‘A Boy And A Bear In A Boat’ Children’s Play At Coalville Library!

Wondering what to do with the kids this summer? Then join us for ‘A Boy and a Bear in a Boat’, a play based on the book by Dave Shelton. A family theatre production suitable for 5-9 year olds and beyond!

LEAFLET DELIVERY & PRINTING

Thringstone Art Group are busy preparing lovely paintings for their annual art exhibition 20th -29th August. This is held in the Thringstone Community Centre on the Green in the village and helps raise money for this charitable centre, which serves the communities around Thringstone, Whitwick and Swannington. The popular exhibition shows about 200 paintings by local artists, all of which are for sale at very reasonable prices. It is open in the afternoons and evenings every weekday and Saturday and Sunday afternoons including August Bank Holiday Monday. Admission is free.

Coalville Gets Colourful In The Town’s First Fun Run Coalville’s first even fun run is coming and with a splash! A splash of colour that is as the Coalville Colour Run starts seeking runners for the fun filled event on Sunday 18th September.

The run, organised by the local charity Living Without Abuse and supported by North West Leicestershire District Council, is the first of its kind for Coalville and promises to make an impression. The run, which is approximately 5k, starts at Coalville Market and takes in some of the town’s greatest landmarks such as Coalville Town Football Club, Snibston Country Park, the Urban Forest Park and Memorial Square while all the time being splattered in coloured powder paint at various points along the run.

BBC Symphony Orchestra Visit Castle Rock Music Maestros!

Learning to play a musical instrument, read musical notation and play as an orchestra are all tremendous skill to have, which can impact on many areas of the school curriculum as well as develop social and personal skills.

At Castle Rock High School, they not only provide free tuition but also lend instruments and even provide transport home after the lessons. All of this is part of their ‘Music Maestros’ initiative.

Each child has the choice to learn an instrument of either brass, string, woodwind, percussion, guitar or bass guitar. Parents and grandparents are also invited to join in and several of them do. They learn their instrument through musical workshops that take place every Monday after school and are facilitated by specialist peripatetic staff through the Leicestershire Schools Music Service. The year 9 orchestra have the opportunity to work with professional conductor and violinist Richard Laing.

As part of this fantastic initiative, the students have been learning music arrangements created by the BBC Ten Pieces. Led by BBC Learning, BBC Music and the BBC Performing Groups, Ten Pieces is an ambitious initiative for schools, which aims to open up a world of classical music to a generation of children. The Music Maestros orchestra have learnt how to play several of the BBC Ten pieces in their rehearsals and

have also visited the showcase cinema in Leicester to see a film of the BBC Philharmonic orchestra performing a selection of these ten pieces.

New for this year, professional musicians from the BBC Symphony Orchestra are sharing their knowledge and expertise with aspiring young performers as part of BBC Ten Pieces Coaching Scheme. Castle Rock High School applied to be part of this fantastic coaching scheme. The BBC are only working with 10 organisations in the country and most of these are music hubs; we were very proud to be successful, we are one of the very few schools who were chosen for this project, so an amazing achievement.

On 13th June, six musicians from the BBC Symphony Orchestra visited the school, not only to inspire students but also to teach, guide and even perform with the students.

Throughout the day over 140 students worked with the musicians to learn how to play Bizet’s ‘Habanera’ and ‘Toreador Song’ from the Opera ‘Carmen’ as part of a large orchestra.

In addition to this, the Year 9 students created their own composition based on Bernstein’s ‘Mambo’ after an astonishing performance from the BBC musicians. In the evening both the musicians and the students performed their work to over 50 members of the local community.

Castle Rock Music Maestros performed at De Montfort Hall on the 21st June, which was a part of the Leicestershire Music Hub’s Annual Summer Concert Series.

The next General Meeting of Whitwick and District U3A will be held on Friday 15th July when the speaker will be Kath Reynolds. Her talk has the title "Goose Grease and Brown Paper" and promises to be a light-hearted trip down memory lane to pre-NHS days when many folk had to rely on traditional remedies to combat illness. Kath will describe many old-fashioned treatments which depended upon an assortment of familiar items such as honey, salt, onions and mustard, along with others which seem bizarre now.

