AUTISM Awareness Across Leicestershire

Raising Autism Awareness

Organisations who have already pledged their support to help raise much needed awareness include Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Autistic Society, Autism East Midlands, RNIB College, Homefield College, Charnwood Borough Council, Attenborough Arts but to name a few.

Glebe House Chief Executive, Peter Warlow stated, “Whilst general awareness of autism is much higher in recent times, research shows that there remains a lack of understanding about what it really means to live with autism, not only for the person with autism but also for those who care for them and live with them.“ He went on to say, “Whether it’s at school, within businesses or in social settings, people with autism are still misunderstood. We are asking organisations across Leicestershire, what they are doing to help raise autism awareness.“ Events include a ‘Living with Autism’ Conference on the 30th March hosted by Leicestershire Autistic Society at the NSPCC Training Centre, Leicester, followed by a worldwide initiative to ‘Light up in Blue’ as we countdown to World Autism Awareness Day. A charity event hosted by Fusion Lifestyle Loughborough will celebrate autism within the community on the 2nd April. Autism East Midlands will be hosting a ‘Pathway to Adulthood’ conference on the 25th April at Glebe House, Loughborough and Contact a Family will run a ‘Challenging Behaviour’ Workshop on the 26th April.

Coalville Town Ravenettes Premier League Trophy Visit

Magic was in the air at the Coalville Town Ravenettes training at the Hermitage Leisure Centre 3G pitches as it was much more than an average training session. Thanks to the hard work of Amanda Perry, the one and only Premier League Trophy was brought down by officials from Premier League champions Leicester City to the delight of a huge crowd. All the girls’ teams were present as well as a few boys’ sides and many other visitors.

It was a damp evening in Whitwick, however this didn’t deter the excitable congregating crowd as the sense of anticipation grew whilst waiting for the arrival of the trophy. The sheer amount of Ravenettes present demonstrated how far they have come in the past few years, and will no doubt continue to grow, with the future looking bright for the Coalville girls’ sides as they aim to become one of the biggest girls’ clubs in Leicestershire.

It was a wonderful occasion with a brilliant atmosphere, with there being plenty of kickabouts taking place, as well as a cake sale to satisfy any peckish visitors. It was really a once in a lifetime experience for many, with everyone eager for their picture to be taken with the gloriously

blue and gold ribboned trophy.

Everyone managed to do so as the officials kindly allowed the trophy to remain for a considerable amount of time, this also meant there was time for a number of team photos for the young Coalville sides, which will be treasured for years to come.

There were a number of special guests present (pictured above).

Leicester City under 23 captain and local lad Elliot Moore, Coalville Town Ravenettes secretary councillor Alison Smith and councillors Geary and Johnson all gave their support to the event and posed for a picture with the founder of the Ravenettes and u13 manager Wayne McDermott and the captains of all the Ravenette teams and a selection of young Ravens sides.

Coalville Town Ravenettes have taken huge strides in the last few years and now have multiple successful sides including Leicestershire junior sports team of the year, the u13 Ravenettes.

The Ravenettes are always looking to take on new girls of the age of 8 or upwards, regardless of their ability or playing experience.

SMIGFEST 2017

Whitwick And District U3A The next General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be held on Friday 17th March when the speaker will be Bob Massey.

This will be a return visit from Bob and we look forward to another of his presentations. The focus of this talk is the history of radio and television programmes for children and it has the wonderfully evocative title: "Are You Sitting Comfortably?".

This famous phrase began the radio programme “Listen with Mother” broadcast on the BBC Light Programme. Also on the radio was “Children’s Favourites” on Saturday mornings when children could request favourite songs such as “Nellie the Elephant”. On TV, popular programmes from the 1950s included “Crackerjack!” and “The Adventures of Robin Hood”, with its unforgettable signature tune.

No doubt Bob’s talk will bring back many pleasant memories of these and other programmes.

The General Meeting also provides an ideal opportunity to meet existing members of Whitwick and District U3A and see the possibilities available. The U3A is a self-help organisation for retired people where learning and social activities can be enjoyed in a convivial environment. As the U3A movement is non-political and non-religious, everyone is welcome. Whitwick and District U3A is a thriving and friendly group with a wide variety of Interest Groups catering for most tastes. Retirement does not need to be dull. Besides, spring is a time to think about new beginnings and getting out and about once again.

