WELCOME TO YOUR SEPTEMBER ISSUE This month sees us celebrating World Heart Day on the 29th September and it’s an important reminder of just how careful we need to be to look after our hearts, from eating healthily to making sure we get enough exercise.

I know I’m as guilty as anyone for not exercising enough, especially since my injury, but I have decided it’s time to find something I can do to get my heart pumping! I’ve discovered that riding a tandem is possible with slight pedal alterations and canoeing is also a great way of exercising for me, whilst also enjoying great river views! So I challenge you all to do a little more this month, whether it’s an extra half an hour gardening or an extra 10km run, let’s give our hearts a little challenge this month!

To help you along I’ve included some tips on staying healthy and also a lovely healthy recipe! You can also find out how your heart works and what happens when something goes wrong. We are also very lucky

SCARF - SENIOR CITIZENS ACTIVE RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP Recently retired people may not have heard about SCARF. If they have time on their hands it may be worth their while turning up at a Scarf meeting.

SCARF is an interesting group of people based in the Coalville area who enjoy appropriate activities for retired people. Membership is available for those who wish to take part in meetings/talks/outings and social functions.

Scarf meets once a month at the Marlene Reid Centre, Coalville 2.00pm - 4.00pm for interesting talks on the second Friday of each month. Members may also take part in outings to a variety of places with attractive lunch stops included.

Why not join this happy band of retirees and make your time even more enjoyable? Membership costs £3.00 per year, £1.50 per session with free tea & coffee! A raffle is also included. The cost of the outings is very reasonable.

The organising committee are also happy to welcome new members to help with the running of SCARF as well as receiving new active retired members.

THE HEART OF ENGLAND CHORUS The Heart of England Chorus is an A Capella Barbershop male chorus.

We are members of the British Association of Barbershop Singers.

Based in Birstall Leicester, we are comprised of around 26 ordinary men from all walks of life like carpenters,double glazing installers to pensioners, and come from throughout the county and beyond, who are united in our love of music and singing.

What we love doing most of all is performing, and you'll find us out and about in the community at events throughout the year, and entertain audiences with our unique mix of intricate harmonies and offbeat humour, as well as at the annual national competition each year.

Of course performance doesn't come without practice and our rehearsal nights are every Monday and we support our members with coaching and continually strive to improve our standard.

Coalville Library is looking for more volunteers to help run a Shared Reading Group. This is a bit different from the usual reading groups as books are read aloud to the group. Shared Reading is a great way of bringing people together in weekly groups to listen to poems and stories read aloud. Thoughts and experiences are shared; personal and social connections are made. The group leader seeks to create an atmosphere of lively collaboration, which is best felt in the literature itself. There are already many successful groups running, including several in other parts of Leicestershire, but we need help to support the already established Shared Reading Group in Coalville.

If you’re friendly, confident reading aloud and in leading a group and interested in literature it could be you. Full training and support will be given. WORLD HEART DAY

C

oronary Heart Disease and strokes are the world’s leading cause of death and are known as Cardiovascular Disease. Cardiovascular Disease can be caused by blood clots or fatty deposits which can build up in blood vessels causing them to harden and narrow (atherosclerosis) and prevent the flow of oxygen filled blood to reach vital organs such as the heart or brain.

Here in the UK in 2011 Cardiovascular Disease claimed the lives of nearly 160,000 people.

From this number 74,000 deaths were due to Coronary Heart Disease with Heart Attack being the leading killer. 1 in 6 men and 1 in 10 woman in the UK will suffer from Coronary Heart Disease with the most common symptom being Angina (2 million people affected), Angina is when the blood supply to the heart muscle is restricted again due to atherosclerosis.

Each year 110,000 people in the UK have a stroke. 85% of this number is due to atherosclerosis which causes a blood clot that then prevents the oxygen filled blood reaching the brain.

World Heart Day takes place on 29 September every year and is a chance for people across the globe to take part in the world's biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease.

