WELCOME TO YOUR JUNE COMMUNITY EYE MAGAZINE It’s hard to believe spring is here as it seems to have arrived very suddenly, however it’s very welcome and I’m enjoying seeing the Bluebells start to flower as they have to be my favourite flower of all. Maybe it’s because my mother was walking in the Bluebells in Loughborough’s Outwoods just before I was born.

Bel has a lovely spring article and it’s certainly inspired me to go and visit my local garden centre and have a look at the amazing array of plants for to encourage wildlife into my garden.

Once the garden is looking neat and beautiful it’s time to tackle the spring clean inside. This month we’ve some handy tips for getting your house sparkling clean without having to go out and buy expensive cleaning products.

The Show’s Committee Members have been working very hard to ensure that this year’s show has new things to offer as well as the usual family favourites.

The Shepshed Show is a fun filled day out with so much to do, all at affordable prices. The event is generously sponsored by local businesses that support the day, enabling the committee to offer so much without having to charge large entrance fees.

This year’s star attraction is the UK’s Top Ranked Freestyle Motocross Team – Broke FMX sponsored by Farmer and Carlisle of Loughborough. The show features stunt riders incorporating the latest heart stopping tricks usually only seen on TV. We will again have a Beer Tent run by The Horse and a 1940’s Tea Tent run by Passion.

In addition children will love the Ark Farm – a Petting Farm and Mr Whoops a well known Children’s Entertainer. The Craft Marquee, sponsored by Fred Sherwood (Shepshed) Ltd will be filled with local crafters and artists, and includes a Caricaturist for the first time. Parents will be pleased to see The Stay and Play, run by The Oak Treehouse and sponsored by BOAL UK Ltd, which will provide a safe haven for infants.

The sponsor of The National Forest Wood Fair has launched a drawing competition for schools within The National Forest catchment area in a bid to get them more involved in the event this August Bank Holiday.

Sunset Boulevard is a huge hit with fans of classic cinema thanks to Billy Wilder's memorable 1950s film starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden.

COALVILLE SUMMERFEST 27th JUNE It’s just five weeks to the next event organised by Coalville Town Team. On Saturday, 27 June, the Belvoir Precinct will become home to the Coalville SummerFest, featuring a food and drink festival with music and dancing provided by local schools and amateur groups.

Coalville has been undergoing some serious work in recent months, as evidenced by the demolition of buildings around the centre. We know that the SummerFest will bring crowds back to the town centre for what promises to be a real fun family day out.

Entertainment will take place right in the middle of the Belvoir Precinct, on a raised stage so that parents and grandparents can enjoy watching and listening to their children as they perform for us. For the children, we have arranged for Elsa from Frozen to serve sweets and for the everpopular tea cup ride to be on site.

The Town Team have listened to the feedback from the public at previous events, and have focussed on the type of event the public suggested. So, we will have plenty of food and drink stalls – with food to eat there and then and goodies to buy and take home. We have two local breweries bringing specialist beers along to enjoy by the glass or the bottle.

Everything this year is contained within the boundaries of the Belvoir Precinct, removing the need to walk around the town and the chance of missing some of the attractions. Parking is provided free of charge once again at Snibston Discovery Park – and the train will shuttle people to and from the event. Saturday, 27 June is going to be a great day out for all the family in Coalville.

hat was the question posed in the February edition about the 1944 Souvenir issued by The Anstey War Service League and it evoked numerous responses from Anstey’s senior citizens.

Sylvia Wain tells us that her father Lenard, the founder of the Suburban Press in Albion Road, put forward this idea to the League and with their grateful approval generously produced, at his own cost and using his rationed paper allocation, a copy for every one of the 500 on active service plus a further 600 copies to be sold to raise funds for the League. A copy from Sylvia that had been donated to The Anstey Millennium Collection is shown herewith signed by the committee - President - Herbert Booth, Chairman - J. A. Bramley, Hon. Sec. J. P. Willett, Ass’t Sec. Arch Bosworth, Treasurer J. A. Crooks and Editor J. W. Wakefield.

90 year old ex Serviceman Derek Ross who served in the Fleet Air Arm has also responded saying that he has still got a copy of the souvenir in mint condition together with several other League newsletters that had been enclosed with gift postal orders ranging from five shillings to £1 in value. Music in Leicester Review of the OBS Final – Original Band

Showcase is not a popularity contest. Organisers of the events would be the first to say that.

me – they write very listenable songs, they are one of Leicester’s foremost performance bands and they have one of the best lead singers in the business.

