Residents of Ashby and Coalville are invited to help raise vital funds for Marie Curie’s at-home nursing service for people with a terminal illness by helping to look after collection tins across the area.

All money raised will help Marie Curie provide expert care, guidance and support to help people with a terminal illness, and their families, get the most from the time they have left.

Locally, Marie Curie Nurses work night and day, in people’s homes across Leicestershire providing hands-on care and vital emotional support. Marie Curie also supports people throughout their illness by giving practical information from our free helpline and is also the leader in research into better ways of caring for people with terminal illness.

Seven out of 10 carers say that people with a terminal illness do not get all the care and support they need. As the UK’s leading charity for people living with any terminal illness, and their families, Marie Curie doesn’t think that is good enough.

Sophie Wallace, the local Community Fundraiser for Leicestershire said "Given the choice, most people would want to die at home, surrounded by the people and things that they cherish. Marie Curie makes this possible, but we couldn’t do it without our hardworking volunteers. Looking after the collection tins we put out in shops is an easy and flexible way to help raise the vital funds we need to keep caring for people living with a terminal illness."

Call For More Uniformed Groups North West Leicestershire District Council is looking to hear from any uniformed groups interested in taking part in this year’s remembrance parade and service.

The groups are needed for the parade and service on Sunday 13 November as the procession makes its way through Coalville to Memorial Square.

Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and St John’s Ambulance, have already pledged their full support and a number of local bikers, including ex-servicemen, have agreed to bring up the rear of the parade but the council is always looking for more groups to get involved.

1188 Coalville Squadron - Air Cadets News JOIN US

1188 (Coalville) Squadron is currently recruiting cadets both male and female. So if you are aged 12 – 17 and would like to join the local air cadets please come down to the squadron on a Tuesday or Thursday evening It is at the headquarters on Forest Road in Coalville, it starts at 7.15pm until 9.30pm.

1188 (Coalville) Squadron Visit RAF Gibraltar This August a cadet and member of staff from 1188 (Coalville) Squadron Air Training Corps went on a week long camp to RAF Gibraltar.

Coalville Air Cadets Get Airborne

Cadet Flight Sergeant Ewan Setchell and Civilian Instructor Joe Clark visited RAF Gibraltar for a week-long camp, along with other Cadets from Central & East Region and South West Region.

Last Weekend Seven Air Cadets From 1188 (Coalville) Squadron, Air Training Corps Went Air Experience Flying They went flying at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire. The cadets flew in a Grob Tutor, a small twoseater aerobatic aircraft used for elementary flying training. The same type used by Prince William, when learning to fly. The cadets sit on the pilots left hand side.

For two of the cadets it was their first flight and worried pre-flight faces soon turned into a big smiles.

For the cadets who had flown before there was the opportunity to experience aerobatics and a chance to take control of the aircraft. It was a fantastic day for flying with blue skies.

Cadet Suffolk, one of the first time fliers said"It was really good.

Best experience yet, I can’t wait to go again."

Cadet Southall added ”it was amazing”.

The cadets were accompanied by Civilian Instructor Marie Eyres. She said "It makes it all worthwhile when you see the cadets smiling faces.”

Coalville Air Cadets Get Colourful Last weekend four air cadets from 1188 (Coalville) Squadron, Air Training Corps took part in the first ever Coalville Colour Run. Cadets and staff also helped give out medals to about 500 competitors. Coalville's first ever Colour Run was in aid of LWA (Living Without Abuse), raising money to support Leicestershire families. Incredibly £10 000 was raised.

The squadron entered a team which comprised of Sgt Johnson, Sgt Benjamin, Cpl Eyres and Cdt Bishop. Civilian Instructor (CI) Eyres, CI Williams, CI Curtis, Mrs Suffolk, Cdts Harrison, Horrobin, Parker, Sharlot and Suffolk all helped to make the day a success.

After the race the icing on the cake for everyone was to take part in the zumba dance paint party..Civilian Instructor Marie Eyres said,“What an amazing day it was seeing our local community come together to support this wonderful charity. We were honoured to be asked to attend this event to hand out medals and goody bags to all the participants.”

The Cadets participated in many activities during the week, including visits to working Military sections at RAF Gibraltar and many of Gibraltar’s tourist attractions like St. Michael’s Cave and visiting the apes at the top of the rock. There were also trips to a Zoo and Water Park across the border in Spain. As this was an Air Cadet Camp, the Cadets were also able to see some of the military areas of the island, including the WWII Tunnels and Police boats.

CI Clark said “It was an amazing week for both the staff and Cadets. There’s so much history in Gibraltar, especially in places like the WWII Tunnels. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see this and enjoying a week in the sun at the same time.”

Flight Lieutenant Rebekah Harrison-Page RAF VR (T) said " I have in the past been on camp to RAF Gibraltar, it is a good camp and an excellent opportunity for members of the Air Training Corps to see parts of the peninsula not available to tourists.”

Snibston Mine Site, What Next?

Whitwick and District U3A

As many readers will be aware the Snibston Discovery Museum was closed in 2015 and demolished this year and to some that was the end. But it is not the end.

