Your Chance To Get Involved With The Biggest Youth Team Football Event In North West Leicestershire The Raven7 Football Tournament 1st & 2nd July 2017 On Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd July we are holding a youth football event at Coalville Town Football Club, Owen Street, Coalville. This event has doubled in size from 2014 and will see 1200 young players from across Leicestershire and beyond compete in excess of 250 mini soccer matches, with ages from under 7’s up to and including Under 13’s, all in one weekend with hundreds more Managers/ Coaches / family members/friends all watching the event.

The sponsorship packages on offer are as follows: £50 for a ¼ page event programme advert, every car will have a fee to pay for parking and will receive the programme as part of the payment. We have a print run of 800 programmes and will also place a copy of the programme on our website

to enable you to download this will increase the amount of people who will see your advert supporting ‘youth football’. £150 to sponsor an individual age group competition i.e. U7, U8, U9 U10 Boys, U10 U11 or U12 Girls plus Ladies, the event programme and a mention in all references to the age group which is sponsored. We will also manufacture and display a banner of your company (we will need your artwork/logo) promoting your sponsorship of the event for the whole weekend.

You are welcome to join us for the presentation of the trophies and medals.

The Raven 7s Tournament main sponsor package is £650 this includes your company name mentioned in all references to the tournament. A sponsors welcome banner (2ft x 12ft long) at the single entrance to the tournament which we will get manufactured and displayed on your behalf (we will need your artwork/logo).

Coalville Library Launches Its New Construction Club!

Calling all children who love LEGO! Coalville Library is launching it’s brand new Construction Club on Saturday 4th February, 10.30am-12.00pm.

For only £1 per child you’ll get the chance to embrace your creative side and let your imagination run wild playing with LEGO and listening to stories for inspiration.

The club will be suitable for children aged 6-12 years. Families are welcome but children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult throughout. Make sure you put the date in your diary – this is an event not to be missed!

Whitwick And District U3A The next monthly General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be on Friday 17th February. This will be another opportunity to discover what the U3A has to offer to people who are retired or approaching retirement. Our members are involved in a wide range of Interest Groups based on selfhelp principles, with something to attract most tastes. At the General Meeting, Group Leaders and others will be on hand to answer questions and pass on information about our U3A. With a membership of 275 local people, it is a flourishing organisation.

We are delighted to announce that the guest speaker will be Professor Martin Barstow, ProVice-Chancellor of Leicester University. His talk is entitled: "What has Space done for us?"

Professor Barstow is eminently qualified to speak to us about the economic and social benefits of space. One of his current roles is Director of the Leicester Institute of Space and Earth Observation.

He witnessed Tim Peake being launched into space and was a friend of the late Sir Patrick Moore, presenter of “The Sky at Night”.

His talk should be fascinating.

Join The Reading Resolution At Coalville Library

Grace Dieu Day Of Magic And Wizardry!

Grace Dieu was transformed into a School of Magic and Wizardry in aid of the children’s charity LUMOS, the JK Rowling charity which works hard to ensure that no child is denied a family life because of poverty, disability or ethnic minority. Lumos supports 8 Million children and works hard to put an end to the institutionalisation of children.

The entire staff and children rose to the occasion with great enthusiasm and fully immersed themselves in the wizarding theme during the very special ‘Taster Day’…

The day started off with the Assembly in the ‘Great Hall’ with children sorted by the ‘Sorting Hat’ into the School houses of de Lisle, Bishops, Gentili and Verdun before embarking on a day of exciting lessons such as Potions,

Riddles and Runes, Quidditch and Magic Art and Drawing.

Many ‘mini dramas’ were staged throughout the day and there was a fierce battle for House points!

The day was devoted to cross curricular learning, themed with magic and wizardry…. In addition to the set lessons children also had a chance to learn about ‘magical creatures’ as they tended to our alpaca herd, play ‘Magic Chess’ on the Chapel playground, encounter the talking portrait and run the gauntlet with the ‘Moaning Myrtles’ in the famous Black and White Corridor!

‘Professor Perch’ (Tony Smith) visited the School with his Harris Hawks fittingly called Luna and Bellatrix and performed a flying display. The majestic birds prompted many questions from the children who found them fascinating. The Chef provided a great lunchtime feast for pupils and staff as well as Witch’s trolleys full of yummy sweets! A very memorable day for staff and pupils at Grace Dieu Manor School.

Army Visitors Fight Corner For STEM Subjects Army personnel visited Ibstock Community College to talk to students about the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

The officers worked with students from all year groups on small STEM projects, such as designing nutrition bars and jackets to keep cool.

They also talked to students about the ways in which STEM subjects are used in the army, in areas such as medicine, engineering and logistics.

Both officers explained their roles in the army and answered questions about the range of career options on offer in the armed forces.

Science teacher Caroline Sharkey said: "All of the students - both girls and boys, from Year 7 through to Year 9 - were completely engaged in the sessions. More than 60 per cent of jobs are predicted to require STEM subjects in 10 years' time so it is vital that students recognise the relevance of these subjects and how they can be used in the future."

