Highcliffe Amateur Theatrical Society (Hats) Spring Play: “Allo Allo” May 19th, 20th, & 21st - Wow

Andrew Bridgen Mp Visits Charity ‘Once We Were Soldiers’ At The Springboard Centre, Coalville Local MP, Andrew Bridgen visited the Springboard Centre in Coalville to meet with the main charity officers of ‘Once We Were Soldiers’. The charity officially opened in North West Leicestershire on the 9th March 2016, the MP visited a month on to see their progress.

How time flies. It doesn’t seem 5 minutes since we were advertising and rehearsing Alice in Wonderland, our Panto 2015.

It was a well attended production with fantastic audience feedback.

Here we are already in full swing with rehearsals for “Allo Allo” our Spring Play. This is produced by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd, by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft.

This year HATS will be celebrating our 25th anniversary.

Now that’s what you call an achievement. And amazingly we still have a few of the original members. Unfortunately as we are a not for profit group our funds will not stretch to award them with the standard “Carriage clock”. I am afraid they will have to be content with the coffee and biscuits provided in rehearsals.

All together now, boo, hiss or clap, whatever you feel about our meagre acknowledgement to them.

Once We Were Soldiers was set up to support Britain’s homeless veterans. The charity was founded in March 2013 by Army Veteran Andy Spiers along with his partner Nicky Townsend. After struggling to adjust to civilian life and Andy’s continued battle against mental health problems, Andy and Nicky knew all to well what challenges veterans face upon leaving the Armed Forces and what negative impact this has on not just the veterans but their families too

The Archery Big Weekend Is Taking Place Near You Over 4th & 5th June 2016 Over the last four years, the ‘Big Weekend’ has successfully introduced thousands of people to the great sport of Archery. This year Kirby Muxloe Archery Club (KMAC) will be opening its doors and welcoming members of the public to come along and try archery. So, if you are a budding Robin Hood, Katniss Everdeen, Hawkeye or Merida this is your chance to give your bow hand a try at archery.

Lizzie has been a member of KMAC since she was 8yrs old and we are all extremely proud of her achievements.

Some of you may have been following the triumphs of Glenfield’s local archer Lizzie Warner, who won silver at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2015 and is current U16 National champion and UK record holder.

Archery is one of the few sports that is truly inclusive to everyone, as all ages and abilities/disabilities can participate. At KMAC the age range of our members is from 9 to 78 years young and, as we recognise that people shoot for

The Big Weekend will be Saturday 4 June and Sunday 5 June from 1045hrs to 1600hrs at Kirby Muxloe Sports and Village Club, Ratby Lane, Kirby Muxloe. Those of you who are age 9 and up will be able to have a go at archery, shooting at various targets, you may even win a prize!

There will be a variety of other activities taking place on the day, so even those that do not fancy picking up a bow and arrow, you are more than welcome to

Grace Dieu - Record Number Of Scholarship Awards

Kats Antiques Stars In Celebrity Antiques Road Trip

It has been a tremendously successful year at Grace Dieu Manor School. A record-breaking 16 pupils have been awarded Scholarships to top senior schools including Ratcliffe College, Denstone College, Dixie Grammar School, Foremarke, Loughborough Endowed Schools, King Edward’s School (Birmingham), Repton School, Trent College, Uppingham School.

We had a fantastic day on Friday 22nd April filming for the next series of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. All the staff and crew are lovely ,we had loads of fun with the celebrity guests Jimmy Osmond and Tony Christie and also the antique experts Catherine Southon & Margie Cooper. Thank you for inviting us to be on the show.

The Scholarships were awarded for a number of different specialisms including Academic, All Rounder, ICT, Sport, Drama and Music. These coveted awards are a reflection of the hard work and dedication pupils have towards all aspects of their education at Grace Dieu. Alex’s Wish Wins Not-For-Profit Business Award Last night saw Alex’s Wish, the Rothley based charity who fundraise to research and find treatments and – ultimately – a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, win a prestigious local business award.

Emma Hallam, the charity’s founder and Director, said, “We were shortlisted for the Leicester Mercury Business Awards in the Not-For-Profit Organisation award category and faced some very stiff competition. We were up against Rainbows and the Matt Hampson Foundation, both charities that we really respect and look up to. To hear last night that we had won was absolutely amazing. I’m still on cloud nine.”

A local council is gauging interest in how many residents would like to take control and build their own new homes in the district.

The Government has announced it wants to enable more people to build or commission their own home. North West Leicestershire District Council is asking interested residents of the district to register their interest so it can get a good idea on numbers and how it could work to accommodate this. Residents can register online .

