COALVILLE TOWN BOWLS CLUB RAISES £550 FOR LOROS On Saturday the 30th August, Coalville Town Bowls Club held their annual President’s Day. The current president Mrs Marilyn Miles organised the event as a Fund raising day for Loros.

Loros is a charity very close to Marilyn’s heart and has always admired the amazing care that it provides. A triples tournament was held, and played in good humour but competitive never the less.

This was followed by a sumptuous buffet, which was heartily demolished.

The buffet, raffle and donations raised £405 on the day and a further £145 was raised at the Barry McReynolds Memorial Gala held earlier in the year. Therefore making the grand sum of £550 in total.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL GOLF DAY Our fourth annual charity amateur 4-ball golf day held at Rothley Park Golf Club in Rothley in Leicestershire was a great success. We would like to thank our sponsors HSP Tax Limited, Business and Domestic (Motorway Direct Plc), Yorkshire Building Services, Edward Hand & Lewis Solicitors, Aidan J Reed Estate Agents, Premier Platforms and Moseley Brown Developments.

The money we received through sponsorship helped cover the costs of arranging this event and therefore every penny received on the day goes direct to our cause fighting Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

A big thank you to everyone who helped in so many ways, because it could not have happened without the generosity and hard work of Club members, family and friends.

Rainbows was founded by Gail and Harry Moore, whose daughter, Laura, died of Leukaemia in 1989. Laura's favourite thing in the world

was a rainbow. The hospice was officially opened in April 1995 by HRH Prince of Wales and in 2009, a £4m extension was built to create a new therapy wing and separate facilities for young people.

Through its outreach efforts into East Midland’s paediatric oncology units, Rainbows is also caring for a growing number of the region’s children with cancer.

We are unbelievably lucky to have such a fabulous facility on our doorstep and Rainbows is a place where parents can have time off being the full time carer and siblings can all play, watch TV or swim together, something that in the home environment may be impossible.

Rainbows is not a sad place, it is most definitely a place for living! But this comes at a cost, over £4.5 million per year.

SING LOUD BE PROUD COMMUNITY CHOIR Sing Loud Be Proud community choir is now steadily growing. However, we still need more members to be sustainable.

On 29th September we put on a mini concert for friends and family which was a great success and enjoyed by all, choir and audience alike. On 10th October we will be performing in Coalville library for World Mental Health Day somewhere around 11am!

We warmly welcome all new members and the majority of people who have tried us out have come back!

No singing experience is required, you do not need to read music and we promise to put you at your ease!

Everything is learned by ear and is based on having fun and enjoying what we are doing!

FRIENDS OF SNIBSTON SUBMITTED BY: Brian Vollar Chair of Friends of Snibston Over 1000 visitors to the Miners’ Gala at Snibston Discovery Museum on 13st September signed a letter addressed to the leader of Leicestershire County Council, Nick Rushton.

The Friends of Snibston who produced the giant sized letter and organized the signing where amazed at the response from people. Both sides of the original ‘page’ measuring 33 x 47cm and a continuation panel were filled with signatures.

TOP LAUGHS AT HERMITAGE Hermitage Leisure Centre will once again play host to some of the country’s finest comedians on Friday 12 December. After the successful ‘Night at the Hermo’ comedy evening held earlier this year, The North West Leicestershire District Council leisure centre is doing it again.

Dean Courtney is the headline act, a comedian known for his razor sharp wit. Dean has performed at the Apollo in London and is currently touring Britain with his unique act, having worked with and written for the likes of Jimmy Carr, Sean Lock and Micky Flanagan. Supporting Dean will be Kev Connerly, a larger than life act and Liam Smith, warm up man to Jim Davidson and Tony Harris. In addition, the night will also feature rising star Rob Coleman with his deadpan intellectual humour.

On the night there will be a prize draw to raise money for Help for Heroes. Tickets cost just £10 each and attendees must be 18 years and over. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Hermitage Leisure Centre by calling 01530 811215.

