WELCOME TO YOUR NOVEMBER ISSUE As Autumn is well and truly upon us thoughts are turning to Christmas and festive family gatherings. I know that Christmas can be a time of stress and anxiety especially for those of us with large families and for me, as mum to three boys, it’s all in the planning! Lists become my best friend and every hiding place in my house is full of bags and boxes.

This month we have included a fun Christmas cake recipe which is perfect for family parties especially for those with children. Our competitions have also got a festive feel with a miniature Christmas tree up for

THE TREBLE ONE TRUST The Treble One Trust is a local charity launched in May this year

by Leicestershire Police Sergeant, Stewart Sparling, who recently died of Motor Neurone Disease.

Stewart was only 43 when this dreadful disease finally took his life. Having been diagnosed in September 2011, he lived life to the full, making the most of every day with his friends and family.

However, during the latter stages of the disease, it was very clear to Stewart and his family that there was little or no support for the purchase of essential equipment needed to make the already daily struggle that little bit easier.

Through a series of successful fundraising activities and events,

grabs and also a stocking full of children’s gifts!

Bel is helping us get our gardens ready for winter and we also have some lovely events happening across the town so do get involved and pop along to support our local groups.

I spent some time last month talking to shop owners on the outskirts of the town and offering them our support to attract new customers from the town centre. It was so sad to hear quite how many customers are now not walking beyond the centre. Our Shop Local pages will offer low cost advertising

to them and enable you to see the wonderful array of independent shops just outside of the market place.

I hope you all enjoy this edition and I shall prepare your Christmas edition ready for the end of November for you.

Stewart was able to purchase the mobility equipment he so badly needed but he was also very much aware that others were less fortunate and didn't have the support of family, friends or a supportive workplace such as Leicestershire Police.

This prompted Stewart to launch his own charity, The Treble One Trust (named after Stewart's collar number) to help other local MND sufferers in the latter stages of the disease.

Motor Neurone Disease is known as the silent killer as sufferers become unable to speak, eat, walk or even breathe unassisted. Sadly, there is little or no support, particularly in the latter stages when mobility is key to keeping a dignified independence for as long as is humanly possible.

Stewart has naturally left a huge hole in many people's lives particularly his wife, Angie, and two children, Caitlin and Lewis, who are still very much coming to terms with losing their beloved father and husband to this 'silent killer'.

This week marks the launch of a brand new website to help raise awareness of both MND and the charity, so we would be very grateful if you could please promote this as widely as possible.

Memorial to the Victims of the Zeppelin Raid on Loughborough 31st January 1916 The Loughborough Carillon Tower & War Memorial Museum and Charnwood Arts have commissioned a new memorial to honour the victims of the raid and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outrage.

The memorial will take the form of a large bronze plaque (40 x 48 inches) the artwork was done by Mr Paul Gent and the plaque will be cast by Taylors Bell Foundry.

The cost will be £6000.00, Loughborough University have already donated £750.00 and the Carillon Museum have given £1000.00 towards the cost but we need your help to raise the remaining money.

COALVILLE LIBRARY’S CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAYRE

CHICKEN LEG IS FOOD FOR THOUGHT FOR SCIENTISTS Young scientists at Ibstock Community College took a handson approach to their work on cells and organisms, by dissecting a chicken leg. The Year 7 students were asked to identify different parts of the leg, such as muscle and bone, and to make notes on what they discovered. The experiment followed earlier work on cells which included examining cells from an onion and from inside their own cheek.

Gayle Andrews, Head of Science, said "We are starting to think about how the body is organised into different levels and how cells work together: cells make tissue, tissue makes an organ and so on. We looked at the chicken leg to see what the different tissues were like and how they worked together.

When it comes to learning, there is no substitute for allowing students this sort of hands-on experience and the opportunity to find things out for themselves.”

Students will follow up their dissection work by looking at the skeleton.

KING POWER CAREERS FAIR IS A WINNER A careers fair at the King Power Stadium gave 45 students from Ibstock Community College an insight into some of the career options available to them.

The fair, which was aimed at students from Years 9 to 11, offered advice and information about college courses, sixth form study and apprenticeships.

