Students at Loughborough High School have been praised as “eloquent, confident and well-educated individuals” in a recent inspection.

Visited by the Independent Schools Inspectorate the school, one of four in the Loughborough Endowed Schools Foundation, achieved an excellent rating across all eight categories.

The categories cover every aspect of school life: pupil achievement, extra-curricular opportunities, quality of teaching, personal development of pupils, pastoral care, health and safety, governance and leadership.

In particular, the inspection lauded the girls themselves, saying, “Pupils leave the school ready to face the challenges which lie before them, and are equipped to face the demands of life beyond school, becoming active citizens of the 21st century. Inspectors also praised the quality of teaching and leadership, which they noted “fulfils the aims of the school to provide an excellent academic education in a caring and supportive atmosphere.”

As a result, it was identified that all students make excellent progress, whatever their ability, with exam results well above average in comparison with other selective schools.

Inspectors observed that pupils felt encouraged and inspired at Loughborough High School, “speak[ing] warmly of the relationship they have with their teachers and feel particularly well supported by them”.

Gwen Byrom, Headteacher of Loughborough High School, said, “The inspection result is a testament to our girls. With high self-esteem and individual self-development being cited as particularly impressive, our pupils leave Loughborough High School with a strong sense of who they

are as people, and what they are capable of.”

Recognition was also given to the school’s effective careers guidance, giving pupils the transferable skills and confidence to follow their desired paths.

Mrs Byrom added, “In today’s society, it is becoming more common for our students to follow multiple different directions over the course of their career. So the fact that the inspection recognised our ability to instill a sense of confidence for the girls to follow their ambition – but with the flexibility to cope with changes in their careers – was fantastic.”

Loughborough High School was also celebrated for its commitment to ensuring all recommendations from the last visit had been met; with its digital focus including the iPad roll out, cited as being particularly beneficial in driving independent learning across all year groups.

The inspection also applauded how the school places a “high value on its relationship with parents,” recognising that strong partnerships are at the heart of the school’s ethos and approach to teaching.

The Governors were praised for having a knowledgeable commitment to the oversight of the school. Mary Gershlick, chair of the Loughborough High School committee, said, “This report reflects so strongly the unique community that is Loughborough High School. It identifies the explicit sense of purpose that defines the school: to resourcefully enable every single girl to achieve their own intellectual potential within a warm, caring, fun and nurturing culture.”

Loughborough will soon be joining hundreds of other towns and cities worldwide to celebrate World Tai Chi and Qigong Day on Saturday 30th April.

People will be gathering in parks everywhere to move and breathe together in the practice of Tai Chi. This ancient Chinese art form uses slow-motion, graceful movements to promote health and well-being.

Charnwood Arts, who are sponsoring the event as part of their 40th Birthday programme said “We have been engaging in projects with China and the Far East for over ten years and are used to seeing many hundreds of people practice Tai-Chi for health in city parks every day.

This is a great opportunity for people from Loughborough and the surrounding area to join in with this fascinating movement practice as a community."

The Loughborough event will take place in Queen’s Park (Granby Street entrance) from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on Saturday 30th April and will include demonstrations and short classes suitable for all ages and abilities.

Reservists Sport New Shirts Sponsored By Local Firm

M-EC has been actively supporting the Reserve Forces since 2013. The practice signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2015 and earlier this year, managing director, Eddie Mewies presented at the annual Partnering with Defence Conference in London.

Protect Your Pets And Get Them Chipped Dog owners in Charnwood are being advised that microchipping their pets will soon become the law.

From Wednesday, April 6, it will be compulsory for all dogs over the age of eight weeks in England to be fitted with a microchip, or owners could face prosecution and a fine of up to £500.

Charnwood Borough Council provides a microchipping service and is encouraging people to get their pets chipped following the changes.

“Reservists have made a positive impact on our business as they are typically strong in character, good leaders and well organised,” added Eddie Mewies. “We were happy to sponsor new kit and congratulate all those who successfully achieve the pass mark. We now look forward to working collaboratively with the squadron to support Armed Forces Day on 25th June.”

Alan Twells, Head of Regulatory Services said: “The vast majority of owners have their dogs chipped already, but it’s now the responsibility of all owners to make sure it’s done. These changes mean a lost dog can be tracked down more easily and that will increase the chances of finding its owner. I’d encourage people to make sure their dog is chipped so they can help keep them safe and comply with the new rules.”