Having said that, BTL had a very noticeable and sizeable presence at tonight’s show, as could be seen from the very large number of people sporting BTL t-shirts and badges, not forgetting the large coach that has brought the band’s contingent of fans over from Coalville and surrounding area. As to the criteria used by the judges tonight, we can only guess.

Some thought, by the end of their set, they were in with a chance of winning, simply because they had all the assets of a great band.

Well, we now know that not to be the case. The only thing of which anyone can be certain – about OBS – is that it is full of surprises.

Winners or not, BTL is a band that a great many people will want to see again.

It is possible to gauge the popularity of bands by the density of people gathered in front of the stage – something that tends to vary from act to act. Tonight, Beneath The Lights opened with one of their best songs, one that makes this band stand out and they had their fans clapping away with their hands in the air; this is a band that ticks all the boxes for

evening saw a welcomed return of Beneath The Lights who delivered a resounding high energy set from start to finish!

Always a crowd pleaser these guys have the likeability factor both onstage and off as well as a great back catalogue of exceptionally good songs.

GRACE DIEU GIRLS VICTORIOUS IN 3M COMPETITION

GRACE DIEU VICTORIOUS AT UPPINGHAM UNDER 11 CRICKET TOURNAMENT On May 20th Grace Dieu retained the prestigious Uppingham Plate.

Eight teams, from as far apart as Kent and Yorkshire, took part in a closely fought tournament. The Grace Dieu boys, captained by Jacob Storey, played superbly well. They successfully beat

GRACE DIEU PUPILS RAISE MONEY FOR NEPALESE EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS Year 8 Pupils staged an overnight row in the School Sports Hall to raise funds for the Earthquake Victims of Nepal.

They organised a rowing rota to ensure that the rowing machines were in constant use. Their efforts were amazing and they rowed 205 KM – 23 times the height of Mount Everest!

The whole School met for School Assembly on Friday morning to hear about their overnight efforts.

The guest speaker at the assembly was Mr Neupane, a Nepalese gentleman, who was born and raised in Gurka where the centre of the second Earthquake to hit Nepal within a month struck.

He spoke passionately to the children about the effects on the earthquake in Nepal and showed pictures of the destroyed

Witham Hall School from Lincolnshire in the Semi-final and The Perse School from Cambridge in the final of the Plate Competition.

In an exciting final Grace Dieu bowled and fielded superbly to restrict The Perse School to 35 all out; a total Grace Dieu surpassed in just 5 overs. Congratulations to Matthew Lo for being the overall highest wicket taker in the tournament. Well played!

He personally lost 2 family members and many friends in the disaster.

The Year Eight pupils were weary after their efforts but are very pleased to announce that they have raised a substantial amount to help the victims of the disaster.

Mr Fisher, Headmaster, commented “What the children achieved last night, and the manner in which they set to the task was outstanding. I am immensely proud of them all and all they achieved.”

3M challenged local primary and secondary school pupils to create their own healthy drink or snack in this year’s Super Food category of the Young Innovators Challenge.

The Super Food category is one of five challenges from 3M, each involving a different area of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) curriculum.

Entrants had to consider the scientific processes involved in the production of their snack or drink – such as fermentation or emulsification – as well as the nutritional content and the consumer market to target. They had to invent a product name and packaging, the programme

is designed to develop creativity, team working, confidence and presentation skills.

The ‘Cheese Jacks’ team from Grace Dieu, mentored by Mrs McDermott won the Super Food category with their tasty and healthy snack.

They were the youngest finalists and against some tough competition. Nicky Morgan, Education Minister, presented each of them with their prize, a £50 Amazon voucher each and £1000 for the School to spend on Home Economics equipment. The girls were all thrilled with their achievement at the prestigious awards ceremony.

WINDERMERE AND WEST END 8 FOR HERMITAGE HARRIERS It’s been another busy week for the Hermitage Harriers this week with three separate events taking place.

The impact of tourism was one of the main focuses when students from Ibstock Community College visited Castleton on a Year 8 geography trip.

Thirty five students visited the Derbyshire beauty spot to look at issues including economic activity, geographical features, and primary and secondary industries.

ASHFIELD DONATES £8,500 FOR IBSTOCK CUTTER Ashby-based firm Ashfield Healthcare’s Worthy Causes Fund has donated £8,500 towards the cost of a new laser cutter at Ibstock Community College, following a presentation by students.