For Ibstock’s Year 9 students, it was a chance to pick up ideas and to

The Community Capacity Building Project (CCB) is here to help local people develop new projects that will improve the lives of residents in Greenhill and Agar Nook in Coalville.

These projects should be based on skills, hobbies and interests of local people or something you enjoy doing. They can focus on any area that you think could be made better in your neighbourhood. The key points we would ask you to think about are what you would like to see in the area and how could you possibly help to bring this about?

For example, in South Wigston our team has worked with local residents and Oadby & Wigston Borough Council to organise a family fun day to help children get active and give families something to do over half term.

The project areas CCB could support wouldn’t be limited to sport and family activities. Our team can support you with any type of project or activity that you are interested in running. We are really interested to hear about your ideas and how you might be able to get more involved in the local community.

How can CCB help?

CCB staff can provide practical support and advice to help you get your project off the ground and connect you with other people in your community who also want to get involved. There are lots of people out there who

could possibly support you with any ideas you might have – it’s just a matter of making links with these organisations and individuals.

Our team can even help you recruit volunteers for your project and much more. Just get in touch to share your ideas and we’ll see how we can help take it forward.

Board games devised by Year 9 students at Ibstock Community College have been helping them to understand Hindu beliefs about life and death.

Ben Hemmerman, head of careers at Ibstock College, said "I think the students found it a very valuable experience. Most of them had a conversation with a careers expert about something that engaged them - and they all came away with a bag full of free goodies."

The visit was part of a concerted focus on careers for Year 9 students, in the run-up to making their option choices in the new year.

As part of their religious studies, the students were asked to design and make a board game to teach younger children about Hindu beliefs. Their games focused on key words such as reincarnation and karma to help children learn through play. More complex concepts included the law of samsara and the four ashramas.

Students based their games on familiar formats such as snakes and ladders and true or false.

The students tried out each others' games, in a peer evaluation exercise, judging them on their educational and entertainment value.

Teacher Abby Lester said “The students were asked to come up with their own board games as a fun way of reinforcing what they had learned.”

GRACE DIEU YOUNG POETS HAVE THEIR WORK PUBLISHED Two young writers from Grace Dieu Manor School greatly impressed the judges with their literary skills. Georgina Hessey and James Tallett, both Year 7 pupils, have just discovered that their poetry is to be published in Out of This World - East Midlands Voices. Their poems were entered into The Young Writers’ National Writing Competition, an initiative set up to raise awareness of creative writing and promote the enjoyment of reading and writing.

LOCAL GREEN FIELDS IN COALVILLE UNDER THREAT AGAIN Liberal Democrat Cllr Michael Wyatt along with many local residents from his local area in Coalville are again having to fight against the building of 180 new houses off Greenhill Road after a very lengthy campaign.

Several months ago Officers and Councillors of the planning committee rejected the planning application by Gladman. Now Gladman have submitted an appeal which is to be heard at the council offices from the 4th November by a planning inspector.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said, “I am hopeful that the planning inspector will see that we do not need these additional houses on the site, which is classed as an area of natural beauty. I really do think it’s outrageous that Gladman decided to ignore the wishes of the local residents, Councillors and planning officers that we do not

THOMAS GILES TENNIS NEWS Thomas Giles of Coalville Leicester has had a very busy summer season of tennis. The season has just finished with Thomas finishing no 4 on the Midlands Regional Leader board and no 23 with a GB filter on those results. An accolade attained by competing in regional Grade 3 tournaments over the summer season.

Thomas summer started with an invitation to train at a regional training camp in April, recognition of his hard work and progression within his tennis and an invitation made to very few boys across the Country. Only 3 months into the season saw Thomas tennis rating move from a Green 1 to a Green 1*. To gain this recognition a player has to notch up 20 wins against other equivalent or higher ranked players.

Thomas started his competition run in July at Winchester and came up against a very strong line-up of boys. He then went off to Manor Park in Malvern where he eventually came 4th after losing the semi-final to a stronger older player. Thomas then teamed up with Ryan Price and both boys put on a fantastic show of doubles tennis to get to the tournament final. They came away runners up but having had a great experience and with trophies for their efforts too. At the end of July Thomas travelled to the seaside town of Cromer to play in the Junior Open.