Viva La Musica is a small chamber choir from Loughborough and the surrounding area, performing a wide variety of sacred and secular repertoire, mostly 'a capella'.

Founded in 2002, the choir is currently directed by Simon Lumby. From its rehearsal base at Loughborough’s Trinity Methodist Church, Viva La Musica has in the last few years, become recognised locally as one of the more exciting chamber ensembles operating in the East Midlands. Invitations to sing at churches and Cathedrals are now being prepared for alongside a busy schedule of concerts in and around Leicestershire.

Viva is at Derby Cathedral singing choral evensong at the end of April and is giving a concert ‘Hail Smiling Morn!’ in Ashby Parva, in the south of the County, on May 14th. The beginning of September sees a weekend as the ‘choir in residence’ at Worcester Cathedral, before it starts rehearsing for an exciting new project for Christmas!

Nicky Welcomes Rawlins Academy Student To Loughborough As Part Of International Women’s Day Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan has hosted Rawlins Academy student Sarah Burton at Westminster as part of International Women’s Day to promote greater equality for women in politics and the wider world.

During the day Sarah went to watch and ask questions during a session of the Women and Equalities Select Committee, visit Downing Street and shadowed Nicky for the day.

The group of 66 students from across the UK also took part in a workshop run by Frances Scott, founder of the 50:50 Parliament campaign, and her team which got everyone thinking about how more female representation in Parliament can be achieved.

MPs from the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party all took part in the day.

Nicky commented “It was wonderful to welcome Rawlins Academy student Sarah to Westminster this International Women’s Day. She was a joy to

chat to; both she and I believe that there should no limits to what women and girls can achieve. One of the themes of the day was how we can encourage more female representation in Parliament. You never know, one day we could see Sarah becoming an MP herself!”

Sarah, who took part in the day, added “Travelling to Westminster as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations was hugely enjoyable and I learnt a great deal. I met some inspirational women from lots of different backgrounds and I was also honoured to meet the Prime Minister. It has really inspired me to the best I can possibly be.”

Eastleigh MP Mims Davies, who led the debate in Parliament and organised the day for the MPs and students said “This has been an important day for women across the world and it has shown here in Westminster to all the students who came and to MPs too just what can be achieved and must be achieved if we are to have equality, not just in the numbers of women MPs, but also across the whole of society.”

Five Star Rating For Leicestershire Housebuilder In the national new home customer satisfaction survey, conducted by the NHBC (National House Building Council) for the HBF (Home Builders Federation), Loughborough-based housebuilder, William Davis Homes has been awarded the maximum five stars.

Launched in 2004, the annual survey polls new home owners on a range of subjects including the buying and handover process, design and layout of their property, communication of information from the builder, quality and timekeeping.

Customers are also specifically asked if they would recommend their builder, with the percentage of corresponding answers revealing the final star rating.

William Davis scored in the top percentile, with in excess of 90% of customers choosing to recommend the company.

“To be named a five star housebuilder is hugely significant, not just in terms of our performance compared with the wider industry but mostly as it represents independent, positive feedback from our homeowners,” commented Guy Higgins, managing director.

“Quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and personal service have always been the benchmark for our homes so to see this endorsed with such a high response from our customers is a source of tremendous pride.”

Now in its 81st year, William Davis Homes has developments across the Midlands in Loughborough, Lutterworth, Rugby, Shepshed and Smalley with new developments due to start in Droitwich, Hathern and Rothley later this year. The survey covered the twelve month period from October 2014 to September 2015. William Davis was one of only 14 housebuilders across the UK to be awarded five stars.

Hopes And Dreams At Charnwood Arts

One piece by Tracey Del Greco reflects her childhood by the sea in Wales and a favourite song lamenting the destruction of our environment.

Members of two Charnwood Arts groups will be exhibiting their work at Loughborough's Charnwood Museum from now until the end of May.

Other pieces show butterflies and a summer garden, a hope of things to come, such as Julie's rag rug flower suggesting the lushness of a peony in full bloom.

The textile-based exhibition, entitled "Hopes and Dreams" is a retrospective of work made by the groups RawArt and CAFÉ_space for various projects over the last couple of years.

Materials include found objects such as keys and labels, together with materials that have been donated, including threads, fabrics, buttons and beads.