This live music event is held annually now in memory of a local man, Steven Smith, who died in 2014, aged just 42, leaving his wife Emma and young daughter Isabelle. Steven had been suffering with apparent digestion problems for a little while in August 2014, and was told by his GP that it was acid reflux indigestion, However he was taken very ill on Saturday 30th August. He was rushed into the LRI A&E department, but was diagnosed as having a massive heart attack, and very shortly afterwards transferred urgently to Glenfield General, where they tried to treat him, but they soon realized that he needed much more specialist help than even they could provide. On Monday 1st September he was blue light transferred to Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire. There he spent the next 10 days in their critical care unit, sadly dying on September 11th.

Quote from Emma and family: Whilst he was at Papworth his wife Emma and some of his close family and a very close friend stayed there with him. The care that Steven received was superb, and the care and compassion shown to all of us whilst there was beyond anything we could have expected, or indeed had ever experienced before. Those 10 days were some of the hardest we’ve had to endure, and the staff, from the housekeeping staff right to the very senior consultants and surgeons were superb. Their compassion, humanity and feeling for both Steven and us were outstanding.

This, although in Steven’s case was not to bear fruition in his recovery, is the reason this event is being held again, following on the success of Smigfest 2015 and 2016. Emma asked for donations in lieu of flowers at Steven’s funeral, and that combined with the results from both Smigfests has resulted in just over £11000 being given so far to the Papworth Hospital Charity Trust. Steven had a great love of music, across all genres, and he was an accomplished cornetist himself, having played in several local

bands. He won a cornet playing contest at the age of 10, playing a solo piece entitled "Rusalka's Song to the moon", by Anton Dvorak, and was asked to play the piece again, solo, in front of James Shepherd, considered by many to be the finest ever cornetist.

He then went on to play in the South Midlands (Co-Op) Band, the William Davis Construction Brass Band, Croft Silver Band, and Desford Colliery Brass Band.

It was because of this love of music that an old school friend of Steven’s, Ray Whitmore, of Big Rock Promotions, suggested that they could promote a music festival in his memory, and help to raise more funds for Papworth.

Smigfest was the result. All the monies raised from these events goes to the Papworth Trust, and are used to try to enhance the care and welfare of patients in their care, and to bridge the gap between NHS funding and the actual costs of providing such world leading equipment and expertise. About 50% of these total costs come from donations.

Without such monies Papworth could not be where it is in the world today.

Big Rock Promotions are a North West Leicestershire group of volunteers who specialise in hosting high quality live music events for local charities and good causes.

In 2016 Big Rock alone supported a number of events and helped raise over £60,000 for a variety of projects throughout North West Leicestershire. From the musicians, singers, sound engineers, to lighting engineers, stage crew and support teams, we are extremely lucky to have such a fantastic team of people who are willing to give up their free time to support the fundraising we undertake.

There is such a wealth of talent within North West Leicestershire and it's humbling to have so many people who wish to take part to help events like Smigfest.

Council’s Pay And Display Machines Will Accept New £1 Coins Drivers using North West Leicestershire District Council car parks will be able to use the new £1 coin without concern, as all pay and display machines have received an upgrade.

The upgrade of all 28 pay and display machines in 17 car parks across the district cost a total of £980 and means that the new 12 sided £1 coins can be used immediately when they come into circulation.

The Royal Mint will bring 1.5 billion of the coins, which are made of two metals and feature a hologram-like image and a hidden security feature, into circulation on 28 March 2017.

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We want to reassure our residents and visitors that they will be able to use the new pound coins in the machines and will have no issues. We like to be prepared and have sorted this potential issue out nice and early.

Of course, you don’t have to pay anything now after 3pm in our Coalville car parks, as part of our Free after 3pm initiative.”

Store Raises Over £3,000 For Local Animal Charity Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicester branch of the RSPCA – has been presented with a cheque for £3,106.73 by the Pets at Home, Fosse Park store.

Employees and customers raised the money through their ‘Santa Paws’ appeal which ran during December. Nationally, the appeal which aims to support rescue centers, particularly over the festive period, raised an astonishing £1,064,064.86 with customers making donations in stores, online and by text.

Leicestershire's Food Surplus Redistribution Project Strides Forward In 2017 Backed by Leicestershire County Council, Plan Zheroes is operating a food redistribution project across the county.

A free and easy to use on-line tool helps businesses of all types and sizes divert quality surplus food away from the waste stream.