The sea air definitely agreed with Thomas as he came away with a convincing win and only dropping 2 games in the whole tournament, winning the first round 4-0, the quarter final 4-1, then facing a Nottinghamshire player in the semi-final and winning that comfortably 4-0. Thomas then faced the Norfolk no 1 player in the final and came away winning 4-1. This is Thomas first Green G3 win and he came away happy with a voucher to spend.

Next was a tournament at his home training venue, Dan Maskell tennis centre at Loughborough University. An extremely tough line up of mainly older boys proved a little too much and Thomas lost in the quarter final but never gave up and battled and fought to the very end, winning his final match 4-2 4-2. Thomas competed then at Edgbaston Priory, Nuffield tennis academy and West Bridgford Tennis Club.

He came away with a consolation draw, a 3rd place and 4th place, playing on a variety of surfaces, hard court, clay, savannah and through all sorts of conditions with wind, rain, and full sun all to add to the challenges.

U10 NATIONAL DEBUT FOR THOMAS GILES

The final tournament of the season was the Leicestershire County closed held at Leicester Lawn tennis club. Thomas is very proud to be a Leicestershire player and therefore holds this competition with the highest regard of the whole summer. He played some strong tennis on Monday 24th August to steadily work through the rounds of boys to make it to the semi-finals.

Thomas was supported by his coach Tom Kisiel who is also the Leicestershire County Coach for various age groups, and his fitness coach Chris Mears of Function Fit. The semi-finals were played on the finals day of Saturday 29th August. Saturday saw a glorious day, great weather and ideal tennis conditions with lots of support from family and friends of all the players competing that day.

Thomas played Jack Minski in the semi-final and they had a dramatic match, both boys pushing each other to the limits. Thomas took the first set 5-3. Jack came back in the second set stronger and held no prisoners taking the set 4-1. The match ended in a closely fought tie break where Jacks older years and strength held through to take the win with a very close score of 10-8. Thomas played well and was not upset to lose to a good friend and training partner.

Thomas was supported on the day by his coach Jonny Rudge and fitness coach Chris Mears.

Last weekend Thomas of Coalville Leicester played in his first U10 Green ball National Competition.

There are in total four National competitions in the Winter season. The first boys one was at Nottingham Tennis centre on the 17/18th October. The entrant list totalled 70 boys from across the country, so a tough call from the outset. 32 boys were accepted into the competition and Thomas who currently trains with Tom Kisiel at Loughborough Dan Maskell Tennis Centre and Jonny Rudge at Loughborough Lawn Tennis Club was very proud to be chosen as one of them. The competition started bright and early Saturday morning. Thomas completed his fitness warm up as instructed by his fitness coach, Chris Mears of Function Fit, and so he was fully ready to play. The first match was against Zac Essenhigh from South Wales. Thomas had a nervous start and lost the first set 4-2. The second set saw some ups and downs, loosing the first game, but then settling down to find his form and so taking the next 3 games in a row. Zac managed to pull a game back so Thomas is still ahead at 3-2. Thomas took the set convincingly at 4-2. So at 1 set all both boys tentatively start their tie break. Thomas goes 5-4 down but reacts well to take the next 6 points in a row, winning the tie 10-5 and so the match. This puts Thomas into the next round and in the last 16 boys.

Thomas then returns to Nottingham again bright and early on Sunday morning, full of hope for a great position.

Thomas starts against Angus Howard from Kent, another player who has a 12U passport.

Thomas takes the first set 4-2 and is hoping for a win. The second set goes neck and neck and so to a set tie break which unfortunately Thomas lost.

Emotions set very high and after a 1 hour 30 minute battle Thomas looses the match tie break to Angus.

Thomas has recently been invited to train with a squad at the Nottingham High Performance Centre which he is very proud of. He is still very busy training with Tom Kisiel at Loughborough University and with Jonny Rudge and Chris Mears at Loughborough Lawn Tennis Club. Thomas has also been busy over the summer with Ball Crew duties. He helped at the National World Deaf championships at Nottingham in July and he was lucky enough to work with and meet Dan Evans at the Mens British Tour championships at Nottingham that Dan won just before going to take part in the Davis Cup. Thomas also finds time to fit in other sports and also plays basketball with Ashby Aztecs and is a member of the Ivanhoe Robins athletics club. Thomas is looking forward to his final Green U10 Winter season and will soon start to train and compete early at U12 level.