“Dear Cllr Rushton, We the undersigned believe that the Cabinet, at its meeting on the 19th September,

should abandon plans to close this museum and actively assist in the implementation of the alternative proposals that have been submitted to save it. The People of Coalville, Leicestershire and beyond.“ The letter will be presented to LCC Cabinet at its meeting on Friday when they will consider a report and the results of the consultation on the future of Snibston. The report recommends delaying a decision until December so that further work can be carried out including consideration of business plans submitted by Friends of Snibston and Mohammed Suleman, Director of Resources at Derby Museums Trust.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR AWARD 2014

Mr Vollar said “ Whilst we welcome more time to consider our proposals we are concerned that the report has not recommended dropping the County Council’s closure plans despite the overwhelming majority of respondents to the consultation wanting it to remain open. ………….

We hope that Cabinet on Friday will heed the wishes of those who completed the consultation, as well as the 8000 plus who signed our petition and the 1000 plus who signed the letter last Saturday.”

The group also raised over £600 selling ‘Save our Museum’ badges.

North West Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce held their first Young Entrepreneurs Award on Tuesday 16th September at the Heartwood Conference Centre in Coalville The night was introduced by James Turner who described how hard it was to be an entrepreneur with a combination of guts, resilience, timing, hard work and a sprinkling of luck needed to succeed.

The cycle of inspiration continues with the new Award which will be given to the person aged from 16 to 23 who is judged to have the best business or business idea and who requires a financial hand. The prize is £1000 and a year’s membership of the NWL Chamber with the opportunity to be mentored by their committee and chamber members.

Three Judges, Lizzy Leary, Andrew Walker and Jim McDermot had the unenviable task of going through the entries and deciding who would win this amazing prize.

Andrew Bridgen MP was the guest speaker who gave an inspirational talk to the young business people in attendance and explained how the government was creating an environment in which businesses can prosper. He explained that the difference between those who achieve and those who don’t can be purely down to who tries.

The 2014 Young Entrepreneur Award went to Kenzi Creations run by Tracy Mumbi and Michelle ChirwaGoacher who run a business offering online tutorials on hair, makeup, nails and fashion.

We look forward to watching Kenzi Creations grow over the next 12 months and look forward the 2015 competition.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE PROJECTS

Some people think music education is a privilege, but Castle Rock High School know its value and impact upon all areas of the curriculum and have implemented a programme called “Music Maestros”.

Music is a unique form of communication which can change the way students think, feel and act.

OFSTED say that student involvement in music engages and reengages students increasing their self-esteem and maximising their progress in all aspects and subjects in their education.

It has been shown to develop students’ perceptual language and literacy skills; intellectual development; general attainment in creativity; personal, social and physical development and finally health their wellbeing. Learning to play a musical instrument can be a life changing experience which can open a world of opportunity.

The ‘Castle Rock Maestros’ allows every child in year 8 the opportunity to learn one of the following instruments; Flute, Clarinet, Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello, guitar/bass or drum kit via musical workshops that take every Monday after school and are facilitated by specialist peripatetic staff. During these one hour workshops students develop skills on their chosen individual instrument as well as developing ensemble skills whilst being part of a symphonic orchestra so that at the end of each term there is musical performance for parents and the community.

IVANHOE STUDENT RACES THE SUN Harry Holman, a 13 year old student at Ivanhoe College, recently completed the ‘Race the Sun’ challenge as part of his Junior Black Belt 4th Dan in karate.

The task took place in the Lake District and consisted of a 50 mile bike ride, climbing Mount Hellvellyn and canoeing around Lake Thirlmere. The race started at 6am and finished at 9pm just before the sun set. The juniors had trained professionals with them at all time to monitor their safety and capabilities.

Harry completed the task alongside another 4 juniors that are all part of the Stealth Black Belt Academy based in Coalville. The academy aims to build stronger, faster and more confident young people.

Harry said “I’m hoping to receive my Junior Black Belt 4th Dan in November and then I’ll move onto my Junior Black Belt 5th Dan.”

