Humphries, chair of JHMT, said “This is another chance for families to stride out together at the now annual fun run which help

bring the community together at the annual Rothley 10k and helps raise funds for JHMT's work to save young heartbeats. Nearly 100 runners took part last year and we do hope for another great turnout this year.”

All funds raised from Joe’s Jog will go towards JHMT’s vital work providing life-saving CPR training and defibrillators in city and county schools and for sports clubs. This is just one of the lifesaving initiatives that makes up the work of the JHMT. The charity also campaigns for greater awareness of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) amongst the general public, parents, young teenagers, medical staff and professionals working with young people.

The JHMT Inspire Awards, a small grants scheme also helps young people to fulfill their potential in the fields of music, sports, creativity or entrepreneurship.

Exciting New Phase Of Homes Underway At Grange Park As Karen Joins The Team

Shortcliffe Park Gets An Upgrade Work has started on a £125,000 revamp of a park in Loughborough which will see the creation of a new skate park and ball park.

New footpaths will also be added to Shortcliffe Park, off Old Ashby Road, and goalposts and log seating will be installed.

The work is being carried out by Charnwood Borough Council and follows consultation in the area with a number of different groups including young skateboarders.

It is being funded by £57,000 from section 106 agreements following development in the area, a £15,000 donation from Loughborough University and £53,100 from SITA UK. Councillor Hilary Fryer, Lead Member for Leisure and Open

The work is expected to be completed by the end of July. The existing play area will remain open.

Loughborough High School Team Is Young Enterprise Leicestershire Company Of The Year Loughborough High School students have been recognised for their business acumen after being named Young Enterprise Leicestershire Company of the Year.

The Company Programme is Young Enterprise’s ultimate business challenge for 15 – 19 year olds. Over the course of a year students find out what it’s really like to set up and run a business – from raising share capital to designing their product or service to selling directly to customers. This event sees companies from across the East Midlands battling it out to become East Midlands Company of the Year 2016.

Since September, ‘Endeavour’, the Loughborough High School team of 19 girls from Year 12, organised themselves as a business with specified roles, identified a market and a product, produced the product and generated sales and profit. Throughout the process they benefited from the guidance from the Head of Economics and Business at LHS, Robert Needs, and business advisors, Eric Bradley, formerly of Procter and Gamble and Nicola Harlow, formerly of Leicester City Council.

The sixth form team entered the national Young Enterprise competition against other Leicestershire schools and have progressed successfully through the first two rounds in February and March. Along the way they also picked up awards for innovation, best product, best report, best presentation and best financial performance.

At the Leicestershire final, held at the School of Business and Economics at Loughborough University on 21st April, they were named Young Enterprise Leicestershire Company of the Year, which will see them represent the county at the East Midlands finals on June 28th.

A very proud Mr Needs, said: ‘’This achievement puts Endeavour in the top 5% of Young Enterprise companies in the UK. They attained this through their own efforts and worked exceptionally well as a team employing a range of business related skills including creativity, financial management and leadership”.

Dick Howard, our speaker finder and past Chairman, introduced our talk at the meeting on April 25th, saying that he had chosen this title as Charnwood Forest had been neighbour to so much “nasty” extractive industry that he wondered if fracking for gas might be yet another such neighbour.

The search area of interest to us - called Bowland - covers the full width of the UK across the north Midlands and northern England.

The southern extremity includes Loughborough. Not far to the north there seem to be deposits which might be worth exploring.

The regulatory framework covering exploration and extraction will be demanding. So far, no licences have been issued for Leicestershire.

Our speaker, David Bridge, is a retired geologist with much experience in the oil and gas industry. He served for many years with the British Geological Survey. It quickly became clear that his factual explanations were unbiased and could be respected.

However it was equally clear from what he said that there is an ever increasing requirement for gas in the UK and a diminishing reliability of supply into the future.

David left us to make up our own minds on the subject. Our guests included a group of protesters whose noisy interruptions were capably countered by our officers and our speaker. They had not come to listen to the factual explanations but to make their own points.