There are many stories within the works including the fantasy of a treasure island, a seashore and the mysterious depths of a rock pool.

Leaves have been transfer-printed from magazines, capturing snippets of images and text.

This collection of very personal work can be seen in the cafe of the Charnwood Museum, Granby Street, Loughborough until the end of May during the museum's usual opening times.

The RawArt and CAFÉ_space groups meet at Charnwood Arts on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Both groups are designed to promote well-being through creative activity.

The Cardiac Centre Of Excellence On Your Doorstep

Norman Griffiths learns about the exciting research at Leicester’s Hospitals It can come as a shock if you are unfortunate enough to suffer a heart attack or find yourself opposite a consultant who tells you that you need heart surgery.

medications and also the detection of specific particles in the blood released which may help identify patients at risk of kidney damage.

Relatives and friends will rally around and will invariably re-assure you that if it needs to be done, you can’t find a better place to have the procedure than at Glenfield Hospital with its reputation as a centre of excellence. Not only is the quality of care high, the hospital is also home to the University of Leicester British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre (CVRC).

Blood transfusions can play a critical role in heart surgery and the team has identified that microscopic particles may be released from the blood cells during storage. The research involves the washing of blood cells immediately before transfusion to prevent the particles being transferred to the patient.

Research such as this needs patient involvement and to help facilitate this, a Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group dedicated to the cardiac research project has been formed. The group meets to receive and comment on updates from the research teams and to help the professional staff by giving the patient and public perspective.

Members also help make sure communication with patients is clear and easily understood and spread the word about the research that is going on at Leicester’s Hospitals.

Cardiovascular disease kills more than 160,000 people in the UK every year and the CVRC further strengthens and consolidates Leicester’s position as a leading international centre for heart research. It aims to bring together scientists, doctors and patients to improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment available. The team at the CVRC is led by Professor Gavin Murphy, British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Leicester.

“People who undergo heart surgery currently have a risk of suffering organ failure of up to 30 per cent,” he explained. “This is caused by the inevitable trauma and stress the body undergoes during these operations, which can lead to organ damage. Current research is focused on finding new treatments that could be used to try to prevent this organ failure.”

The most affected organs are the heart, kidney and lungs.

Rehabilitation Team to re-develop a website called 'Activate Your Heart', which provides a selfmanagement tool for people who are getting themselves back on track after a heart attack or other cardiac event.

“Having been through the experience myself, I was able to give my perspectives on what information people in that situation benefit from knowing, including increasing their activity levels to build confidence,” he said. “A few years on it is extremely rewarding to see the website helping so many people to get through what can be a tough time.”

Terry Finnigan, a Groby resident of 20 years, is another prime example. Fourteen years ago he suffered a heart attack and collapsed at a Jubilee Party.

He was lucky, as there were four nurses there who gave him lifesaving resuscitation until an ambulance took him to hospital. Three weeks later he had surgery at Glenfield Hospital and had a miniature Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) inserted which automatically sends a shock to restart his heart if it stops beating.

Terry is well aware that events could have gone the other way.

His gratitude for such a lifesaving intervention and the extra years of active life it has given him have found expression in the tireless volunteer work he does for Leicester’s Hospitals. And with a background as a semi-professional entertainer in Leicester he knows just how to put patients at ease and even put a smile on an anxious face. “I got involved with the PPI group a few years ago and so far am 'spreading the word' regarding Professor Gavin Murphy and the wonderful benefits of his research.”

“A Bigger Cycling Event With Two New Routes” Promises Organisers Of MME Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride Having organised the Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride for the past five years Emma Hallam and her colleague Zoe Edwards have decided to liven things up a little bit.

Explains Emma, “We are thrilled to welcome on board a brand new headline sponsor, Protection by MME, and with their support we are able to make this a bigger event this year. We have decided to include a new 10 mile and a 50 mile cycle route which will complement our existing 20 mile route. The 10 mile route will provide an entry level distance for first time participants, whilst the 50 mile route will be a longer and more challenging route for those who want to push themselves further.”

Commenting on their sponsorship, Peter Simpson of MME said, “MME in association with Vitality Health sees this as an ideal event to partner with as we help encourage an active lifestyle and offer rewards for doing so. The event also raised £7,500 for Alex’s Wish, a local Rothley based charity who raise money to fund clinical trials into finding treatments and, ultimately, a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a life limiting condition which affects boys across the UK including Emma’s son Alex, after whom the charity is named.

