ITS PANTO TIME AT HUGGLESCOTE! This year Hugglescote pantomime sees St Johns Church transformed in to Sherwood Forest for the spectacular Adventures of Robin Hood.

This Bradford & Webster version of this classic adventure story see’s the familiar characters as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham, supported by his mystic Soothsayer, Robin Hood and his band of merry men and of course Maid Marian. The fun is provided by Much, the millers son, along with the Sheriff’s hapless tax collectors Nickit and Scarper and Maid Marian’s outrageous, flirty nanny, Dame Nora Tittle Tattle.

Whilst King Richard is away fighting the crusades, the Sheriff of Nottingham is increasing the taxes of the poor people of Nottingham and wants to marry the Kings cousin, Maid Marian.

However Marian soon falls in love with the hero Robin Hood, so the sheriff holds her hostage to dispose of him.

Robin and his merry men soon come up with a cunning plan to get into Nottingham castle to rescue Maid Marian. The events are narrated by the Enchantress of the Forest.

This is a not to be missed good versus evil story, but who will win?

The money raised is split between the Church and the Children’s society, who help disadvantaged children in both this country and abroad.

COPING WITH CANCER PROVIDES PRACTICAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR ANYONE AFFECTED BY CANCER We are an independent, local charity that provides practical and emotional support for cancer patients, their families and carers.

Our services are free and available from the moment a diagnosis is made. Most importantly our support can last for many weeks, months or even years, as long as it is needed by the individual. At any one time, we’re supporting over 500 local people. We do not charge for our services, although any donations to support our work are gratefully received.

Our services include counselling, complementary therapy, telephone support, befriending, a solicitor’s surgery, drop-in complementary therapy groups around the county and a wide variety of support groups and activities. If you would like more information about Coping with Cancer or our services, please get in touch.

One of our many drop-in complementary therapy groups takes place at the Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville on the 1st and 3rd Thursday every month and we are urgently looking for volunteers to help at this group.

LEICESTERSHIRE’S TOP CONVEYANCING LAWYERS WELCOME MORTGAGE BORROWING INCREASE

COALVILLE REMEMBERS This year North West Leicestershire will be commemorating Remembrance on Sunday 8th November.

The day starts with a service at Christ Church, Coalville and St Wilfrid’s Catholic Church at 9.45am followed by the parade, which will depart from the church around 10.35am. The event is organised by North West Leicestershire District Council in conjunction with the Whitwick branch of the Royal British Legion.

A Coalville law firm awarded as one of the top conveyancing solicitors in the country has welcomed reports that mortgage borrowing is at a five year high, and believes property confidence is now at its highest for a decade.

Councillor John Bridges, Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “This is a very important day, to remember all of those who have lost their lives in conflicts both past and present. It would be good to see as many people as possible supporting this day of remembrance paying tribute to our fallen soldiers.”

On Wednesday 11 November at 11am, Councillor Bridges will be at the War Memorial with members of The Royal British Legion for a short service to mark Armistice Day and the two minutes silence. Members of the public are welcome to attend and support this short service.

HERMITAGE HARRIERS FINISH SEASON AS ROAD RACING CHAMPIONS Sunday 6th September saw the final fixture in the Leicestershire Road Racing League get underway, John Fraser 10.

Hermitage Harriers built on their season-long success at the event to secure a collection of accolades: first league place for their senior men’s team beating the second place team by 30 points, first place for the vet men’s team with a 35 point lead and third place for the ladies’ team.

Club Captain Darren Wilson was delighted with the results and said “for me, the achievement of the season is our ladies’ team securing third place. We have never been anywhere near to this before and the progression in our ladies’ team this year has been unprecedented.” The race was also part of the Leicestershire Road Championship series.

The 10 mile race got underway in near perfect running conditions, bright sunshine with a light breeze and with 35 silver vests crossing the starting mat. This included five Harriers who have completed every road race league fixture since the season started in January: Pete Armstrong, Kelly Garrigan-Cooper, Matt Green, Paul Gregory and Katie Wright. The starting line-up also included club coach Mark Perry who continues to return to form following a foot operation earlier this year.