Thomas is hoping to gain national competition entries for his age group this season too.

The competition was not over yet and Thomas still had 3 more matches and was battling for a Top 12 place. He plays Freddy Blaydes from Cumbria next.

Thomas struggles at first and goes 3-0 down. He then finds his feet to play some truly amazing tennis and takes the set 5-4, winning the set tie break comfortably at 7-1.

Thomas then plays some ruthless tennis to win the second set 4-1 and so the match is his.

Thomas then faced Sean Helstrip from Avon. Sean is currently on a 12U passport awarded by the LTA and so he knew this match would be tough. Thomas went in with the right attitude but Sean took the first set comfortably 4-1. Thomas was on fire in the second set, battling from 3-1 down to level up at 3-3 but Sean was just too good and took the second set 5-3.

Thomas learnt a lot from playing a great player.

The final match is against Darcy Pycroft from Sussex. Darcy plays a solid game and takes the first set 4-1. Thomas true grit and determination shows through in the second set and at 3-1 down he saves 3 match points to then take the set 5-3. So at 1 set all Thomas is facing another match tie break.

Darcy plays a very clever game at this point and so takes the win.

Thomas finishes the competition in a very respectable and proud 12th place. This currently is his national ranking position which could move up and down as the season progresses and the next 3 national competitions are played.

The next one is at Gosling Tennis Centre on November 14/15th.

CHRISTMAS TREE

Bake to impress with this stunning edible centrepiece - perfect for a Christmas party buffet, or as an alternative to Christmas pudding FOR THE CUPCAKES

METHOD

• 200g butter, softened • 200g golden caster sugar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 2 eggs • 200g self-raising flour • 2 tbsp milk

FOR THE ICING

• 300g butter • 525g icing sugar • 3 tsp vanilla extract • Green food colouring • Sweets, to decorate • Large white chocolate star • Edible gold spray • 24-hole mini muffin tin • 48 green mini-muffin cases • Small plant pot or mini bucket (roughly 13cm across the top) • 12cm foam cone (measured across base) • Cocktail sticks • Green paint

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line the muffin tin with the muffin cases. Put half the butter, sugar and vanilla in a bowl, and beat until pale and fluffy. Add one egg and mix well. Add half the flour and milk, and mix with a spatula until combined. Use 2 teaspoons to distribute the cake mixture evenly among the cases and bake for 12 mins until risen and golden, and a skewer inserted to the centre comes out clean.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Repeat to make another batch of 24 mini cakes.

While the cakes are cooling, make the icing. Put the butter and icing sugar in a bowl and beat until smooth. Add the vanilla and food colouring, and blend again until evenly coloured. Transfer the icing to a piping bag fitted with a small star nozzle. Once the cakes have

cooled, use a skewer to make a small hole in the base of each cake. To decorate the cakes, pipe blobs of green icing over the surface of each one.

Now you’re ready to start assembling your Christmas tree.

Paint the foam cone all over with green paint and leave to dry – don’t worry about it being too neat. Push the cone into the pot. To build the tree, push a cocktail stick into the base of each cake and press it into the cone.

Continue until the cone is covered in cakes, trying to keep them as close together as possible. You may have some left over, which you can serve alongside the tree.

Spray the chocolate star gold and put on top of the tree, then decorate the rest of the tree with sweets. The cakes will last for about 3 days.

Choosing Garden Trees We’ve had a fairly dry autumn so far although it is now cooling off with misty mornings and showery spells. The bonus of this time of year is the soil still has some warmth from the summer and the soil is moist without being waterlogged. It’s the perfect conditions for planting all manner of plants whether they are container grown, loose bulbs or bare-root.

We’ll soon see trees being offered by nurseries garden centres.

Planted now whilst the weather is favourable, they have the opportunity to establish and settle in before the demanding spring and summer season is upon us.