Snibston Mine, Sheepy Magna Wheelwrights Workshop, the Coalville Signal Box, the Country Park and the Century Theatre have not been taken away and the Century Theatre and Country Park are still open. Likewise the Friends of Snibston are still an active group and continue their work towards ensuring the Snibston Mine site and all the other associated historic and natural history attractions are maintained and made accessible to the public.

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its next General Meeting on Friday 21st October. The U3A offers friendship through learning and social activities to those no longer in full time employment.

Our members have opportunities to be involved in a wide range of Interest Groups. At the General Meeting, Group Leaders and others will be on hand to answer any questions and pass on details about our U3A.

People are invited to the Friends of Snibston Annual General Meeting at 7.00 pm on the 24th October 2016 at the Coalville and District Constitutional Club, 78 High Street, Coalville LE67 6LH to discuss and suggest the way forward for Coalville's rich heritage. There are proposal by the Friends to develop events and exhibitions within Coalville and to work towards the wider heritage development for the community and town. The County Council, who are still responsible for the site, are also proposing to produce a business plan by the end of the year. We must all ensure that plan reflects the views and aspirations of the local community.

This can only be achieved by working in partnership with other authorities and organisations but most importantly with help and support from the people of Coalville and the surrounding villages. Who knows maybe one day a new centre or museum devoted to the story of the Coalville area and its people can be developed?

I look forward to seeing you at the AGM. There is no need to book, just turn up but please bring with you your ideas and support.

Bad Luck Turns To Good For A Local Buzzard!

The morning of Tuesday 13th September staff at Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary, Coalville received an unusual call from workers at the local quarry. Could they possibly take urgent delivery of an injured buzzard who was in shock after flying into a wire fence and then falling in to a water tank.

Rescue centres are used to this type of query and luckily we have a very good contact, Jeff, whose life is dedicated to working with rescued birds of prey and owls.

The shocked and confused bird was duly delivered to Redgate and put into a large dog crate in a quiet, darkened room. Luckily Jeff arrived within half an hour and took his new patient - now named ‘Bardon Buzzard’ – back to his own sanctuary just up the A50. After a check-up and eleven involves a lot of planning and the hardest and often most time consuming part is buying the presents, so get it all done in one day at the Festive Gift Fair and make it FUN!

Former Pupils Reunite At Grace Dieu

special place Grace Dieu was and how they still held a deep love and affection for the School.

Grace Dieu Manor School Alumni was officially launched last Sunday 11th September in the beautiful former Manor House and its grounds, which has been a thriving Prep School since 1933.

A special Family Mass was celebrated by the Right Reverend Patrick McKinney, the Bishop of Nottingham, alongside the School’s Chaplain Fr Denis, Fr Tobin (a former Headmaster), Fr Giles (a former Teacher) and Fr Bland (a former Pupil).

Sunshine lit up the stunning backdrop of the Manor House as former pupils gathered on the Headmaster’s Lawn to enjoy a Summer buffet and entertainment by the soulful sounds of ‘The Strife of Riley’, a local popular jazz band formed by former pupils of the School.

Former pupils’ ages ranged from 16 to 80 plus years. There was much reminiscing about happy days spent at Grace Dieu, swapping stories and memories of old school days. Many described how they had forgotten what a

Staff led tours around the site and showcased the new Day Nursery and Pre-Preparatory Department; the Manor House building with its newly modernised classrooms for years 3-6 enchanted the past pupils as much as they did when they were here. Visitors were delighted to see the many changes that had taken place at the School in recent years, particularly the latest development of our Outdoor Learning and Forest School. The woodland, grassland and pond are now a common feature in the curriculum as well as tending to the chickens and the alpaca herd... Peter Fisher, Headmaster, commented; "Today has been simply lovely. The charm and magic of Grace Dieu is so fondly remembered; seeing past pupils and present share their stories and memories was a joy. Our Alumni launch will enable all our past pupils to continue to be a part of all we do at Grace Dieu.

Pupils at King Edward VII Science and Sport College started the Autumn term with their heads held high. After a difficult 2015, this year the school achieved record results with 56% of students achieving 5 or more GCSE A* - C grades (including English and maths) compared with 27% last year. The national average figure for this measure was 54% in 2015.

Across all subjects, 65% of students achieved 5 or more GCSE A* - C, compared to 52% last year. Individual subject performance is now above the 2016 national average in many areas: maths 70.5% (national 61.0 %), English language 72.4% (national 60.2%) and French 72.5% (national 69.7%).

Students at King Edward VII are also celebrating the successful end to A level studies. The number of students gaining the top grades of A*-C is 65% with a 97% pass rate overall. Everyone who wanted to has secured a place at university (87%) and others have secured high level apprenticeships.

Congratulation are due to the Head, Jenny Byrne and to all the staff and students for achieving better outcomes for young people in our community.

Success is a real team effort; staff at Castle Rock and Newbridge High Schools are also to be congratulated for the part they played. As I said in my September article, factors like family income, gender, being in care, living in a deprived neighbourhood, having a special educational need and moves between schools affect young people’s confidence.

These factors are not so easy for teachers alone to change.