Wyatt Condemns Free Parking From 3PM As Nothing But Stupidity Cllr Michael Wyatt has today attacked the new free parking initiative as the most stupid idea yet.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "The idea of free parking from 3pm is a complete and utter waste of time and does nothing to help small independent traders in Coalville.

The Tory controlled Council and Labour who first suggested this barmy idea need to stop their continued tit for tat school ground antics, which is having a massive detrimental affect on jobs and stability in our Town.

What we need is a proper free parking policy which allows traders and shoppers to help make our town thrive again. The current policy is clearly preventing our Town from moving forward. Also the Council need to engage with local businesses and stop listening or consulting various groups like the so called Coalville Town Team who does not represent the vast majority of traders in our Town, in fact I, along with many local businesses haven't a clue who the Coalville Town Team represents.

Certainly not the vast majority of

traders who are constantly being ignored by the Council.

What we need is free parking on a Market Day or free parking on a Saturday which is a proven winner for everyone. Its a no brainer but unfortunately the current council leadership is more obsessed with Ashby than helping to revitalise Coalville.

Cllr Smith says it will help local traders in Coalville but how can it? when the vast majority of traders close at 4pm? Also Cllr Clarke says its brilliant, How is it brilliant? when Labour are responsible for the parking fiasco in the first place, and clearly don't understand or support local traders. Both Labour and the Tories need to grow up or resign and let people who understand what Coalville and local businesses need deliver a genuine plan for our Town."

Wyatt Chosen To Stand Against Bridgen Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt has been chosen to stand if there is a snap Election on behalf of the Liberal Democrats. Cllr Wyatt is a very well known and respected local councillor, and recently campaigned to leave the EU. Cllr Michael Wyatt said, "I have decided to stand against the current Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen because I'm sick and tired of North West Leicestershire getting a raw deal. We seem to have an MP who is all talk and no action. Coalville and the surrounding area needs someone who's passionate about our Town and understands the needs of the local community. Hospital Thanks Coalville Charity For £28,000 Scanner Last week the new Volusion Scanner was formally launched at Leicester Royal Infirmary where Doctors and Nurses were ecstatic over the performance of this best in class equipment and full of praise for Coalville based charity Brown Dog who provided the funding for the scanner.

Local man Mark Storer (and founder of Brown Dog - shown centre picture) told the Times how this new scanner provides amazing detailed pictures and 3D images which enables a more accurate and quicker diagnosis to be achieved, which means if it is ovarian, womb or cervical cancer treatment can be accelerated to address the cancer and save lives.

At the launch, the hospital staff explained how the scanner was already making a significant difference, not only from a diagnostic perspective, but particularly from a patient care perspective where women going through a very worrying time can be re-assured much quicker. There are also cost saving advantages due to the high quality 3D images that are providing accurate results without sending women to have an MRI scan which can often be very stressful for many women. All the Doctors and staff at the Royal wanted to thank Brown Dog and all it's supporters for this amazing gift.

In addition to the £28,000 scanner, £7,000 was provided by Brown Dog to purchase new, thinner and better Hysteroscopes which are used in the out-patient unit to identify cancer. They are particularly useful in diagnosing womb cancer which is very much on the increase in Leicestershire and across the UK (this can be seen in the picture, held above the scanner) Grace Wardle (Communications Manager for Brown Dog - shown front left) explained that most of the money had been raised from the 2016 Brown Dog challenge last June, where 45 people walked 44 miles along the Exmoor coast in 24 hours (including walking through the night). She went on to say that because the Brown Dog charity has no overheads, every single pound donated is used to purchase vital equipment like this. Grace, also from Coalville, said that everyone involved with the charity is so grateful to all the people who supported us and thanked everyone involved.

Martha Storer (next to Grace) added that other events like the Annual Brown Dog Netball Competition, support from the Asian Lawyers Society and fundraising provided by local company DHL at East Midlands Airport all contributed to the £40,000 that was raised in 2016. Martha praised everyone connected with these events for their support, particularly the Netball which she organised with her partner Sam Carline (back left).

In 2017 Brown Dog have another through the night walking event on 9th/10th June called the Stargaze Challenge, which takes place in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, where people have the option to walk the whole 52 miles or just do half of it. Making Ends Meet At County Hall Charles Dickens’ optimistic character, Mr Wilkins Micawber has a famous recipe for financial happiness. He shares it with the penniless David Copperfield: "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness.

Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery."

The County Council’s finances are being discussed by Councillors ready for the Budget meeting at 2pm on the 22nd February. The papers will be published on the County Council website a week beforehand. They will not make easy reading. How can politicians keep electors happy when the Council’s income is going down and the demand for services is going up?

The Adults and Communities Department is in the curious position of both cutting services and spending more on services relative to other departments. How come?