First home for Hermitage was Matt Adcock, who claimed second place overall with an outstanding time of 54 minutes and 54 seconds - a performance which also secured him the 10 mile county championship title. Next home, and also securing a county champs title was teammate Tony Woodward who claimed fourth place overall in a time of 57:20.

The dynamic duo was joined by six fellow Harriers to complete the men’s team, all of whom placed within the top 35 finishers.

Fifteenth finisher Ryan Twigg and 17th place Darren Weston were just seconds apart when they finished in 59:59 and 1 hour and 8 seconds respectively, giving both men a new personal best.

The next three Harriers all finished within less than 1 minute of each other. James Willoughby crossed the line more than 2 minutes quicker than he did in 2014 with his time of 1 hour 15 seconds, Paul Gregory finished off his 100% season with a fantastic time of 1 hour and 22 seconds and Shaun

Coulton, who claimed first place in the vet50 category with his time of 1 hour and 43 seconds.

Coulton also set a new club vet50 record on the day by around 6 and a half minutes, whilst bagging himself a 10 mile PB too. Darren Wilson completed the men’s team with his 33rd position to finish in 1 hour 1 minute and 45 seconds and set himself a new 10 mile PB in the process.

As always, the ladies’ were not to be outdone and put in a solid performance securing both an A and B team on the day. The first four ladies over the finishing mat made up the A team; Bonita Robinson was first home as 13th lady overall in an impressive time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 39 seconds. She was quickly joined by fellow Harrier Louise Mason who claimed first place in the female vet50 category with her 17th place finish and time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 18 seconds.

Third place for the ladies’ A team went to Zoe Sewter who raced around the 10 miles in just 1 hour 15 minutes and 7 seconds, taking over a minute and a half off her 2014 time and smashing her predicted time for the club handicap. Hannah Wheeler claimed the final place on the ladies’ A team with a fantastic performance, clocking a speedy 1 hour 19 minutes and 2 seconds, which saw her finish inside the top 50 females.

Hermitage Harriers ladies’ B team was kicked off by Katie Wright who finished in 1 hour 26 minutes and 44 seconds and placed within the top 100 female finishers.

Next home was Judith Brand, who not only set a new 10 mile PB of around 6 minutes but also claimed 1st place in the female vet60 category. Third place on the ladies’ B team went to Carla Johnson, who has gone from strength to strength throughout the 2015 season. Johnson finished her first 10 mile race in 1 hour 34 minutes and 54 seconds. The final lady to secure a team place in the event was Caroline Townsend, who took more than 4 minutes off her previous 10 mile best to set a new PB of 1 hour 37 minutes and 18 seconds.

Of course, many other Harriers were successful in their own aims and goals. Darryl Johnson set yet another PB for 2015 with his new 10 mile PB of 1 hour 30 minutes and 43 seconds. Alan Percival also secured himself a 10 mile best when he shaved 3 minutes off his previous best to finish in 1 hour 14 minutes and 50 seconds.

Taking a minute and a half off his previous PB and setting his first league race PB since 2013 was Matt Green, who clocked up an impressive finish time of 1 hour 22

minutes and 15 seconds. The race also tempted four athletes to take part in their first 10 mile race: Rob Wells who finished in 1 hour 42 minutes and 42 seconds, Charlotte Pollard who ran 10 miles for the first time ever and clocked up 1 hour 38 minutes and 42 seconds, Colin Mayes who delivered an impressive performance in the vet60 category with his 1 hour 24 minute and 53 seconds finish and,

finally, Tony Noble who delivered a fantastic race in 1 hour 29 minutes and 32 seconds.

Harriers will know turn their attention towards the cross country season in which they will be planning to defend the three titles they won last year: men’s division one, ladies’ division two and combined team champions.

CASTLE ROCK HIGH SCHOOL LAUNCHES THE SECOND YEAR OF THEIR MUSIC MAESTRO PROJECT In September 2014 Castle Rock High School launched their exciting Music Maestros programme and has seen the progress of their students continue to develop. Castle Rock High School set up this project, believing that learning a musical instrument can impact all areas of the curriculum; and also because they feel that learning to play an instrument should not only be for privileged young people. Learning to play an instrument can support to develop perceptual language and literacy skills, intellectual development, general attainment in creativity, and personal, social and physical development; it also enhances wellbeing.