Local charities receive alerts about the available food, and collect it for use in a range of social projects from breakfast clubs and day centres to crisis centres and homeless shelters. Signed agreements ensure the fair and safe transport, storage and use of the food, giving all parties full confidence in the scheme.

The food and drink industry's commitment to tackling food waste continues to grow.

Agreements such as the Courtauld Commitment 2025 and WRAP's Hospitality and Food Service Agreement encourage the industry to address the £5bn cost of waste in food manufacture and retail. In the borough of Melton, the council promotes the

Plan Zheroes project as an ideal sustainability tool for food and hospitality businesses wishing to save money, reduce waste and fulfil their corporate social responsibility targets. Businesses and community groups from Loughborough, Coalville, Oadby and Wigston have also joined the network to share surplus food.

Commenting on the project, Jim Worley, Head of Regulatory Services at Melton Borough Council said: “Plan Zheroes is a great and simple way to reduce food waste in our communities.

To strengthen our sustainability efforts, the Melton Food Enterprise Zone is proud to support the project, as it provides food and drink businesses with an innovative way to have a positive social and environmental impact while reducing their own costs in waste management. Melton Borough Council is committed to encourage initiatives like Plan Zheroes, that drive sustainability and foster responsible business practices.”

As part of the Fosse Park store’s charity appeal, Deputy Store Manager Jamie Sands also made the ultimate sacrifice by shaving his hair and beard. Three years of growth was ceremoniously shorn by their in-store pet groomers, the Groom Room.

He said: “The success of the work we do, and the impact we have, both on the animals and the local community, can only be achieved with the support of local people and businesses within Leicestershire and Rutland. It’s fantastic when local businesses get behind us; we are so very grateful for the support from all the fantastic employees and customers at Pets at Home Fosse Park. Their incredible donation had a very positive impact for the animals in our care this year, they all had a very special Christmas indeed.”

Wyatt Calls On County Highways To Sort Out Our Roads Liberal Democrat County Councillor has attacked the Tory County Council for wasting taxpayers money due to patching up roads then weeks later having to return due to poor workmanship.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said "Many bus stops are becoming dangerous for users and bus drivers. Many of our Roads seriously need attention. We cannot continue to keep cutting back and patching up which is only costing more in the long term. This bus stop in Greenhill has been patched up four times, and within a few weeks its even worse. This short term fix is clearly not working."

New Skate Park In Greenhill Secured Thanks To Wyatt Cllr Michael Wyatt a few years ago worked alongside some local children from Greenhill to help save and improve the local facilities on the playing field off Cropston Drive. It's taken till now to finally see this project finished.

Coalville Library’s Construction Club!

Coalville Library hosted its second Construction Club on Saturday 4th March 10.30am-12.00pm. For only £1 per child, children could play with LEGO and embrace their creative side, letting their imagination run wild!

Due to the popularity of the club, we are now making the club fortnightly and you will also need to book a place in advance to attend the session.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "I am delighted to announce it's finally completed and I would like to thank everyone who engaged with the District Council officers so they could deliver what was needed for the local children of the area."

The next Construction Club will take place on Saturday 18th March, 10.30-12.00pm at Coalville Library. The club is suitable for children aged 6-12 years, however, all families are welcome. Tips From The Toolbox How To Make Jam – Easily!

For many people, jam making is as much a passion as it is a hobby. It is a wonderful way of preserving seasonal fruit to be enjoyed the whole year, while some jammakers simply enjoy giving their decorated jars as thoughtful gifts.

Jam as we know it emerged in the 19th Century. Before sugar became a reliable and cheap source from the West Indies, it was considered a spice and consequently a luxury only the wealthy could afford. Preserves made from sugar were too precious to spread thickly on toast; instead they were presented on delicate silver spoons at the end of a feast and were called “spoon sweets”. Jam reached the masses in the 1880’s when it was used to make the dark wholemeal bread eaten by the working classes more appealing.

For a first attempt at jam-making, I recommend using fruits naturally high in pectin as these will allow a good set without the addition of jam sugar or powdered pectin.

High pectin fruits include apples, cranberries, gooseberries, plums, damsons, citrus fruits, blackcurrants, redcurrants and quinces.

Low pectin fruits (strawberries, raspberries, peaches, blueberries and blackberries) are often combined with those with a higher level of pectin to help it set.