“We are incredibly well supported locally and it’s always nice to see our supporters out and about on their bikes, having fun and raising much needed funds for Alex’s Wish,” adds Emma.

The start and finish line is at The Rothley Centre in Rothley, Leicestershire with the route taking place on open roads. “The route is well sign-posted,” explains Emma, “and because

the event takes place on a Sunday morning the roads tend to be quiet with traffic. The circular route starts and finishes in Rothley village and has been carefully chosen to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment. It is fairly challenging in parts and the 20 and 50 mile includes a steep climb up Beacon Hill road. There are plenty of marshals along the way to give you lots of moral support and encouragement.

Growing In The Veg Patch

Although the mornings are still a little chilly, the sun is with us longer each day and the temperature is finally warming up, so my mind is turning to my kitchen garden aka the veg patch at the bottom of my garden. I’ve loved growing my own fruit and vegetables since a spent time in the family garden with my Dad as a child. I liked nothing more than spending the day in the garden raising seedlings and watching them grow.

It’s no surprise then that when I’m not designing gardens or offering advice to clients I’m busy tending my own garden – it’s 24/7 for me!

With my heated propagator set up in the greenhouse it is now stuffed with pots and trays with seed and seedlings at various stages.

The first thing I sow in February is my Chilli and Pepper seeds, although I didn’t have much success this year and I think they didn’t have enough heat early on. Still, my Tomatoes have germinated well. This year I’ve sown ‘Sungold’ and ‘Cuor de Bue’ which are my favourites.

The first provides masses of delicious sweet/sour orange fruit throughout the summer and the later bares huge fist sized pink-red fruit great for slicing and roasting for soups, stews and curries. Once they are large

enough I’ll prick them out, pot them on until they are good and strong before lining them out in the greenhouse border.

I’ve had varying success germinating Cucumbers and Melons over the years so now i buy small plants to grow on which will join the Tomatoes in the warmth of the greenhouse. I’m trying some fast growing Broccoli in there too this year. 40 day ‘Raabi’ promises tender flower stalks, stems and leaves in no time so I’m squeezing in a crop before the tomatoes take their place.

For the outdoor veg patch I’m raising, Chinese Broccoli, summer Purple Sprouting and the traditional spring cropping Purple Spouting too – I love my broccoli as you can tell! There’ll be Courgettes in green and yellow too and Squashes to store like ‘Sweet Dumpling’ and ‘Honey Bear’ perfect for roasting with chilli in the winter months.

No veg patch is complete without beans and mine is no exception. I love French beans and this year I’ll be growing the climbing variety ‘Cobra’ as I find that dwarf varieties tend to get muddy. I favour the Runner Bean ‘Moonlight’ which unusually has white flowers. I find it to be very prolific whatever the weather and belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

produces long tender beans with great flavour. I sow these in early May so that they are ready to be planted out when the frosts have passed later in the month.

I love being able to pop into the garden to pick salad, so I’ll be sowing lots as per usual, including loose leaf, butterhead lettuce and endive varieties to give a variety of leaf shapes, colours and textures. Rocket grows well although it can bolt quickly as the summer arrives. I find an early sowing direct into the soil at this time of year does well. Annual herbs are a must for me too, so Basil and coriander will be sown and grown in the comfort of the greenhouse.

I like to try something new each year, so I’ve sown Florence Fennel and some sugar snap peas in the greenhouse and once they are strong enough they will be planted outside to fill out ready for a delicious harvest in midsummer. I’m looking forward to a tasty summer!

Next month I’ll be looking at what is available in the garden centres to provide a seasonal splash of colour for summer.

Teams Race To Sign Up For The Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge!

Companies, clubs and organisations from across the region are getting their teams together and signing up to take part in this year’s eagerly anticipated Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge.

Now in its eighth year, the Dagon Boat Challenge takes place on the River Trent at the Victoria Embankment on Sunday 7th August and has become one of the key attractions of the Riverside Festival.

Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young people provides vital help, care and support for children across the East Midlands with terminal and life-limiting conditions. By taking part in the Dragon Boat Challenge to raise money for Rainbows, the teams will be helping families form Nottinghamshire and across the region to make the most of the time they have left together and create memories they can treasure forever.