Four students - Lawrence Standen, Reagan Smith, both aged 13, Katherine Bowman and Haidee Dodd, aged 12 - were invited to give a presentation at the company’s Ashby HQ, after the college approached local businesses for help to buy the laser cutter.

Ashfield offered to put £8,500 towards the £10,000 cutter, after listening to the students’ pitch. The college has already raised £1,500 by holding its own fundraising events.

Design Technology teacher Rob Shephard, who spearheaded the campaign for a laser cutter, said “The cutter is going to make a

The laser cutter, which should be up and running by next term, will be used for a wide range of design and engineering projects. Students will design their products using Computer Aided Design before pressing a button to activate the cutter, which will immediately cut out the pieces for their 3D designs.

Lisa Wiggins, Chair of the Ashfield Worthy Causes Committee, said “We are delighted to be able to provide funding to Ibstock Community College towards the cost of a laser cutter. We hope that the equipment will enhance the learning experiences of current and future students of the college.”

The first event to ‘kick-off’ was the Brathay 10 in 10. Caroline and Craig Johnson headed north to Windermere to face the ultimate running challenge – 10 marathons in 10 consecutive days. It was not Craig’s first time completing the 10 in 10, he took part in the event in 2013 but this time his new bride, Caroline, joined him in facing the marathon challenge.

Despite the inevitable wear and tear on their bodies and Caroline being plagued by nausea, they both crossed the finish line for the final time on Sunday afternoon.

They celebrated their success in traditional hard-core fashion – with a dip in the icy cold Windermere Lake. Craig’s best marathon time over the 10 days was 4 hours, 25 minutes and 16 seconds with Caroline’s best being an impressive 5.07.38.

The couple were joined by some fellow club members for the final day including two marathon first timers: Zoe Sewter and Rob Wells.

Rob had jokingly told teammate Craig that if he ever competed in the 10 in 10 again he would join him for the final marathon.

So, when Craig signed up for the challenge again, Rob got training.

After months of training, Rob laced his running shoes up for his big day and ran an outstanding race to finish in 5 hours, 2 minutes and 32 seconds. Harrier Zoe Sewter also chose this challenging but beautiful course as her marathon debut and flew around the scenic route in a fantastic time of 3.45.58. The first-timers were joined by experienced marathoner James Willoughby who ran his sixth marathon and finished in 11th place with a time of 2.57.32.

Whilst the marathoners were sampling some off the best hills the Lake District had to offer, 31 Harriers were taking in the Leicestershire countryside as they competed in the final fixture of the LRRL Winter Road Racing League.

The ladies team finished strongly, securing both an A and B team at the event. The A team consisted of Bonita Robinson, Mia Weston, Katie Wright and Hannah Wheeler.

Robinson flew around the 8 mile route to finish as 12th lady in 56 minutes and 50 seconds.

Teammate Mia Weston also snuck in with a finishing time of under an hour with her time of 59.55. The team was completed

by Katie Wright who finished in 44th position with a time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 13 seconds and Hannah Wheeler in 45th place with her time of 1.02.05.

For the second league race in a row, the Harriers fielded enough ladies to secure a B team too!

Katie Wheeler (1.04.06), Sarah Kendrick (1.07.04), Judith Brand (1.10.28) and Jodi Nicholson (1.12.23) all ran exceptionally well and put the club in a very strong position.

As always, the men’s team were on top form with three of the club’s athletes finishing inside the top five and eight men inside the top 45 finishers. Matt Adcock claimed 2nd place with his time of 44.30. Teammate Tony Woodward wasn’t far behind him and raced over the mat in 44.55, giving him a new five minute PB and 3rd place overall. Gavin McDermott put in an outstanding performance to finish in 5th place with a new 8 mile PB of 45.52 and claimed 1st place in the vet40 category. The trio were joined shortly afterwards

by Paul Gregory who ran a fantastic time of 47.20 and Darren Weston who clocked 48.01 – smashing his predicted time by a minute and a half. Shaun Coulton and Joe Henson were next home for the Harriers with times of 48.11 and 48.45 respectively. Pete Armstrong completed the team after he delivered an 8 minute personal best with his new time of 49.13.

