Get To Know Rotary Want to find out more about Rotary and Inner Wheel - and maybe join in?

Seven Rotary clubs and four Inner Wheel clubs around Charnwood are getting together on Saturday 10th September to open a one-stop shop for the day in Loughborough’s Carillon Court Arcade. Club members will be on hand, eager to tell you what we do.

Our aim is to spread the word about the fun and fellowship we enjoy in making a difference to people’s lives, locally in our own communities, and worldwide.

Rotary is neither political nor religious, and has moved on in great strides since its early days. It now boasts active lady members and an influx of younger members from all over the world: Loughborough Jubilee reckons it is the smallest multinational club in the UK. Among our recent activities, • we have built a garden at Loughborough Hospital, which we maintain, • and a natural play area in Beacon Hill Country Park, • awarded ‘Rotary Stars’ to highachieving children in local primary schools, • organised public speaking competitions for children in local secondary schools, • run outings for disadvantaged children and elderly people,

• made Charnwood Talking News recordings for blind people, • and raised money by organising concerts, ‘tin rattles’, • an annual “Santa Fun Run” and “Beacon Bunny Run” • an annual plant sale, • and various other schemes to support a growing list of charities and to aid disaster relief.

Rotary’s biggest worldwide project is Polio Plus, whose aim is to eliminate polio globally. In 1985 there were 125 countries in which polio was endemic; today there are only three - Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Rotary International has raised over $1 billion to cover the cost of vaccinating some two billion children.

So, do come along to find out more and ask as many questions as you like. If you are like us and want to ‘put something back’, Rotary and Inner Wheel could be for you. When shoppers enter the free WiFi zone, ‘Love Free Wi-Fi’ will pop up on their device Wi-Fi list and they can register via a simple form or through social media networks.

They can then use the Wi-Fi to surf the net whilst they are in town.

Once registered, users can also receive information on parking offers, shopping discounts, upcoming events and other town centre news.

David Pagett-Wright, Chair of Love Loughborough BID, said: “As we know, the role and function of town centres are undergoing significant change and this free Wi-Fi innovation is just part of the wider involvement of digital technology in that process. It will be an added attraction for people to come into Loughborough and stay longer, which benefits everyone, including our member businesses.”

Councillor Blake Pain, LCC cabinet member for economic growth, said: “Free Wi-Fi in Loughborough’s centre will be a real boost to residents, shoppers and businesses and make the town even more attractive to visitors. The county council is delighted to invest £10,000 in this scheme, which will benefit Loughborough’s economy.”

Bare Bones Border Morris 30th Birthday Bash

Loughborough Girls On The Look Out For New Girlguiding Volunteers

Saturday 17th September 2016- Loughborough Bare Bones Border Morris started in 1985 following a meeting of a group of friends in the pub who thought it seemed like a good idea!

After an initial practice period the side first danced out in public in summer 1986 and is still going strong.

On Saturday 17th September Loughborough will become awash with many different Morris dancing sides coming together with Bare Bones to celebrate their 30th birthday. Between the hours of 10.30 and 3.00 different styles of Morris dancing will take place in various parts of Loughborough and between 3.00-4.00 all sides will perform in Queens Park.

Girls from the Loughborough area are calling for more volunteers to help enrich the lives of girls and young women in their community.

1st Nanpantan Brownies and others in the area have become so popular that they need more volunteers to help tackle waiting lists and give every girl the opportunities offered through guiding.

We enjoy a hugely varied, girlled programme of activities, incorporating everything from world issues and science to adventure sports, social action and international travel.

Anna, age 10, said: “Our Leaders have supported us to do amazing things. I’ve made brilliant friends, it’s really boosted my confidence and we have so much fun.”

Girlguiding welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds, abilities and faiths. From supporting a group to giving just one or two hours a month, volunteering is very flexible and can fit around a busy lifestyle.

Morris dancing can now be found all over Britain. Its origins are vague; some believe the dances to to be derived from the French Moresque or Spanish Morisca dances of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; others believe the the dances to be the remains of fertility rites for soil and crops.

Distinctive styles of dancing developed associated with different parts of the country. Bare Bones dance in the tradition that comes from the Welsh English border counties where the style of dancing is brash and energetic with much clashing of wooden sticks!

Although we step all our dances to a hornpipe rhythm, each one of them has its own character. The tunes are traditional English Hornpipes, many of them with new ones created within the tradition. Some dances go to a drum and two using a solo whistle. The main melody instruments are English bagpipes, played by John Goodacre. Many of the tunes are his and are published in his own tune books. John's bellows-blown Border Pipes and Leicestershire Smallpipes are made by his brother.