Self builds are projects where the person directly organises

the design and construction of their new home. This can be anything from a ‘DIY self-build’, where the resident is responsible for everything from design to construction, to a resident who arranges for an architect or contractor to build their home for them.

By signing up and registering an interest potential self-builders will help the council in finding out more about the demand for custom builds in the district, where people want to build and they type of house they’re thinking of.

Girls Are Badminton Champions

Four girls from Ibstock Community College have been crowned champions in the Leicestershire county badminton finals.

The girls had earlier won the north west Leicestershire league to earn a place in the county final at Babington College.

Sisters Isobel and Evie Pike and team mates Niamh Eliott and Katy Evans played for more than three hours to secure the win. All the girls are aged 13 except for Evie, who is 11.

PE teacher Richard Pilcher said “The final was a real nail-biter – it came down to one point! The girls did incredibly well; I am so proud of them all.”

Woodward Takes First Place At Stilton 7

It was a busy weekend for Hermitage Harriers with athletes representing the club at three different events: the English National Cross Country Championships at Donington Park, the Belvoir Challenge and Stilton 7, the second race in the Leicestershire Road Racing League Winter Series.

The English National Cross Country Championships, on Saturday afternoon, got underway with the ladies race in which Katie Wright did the club extremely proud by scooping 514th place out of 700 runners with her respectable time of 45:58 over the 8k course.

Next up, it was the turn of the men to tackle their 12k course.

Eight Harriers were included in the 1700 male athletes that crossed the start line. First home for the club was Matt Adcock in 351st place with a competitive time of 51:05. Teammate Darren Weston was second Harrier home claiming 752nd place overall to finish in 57:04. The next two finishers for the club crossed the line within a minute of each other.

Neil Doherty and David Pallett finished with times of 1:00:15 and 1:00:53 respectively. Next to complete the race was Adam Green with his time of 1:03:31.

Ben Neale was sixth Harrier home with a time of 1:09:59.

Kevin Borley and Eddie Byrne completed the eight man team

with times of 1:20:41 and 1:22:00 respectively. Men’s captain Jason Williams was delighted with the team’s performance, saying “they did themselves, as well as their club, proud. It was a tough course and the wind blew all day but everyone was brilliant!”

Meanwhile, six Harriers took to the beautiful countryside as part of the Belvoir Challenge. Trevor Hope, Sarah Maynard and Claire Kind tackled the 15 mile run which took them through the Vale of Belvoir and several well stocked cake stops. All three thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and all finished in just over four hours.

Sarah Maynard was first to cross the line in 4:05:45. Just under a minute later she was joined by Claire Kind who clocked a time of 4:06:40. The trio was completed

by Trevor Hope with his time of 4:08:50. Darren Wilson, Dave Kind and Zoe Sewter all opted for the 26 mile run which also offered stunning countryside views and regular cake stops for refuelling.

The cake clearly worked well for Darren Wilson, who flew around the course in an impressive time of 3:41:52 and claimed 21st place overall. Teammates Dave Kind and Zoe Sewter completed the course with less than a minute between them; Kind finished the challenge in 4:42:17 and Sewter in 4:43:04 and earned themselves positions which were just outside the top 100. Sewter said it was “a fabulous way to spend a Saturday!”

Sunday morning saw the second fixture in the LRRL winter league, Stilton 7, get underway. Thirty three Harriers crossed the start line to compete in the two lap race.

Tony Woodward was first home for the club and claimed his first ever LRRL win after storming past Mark Powell of Leicester Coritanians in the last mile. His time of 37:07 secured him not only the win but a 7 mile personal best too! The next two Harriers finished just 15 seconds apart. Michael Trott and Matt Adcock clocked up times of 39:19 and 39:34 respectively and their 4th and 6th place gave Hermitage three men inside the top ten. James Willoughby was next to count for the men’s A team, scooping his highest ever LRRL finishing place in 16th and a new PB of 41:03. Just outside the top twenty finishers, came Shaun Coulton and Paul Gregory in 21st and 22nd place respectively to claim another two spots in the A team. Coulton’s time of 41:35 also gave him a new club record in the vet50 category. The final two places in the men’s A team went to Fraser Harris and Darren Weston with their times of 42:03 and 42:39. Overall, the club had seven men inside the top 30 finishers – a huge achievement for the club who are going from strength to strength!

The ladies teams did not disappoint either, with Bonita Robinson flying around the

course to finish as first lady for the club with her time of 49:01 which gave her 8th position overall. She was quickly joined by teammate Louise Mason who ran an impressive 49:43 and claimed the position of 4th veteran lady.