On the other hand, his detailed explanation of the process of fracking to obtain a new supply of gas left few in doubt that the process was an expensive, messy and dirty business with many threats of pollution and

Charity Fun Day Hailed Success As Families Gather To Celebrate Autism Awareness More than 100 people came together at a community fun day to celebrate Autism Awareness Day held by Loughborough Charity Glebe House in partnership with Leicestershire Autistic Society last weekend raising over £200 in just three hours.

Families with children on the autism spectrum were invited to enjoy a fun filled packed day which included face painting, balloon modelling, visits from emergency services, a tractor, a sensory room, arts and crafts, Bouncy Castles and giant bubbles.

Representatives from Tesco and Sainsburys were on hand to provide their community support.

A spokesperson from Tesco said: “Lots of awareness was raised, loads of fun had and many new friendships were made. We were chuffed to be asked to help, donate raffle prizes and have Jody our Community Champion available to lend her support. It truly brought families together and was a great success!”

Often labelled as the ‘invisible’ disability, families do have to work that much harder to feel accepted by the community because of their lack of knowledge of the condition. By raising local awareness, charities like Glebe House will help educate the community and businesses to behave in a positive way and help individuals live a richer and fulfilling life.”

Sainsburys Store Manager Nigel Dean said: “We were delighted to have been able to support Glebe House with the world Autism day, community fun event. It was a great opportunity for our colleagues Monica and Hayley to support our local community with arts and crafts fun, not only for the children but their families too.”

Peter Warlow, chief executive of Glebe House, said: “Glebe House provides help to many people with autism and it is important that we continue to build awareness of the condition at every opportunity to help the lives of people with autism and those who dedicate their lives to supporting them.”

Local Businesses donated a range of raffle prizes which included autism friendly tickets by Odeon Cinema and Leicester based 360play, a family ticket to Conkers and National Space Centre and many more, all of which helped to raise over £200 for both charities.

A spokesperson from Leicestershire Autistic Society commented: “This was a fantastic way to celebrate World, National and Local Autism in our lives and seeing families attend from both the county and city region.”

New Head For Our Lady’s Convent School Our Lady’s Convent School (OLCS) in Loughborough is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Julian Murphy as its new Headmaster. He will succeed retiring Headteacher, Mrs Patricia Hawley and will take up his position in September.

Dr Murphy is an Honours graduate in Philosophy and Politics from Southampton University with an MSc in Government and Administration from the University of London and a DPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Oxford. He is currently Director of Studies (Academic Deputy Head) at Woldingham School in Surrey where he was previously Head of Religious Studies.

He said “It is a great privilege to have been appointed as Headmaster of Our Lady’s Convent School. I am tremendously excited to be taking over the reins for the next stage of the school’s development. My family and I are looking forward to moving to

The appointment is a further milestone in what has been a significant year for the Catholic independent school, which educates boys from age 3 to 11 and girls from 3 to 18. Loughborough Charity Helps Local Community Recognise ‘Invisible’ Disability At Awareness Event.

Nominate Your Hero Residents are being encouraged to recognise people who go the extra mile to help their community.

Charnwood Borough Council is asking people to nominate a Community Hero who they feel makes a real difference to the lives of local people.

Parents, carers, professionals and emergency operatives from the county gathered together to help raise awareness of what can often be described as the ‘invisible’ disability. Loughborough based charity; Glebe House in partnership with Leicestershire Autistic Society hosted an autism awareness event as part of the Autism Awareness Month.

Autism is a condition that affects how a person communicates, processes information and how that relates to other people. As such, it often goes unnoticed.

Specialist speakers provided an overview of the steps to diagnosing someone with autism, identifying and managing behaviour, how to communicate and what methods were available.

Informational stalls from SENA, ADHD Solutions and the Sibs Service were on hand to provide support and advice to attendees.

