After spending 25 years in the Army as a Movement Controller, Ian found he missed it too much and joined the Reserves, where he has been a Staff Sergeant for two years.

“My job in the Army was to plan the movement of the main units for operations. The biggest move I controlled was from Brunei to Afghanistan, which involved moving equipment over land, sea and air. I started to gain plumbing skills whilst in the Army, and when I left, the council supported me to get my portfolio together, which allowed me to qualify. I found I missed the comradery of the Army, so joined the Reserves.”

Reservists, who make up around one sixth of the Armed Forces, give up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces, balancing their civilian life with a military career, making sure they are ready to serve as part of the military if needed.

Ian trains one or two weekends each month with the Reserve Forces and would encourage individuals to look in to it and businesses to support their employees if they want to join up.

“There aren’t many Reserves in Leicestershire – last time I checked, I was one of only two. It’s good fun and you really feel part of a team, whilst also being able to do the ‘day’ job.”

North West Leicestershire District Council has signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant, which means it works to support past, present and future members of the Armed Forces and their families.

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader of the Council and Armed Forces Champion, said: “Our Armed Forces are supported in lots of different ways, and the Reserve Forces make an important contribution to our operations across the world. As a council, we are proud to support Ian in both his career with us and his contribution to the Armed Forces. I’m pleased customers have welcomed Ian into their homes in his uniform, so we can help raise the profile of the valuable work that Reservists do.”

Swithland Show 2017

Thringstone House Community Centre

The hugely popular Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show will, again, be held at the usual venues of The Griffin Inn and Swithland School on Saturday 9th September. The show opens to visitors at 1.30pm.

A new era started for the well known Thringstone House Community Centre on 23rd June when, at a cabinet meeting of Leicestershire County Council, their trusteeship of the centre was formally dissolved after over 70 years.

Last years show, our 40th, was a huge success and we raised in excess of a staggering £9000.00 for our chosen charities which include Rainbows and LOROS plus many other local charities.

For this we thank all of our visitors, contestants and sponsors.

We are looking forward to another great show this September, so start planning your entries now in the vegetables, fruit, flowers, baking and craft categories. We also have lots of categories for children too including baking, arts and crafts. It’s a great fun day out for all the family whether taking part or simply visiting and raises valued funds for deserving charities including Rainbows and LOROS. If you are planning to enter your exhibits into any of the classes available please do so on the morning of the show between 8.30 and 11.00am.

Funding Boost For Coalville Air Squadron Through £20,000-For-Seven Scheme Cadets and staff from the 1188 Coalville Air Squadron are celebrating after receiving a £10,000 grant towards new training equipment. The squadron received the money through North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) £20,000-for-Seven scheme, which provides funding to worthy community projects.

The 1188 Coalville Air Squadron is the latest to benefit from the scheme, and has used its grant to bring their training equipment up to date, to the benefit of all involved. In total £240,000 has been handed out through round one of the council’s £20,000-for-seven scheme, which saw the public vote for the North West Leicestershire projects they felt were most deserving of help.

Other projects that have benefited include Castle Donington Bowls Club which built a new pavilion, the Kegworth Village Hall Management Committee which funded a new community Hub and Castle Donington Parish Council which funded a new MUGA (multi use games area).

Councillor John Cotterill, Chairman of NWLDC at the time of the grant presentation, said: “Providing the young people of today with adequate support, training, resources and up to date technology to help them succeed and achieve in later life is so important. I am pleased that the squadron have recognised that by supporting and encouraging their cadets this will give them a firm foundation and many opportunities in the future. I have been shown the excellent equipment the squadron has purchased with funding received and I can safely say that the district council is very pleased to have supported this through the £20,000 for Seven grant programme.”

Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Rebekah Harrison-Page RAF VR(T), said: "The squadron is really grateful for all the funding, it is allowing the squadron to move with the times. We owe it to our cadets to provide them with high quality training that will help them in adult life, whatever career they choose.”

