The Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council Councillor John Cotterill launched this year’s local Poppy Appeal at the Memorial Tower on Saturday morning and was joined by a number of Air Cadets, members of the Whitwick Branch of the Royal British Legion and Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion for the district council.

Lighting the tower in red is part of a county initiative to show support for the Royal British Legion and will continue until Armistice Day on Friday 11 November.

The Royal British Legion was founded in 1921 and is the UK’s leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions of people who have served and are currently serving in the armed forces.

1188 Coalville Squadron - Air Cadets News

JOIN US

1188 (Coalville) Squadron is currently recruiting cadets both male and female. So if you are aged 12 – 17 and would like to join the local air cadets please come down to the squadron on a Tuesday or Thursday evening It is at the headquarters on Forest Road in Coalville, it starts at 7.15pm until 9.30pm.

Coalville Air Cadets And Veterans Honour Local Victoria Cross Recipients Air cadets from 1188 (Coalville) Squadron joined with members of the British Legion to pay their respects to two local men who were awarded the Victoria Cross.

Coalville Air cadets joined with members of the Whitwick Branch of the Royal British Legion on Saturday 29th October in two acts of remembrance.

The cadets met at the cemetery in Whitwick to remember Thomas Elsdon Ashford. He was a private in The Royal Fusiliers, British Army during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous gallantry during a sortie from Kandahar, on the 16th August, 1880. He helped rescue and carry for a distance of over 200 yards, under the fire of the enemy, Private Massey, of the Royal Fusiliers. He was assisted

by Lieutenant William St. Lucien Chase. Private Massey had taken shelter in a blockhouse. Several times they were compelled to rest, but they persevered in bringing him to a place of safety.

After his military service, Ashford settled in Thringstone, Leicestershire and served as a postman for many years. He was married in Thringstone Church to Betsy Ann Sisson on 29 January 1891. He later moved to the neighbouring village of Whitwick and died on 13 February 1913.

He was laid to rest in Whitwick Cemetery, in the presence of thousands of mourners, though the

grave lay unmarked for many years, until a monument was provided by the local British Legion. His VC is in the Royal Fusiliers Museum at the Tower of London.

Major Ian Flamson remarked that “It was incredible that British Soldiers had been fighting in Afghanistan for so many generations.”

The cadets and veterans then moved to the graveside of William Dolman Bees who is buried in the cemetery on London Road in Coalville. He was a private in the 1st Battalion, The Derbyshire Regiment (later The Sherwood Foresters), during the Second Boer War. It was on 30 September 1901 at Moedwil, South Africa that he was awarded the VC. Private Bees was one of the Maxim-gun detachment, at Moedwil, six men out of nine had been hit. Hearing his wounded comrades asking for water, he went forward, under a heavy fire, to a spruit held by Boers about 500 yards ahead of the gun, and brought back a kettle full of water. In going and returning he had to pass within 100 yards of some rocks also held by Boers, and the kettle which he was carrying was hit by several bullets.

His VC is in the Sherwood Foresters Museum in Nottingham.

Flt Lt Rebekah Harrison-Page RAF VR(T), the commanding officer of 1188 Coalville Squadron said “It is important for the members of the Royal British Legion to pass on their knowledge and traditions to the younger generation so they can be preserved for the future.”

The cadets and veterans then went to the Clock Tower in Coalville to help launch the poppy appeal for 2016.

Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society (Hats) 2016 It’s Panto time again. This year we will be performing GOLDILOCKS AND THE 3 BEARS by Damian Trasler, David Lovesy and Steve Clark TLC Creative.

I am sure you all remember the traditional well known story of goldilocks and her escapades with the bears. A cute and very endearing story from your childhood.

Whitwick And District U3A

The National Memorial Arboretum A Talk By Roger Hailwood On Monday 24 October

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its monthly General Meeting on Friday 18th November. The U3A offers companionship through learning and social activities to those no longer in full time employment. Members are involved in a wide range of Interest Groups, all based on the self-help ethos. Group Leaders and others will be on hand at the General Meeting to answer questions and pass on information. Members and visitors are assured of a friendly welcome.

The speaker at the November meeting will be Dr. Julie Attard with the topic "Whitwick's Big Dig". The Big Dig took place during a weekend in July 2015 and proved to be a fascinating community event. Over 150 local people, young and old, worked with professional archaeologists at different sites throughout the village. This is an opportunity to discover what was revealed about the ancient settlement of Whitwick, mentioned in Domesday as Witewic.

Julie Attard is the Leicestershire Victoria County History Project Development Officer and leader of the Charnwood Roots Project.

At Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall The Friends of Charnwood Forest held their regular talk at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall.

Over 50 members and guests heard a fascinating talk by Roger Hailwood.