A representative from the National Autistic Society was also present to give an update on their National ‘Too much Information’ campaign and what services were available in the Leicestershire area.

Attendees were given the opportunity to take part in a basic level awareness training ‘Making Sense of Autism’ delivered by the Autism Education Trust.

Every child in 1 to 100 has Autism in the UK. According to a recent survey carried out by the National Autistic Society, 99% of the public do know what autism is yet only a sixth rarely know how autism can affect someone’s behaviour.

Fire Rescue Community Safety Educator, Harshad Saujani said: “I have benefitted very much by attending the awareness day. The information given will be an asset to me in the course of my duties as community safety educator in the Fire Service. I believe anyone working in any area where they come into contact with autism will benefit a lot from these types of events in the future.”

Sainsburys PR Ambassador Hayley Sharman said: “Taking part in the

Autism training workshop, for Autism awareness week, was a great investment of time. The skills and knowledge learnt on the day will be invaluable both work and home. We welcome everybody here at Sainsbury’s Loughborough and we look forward to meeting people that we met in store soon.”

A parent whose grandchild was diagnosed with autism also commented: “I have to say I had a fantastic experience and learnt so much although it also reiterated how much more there is for me to learn. I took so much away from the event and shared a lot with my grandson's parents as to why he does certain things which they were not aware of the reasons why and how a lot of it made more sense to them. I would love to attend and again thank you for this opportunity.“ Jenny Cornwell, Chair of Leicestershire Autistic Society commented, “Many thanks to Glebe House for doing a great job organising and hosting the event. I believe this event was a good springboard for the LAS to continue offering training for parents, carers and professionals.“ Peter Warlow, chief executive of Glebe House, said: “Glebe House provides help to many people with autism and it is important that we continue to build awareness of the condition at every opportunity to help the lives of people with autism and those who dedicate their lives to supporting them.

Glebe House are holding a ‘Managing Behaviour’ Session to help parents understand and manage behaviour for those with a mild learning disability on Tuesday 24th May, 6pm – 8pm at Glebe House.

Community Heroes Day takes place on July 31, in Market Street, Loughborough. The event is a chance for local groups to showcase the work they do for the community and network with other organisations.

Councillor Jonathan Morgan, Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion, said “As well as supporting local organisations, we are also looking for our own heroes. They could do anything from mowing the lawn for a neighbour to running a youth club.

If you know someone who goes out of their way to help others then please nominate them. We want to recognise people who are making a difference and improving our community as a result.”

Take Time Out To De-Stress During Mental Health Awareness Week Free health checks, meditation and walking events are being held across Charnwood as part of a national campaign to improve mental health.

The Charnwood Mental Health network, which is made up of organisations from across Charnwood, is supporting the campaign to encourage people to take time out of their daily routines to relax and help improve their wellbeing.

The activities will take place from Monday, May 16 to Sunday, May 22.

Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Customer Services, Cllr Jonathan Morgan, said “To mark Mental Health Awareness Week and Dementia Awareness Week there are a range of activities on offer to raise awareness of relaxation techniques, signs of mental illness and ways to improve your mental wellbeing. We hope people will try some of these free events and

LOCAL ADVERTISERS Last Summer, the Chancellor announced significant changes to rules on Inheritance Tax (IHT), including the phased increase of the IHT allowance.

This will eventually rise to £1million for married couples who own their own home. For some the change is welcome, but not for those without children, or who do not own their home.

The current tax-free amount, known as the ‘nil rate band’, stands at £325,000 for an individual. Married couples, or those in a civil partnership, who leave their estates to each other will have a tax-free amount of £650,000. The nil rate band levels will remain the same; the amount over the nil rate band is taxable at 40%.

For deaths after 6 April 2017 an additional IHT allowance, known as the ‘main residence nil rate band’ (MRNRB) will also be available. This new relief will apply only if a main residence is inherited by direct descendants, such as children, step-children or grandchildren.

The tax-free MRNRB can be claimed for only one residential property. If the Deceased owned more than one residence, their Personal Representatives may nominate which will benefit.