The £20,000-for-seven funding comes largely from North West Leicestershire District Council, along with further support from East Midlands Airport, the Florence Turner Trust, Major Bream, Moto in the Community, the Sir Andrew Martin Charitable Trust, the Helen Jean Cope Charity, the J Reginald Corah Foundation Fund, the P & C Hickinbotham Charitable Trust, and the Loughborough Police Station Tuck Shop Charity Fund.

The centre was originally founded and endowed in 1903 by the Victorian philanthropist and social reformer, Charles Booth and his family, who lived at nearby Grace Dieu Manor. The family then eventually entrusted the centre to Leicestershire County Council in 1953.

Mike Statham, present chairman of the management committee said “The county council has been a good custodian of the centre for many decades, and they have carried out many improvements and modernisations, but now, because of the severe cut backs in local authority budgets, the council felt they could no longer support or financially fund the centre.”

As a result, the centre has formed a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, recently approved by the Charity Commission, and a new board of trustees has been appointed to take over the management of the centre going forward. A business plan has been drawn up and there are new plans and ideas in the pipeline for the future development of the centre.

Mike added “As well as putting on a variety of events, like our music festival on 5 August, we currently cater for over 30 groups from pre-school toddlers to a fellowship for retired folk, and do face a challenging but exciting future.

We are determined to try to keep this much loved centre and valued community asset going for another 100 years, if we can.”

Whitwick & District Whitwick and District U3A will hold its monthly General Meeting on Friday 21st July. The U3A offers companionship through learning and social activities to retired people. Members are involved in a wide range of Interest Groups, all based on the self-help ethos.

Group Leaders and others will be on hand at the General Meeting to answer questions and pass on information. Members and visitors are assured of a warm welcome.

The speaker at the July Meeting will be Tim Coltman and his subject is William Coltman VC. Tim will be telling us about his great-grandfather, William Howard Coltman, the most highly decorated non-commissioned officer of WWI. A native of Burton upon Trent, Bill Coltman was a committed Christian and refused to fight. The story of how he won the Victoria Cross; the Distinguished Conduct Medal (twice) and the Military Medal (also twice) promises to be a fascinating one.

The horrors of the Great War, recalled in centenary events, have slipped from our headlines recently but July 1917 saw the lead up to The Third Battle of Ypres, a period of terrible human loss and the worst of trench warfare.

Last Months Article 'Miners Gala Committee' Photo Brings Back Memories For Ann Brown "I felt I just had to write to you as I have been passed a copy of your June issue of Coalville Community Eye." "I was told to look through it and see if there was anything I recognised.

Low and behold there I was looking out on page 6. This picture was taken in 1966 (when I was 21 years old) as I was the Coal Queen at the time. My name then was Ann Hancock and I lived in Swannington, working at the NCB's Headquarters at Coleorton Hall."

"I am now 72 and living in Derby - this really was a surprise. I really am glad that the Gala is making a comeback. My father, Arthur Hancock, was Secretary of the Miners Gala Committee and I am sure he would be thrilled to know it was making a comeback."

Latest News From It’s the middle of a particularly hot and dry British summer and, as I write this, it is around 30 degrees outside. It’s definitely not a day to leave any animal in a car but surprisingly some people just don’t think of the awful consequences.

We have probably all, at some point or another, been aware of the campaigns and horror stories reported in the media, yet still people need reminding that dogs die in hot cars. So as the temperatures soar, here are a few things to bear in mind to ensure that your dog does not become a casualty of the heat.

Don’t leave your dog alone in a car.

If it’s very warm outside and you’re going out in the car, think very carefully about what you are going to do with your dog when you get to your destination. It can get unbearably hot in a car on a sunny day, even when it’s not that warm.

In fact, when it’s 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can soar to 47°C/117°F within a short space of time.

Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool. In a hot stuffy car, dogs can’t cool down so leaving a window open or a sunshield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. Leaving a bowl of water for them in a car is also ineffectual and water heats up quickly and often gets knocked over when a distressed dog is trying to get out of the situation. Under the Animal Welfare Act everyone has a legal duty to care for their animals and if they put an animal at risk, they could face prosecution. So, if you ever see a dog in a car on a warm day please call the Police on 999.