The ladies A team was completed

by Hannah Wheeler who finished in 26th position with her time of 53:08 and Lesley Wilkins in 54:16 and 33rd position.

The club also fielded a ladies B team which was made up of four ladies including Katie Gibbins, who completed the course in 57:21 and claimed 63rd place overall, and Charlotte Pollard with her time of 1:06:39 and 120th position. Teresa Bradshaw (125th) and Penny Wellard (133rd) completed the B team with times of 1:07:54 and 1:09:25 respectively.

As always, there were many success stories club-wide. Darryl Johnson continued his PB streak with a new 7 mile personal best time of 1:00:08. A number of club members took on the race distance of 7 miles for the first time too including Rob Wells, Fraser Harris, Teresa Bradshaw, Penny Wellard and Lisa Emery.

Hermitage also introduced two new club runners at the event.

Michael Trott and David Holmes both raced in the club’s silver vest for the first time at the fixture.

Growing In The Veg Patch

Although the mornings are still a little chilly, the sun is with us longer each day and the temperature is finally warming up, so my mind is turning to my kitchen garden aka the veg patch at the bottom of my garden. I’ve loved growing my own fruit and vegetables since a spent time in the family garden with my Dad as a child. I liked nothing more than spending the day in the garden raising seedlings and watching them grow.

It’s no surprise then that when I’m not designing gardens or offering advice to clients I’m busy tending my own garden – it’s 24/7 for me!

With my heated propagator set up in the greenhouse it is now stuffed with pots and trays with seed and seedlings at various stages.

The first thing I sow in February is my Chilli and Pepper seeds, although I didn’t have much success this year and I think they didn’t have enough heat early on. Still, my Tomatoes have germinated well. This year I’ve sown ‘Sungold’ and ‘Cuor de Bue’ which are my favourites.

The first provides masses of delicious sweet/sour orange fruit throughout the summer and the later bares huge fist sized pink-red fruit great for slicing and roasting for soups, stews and curries. Once they are large

I’ve had varying success germinating Cucumbers and Melons over the years so now i buy small plants to grow on which will join the Tomatoes in the warmth of the greenhouse. I’m trying some fast growing Broccoli in there too this year. 40 day ‘Raabi’ promises tender flower stalks, stems and leaves in no time so I’m squeezing in a crop before the tomatoes take their place.

For the outdoor veg patch I’m raising, Chinese Broccoli, summer Purple Sprouting and the traditional spring cropping Purple Spouting too – I love my broccoli as you can tell! There’ll be Courgettes in green and yellow too and Squashes to store like ‘Sweet Dumpling’ and ‘Honey Bear’ perfect for roasting with chilli in the winter months.

No veg patch is complete without beans and mine is no exception. I love French beans and this year I’ll be growing the climbing variety ‘Cobra’ as I find that dwarf varieties tend to get muddy. produces long tender beans with great flavour. I sow these in early May so that they are ready to be planted out when the frosts have passed later in the month.

I love being able to pop into the garden to pick salad, so I’ll be sowing lots as per usual, including loose leaf, butterhead lettuce and endive varieties to give a variety of leaf shapes, colours and textures. Rocket grows well although it can bolt quickly as the summer arrives. I find an early sowing direct into the soil at this time of year does well. Annual herbs are a must for me too, so Basil and coriander will be sown and grown in the comfort of the greenhouse.

I like to try something new each year, so I’ve sown Florence Fennel and some sugar snap peas in the greenhouse and once they are strong enough they will be planted outside to fill out ready for a delicious harvest in midsummer. I’m looking forward to a tasty summer!

Next month I’ll be looking at what is available in the garden centres to provide a seasonal splash of colour for summer.

Liberals Stand Up For Local People That’s Why I’m For Leave On June 23rd, we have an excellent opportunity – an opportunity to bring power and control back to our country and our communities.

As a councillor I do my best to stand up for local people and local issues, from fighting the cuts to Leicestershire’s Fire Service to representing residents’ concerns against unpopular housing developments. It can be difficult enough to get the voices of people like you and me heard in the county and in the country, let alone in an undemocratic union which stretches across four million kilometres and 508 million people.

EU trade policies also add unfair tariffs onto goods from outside: free trade has long been one of the best ways to encourage peace and prosperity across the world but it is restricted to Europe, and both the British economy and the economies of less developed nations are damaged by EU regulation. Leicester’s Golden Mile is famed for its curry houses and Indian shops but the policies of the European Union mean trading with India is harder than it needs to be and talented Indian chefs will struggle to migrate to work here when unqualified European citizens can settle here easily.