The U3A is a self-help organisation for retired people where learning and social activities can be enjoyed in a convivial environment. Being non-political and non-religious, everyone is welcome. Whitwick and District U3A is a lively and friendly group with a wide variety of Interest Groups. The General Meeting provides an ideal opportunity to meet existing members.

The REACT project based behind the main MRC building, is based around furniture re-use and is currently in short supply of domestic appliances. All goods are tested and repaired by a qualified engineer and then passed onto local people for a nominal charge. Collection of the items can be arranged.

The funds raised from selling the electrical appliances and re-used furniture are returned to the project to fund training for the long term unemployed.

Lorraine Harrison, Head of Enterprise, Training & Initiatives explained “Electrical appliances are desperately needed by those just setting up home who cannot afford to buy new, we recycle people’s unwanted items to help others and it saves people

having to arrange having the items collected and taken to the tip” Lorraine continued “We are a Coalville based charity which means funds raised from selling these items goes straight back into the community so anyone donating anything to us are genuinely helping local people”.

GARDENS TO VISIT

Calke Abbey

Well June was a month of chaotic weather and rapid growth in the garden! July is the month when I get to sit back and enjoy my own garden at it’s best, full of blooms, lush foliage and abundant fruit.

I also take a break from my busy Garden Design and Consultation business but I always seem to manage to arrange my holidays around gardens – a bus man’s holiday!

Some of my favourites are close by and some further afield but all are worth visiting for inspiration and the opportunity of enjoying the fruits of someone else’s labour.

Calke Abbey is one of my top three favourite gardens. Being only a 10 minute drive from my home I can pop over to top up on garden history and my passion for walled gardens, it’s such a shame I rarely get the time though.

The gardeners at Calke Abbey manage a huge walled garden, physic garden, orangery orchards and more, all full of colour and edible abundance. I admire their neat rows of vegetables and wigwams of fragrant sweet peas.

her gardener maintain some beautiful herbaceous borders, the oriental garden, rose gardens and orchards along with acres of specimen trees and woodland.

There are plant sales too.

Coton Manor Gardens take a while longer to journey too, but a gentle drive through the rolling Northamptonshire countryside is no hardship. The garden is owned by the Pasley-Tyler family who have developed a beautiful garden divided into areas of formal borders, ponds, kitchen garden, woodland and meadow.

They even have Flamingos wondering around on the lower lawns! The plant nursery sells plants grown onsite and they have some lovely unusual plants to tempt the enthusiast.

Further Afield

Trentham Gardens near Stoke on Trent has lots to look at if you are a keen gardener, fun for the kids and some lovely walks too. There is a huge garden centre nearby which is worth visiting too. Well known garden designers have developed the Italianate gardens, grass borders and there is a new woodland garden being planted up this year.

I’m a great fan of Piet Oudolf the dutch garden designer and plantsman who favours ornamental grasses and long flowering perennials and he has had a huge influence on the planting at Pensthorpe. The ‘new wave’ plantings are spectacular throughout summer and into the autumn showing how the right combination of colour, texture and form can create a long lasting and dynamic garden.

Helmsley Walled Garden in North Yorkshire was a truly wonderful discovery last summer and my current favorite. The old walled garden adjacent to Helmsley Castle has been renovated to provide acres of perennial and rose borders, wildflower meadow, productive fruit , vegetable and cut flower areas. The stunning double borders backed with purple beech took my breath away with their bold colour combinations.

I do hope you get a chance to visit some of these gardens this year for some inspiration. Next month I’ll be suggesting some tasty ways to make use of the fruit, veg and herbs abundant in the garden at this time of year.

Labour Aspirations For Coalville Town Centre

As Labour's Shadow Lead on NWLDC's Coalville Project I am disappointed to hear that Coalville is to lose Dunelm Mill, a business that was born and bred in our town. A reliable source has told me to expect Burton and Dorothy Perkins to abandon the precinct in September.