(ashbytoolbox) I have created an easy recipe using a few plums which should yield a 1lb (454g) jar of jam. As we are using a small amount of fruit, you should be ok with a lidded saucepan with a heavy base. You will need: 12oz (340g) of plums (stones removed) under ripe or just ripe is best – (approx. 4 medium) 12oz (340g) of granulated white sugar (caster sugar also works) 1 tablespoon of water Before preparing the fruit, place a small plate in the fridge. This will be used to check the setting point later.

The good news for someone starting out making their own jam is that you can get away with using equipment you’re likely to have in your own kitchen.

1. Wash plums and cut into quarters.

2. Place fruit together with the water in a heavy based pot (I used a 20cm diameter saucepan).Add the lid and bring to the boil.

Basic terms and what they mean: Jam: chopped fruit cooked with sugar, boiled gently but quickly and sealed for long term storage.

3. Simmer on a very low heat until the plums have softened (approx.

20mins) stir every now and then to prevent fruit sticking and burning.

While the fruit bubbles away, sterilise a jam jar. Wash in hot soapy water, rinse and place in the oven at 180° (fan 160° or gas mark 4) while still wet for 15 minutes.

Pectin: a gelatine-like ingredient commonly used to thicken and gel jams, jellies and preserves. It is found naturally in fruits, but can also be bought in a powdered form.

4. Now remove the saucepan lid, keep on a low heat and add the sugar. Stir continuously until the sugar has dissolved. (You can check this by running a wooden spoon across the base of the pan. It should feel smooth. If it scratches or feels “gritty”, the mix needs a little more time)

Bulbs For The Summer Whilst I write, there are flurries of snow passing my office window accompanied by the chirrup of birds hoping for the temperature to rise soon. We may be in the depths of a cold spell this week but I know that by the time you read this, March will be upon us and the sun will be shining more often and those birds will be busy finding spaces to nest.

Eucomis A weird and wonderful looking bulb whose flowers resemble Pineapples! These are very large bulbs and consequently can be quite pricy but they are worth it.

They need a well drained garden soil or can be grown in pots which helps to display them. Eucomis bicolour is a favourite of mine with green-cream blooms edged with burgundy. Newer cultivars include ‘Sparkling Burgundy’ which has purple foliage and purple-pink flowers on tall spikes. Both are worth seeking out.

Enter any nursery, garden centre or DIY store now and there will be rows of shiny packets with pictures promising bright and colourful blooms later in the summer. It’s worth thinking ahead now and picking up a few of these bulbs/tubers to give colour later in the year.

Cannas These unassuming tubers grow to the most spectacular exotic looking plants by mid-late summer.

Ideal for containers on the patio they give a summer holiday feel.

The foliage is broad and comes in shades of green, bronze and purple. Topping tall flower stems, vibrant blooms unfurl in bold fiery shade of red, orange, coral and yellow. Not fully hardy, these need protection from frost so it is best to start them off with some shelter.

I hope I’ve tempted you to pick up a few bulbs/tubers and have a go at growing them yourself. Next month I’ll be getting to grips with common garden weeds, looking at annual and perennials and the best ways to eradicate them.

Crocosmia These can often be found on offer as bulbs in the spring and offer the chance to grow them very cheaply rather than buy ready grown plants later in the year. I favour the shorter varieties for use in borders. C. ‘George Davidson’ is a sunshine gold-orange which teams well with lots of the late summer hot coloured perennials and ornamental grasses.

Lilies Summer wouldn’t be summer without Lilies in the garden perfuming the air with their intoxicating fragrance. The orientalis species has a huge array of colours to choose from and have a distinctive scent. The pixie lilies are ideal for containers as they flower on short stems, although some lack fragrance.

For those who like their plants super sized, the Regale Lilies or the recently introduced Tree Lilies carry large flowers of tall stems and are really showy.

Dahlias I’ve already been tempted by Dahlias this year and have 5 tubers awaiting potting to join the half or dozen or so I have lifted and stored from previous years. I particularly like Pompom dahlias with their neat and compact blooms which i find fit well in to small-medium arrangements or vases. I’m often taken by the promise of the large cactus and decorative Dahlias which can bear blooms the size of dinner plates! I do struggle to fit these in to my vases though and think they are better used as a decorative border plant rather than for cut flowers for me. I’ll be trying ‘Burlesca’ this year which is a new variety with pink-coral pompom heads. ‘Wizard of Oz’ was my

Budding Bakers In The Mix For Easter Bake Off Budding bakers at Ibstock Community College have been competing in the first round of the college’s Easter bake off.

