Dubbed 'the Oscars of the music education world', these prestigious awards will be presented at a gala dinner and ceremony in London on 25th February 2016.

There are 13 categories of award altogether; Music Maestros features in the Best Musical Initiative category and will be judged against other exciting and inspiring initiatives from all over the UK. The Castle Rock Music Maestros scheme was launched in September 2014 and gives students and parents the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument, providing free tuition, loan instruments and transport home afterwards. Students at Castle Rock High School entered a national competition in order to have the chance to star in an educational show to help schools learn about the science and engineering behind the mining industry and its history.

Castle Rock High School student, Maddie Simpson, was successful in her performing arts audition to be the leading actress in the ‘Dangerous Science of Mining’ show and other students: Natalie Commons, Emily Commons, Chloe Dicken and Paulina Kolodziej were also successful in being involved in the technical side of this production whilst also starring in some of the scenes. Castle Rock

High School had the opportunity to work with ‘Leicestershire Education Business Company’ and the ‘Museum Learning Team’ at Leicestershire County Council to develop this education show.

This exciting project meant that Castle Rock High School students performed part of a script acting as Victorian miners which demonstrates the real dangers faced by Victorian miners and also explains how science and engineering developments have made mining safer today. Some Primary school students from Coalville and Whitwick came to Castle Rock High School to see a pilot show; throughout the education show, students learned

about coal and how demand for this commodity during the industrial revolution affected those working in the industry. The science behind the dangers was explained and demonstrated through interactive experiments and each section of the show was linked by a video clips of Castle Rock student Maddie playing the part of Charlie, a young Victorian miner.

Castle Rock High School, the ‘Leicestershire Education Business Company’ and the ‘Museum Learning Team’ look forward to sharing this educational resource with primary schools across the East Midlands next year.

Local Schools Help Ibstock Brick To Plant The Future

Late Football Legend’s Family Feud Is A Lesson For Public, Says Legal Expert A major family fallout over the care of footballer Jimmy Hill is a lesson that needs publicising to prevent many families facing the same problems, warns leading law firm QualitySolicitors Mander Cruickshank.

Legal expert, Frankie Harwood said the dispute showed how many people who have remarried failed to make sure the best legal provisions are in place to help with possible care issues in later life.

The former Match of the Day presenter, who died in December aged 87, suffered from dementia, and spent his last years in a nursing home as he was too ill to be looked after at home.

His plight caused problems for his family, including his third wife Bryony, as well as his five children from two previous marriages.

Hill was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2008, but two years ago two of his children Jamie and Joanna spoke of their father’s illness to highlight the issues that arise when a parent – with a large extended family – becomes too ill to make their own decisions.

“Jimmy Hill gave joint powers of attorney to his current wife and their solicitor in 2005, when he was still in good health and it is believed that Hill stated at that time that he did not wish any of his children to be the second attorney,” said Ms Harwood “Unfortunately, as a result, none of his children had any say in his future affairs or his treatment.”

The children only discovered the legal document’s existence when Hill was assessed to be too ill to look after himself. It was only then that the law required that his children be informed that powers of attorney had been granted to Mrs Hill and the couple's solicitor.

Mr Hill’s children have urged elderly parents to talk to their children so that they are included in discussions about who has powers of attorney.

“It is sad that in his last days his children had no say over his treatment and care,” added Ms Harwood.

“Children whose parents don’t have straightforward family situations should be made aware that they may be unable to influence their affairs without a power of attorney,” she added and warned they need to have this conversation with parents, before deterioration sets in, about whom they want to be in charge of their lives and care.

“The sad case of Jimmy Hill affects many, and these issues will become a more common problem over the years because there are so many families in a similar situation,” she added.

Schoolchildren from three schools in Ibstock teamed up with the UK’s largest brick maker, Ibstock Brick, to help plant 900 trees in the grounds of its Leicester Road factory, as part of its work to increase brick output with a new and additional state-of-the-art brick factory.

The project was the first planting phase of the 7000 trees planned for this spring, which will form part of the overall landscape screening around the site. More than 15,000 new trees will be planted upon completion of Ibstock’s new factory, which will be capable of producing an additional 100 million bricks per year – enough to build around 15,000 new homes.

After planning permission was granted for the development, which will create 50 full-time new jobs in the local area, Ibstock began its work to create new natural habitats to support local ecosystems and enhance the surrounding landscape.

Children and young people from St Denys Church of England Infants, Ibstock Junior School and Ibstock Community College were invited to take part. More than 280 pupils helped to plant a variety of trees over two days on 12th and 13th January.

to the planting days to explain more about the development and show the pupils how their efforts will help to create forested areas linking into the existing woodland plantations around the site.

We hope the students will remember their experience and be proud of their achievement as the woodland they have planted grows around them. David Phillips, principal at Ibstock Community College, said “We were delighted that students from the college were able to have an active role in creating this new woodland. It gives them a stake in this important community venture and reminds them that we all need to think about issues such as the environment and sustainability.”

Ibstock anticipates the new factory will be ready to start production during 2017.