Consequently, Castle Rock High School were very excited launch their new project!

This unique project runs every Monday evening after school and offers all of their year 8 students the opportunity to learn a musical instrument with free professional tuition, provided by the Leicestershire Music Service, as well as some private peripatetic staff. Castle Rock High School provides each child with their own instrument, which they take home and own for the course of the project. There is a vast range of instruments available to learn: trumpet, cornet, euphonium, trombone, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, bass guitar, violin, viola, cello or percussion.

The school also invite Parents and even Grandparents to come and join the students in learning their instrument and are delighted that several have taken up this offer, and play alongside the students in all public performances.

Castle Rock’s Music Maestros were invited to perform at De Montfort Hall as part of the summer concert series in 2015; an amazing experience that will stay in the memories of all involved for many years to come. Castle Rock High School are now looking forward to seeing their new year 8 students take up the challenge this academic year; with almost all of our 200 Year 8 students enrolling on the project and attending the first evening which was on Monday 14th September. Their fantastic year 9 Music Maestros group continues, and they are also being offered the opportunity to work with professional conductor, Richard Laing as they develop their skills for a second year as an orchestra, seeing them progress even further!

he day light hours may be getting shorter and the temperature somewhat cooler, but that doesn’t mean we should be shutting down the garden and diverting our thoughts away from all things horticultural!

There are seeds to be sown, bulbs to be planted and opportunities to learn, develop our skills and plan ready for next year.

We will be offering a range of one day and short courses covering topics such as How to Design your Own Garden, Planting Design, Creating a Cut Flower Garden, Woodland & Shady Gardens, Successional Colour for Borders and Gardening with Grasses. Those new to gardening can build confidence and skills to help tackle their own plot, whilst for those with experience or even their own gardening business they can gain a further understanding of horticulture and design from knowledgeable garden designers.

Love in a Mist - Nigella: Unusual flowers with ferny foliage. The seedheads are great for drying and flower arranging.

Whilst I’m busy organising the Garden School and designing gardens and planting schemes I’ll still find some time to pop out to the greenhouse to sow seeds this autumn. Hardy annuals can be sown right now to germinate before the winter and then slowly develop ready to give an early splash of colour in the spring.

Sweetpeas: Sown now they will flower much earlier than spring sown plants.

Sown into seed trays of good multi-purpose compost and given some frost protection in a greenhouse or cloche, the seedlings can be pricked out into individual pots ready for planting out in early spring. However it is possible to sow direct into the ground. The soil must we weed free and free-draining to ensure that the seeds get a good start before the winter weather hits.

Good varieties to try: Pot Marigolds -Calendula officinalis: Bright daisy blooms in shades of orange, gold, cream or yellow from summer to autumn.

Cornflowers -Centaurea: Blue, Pink & Burrgundy frilly flowers from late spring to mid-summer. A great cut flower.

Once the small plants have developed strong roots they can be planted out into beds, borders or the cut flower patch. Autumn sown annuals grow much more quickly than spring raised plants and often provide more flowers and stronger plants. For the price of a few packets of seed and some compost it’s worth a try.

THE STORY BEHIND PETSTAY Having been with one employer for over 30 years, I had a lightbulb moment and decided I needed to set myself a new challenge in life, but what? I looked at a change of employer/career, starting my own business or franchise.

I had always loved animals and have two spaniels. How could I utilise my existing skills and be involved with animals. The internet search began! In my current employment there was a lot of compliance to adhere to so I was well aware of following procedures how I could use this to help animals.

I eventually came across PetStay, this called on my knowledge of dogs and their needs, customer service experience, telephone skills, marketing skills and a regulated business and logic.

Dogs are very loyal animals and like routine, so at PetStay we take details to match to a carer who can replicate the dog’s normal routine, PetStay carers feed, walk and attend to the dog(s) as their owner would. If they have a treat in the afternoon, watch Vets in Practice on TV & go to bed at 10pm, the carers will make sure this is maintained. All the carers are dog lovers, this is reflected in the dog when their owner returns.

I used my customer service and telephone skills, talking to potential carers and paying home visits. This ensures that their home and garden meet the high standards of PetStay and comply with the Animal Boarding Establishment Act 1963, talking to potential customers and taking details of their dog(s) and each individual dogs needs so that the most suitable carer can be found.