People aged over 65 account for the majority of the Department’s care expenditure. The wartime generation spent their youth physically active and fed on healthy rations. Those who avoided smoking and made good lifestyle choices later on are now in their 80s and 90s. This longlived generation are becoming frail. Post-war baby-boomers who have smoked, been less physically active and consumed excessive amounts of unhealthy food are suffering disease in their 60s.

Thanks to the public health experiment of post-war austerity, combined with the excellent care provided by the NHS, we are witnessing two generations living longer with diseases of old age at the same time.

The Adult Social Care (ASC) Department will need an extra £560,000 in 2017/18 to meet the needs of the increasing numbers of frail older people with

substantial and critical needs.

It will need to spend an extra £4,110,000 a year by 2020/21 Something Will Turn Up The ASC had hoped to save £1M through an innovative ‘Help to Live at Home’ service. Instead of spotpurchasing packages of care from lots of little providers it was going give each geographical area to one provider. Sadly this did not work out as hoped. Unable to make ends meet, one of the bigger providers pulled out, just before the service was due to start. Finding new providers to cover the three areas affected is likely to cost the Council £200k of its hoped for savings.

The Council also hopes to save another £1M by reducing the “cost and demand for social care”. Roughly translated, “strengthening controls for the review of care packages and income contributions” means it will harder for frail older people to get care and when they do they can expect to pay more for it.

The Council Budget papers are full of plans to trim services and attempt to make them more efficient. Some of the cuts will be false economies, pushing costs and responsibilities onto an NHS already struggling to cope.

Pay To Park Outside Your House One plan that will cause dismay in Coalville Town Centre could raise more revenue through charging for on-street parking. Currently no on-street parking charges are applied in Leicestershire. Highways have suggested that “introducing such charges would allow a higher level of investment in our transport infrastructure to be maintained than would otherwise be possible, as any income generated from these charges would be ring fenced and reinvested in transport related services.”

With nowhere else to park and not enough spaces on our streets as it is, I can see this idea going down like a burst tyre in Coalville town centre.

Last week the Prime Minister set out the Government’s 12 negotiating objectives for Brexit.

I believe each of these objectives were reasonable and fair to both the UK and the EU. A sensible organisation looking at this situation objectively would allow free trade in goods between the EU and the UK with access to services where the regulatory framework allowed. If the EU refuse this sensible proposition then we should not be afraid to walk away and adopt World Trade Organisation rules. We have Countries queuing up to negotiate trade deals with us, primarily the new United States administration who I believe will take a dim view of any vengeful antics against the UK by the European Union.

It is an established fact that the trade between EU Countries.

Looking at this deal from business perspective, it would an act of kamikaze proportions to risk damaging this relationship for the sake of exacting punishment and revenge against a Country that democratically decided it does not wish to remain part of your organisation.

It also serves to highlight why we have taken the right decision in not being shackled to them any longer as their reaction to the referendum result has been tantamount to bullying.

Let us also not forget how much money the UK has pumped into the EU project. It amounts to over £60 billion in net contributions since 2010 alone, and many billions of pounds before that.

Money we had to borrow and on which we are paying interest.

Britain’s contribution to the EU budget amounts to more than the rest of the member countries combined if you exclude Germany. If you also consider the many billions of pounds more that we spend on defence than Germany, France or Italy, there is a realism that the UK has propped the EU up for many years and that should be appreciated during the negotiation.

If in its attempts to frighten other EU nations who might be thinking of leaving, the EU look

to punish the UK in any trade agreement talks, let us not forget who would really suffer. It is the people of Europe and their jobs and prosperity. The car worker in Germany, the tourist worker in Spain, the farmer in France.

The EU elite would do well to remember this.

As I write this, the Supreme Court have decreed that Article 50 will need Parliamentary approval to be triggered. This is a disappointing but not a surprising decision, and I do not believe it will hold up invoking article 50, as the Government will move swiftly to enact the legislation and keep to the timetable that has been set out.

There is much concern regarding the proposal to downgrade one of the A & E departments in Staffordshire at present and the potential threat to the unit at Burton which would cover a significant portion of the District.

I and my colleagues for whom Burton serves are very clear that this should not happen.

Burton has a very busy A and E department and we have growing populations.

We do need public support however and I would urge all of those who share my concerns to sign the petition against the downgrade which can be found at www.saveburtonaande.com On the wider issue of the NHS, there has been much in the media about the pressures within the organisation. There is obviously an ever growing demand, particularly for A and E services. A and E attendances are up nearly 25% since 2010, that’s 4.3 million more admissions and whilst we are putting billions of pounds more into the NHS, it is not just more money that will deal with this issue. We need to look at primary care and how to better direct the estimated 30% of people for whom A and E is not the appropriate treatment centre.

We also need to look at the issues delaying discharge such as the setting up of care packages so we can ease up the ‘bed blocking’ problem. The Government is doing what it can to improve the NHS to keep it sustainable for the years to come.