It aims to bring awareness of the seriousness of Cardiovascular Disease and how we can prevent the onset by simple lifestyle changes. This year’s World Heart Day Theme is creating a Heart Healthy Environment and ensuring a healthy heart wherever people live, work and play.

Healthy Lifestyle. Make simple steps to improve your general health and wellbeing. Not only can changes be made to your diet and exercise but also find ways in which to avoid extra stress and strain in your life to ease pressure from the body, mind and heart. Stress surrounds us all on a daily basis, finding ways in which to relieve this can make a huge difference to your health. Make time for rest and relaxation. Life is certainly for living and should be done so in a

happy and healthy environment. www.mind.org.uk/informationsupport/tips-for-everyday-living/ stress Eat a well-balanced diet which includes up to 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables each day and NO this is not equivalent to 5 grapes or 5 chips.

Start thinking about your daily meals and their fat content. Some foods that are high in fat includepastries, cream, mayonnaise/ oil based dressings, fried foods such as chips, cakes, puddings including ice cream, hard cheese, palm oil/ coconut oil based food.

Be kind to your body and have these foods as a treat and not as part of a daily diet.

Do not be fooled by Food Labeling. ‘Low in fat’ does not always mean a healthier option.

For example a small 150gr fat free flavored yoghurt can contain up to 20.9g of sugar which is equivalent to 4 milk chocolate digestives. A popular children’s Fruit shoot drink advertised as ‘no added sugar’ contains up to 24gr of sugar but NO actual fruit.

Children’s obesity levels are on the increase with a third of 10-11 year olds and over a fifth of 4-5 year olds overweight or obese, these figures provide an insight into the future of cardiovascular disease here within the UK along with many other health problems related to obesity.

Fruit juice VS real fruit. A recent research found that 48% of 2000 people underestimated the amount of sugar content in fruit juice. Even some of the ‘Sugar Free’ juices contain concentrates of other juices such as grape or apple which then makes a glass of this so called ‘Sugar Free’ juice to contain 36g of the stuff!

Remember to READ all the labels Avoid smoking. Smoking causes 80,000 deaths each year in the UK, this is 1 in every 2 smokers.

One cigarette can often contain over 4000 chemicals, some of which are: Ammonia (common household cleaner) Arsenic (used in rat poison), Carbon Monoxide (poisonous exhaust fumes)

Tar (used for paving roads).

A full bottle of wine is 9 units! Now for the Sugar content in alcohol. A medium glass of wine on average contain up to 160 calories, that’s around 685 calories per bottle which is more than 3 Jam filled doughnuts. A pint of beer is on average 215 calories the same as a caramel filled chocolate bar.

Alcohol can increase the chance of Cardio-vascular disease as well as other health problems such as liver disease and increase chance of vascular dementia. These serious health problems develop after a number of years so please consider the recommended daily units as a guide. On average people generally walk 3000 to 4000 steps a day so reaching the 10,000 mark is not such a challenge and can be monitored with aid of a Pedometer (small portable device which counts your steps and records the details)

Bardon Hill Juniors was formed in the summer of 2010 by a small group of parents that frequented the club and had affiliations to Bardon Hill. One Saturday morning in July 2010, saw 5 young lads turn up for their first training session with no goals, no apparatus, just a few footballs and a huge amount of enthusiasm...

5 years on and with lots of hard work, commitment and this continuing enthusiasm, Bardon Hill Juniors has grown and grown.

• We now have over 140 children aged from 4 to 14 years affiliated to the club.

• We now have 11 junior teams committed to the football leagues in Leicestershire.

• We now have become an FA Charter Standard accredited club.

• We now have 12 ‘Level 1’ accredited coaches and a ‘level 2’ accredited coach.

• We now have both girls and boys teams.