Students have been challenged to design, make and decorate the best Easter cupcakes.

Entries will be judged not only on appearance but on taste, technique and texture.

Linda Higginson, head of design and technology who is

overseeing the competition, said: “The standard in the first round was very high and we are looking forward to seeing what the other students come up with over the next few weeks.”

The bake off is one of a series of inter-House competitions running this term.

All students are a member of one of four Houses: Brunel, Da Vinci, Nightingale and Shakespeare.

Watermead Challenge 2017 This year’s Watermead Challenge charity run is being held at 7pm on Tuesday 11th July 2017.

There are the usual five and three mile courses. Race Director, Chris Battye commented “ The two distances appeal to a range of abilities from novice runners to the more experienced. The flat lakeside course is popular as it offers the chance to achieve a personal best time.”

This year’s proceeds will be shared between the Leicester Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) and Loughborough based Mosaic Disability Services.

The event, organised by the Wreake Valley and Syston Rotary Clubs, attracted about 400 runners in 2016. Full entry details can be found at www.wreakevalleyrotary.org.uk

Watermead Challenge 2017 Virtual Field Work, Meditation And More On Humanities Day Humanities students at Ibstock Community College visited Moscow, the Great Wall of China and the tallest skyscraper on Earth – all without leaving the comfort of their classroom.

The virtual reality field work was made possible by the Google Expeditions Pioneer Programme.

Students used virtual reality headsets to explore the three locations. Teachers acted as guides, leading students through

360’, 3D images of the sites and pointing out details of interest.

The Google expedition was part of a full day of humanities activities for all students.

This included a practical meditation session, a model building workshop, and a history quiz where students researched answers using their own mobile devices.

Carl Edwards, head of humanities, said: “The humanities day was absolutely fantastic. We have had so much positive feedback.

“One student said he felt as if he had actually visited the places that we saw on our Google expedition.

Others said they found the meditation very calming and that it helped them to unwind.”

Advances in technology such as keyhole surgery means hospital stays are shorter and its common sense that people want to send as little time in hospital as possible as they recover faster in their own homes.

Locally I know of the concerns raised when the Ashby Community Hospital closed. As I made clear at the time, this could only be justified if the money used to run the hospital could be better used treating patients in the home using a virtual ward system and that there continues to be adequate local provision at locations such as in Coalville for whom a return home is not yet practical. Our CCG remains committed to delivering services at Coalville Hospital and his is a valuable facility for this area which could and should serve as an urgent out of hours service to help ease demand on A and E

In order to spend taxpayers money in the most efficient and effective way, the Five Year Forward View, produced by the NHS itself, sets out its own vision for the future. Its vision is one where the NHS provides more care closer to home, prioritises prevention and empowers citizens with the tools and information to manage their own care.

In each of 44 local areas, NHS commissioners and providers have come together to decide how to improve services and realise this vision. Far from being secret, STPs were publicly announced by NHS England in December 2015. These plans are not about making cuts, but to ensure that increased resources for the NHS lead directly to better care for patients.

All plans have been published and are being consulted on. One area of significant concern in the Staffordshire STP is the option of reducing the Burton A and E to just an urgent care centre. This is a totally unacceptable plan with half of people in North West Leicestershire relying on Burton's hospital and needing its services at the A&E. I and my Parliamentary colleagues are campaigning strongly against the proposal and I would ask anyone who feels the same way to sign the petition www.saveburtonaande.com The issues in Accident and Emergency departments have been prominent in the news and there is no doubt services have

The Sustainability and Transformation plan here in Leicestershire highlights the Better Care Together programme working under the principle of ‘Home First’ for recovery from treatment as that where patients tell them that’s where they want to be. Locally our Clinical Commissioning group want more care to be delivered at a primary level, i.e via your GP rather than using hospitals for minor procedures. These are principles I think most of us would agree with.

I am of course aware of the significant issues and pressure on the Health Service. It is essential that health and social care works in a more joined up way, we need to better inform people of the most appropriate pathway for treatment and we have to maintain increased investment.

We have an aging population and it is essential that the NHS evolves in order meet the ever increasing demands for its services.