One of the early entrants this year and dragon boat firsttimers are Graphic Packaging International from Bardon in Leicestershire. The company makes cardboard packaging for the food and beverage industry and employs 1,300 staff in the UK including 365 at the Bardon site. Training & HR Advisor, Kerry Bradbury is keen to make the most of the team building and fund raising opportunity. She says, “GPI Bardon get involved in charity work all through the year and we have recently appointed a Philanthropist to coordinate and raise funds for charities. The event is in aid of a good cause and we thought what better way to get people involved than a fun team building exercise? ‘GPI Warriors’ and our supporters are very excited to be taking part in this fantastic event and aim to raise as much money as possible to support Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People and the amazing work that they do”.

Tom Stanyard, Corporate Partnership Fundraiser at Rainbows, said, “It’s because of people like you that Rainbows can keep our doors open. Only a small amount of our funding is guaranteed, that’s why our supporters and fundraisers are so important. Grantham Hospital (Grantham), two teams from Warburtons (Langley Mill) and Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. Noble Foods and CR Civil Engineering have both chosen to take out Silver entries which include the profile and fundraising benefits of their company logo on each side of a dragon boat as well as a £500 donation to Rainbows.

The top fundraisers for Rainbows will win the Charity trophy plus a special prize meal kindly donated by The Riverbank Bar & Kitchen, situated at Trent Bridge, not far from where the Challenge takes place.

Confronting Dementia It can be difficult being diagnosed or having a loved one diagnosed with dementia but as a lady living with dementia keeps telling us, “You’ve just got to get on with what you are dealt with in life”. You can still continue to have lots of laughs, make new friends and learn more about one another whilst living with dementia. Isn’t that what life is all about? Dementia describes a range of diseases to the brain. The most common disease is Alzheimer’s, followed by vascular dementia. However, it can be caused by other diseases such as Parkinson’s. Memory loss and confusion are the most well-known symptoms but a wide range of other symptoms can also exist. These include mood and behaviour changes and difficulties in concentrating, communicating and reasoning.

No two people will have the same experience and different people encounter symptoms in different ways. In many ways dementia can take the brakes off somebody’s underlying personality traits; you can really get to know your nearest and dearest! A person with dementia seldom lies, and if you are honest they often just say what we are thinking, which can be both refreshing if not sometimes embarrassing.

There are very few treatments, so why bother getting a diagnosis?

Firstly it can allay the concerns of the individual, secondly it can prepare them and their family for the future, but most importantly it allows you to access a wide range of experienced, caring and supportive people who understand dementia and the journey you will travel through.

These people can help everybody learn how to communicate effectively with one another and to adapt their lifestyles. Boredom and anxiety are common effects for people living with dementia and their primary family carer.

Sharing photographs/memorabilia and reminiscing can bring back happy memories. Get to know

your loved one with dementia again and don’t be afraid to try a range of new things and enlist the help of dementia Mind for You experts. Living with dementia does not mean you can’t be introduced to new people and things and embrace new experiences.

If you would like to know more about dementia you can become a dementia friend or go on an awareness course. The different types of support available in your area can be found by contacting your local Alzheimer’s society, your carers champion linked to your GP, speaking about dementia in your local community or speaking to us. Just remember to talk to one another, get to know dementia, understand the local support available and enlist the help of people experienced with dementia. Dementia does not need to be something to shy away from; together we can confront this disease and its symptoms and continue to create happy memories both now and in the future.

Loogabarooga Festival Returns For Longer This October In Loughborough Children’s Illustrated Literature Festival adds extra day and will be held in the town over six days from 19-24 October 2016 The six-day Loogabarooga Festival of Children’s Illustrated Literature will return to Loughborough from 19-24 October 2016.

The Loogabarooga Festival has been extended from the five-day event last year and is for families who love books and illustrated literature. Following the success of the inaugural Festival in 2015, this year’s programme will include free creative drop-in workshops, storytelling sessions, advice on how to write and illustrate your own book, with appearances from some of the nation’s favourite children’s authors and illustrators including Harry Potter illustrator, Jim Kay, Alastair Watson presenting The Dinosaur That Pooped by members of supergroup, McBusted, and a Clangers workshop to coincide with a new CBeebies series.