There are several forms to look out for: Bare-root plants - The term bare-root applies to plants which have been grown in a field for several years before being lifted and the soil removed from their roots. Although this sounds like a brutal treatment, the plants cope perfectly well and you’ll also find that bare-root plants are the cheaper option.

Crabapples

Container grown - Container grown plants are a more widely available option. They tend to be more expensive but establish well and can be a safer option if you’re not green fingered. Look for well rooted plants which look health and have no signs of dead branches or diseases on the stems.

Japanese Acers

Root-balled plants are also an option. These are grown in a field like the bare-root plants but when they are lifted the soil around the roots is kept intact and then wrapped with hessian to protect it. Root-balling is generally carried out for evergreens rather than deciduous trees. Ensure that the root-balls have not been allowed to dry out at the nursery or prior to planting, otherwise they will struggle to establish and may drop their leaves in spring. So beware!

With the options reviewed, what varieties are there available to fit small to medium sized gardens?

Well there are lots to choose from, but I favour the following as they provide several seasons of interest.

Japanese Acers - There are so many varieties of these maples offered by nurseries, each with a different leaf shape, habit or colour. Ideal for growing in pots these prefer slightly acidic compost when planting. Heights vary but most are slow growing and make good trees for small – medium gardens. These are best bought container grown.

Hawthorn (aka Crataegus) - there are some lovely ornamental forms which are hardy, will tolerate less than ideal soil conditions and grow to make dense trees of around 12-18ft. Crateagus ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ has rich double pink blooms in early spring and golden foliage in autumn. Crataegus × lavalleei ‘Carrierei’ has large glossy leaves from March right through to December, white blooms in spring followed by masses of cherry sized orange berries in the autumn – a great tree for small gardens.

Ornamental Cherries (aka Prunus) – There are so many varieties available but I favour the simple forms like Prunus ‘Okame’ which flowers in Feb-March and the large ‘Tai Haku’ which is smothered in very large white blooms in spring. Both have fiery autumnal foliage colour.

It is surprising how the vertical structure of a tree can change the look of a garden. Visit your local centre/nursery to see what catches your eye. Christmas will soon me here so next month I’ll be looking at how to spruce up the home with festive table decorations.

Structure

Agar Nook Community Centre is run by a charity called Agar Nook Community Association (ANCA).

This charity is made up of people from the local community residents, centre users and local representatives who: • Help organise events like Fun Days and day trips • Support volunteers that work at the Centre • Help manage finance, health, safety and training • Promote the centre and encourage people to use it • Fundraise to make money to support the centre • Set up projects to help people in the community • Work with other agencies that offer advice • Provide a friendly, safe place for everyone to use • Help and support people dealing with problems • Provide lots of fun activities for people to try out • Provide activities that will help educate and train The charity is run by a Management Committee, who meets every month to discuss the progress of projects and make decisions about future plans for the Community Centre. Smaller teams work on other projects in between meetings. Although EMH Homes own the building the Management Committee leases the building from them. This means that the centre is managed by people in the community and

every care is taken to keep people who use the Community Centre safe and happy.

Emhhomes have over three hundred properties on the Agar Nook Estate. They have a keen interest in supporting this community because it is in an area of high deprivation and houses many families with complex needs. As a result Emhhomes recognises the need to have a community venue that can be used by their residents.

Emhhomes employ a part-time Development Worker and Caretaker that are based at the Community Centre and also offer a grant to ANCA to support young people’s activities. Under the terms of the lease agreement emhhomes also maintain the property, keep it secure and offer financial support and advice.

Preschool History

For over twenty five years a playgroup ran from the Community Centre hall as a Social Enterprise. However in 2012 the manager had to leave which threatened the future delivery of the playgroup. The proprietor of a childcare company offered to take over the running of the playgroup which became “Little Kangaroos Preschool”. In May 2013 the preschool was given ‘Satisfactory’ in the Ofsted inspection. As a result of the inspection, plans were put in place to move the preschool to a more suitable place with free flow outside space. The numbers of children attending

preschool remained stable for the first two years. The preschool operated five days a week, Monday to Friday 9 to 12 noon, term-time only. However, over the last academic year the number of children attending dropped, leaving only five children to start at the commencement of the academic year (September 2015-16). As a result, four staff were made redundant, with the intention that the proprietor and manager would run the preschool themselves. However, the proprietor has decided not to return, so ANCA are looking for someone else to take over Little Kangaroos.