Club athletes celebrated many successes during the race outside of the official team places. Darryl Johnson set yet another PB, taking almost 5 minutes off his previous best with a time of 1.06.27. Judith Brand and Jodi Nicholson both took around a 3 minute chunk of their former times to set new PBs of 1.10.28 and 1.12.23 respectively. The club welcomed back three members from injury: Matthew Dumelow, Tracey Hegarty and club coach Mark Perry. All three runners were happy with their performances on the day – especially Dumelow who set a new 8 mile personal best! Caroline Townsend was on top form and ran the race almost exactly to her predicted time.

Creating Wildlife Gardens

A

garden isn’t a garden without wildlife. We rely on them for pollination, pest control, providing a food source for other creatures and as a bonus they add colour, movement and sound to our outdoor spaces too. So if we can incorporate wildlife friendly features and plants into our gardens we will all benefit hugely.

I’m busy working on a design plan for a wildlife garden at the moment, including features and planting to encourage wildlife to frequent the garden. So what are the essentials for this type of garden?

Bug boxes are made up of materials like bamboo canes, sticks and cones to provide nooks and crannies as snug, safe places for insects to hibernate. They are especially good our natural pest exterminators - lacewings and ladybirds. Solitary bees also hibernate in the hollow tubes of the bamboo. Bug boxes are available to buy easily or they can be made simply from scraps of wood and garden twigs.

Ponds are great habitats for Frogs, toads and newts. Damselflies, dragonflies, pond skaters, snails and water beetles all breed in water and for those with space for a large pond, they may even see swallows and house martins gathering insects from the water surface and using muddy areas for nest building.

Hedgehog habitats like piles of logs & leaves, a compost heap or space beneath a shed will provide shelter and space for nesting or hibernating hogs.

Encouraging them into your garden will help with pest control as they love to munch on slugs, beetles and caterpillars. I love to hear them snuffling around on a summers evening.

Ponds can be large or small; it’s possible to convert decorative pots, old sinks, troughs and even old baths into a pond once the drainage holes have been sealed.

Pots with a minimum water depth of 20-30cm (8-12in) will allow a few plants to be added.

Log Piles made up of a mixture of logs and twigs from various plants they provide homes for creepy crawlies and a food source for plenty of wildlife. Simulating a natural woodland floor, they’re best placed in a shady spot, so that it remains cool and damp.

For larger spaces natural style ponds can be created with shallow sides to allow frogs easy access & to allow birds to drink safely. Aim for some foliage around the edges for wildlife to shelter and to encourage greater

Plants which are nectar and seed rich will attract a wealth of bees, butterflies, insects and birds throughout the year. Daisies like Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Leucanthemum, act as landing pads for bees and butterflies,

drawing them in to gather nectar and pollinate the blooms. Thistlelike perennials like Eryngium, Echinops and Teasels offer a valuable food source for birds in the autumn-winter months. Native wildflowers will bring a whole host of wildlife into the garden. Choose those which are not invasive like Wild Primrose and Violets which flower in early spring when there is little else about.

Berrying & fruiting shrubs and trees like Rowan, Pyracantha and Crab Apple offer an easy food source for birds and insects from late summer onwards. Leave fallen fruit for insects, decomposing bacteria and fungi to scavenge from in the autumn-winter.

Bird Feeders are essential if you want to attract more birds to the garden. There’s a huge range of bird food to choose from to attract finches, Tits, Sparrows & Robins.

Ensure they are kept clean to keep the birds healthy and regularly top them up to keep a steady stream of feathered friends calling.

I

wish to begin by thanking all of those who took part in the General Election a few weeks ago, for our democracy to thrive people have to participate not just spectate. I would like to especially thank the 25,505 people who voted for me to remain the Member of Parliament for our constituency. I was proud and heartened that both my vote, and my majority have increased since the last election in 2010, and I can promise you all that I will continue to do my very best to serve ALL the residents of North West Leicestershire and build on our achievements of the past 5 years.

The last Parliamentary term was necessarily about recovery.

Thanks to our actions and tough decisions, unemployment has fallen drastically, the deficit has halved and is on a downward trajectory, and our economic growth rate is amongst the fastest in the developed world. The next 5 years will continue to focus on the economy however there will be a difference in that we now have a majority Conservative Government.

This means we can fulfil our Manifesto Commitments rather than having to trade them away again in Coalition negotiations.

Ours is a One Nation Manifesto that centres on working people.

We can therefore look forward to legislation that will continue to increase apprenticeship numbers, with further reform of welfare to continue to get a fairer deal for taxpayers and help working parents with childcare with proposals that will see the number of hours of free childcare doubled.