Liaising with the customer and the carer to arrange the ‘first date’ where the dog goes along to meet the potential carer. Producing all the paperwork to ensure the booking goes smoothly form start to finish and the customer can go on relaxing holiday knowing their dog is in safe hands.

Marketing skills – although PetStay is a National Organisation I am responsible for my own local marketing, so I had ‘fun’ creating adverts for local papers and magazines, negotiating the best deals available, setting up Facebook and Google accounts.

Advertising for potential carers is always on going, looking for dog lovers who are at home during the day want the company of a dog.

Regulated business, a lot of people are unaware that to be a Home Boarder you must by law

have an Animal Boarding licence issued by the council, this is to ensure that a certain standard is maintained. The council look at the security of the house and garden, fire safety, cleanliness and how many hours care is provided, insurance requirements. All carers at PetStay have a current licence and insurance.

Logic – this skill is very useful when trying to meet a dogs specific needs. I never realised how many dogs slept on owner’s beds, have a cup of tea or Marmite on toast!

I am surprised and saddened by some of the horror stories I have heard from customers about previous experiences • Carer who lived in flat with no outside area • Several dogs left to run in a yard – my customer had a Chihuahua and when collecting the dog after her holiday found her in a yard with 2 Alsatians and a Labrador!

• Carers who just take dogs in with not meeting them before hand • Being told you can only drop the dog off before 8.30am or after 6.30pm as it is best for the dog to spend a whole day there before settling for the night or for them to go straight to bed – the customer discovered that it was because the carer was at work all day.

• Ongoing to collect a dog at 11.00am, knocking on the door for several minutes, carer eventually appears in dressing gown and says ‘Oh you have just woken me up’ Whilst the above scenarios are providing care in the home, more than one customer has said whilst Home Boarding is better than kennels for it to work it needs to be better regulated.

Over the 15 months I have been trading, I have built up a loyal base of carers covering all of Leicestershire and Rutland and a good customer base with many customers coming back time and again, I have already had lots of bookings for 2016.

It is very satisfying being your own boss knowing that I am making lots of dogs and people happy, the carers who are able to have ‘part-time’ dogs to fit in with their lifestyle and of course the dogs come to stay time after time!. The customers because they can go on holiday (sometimes the 1st in years) knowing that their dog is happy.

Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris)

The crab apple is a medium sized, thorny deciduous tree that grows to a height of around 10 metres. The crab apple has attractive pink white flowers in clusters during April, May and June ripening to small green fruit in late summer. These are extremely sour but make good jelly by themselves or with blackberries or rowan berries. Crab apple wine is reported to be potent.

Hazel (Corylus avellana)

Hazel is a small, fast growing, native, deciduous tree, that will grow to around 6 metres. The hazel tree is often chosen for urban gardens as it is small, colourful and resistant to air pollution. And hazel nuts taste wonderful! It has edible nuts in autumn and bright yellow lambstail catkins in February which provide essential early pollen for bees.

Deciduous small tree, growing to 8–16 metres tall. The Bird Cherry looks stunning in late spring covered with masses of white fragrant blossom. An important tree for wildlife as well as for its ornamental value, it is sometimes seen in parks and as roadside planting, and is a great addition to woodlands. With fruits which ripen in late summer and good autumn colour, this tree has a long season of interest.

The Hedge Fund this year is Hawthorn and Hazel mix with a Rowan tree at 10 metre intervals Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) A fast growing, deciduous hedging plant. It heralds the arrival of spring, has an abundant and spectacular display of white scented blossom, and it develops glossy red haws in autumn. Mix the glaze ingredients to make a smooth, runny icing, adding a bit more juice if needed, then set aside. For the filling, beat the mascarpone with the icing sugar, then stir in the cooled melted chocolate. Spread the filling over the cooled plain biscuits, then press the ‘face’ ones on top – do this just before you want to eat them, otherwise they go soft. Brush with the glaze, using a clean paint brush or pastry brush. Eat the same day.