Despite what the allowance’s name suggests, the property does not need to have been the Deceased’s main residence at the time of death, and neither must they have resided at the property for the whole of the period of ownership; it is enough that they were resident at the property at some point in their

life. A property that was never used by the Deceased as a residence, such as a property that was only ever a buy-to-let investment, would not qualify.

The tax-free MRNRB amount will be introduced at £100,000 per person, and will increase by £25,000 each year until it reaches £175,000 per person in 2020.

From then, if the MRNRB applies, up to the first £500,000 of a single person’s estate will be free from IHT; for married couples, up to the first £1million will be tax-free. After 2021, these figures are expected to increase in line with the Consumer Prices Index.

Unfortunately, estates worth over £2million may lose some or all of the tax-free MRNRB; the allowance will be reduced by £1 for every £2 over the £2million threshold. Therefore in 2017, when the new band is introduced at £100,000 for an individual, an estate worth £2.2million will not qualify for the MRNRB. Where a person has sold or downsized their home on or after 8 July 2015, the tax-free MRNRB will still be available, provided that the proceeds of the sale of the home or assets of the equivalent value are passed to their direct descendants.

Thurcaston And Cropston Open Gardens 2016 - 10th Anniversary The 10th Open Gardens event in the villages of Thurcaston and Cropston will take place this summer on the weekend of 25th and 26th June.

We hope to have a number of different gardens for you to visit across the two villages, some who have taken part in the event for most of those 10 years! Some are large, some small, some immaculate, some very much less so! But all for you to enjoy.

It is often said how welcoming our Gardeners are and they would love you to come and see all their hard work and help them raise money for a great cause.

Gardens will be open from 2pm – 6pm on both days; tickets will be £4 each (accompanied children and wheelchair users free) and will be valid for both days. They can be purchased on the day from any of the Open Gardens. Look for the fuchsia coloured balloons!

All money raised from the event will go to LOROS and the villages’ new Good Neighbour Scheme.

Charnwood Prepares To Help Syrian Refugees Charnwood Borough Council is preparing to help house and support up to 50 Syrian refugees over the next five years.

District councils in Leicestershire and Rutland County Council are working together to find suitable homes for refugees who will arrive under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme.

The Government has agreed to expand the scheme to take a further 20,000 Syrians over the next five years across the country.

Charnwood, Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, Melton, North West Leicestershire and Rutland councils have all agreed to take part in the relocation scheme.

These are people in genuine need who are fleeing awful conditions. I hope local residents will welcome them into our communities. The number of people we will help has been decided upon according to local population figures and we feel it is an appropriate amount.”

The Council will use private sector housing.

The refugees will be coming from designated camps close to the Syrian border or areas around those camps. They will not be coming from Calais or anywhere else.

Summer Colour We’ve had some lovely sunny days recently to give a taste of what summer will bring, enough to warm the earth and lift the spirits. With the weather improving our attention increasingly turns to the garden.

It’s easy to add a splash of seasonal colour with a visit to the local garden centre or nursery in June & July, but what to choose?

Verbena

Plants for Containers

Pelargonium – AKA Upright geraniums, these come in a huge range of colours from vibrant reds and pinks to soft lilac and white.

They are great in pots, coping in hot spots and infrequent watering. Scented Pelargoniums are a favourite of mine. They have less prominent flowers but the heavily scented foliage, often patterned or textured they make an interesting display.

Verbena – these come in a range of habits, either trailing, bushy or a combination of the two. They all flower prolifically, benefiting from occasional dead heading. Again there is a vast range to choose from including some pretty bicoloured forms.

Dahlias

Million Bells – These are my favourite plants for containers and hanging baskets. They flower from May right through to October without the need to deadhead.

there are so many of them that they create great mounds of colour.

New Guinea Impatiens – The large flowered and leaved cousins of Buzy Lizzies, these provide a dramatic splash of colour throughout the summer. They are really tender so be sure to plant them out once all chance of frost has past.