Homework has always been a contentious issue; Denmark recently piloted ‘homework free’ schools, France is looking to ban homework completely, last year the previous Education Secretary, Michael Gove decided to scrap homework guidelines for all UK schools.

Whether homework is set or not is up to each individual school to decide, however, Castle Rock High School, has decided to tackle the issue head on, with just one of the ways of addressing this are their Personal Challenge projects.

The Personal challenge projects were run as a pilot last year with over half of the year choosing and completing the projects, the students make a product or presentation based on real world issues that are relevant to their lives. This year every student in year 7 has signed up for one of the projects, they run every Monday after school, (3:20-4:20), by members of staff and external professionals. They each last for a term with a celebration event at the end for each project where there is an exhibition of the students’ work for parents and the community to enjoy.

By being involved in the projects, students also get the opportunity to work alongside volunteers from the Royal Society of Arts, (RSA), a worldwide, charitable organisation that have worked on many successful projects within education. RSA Fellow,

GRACE DEIU RISING STAR OF NETBALL

The art of pasta making was one of the first skills to be mastered by Year 9 students at Ibstock Community College, to kick off their Creative Enterprise specialism.

Ellie Gallacher has just become one of the youngest girls to be selected for the Leicestershire County and Satellite Netball squad. Even though she is only twelve years old, Ellie, a year 7 pupil at Grace Dieu Manor School, has demonstrated great sporting skills and potential for a number of years and is a keen member of the School’s netball, hockey and rounders teams.

During six weeks of food technology lessons, students will learn a range of baking techniques of their choice, including how to make Swiss rolls and profiteroles.

They will also be planning, and baking for, a Macmillan coffee morning at the beginning of October.

Head of Design and Technology Linda Higginson said "The hardest part of making pasta is to keep putting it through the machine. The pasta should be thin enough to be able to see the light through it."

Some of the projects running at the moment are; the building of a weather balloon, (which will be launched this term), forensic science, a baking course which will culminate in students hosting a tea party for family and friends, excitations where students will make items to sell on a local market, car mechanics and mini manicures.

To make pasta, students mixed a dough of flour and egg, before putting it 18 times through a pasta machine.

Keith Stubbs, one of the volunteers and a Director of Learning and Participation at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra stated: “The Personal Challenge Projects are a fantastic idea as they allow students the opportunity to get involved in creating things they perhaps never would’ve thought possible; which instils a real sense of pride and achievement in each of them.”

Ingrown toenails develop when the nail sides curl and pierce the skin. The toe becomes red, swollen and painful especially if more pressure is applied because the immune system reacts as though the ingrown nail is a foreign body.

Over-granulation tissue with a sore moist appearance can begin to grow out from the damaged skin underneath the nail and the toe can become infected. The large toenail is most commonly affected but any nail can become ingrown. People have described ‘ripping them out’ for relief. A GP should be consulted if infection is present as antibiotics may be required, especially important for people with diabetes.

Factors contributing to ingrown toenails include tight shoes or socks, cutting nails too short particularly down the side, nail infections, injury, excessive sweating, poor hygiene and hereditary factors.

Prevention and self management can include good hygiene - soaking and cleansing the side of the nail can help. Nails should be trimmed carefully across to the general shape of the nail with the corners visible above the skin, and not low at the sides.

• For the rats: 1-1/2 lbs. minced beef • 1/2 cup uncooked long grain white rice • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped • 1 egg, beaten • Uncooked spaghetti, broken into quarters • Thinly sliced raw carrots • Black peppercorns, cooked black beans • For the (sauce) blood: 1 can chopped tomatoes • 1-1/2 cups water • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper This dish goes nicely with pasta or mashed potatoes.

PREPARATION METHOD

1. In a mixing bowl, combine the mined beef, rice, onion, egg and 1 teaspoon of the salt. Mix well.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE AT COALVILLE LIBRARY WHILE NEW ROOMS BUILT Coalville library will close temporarily for two weeks next month (November) as work takes place to add two new classrooms for Leicestershire Adult Learning Service to offer courses for adults. The library will close from Monday 24th November and it is planned to reopen at 9.30am on Monday 8th December.