This success story has been hugely attributed to the hard work and commitment to everyone involved at the club. t’s now over a 100 days since the election of the first majority Conservative Government in over 20 years, and the party is determined to govern for everybody with modern, One Nation, compassionate Conservative values. In those first 100 days we have committed an extra £10 billion a year extra for the NHS, introduced a national living wage, increased personal tax allowances, clamped down on coasting schools, protected the defence budget and lowered the cap on benefits.

Encouragingly, since the election unemployment has continued to fall in North West Leicestershire and we continue to have one of the fastest growing economies in the Country, something everyone in our District can be very proud of. In addition legislation has been enacted to hold an EU Referendum by the end of 2017 and the Government will act on a number of other commitments such as cutting the number of MP’s at the next election in 2020, which will cut the cost of Politics by reducing the number of MP’s by 50 and creating constituencies of more equal numbers of electors.

Parliament will be returning shortly for its September sitting before conference season and I am keen to pack in as much as I can during this period with a number of issues that have been working on or which were brought to my attention over the summer.

On September 11th, a Private Member’s Bill will be brought before Parliament to allow assisted dying. This issue has made up a significant portion of my postbag in recent weeks and I will be attending and speaking in this debate. I have been strongly lobbied by both sides on this emotive debate and it is a matter I have considered in great depth.

Coping with terminal illness is distressing and difficult both for the patient and their families.

These cases are truly moving and evoke the highest degree of compassion and emotion.

My view is that if we, as a society, made assisted suicide legal, we would be legitimising the fears and anxieties of so many sick and vulnerable people who worry that they are burden on those around them and on society more widely.

As a compassionate society, our response to suicidal feelings must never be a lethal injection.

I am very concerned that for the vulnerable the “right to die” would

become “the obligation to die” if we change the current laws.

For every person that we might consider to have a clear and settled wish to end their lives, there are countless others who are vulnerable, despairing and often lacking in support who may feel under pressure – internal or external – to go through with this decision.

Years of debate on this issue in the House of Lords has shown, there is no safeguard that would be sufficient to stop a person who feels a burden on their family, friend or caregivers from ending their life; nor can doctors accurately assess this, or worse, pressure or abuse which does regrettably exist in certain cases.

As evidence from other countries has shown, a right to die would for many be a duty to die, and I will therefore resist this law for that reason. I have spoken to many healthcare professionals about this issue and it is clear that the focus should be on communication of palliative care. A hospice doctor who resides in the constituency and who for many years has worked closely with dying people and their families told me that she had to ask many about assisted suicide, all of whom have changed their mind after receiving proper palliative care. They may well have died and not had the chance to change their mind had assisted suicide been legal.

We clearly need to promote and improve palliative care, so that people are more confident that when the time comes they can have a “good death”.

Any change in the law would also put our health professionals in a very difficult position as they have all taken an oath to “do not harm”, and I believe very many of them would be unwilling to assist their patients to commit suicide.

This gives the background to my decision and whilst I know there will be those who don’t agree with me, I hope that I have assured you that I have spent much time researching the matter and coming to my conclusion. I appreciate that the current law is imperfect, but unfortunately all laws are imperfect. The bottom line is that I believe that the vast majority of people in North West Leicestershire would rather live in a country where some people who wanted to die were not allowed to than a country where some people felt pressured to take their own life.

WYATT CALLS FOR HEADS TO ROLL OVER MISSPELLING OF TOWNS NAME NOT ONCE BUT TWICE Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt has called on the Leicestershire County Council Tory bosses to sack the person who made such an insulting slur on the name of Coalville.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said “it’s crazy that no one is making proper checks on the signage in our Town.

Whoever made this stupid and insulting error should be sacked.

Not once but twice this has been allowed to happen. The cost of this

is once again down to the taxpayer and yet again wasted due to incompetence by those failing to make proper checks.”

DEMOLISHING GREENACRES A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY SAYS WYATT Cllr Michael Wyatt has written to all the local residents around Linford and Verdon Crescent urging them to object to the proposal by the District Council to pull down Greenacres a large empty building on Linford Crescent in Coalville, to build 1 and 2 bedroom houses.