We always welcome new members of any age. No qualifications or experience are required. We practice every Wednesday evening from 8-10pm in the Knightthorpe Methodist Church Hall, 106 Knightthorpe Road, Loughborough, LE11 5JU Workshops will take place 28/09/16 and 05/10/16 (8-9.30pm)

I signed up for a volunteer preparation course and the training I received was comprehensive and provided me with ‘the tools’ I needed for the role. It also reminded, reinforced and revitalised my existing parenting and life skills. An added bonus of the training was the new and lasting friendships I created with both other volunteers and the staff. I have been matched with many families and remember them all fondly. I could share memories that would make you laugh, cry, amaze you and shock you. Some visits and families run more smoothly than others but your organiser is always on hand

Rachel has volunteered for HomeStart Charnwood for over 12 years and has recently been recognised for this at our AGM. Rachel was presented with flowers, a certificate and huge thanks from us all.

When I asked Rachel about her experience of volunteering and why she chose to do it, here is what she said… ” We will all have times in our lives when we want to give something back to society, this is what led me to volunteer for Home-Start

to support you. The hardest part for me is ending my support with a family but knowing that I have made a difference to them, just by giving up 2-3 hours a week of my time is priceless.”

He thinks it is aircraft related although his father was in the army. I tend to agree, the switches are far to delicate for the infantry's fat fingers.

The only markings on it are AM beneath a crown, a Ref No. 5D/656 and the wheel on the top right changes the message in a small narrow window, SAFE, SINGLE & SALVO, DISTRIBUTION and CONTAINER. Please nobody tell me its a steel ruler!

Model Make Needed!

Having had no response to our appeal for some one to paint the polystyrene heads used to display our helmet collection (there is still time!) we now need a model maker. We sell the Haynes Spitfire models, it comes in a book and the cardboard parts are pressed out. There is a YouTube video search "Haynes press out Spitfire".

What's New At The Museum Mrs Susan Baguley has donated this WW1 Memorial Silk Bookmark to our museum recently.

Our volunteers beat off strong competition from across the county at the prestigious Heritage Awards event held at the University of Leicester on Thursday 21st July.

We were chosen as the winner of the 'Response to World War 1' category for the work put in by our volunteers in ensuring that the100th anniversary of the Zeppelin Raid on Loughborough was commemorated and culminated in the erection of the new plaque which is in the Rushes in Loughborough close to the spot where the first bomb was dropped at 8pm on the 31st January 1916

and resulted in the death of 10 local citizens and many more injuries on the night.

The Mayor of Charnwood, who attended the awards ceremony along with civic dignitaries from across the county, said "I was delighted to be there when the award was presented last Thursday evening and would like to add my congratulations to the Loughborough Carillon volunteers who in my view made certain that the tragic event in Loughborough one hundred years ago has now been rightfully recognised and respected".

WE NEED A PAINTER! We have some polystyrene heads that we use to display helmets and gas masks. We are about to take delivery of five more and they need painting. A Young lady from Rawlins Academy, Quorn did the last lot but with the schools on holiday is there a group or an individual out there who wants the pleasure of painting them?

It commemorates Pte Ben Gostick of Long Eaton. He served in the Army Service Corps and died at sea on 20 February 1919 and is buried in South Africa.

No ships went down on that day in that area so of what he died we do not know. The object will be displayed on the ground floor

It has been an extraordinarily turbulent month for Westminster politics. Those who have been MPs for many year say they cannot remember anything like it. The tragic murder of Jo Cox MP and the EU referendum result seem like long distant memories now.

I campaigned hard both locally and nationally for a Remain vote. I’m sorry that we weren’t successful but we have a clear result which it is up to the British Government to implement in a way which arrives at the best possible settlement for the British people. I’d like to thank all those who have contacted me about this, whichever side of the debate they are on, and particularly to those I met when out campaigning.

As a result of the vote we also now have a new Prime Minister, Theresa May and I am sure she will do an excellent job in negotiating a Brexit deal and also focusing on wider political issues which need to be addressed.

I am disappointed not to be continuing as Education Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities. They were roles I loved doing and I wish my successor the best of luck. However, life without weekend red boxes and more time to spend with my family and locally has many attractions.

You may have read locally that the NHS is proposing that University Hospitals of Leicester should stop doing children’s heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital. This sudden announcement which is being blamed on Leicester not performing enough operations and therefore not meeting new clinical standards is a real blow and a huge surprise. We know that the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre is excellent and the ECMO service which operates there is world-leading.

I have already met, with other Leicestershire MPs, the Health Secretary and those responsible in the NHS for these decisions. I have also spoken to those at the top of the Hospital management.

I shall continue to work with them and my fellow MPs to challenge the decision and the assumptions being made. If you would like more information please e-mail me.

Finally I was pleased to visit Rendell Primary School at the end of term to help launch this year’s Loogabarooga Children’s Illustrated Literature Festival.

The Festival will take place in the October half-term and more details can be found at: http:// loogabarooga.co.uk This is a great event for Loughborough and there are many special visitors and treats planned.