During the summer holidays the preschool premises moved into a new area of the Community Centre, which has been purpose built for preschool provision.

Over £10,000 has been invested in alterations by David Wilson Homes with extra work done by the Emhhomes building team to the new nursery/preschool which proves the commitment of both ANCA and Emhhomes to keep this valuable resource at the Community Centre.

What Next?

Expectations

The closing date for the Expression of Interest is Friday November 6th at 5 pm. We will be short listing our applicants on Tuesday November 10th and if we feel we could work with you further we will invite you to come and showcase your proposed nursery/preschool on Saturday November 14th (time tba).

ANCA will seek to establish a good working relationship with the new proprietors of the nursery/preschool, one that will benefit everyone, but especially the children. We envisage that a room hire agreement and Service Level Agreement (SLA) will be established, based on the needs

We also hope that you will play an active role in the activities and associated fund raising of the Community Centre.

We will look favourably on applications from room hirers that want to establish the nursery/preschool business as a Social Enterprise.

Once you have seen the preschool, Community Centre and the Agar Nook Estate and are still interested in running Little Kangaroos, then please send us an Expression of Interest; a brief outline of what you have to offer and how you would like to deliver a nursery/ preschool from this setting. If we like what we read, we will ask you to deliver a presentation and discuss things further.

The District Council has to make its own response to the Fire Cuts.

Labour Planning Lead John Legrys believes the Council should tell the Combined Fire Authority that plans for housing and economic growth to 2031 make it inappropriate to downgrade or reduce services from Coalville & Ashby and any other Fire and Rescue Station serving North West Leicestershire Communities.

Bonfire Night is the busiest night of the year for our emergency services. Fire Officers tell us the majority of accidents happen at private parties and that organised displays are safer.

The Labour Group have called for a debate at the next Council meeting. You can come and support them at the Council Offices, Tuesday 17th November at 6.30pm.

Losing the Snibston Firework event may have made this Bonfire Night a little more dangerous than last, but next year could be even worse.

Labour elects a new Leader

Do you enjoy a good Bonfire Night? A jolly crowd, a blazing fire, the squeals as exploding fireworks fill the dark evening sky. Coalville families will miss Snibston’s fabulous spectacle this year.

The Fire and Rescue service in Leicestershire is facing the biggest cuts in its history that will see firefighters struggle to do their job effectively and safely.

Extraordinary cuts could see 11 fire engines decommissioned and two fire stations close, with the only replacement for services being Tactical Response Vehicles – which carry less equipment and fewer firefighters.

Graham Vaux, Leicestershire brigade secretary, says it’s likely that firefighters responding to emergencies in these vehicles will not have all the resources they require. The Fire Brigades Union in Leicestershire are calling for the public to make their views known in the consultation currently being undertaken. Have your say at www.leicestershire-fire.gov.uk/ irmp

If these cuts go ahead, the new Coalville Fire Station will lose one of its fire engines. Described by critics as “two men and a bucket”, a Tactical Response Vehicle will arrive at an emergency without all the gear needed to perform a full rescue.

The Labour Group at North West Leicestershire Council are concerned that the Fire Cuts do not take account of the increase in housing, employment and retail planned for our area. There is to be at least 10,700 new homes, an additional 96 hectares of employment land and 7,300 m2 of shops.

The Labour Group at NWLDC has chosen its first ever female Leader.

Sue McKendrick, Councillor for Blackfordby, was elected unanimously by her peers and will be supported by Deputy Labour Group Leader John Legrys, Councillor for Coalville West.

The mid-term election took place after Labour Leader Tom Neilson stepped aside due to promotion in his outside employment. Cllr Neilson will continue to scrutinise the Council’s Finance and Governance.

Cllr Sue McKendrick said “I am honoured to be given the chance to build on Tom Neilson’s leadership. The Labour Group has trusted me and I intend to demonstrate that Labour is the party that speaks up for ordinary people across North West Leicestershire.”