Following their popular debut appearance at last year’s Festival, the unique, hand-painted Book Benches will also return. In 2015, they featured the cover artwork of some of the nation’s

favourite Ladybird children’s stories including Shopping with Mother, Cinderella and Bunnikins Picnic Party, and were located throughout the town. This year, a new competition will be launched for the public to nominate their favourite Ladybird book with the most popular title forming the artwork for a new Book Bench.

The Loogabarooga Festival will be organised by Charnwood Borough Council in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, Leicester Shire Promotions and supported by Love Loughborough.

The Government recently announced local councils would receive £50million to fill 1 million potholes across the country.

This includes £717,000 for Leicestershire County Council which will enable them to fill over 13,500 potholes. I am sure we all have holes we would like to see replaced and I am lobbying the County Council to prioritise re-surfacing works for the Ashby Road in Loughborough running from the roundabout near the University towards Sainsbury’s.

I’ve had a number of cyclists contact me to say how bad that particular road is.

Environment Agency staff. The Environment Agency has been working on its overall flooding plan for the town and I am waiting to hear what the final proposals are so I can then press Ministers for funding.

Over the past few years I have written often about why it's important that people access the services they want from their council as easily as possible.

The two-tier structure that exists through much of England, with Borough and County Councils running different services is a hard one to promote or defend - it also makes it harder for residents to know who to contact.

At the start of March I was delighted to welcome Life Sciences Minister, George Freeman MP, to the Charnwood Campus. He invited the owners to become the first Life Science Opportunity Zone in the country.

Later in March we heard in the Budget announcements that the Government intends, subject to business case, to support the Loughborough and Leicester Enterprise Zone bid. This is very welcome news for our area and will help to attract further significant investment and employers to our town and county enabling them to create further jobs.

The funding has been made available to councils as part of the Government’s £250 million Pothole Action Fund included in last month’s Budget, which will see over four million potholes fixed by 2020/21, and is part of the Government’s plan to invest in our national infrastructure.

Most residents I talk to simply refer to 'the Council' when they talk about social services, rubbish collection, grass cutting or who they pay their council tax to - and yet those services, and dozens more, are actually split between two different organisations, employing different staff, based in different locations, with a separate set of councillors - but serving the same residents.

I was also pleased to take representatives of the Storer & Ashby Residents Group to meet the Housing and Planning Minister, Brandon Lewis MP last month. We discussed a number of planning and related issues including the conduct of Plans Committee Meetings.

Representing the views of residents to Ministers and, if I can, enabling people to put their views personally to Ministers, is a key part of my job as your local MP.

I recently attending a meeting between the Environment Agency and Loughborough residents to discuss the recent near-flooding of the Woodbrook in Loughborough in early March. Disaster was only averted through the quick actions of volunteer flood wardens and those who stepped in to keep the brook clear as the water rose so quickly despite monitoring visits that evening from the

Over the past couple of years Charnwood has been working with Leicestershire County Council to try to resolve some of those barriers or gaps in services by establishing a Combined Authority, to try to smooth the edges between the two councils.

Whether this is enough to make services more accessible to residents is still to be proven, and there are strong arguments for looking at single tier local governments, and asking whether those work better for residents.

However, there is still more that can be done within Charnwood Borough Council, for residents of Loughborough and beyond, and we will soon decide on whether to make greater use of the IT we have invested in, to improve access to the Council. It should be as easy to access the Borough Council's services via your smartphone or computer as it is to order a pizza, or access or bank, whilst retaining the current option of talking to an council employee directly, or visiting the council offices.

On the other side, if your neighbour has submitted an application, and they haven't discussed it with you, and you feel that it is likely to have an affect on your property - talk to them try to persuade them to amend the application to accommodate your concerns, and if they won't, contact the planning team at Charnwood dealing with the application to discuss it. Also check the Council's website for what are legitimate reasons to object in planning law - unless you frame your objections within the law, they won't be heard with any effect. Failing all of that - contact your local councillor!

What disappoints me is that applications are often submitted without there being any discussion with the neighbour affected which, not surprisingly, can cause angst and frustration. I sometimes get told by applicants that "my architect/surveyor told me not to discuss it with the neighbour before the application" - bad advice! My recommendation, if you are considering an extension to your home, is; always talk to your neighbour before you start - you don't have to do everything they suggest, but by talking about why you want to extend, and what you're trying to achieve, you are much, much more likely to get their support and understanding.