She coordinated the Big Dig and her infectious enthusiasm for archaeology should ensure an interesting presentation.

Shepshed Roll Of Honour This year’s exhibition covers Shepshed’s involvement in WWI from 1914 to the end of 1916.

The exhibition starts on Tuesday 8th November till Tuesday 29th November and is free to visit at the Shepshed Library and can be seen during normal library opening hours.

Roger Hailwood is a guide for the National Arboretum. He is part of their promotional team as a speaker at venues throughout the UK. At Alrewas, where he lives, he is regarded as the village historian and he has published several books. In Alrewas he has been a youth leader, a church chorister and a Parish Councillor.

Roger’s talk about the National Arboretum was copiously illustrated by slides and covered its foundation and development, and pictures of many of more than three hundred memorials on the site.

The National Memorial Arboretum is UK’s year-round centre of remembrance and is home to the iconic Armed Forces Memorial which was dedicated in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen.

The Arboretum features over 300 thought provoking memorials nestled amongst lush and maturing woodland. Military and civilian associations are represented alongside tributes for individuals. Rich in design and symbolism, and sympathetic to the landscape they inhabit, the memorials and their stories are waiting to be discovered.

50th Anniversary Action Man Weekend 50th Anniversary Action Man Weekend to be held in the former offices of the Palitoy factory on 3rd and 4th December.

Local Gym Raise £7737 For LOROS On Sunday 10th July local Gym, MP Personal Training, set out to raise some much needed funds for Leicestershire Charity LOROS, and in half a day they raised a staggering £7737. They achieved it by carrying out challenges on gym kit, running a Tombola, a cake stall and a drinks stall. On the gym challenges they asked their friends and family to sponsor them.

Gym owner, Mark Padgett, lost his Mum 12.5 years ago during which time LOROS cared for her, along with his Dad and other members of his family. A few years later LOROS also cared for Mark's Dad during his illness and eventual death, going on to support, once again, Mark and his family through Bereavement Counselling.

Since then, Mark, Sallyann, his wife, and their children have held fundraising events for LOROS, in appreciation of all their support, and in 12.5 years they have raised £45000, working out at £300 for every single month over the last 12.5 years.

Mark and Sallyann would like to thank all their Clients and friends who have helped over the years.......couldn't have done it without them.

Golden Envelopes Found After Coalville Colour Run After the huge success of the Coalville Colour Run 10 lucky runners found a golden envelope in their goody-bags.

Inside the envelope the winners found a golden ticket awarding a free trip to the adventure park Conkers for them and their family.

This was the cherry on the cake after an excellent event which saw more than 500 people walk, jog or run Coalville’s first ever fun run. The approximate 5km route was littered with people cheering on the runners as they went past covered in orange, pink, green and blue powered paint.

At the end of the run the participants were blasted with one more cannon of colour and awarded their medals and goody-bags.

Stacey Goldsmith, runner of the colour run and winner of a golden ticket, said: “The run was fantastic and really well organised.

I had a brilliant time. I did it with my son and husband in around 45 minutes and they both really enjoyed it too."

“The run took us to places we didn’t even know existed like the Urban Forest Park. My husband is

a runner and he didn’t know it was there, however now he says he will add it to his route."

“Finding the golden envelope was a complete surprise and to find out I won a free family pass to Conkers is great. We have been there once before and loved it so we’re really excited to go back again.”

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We came up with the idea of golden tickets as something extra for a lucky few that took part. It added a little bit of magic to the day, and now we’re here having had an amazing event with 10 golden ticket winners and 10 happy families.”

As part of European Restart a Heart Day Andrew Bridgen MP visited The Oliver King Foundation at their launch event in Westminster to show support.

The Oliver King Foundation setup following the tragic death of 12-year-old Oliver King from a sudden cardiac arrest, which kills 12 young people every single week. Oliver was winning a swimming race at school.

In 2012 footballer Fabrice Muamba was shocked 16 times by a lifesaving defibrillator in front of the nation.

We are part of the British Association of Barbershop Singers which are (no straw boaters and stripy aprons) rehearsing at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall, 7–30 every Monday, singing Acappella four part unaccompanied harmony.

Early access to a defibrillator is vital. For every minute that passes, chances of survival drop by 10%.

Signing up to become a Defibrillator Champion for North West Leicestershire, Andrew Bridgen MP said: “I am proud to become a lifesaving Defibrillator Champion for North West Leicestershire.

It is vital that we take action to prevent any loss of life where one can be saved. I will be working with local schools in my constituency to fundraise and get lifesaving defibrillators in our area, protecting our students, teachers

and visitors whilst at school.

It was interesting to hear from the Foundation about how many lives have been saved, including a caretaker at a school who had only received the defibrillator two weeks earlier.