NEEDLES BEING DUMPED ON FOOTPATH Cllr Michael Wyatt has expressed his growing concern over the number of needles being dumped in a footpath on the High Street in Coalville.

The closure of Snibston has had a negative impact on our town.

The loss of the Museum and the mini-railway are making it more difficult for town traders to attract visitors to special events in our retail centre.

Cllr Wyatt said, "on several occasions now I have seen and reported needles being carelessly disposed off. This careless act is not only irresponsible but extremely dangerous and stupid. My biggest fear is that someone or some child will accidentally fall and become infected or seriously hurt."

To add to this catalogue of woe, Leicestershire County Council Members have been told, despite the evidence, not to pursue the economic benefits of the National Forest Line.

How can Coalville people turn this situation around? We must look for the positives and grasp the opportunities available.

This is now the time to press for Dunelm Mill to be returned to cinema. A recent feasibility study showed it can be done. Heritage Lottery Business grants will support this kind of development.

Shopping habits have changed.

People are buying more online.

The 21st Century Town Centre is now a cultural space not a retail space. We have a thriving cafe culture including community radio station and coffee lounge, HermitageFM. The precinct may be dying, but new small independent business are occupying all the little shops

High Street Summerfest Success Michael Wyatt and Ryan Flamson, two local businessman who have shops on the High street teamed up to bring a little extra to Coalville on Saturday.

Michael Wyatt owner of the Bitter and Twisted Micro Pub said, "We wanted to help the struggling businesses along the high street.

Saturday showed that with a little team work we can bring people back into Coalville. Many of the small independent businesses along the High Street had a success day, and hopeful the next event will be just as successful for everyone."

Ryan Flamson owner of One Stop Shop said, "It was a great days event. Hopeful this will be one of

many. We achieve this by coming together and asking friends for favours which they did, so thank you to everyone who supported us."

on the High Street and Belvoir Road. Springboard, now 30 years old, continues to launch start-up businesses in the town centre. The entrepreneurial Arthur Holland is reestablishing the Emporium at the centre of Coalville's night-time economy.

Other improvements in the pipeline suggest that people outside the town have confidence in Coalville as a place to do business. The Halfway House on Belvoir Road is to be converted into bed and breakfast encouraging people to visit the National Forest. The former bus garage on Ashby Road has been bought with a view to providing a prestige show room for desirable car sales.

The role of the District Council is to enable business to flourish.

At the NWLDC Annual Budget meeting the Labour Group proposed that car parking in Coalville and Ashby should be free after 3pm in the afternoon.

The "Coalville Project" cannot be allowed to become another pointless consultation. Coalville's Labour Councillors are not giving up on Coalville town centre. We will continue to press for practical steps that enable local businesses to flourish in a changing economic climate.

The “inverse care law” is the principle that the availability of good medical or social care tends to vary inversely with the need of the population served.

Proposed by a GP, Julian Tudor Hart in 1971, it is a pun on the “inverse-square law” a concept from physics.

This is hardly a new idea. It was published by another doctor, St Luke, 2000 years ago. In a conversation with Zacheus the taxman, Jesus concludes a story with the pithy comment, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.’

The Inverse Care Law is alive and well here in North West Leicestershire. According to statistics released by Rail Minister Claire Perry on June 8th, the East Midlands received the lowest railway investment per head in 2014-15.

With rail investment of £34 per head of population the East Midlands received less than a tenth of the funding given to London (£353) and a third of that invested in Yorkshire and Humber (£98) and the North West ( £93).

Even the East of England did better (£71) leaving the East Midlands languishing at the bottom of the table even lower than South West (£35).

This is not due to a lack of need.

In 2013 the RAC Foundation reported in ‘The Car and the Commute’ that, outside London, 60-70% of workers need a car to get to work. With severe pockets of income deprivation, scarce bus and rail services and slow journeys even where public transport is available, both North West Leicestershire and South Derbyshire are in the top ten English and Welsh local authorities for car dependency with 80% of working adults having to travel to work by car/van.