There are a number of ways that members of the public can access library services during the closure, including visiting other locations in the north-West Leicestershire area at Ashby, Measham, Ibstock, Kegworth and Castle Donington. In addition, many library services are now available online. QUIT SMOKING THIS STOPTOBER Smokers in Leicestershire are being urged to extend their life, by giving up smoking in October.

Leicestershire County Council is backing the Stoptober campaign, which encourages smokers to quit for a month – making them five times more likely to quit, permanently.

Benefits of quitting include: • An extra week of life, for every month you quit • Savings of £150 per month, or almost £2,000 per year Ernie White, the county council’s cabinet member for health, said: “The message is clear – smoking harms your health and can kill you. Giving up smoking is one of the best things you can do to improve your health. We’re going to do what we can to encourage more people to give up smoking in Stoptober and, hopefully, forever.”

Here are the key facts about stopping smoking: • After 20 minutes, your blood pressure and pulse return to normal • After 24 hours, your lungs start to clear • After two days, your body is nicotinefree and your sense of taste and smell improve • After three days, you can breathe more easily, and your energy increases • After two to 12 weeks, your circulation improves

COALVILLE REMEMBRANCE SERVICE AND PARADE It’s nearly time for the Commemorative Remembrance Service and Parade in Coalville – and local uniformed groups are invited to take part.

This annual event, organised by North West Leicestershire District Council in conjunction with the Whitwick branch of the Royal British Legion, will be held on Sunday 9 November.

This year’s event will start with a service at Christ Church at 9.45am followed by the parade forming up at 10.35am outside of the church.

Deputy Lieutenant, Major Bream is attending and laying a wreath at the War Memorial along with the Chairman of the Council, and many other wreath layers. The Northamptonshire Cadet Force, F Squadron Corps of Drums will also be in the parade.

This year sees representatives of the Coalville and District Bikers (including ex-servicemen) who will bring up the rear of the parade before making their way to National Arboretum after the service at the War Memorial.

Councillor Graham Allman, Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council said “It would be great to see as many people as possible supporting this day of Remembrance, not only for those who lost their lives in the two world wars, but for those who have died in the current conflicts around the world today.

This year we commemorate 100 years since the start of World War 1, and our special Remembrance service will be one of many very special events up and down the country.”

Enc ouraging Birds Into The Garden

T

he misty cool mornings are here, heralding the arrival of autumn.

Plants are setting seed and berrying up after what has been a wonderfully prolific growing season. There’s a plentiful splash of Hawthorn berries, Rowans and Crabapples giving colour to the hedgerows which have benefited from the long sunny Spring and Summer.

The weather this year seems to have benefited the birds too. My garden has been full of families of Robins and Blackbirds whilst large flocks of Goldfinches and Swifts have been wheeling around above. Birds are not only wonderful to watch, they are also free pest controllers. I often see Blue Tits picking Aphids from the Roses early in the summer and my friendly robin follows me around picking up caterpillars as I dig & weed. So it’s really worth encouraging bird life to help out in the garden.

At this time of year providing food for them in the way of berries, seeds and fruit will encourage a constant stream of feathered friends who will be looking to stock up ahead of the cold winter months.

BERRIES Pyracantha (Firethorn), Cotoneaster and Holly are all popular berrying shrubs with the added benefit of being evergreen so they provide shelter, a refuge from predators and nesting sites too. They are all fairly large shrubs so they’re suitable the back of a border, training on a wall or incorporated into a hedge. Other berrying shrubs like Viburnum opulus (Guelder Rose) or Cornus (Dogwood) which lose their leaves in winter are good for adding into a border as they won’t overcrowd other plants as much.

SEEDS I love to leave the seed heads on the perennials in my border as they look wonderful when glistening with frost during the Winter, they also provide a

nutritious source of seeds for birds too.