WHAT IS THE WORLD MADE OF? STUDENTS ASK ARISTOTLE Science students at Ibstock Community College dressed up as Greek philosophers to help them get to grips with the history of scientific thinking.

The Year 7 students used beards and togas to act out the beliefs of philosophers including Aristotle, Parmenides and Leucippes.

Another dressed up as 18th century chemist John Dalton.

Greek thinkers first came up with

the idea that the world was made up of tiny particles back in 300 BC. This view was finally confirmed by Dalton in the 18th century.

While one half of the class took on the roles of Greek philosophers, other students examined particles under a microscope to test Dalton's theory.

Teacher Mrs Jess Bennett said: "Because it is such an abstract concept, it is much simpler to understand and more interesting if it is told as a story. And it is not very often that you get to wear beards in a science lesson!

Lessons like this help students to understand and to remember what they have learned - and to have fun while doing it."

T: 01530 417736 E: andrew.bridgen.mp@parliament.uk We are all aware of the spending reductions that Local Authorities have had to make to help contribute to reducing the record deficit bequeathed to us by the previous Labour Government.

It is unfortunate that because of historic funding settlements, Leicestershire started from a bad position, as we were one of the lowest funded local authorities in the Country. For years we have found ourselves bumping along the bottom of the Education, Fire and Police funding league tables.

The County Council has been lobbying MP’s for some time for a fair deal for Leicestershire, and this is a campaign I and my colleagues have taken to the Government.

In spite of what has been alleged by some members of the County Council, we have had some success for example winning a 5% increase in Education funding for every child in Leicestershire, with the assurance from the Chancellor of a fairer funding settlement for our schools to come from Government. However winning extra money for funding areas such as the Fire Service is difficult, when you consider the questionable decisions in the recent past, such as the financing of white elephant projects like the £11 million Leicester Fire Headquarters.

It has always been my argument that local authorities should not have to go through this process of banging at the Chancellor’s door with their begging bowls, but should be allowed to keep the proceeds of local economic growth. At the Conservative Party Conference, George Osborne announced that local authorities will in the future retain their business rates, something I lobbied him on when he visited DHL and Norton in my constituency in recent months.

This was a big announcement, and although the full detail of the policy has yet to be fleshed out, this funding change should be of great benefit to Leicestershire. We already raise almost double the amount in business rates than we get back through the block grant from Central Government.

Although there may be some reallocation with other authorities at the beginning, George Osbourne said in the future, local authorities can keep what they make. As a fast growing economy that will be of great benefit to my constituency and the County as a whole, with numerous planning permissions being sought to develop businesses in the area. The move will mean Local Authorities

will be more incentivised to encourage jobs and growth and will have their destiny in their own hands rather than being dependent on Government.

In order to maintain and grow our economy, we however need to make the right decisions on infrastructure, skills and economic development. There is a great commitment to the Northern Powerhouse under this Government and together with the might of the London Economy, it is essential that the East Midlands through the Midlands Engine is able to compete. It is a little known fact but the East Midlands has a higher proportion of our GDP created through manufacturing industry than any other region. This is something we need to build on. The Government is currently negotiating a process of devolving power to Combined Authorities, and our neighbours in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire are bidding together for a range of new powers including major transport projects, back to work projects and some health matters. I want Leicestershire to be part of this bid and have written to the County Council urging engagement with the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire bid. The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has stated to me that he agrees with the promotion of an East Midlands equivalent of the Northern Powerhouse. Working with our neighbouring Councils will mean a far better chance of getting significant powers from Central Government and it is my hope that our Leicestershire Councils can deliver on this.

On local issues, the draft North West Leicestershire District Council local plan is now out for consultation, and I would urge residents to register their views on this. The Council does need to allocate land for future housing need and is consulting on the land allocation areas and type of housing needed. The Consultation responses are being collected at www.nwleics.gov.uk/ localplanmysay until Monday 30 November 2015.

November promises to be a busy month with the annual Remembrance Parades. For the first time since I became an MP, I will be attending the Service in Ashby this year as I am keen to support as many Remembrance events across the constituency during this Parliamentary term.

My wreath in Coalville will be presented by Cllr John Cotterill in my place.