Record Breaking Year As Litter Picking ‘Guardians Of The Green’ Fill More Than 2,000 Bags The community group Friends of Thringstone has reported a record year for litter picking as they collected a staggering 2,053 bags in 2015.

This Keep Britain Tidy awardwinning group has had enough of people plaguing its village with litter and, for the past few of years, has been doing something about it.

Alongside two community litter picks last year around the village of Thringstone in North West Leicestershire many individuals have stepped up to do their part.

The village has a host of volunteers who take on the duty of keeping their village free from the litter louts’ mess. One resident litter picks the streets of the village every day while two other dedicated residents tackle the litter in the woods twice a week.

As well as the usual bottles, cans and paper, the group has been known to collect stranger items, including car parts, underwear and hoover parts. These ‘guardians of the green’ recycle everything they can and work closely with North West Leicestershire District Council to help combat fly-tipping in their area.

Nita Pearson, Chairman of Friends of Thringstone and a litter picker herself, said “People think it's just kids that drop litter, and that there should be more education on the matter at school, but that isn't the case at all. All ages drop litter, including adults, who tend to drop cigarette butts, food packets, beer cans and that sort of thing, as well as bags of dog poo that they can't be bothered to put in a bin. It is also adults who are responsible, in the main, for fly tipping. We want our village to look nice for everybody, and that is why we continue to litter pick.”

Award Winning Heritage Trust Seeks Secretary Swannington Heritage Trust has won many awards for restoring Hough Mill and its 10 acres of former coal mining and railway sites. The Trust opens the mill 50 times a year to the 1,500 members of the public and community groups who are excited by its transformation from a derelict shell to thriving heritage centre. Some 13,000 walkers enjoy the former industrial sites that are now managed as woodland and grass heathland.

The Trust has a thriving group of volunteers that carry out the building maintenance and land management activities (although a couple more would always be advantageous). However a review of Trust activities has highlighted that we are particularly short of administrative support; people who realise that the effective use of a laptop, software and ring

binder can be as valuable as a skilled craftsman.

Our prime recruitment target is for a Secretary to issue the agendas for our bi-monthly Management Committee meetings, write the minutes, file key documents to ensure that they are available for use and generally assist with the administration of the Trust.

The role would suit someone with good administrative and IT skills who works well with others; perhaps someone who uses these skills for a living or who has retired.

Retirement Of Brain Vollar As Chairmen Of The Friends Of Snibston Since 2013 Brian Vollar has been the Chairman of the Friends of Snibston. During those 3 years he demonstrated his skill at leadership of the Friends of Snibston and the campaign to save Snibston Museum.

The campaign has been very onerous and difficult but Brian has lead it with decorum, skill and a clarity of vision and achievement. Sadly the campaign was not successful, which was not a reflection of his ability or dedication, but rather the intransigence and predetermination of the County Council.

Draft Tory Budget Will Hurt Our Town Says Wyatt The draft budget for Leicestershire County Council was released today. There will be a Council Tax increase of 4%, the highest Council Tax rise in 8 years. There will also be severe cuts to Council services.

Over the next three years, the Government Grant is expected to reduce down to zero and the Council will need to rely entirely on Council Tax and Business rates to fund local services.

Liberal Democrat County Councillor Michael Wyatt said “The Coalition government took a careful and balanced approach to balancing the budget. Now

there’s no one to hold the Tories back, they’ve cut an extra £6m and Leicestershire Residents are paying the price, and they have gone back on their word for a smaller museum in the Snibston site. Clearly this is a political decision. One area I really do think they are failing to look at for savings is the top management, for example the chief executive which is paid more than the prime minister last time I checked.”

By Tories Chair and Vice-Chair (Nick Rushton & Peter Soulsby) announced a new set of proposals for Leicestershire & Rutland Fire & Rescue Service. The previous drastic and unnecessary proposed cuts have been thrown into the bin following a public outcry and a concerted campaign by the public, firefighters and the Liberal Democrats.

Nick Rushton stated only days ago that the new proposals have nothing to do with the ‘Liberals’ although their efforts, alongside the unions, campaigning against the original proposals are widely credited with killing them off.

These new proposals are a consequence of these actions.

However, despite improvements for a number of areas, the plans for Coalville remain the same. The intention is to replace Coalville’s second engine with a TRV.

Local Lib Dem Councillor Michael Wyatt said “I’m pleased my work, and that of my Liberal Democrat colleagues, have helped prevent some of the worst cuts that were planned for our Fire Service. I am extremely disappointed that there are no improvements for Coalville though. Coalville is a growing town and we can’t afford to skimp on the level of Fire Services here!”

The Liberal Democrats have also called for Nick Rushton to step down as chair of the CFA, accusing him of rushing through decisions and not properly listening to objections.

Cllr Michael Wyatt said “Leicester and Leicestershire were very close to having their Fire Service cut to dangerous levels. Lives would have been put at risk. Since last May CFA has not been operating as it should. I really think Soulsby and Rushton have overstretched themselves trying to run a Council and a Fire Authority. They should step down from the CFA in favour of someone able to focus more on the Fire Services.”