The biggest danger to a dog in this situation is heatstroke, which can be fatal. Some dogs are more prone to heatstroke. For example, dogs with short snouts, fatter or heavily muscled dogs and long-haired breeds, as well as very old or very young dogs are susceptible. A dog which is unable to reduce their body temperature, could develop heatstroke and here are some signs to look for: • Heavy panting • Profuse salivation • A rapid pulse • Very red gums/tongue • Lethargy • Lack of coordination • Reluctance or inability to rise after collapsing • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • A loss of consciousness in extreme circumstances.

If your dog shows any symptoms of heatstroke, move them immediately to a shaded, cool area and seek advice from your vet. Heatstroke should always be treated as an emergency.

Dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature gradually lowered.

Immediately douse your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. – You could put your dog in a shower and run cool water over

them or use a spray filled with cool water and then place your dog in the breeze of a fan.

Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water. Continue to douse them with cool water until their breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that they begin to shiver. Once you have cooled your dog down you should take them straight to the veterinary surgery for a check up.

We need to be aware however that dogs suffer heat in many other situations and we should, as pet owners, ensure that this risk is minimised. Here then are some tips for warm weather safety.

• Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if they are feeling hot.

• If you want to take your dog with you on a car journey, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly.

• If you have to leave your dog outside, you should provide a cool shady spot where they can escape from the sun at all times of the day.

• Make sure your dog always has a good supply of drinking water, in a weighted bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.

• Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day.

• Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair. Give long-coated breeds a haircut at the start of the summer and later in the season, if necessary. This also applies to those breeds that do not shed their coats – owners need to ensure the weight and thickness of coat do not add to the risk of heatstroke through correct clipping.

• Dogs need exercise - even when it is hot. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening.

Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather and avoid pavement walks as this can cause burns to the pads.

• Dogs can get sunburned too – particularly those with light-coloured noses or light-coloured fur on their ears. Ask your vet for advice on petsafe sunscreen.

We all like to enjoy the sunny weather and our dogs are no different. With a bit of planning and remembering the points above, we can ensure that the risks to the health and the lives of our dogs in the hot weather is reduced.

Of course, much of the above advice applies to other pets as well – So please do what you can to ensure the safety of all pets during this hot spell.

Bronze Award In Recognition Of Council’s Armed Forces Pledge North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has been recognised for its commitment to supporting the Armed Forces.

The council has received the bronze award from the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme, which acknowledges organisations that excel in their support for the Armed Forces.

The North West Leicestershire Armed Forces Community Covenant was signed by the council in May 2014, declaring how the district will support members of the armed forces.

The council’s dedicated Armed Forces Champion is Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services. She said: “We’re thrilled to have earned the bronze award and are proud of our continued support for the Armed Services. It is our way of saying thank you to those that have served our country, and we feel the covenant has been very well received across the district since 2014. We continue to find new ways to support our Armed Forces personnel and it is great to have received recognition of this through our bronze award.”

One of the best examples of the success of the covenant is the four homeless ex-servicemen housed in Coalville earlier this year thanks to a link-up between the council and veteran support charity Once, We Were Soldiers.

The project sees the council assist in finding suitable accommodation for homeless veterans that are being supported by the charity.

Andy Spiers, founder of Once, We Were Soldiers, said: “We

are delighted that our very close partnership with NWLDC and the hard work our volunteers have helped contribute to the council achieving this award.”