We will also be bringing forward a Bill to hold an EU Referendum.

It think it is interesting that at the ballot box Political parties which did not trust the people to have a vote on our future relationship with the EU, were not ultimately trusted by the electorate themselves.

Locally, I will continue to work to ensure that our economic growth

continues whilst also protecting and improving our public services.

I want to see improvements in our infrastructure and I believe it is high time that our public transport offering in North West Leicestershire was significantly improved. To that end, I will be pressing the Government most strongly to look at the opportunities that can be created by reopening the National Forest Railway Line.

On May 7th a Conservative District Council was also returned with an increased majority and I will be working with the leadership of the Council to build on our local achievements to improve our towns and villages. Specifically this means building on the foundations that have been laid for the regeneration of Coalville, with an increased retail offering in an attractive setting. Continuing to build on the vibrant atmosphere in Ashby which in part is due to the hard work of the Conservative controlled Town Council, and continuing the improvements to our villages and rural communities with measures such as the ongoing broadband rollout. All of this is being done with the promise of no increase on Council Tax during its term in office.

In Parliament I will continue to fight for my constituents both collectively and where necessary individually. In the last Parliament I was able to bring forward legislation to review decriminalisation of non-payment of the TV licence fee which I am hopeful will become law in the near future, as well as fighting successful campaigns such as seeing Air Passenger Duty removed from Children’s flights.

I also fought against the HS2 project and intend to continue undertaking such campaigns during this term in Parliament, in order to fulfil my duty which is to do all I can to improve the lives of my constituents and those of all the people of our great nation.

s local County Councillor for Coalville, I have had a lot of concerns raised about the height of the grass on Highways verges.

If you dislike the aesthetic appearance of our new wildlife verges you have a number of options:-

I have just had a most informative conversation with a responsible officer. The reduction in cutting frequency - as a response to central budget cuts -should be well known. www.leics.gov.uk/ grasscutting

You can be reassured by Highways that Coalville comes after Whitwick in the next cutting cycle and should be done in the next week or so. If you feel sufficiently annoyed and public spirited you can (at your own risk and expense) cut the patch outside your property. Highways tell me they have no problem with that.

This has led to some loss of resilience and it is clear that the ideal standard of a cut every six weeks has not been achieved.

Coalville's last cut was at the end of March. Being some weeks behind at a time of peak grass growth has led to some splendid meadows by the sides of our roads.

Highways are keen to reassure residents that, where the height of the vegetation is compromising road safety, they will come out and attend to it outside the regular cutting cycle. IS THIS DEMOCRACY? Having taken 25 of the 38 seats in the new District Council, the controlling Tory Group have excluded Labour ward members from representing local people on businesses.

The Owen St Football Club is in Snibston South. Forcing a vote, the Tories have blocked Cllr Geary from attending the liaison committee, leaving the people living around the Club, affected by noise and traffic, unrepresented.

By forcing a similar vote, Labour Ward Councillor Nick Clarke has been removed from the Bardon

You can have a chat with your Parish Council. Parishes were offered the option to take over highways grass cutting. If your community wishes to increase the precept and have more frequent cuts, the option may be reopened if enough people ask for it.

As your local Councillor, I wish to stress, I do not make the rules or run the Council. I am here to mediate between residents in my division and the institution.

The residents of the Greenhill ward most affected by the quarry have no District representative to speak up for them.

Thringstone Councillor Dave Everitt is to have no voice at the Grace Dieu Priory Trust and Thringstone House Community Centre. Ibstock East Councillor, Felix Fenning is to have no place on the Ibstock Brick Liaison Committee.

Not one Labour Councillor is to represent the Council on the sixmember Disability Action Group or the eight-member Highways Forum where, proportionally, Labour would normally have expected one or two members.

HIGHWAYS AT A CROSSROADS At 4.30pm on 20th July, the NWL Highways Forum will be discussing the controversial plans to widen Hugglescote Cross Roads. The CrossRoads Action Group (CRAG) will be presenting a petition from local residents.

CRAG have also paid for a professional traffic survey. The data supports their claim that Grange Rd/Ashburton Rd is already being used as an informal 'southern-bypass'. Widening

the junction would only increase though traffic and do nothing to solve the real problems which are due to the lack of improvements to the A511.

The NWL Highway Forum is held in public at the District Council. I encourage local residents to be there to support their town.