Begonias – the popular Non-Stop and Illumination forms flower constantly through the summer months without the need for constant attention.

Gap fillers for borders

Fuchsias – choose bush forms rather than the trailing ones and these will fit neatly into empty gaps in the border. There are small dainty blooms right through to the huge American hybrids with deeply ruffled blooms. Fuchsias do benefit from deadheading to remove spent flowers and their purple fruits in order to prolong the flowering.

Fuchsias are particularly good in shady areas and are equally as happy in well watered containers as they are in the ground.

Osteospermum – the Cape Daisy, these neat plants are smothered in large daisies in a whole range of colours from spring to late summer.

Deadheading is worthwhile to ensure they remain floriferous.

Osteospermum Compactum or O. ‘Tresco Purple’. These varieties reliably make it through each winter, whereas most will succumb to the frosts.

Dahlias – Garden centres and nurseries stock dwarf varieties of Dahlias at this time of year with are particularly good for popping in to gaps in the border as well as pots.

Great clusters of petals in a rainbow of colours are held on sturdy stems above green or purple foliage.

Deadheading is essential as is fending off greedy slugs.

Rudbeckia – hardy varieties are commonly found in borders, but there are many half-hardy varieties offered in garden centres and nurseries in early summer to give brilliantly bright blooms non-stop until late autumn. New varieties have large blooms with interesting blotched petals.

Deadhead to prolong their season of interest.

Pelargoniums, Dahlias, Fuchsias and Million Bells will be featuring heavily in my garden this year.

A brand new innovative self-help book for all dog owners.

The book covers the most common behavioural problems experienced by dog owners and reveals quick, effective cures and some of his trade secrets.

Controversially, some modern training methods are dissected and discredited and the lid is lifted on the tricks that other trainers and behaviourists use to hoodwink paying customers while failing to deliver their promises.

Over £5k raised for children’s services charity thanks to 75 mile walk by Loughborough Dad Local resident Jeremy Meadows completed his 75 mile trek over the bank holiday weekend along the National Forest Way from the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to Beacon Hill and has raised over £5,000 for Glebe House where his son attends the children’s service.

Joined by over 30 friends, family and colleagues from Lloyds Bank during the course of the weekend, he managed to keep his spirits up despite the weekend weather and met his son Thomas at the finish line after taking in the fantastic views on top of Beacon Hill.

Jeremy commented on his journey, “It has been a fantastic experience. We encountered a fair amount of mud and managed to avoid the worst of the weekend weather, until a downpour in

Bringing everything from jazz, to opera and pop, this year’s Raise The Roof event is a must for all the family.

Raising money for LOROS Hospice, ‘Singing For Fun’, a group of more than 400 singers, will be among those taking to the stage at De Montfort Hall on Sunday 29th May. They will be joined by 25-man chorus, The Heart of England Chorus, soloist Auide Miralla and the Hall Orchard Singers, a group of school children.

Anne Hughes, Director of Singing For Fun said “We have performed at hundreds of public events, raising somewhere in the region of £100,000 for local and national charities. It is a pleasure to perform for LOROS at the wonderful De Montfort Hall and it is wonderful that

At the start of the month I was honoured to be one of the keynote speakers at the annual Rainbows lunch held at the Leicester Tigers ground.

Rainbows Children’s Hospice is an amazing organisation and it is an honour to have them based in Loughborough and a privilege to support their work.

Many Leicestershire MPs took part in a House of Commons debate on funding for brain tumour research recently. Almost 1000 constituents signed a petition to have the topic debated in Parliament and I am grateful to Ed Argar MP for mentioning two local families in his speech. Meanwhile Ed and I are working to try to stop the possible closure of the Birstall Mental Health Day Centre for Older People run by Age UK. I know this is a vital service for a number of constituents and their carers which we all think should continue to be funded by our local Clinical Commissioning Group.