Try leaving the seedheads on perennials like Echinacea (Cone Flower), Rudbeckia, Verbena and Echinops to provide a tasty meal for Finches, Tits and Sparrows.

The key ingredients of many bird seed mixes are Sunflower and Thistle seeds.

Annual Sunflowers are oil rich and favoured by Finches and Long-tailed Tits.

Teasels and thistles like Eryngium will provide generous meals for Finches and Sparrows if the flower heads are left on and allowed to develop.

Hardy annuals which can be sown direct into the ground in Autumn or Spring like Cornflowers, Nigella and Poppies offer a colourful display for us through the summer and a plentiful supply of seeds for foraging Finches and Tits in Autumn. Seeds for these are available in garden centres now.

FRUIT We may all love foraging for Blackberries in the Autumn, but so do the birds.

Blackbirds favour these and Raspberries too so if you have them in your garden and you are willing to sacrifice some of your crop you will be rewarded with the song of a very happy Blackbird. Apples and Crab apples provide a water rich source of food for larger birds like Blackbirds , Thrushes and Field Fares who will happily peck at fallen fruit in Autumn, so don’t be too tidy – let the birds have their fill first.

WATER It is particularly important during the winter months to ensure that the visiting birds have access to water as natural sources may be frozen. A simple bird bath or saucer will suffice, allowing the birds to drink and bathe. Keep the water fresh to avoid transmission of disease.

Delaying the garden tidy up in the autumn until the birds have feasted on the berries, seeds and fruits and adding a few seed rich perennials and annuals to the border will pay dividends when the garden is visited by an abundance of wildlife in the year to come.

November is the start of the bare-root plant season – the perfect time to buy great value plants that have been raised in a field and then lifted with bare roots, ready for transplanting in the garden. So next month I’ll be looking at what is available and how to plant bare-root hedging and trees.

SPEAKING UP FOR LIBRARIES AT COUNTY HALL As Labour parliamentary candidate for North West Leicestershire I spoke up for local libraries recently at a meeting of the Adults and Communities Scrutiny meeting at County Hall; making the case for local libraries.

Four of North West Leicestershire’s six libraries are at risk of closure if the County Council follows through its original proposal to cut support for them and hope the community can take over the running of the library.

The County Council’s plans put Ibstock, Castle Donington, Measham and Kegworth Library at threat.

The County Council has finally paused and listened to local concern. It has now delayed a decision on the future of libraries is delayed until November while the Council relooks at the basis made for identifying the libraries set for funding cuts and looks again at the package of support available for communities who take over the running of their library.

As well as meeting NHS staff to talk about the joined up services in place I went out to meet John. John recently returned home after over five months in hospital and talked to me about the care he receives at home.

Council to consider more than just usage when deciding the future of libraries.

In my speech to the Scrutiny meeting I said “If the policy of the County Council is followed through without amendment it puts four of North West Leicestershire’s six libraries at risk. The loss of these libraries would have an irreversible impact on local communities and local people.”

“Libraries not only serve the purpose of lending books, they reach out to the community. They provide computer access to those who cannot at home. They put on events and clubs which support local children to learn and thrive.”

“Let’s not throw away great social hubs for our community that we can improve with the County’s leadership.”

As part of my commitment to protect health services locally and ensure they are of the best quality I recently visited local NHS services.

The local NHS is putting more resources into caring for people in their homes. The intention is to stop them going into hospital and getting them out of hospital more quickly.

I want to ensure that the local NHS is true to its word and North West Leicestershire continues to receive the best quality services. I’ve been able to bring my experience of scrutinising public services from my day job working for a disabled children’s

ANDREW BRIDGEN T: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk Housing and Planning are issues I am frequently contacted about by constituents. Although I have no direct influence over individual planning applications other than representing the views of constituents, I do work with the Conservative group on the District Council to set a strategy for the future of housing provision in the area. For instance, throughout my time as first candidate, and then Member of Parliament, I was adamant that the Green Wedge separating Coalville from the villages of Whitwick, Thringstone and Swannington should not be developed. Working with the Council group, we fought off legal challenges and the area of separation remains.