Preheat the oven to fan 160C/ conventional 180C/gas 4. Put the butter in a bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until smooth. Add the flour, icing sugar and orange zest and beat together to make a softish dough. Knead into a ball and wrap in cling film. Chill for 1 hour.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 3mm. Cut 24 circles with a 7.5 cm round plain cutter. Put them on a couple of baking sheets.

Using a small sharp knife, cut out Hallowe’en faces on 12 of the circles. Gather up the spare biscuit dough and press into pumpkin stem shapes, trimming with a sharp knife. Press to the top of each biscuit with a knife to join. Make lines on the face biscuits with the back of a roundbladed knife, to look like the markings on a pumpkin.

Bake all the biscuits for about 15 minutes until pale golden.

Leave to set for a while, then cool completely on a wire rack.

SLIME BUG CUPS

Time 25mins - Makes 12

Ingredients

4 x 135g packs lime jelly a selection of animal and bug sweets 2 x 154g packs Oreo biscuits

Method

Make up the jelly following pack instructions. Pour a third of the mixture into 12 small glasses or plastic pots. Add a couple of bugs to each pot, then leave to set in the fridge, keeping remaining jelly at room temperature. Once set, add more bugs to each container (lean some against edges, so they stick out the top). Pour over a third of the jelly and leave to set in the fridge. Repeat with remaining bugs and jelly.

For the soil topping, place cookies in a plastic bag and, using a rolling pin, bash into crumbs, then tip onto a plate. Just before serving, sprinkle a layer of soil over each set jelly, then top with a mushroom, a slug and some ants or your choice of creepy crawlies.

he principle topic in my constituent correspondence this month has been the Syrian refugee crisis, provoked in the main by the genuinely heartbreaking photo of the little boy washed up on a beach. The situation in Syria is a human tragedy and the Government has not been standing by over previous months and years. It has been using a large portion of the International Aid budget, £1 billion in total, in helping Syrian refugees, the largest humanitarian aid project in our country’s history.

This is more than the rest of the EU combined and we have saved the lives of many thousands of men, women and children who are fleeing this war-torn area.

We have announced that the UK will be taking in 20,000 refugees from refugee camps, which I believe to be a reasonable and proportionate number. I have been asked why it isn’t more and I will explain my position on this matter. Whilst it has been cited that Germany are taking hundreds of thousands of refugees with an open border, which is why so many have been making perilous journeys from what are safe Countries to get to Eastern Europe and into Germany. What the German Government have also unintentionally done is create a market for ruthless people traffickers who care nothing for the safety of their clients, It is my belief that the Germans did not think through the implications of doing this, they did the wrong thing for all the right reasons and as I write this, they are having to close their borders as are other countries along the route.

The refugees should have been taken from the camps as the UK are doing, so there would be no opportunity for these vile people traffickers who are seeking to make money out the desperation of Syrian refugees and far less risk to their safety.

Like every Country, we have limited resources and the more refugees we take, the less financial aid we can give to the nearby safe Countries to create sanctuary for those being forced out of Syria. I believe the balance is right and we can be proud of our contribution in alleviating the suffering of these poor desperate people.

Parliament has returned briefly this month before recessing for conference season. It was been a very packed session with several important Bills going through, and the announcement of a new Labour Party leader which I will turn to later. A vote has been held relating to the EU Referendum and

though the vote was a technical issue of Purdah, it was one of importance to ensure a free and fair referendum. Purdah is a long standing convention whereby governments refrain from making any major announcements in the run-up to general elections or other polls to avoid influencing their outcome. I voted that there should be a period of Purdah so we have a fair referendum and thanks to a number of my colleagues, we will have this.

One of the more lively debates was on the Government’s Trade Union Bill. Trade unions are valuable institutions in British society and dedicated trade unionists have a strong history of working hard to represent their members, campaigning for improved safety at work and giving support to their members when it’s needed. But it is only fair that the rights of unions are balanced with the rights of hardworking taxpayers who rely on key public services.

It is wrong that politicised union leaders can hold the country to ransom with demands that only a small percentage of their members voted for; causing misery for millions of people and harming our economy too. The Bill will mean there is a minimum turnout in strike ballots, more notice will have to be given and that there is a limit of how long the ballot is valid for. Three million working days have been lost to strikes in the last 5 years, over 80% of which was in the public sector. Given the fact that the new Labour leader and the more militant union leaders seem to be talking and acting as one, it is essential that this Bill goes through to protect people such commuters and the parents who wish to go about their life without the inconvenience an unnecessary strike can cause.