Politicians in Brussels are completely removed from the areas they have so much control over. As a Liberal Democrat, I believe power should be held as close to individuals and communities as possible, and that those with power should be held accountable. In the European Union, however, important decisions are made behind closed doors - laws which affect us all are written by unelected officials in the Commission and the Council of Ministers operates almost entirely in secrecy. Gradually power is transferred away from our country into the hands of bureaucrats from across the continent, and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) has demonstrated how concealed agreements concerned primarily with the interests of large multinational companies are pushed through despite public concerns. Increasing numbers of Europeans are using their vote to show dissatisfaction with the EU, but changes have been slow (when they have happened) and the elites at the top refuse to offer any substantial reform.

The ‘Remain’ campaign like to argue that we do not know what Britain will be like if we leave – but they can’t know how our country will look after another few years of control from Brussels bureaucrats either. There is one certainty in this referendum, however: remain in the European Union and we remain under the rule of an undemocratic and illiberal institution, vote leave and we return control to the British people. Of course, there’s much that needs to be improved with our own government, but I believe that the people best suited to rule this country are the people who live here. That’s why, on June 23rd, I’ll be voting to leave the European Union.

One of the more disappointing aspects of the referendum campaign so far has been the scaremongering and outlandish claims that have recently made the headlines. The many people to whom I have spoken on this issue want to make their decisions based on facts. There is a lot of talk at present about the Remain campaign employing ‘project fear’ and I think you have to ask yourself the question, if our membership of the EU is such a positive and is beneficial to the Country, why does the Remain campaign consist of nothing more than scare stories at present?

History is repeating itself in local government as well. Tory controlled Devon County Council is asking for parish volunteers to fill in the potholes on rural roads, just as they might have done in the 17th Century.

The National Government is cutting the money that comes to local communities from general taxation. Rather than expecting the rich to extract their wealth from Panama, the Tories have decided it is up to ordinary people to help themselves. By 2018 funding for Leicestershire’s libraries, heritage and learning services will reduce by over 30%.

The “Show Must Go On”, say the volunteers who are now booking acts well into 2018. National comedians are queueing up to play in what is probably the quirkiest theatre venue in the country. Where else can you play to 200 people in a folding theatre? Surely the audience will be creased?

Century Theatre-goers in April were treated to a scamper through the history of music by minstrels to English Heritage “Blast from the Past”. After the medieval humour, bawdy Renaissance songs accompanied by a variety of early instruments including a crumhorn and harpsichord, the musicians made a plea to the audience:

Take for instance the recent scare stories about withdrawal from the EU. We are told that each household will be £4300 worse off if we leave. That’s the headline but the detail highlights how disingenuous the Remain campaign are being. The figure is based on what the Treasury forecasts GDP will be in 2030, something is has difficulty doing on even an annual basis, and uses the number of households now and not the projected figure for 2030. In addition, GDP per household is a meaningless figure since it does not accurately reflect households’ spending power or living standards. It also relies on net annual immigration of 185,000 which I believe is an unsustainable number.

Leicestershire’s new approach to self-help and community support is laid out in a strategy document that really is entitled “Providing Less, Supporting More”.

Leicestershire County Council tell us:

“Don’t let this place close,” they said. “We travel all round the country, from Perth to Penzance.

This is our favourite venue. It is so special. Please, when you go home, tell at least one other person about this place and make them come and support it”.

“Working together with communities, local councils, businesses and other partners, we will shape our services to target those most in need, particularly children, families and older people. Our partners will include cultural, health, tourism, social care and learning providers.

Most importantly we will seek to strengthen our relationship with local communities so that they play a central role in shaping and providing services in the future.”

Tucked away, off the Ashby Road, hidden behind the Harris fencing that defends the destruction of Snibston Museum from prying eyes and photo-journalists, the Century Theatre is still the liveliest for miles around.

The impact of our membership of the EU is being clearly illustrated through the problems facing the UK Steel industry. The reason the industry is in so much trouble is that the Chinese are dumping state subsidised steel into the EU, at prices the UK cannot compete with. The USA can see what is happening and imposed a 236% tariff on Chinese steel last year.

The 28 EU States however cannot agree a response, bearing in mind that some EU Countries have little or no Steel industry, and are happy to buy cheap Chinese steel.

Michael Gove has recently set out a vision for the No campaign whereby Britain would be able to trade in the European Free Trade Zone that stretches from Iceland to Turkey. This would mean that the UK is not subject to the burden of EU law and would not have to accept EU rules on freedom of movement where citizens from the 27 other countries, with more set to join, can freely move to live and work in the UK.