I look forward to meeting with the school to hear about their work first hand. Building confidence in Coalville is everybody’s business.

Save our NHS Services

Councillors are being kept updated with a weekly stakeholder briefing on the Children’s Hearts Campaign.

Leicester Hospitals have met with NHS England to discuss their concerns at proposals to reduce the number of hospitals providing the most specialised operations on children and babies born with complex heart problems.

Liz Kendall MP has commented that “Decisions must be based on what’s best for children and the latest evidence on clinical outcomes shows that the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre is one of the best performing surgical centres in England.”

Concerns about the loss of this service need to be put in the wider context of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland’s ‘Sustainablity and Transformation Plan’ (STP). This 30-page document will be finalised by the end of October. The STP will include detailed information on how the local NHS intends to manage its finance, activity, bed capacity and workforce.

We currently spend £1.6bn on NHS services across the City, County and Rutland. By the end of the STP 5 year plan funding will have gone up to £1.8bn.

Due to an increasing and ageing population the NHS will find itself about £450m short of the money needed. The Local Authorities will be ~£70m short of the funds they need too.

Most of the STP proposals involve trying to find better ways for GPs, hospitals and social care to work together. More controversially, the plan includes moving the acute hospital services onto two sites (LRI and Glenfield). This depends on securing more than £400m of external capital investment.

No decisions will be made until after formal public consultation.

So watch this space!

One of the big events of the last few weeks has been the publication of the first draft of the Boundary review. As many of you will know, we currently have 650 MP’s in the UK in constituencies that range between approximately 50,000 to 100,000 electors. This is a very unequal system and is in need of reform. The Conservative Party stood on a manifesto commitment of reducing the cost of politics by cutting the number of MP’s down to 600 and ensuring that constituencies have approximately the same number of electors, which has meant a significant change in many seats across the UK. It has been initially proposed by the Boundary Commission that the North West Leicestershire seat changes in that is loses Appleby Magna and surrounding villages, Ibstock, Heather and Ellistown which would go into the Bosworth seat. In return, the town of Shepshed would become part of the Parliamentary seat. The District Council boundaries would be unaffected.

I do intend to write to the Boundary Commission to argue that North West Leicestershire should remain as it is. Our population size is already within the permitted levels required after the 50 seat reduction and it makes no sense to bring Shepshed which is part of the Charnwood borough into North West Leicestershire whilst losing an area of roughly the same population in Ibstock and the surrounding villages. Whilst I like Shepshed, I feel I have a duty to my existing constituents to put forward a credible plan of keeping the seat intact. I am sure my Parliamentary colleagues in other seats in Leicestershire share the same loyalty to their electorates.

Anyone wishing to comment should go to the Boundary Commission website at www. bce2018.org.uk . The consultation will be held over 12 weeks.

There is also obviously a lot in the media about the NHS at the moment with the Government ambitions to make it a 7 day service and the Junior Doctors contract.

The reason the Government are focused on the 7 day service is to improve the consistency of urgent and emergency care at evenings and weekends to deal with the "weekend effect" on mortality.

This is being backed up with increased NHS investment of £10 billion per annum in real terms by 2020/21, with £6 billion delivered upfront by the end of 2016/17. The Government has already delivered an additional 10,000 doctors since 2010 and it has committed to increasing the

potential supply of NHS staff by 80,000 by 2020. This will ensure that frontline staff are properly supported in the delivery of a 7-day services. In my view this is essential as none of us can plan to be ill or involved in an accident only Monday to Friday.

There has obviously been the much publicised issue over the new Junior Doctor contracts but I believe this provides a fair deal for junior doctors ,as did their negotiators at the BMA a few months ago ,and therefore the strike action called has been completely irresponsible, putting patient lives at risk. The junior doctors' representatives , the BMA should be putting patient’s first not playing politics in a way that will be immensely damaging for vulnerable patients. What's more, the BMA must be the first union in history to call for strike action against a deal they themselves negotiated and said was a good one. The Government estimates that during the strike 125,000 operations will have to be cancelled, causing upset, misery and unnecessary suffering for many patients and their concerned families.

As far as I am aware, the Government is to proceed with the phased introduction of the exact contract that was negotiated, agreed and supported by the BMA leadership. So it will be phased in from October this year to October 2017.

Locally services have now been moved out of Ashby Hospital and the staff have been redeployed locally. Our local NHS have over the last few years been building up the Intensive Community Support service (ICS) which treats people in their homes. This is an approach I support as we would all rather be in our own homes than in a hospital and I do believe it helps older people recover more quickly and effectively.

I am still requesting the data regarding hospital use to see we have capacity in the area for those who need to be in a community hospital and I will continue to monitor the work of our local NHS services closely.

On a final note, as I write, Jeremy Corbyn has been re-elected as Labour leader. Following this, NW Leics County Councillor Leon Spence has taken the courageous decision to resign from the Labour Party. Although we disagreed on several matters, I have always found Leon to be a moderate and effective Councillor and I believe it is sad for democracy that the Labour Party has moved so far to the extreme left that its moderate supporters feel they no longer have a place in the party.