LOUGHBOROUGH BAPTIST CHURCH TO BE “COLOURED WITH FLOWERS!” A Flower Festival based around the theme of “Colours of Thanksgiving” is to be held at Loughborough Baptist Church, Baxter Gate, from Friday September 30th to Monday October 3rd.

The displays will also include some which focus the theme towards Harvest, traditionally celebrated at this time of year.

Charnwood Sports Awards

In my last article, I mentioned that I was standing down as chair of the Outwoods Management Committee - the body that oversees the woods on behalf of the residents of Loughborough so that I could be more vocal and open with residents about this very special place.

Almost everyone has become an expert in in the finer details of all of Olympic sports over the past few weeks, and proud of the achievements of TeamGB’s amazing athletes.

At the last meeting of the committee we had a full debate about access to the Outwoods by the Quorn Hunt, who wished to continue to pass through the woods up to four times a year with many horses and a pack of hounds.

Several local private landowners are happy to allow access across their fields and they are free to make their own decisions, but like others on the committee, I believed that the Outwoods is a different type of place - it has footpaths of limited width, attracts a large number of families and dog walkers throughout the day, week and year, and is publicly owned and managed. We also have a set of rules and obligations to follow, set down by the original owners of the land, who so generously set it aside for the residents to enjoy.

Recently, when walking through the woods, in particular along the route requested by the riders, I became convinced that the character of the woods no longer suited large groups of horses and hounds, and as such I was one of the majority of the committee members who took the decision to rescind the Quorn Hunt’s access to the Outwoods permanently.

I hope, over the coming months, that the Outwoods Management Committee continues to focus on the preservation and promotion of the woods to residents, and finds ways to encourage more people to experience its stillness and beauty.

I’m particularly impressed by how many of them have a Loughborough connection, whether it be via the University or College, but I’m also amazed how many other national teams have our former students as their own stars.

We can be proud to have had such an impact across the world, as one of the great sporting centres of excellence, and long may that continue to be the case.

As part of our sporting heritage, the Borough Council holds an annual Sports Awards for residents, which continues to reveal an incredible variety of stars within our own community, but some holding national and international titles.

Nominations for this year’s awards closes on 30th September, and I would urge all of you to think about those you know who are either part of a club, team or individuals, making a sporting impact. There will also be music to enhance the whole experience. On Saturday especially, there will be live performances from organ, piano and small instrumental groups.

The Friends of Charnwood Forest Calke Abbey, History & Gardens Echoes From The Past

We’re Looking For Volunteer Real Nappy Advisors You just need to be passionate about real nappies and want to share that with others.

Talk by Celia Sanger on Monday September 19th 2016 at 7.30 Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall.

Celia is a volunteer at Calke Abbey with several roles. She leads groups of visitors on guided walks of the gardens, talking about history, plants etc. She is part of a recently formed research group and also participates in other activities such as Calke Alive when she represents 17,18,and 19th century members of Calke family, and also now co-ordinates the Calke Talks service.

This is her second year as a NT speaker, and she likes to keep her presentations informal, with a minimum of dates and lots of illustrations.

Her talk covers the history of the gardens from the 18th century to the present time, with a little about the family and the work of the NT in the saving of the gardens over the last 25 years, to the present time.

Away from Calke she is Treasurer for the Ticknall preservation and historical society and a member of the Ticknall garden club, and Ashby historical society.

Before Calke she had a successful craft shop in Ashby for 8 years, before which she worked for a local charity managing a small plant centre at Conkers visitor centre.

Local Author Publishes StarMark Children's Book

While editing StarMark, Katherine wrote a second novel, Kingstone.

She offered it to the same publisher, fully expecting them to wait and see how well the first book performed before making a decision. “But they said yes in the same week that the paperback of StarMark came out!”

Although StarMark’s a fantasy aimed at 9-12 year olds, it has been well received by adult readers too. It tells the story of Irvana, who finds herself alone in a strange city, unaware that she holds the key to a mystery that affects Lord Terenz, current overlord and bearer of the StarMark. When Terenz discovers Irvana has something he wants,

Nicola says, “I started the nappy library to offer the support and advice that I struggled to find when I was expecting my baby about four years ago. I also think it’s important to help people to reduce their waste and save money.

“I hold monthly nappy meets, demonstrations and training to parents and professionals, as well as providing advice and information at events. My Facebook page - The Leicester Cloth Nappy Library - promotes events and activities as well as acting as a forum for advice.

Loughborough author Katherine Hetzel had her debut children’s novel published at the end of May and within two weeks had signed a contract for her second.

“StarMark was a long time in the writing, about eight years, but it’s a story I believed in and worked hard to make the best it could be,” Katherine said. “I was at the point of self-publishing when a friend suggested I send the manuscript to an American independent publisher who was looking to increase their list of children’s titles.

Fortunately for me, they loved the book and offered me a contract.”

That’s why I’m excited to have been asked to visit two secondary schools as part of the Loogabarooga Festival in October.”