In signing the Armed Forces Community Covenant, the council agreed to:

• Nominate an Armed Forces

Champion to make sure military involvement is embedded at the highest levels within the council • Nominate an Armed Forces Support Officer to support the Armed Forces Champion and manage Armed Forces Community Covenant projects, events and initiatives • Use its website to provide information on the Armed Forces community and the covenant itself • Fly a flag for Armed Forces Day to raise awareness of the role our Armed Forces and their families continue to play • Mark Remembrance Day by supporting a public act of remembrance and the parade through the town • Recognise Armistice Day with a two minute silence at the Council Offices • Provide housing support to members of the armed forces to make sure they are not disadvantaged by the requirement to have a local connection to qualify for inclusion on our Housing Register and therefore access to social housing • Provide access to council leisure services and offer serving members and veterans a 25 per cent membership discount at leisure centres • Provide information on health services to support any injured military personnel who settle in North West Leicestershire • Continue to recognise the importance of local war memorials • Promote the Community Covenant Grant Fund Support and support applications to it.

May I begin by thanking all of you who supported me in the recent General Election. I feel extremely honoured and privileged to represent you in Parliament, and the fact that over 31,000 of you put your faith in me by giving me the largest majority any MP has ever received in North West Leicestershire is a source of huge pride. Whilst I was delighted with this result locally, I cannot pretend that the result at a national level was what the Prime Minister was looking for and there is much to reflect upon about the campaign, however we are where we are and the Conservative Party is determined to provide the stable Government we need as we enter into Brexit negotiations with the EU. The election result has initiated much discussion about what this means for Brexit with a number of the usual suspects turning up to comment about the sort of Brexit we should go for. The fact is however that there is no such thing as a hard or a soft Brexit. It’s either a clean Brexit or no Brexit.

Both the Conservative and Labour Manifesto stated we would be leaving the single market and customs union as part of the Brexit process. This was voted for by 84% of the electorate so it’s quite clear that we voted to control our borders and we must leave the single market.

To get the full benefits of Brexit, we have to leave the protectionist customs union and European Court of Justice so we can arrange our own trade deals with the other 150 Countries in the world who are not in the European Union. To do anything other than this, would be akin to moving from being a passenger in a taxi to being tied up in the boot with no say over the direction of travel, and still being asked to pay the fare!

Brexit will dominate this Parliament and it is essential that we get it right for the future of our Country. There is also much to do locally. Our local economy is continuing to perform well and we have achieved record levels of employment. We do need our infrastructure improvements to keep pace and to press on with the regeneration of Coalville. I am continuing to work on bringing major investment into the town and I am confident that we should see some positive progress on this in the near future.

As I stated earlier, there is much to

reflect on following the election campaign. The party has an economic record which we can be very proud of. Unemployment has fallen by over 70% in North West Leicestershire since 2010 and the record deficit which was bequeathed to us by the last Labour Government has been cut substantially. The proposals within the Labour Manifesto would have undone all of this work with hugely unaffordable schemes. It would have seen companies fleeing the UK, a significant loss of tax receipts and higher interest rates to fund the inevitable increase in borrowing.

I find it galling that the amount of interest we are currently paying on the UK’s Government debt mountain is about the same as the Government’s budget deficit.

Much of this debt is as a direct result of Labour overspending and profligacy and this election proved beyond doubt that they have not learnt the principle lesson of socialism, which is that you always run out of someone else’s money.

Finally I just wanted to touch on one very disappointing aspect of the election campaign in North West Leicestershire. The day before polling day, a smear leaflet was produced urging residents not to vote for me citing the sale of my house to HS2 and lack of support for Snibston Discovery Park. On the 2 issues, I have openly stated that the Court ordered the sale of my property to HS2 as part of my divorce and the sale amount was a significant loss on the amount I paid for my house several years earlier. Secondly on the matter of Snibston, I did all I could to save the Discovery Museum, even bringing up the then Secretary of State as part of my efforts. I regret we were not successful but any accusation that this was a ‘charade’ as stated is completely unfair and one I wholeheartedly refute.

I believe there are issues with the legality of this leaflet under section 10 of Representation of the People Act 1983 and I have reported the matter to the Police.

I find campaigns such as this and the repeated defacing of election posters extremely saddening. I am happy to debate my and my party’s record, but anonymous defamatory smears do nothing for democracy or the political process.