With air pollution causing 40,000 deaths a year and fossil fuels driving global climate change, surely something must be done?

Continuing To Lobby After receiving a report from consultants AECOM, Leicestershire’s cross-party Environment & Transport Scrutiny Committee recommended to Cabinet that Leicestershire County Council “should continue to lobby nationally and regionally for the upgrade of the Leicester to Burton Line”.

Should we be surprised then that, despite this advice, the Conservative Cabinet decided on the 17th June that “the County Council will undertake no further investigatory work on the proposal at this time.”

Leicestershire’s determination to quash the heightened “interest amongst the general public, local elected representatives and many other stakeholders about the proposal of reopening the Leicester to Burton Line to passenger traffic” is in direct contrast to our neighbours Lincolnshire County Council.

Expressing disappointment at the low level of rail investment in the East Midlands, Lincolnshire have spotted an opportunity.

The East Midlands rail franchise will be re-let by the Department of Transport soon. Lincolnshire will be using that opportunity to lobby for better rail services for their County. According to Andrew Roden (Rail Magazine) their shopping list includes “a bridge over the East Coast Main Line near Newark to allow more services to run on the Lincoln to Nottingham line.”

It appears that North West Leicestershire doesn’t just lack investment in rail infrastructure.

It also lacks a ruling elite with the political will to go out and fight for it.

On the 23rd June, the people of the UK took an historic decision when they backed the UK to leave the European Union. I acted as the lead MP for Vote Leave in the East Midlands and in our region almost 3 in 5 people voted for leave.

The referendum debate engaged the whole nation in a great democratic process. The campaign was the fiercest I have ever taken part in, which is understandable because it was the most important issue I have ever campaigned on or which the country has ever faced. This vote was about who ultimately governs our country and because of the result ,in future it will be the people of our Country, who have taken back control and who can hold politicians , political parties and their Government to account at the ballot box. If their elected representatives have not performed, they can vote them out and elect someone else, something we could never do with the unelected and unaccountable EU bureaucracy.

What I found most encouraging during this process was the level of voter engagement, which resulted in a very high turnout, and that people who have never voted in their lives, people in their 50s and 60s who had previously never voted came out to vote. I do hope that this is the start of a re engagement with politics , as in the future we will now have more powers to make our own laws , regaining sovereignty so people in the UK will have more reason to turn out to vote.

I am very proud that Britain has given most of the world Parliamentary democracy and it’s right that we should have the confidence to regain our own democracy.

There are obviously concerns about what happens next.

Nothing will change quickly, the process of extracting ourselves from the bureaucracy of the EU will take at least two years.

The fact that we voted to Leave just might shake the EU to reform

itself for the better, but I honestly doubt it will. We might be the First Nation state to leave the EU, but judging by the Eurosceptic sentiment in other EU Countries, I doubt we will be the last.

What we must not lose sight of is the fact that we are still the 5th largest economy in the world and the 4th largest spender on defence. Our language is the language of business. We will be good friends to our allies in Europe and around the world. We will have a chance to forge even stronger ties with our historic friends in the English speaking world and the Commonwealth.

For our young people who may or may not have voted or even been old enough to vote we need to give them confidence and reassurance about their future, They will still be able to travel around Europe and the world, at home they will have a chance of a better education, better job prospects and conditions, improved opportunities to own their own home and an accountable democratically elected Government to make their laws.

Sovereignty belongs to the people, not politicians which is why I campaigned and voted for a Referendum, I am obviously pleased that the nation decided to reclaim its sovereignty.

We must now look to a future in which we will have the flexibility to develop relationships all over the world together with a fairer skills and points based immigration policy. A One Nation Conservative Party will unite behind our manifesto commitments which will improve life chances ,social mobility and move forward into a new era of optimism and confidence.

What the Referendum has demonstrated to our country and the world is that it is not the faceless EU bureaucrats, the multinational banks, large corporations, Prime Minister or MPs who govern our nation, it is the British people and I salute you!