Coalville’s Heritage: A new campaign

OXFAM tell us that, globally, inequality is reaching new extremes. The richest 1% now have more wealth than the rest of the world combined. Power and privilege is being used to skew the economic system to increase the gap between the richest and the rest.

Snibston Discovery Museum’s main Gallery is, as I write, soon to be demolished and along with it the false hope of a ‘smaller mining museum’.

When doorstepped by charitably minded souls who were concerned that less well-off people might die without the benefit of public relief, investment banker Scrooge retorted, ‘they had better do it and decrease the surplus population’.

Dicken’s Christmas fairytale, written in 1843, has been credited with pressuring the British establishment to pass the first Public Health Act in 1848. A less romantic pressure was the realisation that the rich could not protect themselves from the spread of diseases of poverty, such as cholera, without sharing some of life’s advantages with those at the bottom of society.

Oblivious to our own dependency on public services, such as environmental health, waste recycling and highway repairs, there are few campaigning on the streets at the news that Local Government faces a further 24% cut to its already decimated budgets.

Public Health is no longer part of the NHS and now sits within the County Council. Its budget, previously ring-fenced, is no longer immune. With cuts of £3m this year and further cuts to come, an urgent review of preventive healthcare is already underway.

Early intervention, sexual health clinics, drug and alcohol services, obesity management and smoking cessation are all to be trimmed.

You may not use or value any of the services under threat. You may even accept inequality as inevitable. Some people do. You may not be convinced, as I am, that prevention is better than cure.

However you choose to reassure yourself, history tells us that only a tiny minority can afford to insulate themselves from the dis-ease of an unequal society.

After turning down £4.2M of Heritage Lottery funding, dismissing the Friend of Snibston’s expert-led business case in favour of a one-page fantasy, airbrushing Snibston from County Council volunteer events and performance reports, it is a small relief to see the ruling Tory Group finally admit that they are, as predicted, moth-balling the Scheduled Ancient Monument. This will cost you, the council tax payer, £320k a year, every year, in perpetuity with no sustained plan to fund the inevitable repairs needed in the longer term.

Further cuts to the Communities and Wellbeing department, responsible for Museums and Libraries, means that, rather than doing things ‘to’ and ‘for’ residents the County Council is hoping to work ‘with’ them. We are told that future services will be co-designed and co-developed with communities and other stakeholders.

I sincerely hope that Arts and Heritage Societies in Coalville will see this promise as a challenge. Coalville is a living breathing Victorian artefact whose very streets and buildings tell the history of Victorian entrepreneurship and Protestant philanthropy. Major funding bodies such as Arts Council England, the European Social Fund and Heritage Lottery are ready and willing to work with cohesive communities like ours.

The embarrassing state of Snibston’s Ancient Monument will not encourage major funders to hand their largesse direct to Councillors seen as responsible for its decline. If Coalville’s heritage is to attract visitors to our town we, the people, will need show the way and take the lead.

It has been a busy start to the year in Parliament as I and my colleagues continue our campaign for a fairer funding settlement for Leicestershire.

For many years we have been one of the lowest funded local authorities in the Country. Due to this our local services have had to be run in an extremely efficient way, and whilst I believe there has to be spending restraint within local government as we try to balance the nations book, it is my and my Leicestershire colleagues argument that we have less fat to cut because of our historically low funding settlements, and there are fewer efficiencies available to our county than might be available to other local authorities. It is a fact that urban authorities receive an extra 45% in funding compared to rural ones such as North West Leicestershire and I and my Parliamentary colleagues have put these points in the strongest possible manner to the Government, and I am hopeful that the Secretary of State has listened to our argument and taken our points on board.

I was very pleased the visit and endorse. However, we cannot afford to be complacent as we are part of a global economy and there is concerning economic news from China, Russia and Brazil, which is why it is so important that we stick to our long term economic plan to balance the nation’s books and rebalance the UK economy.

One area we are certainly not falling behind in is our employment statistics. Last month claimant count unemployment dropped below 500 and stands at just 1% compared to a national rate of 2.4%. We are continuing to enjoy a period of rapid economic growth in the District with companies keen to invest in the area and its workforce and this in itself is a terrific vote of confidence in the people of North West Leicestershire. Indeed I was able to raise the point in Prime Minister’s questions recently citing the 350 job opportunities that were available at a jobs fair at East Midlands Airport which

I particularly think this is important given the fact the Leicestershire County Council have stated they cannot provide a mining museum in Coalville. It is a decision that has greatly disappointed me especially as one of my grandfathers was a coal miner and I am anxious that as many items of local historic significance and be retained in the town and district. I will be meeting the leader of the County Council to discuss some ideas around how to do this and see what options there are for future generations to appreciate the industries that our area was built upon.

Whilst our main economic sector in the district is distribution, we also have a growing leisure sector and I had a very positive meeting with DEFRA Minister Rory Stewart a couple of weeks ago about extending the Ashby Canal into Measham to link up the proposed Measham Wharf development with the national network. You only have to look at the success of the waterside developments further down the canal in Bosworth to appreciate the positive economic impact this could have on Measham and surrounding villages, and I will now be working with Leicestershire County Council and the Canal and River Trust to see if we can make this vision a reality.