It was a pleasure to attend the lighting of the beacon to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday in Queen’s Park and I know there will be many forthcoming 90th birthday celebrations this summer.

I’d like to congratulate John Storer House on their 50th anniversary.

I had a great time at their celebration tea party recently.

There were some fantastic cakes - so if you are out and about in town and in need of some refreshment do visit their café.

Congratulations to new local business Dream Doors now open on the Leicester Road in Loughborough and to wish the organisers of the 2016 Loogabarooga Festival all the best.

The 2015 Festival was a real first for our town and so it’s great to see this year’s Festival launched and we are looking forward to all the events in October and seeing the book benches out in our town again.

I should also add congratulations to Leicestershire’s newest bowls club, Loughborough Phoenix and well done to everyone involved in organising the Loughborough Lions Cycle Ride to raise money for our local Air Ambulance.

Finally, it was a pleasure to open the new Waitrose in Mountsorrel recently and to see Pizza Express and Bella Italia opening in Loughborough. Together with the new Cineworld complex and other new restaurants this is an exciting time for the creation of new jobs and investment in our local economy and shows the confidence others have in our area.

JONATHAN MORGAN Time To Commemorate Our Local Heroes Anyone who has visited London will have spotted the occasional blue plaque on buildings that had a connection with notable former occupants. These range from former prime ministers, to explorers, scientists and authors. Well - did you know that Leicestershire has its own version of the scheme to commemorate significant historical figures or events from our past?

Leicestershire County Council's Green Plaque awards are nominated by residents each year, with a shortlist of 12 drawn up so that residents can vote for their preferred six plaques.

Voting is currently open till 6th June, and I would urge you to look at the list on the Council's website to decide who you think should be recognised.

This year's names are varied and range from Women's Rights campaigner, Lady Florence Dixie, to toy manufacturer, Palitoy.

Charnwood has three nominees; Charles Bennion, benefactor of Bradgate Park; William Cotton, Sileby born and Loughborough based, the inventor of the Cottons Patent Knitting Machine; and William Wilberforce, born in Wanlip, anti-slavery campaigner who died only days after his momentous Act was finally approved by parliament.

Loughborough's County Councillor, Peter Lewis, has been a great supporter of the Green Plaque scheme which has been running for a number of years now. He should be proud that this simple but effective way to remember our past continues to unearth significant individuals and events from our County's history.

The scheme deserves our support, and I would urge residents to go onto the County's website (or Google "Leicestershire County Council Green Plaque Awards" to find the link) to read about the 12 nominations, and then vote for your preferred candidates.

If you know of any suitable historical figures or events with a Leicestershire link, you can also nominate them for inclusion in next year's shortlist - details of how to do this are also on the County Council's website, along with the relevant rules.

The Hardest Working Councillor In Charnwood At some point in the year, most people will have seen the Mayor at an event, usually in full robes, or simply wearing their chain of office. However, many will not know that the the councillor chosen by Council each year to be Mayor, has probably one of the most intensive jobs at the Council.

Initially the councillor will be selected as Deputy Mayor, supporting the Mayor at functions and helping to chair full council meetings where the Mayor isn't available. However, the position of Mayor itself involves attending all events that Charnwood is expected to have a civic presence, and many more besides. It's not unusual for the Mayor to attend 20 events in a week, daytime and evening, ranging from supporting local charities, schools, public events, civic services in the Borough and elsewhere in the County, or Council functions.

For the year of their office, the Mayor effectively gives up all their time to the role, usually supported by a family member, always available to support and represent Charnwood and its residents. The current Mayor, Cllr John Capleton, is about the complete his year in office, having attended hundred's of events, always with enthusiasm and supportive words/when asked - he'll be looking forward to finally discovering what a Saturday night at home feels like again.

At the Council's Annual Meeting this month, a new Mayor will be installed, Cllr David Gaskill, the current Deputy Mayor - he will be looking forward to his new role - fully aware that he is about to become the hardest working councillor in the Borough.