I will be delighted to work as a Defibrillator Champion, saving lives is a legacy that we can all be proud of.”

Twisted information snatched into the air, like the arrival of a brand-new swear word, Until a scrunched up note met the toe of a muddy football boot on the way to biology, And behind the chewing gum and bad words that violated an invitation to a school dance.

LOCAL ADVERTISERS Relationship Breakdowns – Exposing the Myths The breakdown of any relationship can be stressful, and can be more so if there are children and/or if a couple wants to divorce.

The personal nature of a relationship breakdown means that it can be difficult to ask for help or advice, and quite often, people rely on what they are told by wellmeaning friends, family members, and colleagues. Here are a few ‘statements’ that you may have encountered: • Once you have been separated for two years, divorce is automatic • You can have a ‘quickie’ divorce • ‘Irretrievable breakdown of the relationship’ is the only ground for divorce • Once you are divorced, your surname reverts to your maiden name automatically • Step-parents cannot have parental responsibility for their step-children • Courts decide how much child maintenance should be paid • If you don’t pay child maintenance you have no right to see your child • Once a couple have lived together for six months or longer, they are classed as ‘common law’ husband and wife and have the same rights as married couples/civil partners • “When I divorced, my husband/wife walked away with everything, and I got nothing” You may be surprised to learn that each of the above statements is at least partially untrue – some are completely false.

For example, the only way to have the same rights as married couples/civil partners, is

to be married/enter into a civil partnership – those rights aren’t acquired simply by cohabiting for a set period. This can be of particular significance where one partner moves into a property owned by the other, as the partner moving in may not be entitled to an interest in the property upon the breakdown of the relationship.

Likewise, it is often not appreciated that it is the child that is entitled to contact with their parent(s), and not the other way around. As such, a child may still be entitled to see an ‘absent’ parent that doesn’t pay maintenance.

Crumbs! Cake Sale Raises A Large Slice Of Cash For Macmillan

Make A Date For Christmas Craft Fair And Art Exhibition Christmas gifts will go on sale at a festive craft fair at Ibstock Community College on Thursday 24 November.

Local craftspeople will be running stalls selling a range of Christmas goodies, from jewellery and homewares to handmade cards and decorations.

A cake sale and non-uniform day helped Ibstock Community College to raise more than £750 for Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

A cake stall of goodies baked by staff and students was set up in the college library.

Donations from Ibstock Co-op, Cattows Farm at Heather and Haydon’s bakery also helped to boost the total.

Staff and students paid £1 each to leave their uniforms and work outfits at home and to come to school in their own clothes.

Ibstock College students will also run their own stalls selling gifts such as ceramic ware and keyrings made in the college’s design department.

The evening will also feature an art exhibition showcasing artwork by college students and by pupils from local primary schools.

Organiser Sophie Williams said “There was a fantastic response to the cake sale. We had expected to sell out by breaktime but we had so many generous donations that we were still selling cakes at lunchtime.”

The fair and exhibition run from 3.30 – 7pm. Entry is 50p.

It is not too late to book a stall for the event. Anyone interested in running a stall should contact Lee Sheldon on 01530 260705.

Last minute donations are expected to push up the final fundraising total further.

Wyatt Welcomes Action To Improve Former Litten Tree Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt has welcomed the decision by the council to help the owner revitalise the area.

Cllr Wyatt said "Cleaning up the shop fronts is a major step forward but what we need now is the council to go further by trying to help the owners find someone to utilise the building, otherwise the renovation will be a complete waste of taxpayers money. I know the council could do more to promote our Town. My biggest concern is that the current administration is more interest in Ashby than Coalville which should be our number one priority."

Wyatt Attacks Decision By The Conservatives To Cut All Funding To District Councils Towards Recycling As Short-Sighted, Mean And Unnecessary All 7 district councils including North West Leicestershire responded to a consultation exercise on the future of dry recycling warning they may have to reduce the frequency of recycling and rubbish collections if the County Council stops paying recycling credits. Despite all the districts saying it will have serious consequences, Tory councillors voted to scrap the current arrangements from 2018.

DR TERRI EYNON Overwhelming cuts to Highways maintenance

Central government cuts will leave County Highways facing 78% budget cuts for road maintenance.

These cuts will affect not only potholes but also the management of highway drainage (gully emptying) across the County.

Blocked gullies and ditches are a common cause of local flooding that ruins people's homes.

It is perhaps not a good time for Leicestershire County Council to find itself given a new role as the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA).

The new role comes with devolved responsibilities for investigating flood incidents, enforcing landowner responsibilities and recommending improvements. The LLFA will be a statutory consultee for future planning applications.

Their advice will sit alongside the surprisingly reassuring reports NWLDC planners receive from Severn Trent.