ANDREW BRIDGEN MP SIGNS PLEDGE TO BACK BRITISH FARMING The North West Leicestershire MP, Andrew Bridgen welcomed that the British agriculture industry will work with Government on its plan to grow more, buy more and sell more British food at home and abroad, during his discussion with the National Farmers Union (NFU).

NFU President Meurig Raymond said “It is crucial that everyone works together to halt the alarming decline in the nation’s self-sufficiency. This new Government comes to power with a detailed and positive agenda for agriculture. There is a welcome match in areas like investing for growth, securing access to knowledge and technology, enhancing farmers’ ability to tackle animal and plant health, building safe and secure food chains and protecting key environmental assets.”

Andrew Bridgen MP said “I am pleased that our Government has a detailed and positive growth agenda. Our goals for farming are ambitious – we want British farming to grow more, buy more and sell more British food at home and abroad. The NFU and the farming industry share this ambition, to reverse long- term

declines in farming productivity and the nation’s self-sufficiency.”

The discussions highlighted that like the Government, the NFU believes in a science-led approach to policy decisions. For example, access to new biotechnology, GM crops and pesticides will ensure farmers have the tools to produce more food with less impact on the environment.

Likewise, science should also guide the management of animal disease, such as bovine TB. Urgent implementation of the TB Eradication Strategy is a top priority.

We will continue to discuss Europe with the NFU and the need to have an informed discussion based on the value of trade, labour supply requirements, EU and UK regulations and of course CAP.

BETHANY AND FRIENDS DONATE TO CHARITY

The two friends had a laugh about the amount of clothes and trinkets they had and how they hated to throw things away.

Summer had almost arrived and Bethany was emptying her house ready to give it a good clean, one by one she moved everything out into the garden so she could wipe down the walls, mop the floors and polish the windows till they sparkled.

Daniel Dog was walking past on his afternoon stroll when he heard the laughing, “What’s going on here then?” He said “Someone moving house?!”

She hopped out with a basket of hats and scarves then back in again, then she hopped out with a box of baking trays, then back in again. This went on for quite some time! Christie cat had heard the rattling of boxes and popped her head over the wall to find out what was going on. She could barely see Bethany over the huge pile of boxes!

Christie and Bethany explained what was going on and why they were laughing. “You don’t need to throw things you don’t use anymore away, have you considered donating it to charity?”

Bethany was just coming out of the house with another basket of hats when Christie asked her what she was doing.

“I’m emptying my house so I can clean it,” Said Bethany “But I didn’t realise I had so much stuff! I don’t remember buying most of it and I’m sure I haven’t worn half of these hats!”

Christie replied “It’s good to empty rooms out sometimes, I really need to do my house. I always find things I forgot I had or that I don’t use and are just taking up space”.

“I don’t think it will all fit back in!” Joked Bethany. “I’m sure this can’t all me mine!”

Daniel went on to explain that there were many charity shops in the town who needed second hand clothes and trinkets. He explained that they sell them to help raise money for good causes.

Bethany though that this was a brilliant idea and so once she had finished cleaning, Christie and Daniel helped her to sort out what she wanted to keep and what she wanted to donate.

The following day the friends all took Bethany’s donations to the local charity shop who were very happy to receive them.

Bethany felt very happy to have made a difference to others by giving away things she didn’t want any more.

Well done Bethany, giving to charity is a very kind thing to do.

EYES ON THE WORLD Newborn babies can see shapes and light, with close-range focus enabling them to recognise their mother’s face within days. The ability to coordinate both eyes develops throughout the first eight weeks, although a lot of sight-related progress involves simultaneous brain development.

Colours become increasingly distinct during the first few months of life, while a six-month old baby will be gaining depth perception that tracks objects as they move closer or further away from them. Light sensitivity also improves.

By nine months, long-distance vision will be approaching its full potential in preparation for reading and playing. Crawling is invaluable for establishing hand-to-eye coordination, and it’s better than walking in terms of developing visual skills.

MODEL MAKER STILL WANTED In the May Edition of the Carillon Chimes newsletter I asked if anyone could make 1:144 scale models of houses, Rows of terraced houses preferred. They are for a display to commemorate the Zeppelin raid to be held at the Charnwood Museum during January 2015. We already have a 1:144 model Zeppelin and some figures, just need the buildings to give a sense of size.

Absolutely no response! So I am asking again. 1:144 is (I believe) the equivalent to ‘N’ gauge in the model railway world, no model railwayers out there?