When the District Council took office, it inherited a plan from the previous Labour administration for the building of nearly 600 houses a year due to the previous Government's regional spatial strategy, which foisted an unsustainable amount of house on the District. This Government scrapped this and the Council is working up a plan for numbers more in the order of 350 a year. You will no doubt have noticed a spate of housing developments recently as the numbers catch up following the great recession. The Council now has a 5 year land supply

meaning the Council will not be forced to pass any developments it considers to be inappropriate.

Last month I spoke again at a Leicestershire County Council Cabinet meeting, this time to address Cabinet Members on the future of Snibston Discovery Park and Museum. The Friends of Snibston are leading an excellent campaign to highlight the importance of the retaining Snibston as it is, and running it through an independent trust, and I am urging the County Council to give every support it can to this proposal. I have raised the issue in Parliament with William Hague and the Culture Secretary Sajid Javid is due to visit Snibston this autumn to see the attraction for himself. On my part, when I look at the enthusiasm of its friends and read the 5 star reviews of its visitors from all around the country, bringing tourist pounds to the District, I think it would be a folly to close one of our major visitor attractions.

You will no doubt have seen all the coverage of the Scottish Referendum last month, and having campaigned for Better Together myself in Edinburgh, I was delighted that Scotland voted by a significant margin to remain part of the United Kingdom.

WYATT’S CAMPAIGN TO STOP BUILDING ON GREEN WEDGE GETS OFF TO GREAT START

Local Cllr Michael Wyatt who is leading the campaign against the development said, "I am hopeful we can again convince the planning officers that we need to object in the strongest terms that this site will not be allowed to be developed. Building on this part of the green wedge will only lead to a massive increase in congestion along Broom Leys Road, and destroy one of the last remaining area's of open countryside, which we must protect. I can assure everyone I will do everything I can to stop this development from happening."

It cannot be right that Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish MP’s have the right to vote on matters that solely affect England, yet English MP’s have no influence at all over decisions in their countries. This anomaly cannot be allowed to continue and I am pleased that the Prime Minister is addressing the matter.

I do not consider lightly. I led the calls for the last recall of Parliament when the proposal was to arm Syrian rebels. That was not an action I was comfortable with, as the situation is Syria is essentially a civil war, and we simply do not know who the good guys and who the bad guys are. In this case, we certainly know who the bad guys are so I voted that we should take action against the barbarous elements who pose such a threat to our Western civilisation.

LIB DEMS ACCUSE TORIES OF WASTING £3,500 ON SNIBSTON COVER UP

The Liberal Democrats are blasting the Conservatives on Leicestershire County Council for wasting £3,500 on covering up report that may have provided evidence in favour of an alternative approach to Snibston.

The Council is planning to save money by closing down Snibston Discovery Centre and replacing it with a smaller mining museum. Supporters of Snibston have been trying to find alternative ways to save the money, one of the ways by putting Snibston into an independent trust, allowing it more flexibility in how it procures its goods and support services.

Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt has announced that over 200 local residents have signed a letter calling on the Council planning officers to object to 250 houses being built on the Broom Leys Farm site, which is part of the Coalville Green Wedge.

Tim Sporne local resident and local campaigner said, "I'm backing Michael's campaign to stop this development. It's absolutely crazy to think they can build on this site when it's clearly going to add over 500 extra vehicles on our already congested local roads. I hope the local councillors on the planning committee see sense and agree with us local residents and object to this proposal."

A Freedom of Information request has revealed that a report investigating the options for Leicestershire’s museums, including Snibston, was decommissioned before it was published. As a result, the County Council could no longer use a third party grant to pay for the work and has had to pay £3,500 for the work itself.