Councillors have been told that the LLFA has no ‘big stick’ with which to enforce other agencies responsible for the causes of flooding. If flood alleviation schemes are identified, it can bring together a bid for funding.

Private water suppliers have little incentive to proactively invest in renewing the country’s Victorian pipes and sewers.

The current Government’s pinching austerity and softhearted attitude to private profit is best described as penny wise and pound foolish. A lack of funding for infrastructure is putting in jeopardy the housing and business development this country so desperately needs.

Reduced funding for Mental Health support Leicestershire, Leicestershire and Rutland Councils and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are consulting on a plan to create "Recovery Hubs" to help people with mental health difficulties to stay well, or to recover if they do become unwell.

Each hub will be expected to provide information and advice to help their local population navigate their way to community support.

Because of continuing financial pressures, the local authorities and the CCGs may have only half as much money to spend on these services in the future.

The CCG and Councils are hoping that, by working together effectively through pooling funding and resources, they will be more able to provide the support people need in places they know within their local community.

I am concerned that, if we fail to develop these Hubs out of the pre-existing assets, building on community knowledge, we are at risk of creating another institutional silo in the voluntary sector, paid to tick boxes rather than find real solutions.

Recovery: making it real Official statistics published 18 October 2016 found a strong relationship between deprivation levels and whether patients recover from mental illness after "talking" therapies such as counselling, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and peer support.

CBT teaches people a range of new skills to help them overcome depression and anxiety. One of these is ‘Problem Solving’, helping people to overcome real life difficulties such as isolation, debt and worklessness.

It is difficult to help people out of the mire when external forces are conspiring to push them back in. Zero-hour contracts, cuts to Personal Independence Payments for wheelchair users and cuts to Housing Benefit for people with a spare room who have nowhere to downsize to (Bedroom Tax) can only add to a sense of insecurity, hopelessness and despair.

Earlier this month, Amazon formally took possession of their new one million sq ft distribution centre located at Ellistown. The unit which will create over 500 new full time jobs and many more temporary seasonal vacancies is the size of 20 football pitches and represents a significant boost to our already strong local economy.

For Amazon to set up here shows confidence in our District and our workforce and highlights again the important role in our local economy that is played by logistics.

In our area, around a third of all the jobs are distribution or distribution related with many provided at East Midlands Airport which is second only to Heathrow in the amount of cargo freight that it handles. These jobs will be soon supplemented by the East Midlands Gateway located north of the airport which looks set to create another 7000 jobs and which will boost our economic growth for years to come.

With its key role in our local economy, I take a great interest in how Government policy affects the logistics industry and act in Parliament as the Treasurer of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Freight Transport, and I believe I am the only MP to be a qualified transport manager. This week, I chaired a logistics policy forum and it is clear that while the increasing efficiency of the industry continues apace, there are fundamental challenges is faces.

Over the last 15 years, the average age of a lorry driver has increased from 45.3 years old to 48 years old.

Clearly this is a worrying trend and more must be done to promote both HGV driving and all the other jobs in logistics in our schools and colleges.

I am therefore pushing the Government for more vocational funding for logistics based courses and qualifications. I also believe there should be more promotion of a career in logistics within our education sector. The logistics industry is worth £55 billion a year to the UK and makes up 5% of our total economy. It also underpins so much of the rest of our economy. We should be proud to be at the heart of

this industry and of its huge contribution to our economy.

Our local economy is continuing to perform and provide growth and jobs. I would urge anyone looking for a job or new career to attend the jobs fair being held at Stephenson College on the 28th October. Over 2,500 jobs are available and careers guidance is on hand. Unemployment is down by over 100 people in the District over the last year and the constituency is in the top 20% when it comes providing employment.

I was disappointed to learn that North West Leicestershire District Council are making moves to reverse their opposition to HS2.

I read with interest the recent report the Council commissioned into HS2’s impact on the District and found its arguments "in favour " totally unconvincing. For instance, the report tries to argue that cutting down trees in the National Forest that have matured over the last 2 decades will present an opportunity to plant new trees! This seems an utterly ludicrous argument. If the second phase of HS2 does go ahead, North West Leicestershire faces years of disruption which will have an economic impact on the area on top of the blight we have suffered since January 2013, with the benefit of being able to get to London from Birmingham a few minutes quicker , but paying more for the service in nearly 20 years’ time I will urging Councillors at NWLDC to reject the attempt to reverse opposition to this scheme which I believe is a white elephant growing larger all the time.

On the subject of the National Forest, I was pleased to attend a reception in Parliament to mark 25 years of the company. The Defra Minister Therese Coffey spoke of how impressed the Government has been with the transformation of our local landscape. From a base of 6% tree cover, it has increased to over 20% and is continuing to increase and provide new industry and jobs as well as a much enhance environment in which to live , work and visit.