WYATT OPPOSES TORY PROPOSED CUTS TO COALVILLE’S FIRE SERVICE Liberal Democrat local Councillor Michael Wyatt a member of the fire and rescue service in Leicestershire has expressed his major concerns at the new proposed cuts being put forward by officers, and the new chairman of the authority Cllr Nick Rushton.

Under this round of potential cuts being put forward Coalville will see one of its fire engines replaced with a tactical response vehicle.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, I’m extremely concerned about the new round of cuts being put forward. We have already made major cuts and savings which should of tackled the financial shortfall the service is facing.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “To learn that there is more cuts needed which could potentially put lives at risk is a major concern and one which I cannot support. Coalville as

just had a new station built to meet our needs for the local area.

The proposal to replace a fire engine with a tactical response vehicle must be opposed at all cost. I cannot see how anyone can justify reducing our capacity at one of our main stations in North West Leicestershire. I urge everyone to contact the Chairman of the Fire Authority and tell Cllr Nick Rushton that taking away a fire engine at Coalville is unacceptable and will only put people’s lives at risk.”

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS HAVE WELCOMED GRASS CUTTING U-TURN FROM THE TORIES, BUT BLASTED THE TORIES FOR NOT LISTENING SOONER Cllr Michael Wyatt said “Months ago we called for the Tories to review the grass cutting service. There was huge public concern, and doing shoddy work then paying extra to re-do it obviously wasn’t an efficient way to run the service.

At the time, Peter Osborne dismissed what we said as ‘lacking intellectual rigour’, though seems now to have changed his tune.

I’m glad he’s finally come round, but if he’d listened to us sooner, perhaps we could have cleared this mess up earlier.”

It is amazing what you find when you have a clear out. Making room on the shelf for the latest North West Leicestershire ‘Local Plan’ I came across a glossy brochure. Printed in sky-blue and green it came with the visionary title “Imagining our Future: Coalville Leicestershire”.

Back in 2008, Tory Councillor and Deputy Leader Matthew Blain told electors “Coalville is changing into a modern market town – a place that all residents and visitors can enjoy and take pride in”. He promised to regenerate our town centre and make Coalville the main gateway to the National Forest.

The first “Aim’ in the 2008 Tory Plan for Coalville was to create a “first class transit network”. This included upgrading the A511, improving bus services and a space-age “Personal Rapid Transport System” connecting the town centre to the 2000 new homes planned for Bardon Grange.

Where are we now? The new Local Plan for North West Leicestershire is out to consultation. The number of houses planned between Bardon and Grange Road has risen

to 4500. There is no sign of improvements to the A511 and the idea of using the National Forest Line for trains – let alone a hi-tech Rapid Transport System – is an ever receding fantasy.

Instead of building transport infrastructure, the best the current Local Plan can offer is a scheme to widen Hugglescote cross-roads, demolishing its community centre in the process. Instead of an improved retail sector, making use of derelict sites to rebuild Coalville, we have metal hoardings on Hotel Street hiding the stalled Ford Garage development. The Belvoir Shopping Centre that 2008 Tories described as a ‘low quality precinct’ has sunk to new depths.

FUTURE FOR GREENACRES?

The new Local Plan shows little sign of being deliverable in its current form. If it can’t be improved it could be turned down by the Government Planning Inspector.

Without such a Plan, developers will be free to build unaffordable four bedroom homes on every available blade of grass.

NWLeics District Council is consulting local residents concerning the future of Greenacres Flats on Linford Crescent Coalville. The flats have stood empty for a number of years, largely because their design of bedsits and communal bathrooms is unpopular with potential tenants.

Get to a Local Plan meeting near you. Get online at www.nwleics. gov.uk. Have your say, before it is too late.

The Council is proposing to either renovate the building and adapt the flats into more popular facilities or demolish the site and build new houses or bungalows.

There is a desperate need for more social housing, particularly one bedroom bungalows, so these proposals will certainly help. Local Ward Councillor Ron Adams said "I encourage local people to take part in the consultation, and I will keep the community up to date with developments."