Cllr Wyatt said "it's ridiculous that a building like this should be pulled down when its condition is still perfectly OK. I really do think the District Councils housing

department is a complete and utter joke to even contemplate this idea.

The building should be renovated and made into 1 and 2 bedroom flats for the disabled or elderly."

DID YOU KNOW THAT FROM 14TH – 20TH SEPTEMBER IS LIP READING AWARENESS WEEK? Some people may think that lipreading is a strange and unnecessary skill to learn. Most people use some lipreading without thinking about it as we go about our day to day lives. But, as we get older and especially for many people who have hearing loss, it becomes more difficult to have a comfortable conversation.

Being able to lipread can make a big difference.

A FREE course “Help to Hear Better” is being offered at the Marlene Reid Centre, Coalville, in October. It will run for six Wednesday mornings, starting on October 14th from 10.30 – 12.30.

It’s open to all those who have a hearing loss and who are aged 65 or over. It will also look at ways of coping with some of the more common challenges for people with deafness. This informal course is supported by a local charity, the Leslie Edwards Trust,

in conjunction with Leicestershire County Council.

Lipreading Tutor, Jane Futcher, said that a previous group member who joined the Help To Hear Better sessions commented that ”it brings you together with people who understand how tough it can be to be hard of hearing”. Another said “not only have I learnt a lot but it has also given me more confidence”.

If you want to manage your hearing loss better, why not come along to the Help to Hear Better course in October? It could make a big difference.

DON’T WAIT TO MAKE A FUSS The first chapters of Douglas Adam’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy poke fun at local government planning. As Earth faces utter destruction by a Vogon Constructor Fleet, Arthur Dent is lying in front of some terrestrial bulldozers in his dressing gown. He has only just discovered the Local Council plans to demolish his home to build a by-pass. Mr Prosser from the planning department is sent to reason with him, pointing out that ‘the plans have been available in the local planning office for the last nine months.’

Under the current national planning policy, District Councils are obliged to create a ‘Local Plan’ which sets out how they are going to meet the needs of their community for housing, jobs, transport and essential services.

The population is growing, people are living longer and more people are choosing to live alone.

Where should we put all the new homes? Is it sensible to have all the employment in the north of the district and build houses in

the south? How are people going to get to work if the roads are already congested?

At the Seallam! Centre, while on holiday in the Hebrides, I learned about the Highland Clearances.

A handful of absentee landlords wanted the land for sheep and evicted their less profitable human tenants from their homes. It took direct action in the post-war period to restore a fairer way of managing the land.

On the last day, there were queues outside the door of Snibston Discovery Museum. “Where are all the exhibits going to go?” asked a member of the Museum’s Association speaking on the BBC. Sir Peter Soulsby, Mayor of Leicester was heard suggesting that the City could take back the Gimson beam engine that Coalville has been looking after for over two decades. What will happen to the fragile fabrics donated by NEXT and currently displayed in climate controlled conditions?

The Museum doors may be shut, but my job, as local representative for this community, is not over.

The County Council rejected the Friends of Snibston’s detailed business case in favour of a one page document, sketching out the fantasy of a ‘smaller mining museum’. The judicial review ruled this was ‘lawful’.

The cost of moving Leicester’s heritage beam engines could run into millions. The cost of restoring the most important clothes collection outside London could wipe out all the £350k so-called ‘savings’ promised by County Hall.

With the business case for closure not stacking up, it is worth asking who might benefit. The Museum sits in a brownfield site that the County Council has already told Planners it would like to develop. Who profits from building houses on derelict land? It is rarely the landowner.

Government cuts to local government budgets are impacting on social care and threatening the NHS. The County Council does have to make difficult decisions. That is no excuse.

Making the decision to close Snibston was not ‘difficult’ for County Tories. What do they care about Coalville?

While the Tory decision to close Snibston with no costed closure plan was not unlawful, it is likely to be financially incompetent.