Liberal Democrat County Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “We called for an investigation to be done to look into

giving our museums trust status. It may have given us a way to save the Council money while also saving Snibston Discovery Centre. Now we learn that not only was such a report covered up but that it cost the Council £3,500 of taxpayers’ money to do so!”

The decision on Snibston has now been delayed to December while the Council assesses alternative proposals put forward by the Friends of Snibston Campaign group and the Derby Museum Trust. However, there are concerns that these alternative proposals won’t be given a fair hearing.

Everything we’ve seen so far has shown that the Tories are determined to close Snibston and that alternative plans aren’t even being considered.

We’re asking the Tories to request the consultants for another copy of the draft report and to appoint a neutral third party to oversee the rest of the decision-making process.

If they don’t, it just shows that the only thing they regret out of this mess is that they got caught! I hope they will do the right thing and agree to transparency.”

TERRIFYING TREE With Autumn here, Daniel Dog had been very busy in his garden picking all the delicious ripe apples from his big apple tree and sweeping up all the leaves that had fallen. Every day when he went out there seemed to be just as many leaves on the ground as the day before! This carried on until one day all the leaves had fallen and the apples had been picked and all that was left was a very sad looking tree.

A few days later, on an evening when the moon was bright, Bethany was getting ready to go to bed. She’d had a nice mug of warm milk, put her night dress on and was busy cleaning her beak.

Bethany has never liked winter nights because she’s really not very brave in the dark. So she quickly hurried in to bed and pulled the covers up tightly hoping she’d fall asleep and have a lovely dream. But as the time passed Bethany tossed and turned, she couldn’t get to sleep no matter how hard she tried.

The next morning Daniel Dog came round to invite Bethany to his Halloween party.

‘Good Morning Bethany’ said Daniel.

‘Morning’ said Bethany yawning.

‘Are you ok Bethany?’ asked Daniel, ‘You look like you didn’t sleep very well last night.’

So Bethany explained all about her scary visitor to Daniel who listed carefully.

‘Did you close the curtains after you shut the window’? Asked Daniel.

‘No, I think I forgot’ replied Bethany. ‘So the shadow was coming through the window, it wasn’t in your room’ said Daniel, ‘The moon was very bright last night which would have made shadows look much bigger and darker than normal’.

‘That’s not very reassuring Daniel, it just means the monster looked scarier than normal! I think monsters are pretty scary all the time!’ said a not very impressed Bethany.

‘Hmmm’ thought Daniel, ‘I don’t believe in monsters, I’m sure it must have been something else. Can I have a look out of your window to see what it might have been?’ Asked Daniel.

So Bethany took Daniel up to her room and they looked out of the window. Suddenly Daniel started to laugh!

Suddenly she was woken by a tapping noise.

Tap, tap, tap, tap… it was coming from over by the window. Bethany hid her head under the covers even more, trying to block the noise out… tap, tap, tap, tap…. She could still hear it. So very bravely Bethany got up to see where the noise was coming from.

‘What is it Daniel?’ asked Bethany.

‘I can see your monster’ replied Daniel ‘look over there in to my garden.’

So Bethany looked and started to laugh too!

‘Phew’ said Bethany, ‘it’s just the window banging, I forgot to close it properly!’

So Bethany went over to the window opened the curtains and closed the window tightly, but as she turned round to go back to bed she saw a big, scary shadow on her bedroom wall! It looked like a giant monster with lots of arms all waving at her. A big black shadow against a bright white wall, it was as tall as the room and as wide as the wall and it had so many arms that all looked ready to grab small birds like Bethany. She didn’t dare look round to see the monster at the window, instead she flew into bed and hid under the covers until morning.

1. Go outside and see what kinds of animals are hiding in your leaf piles.

2. When you’ve found leaves in your garden, glue them to pieces of paper and use pencil, pen or crayon to make your creatures complete.

When witches, ghouls and goblins will arise.

When mischief makers always very keen.

To scare us half to death with their disguise.

But never mind. It’s just a bit of harmless fun.

Just a chance to play practical joke.

But then it’s clear to us, when all is said and done.
